Synthesis of cobalt ferrite nanoparticles from waste iron ore tailings and spent lithium ion batteries for photo/sono-catalytic degradation of Congo red

Poly Meta-Aminophenol (PmAP) as a Solid-State Electron Mediator in the Z-Scheme, Ag3PO4/CoFe2O4 Heterojunction: Mineralization of Highly Concentrated Bisphenol-A and Reactive Dyes Water Pollutants

This study demonstrated the effectiveness of poly meta-aminophenol (PmAP) as a solid electron mediator in the Z-scheme photocatalytic system for organic pollutants (viz. bisphenol-A and reactive dyes) mineralization and also illustrated how PmAP transported the photogenerated electrons from an O2-emitting photocatalyst (Ag3PO4) to a H2-emitting photocatalyst (CoFe2O4) enabling enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation. The PmAP/Ag3PO4-CoFe2O4 (PAC-10), was prepared by a two-step process and characterized by various analytical methods to assess the impact of PmAP on optical, photocatalytic, and electrochemical characteristics of the CoFe2O4 (CFO)/Ag3PO4 composite. The morphological investigation revealed that the PmAP sheet was nicely decorated with evenly distributed Ag3PO4 and CoFe2O4 particles. The M-S plot and impedance analyses were used to assess the electrochemical capabilities of the catalyst. Z-scheme charge transfer pathways were well supported by the radical trapping experiment and HRTEM analysis of Pt photodeposited PAC-10 photocatalysts during the photoreaction. Because of its magnetic nature and ease of synthesis, the PAC-10 offers an easily recyclable Z-scheme photocatalytic system that has the potential for purifying wastewater with high concentrations (up to 100 mg/L) of organic pollutants within 30 min of visible light exposition.

Reuse of iron ore tailings as an efficient adsorbent to remove dyes from aqueous solution

In this work, an iron ore tailings sample (IOT), collected from a tailings dam in Minas Gerais, Brazil, was characterized. The IOT presented point of zero charge of ∼ 6, specific surface area of 4 m2 g-1, and was mainly composed of hematite and quartz. Subsequently, experiments were performed to evaluate the adsorption of an anionic dye, Direct Red 80 (DR80), and a cationic dye, Methylene Blue (MB), by the IOT, studying the effects of its dose (doseIOT) and the solution initial pH (pH0). The DR80 removal increased with the decrease of the pH0 while the opposite effect occurred in the experiments with the MB, suggesting the process is governed by the adsorption resulting from electrostatic forces. The increase in the doseIOT increased the DR80 and MB removal, which can be attributed to the greater availability of adsorption sites. Pseudo-second order kinetic (R2 > 0.9994) and the Langmuir equilibrium isotherm (R2 > 0.9842) models described well the DR80 adsorption by the IOT, being the reaction rate and maximum adsorption capacity higher at lower pH0. In a regeneration experiment, it was possible to desorb almost entirely the DR80 using a NaOH solution. Additionally, the regenerated IOT was able to adsorb the DR80, demonstrating its reusability. In a preliminary assay, the IOT decreased the colour of the textile wastewater sample at pH0 3. Therefore, the results indicate the potential use of IOT for removing electric-charged pollutants by adsorption, especially anionic ones under acidic conditions.

Numerical analysis of radiative hybrid nanomaterials flow across a permeable curved surface with inertial and Joule heating characteristics

The water-based Cu and CoFe2O4 hybrid nano liquid flow across a permeable curved sheet under the consequences of inertial and Lorentz forces has been reported in this analysis. The Joule heating and Darcy Forchheimer effects on fluid flow have been also examined. In the presence of copper (Cu) and cobalt iron oxide (CoFe2O4) nanoparticles, the hybrid nano liquid is synthesized. Radiation and heat source features are additionally incorporated to perform thermodynamics analysis in detail. The second law of thermodynamics is employed in order to estimate the overall generation of entropy. The nonlinear system of PDEs (partial differential equations) is transformed into a dimensionally-free set of ODEs (ordinary differential equations) by employing a similarity framework. The Mathematica built in package ND Solve method is applied to compute the resulting set of nonlinear differential equations numerically. Along with the velocity, and temperature profiles, skin friction and Nusselt number are also computed. Figures and tables illustrate the effects of flow factors on important profiles. Evidently, the outcomes reveal that hybrid nanofluid (Cu + CoFe2O4+H2O) is more progressive than nanofluid (Cu + H2O) and base fluid (H2O) in thermal phenomena. Furthermore, the velocity profile is improved with the greater values of curvature parameter, while the inverse trend is observed against the magnetic parameters. Also, the velocity and energy distribution of hybrid nano-liquid flow boosts with the inclusion of Cu and CoFe2O4 nanoparticles into the base fluid. Velocity distribution diminishes with the increment of volume friction. For high values of inertial factor, skin friction improve while velocity and Nusselt number declines.

Heterojunction assembled CoO/Ni(OH)2/Cu(OH)2 for effective photocatalytic degradation and supercapattery applications

Mixed multimetallic-based nanocomposites have been considered a promising functional material giving a new dimension to environmental remediation and energy storage applications. On this concept, a hybrid ternary CoO/Ni(OH)2/Cu(OH)2 (CNC) composite showing sea-urchin-like morphology was synthesized via one-pot hydrothermal approach, and its photocatalytic and electrochemical performances were investigated. The photocatalytic performance was explored using Congo red (CR) as a dye pollutant under visible light illumination. The presence of mixed phases of ternary metal ions could minimize the recombination efficacy of photogenerated charge carriers on the basis of the heterojunction mechanism, resulting in 90% degradation of CR dye (40 mg L-1). The effect of scavengers coupled with electrochemical experiments revealed O2-. radical as the predominating species responsible for the degradation of CR. From the electrochemical analysis of CNC, the well-distinguished redox peaks indicated the redox-type nature with a specific capacity of 405 C g-1. For practical applications, an supercapattery (CNC( +)|KOH|AC( -)) was assembled furnishing an energy density of 42 W h kg-1 at a power density of 5160 W kg-1 at 5 A g-1 along with a high capacity retention and coulombic efficiency of 98.83% over 5000 cycles.

Reduced Graphene Oxide-Modified Spinel Cobalt Ferrite Nanocomposite: Synthesis, Characterization, and Its Superior Adsorption Performance for Dyes and Heavy Metals

This work is dedicated to the synthesis, characterization, and adsorption performance of reduced graphene oxide-modified spinel cobalt ferrite nanoparticles. The as-synthesized reduced graphene oxide cobalt ferrite (RGCF) nanocomposite has been characterized using FTIR spectroscopy, FESEM coupled with EDXS, XRD, HRTEM, zeta potential, and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) measurements. FESEM proves the particle size in the range of 10 nm. FESEM, EDX, TEM, FTIR, and XPS analyses provide the proof of successful incorporation of rGO sheets with cobalt ferrite nanoparticles. The crystallinity and spinel phase of cobalt ferrite nanoparticles have been shown by XRD results. The saturation magnetization (M _s) was measured as 23.62 emu/g, proving the superparamagnetic behavior of RGCF. The adsorption abilities of the synthesized nanocomposite have been tested using cationic crystal violet (CV) and brilliant green (BG) and anionic methyl orange (MO) and Congo red (CR) dyes. The adsorption trend for MO, CR, BG, and As(V) follows RGCF > rGO > CF at neutral pH. Adsorption studies have been accomplished by optimizing parameters like pH (2-8), adsorbent dose (1-3 mg/25 mL), initial concentration (10-200 mg/L), and contact time at constant room temperature (RT). To further investigate the sorption behavior, isotherm, kinetics, and thermodynamic studies have been conducted. Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models suited better for the adsorption of dyes and heavy metals. The maximum adsorption capacities (q _m) obtained have been found as 1666.7, 1000, 416.6, and 222.2 mg/g for MO, CR, BG, and As, respectively, with operational parameters such as T = 298.15 K; RGCF dose: 1 mg for MO and 1.5 mg each for CR, BG, and As. Thus, the RGCF nanocomposite was found to be an excellent adsorbent for the removal of dyes and heavy metals.

Green synthesis of ZnFe2O4@ZnO nanocomposites using Chrysanthemum spp. floral waste for photocatalytic dye degradation

The occurrence of textile dyeing wastewater discharged into the environment has been recently increasing, resulting in harmful effects on living organisms and human health. The use of green nanoparticles for water decontamination has received much attention. Floral waste can be extracted with the release of natural compounds, which act as reducing and stabilizing agents during the biosynthesis of nanoparticles. Herein, we report the utilization of Chrysanthemum spp. floral waste extract to synthesize green ZnFe₂O₄@ZnO (ZFOZx) nanocomposites for the photocatalytic degradation of Congo red under solar light irradiation. The various molar ratio of ZnFe₂O₄ (0-50%) was incorporated into ZnO nanoparticles. The surface area of green ZFOZx nanocomposites was found to increase (7.41-42.66 m² g^-1) while their band gap energy decreased from 1.98 eV to 1.92 eV. Moreover, the results exhibited the highest Congo red dye degradation efficiency of 94.85% at a concentration of 5.0 mg L^-1, and a catalyst dosage of 0.33 g L^-1. The ^•O₂^- reactive species played a vital role in the photocatalytic degradation of Congo red dye. Green ZFOZ3 nanocomposites had good recyclability with at least three cycles, and an excellent stability. The germination results showed that wastewater treated by ZFOZ3 was safe enough for bean seed germination. We expect that this work contributes significantly to developing novel green bio-based nanomaterials for environmental remediation as well as reducing the harm caused by flower wastes.

A controllable one-pot hydrothermal synthesis of spherical cobalt ferrite nanoparticles: synthesis, characterization, and optical properties

We herein report the controllable synthesis of spherical cobalt ferrite nanoparticles with average crystallite size in the range of 3.6–12.9 nm using a facile, eco-friendly, hydrothermal method. The hydrothermal treatment was carried out by utilizing cobalt nitrate, ferric nitrate, and ammonium hydroxide in the presence and absence of Arabic gum as a surfactant agent. The purity and crystallinity of the products were tuned by varying reaction conditions such as reaction time (0.5–8 h), reaction temperature (120–180 °C), percentage of ethylene glycol (0–100% (v/v)), pH (8–9.6), and amount of Arabic gum (0–2 g). We characterized the prepared products using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis (EDS), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) patterns, and UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS). The optimal hydrothermal treatment was performed at 180 °C and pH 9.6 for 4 h in aqueous media. The results also revealed that the as-prepared spinel cobalt ferrite nanoparticles have an estimated optical band gap energy in the range of ca. 1.6–1.9 eV, indicating the semiconducting characteristics of the products.
