Abstract
In aqueous and solid media, 2-HP-β/γ-CD inclusion complexes with poly aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) Phenanthrene (PHN), Anthracene (ANT), Benz(a)pyrene (BaP), and Fluoranthene (FLT) were investigated for the first time. The inclusion complexes were characterized and investigated using fluorescence and 1HNMR spectroscopy. The most prevalent complexes consisting of both guests and hosts were those with a 1:1 guest-to-host ratio. The stability constants for the complexes of PHN with 2-HP-β-CD and 2-HP-γ-CD were 85 ± 12 M-1 and 49 ± 29 M-1, respectively. Moreover, the stability constants were found to be 502 ± 46 M-1 and 289 ± 44 M-1 for the complexes of ANT with both hosts. The stability constants for the complexes of BaP with 2-HP-β-CD and 2-HP-γ-CD were (1.5 ± 0.02) × 103 M-1 and (9.41 ± 0.03) × 103 M-1, respectively. The stability constant for the complexes of FLT with 2-HP-β-CD was (1.06 ± 0.06) × 103 M-1. However, FLT was observed to form a weak complex with 2-HP-γ-CD. Molecular dynamic (MD) simulations were used to investigate the mechanism and mode of inclusion processes, and to monitor the atomic-level stability of these complexes. The analysis of MD trajectories demonstrated that all guests formed stable inclusion complexes with both hosts throughout the duration of the simulation time, confirming the experimental findings. However, the flexible Hydroxypropyl arms prevented the PAHs from being encapsulated within the cavity; however, a stable exclusion complex was observed. The main forces that influenced the complexation included van der Waals interactions, hydrophobic forces, and C-H⋯π interaction, which contribute to the stability of these complexes.

Abstract
A rational design of drug delivery systems requires in-depth knowledge not only of the drug itself, in terms of physical state and molecular mobility, but also of how it is distributed among a carrier and its interactions with the host matrix. In this context, this work reports the behavior of simvastatin (SIM) loaded in mesoporous silica MCM-41 matrix (average pore diameter ~3.5 nm) accessed by a set of experimental techniques, evidencing that it exists in an amorphous state (X-ray diffraction, ssNMR, ATR-FTIR, and DSC). The most significant fraction of SIM molecules corresponds to a high thermal resistant population, as shown by thermogravimetry, and which interacts strongly with the MCM silanol groups, as revealed by ATR-FTIR analysis. These findings are supported by Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations predicting that SIM molecules anchor to the inner pore wall through multiple hydrogen bonds. This anchored molecular fraction lacks a calorimetric and dielectric signature corresponding to a dynamically rigid population. Furthermore, differential scanning calorimetry showed a weak glass transition that is shifted to lower temperatures compared to bulk amorphous SIM. This accelerated molecular population is coherent with an in-pore fraction of molecules distinct from bulklike SIM, as highlighted by MD simulations. MCM-41 loading proved to be a suitable strategy for a long-term stabilization (at least three years) of simvastatin in the amorphous form, whose unanchored population releases at a much higher rate compared to the crystalline drug dissolution. Oppositely, the surface-attached molecules are kept entrapped inside pores even after long-term release assays.

Abstract
This work investigates the possibility of using scales of sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax as a low-cost material for the adsorptive removal of methylene blue (MB) cationic dye in aqueous solutions. The physical-chemical characterizations of fish scales in natura (FS-in natura) revealed through thermogravimetry that they are composed of inorganic (hydroxyapatite) and organic (collagen) phases in relatively similar amounts. Spectroscopy analyses show that the interactions of MB with FS-in natura occur mainly in the organic phase layer of the adsorbent. The effects of initial MB concentration (5.0 × 10-4 and 5.0 × 10-3 mol L-1) and temperature (25-55 °C) on the adsorption efficiency of FS-in natura were evaluated. FS-in natura at MB concentration (5.0 × 10-3 and 5.0 × 10-4 mol L-1) exhibited the maximum adsorption capacities of 2.2 × 10-3 mol g-1 at 25 °C and 2.8 × 10-5 mol g-1 at 55 °C, respectively. The pseudo-second-order model represented the adsorption kinetics well, and the equilibrium isotherm data were better correlated using the Langmuir equation. The newly developed neural model demonstrated a high predictive capacity with an R-value greater than 0.99 and reduced values for mean squared error, root mean squared error, and mean absolute error equal to 0.003, 0.055, and 0.0348, respectively. The genetic algorithm was used to optimize the experimental conditions of the process. In conclusion, the sea bass scales have promising prospects as a low-cost alternative material for removing cationic dyes from aqueous solutions.

Abstract
The United States Environmental Protection Agency categorized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as hazardous to humans upon acute and/or chronic exposure. This study investigated the simultaneous adsorption of several PAHs onto graphene wool (GW), thereby providing holistic insights into the competitive adsorption of PAHs onto graphene-based materials. SEM, TEM and FTIR provided evidence for the adsorption of PAHs and successful regeneration of the adsorbent accompanied by distinct morphological changes. Isotherm experiments revealed that adsorption of PAHs was significantly influenced by hydrophobic interactions between the sorbate and hydrophobic surface of GW. The Freundlich multilayer isotherm model best fit the experimental data obtained for both multi-component PAH and single-solute experiments as indicated by the Error Sum of Squares (SSE) obtained from nonlinear regression analysis. Experiments revealed that competitive adsorption had a limiting effect on the overall adsorption capacity as qmax and Kd were higher in single-solute than multi-component PAH experiments. The results suggest that partition distribution coefficients (Kd) between the solid-liquid interphase played a significant role in the overall adsorption and a positive correlation between Kd and LogKow of PAHs was established in single-solute experiments. Sorption-desorption experiments revealed that PAHs were adsorbed with a maximum removal efficiency of 100% at an optimum GW dosage of 2 g/L. Adsorption thermodynamics revealed that PAH adsorption onto GW is spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorbent was regenerated and reused for up to six times and its efficiency remained fairly constant.

Abstract
This study describes the sustainable and eco-friendly synthesis of the silica-based mesoporous structure from the use of alternative amorphous silica extracted from rice husk ash (RHA). The mesoporous material was called MCM-48 (RHA), and its application as adsorbent to the antimony (Sb) remediation in environmental samples was tested. The adsorbent was prepared by an efficient and sustainable hydrothermal method, which exhibited an amorphous framework with type IV isotherms and type H1 hysteresis, and surface area, total pore volume, and pore diameter values of 820.9 m2 g-1, 0.6 cm3 g-1, and 3.7 nm, respectively. In addition, the MCM-48 (RHA) exhibited a three-dimensional cubic mesostructure (Ia3d space-group symmetry) with a narrow mesopore distribution, uniform spherical particles, and well-defined architecture. Multivariate optimization using a factorial design (24) was employed in the adsorption tests of Sb. The variables evaluated and the optimum conditions obtained were (i) adsorbent mass (45 mg); (ii) adsorption time (115 min); (iii) pH 2; and (iv) Sb initial concentration of 8 mol L-1. In these conditions, we found a maximum adsorption efficiency of Sb in the order of 95%. The adsorbent material proposed in this study proved to be efficient for Sb remediation in water samples under different experimental conditions. A total of five samples were analyzed and Sb concentrations on the order of 8 ppm were added, in which a removal efficiency of Sb raging between 88 and 96% was obtained for the remediation in real samples. In addition, the low cost of the synthesis of MCM-48 (RHA) in combination with its high and fast adsorption capacities offers a great promise for wastewater remediation, which makes it very attractive for environmental approaches.

Abstract
Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a new type of crystalline porous polymers known for chemical stability, excellent structural regularity, robust framework, and inherent porosity, making them promising materials for capturing various types of pollutants from aqueous solutions. This review thoroughly presents the recent progress and advances of COFs and COF-based materials as superior adsorbents for the efficient removal of toxic heavy metal ions, radionuclides, and organic pollutants. Information about the interaction mechanisms between various pollutants and COF-based materials are summarized from the macroscopic and microscopic standpoints, including batch experiments, theoretical calculations, and advanced spectroscopy analysis. The adsorption properties of various COF-based materials are assessed and compared with other widely used adsorbents. Several commonly used strategies to enhance COF-based materials' adsorption performance and the relationship between structural property and sorption ability are also discussed. Finally, a summary and perspective on the opportunities and challenges of COFs and COF-based materials are proposed to provide some inspiring information on designing and fabricating COFs and COF-based materials for environmental pollution management.

Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as hazardous pollutants, could be removed by constructed wetlands (CWs). While the traditional substrate of CWs has a weak adsorption capacity for PAHs, in this study, the carbonous fillers-activated carbon (AC) and biochar-were added into the substrate of surface flow CWs to improve the removal performance of benzofluoranthrene (BbFA), a typical PAH. The results showed that the BbFA removal efficiencies in CWs with the addition of AC and biochar were 11.8 and 1.2% higher than those in the Control group, respectively. Simultaneously, the removal efficiencies of NO3 --N were 42.8 and 68.4% in these two CWs, while the BbFA content in the substrate and plants with the addition of carbon was lower than that in the Control group. The addition of carbonous filler reduced the absorption of PAHs by plants in CWs and enhanced microbial degradation. The microbial community results showed that the relative abundance of Proteobacteria, especially γ-proteobacteria, was higher with the addition of fillers, which related to PAH degradation.

Abstract
The biodegradation of naphthalene using low-density polyethylene (LDPE) immobilized Exiguobacterium sp. RKS3 (MG696729) in a packed bed bioreactor (PBBR) was studied. The performance of a continuous PBBR was evaluated at different inlet flow rates (IFRs) (20-100 mL/h) under 64 days of operation. The maximum naphthalene removal efficiency (RE) was found at low IFR, and it further decreased with increasing IFRs. In a continuous PBBR, the external mass transfer (EMT) aspect was analysed at various IFRs, and experimental data were interrelated between Colburn factor (JD) and Reynolds number (NRe) as [Formula: see text] . A new correlation [Formula: see text] was obtained to predict the EMT aspect of naphthalene biodegradation. Andrew-Haldane model was used to evaluate the bio-kinetic parameters of naphthalene degradation, and kinetic constant νmax, Js, and Ji were found as 0.386 per day, 13.6 mg/L, and 20.54 mg/L, respectively.

Abstract
The adsorption method is generally considered a promising technique to remove inorganic and organic contaminants in an economically and environmentally friendly superior manner. In this study, organic montmorillonite sodium alginate composites were prepared, in which, montmorillonite and cationic surfactant (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB) in different added amounts were coagulated with sodium alginate using CaCl2 as the crosslinking agent. The morphological properties of the composites were characterized thoroughly and employed in three typical target pollutants of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (acenaphthene, fluorene, and phenanthrene) by batch adsorption experiments from aqueous solution. The composites provide an efficient alternative for PAHs removals. The composites could be stably separated and regenerated with methyl alcohol. Furthermore, the adsorption kinetic and isotherm data were well described by the Elovich kinetic and the Freundlich isotherm model, respectively. According to these, the adsorption process occurred via multilayer adsorption on the composite's energetically heterogeneous surface. Moreover, pore diffusion and hydrophobicity played a dominant role in the adsorption mechanism. Overall, our study offers a developed adsorbent that has the advantage of being recyclable, low cost, biodegradable and biocompatible for effectively removing PAHs from aqueous solution.

Abstract
Naphthalene (NAP) is found as a pollutant in water, soil, and air, and adsorption is the most prominent removal process of this compound, among the methods studied. A study concerning the types of adsorbents and the parameters with the greatest influence on the adsorption process is interesting to direct future works on new adsorbents. The use of multivariate data analysis tools becomes an appealing way to compile data obtained from bibliographic reviews and to establish a behavior in NAP adsorption. This work aims to evaluate the parameters with greater influence on NAP adsorption process regarding adsorption capacity (qeexp) with the principal component analysis (PCA), and to group common NAP adsorbents by chemical characteristics through hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA). The variables qeexp, S, [NAP]0, T, CT, and [Ads] were used to perform PCA with correlation matrix. For the HCA, the variables S, [NAP]0, T, CT, and [Ads] with average linkage method (UPGMA) and Euclidean distance were used. Through PCA, it is possible to infer that S and [NAP]0 are the factors with greater influence in qeexp of NAP, while T, CT, and [Ads] have little correlation. PCA also shows that activated charcoal is the adsorbent with higher qeexp. HCA grouped the adsorbents into four groups by their chemical classes, except group A. Both PCA and HCA methods show themselves as potential tools to evaluate a data set of NAP adsorption processes.

Abstract
In this work, adsorption behaviors of pyrene (PYR), fluoranthene (FLT), phenanthrene (PHE), and fluorene (FLU) on the coordination cluster [Zn5(H2Ln)6](NO3)4]·8H2O·2CH3OH (Zn5) were studied. The adsorption mechanism and spectrum analyses revealed that the synergistic effect of hydrophobic interaction, π-π stacking, and N-H···π interaction played a crucial role during the adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacities of PYR, FLT, PHE, and FLU were 406.4, 399.7, 153.7, and 114.3 mg g-1, respectively, resulting from the Langmuir isotherm model. Quick removal of PYR and FLT was found in kinetic experiments with the adsorption equilibrium being reached within 1 min. Competitive adsorption indicated that the adsorption sites for PYR, FLT, PHE, and FLU on Zn5 were identical, and synergistic effects also existed in the adsorption process. Therefore, Zn5 has the potential to be used as an adsorbent in the field of wastewater treatment.

Abstract
The rice husk ash (RHA) was used as an alternative source of silica for the synthesis of the functionalized mesoporous material, which was used in the removal of the PAHs naphthalene (Nap), benzo[b]fluoranthene (B[b]F), benzo[k]fluoranthene (B[k]F), and benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) from aqueous media. The PABA-MCM-41 (RHA) was characterized using FTIR, TGA, SAXS, and N2 adsorption-desorption analyses. Removal experiments were performed to determine the initial concentrations, individual adsorption in comparison with the mixture of the PAHs, PABA-MCM-41 (RHA) amount, pH, time, and temperature, and the results obtained were statistically analyzed. The PABA-MCM-41 (RHA) presented the SBET, VT, and DBJH values of 438 m2 g-1, 0.41 cm3 g-1, and 3.59 nm, respectively, and good thermal stability. The qe values found in the kinetic equilibrium for the PAHs mixture followed increasing order: Nap < B[a] P < B[k]F < B[b]F, with removal percentages of 89.08 ± 0.00, 93.85 ± 0.28, 94.54 ± 0.10, and 97.80 ± 0.05%, respectively. Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals have attracted greater attention due to their single or complex risks. It is urgent to find useful methods to remove these two pollutants together. In this study, SBA15 and MCM-41 were selected and used for the simultaneous removal of pyrene and copper from aqueous solution. Batch experiments were conducted systematically by investigating the adsorption behavior and effects including kinetics, isotherms, ionic strength and pH effects. Experimental results showed that the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order model fitted the adsorption behavior better. The solution pH values and ionic strength affected the adsorption behavior greatly. Furthermore, the synergistic or antagonistic effects could be observed on the adsorption of pyrene and copper onto MCM-41 and SBA15, respectively. The synergistic and antagonistic effects of pyrene and copper onto mesoporous silica may be attributed to the size of pyrene⁻copper complex and the average pore size of adsorbents. With the higher pore size, the complex would be adsorbed onto the inner surface of MCM-41 which showed synergistic effect on the adsorption of pyrene and copper. This study shows new guidelines and insight into the study of adsorption behavior of PAHs and heavy metals from aquatic environments.

Abstract
A series of SBA-15 with different modifications have been successfully prepared and applied as adsorbents to remove polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from aqueous solutions. The morphology and structural properties of the chemically modified materials are all similar to those of pure SBA-15, and thus the difference of PAHs adsorption capacity can be directly attributed to the different functional groups, which is favorable to deeply explore the adsorption mechanism. Adsorption kinetics and isotherm experiments for naphthalene (Nap), anthracene (Ant), and pyrene (Pyr) were carried out, and the results reveal that the adsorption processes follow a pseudo-second-order rate equation and the equilibrium can be achieved within 120 min for Nap and Ant, whereas only 90 min for Pyr, indicating that the more hydrophobic molecules, the easier and faster adsorption can be obtained. All of the adsorption isotherms fit well with the Freundlich model, suggesting the unevenly distributed active sites on adsorbents. The phenyl-functionalized materials possess the highest adsorption capacity, implying that the π-π interaction is the most primary interaction and plays the predominant role in the studied PAHs adsorption, superior to the acidic and hydrophobic interaction. Our research sheds light on the design and synthesis of advanced and highly efficient adsorbents to remove PAHs from aqueous solutions.

Abstract
Metal azolate framework-6 (MAF-6) was pyrolyzed at 1000°C to yield MOF-derived carbons (MCs). The obtained MCs were used to eliminate aromatic hydrocarbons, including polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs; e.g., naphthalene (NAP), anthracene (ATC), and pyrene (PRN)) and benzene (BZ) from water via adsorption. The adsorption results over the MCs were compared with that of pristine MAF-6 and commercial activated carbon (AC). MC obtained after 24h (MC-24) exhibited a remarkable adsorption efficiency compared to that of the other MCs (obtained after different durations), MAF-6, and AC. For example, MC-24 led to adsorptions of NAP around 17 and 2.5 times those of pristine MAF-6 and AC, respectively. Or, the maximum adsorption capacities (Q0) of MAF-6, AC and MC-24 for NAP were 14, 104 and 237mg/g, respectively. Moreover, Q0 values of MC-24 for ATC and PRN were also very high of 284 and 307mg/g, respectively. Based on the properties of PAHs and the hydrophobicity of MC-24, hydrophobic interaction was suggested as the main mechanism for the adsorption of PAHs and BZ. In addition, MC-24 can be recycled by washing with acetone with little loss in performance. Therefore, MC-24 is recommended as a competitive adsorbent for aromatic hydrocarbon removal from water.

Miniaturized solid-phase extraction of macrolide antibiotics in honey and bovine milk using mesoporous MCM-41 silica as sorbent. J Chromatogr A 2018; 1537:10-20. [PMID: 29336808 DOI: 10.1016/j.chroma.2018.01.005] [Citation(s) in RCA: 23] [Impact Index Per Article: 3.3] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/11/2017] [Revised: 12/24/2017] [Accepted: 01/02/2018] [Indexed: 12/14/2022]
Abstract
A simple and effective method of miniaturized solid-phase extraction (mini-SPE) was developed for the simultaneous purification and enrichment of macrolide antibiotics (MACs) (i.e. azithromycin, clarithromycin, erythromycin, lincomycin and roxithromycin) from honey and skim milk. Mesoporous MCM-41 silica was synthesized and used as sorbent in mini-SPE. Several key parameters affecting the performance of mini-SPE procedure were thoroughly investigated, including sorbent materials, amount of sorbent and elution solvents. Under the optimized condition, satisfactory linearity (r2 > 0.99), acceptable precision (RSDs, 0.3-7.1%), high sensitivity (limit of detection in the range of 0.01-0.76 μg/kg), and good recoveries (83.21-105.34%) were obtained. With distinct advantages of simplicity, reliability and minimal sample requirement, the proposed mini-SPE procedure coupled with ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography and quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry could become an alternative tool to analyze the residues of MACs in complex food matrixes.
