Functionalized polybutadiene diol based hydrophobic, water dispersible polyurethane nanocomposites: Role of organo-clay structure

Exploring the synergistic effect of carboxymethyl cellulose and chitosan in enhancing thermal stability of polyurethanes through statistical mixture design approach

The thermal stability of polyurethanes, known for its limitations, was addressed in this research by seeking improvement through the introduction of carbohydrate-based chain extenders. In this research paper, we systematically sought to improve the thermal resistance of polyurethanes by incorporating carboxymethyl cellulose and chitosan, representing a pioneering application of the mixture design approach in their preparation. In this synthesis, hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) were reacted to prepare -NCO terminated prepolymer, which was subsequently reacted with varying mole ratios of CMC and CSN to develop a series of five PU samples. The prepared PU samples were characterized using the Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopic technique. Thermal pyrolysis of PU samples was examined using thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). It was observed that, among all the samples, PUS-3 showed remarkable thermal stability over a wide temperature range. A comprehensive statistical analysis was conducted to substantiate the experimental findings. It was estimated that CMC and CSN significantly enhance the thermal stability of the samples when involved in an interaction fashion. The ANOVA Table for the mixture design demonstrates that over 90 % of the total variation in thermal stability is explained by the mixture model across a wide temperature range. Moreover, PSU-3 exhibited 4 % more thermal stability over a wide range of temperatures on average, as compared to contemporary samples.

Environmental risk of microplastics in a Mexican coastal lagoon ecosystem: Anthropogenic inputs and its possible human food risk

Coastal lagoons are ecosystems that are considered providers of a variety species of commercial value to the humans. However, they are currently threatened by a variety of anthropogenic-derived impacts, including environmental pollution by microplastics (MPs). For these reasons, it is necessary to identify suitable biomonitors for monitoring MP activities in aquatic environments and for estimating human ingestion of MPs from the consumption of commercial shellfish species. Therefore, our aims were to identify the anthropogenic activities that supply MPs into a coastal lagoon in the southern Gulf of Mexico and their variety; to determine whether oysters (Crassostrea virginica) are suitable biomonitors to perform MPs monitoring activities and to conduct an estimation of how many MPs could a human consume by the ingestion of a commercial portion of oysters harvested in this coastal lagoon. Our results noted that MP concentrations from water and sediment collected in Laguna de Terminos were 210,000 and 11.3 times higher than values reported in other protected areas worldwide. MPs chemical composition revealed that fishing and urban activities supply mainly polyethylene (21.1 %), poly (butadiene) diol (12.6 %) and polyethylene terephthalate (9.5 %). It was also determined that oysters did not reflect the spatial distribution of MPs within the study area and that a human could consume up to 806.1 MPs per 237.1 g serving of an oyster cocktail. Finally, a coastal lagoon polluted with MPs increases the risk of affecting species used for human consumption.

Synthesis and characterization of hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene modified low temperature adaptive self-matting waterborne polyurethane

Hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) is a flexible telechelic compound with a main chain containing a slightly cross-linked activated carbon-carbon double bond and a hydroxyl group at the end. Therefore, in this paper, HTPB was used as a terminal diol prepolymer, and sulfonate AAS and carboxylic acid DMPA were used as hydrophilic chain extenders to prepare low-temperature adaptive self-matting waterborne polyurethane (WPU). Due to the fact that the non-polar butene chain in the HTPB prepolymer cannot form a hydrogen bond with the urethane group, and the solubility parameter difference between the hard segment formed by the urethane group is large, the gap of T g between the soft and hard segments of the WPU increases by nearly 10 °C, with more obvious microphase separation. At the same time, by adjusting the HTPB content, WPU emulsions with different particle sizes can be obtained, thereby obtaining WPU emulsions with good extinction properties and mechanical properties. The results show that HTPB-based WPU with a certain degree of microphase separation and roughness obtained by introducing a large number of non-polar carbon chains has good extinction ability, and the 60° glossiness can be as low as 0.4 GU. Meanwhile, the introduction of HTPB can improve the mechanical properties and low temperature flexibility of WPU. The T g,s (the glass transition temperature of soft segment) of WPU modified by the HTPB block decreased by 5.82 °C, and the ΔT g increased by 21.04 °C, indicating that the degree of microphase separation increased. At -50 °C, the elongation at break and tensile strength of WPU modified by HTPB can still maintain 785.2% and 76.7 MPa, which are 1.82 times and 2.91 times those of WPU with only PTMG as soft segment, respectively. The self-matting WPU coating prepared in this paper can meet the requirements of severe cold weather and has potential application prospects in the field of finishing.

Improvement in Migration Resistance of Hydroxyl-Terminated Polybutadiene (HTPB) Liners by Using Graphene Barriers

The excessive migration of plasticizers leads to debonding and cracking of a liner, which can compromise the safety of a solid propellant. Graphene oxide (GO), with a laminar structure as a filler, can effectively reduce the migration of plasticizers. In this study, we modified GO using toluene diisocyanate (TDI). The cross-link density of the substrate was increased by grafting isocyanate groups to obtain a denser liner for the purpose of preventing plasticizer migration. We also used octadecylamine (ODA) to modify GO by grafting negatively charged amide groups on the GO surface. The electrostatic repulsive effect of the amide group on the plasticizer molecules was used to prevent plasticizer migration. Two modified GOs were filled into the hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene to prepare two composite liners. We then investigated the migration resistance and migration kinetics of each modified liner using the dipping method. In addition, we explored the mechanical properties of each modified liner. Compared with the original liner, the anti-migration and mechanical properties of the modified composite liners were significantly improved. Among them, the TDI-modified liner had the most obvious improvement in migration resistance, while the ODA-modified liner had the greatest improvement in bonding properties. All types of liners met the requirements of the current propellant systems. This study provides an effective reference for improving the migration resistance and bonding properties of the composite liner.

Comparative Study on Thermal Response Mechanism of Two Binders during Slow Cook-Off

The HTPE (hydroxyl-terminated polyether) propellant had a lower ignition temperature (150 °C vs. 240 °C) than the HTPB (hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene) propellant in the slow cook-off test. The reactions of the two propellants were combustion and explosion, respectively. A series of experiments including the changes of colors and the intensity of infrared characteristic peaks were designed to characterize the differences in the thermal response mechanisms of the HTPB and HTPE binder systems. As a solid phase filler to accidental ignition, the weight loss and microscopic morphology of AP (30~230 °C) were observed by TG and SEM. The defects of the propellant caused by the cook-off were quantitatively analyzed by the box counting method. Above 120 °C, the HTPE propellant began to melt and disperse in the holes, filling the cracks, which generated during the decomposition of AP at a low temperature. Melting products were called the “high-temperature self-repair body”. A series of analyses proved that the different thermal responses of the two binders were the main cause of the slow cook-off results, which were likewise verified in the propellant mechanical properties and gel fraction test. From the microscopic point of view, the mechanism of HTPE’s slow cook-off performance superior to HTPB was revealed in this article.

Percolation Network Formation in Nylon 6/Montmorillonite Nanocomposites: A Critical Structural Insight and the Impact on Solidification Process and Mechanical Behavior

The incorporation of montmorillonite (MMT) into Nylon 6 can endow advantages like improved mechanical strength and thermal stability, making Nylon 6/MMT a possible ideal alternative for Nylon 66. However, the relationship between the microstructure and physical properties of nylon 6/MMT nanocomposites is unclear so far due to the complicated system, including the highly asymmetric geometry of the exfoliated MMT layer and the complicated interaction between MMT layers and entangled nylon 6 chains. Herein, we focus on two processes, namely the impact of MMT on the solidification procedure during molding and the toughness–brittleness transition during the tensile stretch, in order to elucidate the structure–property relationship of nylon 6/MMT composites. We firstly studied the solidification process of nylon 6/MMT with bending height experiments. The results showed that the solidification process occurs prior to the crystallization of nylon 6, indicating that a physical crosslinked network rather than a crystalline structure is the reason for the solidification process. Furthermore, the solidification speed has a step change at around 2 wt% MMT content, indicating that the MMT percolation network is related to the transition. We further studied the influence of MMT inclusion on the mechanical properties, and found the tensile strain at break showed a similar step change at around 2 wt% MMT content, which further confirms the existence of an MMT percolation network above 2 wt% MMT content. It was generally believed that the main effect of MMT on nylon 6 is the nanofiller enforcement; we found that the percolation effect of the highly asymmetric 2-D nanofiller plays a central role in influencing the mechanical properties and solidification behavior during molding.

Functionalized GO/Hydroxy-Terminated Polybutadiene Composites with High Anti-Migration and Ablation Resistance Performance

The migration of plasticizers such as nitroglycerin seriously affects the storage and working safety of rocket systems. In this work, hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) liner composites with the cross-linked structure were prepared by cross-linking isocyanate functionalized graphene oxide (IGO) with HTPB to prevent the migration of high energy plasticizers in the propellant. IGO was uniformly dispersed in the matrix as reinforcement and cross-linker, providing good migration resistance and ablation resistance for the liner composites. Compared with pure HTPB, the migration resistance of the liner with 0.5 wt% IGO increased by 18.94%, 16.33% and 15.34% at 25 °C, 60 °C and 90 °C, respectively. In addition, the ablation resistance of the HTPB liner was improved by the addition of IGO. The improved anti-migration properties come from the special laminar structure of IGO and the dense molecular chains network of the cross-linked composites.

Synthesis and Application of a Low Dye Absorption Waterborne Polyurethane for Microfiber Synthetic Leather

As increasing attention is being paid to harmful residual dye pollution in the dyeing effluent from the microfiber synthetic leather industry, there is an urgent need to explore innovative ways to alleviate such pollution. Here, a low-polarity waterborne polyurethane (WPU) was synthesized using hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) and polypropylene glycol (N220) as soft segments to react with –NCO on isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI). The structure and properties of modified waterborne polyurethane were characterized by Fourier Transform Interferometric Radiometer (FTIR), and emulsion characterization was performed, including particle size and zeta potential analysis, tensile test, thermal properties test, and contact angle test. The SEM and alkali reduction rate results showed that increasing the HTPB content decreases the alkali reduction rate by blocking the penetration of corrosive ions by the double bond cross-link structure, but higher HTPB addition (>40%) leads to an enhancement in phase separation, which contributes to an increase in the alkali reduction rate. The results of the UV spectrum analysis showed that when the amount of HTPB added was 50%, the coloration rate reached 81.27% compared with 13.18%, which was 68.09% higher than that of the unmodified microfiber leather. The binding of the dry and wet rubbing color of the modified microfiber leather with the addition of 50% HTPB reached grades of 4–5 and 3–4, respectively, which meets most application requirements without subsequent washing.

Clay-Based Polymer Nanocomposites: Essential Work of Fracture

This work details the general structure of the clays used as a reinforcement phase in polymer nanocomposites. Clays are formed by the molecular arrangement of atomic planes described through diagrams to improve their visualization. The molecular knowledge of clays can facilitate the selection of the polymer matrix and achieve a suitable process to obtain clay-based polymer nanocomposite systems. This work highlights the development of polymer nanocomposites using the melt intercalation method. The essential work of fracture (EWF) technique has been used to characterize the fracture behavior of materials that show ductility and where complete yielding of the ligament region occurs before the crack propagation. In this sense, the EWF technique characterizes the post-yielding fracture mechanics, determining two parameters: the specific essential work of fracture (we), related to the surface where the actual fracture process occurs, and the specific non-essential work of fracture (wp), related to the plastic work carried out in the outer zone of the fracture zone. The EWF technique has been used successfully in nano-reinforced polymers to study the influence of different variables on fracture behavior. In this work, the fundamentals of the EWF technique are described, and some examples of its application are compiled, presenting a summary of the most relevant contributions in recent years.

Synthesis and characterization of hydroxyethyl cellulose copolymer modified polyurethane bionanocomposites

Bio based polyurethane nanocomposites (renewable thermosets) show a diverse range in properties, processing components and production of smart materials for health, food, and energy sectors. In this work, polyurethane nanocomposites based on isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), and hydroxyl terminated-polybutadiene (HTPB) incorporating clay were modified using hydroxyethyl cellulose (HLAC) to be further assessed for thermal and mechanical properties. Elastomers samples were prepared by blending clay suspension and PU prepolymer to attain clay contents of 0.3, 0.5, and 1% (weight on dry basis) along with butane diol and HLAC chain extenders. Effect of nanofiller aggregation and dispersion on the thermal degradation and surface morphology of the bionanocomposites were studied. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray (SEM/EDX) and thermal gravimetric (TG) techniques were used to investigate the interactions among PU matrix, clay nanofillers, and HLAC. Mechanical testing indicated an increase in tensile strength and a decrease in elongation at break (%) by just adding 0.3 wt% clay. The thermal stability of the bionanocomposites was improved with the addition of clay. The results of the thermal and mechanical studies demonstrated the feasibility of the bionanocomposites as strong and thermally stable elastomers with low filler loading.

Rapid and high-concentration exfoliation of montmorillonite into high-quality and mono-layered nanosheets

After montmorillonite (MTM) was first exfoliated into nanosheets as a reinforcing filler in the 1980s, layered clay became a hotspot of interest. However, to date, the exfoliation of the resource-rich and inexpensive layered MTM into high-quality nanosheets still remains a significant challenge. Herein, a simple and effective strategy to exfoliate layered MTM into mono-layered sheets via the aggregation of polyethyl-phosphate glycol ester (Exolit OP 550) is proposed. A significant decrease in exfoliation time from 120 min to 3 min was observed at room temperature only via a gentle stirring process. Moreover, various factors that reduce the viscosity of the mixture could be utilized to boost the exfoliated concentration to a record high value of 100 wt%, which is an increase of 460-2400% compared with that in other works. A tentative model was also proposed to illustrate the exfoliation mechanism based on the detection of segmental confined movement, structural evolution, and polymer-clay interaction. Particularly, the as-observed critical concentration of 200 wt% MTM indicated a saturation effect for the surface-adsorbed polymer. The critical concentration for the onset of exfoliation was 150 wt%. In addition, the structure of the exfoliated nanosheets in Exolit OP 550 underwent a temperature-sensitive and irreversible transformation. Thus, our study may provide new insight for the exfoliation of clay.

Waterproof, Highly Tough, and Fast Self-Healing Polyurethane for Durable Electronic Skin

A stretchable electronic skin (e-skin) requires a durable elastomeric matrix to serve in various conditions. Therefore, excellent and balanced properties such as elasticity, water proof capability, toughness, and self-healing are demanded. However, it is very difficult and often contradictory to optimize them at one time. Here, a polyurethane (BS-PU-3) containing a polydisperse hard segment, hydrophobic soft segment, and a dynamic disulfide bond was prepared by one-pot synthesis. Unlike the normal two-pot reaction, BS-PU-3 obtained through the one-pot method owned a higher density of self-healing points along the main chain and a faster self-healing speed, which reached 1.11 μm/min in a cut-through sample and recovered more than 93% of virgin mechanical properties in 6 h at room temperature. Moreover, a remarkable toughness of 27.5 MJ/m³ assures its durability as an e-skin matrix. Even with a 1 mm notch (half of the total width) on a standard dumbbell specimen, it could still bear the tensile strain up to 324% without any crack propagation. With polybutadiene as the soft segment, the shape, microstructure, and conductivity in BS-PU-3 and BS-PU-3-based stretchable electronics kept very stable after soaking in water for 3 days, proving the super waterproof property. An e-skin demo was constructed, and self-healing in pressure sensitivity, mechanical, and electrical properties were verified.

Mechanism of Thermal Degradation-Induced Gel Formation in Polyamide 6/Ethylene Vinyl Alcohol Blend Nanocomposites Studied by Time-Resolved Rheology and Hyphenated Thermogravimetric Analyzer Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy Mass Spectroscopy: Synergistic Role of Nanoparticles and Maleic-anhydride-Grafted Polypropylene

In this study, polyamide 6 (PA) is blended with ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) to yield packaging materials with a balance of mechanical and gas barrier properties. However, the formation of gel-like structures in both polymers because of thermal degradation at high temperatures leads to a processing challenge, particularly during thin-gauge film extrusion. To address this challenge, nanoclays are introduced either directly or via a masterbatch of maleic-anhydride-grafted polypropylene to the PA/EVOH blend and time-resolved rheometry is used to study the effect of different modes of nanoclay incorporation on the kinetics of thermo-oxidative degradation of PA/EVOH blend and its nanocomposites. Time-resolved rheometry measurements allow the acquisition of accurate frequency-dependent linear viscoelastic behavior and offer insights into the rate of degradation or gel formation kinetics and cross-link density. The thermal degradation was studied by thermogravimetric analysis coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and mass spectroscopy, allowing the prediction of the possible reactions that take place during the rheological property measurements. The results show that when nanoclays are incorporated directly, the oxidative reactions occur faster. In contrast, in the masterbatch method, oxidative degradation is hindered. The difference in the behaviors is shown to lie in the different nanoclay distributions in the blends; in the blends prepared by the masterbatch method, the nanoclays are dispersed at the interface. In conclusion, the masterbatch-containing blend nanocomposite would benefit processing and product development.

Thermal Degradation Characteristic and Flame Retardancy of Polylactide-Based Nanobiocomposites

Polylactide (PLA) is one of the most widely used organic bio-degradable polymers. However, it has poor flame retardancy characteristics. To address this disadvantage, we performed melt-blending of PLA with intumescent flame retardants (IFRs; melamine phosphate and pentaerythritol) in the presence of organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT), which resulted in nanobiocomposites with excellent intumescent char formation and improved flame retardant characteristics. Triphenyl benzyl phosphonium (OMMT-1)- and tributyl hexadecyl phosphonium (OMMT-2)-modified MMTs were used in this study. Thermogravimetric analysis in combination with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that these nanocomposites release a smaller amount of toxic gases during thermal degradation than unmodified PLA. Melt-rheological behaviors supported the conclusions drawn from the cone calorimeter data and char structure of the various nanobiocomposites. Moreover, the characteristic of the surfactant used for the modification of MMT played a crucial role in controlling the fire properties of the composites. For example, the nanocomposite containing 5 wt.% OMMT-1 showed significantly improved fire properties with a 47% and 68% decrease in peak heat and total heat release rates, respectively, as compared with those of unmodified PLA. In summary, melt-blending of PLA, IFR, and OMMT has potential in the development of high-performance PLA-based sustainable materials.

Properties related to linear and branched network structure of hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene

The correlation between properties and the network structure of hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) based polyurethanes (PUs) was studied through linear and branched structure polymer matrixes formed by toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and an aliphatic polyisocyanate curing agent (N100). The curing reactions were monitored using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and viscosity build-up. The swelling capacity of PUs decreased with the increase of crosslink density with a stable solubility parameter according to the equilibrium swelling test. Tensile properties of PUs cured by TDI and N100 in different stoichiometric ratios of NCO/OH groups were tested. Both breaking elongation and tensile strength were remarkably improved by N100. The thermal decomposition processes of HTPB/TDI and HTPB/N100 indicated that a branched structure has higher depolymerization temperature, and hence, improved thermal stability. In addition, PU with a branched network prevented the migration of the plasticizer during isothermal accelerated aging due to the higher crosslink density.
