Insight into the high-efficiency adsorption of pyrene by Schiff base porous polymers: Modelling and mechanism

Facile synthesis of iminated lignin for enhanced free radical and lead ion scavenging capabilities

Kraft lignin (KL) holds significant potential as a renewable resource for the development of innovative materials that are currently not fully utilized. In this study, a novel iminated lignin (IL) was synthesized by grafting primary amine lignin (N-KL) onto salicylaldehyde. The effects of the dosage and reaction temperature on the nitrogen content of N-KL were evaluated. The maximum nitrogen content in N-KL reached to 3.32 %. Characterization by spectroscopy techniques (FT-IR, XPS, and NMR), elemental analysis, and gel permeation chromatography confirmed the imination of lignin. Additionally, the antioxidant activity of the lignin samples was investigated using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging ability. Moreover, the DPPH radical scavenging capacity of IL-6 (IC50 = 38.6 ± 3.9 μg/mL) was close to that of commercial antioxidant butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) (IC50 = 37.7 ± 4.5 μg/mL). Furthermore, the adsorption equilibrium results indicated that IL-6 had a maximum uptake of 115.6 mg/g Pb2+, which was 3.2-fold higher than that of KL. Kinetic adsorption experiments suggested that IL-6 adsorption follows a pseudo-second-order model. Therefore, the synthesized iminated lignin is a promising candidate for the development of environmentally friendly materials with applications as an antioxidant and lead-ion adsorbent.

Synthesis of amino-functionalized nanocellulose by guanidine based deep eutectic solvent and its application in fine fibers retention

A guanidine-based Deep Eutectic Solvent (DES) consisting of 1,3-diaminoguanidine monohydrochloride and glycerol was utilized to prepare C-CNC from dissolving pulp. The pulp fibers were oxidized to dialdehyde cellulose by periodate, then fibrillated through the hydrogen bonds shear of DES and aminocationized through Schiff base effect of the amino groups in the DES solvent to obtain C-CNC. The results revealed that the characterization of the DES (such as viscosity, polarity, and pH) was related to the molar ratio of glycerol/guanidine-salts. The hydrogen bond network structure of DES solvent with optimal system was simulated by DFT and its damage to fiber hydrogen bond network was predicted. The C-CNC produced under the optimal reaction conditions (molar ratio of 1:2, 90 °C for 2 h) was highly dispersible with an average length and diameter of 85 ± 35 nm and 5.0 ± 1.2 nm, a charge density of 2.916 mol/g. C-CNC exhibited excellent flocculation when added to fine fiber suspensions of chemomechanical slurries, achieving rapid flocculation and settling onto fibers in <1 min. The DES solvent maintained its reactivity after 5 cycles. This study lays the foundation for the batch preparation of nanocellulose in an environmentally friendly manner and its application as a green additive in paper industry.

Green surface functionalization of chitosan with spent tea waste extract for the development of an efficient adsorbent for aspirin removal

This study investigates the feasibility of spent tea waste extract (STWE) as a green modifying agent for the modification of chitosan adsorbent towards aspirin removal. Response surface methodology based on Box-Behnken design was employed to find the optimal synthesis parameters (chitosan dosage, spent tea waste concentration, and impregnation time) for aspirin removal. The results revealed that the optimum conditions for preparing chitotea with 84.65% aspirin removal were 2.89 g of chitosan, 18.95 mg/mL of STWE, and 20.72 h of impregnation time. The surface chemistry and characteristics of chitosan were successfully altered and improved by STWE, as evidenced by FESEM, EDX, BET, and FTIR analysis. The adsorption data were best fitted to pseudo 2nd order, followed by chemisorption mechanisms. The maximum adsorption capacity of chitotea was 157.24 mg/g, as fitted by Langmuir, which is impressive for a green adsorbent with a simple synthesis method. Thermodynamic studies demonstrated the endothermic nature of aspirin adsorption onto chitotea.

LBL Noninvasively Peelable Biointerfacial Adhesives for Cutaneo-Inspired pH/Tactility Artificial Receptors

Besides barrier functions, skin possesses multiple sentiences to external stimuli (e.g., temperature, force, and humidity) for human-outside interaction. Thus, skincare should be taken very seriously, especially by patients with sensory disorders. However, currently available skin-mimicking devices are always limited by so much insufficient response functions and nontunable interface behaviors so as not to realize precise health monitoring and self-defense against injury. Herein, a bioinspired cutaneous receptor-perceptual system (CRPS) patch is presented, integrating hybrid pH indicators and triboelectric nanogenerators into biointerface film-adhesives that are fabricated through facile layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly of amide and Schiff-base linkages between alginate grafted with N-hydroxysuccinimide ester (AN), tannic acid (TA), and polyethylenimine (PEI). This CRPS patch is adhered robustly to the soft-curved skin surface without failure via "molecular suturing," and amino acid enables its benign peel-on-demand from tissue interfaces. Postdamage self-healing brings it without surgical reoperation, avoiding extra cost, pain, as well as infection risks. Significantly, CRPS patches as artificial chemo/mechanoreceptors can remotely visualize skin physiological status by pH-induced chromism using smartphones and prevent skin contact injury by tactility-driven self-powered electrical signals. Overall, the LBL-based strategy to create controllably biointerface-adhesive CRPS patches will usher in a new era of the mobihealth care platform supporting smart diagnosis and self-protection.

Excellent removal performance of 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxaldehyde m-phenylenediamine Schiff base magnetic polymer towards phenanthrene and 9-phenanthrol: Experimental, modeling and DFT calculations studies

Phenanthrene (PTH) and 9-phenanthrol (9-PTH) exhibited severe health threats and ecological hazards, for this reason, exploring a high-efficient removing strategy for PTH and 9-PTH could be considered of great urgency. Herein the 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxaldehyde m-phenylenediamine Schiff base magnetic polymer (magnetic BIPH-PHEN) was successfully fabricated via Schiff base polycondensation reaction and the subsequently one-pot embedded method. The mutual aromatic nucleus of BIPH-PHEN polymer and PTH/9-PTH could form π-π interaction, thus improving the capture ability, the embedded Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles provided the possibility for rapid separation. The physical and chemical properties of the magnetic BIPH-PHEN were systematically characterized. The removal rate of magnetic BIPH-PHEN towards PTH and 9-PTH was 85.65 % and 98.52 %, respectively (PTH or 9-PTH: 8 mg/L; Adsorbent: 0.2 g/L). The DFT calculations including energy calculations and electrostatic potential distribution analyzed the different bonding modes and proposed the most possible bonding modes in the adsorbent/adsorbate system. Moreover, the LUMO and HOMO orbits combined with energy gaps analysis proved the existence and specific types of the π-π interaction. The monolayer adsorption occurred on the homogeneous magnetic BIPH-PHEN surface, simultaneously the chemisorption was dominant. This work not only proposed new sights on assembling magnetic Schiff base polymer for removing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, but also provided a deeper understanding of intramolecular interactions.

Folic acid-modified disulfiram/Zn-IRMOF3 nanoparticles for oral cancer therapy by inhibiting ALDH1A1+ cancer stem cells

The repurposing of old drugs can reduce the cost of drug development and speed up the availability of drugs for clinical use. Disulfiram (DSF) is an approved drug for alcohol abuse. In recent years, it has been established that DSF exerts an antitumor effect via targeted inhibition of ALDH1+ cancer stem cells (CSCs). However, due to its metal ion dependence, easy hydrolysis and low availability, the clinical application of DSF is limited. Previous studies have also shown that Zn²⁺ can inhibit CSCs. Accordingly, we developed a novel metal organic framework (IRMOF3)-Zn²⁺, and DSF was incorporated in the IRMOF3. Folic acid (FA) was subsequently loaded on the surface yielding IRMOF3 (IRMOF3-DSF-FA) for targeted therapy of tumors. The nanoscale IRMOF3-DSF-FA exhibited a high loading capacity, good biocompatibility and strong cell uptake capacity, which could provide metal ions, target tumor tissues and inhibit ALDH1+ CSCs. In vivo experiments showed that IRMOF3-DSF-FA could significantly inhibit the growth of CSCs and tumors, with no significant vital organ damage during treatment. Accordingly, IRMOF3-DSF-FA has great prospects for application as a DSF carrier, opening new horizons for targeted therapy of oral cancer.

Effect of γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles on the composition of montmorillonite and its sorption capacity for pyrene

Fe content and distribution on montmorillonite would probably enhance its sorption capacity for hydrophobic organic pollutants. Thus, Fe modified montmorillonites with different ratios of FeSO₄·7H₂O and Ca-montmorillonite were prepared. The results indicated that γ-Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles were not only generated at the montmorillonite surfaces, but that the γ-Fe₂O₃ also extended the edges of montmorillonite surfaces. The sorption capacities for pyrene were enhanced and even reached 834.79 μg g^-1 with increase in ferrous iron content, but were then suppressed due to aggregation of γ-Fe₂O₃ on montmorillonite surfaces. Furthermore, pyrene was directly observed on γ-Fe₂O₃-montmorillonite surfaces with a lattice spacing parameter of approximately 0.27 nm, indicating that a new phase that mainly contained pyrene was generated during the sorption process. Additionally, after regenerating the γ-Fe₂O₃-montmorillonite composites, they could be reused for at least 5 cycles. It is therefore proposed that the prepared γ-Fe₂O₃-montmorillonite could be exploited as a potential green composite for remediation of hydrophobic organic pollutants in soil and sediment.

High-efficiency adsorption of phenanthrene by Fe3O4-SiO2-dimethoxydiphenylsilane nanocomposite: Experimental and theoretical study

Phenanthrene (PHE), as one of representative polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can cause serious adverse effects on human health, developing effective adsorbents to alleviate PHE contamination is in urgent demand. A novel Fe₃O₄-SiO₂-Dimethoxydiphenylsilane (Fe₃O₄-SiO₂-2DMDPS) nanocomposite was fabricated from encapsulation and grafting process. Magnetic Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles were served as preliminary matrix material, SiO₂ was used to link the magnetic oxide and provide hydroxyl groups for proceeding the silane coupling reaction subsequently, and the aromatic rings in DMDPS could provide active sites for PHE adsorption via π-π interaction. SEM-EDS, TEM, BET, VSM, XRD, FTIR, Raman, Zeta potential, and XPS techniques were used to characterize magnetic nanocomposite. The prepared Fe₃O₄-SiO₂-2DMDPS exhibited an excellent adsorption performance towards PHE, it could maintain 75.97% adsorption capacity after four regeneration cycles. Homogeneous adsorption acted crucial role in the whole adsorption process and film diffusion was the rate-controlling procedure. Theoretical calculations put forward the most favorable bonding modes between Fe₃O₄-SiO₂-2DMDPS and PHE molecules, confirmed the π-π interaction was valid and it usually existed in the form of parallel-displaced. This work might aid us to develop effective modification strategy for Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles and expand its application in the PAHs removing field.
