Anisotropic nanoparticles as templates for the crystalline structure of an injection-molded isotactic polypropylene/TiO 2 nanocomposite

From Waste to Value Added Products: Manufacturing High Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Composite from End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) Waste

The use of plastics in automobiles is increasing dramatically due to their advantages of low weight and cost-effectiveness. Various products can be manufactured by recycling end-of-life vehicle (ELV) plastic waste, enhancing sustainability within this sector. This study presents the development of an electromagnetic interference (EMI) shield that can be used for protecting electronic devices in vehicles by recycling waste bumpers of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber from ELVs. EPDM waste was added to a unique combination of 40/60: PP/CaCO3 master batch and conductive nanofiller of carbon nanotubes using an internal melt mixing process. This nanocomposite was highly conductive, with an electrical conductivity of 5.2×10-1S·cm-1 for 5 vol% CNT in a 30 wt% EPDM/70 wt% PP/CaCO3 master batch and showed a high EMI shielding effectiveness of 30.4 dB. An ultra-low percolation threshold was achieved for the nanocomposite at 0.25 vol% CNT. Waste material in the composite improved the yield strain by about 46% and strain at break by 54% in comparison with the same composition without waste. Low cost and light-weight fabricated composite from ELV waste shows high EMI SE for application in electronic vehicles and opens a new path to convert waste to wealth.

Self-assembly in biobased nanocomposites for multifunctionality and improved performance

Concerns of petroleum dependence and environmental pollution prompt an urgent need for new sustainable approaches in developing polymeric products. Biobased polymers provide a potential solution, and biobased nanocomposites further enhance the performance and functionality of biobased polymers. Here we summarize the unique challenges and review recent progress in this field with an emphasis on self-assembly of inorganic nanoparticles. The conventional wisdom is to fully disperse nanoparticles in the polymer matrix to optimize the performance. However, self-assembly of the nanoparticles into clusters, networks, and layered structures provides an opportunity to address performance challenges and create new functionality in biobased polymers. We introduce basic assembly principles through both blending and in situ synthesis, and identify key technologies that benefit from the nanoparticle assembly in the polymer matrix. The fundamental forces and biobased polymer conformations are discussed in detail to correlate the nanoscale interactions and morphology with the macroscale properties. Different types of nanoparticles, their assembly structures and corresponding applications are surveyed. Through this review we hope to inspire the community to consider utilizing self-assembly to elevate functionality and performance of biobased materials. Development in this area sets the foundation for a new era of designing sustainable polymers in many applications including packaging, construction chemicals, adhesives, foams, coatings, personal care products, and advanced manufacturing.

Ultrathin Homogenous AuNP Monolayers as Tunable Functional Substrates for Surface-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization of Small Biomolecules

A series of ultrathin, homogenous gold nanoparticle (AuNP) substrates for surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (SALDI-MS) were prepared using a simple air/water interface approach. These SALDI substrates enabled soft ionization and provided significant improvements in terms of signal intensities and reduced background levels in comparison to other AuNP morphologies for different analytes such as fatty acids, peptides, amino acids, saccharides, and drugs. Through different microscopic and spectroscopic methods, we determined that the packing homogeneity of the [AuNP]_n substrates played a vital role in the efficiency of the SALDI process. We demonstrated that the signal intensities of the investigated analytes were readily optimized by manipulating the thickness of the [AuNP]_n substrates. The desorption/ionization efficiency increased as a function of the number of layers and then reached a saturation point. The optimized [AuNP]_n substrates not only exhibited high SALDI-MS desorption/ionization efficiencies but also showed excellent reproducibilities of the analyte signals.

Drying of electrically conductive hybrid polymer-gold nanorods studied with in situ microbeam GISAXS

Gold nanorods (AuNRs) with conductive polymer shells are interesting colloidal building blocks for electronics. Hybrid particles with AuNR cores and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) or polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) shells were prepared as stable aqueous dispersions. Film formation during the drying of such dispersions is known to affect the electric conductivity of the material. We observed the mechanisms of drying in thin, spray-coated films with grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS). A sparse, uniform monolayer formed because the anisotropic shape of the AuNR inhibited "coffee-ring" effects. We used generalized two-dimensional correlation (2DC) spectroscopy to analyze the GISAXS data and to decipher the microscopic structure formation of the film during drying. Four major scattering peaks were attributed to porous PEDOT, PSS, Au, and the substrate layer. Their time-dependent intensity indicated the sequence of film formation: AuNRs with mobile shells arranged on the substrate first, and PEDOT and then PSS dried sequentially around the gold core. We discuss the final phase-separation of PEDOT:PSS on the hybrid rods.
