Ultra-high adsorption capacity and selective removal of Congo red over aminated graphene oxide modified Mn-doped UiO-66 MOF

A Novel Composite Material UiO-66-Br@MBC for Mercury Removal from Flue Gas: Preparation and Mechanism

To reduce the mercury content in flue gas from coal-fired power plants and to obtain high-performance, low-cost mercury adsorbents, a novel composite material was prepared by structural design through the in situ growth method. Functionalization treatments such as the modification of functional groups and multilayer loading of polymetallic were conducted. These materials include the MOF material UiO-66 and modified biochar doped with Fe/Ce polymetallic, both of which contain unsaturated metal centrals and oxygen-containing functional groups. On the basis of obtaining the effects of adsorption temperature and composite ratio on the Hg0 removal characteristics, coupling and synergistic mechanisms between the various types of active centers included were investigated by using a variety of characterization and analysis tools. The active adsorption sites and oxidation sites were identified during this process, and the constitutive relationship between the physicochemical properties and the performance of Hg0 removal was established. The temperature-programmed desorption technique, Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulation, and adsorption kinetic model were employed to reveal the mechanism of Hg0 removal. The results showed that the UiO-66-Br@MBC composite adsorbent possessed an excellent Hg0 removal performance at adsorption temperatures ranging from 50 to 250 °C, and targeted construction of adsorption and oxidation sites while maintaining thermal stability. The Hg0 removal by the composites is the result of both adsorption and oxidation. The micropores and small pore mesopores in the samples provide physical adsorption sites. The modified biochar acts as a carrier to facilitate the full exposure of the central metal zirconium ions, the formation of more active sites, and the process of electron transfer. The doping modification of the Br element can enhance the overall redox ability of the sample, and the introduced Fe and Ce polymetallic ions can work in concert to promote the oxidation process of Hg0. The excellent regulation of the ratio between adsorption and oxidation sites on the surface of the composite material finally led to a significant boost in the samples' capacity to remove Hg0.

Recyclable Fe3O4@UiO-66-PDA core-shell nanomaterials for extensive metal ion adsorption: Batch experiments and theoretical analysis

With the ever-increasing challenge of heavy metal pollution, the imperative for developing highly efficient adsorbents has become apparent to remove metal ions from wastewater completely. In this study, we introduce a novel magnetic core-shell adsorbent, Fe3O4@UiO-66-PDA. It features a polydopamine (PDA) modified zirconium-based metal-organic framework (UiO-66) synthesized through a simple solvothermal method. The adsorbent boasts a unique core-shell architecture with a high specific surface area, abundant micropores, and remarkable thermal stability. The adsorption capabilities of six metal ions (Fe3+, Mn2+, Pb2+, Cu2+, Hg2+, and Cd2+) were systematically investigated, guided by the theory of hard and soft acids and bases. Among these, three representative metal ions (Fe3+, Pb2+, and Hg2+) were scrutinized in detail. The activated Fe3O4@UiO-66-PDA exhibited exceptional adsorption capacities for these metal ions, achieving impressive values of 97.99 mg/g, 121.42 mg/g, and 130.72 mg/g, respectively, at pH 5.0. Moreover, the adsorbent demonstrated efficient recovery from aqueous solution using an external magnet, maintaining robust adsorption efficiency (>80%) and stability even after six cycles. To delve deeper into the optimized adsorption of Hg2+, density functional theory (DFT) analysis was employed, revealing an adsorption energy of -2.61 eV for Hg2+. This notable adsorption capacity was primarily attributed to electron interactions and coordination effects. This study offers valuable insights into metal ion adsorption facilitated, by magnetic metal-organic framework (MOF) materials.

The Synthesis of Amino-Acid-Anchored Two-Dimensional Silicoaluminophosphates and Congo Red Adsorption Application

Two-dimensional (2D) materials with nanometer thickness have the advantage of a large specific surface area and excellent surface accessibility. They have great potential for adsorption, catalysis, and many other applications. 2D zeolitic silicoaluminophosphates (SAPOs) can be synthesized through a dual structure directing agent (SDA) strategy. But the materials have been primarily used in their organic-free form. In this work, we demonstrate that the same synthesis strategy is effective for developing amino-acid-anchored 2D SAPOs through a one-step synthesis. Because of the addition of amino acids, the surficial amino and carboxylic groups serve as active sites for adsorption and catalysis. Congo red adsorption is used to evaluate the potential of using the organic functional groups as active adsorption sites. The 2D SAPO materials have demonstrated excellent Congo red removal efficiency with close to complete removal for certain concentrations. The effects of the amino acid concentration and hydrothermal synthesis time on material morphology development will be discussed. Thorough characterization by SEM, TEM, FTIR, XRD, and nitrogen adsorption has been done to reveal the properties of the amino-acid-anchored 2D SAPOs.

Synthesis of fenugreek gum-based metal-organic framework (FG/Zr-AIPA MOF) composite beads for sequestration of heavy metal ions from aqueous solution

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a prominent class of materials due to their large surface area and customized structures. This gives them specificity and high adsorption capacity while they lack mechanical strength and reusability. Integrating MOFs with polysaccharide matrix may retain MOF characteristics along with imparting structural integrity. In the present study, zirconium MOF-based fenugreek composite (FG/Zr-AIPA) beads were synthesised by a single droplet method and utilised for removal of Cr(VI), Pb(II) and Fe(III) from aqueous solution. The structure, morphology and composition of beads were evaluated by FTIR, XRD, TGA, BET, FESEM, EDX, XPS and zeta potential analysis. Adsorption isotherm, kinetics and thermodynamics were studied for Cr(VI), Pb(II) and Fe(III) adsorption. Adsorption kinetics and isotherm study revealed that all the metal ions were adsorbed through a monolayer chemisorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity was 344.43, 270.02 and 223.21 mg g-1 for Cr(VI), Pb(II) and Fe(III), respectively, based on the Langmuir isotherm study. The thermodynamics study revealed that the interaction between the metal ions and the composite beads was spontaneous and endothermic. The FG/Zr-AIPA composite beads exhibited good reusability for the removal of Cr(VI), Pb(II) and Fe(III). The results open new possibilities for the preparation of polysaccharide MOF-based composite beads which exhibit substantial potential for water treatment applications.

Fabrication of an Fe-Doped ZIF-67 Derived Magnetic Fe/Co/C Composite for Effective Removal of Congo Red

The dyes in printing and dyeing wastewater are harmful to the human body and the environment. It is essential to develop practical and effective adsorbents to deal with them. In this study, an Fe-doped, ZIF-67 derived Fe/Co/C composite material with strong magnetism was successfully synthesized. The effects of pH, initial concentration, and adsorption time on the properties of the adsorbent were investigated. To further improve the removal efficiency and enhance the practicality, potassium peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was added to the system due to its Fenton-like effect. Then, an Fe/Co/C composite was used with PMS to remove Congo red (CR) with a 98% removal of 250 mg·L-1. Moreover, for its high saturation magnetization of 85.4 emu·g-1, the Fe/Co/C composite can be easily recovered by applying a magnetic field, solving the problem that powdery functional materials are difficult to recover and, thus, avoiding secondary pollution. Furthermore, since the composite material was doped before carbonization, this synthetic strategy is flexible and the required metal elements can be added at will to achieve different purposes. This study demonstrates that this Fe-doped, ZIF-67 derived magnetic material has potential application prospects for dye adsorption.

Selectivity-Enhanced Electroreduction of CO2 to CO at Novel Ru-Linked-GO Nanohybrids: the Role of Nanoarchitecture

Recently, global-scale efforts have been conducted for the electroreduction of CO2 as a potentially beneficial pathway for the conversion of greenhouse gases to useful chemicals and renewable fuels. This study focuses on the development of selective and sustainable electrocatalysts for the reduction of aqueous CO2 to CO. A RuIIcomplex [Ru(tptz)(ACN)Cl2] (RCMP) (tptz = 2,4,6-tris(2-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine, ACN = acetonitrile) was prepared as a molecular electrocatalyst for the CO2 reduction reaction in an aqueous solution. Density functional theory-calculated frontier molecular orbitals suggested that the tptz ligand plays a key role in dictating the electrocatalytic reactions. The RCMP electrocatalyst was grafted onto the graphene oxide (GO) surface both noncovalently (GO/RCMP) and covalently (GO-RCMP). The field emission scanning electron microscopy and elemental distribution analyses revealed the homogeneous distribution of the complex onto the GO sheet. The photoluminescence spectra confirmed accelerated charge-transfer in both nanohybrids. Compared to the bare complex, the GO-RCMP and GO/RCMP nanohybrids showed enhanced electrocatalytic activity, achieving >95% and 90% Faradaic efficiencies for CO production at more positive onset potentials, respectively. The GO-RCMP nanohybrid demonstrated outstanding electrocatalytic activity with a current of ∼84 μA. The study offers a perspective on outer- and inner-sphere electron-transfer mechanisms for electrochemical energy conversion systems.

Green synthesis of carbon quantum dots from teak leaves biomass for in situ precipitation and regenerative-removal of methylene blue-dye

The objective of this study was to completely eliminate environmentally harmful cationic organic dye from aqueous solutions using the one-step ultrasonication method, renowned for its energy efficiency, user-friendliness, and minimal requirement for chemical resources, making it particularly suitable for large-scale applications. To achieve effective environmental remediation, we employed carbon dots derived from teak leaf biomass (TBCDs) layered with graphene oxide. We conducted a thorough characterization of the TBCDs using UV-vis spectroscopy (with absorption peaks at λmax = 208 and 276 nm), FTIR spectroscopy (confirming the presence of various functional groups including -OH, -CH, C = O, COO-, C-O-C, and = C-H), Raman spectroscopy (with bands at 1369 cm-1 (D-Band) and 1550 cm-1 (G-Band), and an intensity ratio (ID/IG) = 0.88, indicating structural defects correlated with the sp3 hybridization sites on the TBCDs), XRD analysis (indicating an amorphous nature of particles), HRTEM imaging (showing homogeneous dispersal of TBCDs with typical sizes ranging from 2 to 10 nm), FESEM analysis (showing a flat surface and minuscule particles), and Zeta potential analysis (revealing a surface charge peak at -51.0 mV). Our adsorption experiments yielded significant results, with a substantial 50.1 % removal rate and an impressive adsorption capacity of 735.2 mg g-1. Theoretical adsorption parameters were rigorously analyzed to understand the adsorption behavior, surface interactions, and mechanisms. Among these models, the Langmuir isotherm in conjunction with pseudo-second-order kinetics provided an exceptional fit (with R2 values closer to 1) for our system. The Gibbs free energy (ΔG) was found to be negative at all temperatures, indicating the spontaneity of the reaction. Regarding mechanism, electrostatic attraction ((+ve) MB dye + (- ve) TBCDs), π-π stacking adsorption facilitated by the graphitic structure, formation of multiple hydrogen bonds due to polar functional groups, and a pore-filling mechanism wherein the cationic MB dye fills the pores of TBCDs with graphene oxide layers, forming an adduct were identified. Furthermore, we demonstrated the regenerative capacity of our system by effectively extracting and recovering the MB dye (with a regeneration rate of 77.1%), utilizing ethyl alcohol as the solvent. These findings not only provide valuable insights into the adsorption capabilities of TBCDs but also highlight the potential of our approach in the recovery of expensive cationic organic dye compounds from polluted environments.

Optimization of hydrothermal synthesis conditions of Bidens pilosa-derived NiFe2O4@AC for dye adsorption using response surface methodology and Box-Behnken design

The presence of stable and hazardous organic dyes in industrial effluents poses significant risks to both public health and the environment. Activated carbons and biochars are widely used adsorbents for removal of these pollutants, but they often have several disadvantages such as poor recoverability and inseparability from water in the post-adsorption process. Incorporating a magnetic component into activated carbons can address these drawbacks. This study aims to optimizing the production of NiFe2O4-loaded activated carbon (NiFe2O4@AC) derived from a Bidens pilosa biomass source through a hydrothermal method for the adsorption of Rhodamine B (RhB), methyl orange (MO), and methyl red (MR) dyes. Response surface methodology (RSM) and Box-Behnken design (BBD) were applied to analyze the key synthesis factors such as NiFe2O4 loading percentage (10-50%), hydrothermal temperature (120-180 °C), and reaction time (6-18 h). The optimized condition was found at a NiFe2O4 loading of 19.93%, a temperature of 135.55 °C, and a reaction time of 16.54 h. The optimum NiFe2O4@AC demonstrated excellent sorption efficiencies of higher than 92.98-97.10% against all three dyes. This adsorbent was characterized, exhibiting a well-developed porous structure with a high surface area of 973.5 m2 g-1. Kinetic and isotherm were studied with the best fit of pseudo-second-order, and Freundlich or Temkin. Qmax values were determined to be 204.07, 266.16, and 177.70 mg g-1 for RhB, MO, and MR, respectively. By selecting HCl as an elution, NiFe2O4@AC could be efficiently reused for at least 4 cycles. Thus, the Bidens pilosa-derived NiFe2O4@AC can be a promising material for effective and recyclable removal of dye pollutants from wastewater.

Tuning the Topology of Two-Dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks through Site-Selective Synthetic Strategy

Tuning the topology of two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) is of paramount scientific interest but remains largely unexplored. Herein, we present a site-selective synthetic strategy that enables the tuning of 2D COF topology by simply adjusting the molar ratio of an amine-functionalized dihydrazide monomer (NH2 -Ah) and 4,4',4''-(1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl)tribenzaldehyde (Tz). This approach resulted in the formation of two distinct COFs: a clover-like 2D COF with free amine groups (NH2 -Ah-Tz) and a honeycomb-like COF without amine groups (Ah-Tz). Both COFs exhibited good crystallinity and moderate porosity. Remarkably, the clover-shaped NH2 -Ah-Tz COF, with abundant free amine groups, displayed significantly enhanced adsorption capacities toward crystal violet (CV, 261 mg/g) and congo red (CR, 1560 mg/g) compared to the non-functionalized honeycomb-like Ah-Tz COF (123 mg/g for CV and 1340 mg/g for CR), underscoring the pivotal role of free amine functional groups in enhancing adsorption capacities for organic dyes. This work highlights that the site-selective synthetic strategy paves a new avenue for manipulating 2D COF topology by adjusting the monomer feeding ratio, thereby modulating their adsorption performances toward organic dyes.

Hierarchical Mg/Al hydrotalcite oxide hollow microspheres with excellent adsorption capability towards Congo red

A novel citrate anion-intercalated Mg/Al layered double hydroxide (CA-LDH) is synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal process. The synthesized CA-LDH is a hollow flower-like microsphere composed of thin nanoflakes (10 nm in thickness). After calcination, the formed Mg/Al layered double oxide (CA-LDO) hollow microspheres possess a high specific surface area of 247.8 m2 g-1 and a high pore volume of 0.97 cm3 g-1, which endow them with excellent adsorption ability towards Congo red (CR). The maximum adsorption capacity of CR onto CA-LDO can reach up to 1883 mg g-1. The significantly improved adsorption capacity of CA-LDO can be attributed to its unique structures of hierarchical hollow microspheres, in which the hierarchical porous shell layer provides enough adsorption sites to anchor the dye molecules, and the hollow core can preserve the absorbed dye. This study provides a promising novel adsorbent which can be used for efficient water remediation.

Magnetically separable Co0.6Fe2.4O4/MIL-101-NH2 adsorbent for Congo red efficient removal

The development of effective and practical adsorbents for eliminating pollutants still remains a significant challenge. Herein, we synthesized a novel magnetically separable composite, Co0.6Fe2.4O4/MIL-101-NH2, through the in-situ growth of MIL-101-NH2 on magnetic nanoparticles, designed specifically for the removal of Congo red (CR) from aqueous solutions. MIL-101-NH2 possessed high BET surface area (240.485 m2•g-1) and facile magnetic separation function and can be swiftly separated (within 30 s) through an external magnetic field post-adsorption. The investigation systematically explored the influence of crucial parameters, including adsorbent dosage, pH, adsorption duration, temperature, and the presence of interfering ions, on CR adsorption performance. Findings indicate that CR adsorption adheres to the pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model. Thermodynamic analysis reveals the spontaneity, endothermic nature, and orderly progression of the adsorption process. Remarkably, the adsorbent with 0.1 g•L-1 boasts an impressive maximum adsorption capacity of 1756.19 mg•g-1 for CR at 298.15 K, establishing its competitive advantage. The reuse of the adsorbent over 5 cycles remains 78% of the initial adsorption. The CR adsorption mechanisms were elucidated, emphasizing the roles of π-π interactions, electrostatic forces, hydrogen bonding, and metal coordination. Comparison with other dyes, such as methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO), and exploration of adsorption performance in binary dye systems, demonstrates the superior capacity and selectivity of this adsorbent for CR. In conclusion, our magnetically separable metal-organic framework (MOF)based composite presents a versatile and effective solution for CR removal, with promising applications in water treatment and environmental remediation.

Graphene oxide@Fe3O4-decorated iota-carrageenan composite for ultra-fast and highly efficient adsorption of lead (II) from water

The aggravated problem of lead pollution, especially in aquatic environments, necessitates the development of eminent adsorbents that could radically solve this environmental problem. Hence, a new composite was constructed based on iota carrageenan (i.Carr), graphene oxide (GO) and magnetite (Fe3O4) for removing noxious Pb2+ ions. The GO@Fe3O4-i.Carr composite was characterized by VSM, SEM, XPS, XRD, FTIR and Zeta potential. The removal of Pb2+ ions attained a quick equilibrium of almost 30 min with a removal efficiency reaching 93.68 %. The removal of Pb2+ was boosted significantly, in the order of GO@Fe3O4-i.Carr(1:1) > GO@Fe3O4-i.Carr(1:3) > GO@Fe3O4-i.Carr(3:1). Moreover, acquired experimental data fitted the pseudo 2nd order kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm model with a maximal monolayer adsorption capacity reached 440.05 mg/g. Notably, after five adsorption runs, the composite maintained its removal efficiency exceeding 74 %. The assumed adsorption mechanisms of Pb2+ onto GO@Fe3O4-i.Carr were complexation, precipitation, Lewis acid-base, and electrostatic attraction forces. Overall, the GO@Fe3O4-i.Carr composite elucidated the auspicious adsorbent criteria, comprising fast adsorption with high performance, ease-separation and tolerable recyclability, advising its feasible use to decontaminate water bodies from hazardous heavy metals.

Separation of dye from aqueous solution by a new gravity compression and aeration system

Filtration is one of the important technologies for separating suspended particles. Under the condition of gravity compression, the filtration density can be increased and the separation effect of suspended particles can be improved. Considering the complex composition and the difficulty in degrading dye in industrial wastewater, a gravity compression aeration system with a modified polyester fibre ball (denoted as MPFB) was evaluated for the separation of dye from water. Congo red azo dye solution (0-40 mg/L) was selected as the model treatment compound. The MPFB was prepared by adjusting the concentrations of alkali (Quality score 0-25%), β-cyclodextrin (0∼80 g/L), reaction temperature (40-90°C), and silane coupler concentration (Concentration fractions 0-0.8%). We used Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to characterise the MPFB. The separation was affected significantly by adsorption conditions such as MPFB dose and pH. The lower the MPFB dose, the higher the expected adsorption capacity. For the treatment of a dye solution at 500 mg/L, 100% removal was achieved with 48 g/L MPFB, at pH 8 during adsorption under non-circulation aeration. For 24 h of reaction, the system could reach the maximum adsorption capacity of 11.2 mg/g, which followed the pseudo-first order kinetics model and the intraparticle diffusion model. We discovered that circulation aeration provided the best adsorption and electrostatic and hydrogen bonding were the dominant components of adsorption. Overall, the system is a promising technology and has the potential to treat large volumes of dye wastewater.

Magnetic silica/graphene oxide nanocomposite supported ionic liquid-manganese complex as a powerful catalyst for the synthesis of tetrahydrobenzopyrans

A novel magnetic silica/graphene oxide nanocomposite supported ionic liquid/manganese complex (Fe3O4@SiO2-NH2/GO/IL-Mn) is prepared, characterized and its catalytic application is investigated. The Fe3O4@SiO2-NH2/GO/IL-Mn catalyst was synthesized via chemical immobilization of graphene oxide on Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles followed by modification with ionic liquid/Mn complex. This nanocomposite was characterized by using SEM, TGA, FT-IR, PXRD, EDX, TEM, nitrogen adsorption-desorption, and VSM analyses. The catalytic application of Fe3O4@SiO2-NH2/GO/IL-Mn was studied in the synthesis of tetrahydrobenzo[b]pyrans (THBPs) in water solvent at RT. This nanocatalyst was successfully recovered and reused at least eight times without a significant decrease in its activity.

Ultrasound-assisted adsorption of organic dyes in real water samples using zirconium (IV)-based metal-organic frameworks UiO-66-NH2 as an adsorbent

The utilization of dye adsorption through metal-organic frameworks represents an eco-friendly and highly effective approach in real water treatment. Here, ultrasound assisted adsorption approach was employed for the remediation of three dyes including methylene blue (MB), malachite green (MG), and congo red (CR) from real water samples using zirconium(IV)-based adsorbent (UiO-66-NH2). The adsorbent was characterized for structural, elemental, thermal and morphological features through XRD, XPS, FTIR, thermogravimetric analysis, SEM, BET , and Raman spectroscopy. The adsorption capacity of adsorbent to uptake the pollutants in aqueous solutions was investigated under different experimental conditions such as amount of UiO-66-NH2 at various contact durations, temperatures, pH levels, and initial dye loading amounts. The maximum removal of dyes under optimal conditions was found to be 938, 587, and 623 mg g-1 towardMB, MG, and CR, respectively. The adsorption of the studied dyes on the adsorbent surface was found to be a monolayer and endothermic process. The probable mechanism for the adsorption was chemisorption and follows pseudo-second-order kinetics. From the findings of regeneration studies, it was deduced that the adsorbent can be effectively used for three consecutive cycles without any momentous loss in its adsorption efficacy. Furthermore, UiO-66-NH2 with ultrasound-assisted adsorption might help to safeguard the environment and to develop new strategies for sustainability of natural resources.

Nanoarchitectonics of Bimetallic MOF@Lab-Grade Flexible Filter Papers: An Approach Towards Real-Time Water Decontamination and Circular Economy

This study presents a novel approach to decontaminate ferrocyanide-contaminated wastewater. The work effectively demonstrates the use of bimetallic Mo/Zr-UiO-66 as a super-adsorbent for rapid sequestration of Prussian blue, a frequently found iron complex in cyanide-contaminated soils/groundwater. The exceptional performance of Mo/Zr-UiO-66 is attributed to the insertion of secondary metallic sites, which deliver synergistic effects, benefiting the inherent qualities of the framework. Moreover, to extend the industrial applications of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in real-world scenarios, an approach is delivered to structure the nanocrystalline powders into MOF-based macrostructures. The work demonstrates an interfacial process to develop continuous MOF nanostructures on ordinary laboratory-grade filter papers. The novelty of the work lies in the development of robust free-standing filtration materials to purify PB dye-contaminated water. Additionally, the work embraces a circular economy concept to address problems related to resource scarcity, excessive waste production, and maintenance of economic benefits. Consequently, the PB dye-loaded adsorbent waste is re-employed for the adsorption of heavy metals (Pb2+ and Cd2+ ). Simultaneously, the study aims to address the problems related to the real-time handling of powdered adsorbents, and the generation of ecologically harmful secondary waste, thereby, progressing toward a more sustainable system.

A study on the performance of a novel adsorbent UiO-66 modified by a nickel on removing tetracycline in wastewater

In the present study, Ni-UiO-66 was synthesized to improve the adsorption efficiency of tetracycline (TC) in wastewater treatment. To this end, nickel doping was performed in the preparation process of UiO-66. The synthesized Ni-UiO-66 was characterized by XRD, SEM and EDS, BET, FTIR, TGA, and XPS for obtaining the lattice structure, surface topography, specific surface area, surface functional groups, and thermostability. More specifically, Ni-UiO-66 has a removal efficiency and adsorption capacity of up to 90% and 120 mg g-1, respectively, when used to treat TC. The presence of ions HCO3-, SO42-, NO3- and PO43- slightly affects the TC adsorption. A 20 mg L-1 humic acid reduces the removal efficiency from 80% to 60%. The performed analyses revealed that Ni-UiO-66 had similar adsorption capacity in wastewater with different ion strengths. The variation of adsorption capacity with the adsorption time was fitted using a pseudo-second-order kinetic equation. Meanwhile, it is found that the adsorption reaction occurs only on the monolayer of the UiO-66 surface so the adsorption process can be simulated using the Langmuir isotherm model. The thermodynamic analysis indicates that the adsorption of TC is an endothermic reaction. Electrostatic attraction, hydrogen-bond interaction, and π-π interaction might be the main reasons for the adsorption. The synthesized Ni-UiO-66 has well adsorption capacity and stable structure. Accordingly, it is expected to achieve a good prospect in industrial applications and wastewater treatment plants.

Interface synthesis of Cu-BTC/PVDF hybrid membranes and their selective adsorption activity toward Congo red

Considering the surface affinity of MOFs and separation advantages of polymer membranes, herein, a one-step interface synthesis strategy is used in the construction of Cu-BTC/PVDF hybrid membranes, in which Cu2+ ions and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H3BTC) were dissolved in ionized water and n-octanol separately, and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) films were laid at the interface of two immiscible solvents. As a result, Cu-BTC was generated and readily self-assembled inside the PVDF films. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method were used to characterize Cu-BTC/PVDF hybrid membranes, and Congo red (CR) was selected as the target dye to evaluate the surface adsorption activity of the hybrid membranes. Batch adsorption tests under various conditions were conducted to optimize the adsorption capacity, adsorption kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamics, which were analyzed to further explore the adsorption behavior. Based on this, the adsorption mechanism was discussed. It is worth noting that because of the π-π stacking interaction and hydrogen bonding, an extraordinary adsorption capacity of CR was achieved, and the good separation advantage and the cyclic adsorption performances endow the resulting Cu-BTC/PVDF hybrid membranes with promising applications in the removal of organic dyes from practical wastewater.

The Defects, Physicochemical Properties, and Surface Charge of MIL-88A (Al) Crystal Were Regulated for Highly Efficient Removal of Anionic Dyes: Preparation, Characterization, and Adsorption Mechanism

In this paper, the physicochemical properties, surface charge, and crystal defects of MIL-88A (Al) were controlled by adjusting the ratio of metal ligands and temperature in the synthetic system without the addition of surfactants. The adsorption properties of different crystals for Congo red (CR) were studied. Among them, MIL-88A (Al)-130 and MIL-88A (Al)-d have the best adsorption properties. The maximum adsorption capacities are 600.8 and 1167 mg · g^-1, respectively. Compared with MIL-88A (Al)-130, the adsorption performance of MIL-88A (Al)-d was increased by 94.2%, and the adsorption rate was increased by about 4 times. It can be seen that increasing the proportion of metal ligands within a certain range will improve the adsorption capacity. The structure and morphology of the adsorbent were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, EDS, TGA, BET, and zeta potential. The effects of time, temperature, pH, initial solution concentration, and dosage on CR adsorption properties were systematically discussed. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isothermal model can well describe the adsorption process, which indicates that the adsorption process is a single-layer chemisorption occurring on a uniform surface. According to thermodynamics, this adsorption is an endothermic process. The mechanism of CR removal is proposed as the electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bond, metal coordination effect, π-π conjugation, crystal defect, and pore-filling effect. In addition, MIL-88A (Al)-d has good repeatability, indicating that it is a good material for treating anionic dye wastewater.

Performance assessment of the MOF adsorbent MIL-101 for removal of gaseous benzene and toluene: kinetic column modeling and simulation studies of fixed-bed adsorption

The adsorbent MIL-101, a metal-organic framework material, was synthesized, characterized, and tested for removal of relatively low concentrations of benzene and toluene adsorbates (200 ppm) from a gas phase in a continuous flow system. Breakthrough studies were modeled based on Thomas, Yoon-Nelson, Yan, Clark, Bohart-Adams, bed-depth service time, modified dose response, Wolborska, and Gompertz in the continuous fixed-bed operation. Through statistical analysis, it was determined which type of regression is most suitable for the studied models, linear or nonlinear. By comparing the values of error functions, it was possible to infer that the Thomas model is the best match for the experimental breakthrough curves for benzene (with maximum solid-phase concentration qT=126,750 mg/g) and the Gompertz model for toluene (parameter β=0.01 min-1). Overall, when compared to the model parameters of the linear regression, those obtained through nonlinear regression show a stronger correlation with the results found experimentally. Thus, this type of regression is more suitable for the adsorption model analysis. The liquid film and intraparticle diffusion analysis was described, and it was suggested that both types of diffusion contribute to the adsorption mechanism of benzene and toluene on MIL-101. As for the isotherms, the adsorption process was better fitted by the Freundlich isotherm. The reusability of MIL-101 after six cycles was 76.5% for benzene and 62.4% for toluene, indicating that MIL-101 was a better adsorbent for the removal of benzene in comparison with toluene.

Selective adsorption of anionic and cationic dyes on mesoporous UiO-66 synthesized using a template-free sonochemistry method: kinetic, isotherm and thermodynamic studies

In this study, template-free mesoporous UiO-66(U) has been successfully synthesized in shortened time by sonochemical methods and provided energy savings. The synthesized mesoporous UiO-66(U) demonstrated irregular morphology particle around 43.5 nm according to the SEM image. The N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherm indicated an irregular, 8.88 nm pore width mesoporous structure. Ultrasonic irradiation waves greatly altered mesoporous materials. A mechanism for mesoporous UiO-66(U) formation has been proposed based on the present findings. Sonochemical-solvent heat saves 97% more energy than solvothermal. Mesoporous UiO-66(U) outperformed solvothermal-synthesized UiO-66(S) in adsorption. These studies exhibited that mesopores in UiO-66 promote dye molecule mass transfer (MO, CR, and MB). According to kinetics and adsorption isotherms, the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models matched experimental results. Thermodynamic studies demonstrated that dye adsorption is spontaneous and exothermically governed by entropy, not enthalpy. Mesoporous UiO-66(U) also showed good anionic dye selectivity in mixed dye adsorption. Mesoporous UiO-66(U) may be regenerated four times while maintaining strong adsorption capability.

Adsorption efficacy of functionalized Cu-BDC MOFs tethered 2-mercaptobenzimidazole analogue: A comparative study

A novel metal-organic framework [MOFs], and 2-[benzo [d]thiazol-2-ylthio)-3-hydroxy acrylaldehyde-Cu-benzene dicarboxylic acid was synthesized by solvothermal method and characterized using p-XRD, FSEM-EDX, TGA, BET, FTIR. The tethered organic linker, 2-[benzo [d]thiazol-2-ylthio)-3-hydroxyacrylaldehyde was commonly known as 2-mercaptobenimidazole analogue [2-MBIA]. Analysis of BET disclosed that addition of 2-MBIA to Cu-benzene dicarboxylic acid [Cu-BDC], reduced the crystallite size from 70.0 nm to 65.90 nm, surface area from 17.95 to 17.02 m² g^-1 and enhances the pore size from 5.84 nm with 0.027 cm³ g^-1 pore volume to 8.74 nm with 0.361 cm³ g^-1 pore volume. Batch experiments were conducted to optimize pH, adsorbent dosage, and, Congo red (CR) concentration. The adsorption percentage of CR on the novel MOFs was 54%. Adsorption kinetic studies revealed that the uptake adsorption capacity at equilibrium was 184.7 mg/g from pseudo-first-order kinetics which gave a good fit with the experimental data. Intraparticle diffusion model explained the process of the adsorption mechanism: diffusion from the bulk solution onto the porous surface of the adsorbent. Freundlich and Sips models were the best fit models of the several non-linear isotherm models. Temkin isotherm suggested the adsorption of CR on MOFs was of an exothermic nature.

Efficient Adsorption and Extraction of Glutathione S-Transferases with Glutathione-Functionalized Graphene Oxide-Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane Composite

Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are important type-II detoxification enzymes that protect DNA and proteins from damage and are often used as protein tags for the expression of fusion proteins. In the present work, octa-aminopropyl caged polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (OA-POSS) was prepared via acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane and polymerized on the surface of graphene oxide (GO) through an amidation reaction. Glutathione (GSH) was then modified to GO-POSS through a Michael addition reaction to obtain a GSH-functionalized GO-POSS composite (GPG). The structure and characteristics of the as-prepared GPG composite were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravity analysis, and surface charge analysis. The specific binding interactions between glutathione and GST gave GPG favorable adsorption selectivity towards GST, and other proteins did not affect GST adsorption. The adsorption behavior of GST on the GPG composite conformed to the Langmuir isotherm model, and the adsorption capacity of GST was high up to 364.94 mg g^-1 under optimal conditions. The GPG-based solid-phase adsorption process was applied to the extraction of GST from a crude enzyme solution of pig liver, and high-purity GST was obtained via SDS-PAGE identification.

Amine-functionalized MOF-derived carbon materials for efficient removal of Congo red dye from aqueous solutions: simulation and adsorption studies

In this study, a novel polyethyleneimine (PEI) modified MOF-derived carbon adsorbent (PEI@MDC) was proposed, which exhibited significant adsorption capacity for Congo Red (CR) in aqueous solutions. FT-IR and XPS results showed that PEI was successfully grafted onto MDC, increasing the content of amine groups on the surface of MDC. The adsorption process conformed to the Langmuir isotherm adsorption model and pseudo-second-order kinetic equation, indicating that the adsorption of CR on PEI@MDC was covered by a single layer, and the adsorption process was controlled by chemical processes. According to the Langmuir model, the maximum adsorption capacity at 30 °C was 1723.86 mg g-1. Hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions between CR and PEI@MDC surface functional groups were the main mechanisms controlling the adsorption process. After five adsorption-desorption cycles, PEI@MDC still showed a high adsorption capacity for CR, indicating that the adsorbent had an excellent regeneration ability.

Modulation of Crystal Growth of an Energetic Metal-Organic Framework on the Surfaces of Graphene Derivatives for Improved Detonation Performance

Energetic materials are a special class of energy materials composed of C, H, O, and N. Their safety always deteriorates with increasing energy. Regulating the properties of energetic materials to meet application requirements is one of the focuses of research in this field. Energetic metal-organic frameworks (EMOFs) are good candidates as primary explosives to replace lead azide (LA) and other explosives containing toxic metal elements. However, safety remains the biggest concern in applications. In this paper, crystal morphology modulation of EMOF was carried out by stepwise coordination of metal ions and energetic ligands on surfaces of graphene oxide (GO) and amino-functionalized graphene oxide (AGO). Two energetic composite materials, Cu-AFTO@GO and Cu-AFTO@AGO, were successfully synthesized and also the EMOF (Cu-AFTO). The structures and morphologies of these materials were fully characterized. The thermal decomposition behaviors, mechanical sensitivity, and electrostatic discharge sensitivity were investigated in detail. The electric ignition ability of EMOF and two composite materials was tested. This study shows that it is possible to reduce the diameter of EMOF crystals from hundreds of microns to tens of nanometers by a stepwise coordination method. The high electrical conductivity and sensitivity-reducing effect of GO and/or AGO allow the nanosized EMOF crystals to have a lower ignition threshold and lower sensitivity.

Hollow and porous TiO2 in PVA matrix nanocomposite green synthesis using ionic liquid micelle for Congo red removal from contaminated water

A new green procedure has been applied to prepare TiO₂ nanocomposite in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix using an aqueous micelle solution of ionic liquid 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium bromide by determining critical micelle concentration (CMC). The COSMO-SAC model has been used to calculate the activity coefficient of water and understand the water molecules' behavior in the synthesis mixture. The prepared nanocomposite was porous and layered that has been characterized using FT-IR, XRD, DSC, TGA, SEM, EDX, and elemental mapping. The prepared nanocomposite has been used to remove Congo red dye from contaminated water with the adsorption process. The Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherms have been used for modeling equilibrium adsorption of dye removal. Also, the optimized process factors have been evaluated that could achieve 97% dye removal in the following conditions: pH = 12, T = 25 ℃, and t = 45 min using 0.2 g TiO₂@PVA (Mesh 100)/L of 10 ppm Congo red aqueous solution. Also, the efficiency of the nanocomposite was 88% after 5 recovery cycles from the optimized condition.

Facile synthesis of CoFe2O4@MIL-53(Al) nanocomposite for fast dye removal: Adsorption models, optimization and recyclability

The global occurrence of textile dyes pollution has recently emerged, posing a serious threat to ecological systems. To abate dye contamination, we here developed a novel magnetic porous CoFe₂O₄@MIL-53(Al) nanocomposite by incorporating magnetic CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles with MIL-53(Al) metal-organic framework. This nanocomposite possessed a surface area of 197.144 m² g^-1 and a pore volume of 0.413 cm³ g^-1. The effect of contact time (5-120 min), concentration (5-50 mg L^-1), dosage (0.1-1.0 g L^-1), and pH (2-10) on Congo red adsorption was clarified. CoFe₂O₄@MIL-53(Al) could remove 95.85% of Cong red dye from water with an accelerated kinetic rate of 0.6544 min^-1 within 10 min. The kinetic and isotherm models showed the predominance of Bangham and Temkin. According to Langmuir, the maximum uptake capacities of CoFe₂O₄@MIL-53(Al), CoFe₂O₄, and MIL-53(Al) adsorbents were 43.768, 17.982, and 15.295 mg g^-1, respectively. CoFe₂O₄@MIL-53(Al) was selected to optimize Cong red treatment using Box-Behnken experimental design. The outcomes showed that CoFe₂O₄@MIL-53(Al) achieved the highest experimental uptake capacity of 35.919 mg g^-1 at concentration (29.966 mg L^-1), time (14.926 min), and dosage (0.486 g L^-1). CoFe₂O₄@MIL-53(Al) could treat dye mixture (methylene blue, methyl orange, Congo red, malachite green, and crystal violet) with an outstanding removal efficiency of 81.24% for 30 min, and could be reused up to five cycles. Therefore, novel recyclable and stable CoFe₂O₄@MIL-53(Al) is recommended to integrate well with real dye treatments systems.

A Fe3O4 nanospheres/carbon core–shell structure for effective removal of pollutants from water

The treatment of wastewater by adsorption is a good alternative technique and attracts extensive attention worldwide due to its versatility, scalability, and low operational costs. In this work, a Fe3O4 nanospheres/carbon core–shell structure is fabricated by combination of a template method and calcination. The morphology and crystal structure of the synthesized composite are characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, and from nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms, confirming that the carbon layer with a porous structure is successfully loaded onto the surface of the face-centered cubic Fe3O4 nanospheres to form a core–shell structure. The adsorption performance of the Fe3O4 nanospheres/carbon core–shell structure is investigated by studying the effects of the initial pH value of the solution, the contact time, the initial concentration of the pollutants, the adsorption temperature, and the amount of adsorbent. The Fe3O4 nanospheres/carbon core–shell structure effectively removes heavy metal Chromium(VI) and a reactive light yellow dye. The results of batch experiments show that the removal efficiencies of heavy metal Chromium(VI) and the reactive light yellow dye are close to 100% under optimized conditions. The good adsorption performance of the Fe3O4 nanospheres/carbon core–shell structure toward various types of pollutants suggests a potential application in wastewater treatment.

Historical development and prospect of intimately coupling photocatalysis and biological technology for pollutant treatment in sewage: A review

Through the synergistic effect of photocatalysis and biodegradation, intimately coupling photocatalysis and biological (ICPB) technology could improve the removal rate and mineralization rate of refractory pollutants and reduce the toxicity of intermediate products. ICPB system was characterized with the advantages of simple operation, low energy consumption and high treatment efficiency. As a new sewage treatment technology, ICPB system has shown great potential in the treatment of refractory pollutants, and has been widely concerned. In this study, the research progress of photocatalyst, carrier and biofilm in ICPB system were discussed, and the degradation mechanism was introduced. The shortcomings of the current ICPB system were pointed out, and the possible research directions of ICPB in the future were proposed. This review aimed to deepen the understanding of ICPB technology and promoted the further development of ICPB technology in the treatment of refractory pollutants.

Preparation of new MOF-808/chitosan composite for Cr(VI) adsorption from aqueous solution: Experimental and DFT study

In this study, a series of Zirconium-based MOF and chitosan composites (MOF-808/chitosan) were synthesized as efficient adsorbent for Cr(VI) ions elimination from aqueous solution. MOF-808/chitosan structure and morphology was characterized by FE-SEM, EDX, XRD, BET, zeta potential analysis, FT-IR, XPS techniques. The kinetic studies ascertained that Cr(VI) adsorption over MOF-808/chitosan followed pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption isotherms fitted the Langmuir isotherm model, implying on homogeneously adsorption of Cr(VI) on the surface of MOF-808/chitosan. According to the Langmuir model, the maximum capacity was obtained to be 320.0 mg/g at pH 5. Thermodynamic investigation proposed spontaneous (ΔG° < 0), disordered (ΔS° > 0) and endothermic (ΔH° > 0) for adsorption process. Besides, MOF-808/chitosan displayed an appropriate reusability for the elimination of Cr(VI) ions from their aqueous solutions for six successive cycles. DFT study of the adsorption process displayed and confirmed the role of hydrogen bonding and electrostatic attraction simultaneously.

Rapid degradation of Congo red wastewater by Rhodopseudomonas palustris intimately coupled carbon nanotube - Silver modified titanium dioxide photocatalytic composite with sodium alginate

With a large number of Congo red used in textiles, Congo red wastewater was not easily degraded, resulting in environmental and health-related problems. In order to improve the degradation efficiency of Congo red wastewater, A novel intimately coupled photocatalysis and biodegradation (ICPB) system was prepared by coupling Rhodopseudomonas palustris (R. Palustris), carbon nanotube - silver modified titanium dioxide photocatalytic composite (CNT-Ag -TiO₂, CAT) and sodium alginate (SA) (R. palustris/CAT@SA). Compared with immobilized CAT and R. palustris, the R. palustris/CAT@SA improved the degradation and removal rates of Congo red by 14.3% and 42.1%, and the COD removal rates by 76% and 44.6%, respectively. The mechanism of the degradation of Congo red by the new ICPB was that the Congo red on the surface of the support was degraded into long-chain alkanes by the superoxide and hydroxyl radicals of CAT product, and then the long-chain alkanes were completely mineralization by R. Palustris, which reduced the accumulation of intermediates in the photocatalysis. Most of the Congo red was adsorbed to the interior of the carrier was degraded into aromatic hydrocarbons by R. Palustris, and then oxidized and degraded by CAT, and a small part of the Congo red would be directly mineralized by R. Palustris. A novel technical solution of R. palustris/CAT@SA provided a potential application to the degradation of dye wastewater.

Sulfonated graphene oxide impregnated cellulose acetate floated beads for adsorption of methylene blue dye: optimization using response surface methodology

New multi-featured adsorbent beads were fabricated through impregnation of sulfonated graphene (SGO) oxide into cellulose acetate (CA) beads for fast adsorption of cationic methylene blue (MB) dye. The formulated SGO@CA composite beads were thoroughly characterized by several tools including FTIR, TGA, SEM, XRD, XPS and zeta potential. The optimal levels of the most significant identified variables affecting the adsorption process were sequential determined by the response surface methodology (RSM) using Plackett–Burman and Box–Behnken designs. The gained results denoted that the surface of SGO@CA beads displayed the higher negative charges (− 42.2 mV) compared to − 35.7 and − 38.7 mV for pristine CA and SGO, respectively. In addition, the floated SGO@CA beads demonstrated excellent floating property, fast adsorption and easy separation. The adsorption performance was accomplished rapidly, since the adsorption equilibrium was closely gotten within 30 min. Furthermore, the adsorption capacity was greatly improved with increasing SGO content from 10 to 30%. The obtained data were followed the pseudo-second order kinetic model and agreed with Langmuir adsorption isotherm model with a maximum adsorption capacity reached 234.74 mg g⁻¹. The thermodynamic studies designated the spontaneity and endothermic nature of MB dye adsorption. Besides, the floated beads exposed acceptable adsorption characteristics for six successive reuse cycles, in addition to their better adsorption selectivity towards MB dye compared to cationic crystal violet and anionic Congo red dyes. These findings assume that the formulated SGO@CA floated beads could be used effectively as highly efficient, easy separable and reusable adsorbents for the fast removal of toxic cationic dyes.

Novel reusable amine-functionalized cellulose acetate beads impregnated aminated graphene oxide for adsorptive removal of hexavalent chromium ions

In this study, a multi-featured adsorbent was developed for the adsorptive removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr⁶⁺) ions. Herein, aminated graphene oxide (GO-NH₂) was firstly synthetized and incorporated into cellulose acetate beads (CA) which were followed by surface amine-functionalization process. Varies characterization tools such as FT-IR spectroscopy, SEM, TGA, XRD, BET, XPS and zeta potential were employed to ensure the successful fabrication of GO-NH₂@CA-NH₂ composite beads. An enhancement in the adsorption performance was attained, while the adsorption equilibrium was closely gotten within only 60 min. Therefore, the adsorption capacity was boosted with increasing GO-NH₂ ratio in the beads matrix from 10 to 25%. Furthermore, the adsorption process agreed with Freundlich isotherm model with a supreme adsorption capacity of 410.21 mg/g at pH 2, while data followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Besides, thermodynamic studies denoted that the adsorption process was endothermic, randomness and spontaneous. The composite beads retained better adsorption characteristics for seven sequential cycles with ease of separation. The proposed adsorption of Cr⁶⁺ onto GO-NH₂@CA-NH₂ surface occurred via the electrostatic interactions, reduction process and coordinate-covalent bonds. These findings hypothesize that the fabricated GO-NH₂@CA-NH₂ beads could be act as easy-separable and reusable adsorbent for efficient adsorption of Cr⁶⁺ ions.
