Polymerizations based on triple-bond building blocks

Access to 2,4-Disubstituted Pyrrole-Based Polymer with Long-Wavelength and Stimuli-Responsive Properties via Copper-Catalyzed [3+2] Polycycloaddition

Pyrrole-based polymers (PBPs), a type of fascinating functional polymers, play a crucial role in materials science. However, efficient synthetic strategies of PBPs with diverse structures are mainly focused on conjugated polypyrroles and still remain challenging. Herein, an atom and step economy protocol is described to access various 2,4-disubstituted PBPs by in situ formation of pyrrole core structure via copper-catalyzed [3+2] polycycloaddition of dialkynones and diisocyanoacetates. A series of PBPs is prepared with high molecular weight (Mw up to 18 200 Da) and moderate to good yield (up to 87%), which possesses a fluorescent emission located in the green to yellow light region. Blending the PBPs with polyvinyl alcohol, the stretchable composite films exhibit a significant strengthening of the mechanical properties (tensile stress up to 59 MPa, elongation at break >400%) and an unprecedented stress-responsive luminescence enhancement that over fourfold fluorescent emission intensity is maintained upon stretching up to 100%. On the basis of computational studies, the unique photophysical and mechanical properties are attributed to the substitution of carbonyl chromophores on the pyrrole unit.

Efficient Conversion of Inert Nitriles to Multifunctional Poly(5-amino-1,2,3-triazole)s via Regioselective Click Polymerization with Azide Monomers under Ambient Conditions

Nitrile compounds are abundant, stable, cheap, and readily available natural and chemical industrial sources. However, the efficient conversion of nitrile monomers to functional polymers is mostly limited due to their inert reactivity, and developing efficient polymerizations based on nitrile monomers under very mild conditions is still a big challenge. In this work, a facile and powerful base-catalyzed acetonitrile-azide click polymerization was successfully established under ambient conditions. This polymerization also enjoys the merits of short reaction time (15 min), 100% atom economy, transition-metal-free catalyst system, and regioselectivity. A series of poly(5-amino-1,2,3-triazole)s (PATAs) with high weight-average molecular weights (Mw, up to 204,000) were produced in excellent yields (up to 99%). The PATAs containing tetraphenylethene (TPE) moieties exhibit unique aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics, which could be used to sensitively detect Fe(III) ions with a low limit of detection (1.205 × 10-7 M) and to specifically image lysosomes of living cells. Notably, PATAs could be facilely post-modified due to their containing primary amino groups in the polymer chains even through a one-pot tandem reaction. Thus, this work not only establishes a new powerful click polymerization to convert stable nitriles but also generates a series of PATAs with versatile properties for diverse applications.

One-pot multicomponent polymerization towards heterocyclic polymers: a mini review

Multicomponent polymerization (MCP) is an innovative field related to polymer-based chemistry that offers numerous advantages derived from multicomponent reactions (MCRs). One of the key advantages of MCP is its ability to achieve high efficiency. Additionally, MCP offers other advantages, including operational simplicity, mild reaction conditions, and atom economy. MCP is a versatile technique that is used for synthesizing a wide range of analogs from several classes of heterocyclic compounds. The ring structures of heterocyclic polymers give them different mechanical, photophysical, and electrical properties to other types of polymers. Because of their unique properties, heterocyclic polymers have been widely utilized in various significant applications. MCRs are a type of chemical reaction that can be used to synthesize a wide variety of compounds in a single pot, which allows researchers to quickly assemble libraries of compounds. The development of MCPs from MCRs has made it easier to access a library of polymers with tunable structures. However, MCPs related to alkynes or acetylene triple bonds have more potential. In this review study, we provide an overview of the synthesis of heteroatom-functional polymers and alkyne-based development or other reactions such as Cu-catalyzed, catalyst-free, MCCP, MCTPs, green monomers, A3 coupling reactions, Passerini reactions, and sequence- and controlled-multicomponent polymerization. The up-to-date progress provides a convenient and efficient kind of approach related to heteroatoms and MCP synthesis, and perspectives in terms of future directions are also discussed in the study.

Acid-base responsive multifunctional poly(formyl sulfide)s through a facile catalyst-free click polymerization of aldehyde-activated internal diynes and dithiols

Acid-base equilibria play a critical role in biological processes and environmental systems. The development of innovative fluorescent polymeric materials to monitor acid-base equilibria is highly desirable. Herein, a novel catalyst-free click polymerization of aldehyde-activated internal diynes and dithiols was established, and exclusively Markovnikov poly(formyl sulfide)s (PFSs) with high molecular weights and moderate stereoregularity were produced in high yields. Because of the aromatic units and sulfur atoms in their main chains, these polymers possessed high refractive index values. By introducing the fluorene and aldehyde moieties, the resulting PFSs could act as a fluorescent sensor for sensitive hydrazine detection. Taking advantage of the reaction of the aldehyde group and hydrazine, imino-PFSs with remarkable and reversible fluorescence change through alternating fumigation with HCl and NH3 were easily acquired and further applied in multicolor patterning, a rewritable material and quadruple-mode information encryption. Additionally, a test strip of protonated imino-polymer for the tracking of bioamines in situ generated from marine product spoilage was also demonstrated. Collectively, this work not only provides a powerful click polymerization to enrich the multiplicity of sulfur-containing materials, but also opens up enormous opportunities for these functional polysulfides in diverse applications.

The Polymers of Diethynylarenes-Is Selective Polymerization at One Acetylene Bond Possible? A Review

In this review, all available publications on the polymerization of all isomers of bifunctional diethynylarenes due to the opening of C≡C bonds were considered and analyzed. It has been shown that with the use of polymers of diethynylbenzene, heat-resistant and ablative materials, catalysts, sorbents, humidity sensors, and other materials can be obtained. Various catalytic systems and conditions of polymer synthesis are considered. For the convenience of comparison, the publications considered are grouped according to common features, including the types of initiating systems. Critical consideration is given to the features of the intramolecular structure of the synthesized polymers since it determines the entire complex of properties of this material and subsequent materials. Branched and/or insoluble polymers are formed as a result of solid-phase and liquid-phase homopolymerization. It is shown that the synthesis of a completely linear polymer was carried out for the first time by anionic polymerization. The review considers in sufficient detail publications from hard-to-reach sources, as well as publications that required a more thorough critical examination. The review does not consider the polymerization of diethynylarenes with substituted aromatic rings because of their steric restrictions; the diethynylarenes copolymers with complex intramolecular structure; and diethynylarenes polymers obtained by oxidative polycondensation.

Alkyne Polymers from Stable Butatriene Homologues: Controlled Radical Polymerization of Vinylidenecyclopropanes

Controlled polymerization of cumulenic monomers represents a promising yet underdeveloped strategy toward well-defined alkyne polymers. Here we report a stereoelectronic effect-inspired approach using simple vinylidenecyclopropanes (VDCPs) as butatriene homologues in controlled radical ring-opening polymerizations. While being thermally stable, VDCPs mimic butatrienes via conjugation of the cyclopropane ring. This leads to exclusive terminal-selective propagation that affords a highly structurally regular alkyne-based backbone, featuring complete ring-opening and no backbiting regardless of polymerization conditions.

Kinetic Study of the Effective Thermal Polymerization of a Prebiotic Monomer: Aminomalononitrile

Aminomalononitrile (AMN), the HCN formal trimer, is a molecule of interest in prebiotic chemistry, in fine organic synthesis, and, currently, in materials science, mainly for bio-applications. Herein, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements by means of non-isothermal experiments of the stable AMN p-toluenesulfonate salt (AMNS) showed successful bulk AMN polymerization. The results indicated that this thermally stimulated polymerization is initiated at relatively low temperatures, and an autocatalytic kinetic model can be used to appropriately describe, determining the kinetic triplet, including the activation energy, the pre-exponential factor, and the mechanism function (E_α, A and f(α)). A preliminary structural characterization, by means of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, supported the effective generation of HCN-derived polymers prepared from AMNS. This study demonstrated the autocatalytic, highly efficient, and straightforward character of AMN polymerization, and to the best of our knowledge, it describes, for the first time, a systematic and extended kinetic analysis for gaining mechanistic insights into this process. The latter was accomplished through the help of simultaneous thermogravimetry (TG)-DSC and the in situ mass spectrometry (MS) technique for investigating the gas products generated during these polymerizations. These analyses revealed that dehydrocyanation and deamination processes must be important elimination reactions involved in the complex AMN polymerization mechanism.

Autonomous Visualization of Damage in Polymers by Metal-Free Polymerizations of Microencapsulated Activated Alkynes

The development of autonomous materials with desired performance and built-in visualizable sensing units is of great academic and industrial significance. Although a wide range of damage indication methods have been reported, the "turn-on" sensing mechanism by damaging events based on microcapsule systems, especially those relying on chemical reactions to elicit a chromogenic response, are still very limited. Herein, a facile and metal-free polymerization route with an interesting reaction-induced coloration effect is demonstrated. Under the catalysis of 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO), the polymerizations of difunctional or trifunctional activated alkynes proceed very quickly at 0 °C in air. A series of polymers composed of stereoregular enyne structure (major unit) and divinyl ether structure (minor unit) are obtained. Both the catalyst and monomers are colorless while the polymerized products are deep-colored. This process can be applied for the damage visualization of polymers using the microencapsulation technique. Microcapsules containing the reactive alkyne monomer are prepared and mixed in a DABCO-dispersed polymer film. Both the external and internal damage regions of this composite film can be readily visualized once the reaction is initiated from the ruptured microcapsules. Moreover, the newly formed polymer automatically seals the cracks with an additional protection function.

Anionic Polymerization of Para-Diethynylbenzene: Synthesis of a Strictly Linear Polymer

Anionic homo- and copolymerization of p-diethynylbenzene in the presence of n-BuLi in polar solvents was carried out. The use of hexamethylphosphortriamide (HMPA) makes it possible to synthesize a completely linear soluble polymer that does not have branching and phenylene fragments. A copolymer of p-diethynylbenzene with diphenyldiacetylene was synthesized. Homo- and copolymers of p-diethynylbenzene have high thermo- and thermo-oxidative stability. By the interaction of side reactive ethynylphenylene groups with various reagents, it is proposed to synthesize clusters along the conducting chain of poly-p-diethynylbenzene. Due to presenting C≡CH side groups, boron, copper, and cobalt derivatives were synthesized. It is shown that not all theoretically possible stereoisomers can be formed as a result of the polymerization. The application of p-diethynylbenzene polymers for the modification of industrial samples of epoxy novolac resin, oligoester acrylates, and carbon fibers has been demonstrated.

In Situ Generation of Heterocyclic Polymers by Triple-Bond Based Polymerizations

Stemming from unique ring structures, heterocyclic polymers exhibit distinguished electrical, mechanical, and photophysical properties and have been widely used in a variety of important applications. Along with the technological significance are the challenges in their synthesis. Traditional synthetic strategies toward heterocyclic polymers often require the direct attachment of heterocycles to polymer backbones, which are generally limited by the lack of suitable and low-cost heterocyclic monomers, tedious reaction process, difficulties in incorporation of multiple substitutents, etc. Alternatively, in situ construction of heterocyclic polymers via triple-bond based polymerization offers promising prospects. This review summarized the recent progress on polymerizations of triple-bond based monomers including alkynes, nitriles, and isonitriles that can in situ generate heterocyclic polymers. The properties and advanced applications of the derived heterocyclic polymers will also be discussed. Finally, the future perspectives and challenges in this field will be addressed.

A Comprehensive Review of HCN-Derived Polymers

HCN-derived polymers are a heterogeneous group of complex substances synthesized from pure HCN; from its salts; from its oligomers, specifically its trimer and tetramer, amino-nalono-nitrile (AMN) and diamino-maleo-nitrile (DAMN), respectively; or from its hydrolysis products, such as formamide, under a wide range of experimental conditions. The characteristics and properties of HCN-derived polymers depend directly on the synthetic conditions used for their production and, by extension, their potential applications. These puzzling systems have been known mainly in the fields of prebiotic chemistry and in studies on the origins of life and astrobiology since the first prebiotic production of adenine by Oró in the early years of the 1960s. However, the first reference regarding their possible role in prebiotic chemistry was mentioned in the 19th century by Pflüger. Currently, HCN-derived polymers are considered keys in the formation of the first and primeval protometabolic and informational systems, and they may be among the most readily formed organic macromolecules in the solar system. In addition, HCN-derived polymers have attracted a growing interest in materials science due to their potential biomedical applications as coatings and adhesives; they have also been proposed as valuable models for multifunctional materials with emergent properties such as semi-conductivity, ferroelectricity, catalysis and photocatalysis, and heterogeneous organo-synthesis. However, the real structures and the formation pathways of these fascinating substances have not yet been fully elucidated; several models based on either computational approaches or spectroscopic and analytical techniques have endeavored to shed light on their complete nature. In this review, a comprehensive perspective of HCN-derived polymers is presented, taking into account all the aspects indicated above.

Cu-Catalyzed four-component polymerization of alkynes, sulfonyl azides, nucleophiles and electrophiles

A four-component polymerization method was reported using diynes, sulfonyl azides, diols, and a variety of electrophiles. Such a strategy facilitated the facile preparation of a series of α-functionalized poly(N-sulfonylimidates)s.

Functional Isocyanide-Based Polymers

Research interest in the isocyanide-based reaction can be traced back to 1921 when the Passerini reaction was first reported. However, most of these research efforts did not lead to important progress in the synthesis of isocyanide-based polymers (IBPs). The major challenge resides in the lack of highly efficient polymerization methods, which limits large-scale preparation and applications. Modern organic chemistry provides efficient access to develop functional IBPs on the basis of isocyanide chemistry. However, it is still challenging to prepare the IBPs with small molecular isocyanide reaction. Our investigations into catalyst exploration and polymerization methodology have prompted the synthesis of a series of IBPs. Two classes of isocyanide monomers can be used for the construction of IBPs. The first class includes monomers with a single isocyanide. Novel catalysts for the synthetic chemistry of isocyanide allow the introduction of functional pendants into the linear polymer chains. This molecular functionalization endows the polymers with an array of new functional properties. For example, the incorporation of a chromophore on the polymeric side chain provides novel functional properties, such as aggregation-induced emission and optical activity. Diisocyanide monomers can be also utilized for the construction of heterocyclic, spiro-heterocyclic, and bispiro-heterocyclic polymers in the polymeric backbones. A new concept of "multi-component spiropolymerization" has been developed for the preparation of spiropolymers using the catalysis-free one-pot reaction. Proper structural design allows for the preparation of a heterocyclic polymeric chain with natural bioactivity and biological compatibility, generating new IBPs with biofunctionalities.In this Account, we discuss progress mainly made in our lab and related fields for the design of isocyanide monomers, exploration of new catalysts, and optimization of reaction conditions. The subsequent section discusses the characteristic properties and applications of selected examples of these functional polymers, mainly focusing on their optical applications. We have investigated the UV-sensitive IBPs that could potentially be used for lithography applications. One-pot highly efficient polymerization of diisocyanides and CO₂ under mild conditions can provide a new method for realizing the reuse of CO₂ and reducing the greenhouse effect. Through a combination of structural modifications, IBPs bearing dimethylbenzene moieties exhibit characteristics of black materials that can be potentially utilized as pyroelectric sensors, thermal detectors, and optical instruments. Most recently, our group synthesized a spiro-heterocyclic IBP with clusterization-triggered emission properties that can be used to discriminate cancer cells from normal cells and provides a new method for the treatment of cancer. The studies reviewed in this Account suggest that polymerization with isocyanide chemistry can be implemented in diverse functional macromolecules and materials.

Catalyst-Free Multicomponent Cyclopolymerizations of Diisocyanides, Activated Alkynes, and 1,4-Dibromo-2,3-Butanedione: a Facile Strategy toward Functional Polyiminofurans Containing Bromomethyl Groups

Polymers containing iminofuran (PIFs) are rarely reported due to the lack of simple and effective synthesis methods. In this work, a novel multicomponent cyclopolymerization (MCCP) of diisocyanides, activated alkynes, and 1,4-dibromo-2,3-butanedione using catalyst-free one-pot reactions under mild conditions to prepare PIFs containing bromomethyl groups is reported. PIFs with good solubility and thermal stability are obtained with high M_w s (up to 19 600) and good yields (up to 89.5%) under optimized polymerization conditions. The structure of the PIFs is characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and gel permeation chromatography. The photophysical properties indicate that polymers P1a2b3 and P1c2b3 have cluster-triggered emission characteristics. Thin films made from PIFs quickly degrade under UV irradiation. Moreover, the obtained polymers are decorated with bromomethyl and carboxylate groups in the side chain, which can be postfunctionalized to prepare multifunctional materials, such as star branched polymers and biomedical carrier materials. Thus, this work not only enriches the field of polymerization based on isocyanates and activated alkynes but also provides a facile strategy toward functional iminofuran polymers.

Addition of alkynes and osmium carbynes towards functionalized dπ-pπ conjugated systems

The metal-carbon triple bonds and carbon-carbon triple bonds are both highly unsaturated bonds. As a result, their reactions tend to afford cycloaddition intermediates or products. Herein, we report a reaction of M≡C and C≡C bonds that affords acyclic addition products. These newly discovered reactions are highly efficient, regio- and stereospecific, with good functional group tolerance, and are robust under air at room temperature. The isotope labeling NMR experiments and theoretical calculations reveal the reaction mechanism. Employing these reactions, functionalized dπ-pπ conjugated systems can be easily constructed and modified. The resulting dπ-pπ conjugated systems were found to be good electron transport layer materials in organic solar cells, with power conversion efficiency up to 16.28% based on the PM6: Y6 non-fullerene system. This work provides a facile, efficient methodology for the preparation of dπ-pπ conjugated systems for use in functional materials.

Structural and process controls of AIEgens for NIR-II theranostics

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is a cutting-edge fluorescence technology, giving highly-efficient solid-state photoluminescence. Particularly, AIE luminogens (AIEgens) with emission in the range of second near-infrared window (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) have displayed salient advantages for biomedical imaging and therapy. However, the molecular design strategy and underlying mechanism for regulating the balance between fluorescence (radiative pathway) and photothermal effect (non-radiative pathway) in these narrow bandgap materials remain obscure. In this review, we outline the latest achievements in the molecular guidelines and photophysical process control for developing highly efficient NIR-II emitters or photothermal agents with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) attributes. We provide insights to optimize fluorescence efficiency by regulating multi-hierarchical structures from single molecules (flexibilization) to molecular aggregates (rigidification). We also discuss the crucial role of intramolecular motions in molecular aggregates for balancing the functions of fluorescence imaging and photothermal therapy. The superiority of the NIR-II region is demonstrated by fluorescence/photoacoustic imaging of blood vessels and the brain as well as photothermal ablation of the tumor. Finally, a summary of the challenges and perspectives of NIR-II AIEgens for in vivo theranostics is given.

Isocyanoacetate-Aldehyde Polymerization: A Facile Tool toward Functional Oxazoline-Containing Polymers

As an important nitrogen source, isocyanides have been involved in numerous organic reactions. As a result, many complicated compounds have been successfully synthesized through isocyanide chemistry. However, compared with its popular research in organic reactions, the application of isocyanides in polymerization is less investigated. In this work, a new polymerization based on isocyanide monomers is established. By simply mixing diisocyanoacetates and dialdehydes in the presence of a catalytic system of CuCl/PPh₃ /organobase in dichloromethane at room temperature readily produces soluble and thermally stable oxazoline-containing polymers with moderate weight-averaged molecular weights (M_w up to 11 200) in excellent yields (up to 97%) after 6 h. Furthermore, introducing the tetraphenylethene moiety into the main chains endows the resultant polymers with aggregation-induced emission, which can function as fluorescent probes for Fe³⁺ ion detection with high sensitivity and selectivity. This work not only enriches the family of isocyanide-based polymerizations but also provides an efficient tool for the preparation of functional heterocycle-containing polymers.

Preparation, Characterization of Propargyl Terminal Polybutadiene and Its Crosslinked Elastomers Properties

Propargyl terminal Polybutadiene (PTPB) was successfully prepared through hydroxyl terminal polybutadiene (HTPB) end-capping modification. The FTIR and ¹³C NMR results indicated that the HTPB terminal hydroxyl was thoroughly replaced and yielded the target product, PTPB, with a theoretical propargyl content of 0.66 mmol g⁻¹. In comparison with HTPB, PTPB has a lower viscosity. Using 1,6-diazide hexane as a curing agent, polytriazole crosslinked polybutadiene (PT_riPB) elastomers with various functional molar ratios (R) were prepared by CuAAC reaction, and the glass transition temperatures of the resultant PT_riPB elastomers were approximately −75 °C, measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), nearly independent of elastomer R values. Mechanical tests indicated, that with the increase in R, the mechanical properties of PT_riPB elastomers exhibit a parabolic dependence on R. In addition, the thermal stability of PT_riPB elastomers were also studied. The findings revealed some fundamental features of polytriazole crosslinking elastomer prepared by CuAAC reaction.

Palladium/Benzoic Acid-Catalyzed Regio- and Stereoselective Polymerization of Internal Diynes and Diols through C(sp3)-H Activation

The C-H activation has been a hot research area in organic chemistry, and the most difficult one is the C(sp³)-H activation. Although the C-H activation has been introduced to the research of synthetic polymer chemistry, the polymerization developed based on C(sp³)-H activation is rarely reported, which will enrich the tools for the preparation of functional polymers. In this work, palladium/benzoic acid catalyzed polymerization of internal diynes and diols through C(sp³)-H activation was successfully established. Regio- and stereoregular functional poly(allylic ether)s with 100% E-isomers and high weight average molecular weights (M_w up to 33200) were prepared in excellent yield (98%). The reaction mechanism was unveiled with the assistance of density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, the thin films of polymers display high refractive indices and low optical dispersions. The polymer containing tetraphenylethene moiety displays the aggregation-enhanced emission feature and could be used to generate 2D fluorescent photopattern. Thus, this work not only establishes a powerful polymerization based on C(sp³)-H activation, but also furnishes functional polymers for diverse applications.

A Simple Approach to Bioconjugation at Diverse Levels: Metal-Free Click Reactions of Activated Alkynes with Native Groups of Biotargets without Prefunctionalization

The efficient bioconjugation of functional groups/molecules to targeted matrix and bio-related species drives the great development of material science and biomedicine, while the dilemma of metal catalysis, uneasy premodification, and limited reaction efficiency in traditional bioconjugation has restricted the booming development to some extent. Here, we provide a strategy for metal-free click bioconjugation at diverse levels based on activated alkynes. As a proof-of-concept, the abundant native groups including amine, thiol, and hydroxyl groups can directly react with activated alkynes without any modification in the absence of metal catalysis. Through this strategy, high-efficient modification and potential functionalization can be achieved for natural polysaccharide, biocompatible polyethylene glycol (PEG), synthetic polymers, cell penetrating peptide, protein, fast whole-cell mapping, and even quick differentiation and staining of Gram-positive bacteria, etc. Therefore, current metal-free click bioconjugation strategy based on activated alkynes is promising for the development of quick fluorescence labeling and functional modification of many targets and can be widely applied towards the fabrication of complex biomaterials and future in vivo labeling and detection.
