Water sorption and water solubility of self-etching and self-adhesive resin cements

Effect of curing mode of resin composite cements on water sorption, color stability, and biaxial flexural strength

OBJECTIVES

To determine whether water sorption and solubility of a recently introduced self-adhesive cement is comparable to two clinically tested resin composite cements after thermal aging, and if this is affected by the curing mode. Whether water sorption is correlated with color difference and biaxial flexural strength was also investigated.

METHODS

Water sorption and solubility of three resin composite cements {RelyX Universal (RUV), (Panavia V5 (PV5), Panavia SA plus (PSA)} were measured after thermal aging. Disk-shaped specimens were either light-cured or autopolymerized (n = 15 per group). Color difference ΔE00 and biaxial flexural strength were also obtained.

RESULTS

Sorption was highest for RUV (auto: 54.9 ± 9.0 µg/mm3, light: 49.7 ± 4.9 µg/mm3), followed by PSA (auto: 37.7 ± 1.4 µg/mm3, light: 34.5 ± 1.1 µg/mm3) and PV5 (auto: 21.7 ± 0.7 µg/mm3, light: 22.1 ± 0.4 µg/mm3). Light-curing reduced solubility values, particularly for RUV (from 60.7 ± 20.8 µg/mm3 to 6.4 ± 0.8 µg/mm3). Color differences of ΔE00 > 1.8 (considered clinically not acceptable) were noted after aging for RUV and PSA. Sorption and ΔE00 values after aging were correlated linearly (R2 = 0.970). Biaxial flexural strength values were highest for PV5 (light: 153.4 ± 15.9 MPa; auto: 133.2 ± 18.0 MPa) and lowest for RUV (light: 99.3 ± 12.8 MPa; auto: 35.1 ± 8.3 MPa).

SIGNIFICANCE

Light-curing has beneficial effects on sorption, color stability, and biaxial flexural strength of resin composite cements. Cements containing 2-hydroxymethacrylate such as RUV and PSA are more prone to water sorption and color changes.

Residual stresses in glass crowns generated by polymerization and water sorption of resin cements

This study investigated residual stresses in glass crowns cemented with resin cements. Glass caps were cemented to cylindrical cores using a conventional resin composite cement, a self-adhesive resin cement, or a methyl methacrylate (MMA)-based cement in dual-cure or self-cure mode. The cemented caps were stored in 37°C water for 28 days, and stresses on the cap surface were repeatedly measured. The water sorption, water solubility, and elastic modulus of the cements were also measured. Polymerization of the cements initially generated compressive stresses on the surfaces. Dual-curing or a greater modulus yielded greater initial stress. The stresses gradually decreased over time and lingered on the surfaces at 28 days with all the cements. Greater sorption tended to lead to greater stress reduction; however, the MMA-based cement exhibited less stress reduction despite exhibiting the greatest sorption. The use of a resin composite cement or dual-curing is recommended to reinforce crown restorations.

Influence of Specimen Dimension, Water Immersion Protocol, and Surface Roughness on Water Sorption and Solubility of Resin-Based Restorative Materials

The evaluation of water sorption and solubility is pivotal for the development of new resin-based restorative materials with the potential for clinical application. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the influence of the specimen dimension, water immersion protocol, and surface roughness on the water sorption and solubility of three resin-based restorative materials. Disk-shaped specimens of 15 mm × 1 mm, 10 mm × 1 mm, and 6 mm × 1 mm were produced with a composite resin (Z100), a resin cement (RelyX ARC), and an adhesive system (Single Bond 2-SB2). The specimens were immersed in distilled water according to four protocols: ISO (all the specimens for each group were vertically immersed in 50 mL); IV-10 (the specimens were individually and vertically immersed in 10 mL); IH-10 (the specimens were individually and horizontally immersed in 10 mL); and IH-2 (the specimens were individually and horizontally immersed in 2 mL). The surface roughness (Sa and Sp) was evaluated using an atomic force microscope, and the degree of conversion was determined using FT-IR spectrometry. The specimen dimension and water immersion protocol had no effect on water sorption and solubility. For the three resin-based restorative materials, Sp was higher than Sa. The degree of conversion was not influenced by the specimen dimension. The variations in the specimen dimension and water immersion protocol compared to those determined by ISO 4049 did not prevent the comparison between the values of water sorption and solubility obtained for a given resin-based restorative material.

Water-Induced Changes in Experimental Resin Composites Functionalized with Conventional (45S5) and Customized Bioactive Glass

The aim of the study was to evaluate microhardness, mass changes during 1-year water immersion, water sorption/solubility, and calcium phosphate precipitation of experimental composites functionalized with 5-40 wt% of two types of bioactive glass (BG): 45S5 or a customized low-sodium fluoride-containing formulation. Vickers microhardness was evaluated after simulated aging (water storage and thermocycling), water sorption and solubility were tested according to ISO 4049, and calcium phosphate precipitation was studied by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. For the composites containing BG 45S5, a significant reduction in microhardness was observed with increasing BG amount. In contrast, 5 wt% of the customized BG resulted in statistically similar microhardness to the control material, while higher BG amounts (20 and 40 wt%) resulted in a significant improvement in microhardness. Water sorption was more pronounced for composites containing BG 45S5, increasing 7-fold compared to the control material, while the corresponding increase for the customized BG was only 2-fold. Solubility increased with higher amounts of BG, with an abrupt increase at 20 and 40 wt% of BG 45S5. Calcium phosphate was precipitated by all composites with BG amounts of 10 wt% or more. The improved properties of the composites functionalized with the customized BG indicate better mechanical, chemical, and dimensional stability without compromising the potential for calcium phosphate precipitation.

Novel antibacterial and apatite forming restorative composite resin incorporated with hydrated calcium silicate

Background

White Portland cement is a calcium silicate material. It exhibits antibacterial properties and is biocompatible. In addition, calcium silicate-based materials are known to release calcium ions and form apatite. The purpose of this study was to develop a novel bioactive restorative resin composite with antibacterial and apatite forming properties to prevent tooth caries at the interface of teeth and restorative materials, by incorporation of hydrated calcium silicate (hCS) derived from white Portland cement.

Methods

To prepare the experimental composite resins, a 30 wt% light-curable resin matrix and 70 wt% filler, which was mixed with hCS and silanized glass powder were prepared in following concentrations: 0, 17.5, 35.0, and 52.5 wt% hCS filler. The depth of cure, flexural strength, water sorption, solubility, and antibacterial effect were tested. After immersion in artificial saliva solution for 15, 30, 60, and 90 days, ion concentration by ICP-MS and apatite formation using SEM-EDS, Raman spectroscopy and XRD from experimental specimens were analyzed.

Results

All experimental groups showed clinically acceptable depths of cure and flexural strength for the use as the restorative composite resin. Water sorption, solubility, released Ca and Si ions increased with the addition of hCS to the experimental composite resin. Experimental groups containing hCS showed greater antibacterial effects compared with the 0 wt% hCS filler group (p < 0.05). The 52.5 wt% hCS filler group produced precipitates mainly composed of Ca and P detected as hydroxyapatite after immersion in artificial saliva solution for 30, 60, and 90 days.

Conclusions

This results show that composite resins containing hCS filler is effective in antibacterial effects. hCS has also apatite formation ability for reducing gap size of microleakage by accumulating hydroxyapatite precipitates at the restoration-tooth interface. Therefore, novel composite resin containing hCS is promising bioactive resin because of its clinically acceptable physiochemical properties, antibacterial properties, and self-sealing potential for prevention of microleakage for longer usage of restorations.

Effect of silane coupling agent and concentration on fracture toughness and water sorption behaviour of fibre-reinforced dental composites

OBJECTIVES

This paper presents the effect of silane treatment of S-2 Glass fibres on the fracture toughness and water sorption/solubility behaviour of fibre-reinforced flowable dental composites. The effect of epoxy- and methacrylate-based silane coupling agents (SCAs) on the mechanical strength and hydrolytic properties were investigated. The concentration of the selected SCAs on the mechanical and physical properties were investigated. The influence of molecular structure and concentration in the interfacial adhesion at the fibre-matrix interfaces was also studied.

METHODS

Short S-2 Glass fibres of 250 µm in length and 5 µm in diameter were etched with acid to remove any impurities and roughen the surface. The acid-etched fibres were silane treated with 3MPS, 3GPS, and 8MOTS at different concentrations by weight (%). The silane-treated fibres were incorporated at 5 % into the dental resin mixture. Untreated fibres were added at 5 % to the dental resin mixture and served as the control group. The physical properties such as water sorption, solubility, and desorption along with mechanical properties such as fracture toughness and total fracture work of the fibre-reinforced dental composites grafted with the above-mentioned SCAs were evaluated. The surface morphology of the fractured surface was studied and analysed.

RESULTS

The fracture toughness tests showed that the dental composites grafted with optimum weight per cent (wt. %) concentration of the SCA had a better stress intensity factor (K_IC) when compared to the 2.0 wt. % and 3.0 wt. % concentration. The K_IC value of dental composites grafted with untreated surface etched glass fibres was less than the K_IC values of dental composites grafted with optimum concentrations of 3MPS, 3GPS, and 8MOTS by 81.6 %, 38.6 %, and 110.5 %, respectively. A similar trend was found while investigating the total work of fracture of the dental composites, between optimum concentration, 2.0 wt. % and 3.0 wt. % concentration of respective SCA. The increase in silane concentration also led to an increase in the water sorption/solubility characteristics. The absorption of water was most severe in the fibre-reinforced dental composites without silane treatment (32.9 µg/mm³). The ANOVA results showed that the fibre-reinforced dental composites grafted with 8MOTS at optimum concentration showed an increase in fracture toughness when compared to optimum concentrations of 3GPS and 3MPS by 51.9 % and 15.9 %, respectively. The enhanced mechanical and physical characteristics are due to the increased adhesion between the fibre and silane achieved from the optimum wt. % concentration of 8MOTS. Similarly, dental composites grafted with 8MOTS at optimum concentration showed a decrease in water sorption characteristics when compared to optimum concentrations of 3GPS and 3MPS by 18.2 % and 0.6 %, respectively. The decreased water sorption characteristics at the optimum concentration of 8MOTS could be due to the reduced availability of reactive hydroxyl groups and the hydrophobic characteristics of 8MOTS.

SIGNIFICANCE

Silane coupling agents (SCAs) are important components of dental composites. The type and concentration of SCA have a significant effect on material properties. The current study focuses on understanding the effects of different SCAs and wt. % concentrations on the interfacial fracture behaviour and the influence of different SCAs on the water sorption and solubility behaviour of S-2 Glass fibre-reinforced flowable dental composites.

Color Stability of Resin Cements after Water Aging

The color stability of resin cements plays a key role in the achievement of esthetically-pleasant restorations. Resin luting materials can be mainly divided into two main classes: adhesive (relying on previous application of adhesive systems) or self-adhesive (also known as one-step cements). The different chemical compositions determine their physio-mechanical characteristics which, in turns, influence their color stability. To evaluate the color variations of different dual-cured resin cements after water aging, 80 disc-shaped specimens (15 mm in diameter and 1.2 mm thick) were obtained from the following resin cements (n = 10): (1) Maxcem Elite Universal, MCU (Kerr); (2) RelyX Universal, RXU (3M); (3) Calibra Ceram, CAL (Dentsply); (4) Multilink, MUL (Ivoclar-Vivadent); (5) Panavia V5, PAN (Kuraray); (6) Calibra Universal, CUN (Dentsply); (7) SpeedCEM Plus, SCP (Ivoclar); and (8) Panavia SA, PSA (Kuraray). After light-polymerization, the specimens were measured with a spectrophotometer and CIELab* values were recorded. The specimens were then placed in a digitally controlled thermostatic water bath at 60° for 30 days and afterwards the color measurements were repeated. Color differences were calculated for each specimen before and after water-aging procedures with ΔEab formula and the data were statistically analyzed (p < 0.05). The type of cement statistically influenced the ΔEab (p < 0.05), with MCU showing the lowest color variations (4.3 ± 0.7) whereas RXU and PSA the highest (16.9 ± 1.6 and 16.8 ± 1.2, respectively). No differences were observed between CAL, CUN and SCP (p = 0.05). Color stability is related to the chemical composition of the resinous luting materials, thus material dependent.

Physical, Mechanical, and Adhesive Properties of Novel Self-Adhesive Resin Cement

Objective

To evaluate a newly developed self-adhesive resin cement on physical, mechanical, and adhesive properties and compare it with other commercial self-adhesive resin cements.

Materials and Methods

Experimental self-adhesive resin cement (SARC) was formulated by our proprietary adhesive resin and filler technology. Maxcem Elite, RelyX Unicem 2, SpeedCem Plus, SmartCEM 2, and Calibra Universal 2 were selected for comparison. Working and setting times, film thickness, water sorption and solubility, flexural strength, and modulus were measured in accordance with ISO-4049. Consistency was tested according to modified ISO 4823. Shear bond strengths were conducted according to ISO 29022. The data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey's tests (p ≤ 0.05).

Results

All cements showed about 2–4 min working time and about 3–6 min setting time except that RelyX Unicem 2 has a longer working time (9'58”) and setting time (10'18”). All cements meet ISO standards for film thickness (≤50 µm), water sorption (≤40 µg/mm³) except Maxcem Elite (46.19 µg/mm³), and water solubility (≤7.5 µg/mm³) except SmartCEM 2 (11.35 µg/mm³) and Calibra Universal (9.87 µg/mm³). Experimental SARC showed significantly higher flexural strength and modulus than other cements (p < 0.001). For self-curing, Experimental SARC has statistically higher bond strength than other cements (p < 0.001) except statistically the same as RelyX Unicem 2 (p > 0.05). For light-curing, Experimental SARC showed significantly higher bond strength than other cements (p < 0.001) except statistically the same as Maxcem Elite and RelyX Unicem 2 (p > 0.05). For dual-curing, the bond strength of Experimental SARC is significantly higher than that of other cements (p < 0.001).

Conclusion

The newly developed self-adhesive resin cement exhibited favorable bonding capability and physical and mechanical properties compared to other commercial self-adhesive resin cements and is a good option for cementation of indirect restorations with potential long-term clinical success.

Development of New Experimental Dental Enamel Resin Infiltrants-Synthesis and Characterization

The aim of the present study was to obtain experimental infiltration materials, intended for the treatment of dental white spots, and to investigate them. Two series of infiltrants (P1–P6)/(P1F–P6F) were obtained, based on different monomer mixtures, without/with glass filler (with fluoride release ability). Each infiltrant from the second series contained the same amount of glass powder, and each infiltrant from the (P–PF) group contained the same resin composition. The characteristics of the experimental infiltrants were investigated by degree of conversion (DC), mechanical strength, water sorption (WS), and fluoride release, in addition to residual monomer for (P1F–P6F) infiltrants. The results were compared with those obtained for commercial Icon infiltrant. For the experimental infiltrants, without/with filler, the recorded DC was in the range of 58.27–89.70%/60.62–89.99%, compared with Icon (46.94%) 24 h after polymerization. The release of fluoride depends on the permeability of the polymer matrix, with respect to the water sorption, which may help to diffuse ions in the storage medium but which can also influence the release of residual monomers. The highest flexural strengths were recorded for the (TEGDMA/HEMA/Bis-GMA) infiltrants (133.94 ± 16.389 MPa/146.31 ± 7.032 MPa). The best experimental infiltrants were P2 and P2F (Bis-GMA/HEMA/TEGDMA).

In-vitro cytocompatibility of self-adhesive dual-curing resin cements on human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC) and periodontal ligament cells (PDL-hTERT)

OBJECTIVES

Self-adhesive dual cured resin cements provide easier clinical application than conventional resin cements but release higher amounts of unreacted monomers, potentially affecting their biocompatibility. This study aimed to compare the cytotoxic effects of self-adhesive dual cured resin cements with two conventional resin cements.

METHODS

Samples of four resin cements, two self-adhesive dual cured cements (group A: RelyX Unicem, group B: SmartCem), and two conventional resin cements (group C: Panavia 2.0, group D: Variolink Esthetic DC) were prepared with a similar dimension under standardized polymerization conditions and stored in water. For each material 18 samples were used and cell cultures of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) or periodontal ligament cells (PDL-hTERT) were added under appropriate conditions. One experimental group (group E) was left untreated as control. A cell viability WST test, was performed in each experimental group at day 1, 7, 14 and 21. Moreover, microscopic examination of cells was performed using cell viability staining.

RESULTS

Viability of both cell types as determined by WST test was significantly impaired at all time periods by the four different cement materials compared to the untreated control. Comparison between the four materials revealed different inhibition of the viability of both, PDL-hTERT and hMSC cells (group C > group B > group A > group D; p < 0.0001).

SIGNIFICANCE

All resin-based cements caused significant impairment of cell viability, reflecting considerable cytotoxicity. Variolink caused significantly smaller changes of viability than the other tested materials.

Evaluation of the Water Sorption and Solubility Behavior of Different Polymeric Luting Materials

Objective: The study evaluated the water sorption (WSP) and water solubility (WSL) characteristics of different luting agents over a 180-day water storage period. Materials and Methods: Nine luting materials, i.e., conventional resin cement: Panavia F (PF), Rely X ARC (RA), self-adhesive resin cement: Rely X Unicem (RU), Breez (BZ), Maxcem Elite (MX), BisCem (BC) and resin-modified glass ionomer cement: FujiCem (FC), FujiPlus (FP) Rely X luting plus (RL) were assessed and fifty-two-disc specimens of each material were fabricated. All specimens were desiccated until a constant weight (W0) was reached. Thirteen specimens for each luting material were then randomly assigned to one of the four water immersion periods (7, 30, 90, and 180 days). After each period, the specimens were removed from the water and weighed to get W1. The samples were again desiccated for a second time and W₂ was measured. Both WSP and WSL were determined by the following equations: WSP (%) = (W₁ − W₂) × 100/W₀ and WSL (%) = (W₀ − W₂) × 100/W₀. Assessments were performed following ISO standards. ANOVA was used to assess the effect of luting agent and time period on water sorption and solubility. Pair-wise comparisons were adjusted using Tukey’s multiple comparison procedure. A significance level of 0.05 was used for all statistical tests. Results: The highest mean WSP and WSL (WSP/WSL) were demonstrated by resin-modified glass-ionomers (RL 18.32/3.25, FC 17.08/4.83, and FP 14.14/1.99), while resin luting agents showed lower WSP and WSL results (PF 1.6/0.67 and RA 1.76/0.46), respectively. The self-adhesive agents exhibited a wide range of WSP and WSL values (RU 1.86/0.13, BZ 4.66/0.93, and MX 3.68/1.11). Self-adhesive cement showed lower WSP and WSL compared with the resin-modified glass-ionomers (p < 0.05). All the materials reached equilibrium after 90-days. Conclusions: Resin-based luting materials have the lowest sorption and solubility. Rely X Unicem self-adhesive luting materials were comparable to resin luting materials for WSL and WSP. Resin-modified glass-ionomer showed the highest water sorption and solubility compared with both resin and self-adhesive materials.

Changes of residual stresses on the surface of leucite-reinforced ceramic restoration luted with resin composite cements during aging in water

The objective of this study was to compare the changes in the residual stresses present on the surface of leucite-reinforced dental ceramic restorations luted with a self-adhesive and a conventional resin composite cement during aging in water. Ring specimens made of a leucite-reinforced ceramics were luted to ceramic cylinders using a self-adhesive (Panavia SA Luting Plus) or a conventional resin composite cement (Panavia V5) in dual-cure or self-cure mode. Residual stresses on the ring surface were measured using indentation fracture method at 1 h, 1, 3, 7, 14 and 28 days of the 37 °C water immersion. Water sorption, water solubility and elastic modulus of the cements were also measured. Compressive stress was generated on the surface of the ceramic rings by the polymerization of the resin composite cements, and the stresses appeared to decrease over time by water sorption of the cements. The dual-cured conventional resin composite cement remained compressive stresses on the ceramic surface, while only the self-cured self-adhesive cement, which demonstrated the greatest water sorption, generated tensile stresses during the four weeks of aging in water. The elastic moduli of cements did not significantly change through the immersion, suggesting that the stresses were less affected by the modulus. To prevent the generation of tensile stresses on the leucite-reinforced ceramic restoration, self-adhesive cements exhibiting small water sorption should be clinically selected.

Bonding Effectiveness of Contemporary Materials in Luting Glass-Ceramic to Dentine: An In Vitro Study

Aim:

To evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) of resin cements, flowable composites, and a preheated composite in luting glass-ceramic to dentin.

Materials and Methods:

In total, 108 noncaries human third molar teeth embedded in acrylic blocks, grinded from the occlusal surfaces until dentin was exposed, and divided into 9 randomized groups ( n = 12). In total, 108 ceramic samples prepared in disc shape (3mm × 3mm) from IPS e. max CAD (Ivoclar Vivadent) blocks. Four adhesive resin cements: Variolink Esthetic DC (Ivoclar Vivadent), G-CEM LinkForce (GC), Panavia V5 (Kuraray Noritake), Maxcem Elite Chroma (Kerr), and three flowable composites: G-ænial Universal Flo (GC), Herculite XRV Ultra Flow (Kerr), Vertise Flow (Kerr), and one preheated composite: Enamel Plus HRI (Micerium) luted to the prepared occlusal surfaces of the teeth with total-etch, self-etch, and self-adhesive protocols. Then samples were thermocyled (5,000 cycles, 5–55°C, dwell time 20 s). SBS test was performed in a universal testing machine (at 0.5 mm/min). Failure modes were examined under a stereomicroscope at ×25 magnification. Data were analyzed using Kruskal–Wallis and Dunn–Bonferroni tests ( α = 0.05).

Results:

There were statistically significant differences among material types ( P < .05). Highest SBS values found in G-ænial Universal Flo (15.43 ± 5.67), and the lowest values obtained in Maxcem Elite Choroma (SA) (1.25 ± 1.47). There were no significant differences between self-etch (Panavia V5, Maxcem Elite Choroma [SE]) and self-adhesive (Maxcem Elite Choroma [SA], Vertise Flow) protocols ( P > .05).

Conclusion:

Flowable composites can be alternatives to resin cements when bonded with total-etch procedures. Bond strength of self-etch and self-adhesive applications is still to be developed.

In Vitro Evaluation of Physical and Mechanical Properties of Light-Curing Resin Cement: A Comparative Study

OBJECTIVE

 The aim of study was to evaluate in vitro the surface hardness, sorption, solubility, and color stability of three light-cured resin cements, namely RelyX Veneer (RLX), Variolink Veneer (VLK), and All Cem Veneer (ACV).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

 Cylindrical samples (15 × 1 mm) were made for each group using a metallic mold (n = 10). Vickers microhardness test was performed, and average hardness was calculated from three indentations (300 gf/15s) per sample. The sorption and solubility of the materials were evaluated according to ISO 4049:2009 based on three samples weighing: initial (m ₁), after immersion in distilled water for 7 days (m ₂), and final (after removal of all moisture [m ₃]). The color change was observed using a digital spectrophotometer, at three different time points, baseline, 1 day, and 1 week of immersion in coffee and distilled water (control).

STATISTICAL ANALYSIS

 Shapiro-Wilk test was used to analyze the normality of the data, and groups were compared using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests. A significance level of 5% was used.

RESULTS

 RLX showed the highest microhardness mean values (36.96 VHN), but higher sorption (23.2 µg/mm³) and solubility (2.40 µg/mm³), with statistically significant differences with the other groups. For color stability, higher ∆E was observed for the samples immersed in coffee (p = 0.009). The VLK resin cement presented statistically significant differences from the other groups, with higher color changes in coffee at 1 day (15.14) and after 1 week (23.65).

CONCLUSION

 RLX resin cement showed better hardness results. All materials tested performed satisfactorily for sorption and solubility according to ISO 4049:2009. All materials showed high-staining values after 1 week of immersion in coffee.

Hydrolytic and Biological Degradation of Bulk-fill and Self-adhering Resin Composites

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to evaluate the hydrolytic degradation (in vitro) and biodegradation (in situ) of different resin composites: bulk-fill (XTra Fill, XTF/VOCO; Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fil, TBF/ Ivoclar Vivadent), self-adhering (Vertise Flow, VTF/ Kerr; Fusio Liquid Dentin, FUS/ Pentron Clinical), and a conventional resin composite (Filtek Z250, Z250/ 3M ESPE), which was used as a control.

METHODS AND MATERIALS

Seventy-five cylindrical specimens (7 × 1 mm) were desiccated and immersed into distilled water (DW), artificial saliva (AS), and 0.1 M lactic acid (LA) (n=5) for 180 days. Specimens were weighed after 180 days, after which they were desiccated again. The sorption (μg/mm³) and solubility (μg/mm³) were calculated based on ISO 4049. For the in situ phase, an intraoral palatal device containing five cylindrical specimens (5 × 1.5 mm) was used by 20 volunteers for seven days. Surface roughness was evaluated before and after this period to analyze the superficial biodegradation. Sorption and solubility data were submitted to Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to compare roughness at different observation times. The statistical significance for all tests was considered α=0.05.

RESULTS

For in vitro, self-adhering resin composites (VTF and FUS) showed, respectively, higher sorption values independent of the solution (62.55 and 50.81 μg/mm³ in DW, 67.26 and 50.46 μg/mm³ in AS, and 64.98 and 59.86 μg/mm³ in LA). Self-adhering VTF also had a greater solubility value in DW (22.18 μg/mm³) and FUS in LA (65.87 μg/mm³). In AS, the bulk-fill resin composite XTF showed higher solubility (22.13 μg/mm³). All resins were biodegraded, but the XTF specimens were more resistant (p=0.278) to chemical attack.

CONCLUSIONS

The self-adhering resin composites showed the highest hydrolytic degradation, and the bulk-fill resin composites exhibited comparable or superior results to the conventional resin composites. Not all resin composites underwent biodegradation in the in situ environment. The storage environment influenced the final characteristics of each material tested.

Effect of cementation, cement type and vent holes on fit of zirconia copings

Objectives

To investigate the effect of cementation, cement type and vent-holes on the marginal and internal fit of Zirconia (Zr) Copings.

Materials and methods

Extracted premolars (N = 100) were mounted in resin and prepared for Zr crowns. Samples were randomly divided into 5 groups (n = 20); A: No Cementation; B: Cementation with Glass-Ionomer (GI); C: GI + Vent-Holes; D: Cementation with Resin Cement (RC); E: RC + Vent-Holes. The copings were fabricated using semi sintered Zr Blocks with a standardized cement space of 20 µm. Groups C & E were designed to have 0.5 mm of Vent-Holes on the Buccal and Lingual Cusp Tips. The copings were tried, cemented, thermocycled, re-embedded in resin and cross sectioned into two halves. The copings were examined with 3D-Digital Microscope (HIROX, KH-7700, Tokyo, Japan) at 50-200X. The gaps were recorded at 9 predetermined points.

Results

The non-cemented groups showed statistically better fit compared to the cemented groups P < 0.05 except vs Group E (RC plus vent holes). No significance was found between the cemented groups P > 0.05. Copings with vent-holes showed statistically better fit than copings without holes P < 0.05.

Conclusion

Marginal and Internal gap values designed in the software programs differed than the actual values measured for the non-cemented copings. Cementation process also influenced the fit of the Zr copings, the resin cement being the more accurate. The addition of vent-holes on the occlusal surface improved the fit.

Cytotoxicity of Self-Adhesive Resin Cements on Human Periodontal Ligament Fibroblasts

The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential cytotoxicity of self-adhesive resin cements with or without light irradiation on human periodontal ligament fibroblasts (HPDLFs) in vitro. Three self-adhesive resin cements (RelyX U200, Maxcem Elite and Multilink Speed) were cured with light or not. Cured cements were stored at 37°C for 24 h in water or Dulbecco's modified eagle medium (DMEM) medium. Their chromatographic analysis of water-based extract solution was made and then the DMEM-based extract solution was diluted in complete DMEM {1:5, 1:10, 1:20, 1:40, 1:80 (v/v)} for evaluating cell relative growth rate and cell apoptosis/necrosis rate of HPDLFs. The data was analyzed by one-way ANOVA and independent T test. Regardless of light irradiation, cell relative growth rate increased, and the apoptosis/necrosis rate of each resin cement decreased with the increase of gradient dilution. Regardless of gradient dilution, the cell relative growth rate and apoptosis/necrosis rate of RelyX U200 and Maxcem Elite with light irradiation were higher than those without light irradiation. Besides, without light irradiation, Multilink Speed showed higher cell relative growth rate and lower apoptosis/necrosis rate than other cements. Light irradiation and composition difference of self-adhesive resin cements could affect their cytotoxicity on HPDLFs.

Evaluation of Radiopacity of Luting Cements Submitted to Different Aging Procedures

PURPOSE

To evaluate the radiopacity of luting cements submitted to different aging procedures.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Twenty discs (1 × 4 mm) of each of the following cements were prepared: zinc phosphate, RelyX Luting 2, Variolink 2, AllCem, RelyX U200, Multilink, Panavia F2.0, and RelyX ARC. Then, they were randomly divided into two groups (n = 10/group), according to the aging procedure: thermal cycling group and water storage group. Before and after aging procedures, specimens were x-rayed with an aluminum step-wedge (11 steps, 1 mm thick each) and three dental slices (1 mm thick). The radiopacity was evaluated by means of optical density, which was measured using ImageJ software. The values were converted into millimeters of aluminum with a logistic regression calibration curve. The data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc test (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

In the thermal cycling group, RelyX Luting 2, RelyX U200, and Panavia F2.0 showed a statistically significant reduction in radiopacity (p < 0.05). In the water storage group, all cements showed a significant reduction in radiopacity (p < 0.05), and RelyX Luting 2 and Panavia F2.0 performed below the desired ISO 4049 standard.

CONCLUSIONS

The radiopacity of luting cements can decrease after aging, especially after 1-year water storage.

Dental Resin Cements-The Influence of Water Sorption on Contraction Stress Changes and Hydroscopic Expansion

Resin matrix dental materials undergo contraction and expansion changes due to polymerization and water absorption. Both phenomena deform resin-dentin bonding and influence the stress state in restored tooth structure in two opposite directions. The study tested three composite resin cements (Cement-It, NX3, Variolink Esthetic DC), three adhesive resin cements (Estecem, Multilink Automix, Panavia 2.0), and seven self-adhesive resin cements (Breeze, Calibra Universal, MaxCem Elite Chroma, Panavia SA Cement Plus, RelyX U200, SmartCem 2, and SpeedCEM Plus). The stress generated at the restoration-tooth interface during water immersion was evaluated. The shrinkage stress was measured immediately after curing and after 0.5 h, 24 h, 72 h, 96 h, 168 h, 240 h, 336 h, 504 h, 672 h, and 1344 h by means of photoelastic study. Water sorption and solubility were also studied. All tested materials during polymerization generated shrinkage stress ranging from 4.8 MPa up to 15.1 MPa. The decrease in shrinkage strain (not less than 57%) was observed after water storage (56 days). Self-adhesive cements, i.e., MaxCem Elite Chroma, SpeedCem Plus, Panavia SA Plus, and Breeze exhibited high values of water expansion stress (from 0 up to almost 7 MPa). Among other tested materials only composite resin cement Cement It and adhesive resin cement Panavia 2.0 showed water expansion stress (1.6 and 4.8, respectively). The changes in stress value (decrease in contraction stress or built up of hydroscopic expansion) in time were material-dependent.

Phosphoric and carboxylic methacrylate esters as bonding agents in self-adhesive resin cements

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of pH and phosphoric ester structure (phosphonate or phosphate) on the bond strength of different dental restorative materials. The following three self-adhesive resin cements were used in the present study: RelyX^™ Unicem, Maxcem and Multilink Sprint The pH of each cement was measured using a pH meter. The cements were used to attach a variety of restorative materials to human dentin and the bond strength was measured by assessing shear strength using a universal testing machine. The pH values of RelyX Unicem, Maxcem and Multilink Sprint were 3.78, 1.78 and 3.42, respectively. Maxcem, a phosphate-based self-adhesive cement, was demonstrated to form the weakest bonds. No significant difference in bond strength was observed between RelyX Unicem and Multilink Sprint, which are phosphonate-based cements. The results of the present study suggest that the chemical structure of the functional monomer influences the performance of an adhesive material. Furthermore, the pH of acidic functional monomers containing phosphonate or phosphate groups has an effect on the strength of bonds formed between dentin and restorative materials.

Hygroscopic expansion of self-adhesive resin cements and the integrity of all-ceramic crowns

OBJECTIVE

Low pH neutralization and subsequent remnant hydrophilicity can lead to hygroscopic expansion of self-adhesive resin cements (SARCs) after water storage. The aim of this in vitro study was to investigate the effects of hygroscopic expansion of SARCs, used as luting and partial core build-up material, on integrity and cement gap thickness increase of all-ceramic CAD/CAM crowns.

METHODS

Human third molars (n=48) were prepared and anatomical all-ceramic CAD/CAM crowns were manufactured (VITABLOCS Mark II, VITA Zahnfabrik). Crowns internal surfaces were HF etched and silanized. The prepared teeth with their respective crowns were divided into 6 groups (n=8). In groups 1, 3 and 5 the coronal dentin was removed to simulate a partial core build-up. Groups 1 and 2 were luted with iCEM (Heraeus Kulzer), 3 and 4 with RelyX Unicem 2 Automix (3M), 5 and 6 with Variolink Esthetic DC (Ivoclar Vivadent). All specimens were dual cured and stored in distilled water at 37°C. Crown integrity was controlled at baseline and in regular intervals until 180 days. Cement gap thickness was measured using an optical 3D scanner (ATOS Triple scan, GOM) at baseline and after 180 days. Crown integrity was statistically analysed using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and cement gap thickness increase using two-way ANOVA (α=0.05).

RESULTS

After 180 days storage, crack formation was observed in all specimens of group 1 (mean survival time of 85.5 days), in one specimen of group 2 and in two specimens of group 4. Two-way ANOVA analysis revealed a statistically significant interaction between material type and build-up on cement gap size increase for iCEM.

SIGNIFICANCE

Within the limits of this study, the application of SARCs with low pH neutralization as partial build-up material under CAD/CAM crowns is not recommended for clinical use.

Titanium dioxide nanotubes addition to self-adhesive resin cement: Effect on physical and biological properties

OBJECTIVES

This study has investigated the influence of Titanium dioxide nanotubes (TiO₂-nt) addition to self-adhesive resin cement on the degree of conversion, water sorption, and water solubility, mechanical and biological properties.

METHODS

A commercially available auto-adhesive resin cement (RelyX U200™, 3M ESPE) was reinforced with varying amounts of nanotubes (0.3, 0.6, 0.9wt%) and evaluated at different curing modes (self- and dual cure). The DC in different times (3, 6, 9, 12 and 15min), water sorption (Ws) and solubility (Sl), 3-point flexural strength (σf), elastic modulus (E), Knoop microhardness (H) and viability of NIH/3T3 fibroblasts were performed to characterize the resin cement.

RESULTS

Reinforced self-adhesive resin cement, regardless of concentration, increased the DC for the self- and dual-curing modes at all times studied. The concentration of the TiO₂-nt and the curing mode did not influence the Ws and Sl. Regarding σf, concentrations of both 0.3 and 0.9wt% for self-curing mode resulted in data similar to that of dual-curing unreinforced cement. The E increased with the addition of 0.9wt% for self-cure mode and H increased with 0.6 and 0.9wt% for both curing modes. Cytotoxicity assays revealed that reinforced cements were biocompatible.

SIGNIFICANCE

TiO₂-nt reinforced self-adhesive resin cement are promising materials for use in indirect dental restorations. Taken together, self-adhesive resin cement reinforced with TiO₂-nt exhibited physicochemical and mechanical properties superior to those of unreinforced cements, without compromising their cellular viability.

The Effect of Different Storage Media on Color Stability of Self-Adhesive Composite Resin Cements for up to One Year

The aim of this study was to analyze the long-term color stability of eight self-adhesive composite resin cements (SACRCs) after storage in diverse media for up to one year. 480 discs (diameter: 12 mm/thickness: 1.0 ± 0.05 mm) were fabricated (n = 60/SACRC): (1) BeautyCem (BEA); (2) Bifix SE (BIF); (3) Clearfil SA Cement Automix (CLE); (4) RelyX Unicem 2 Automix (RXU); (5) SeT (SET); (6) SmartCem 2 (SMC); (7) SoloCem (SOC); and (8) SpeedCEM (SPC). After polishing, specimens were immersed in (a) red wine (RW); (b) curry-solution (CU); (c) cress-solution (CR); and (d) distilled water (DW) at 37 °C and measured after 7, 28, 90, 180, and 365 days for color differences (ΔE) and water absorption (WA). Non-aged specimens were used as baselines. After 365 days, all of the discs were polished and their ΔE was measured. Data were analyzed using Kolmogorov-Smirnov, partial-eta-squared/η_P², 3-/1-way ANOVA with Tukey-HSD post-hoc test (α = 0.05). Significant differences occurred between all SACRCs for WA (p ≤ 0.003), except in RXU and in SET and in ΔE (p ≤ 0.002), except in SET and SPC. The significantly highest WA presented in SOC; the lowest showed in BEA. Significant ΔE differences and a decrease after polishing between all storage media were found (p < 0.001) with highest values for RW, followed by CU, CR, and DW. The lowest ΔE was measured for CLE, followed by SOC, BIF, RXU, BEA, SPC, SET, and SMC (p < 0.001) and increased significantly during aging. The highest ΔE decrease presented in BEA. SACRCs showed an increase in WA/ΔE within total aging time. Discoloration could not be removed completely by polishing. SACRCs need to be carefully selected for restorations in the esthetical zone with visible restoration margins. Polishing can significantly reduce the marginal discoloration.

Effect of Resin Bonded Luting Agents Influencing Marginal Discrepancy in All Ceramic Complete Veneer Crowns

INTRODUCTION

Marginal discrepancy severely affects the long term success of All ceramic complete veneer crowns. The precise role of resin luting agents influencing this phenomenon needs to be explored further.

AIM

To estimate and compare the marginal discrepancy in CAD/CAM processed All ceramic complete veneer crowns prior and following luting with resin bonded luting agents.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Extracted human maxillary first premolars were randomly allocated into four groups of 27 samples each Viz., Group I-Resin Modified Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC) (RelyX), Group II-Bis-GMA based dual cure resin cement (Variolink II), Group III-PMMA based resin cement (Superbond), Group IV- Urethane Dimethacrylate resin cement (Calibra). Following tooth preparation, CAD/CAM All ceramic complete veneer crowns were fabricated and sectioned and marginal discrepancy was evaluated using a scanning electron microscope (TESCAN, Magnification power-1,00,000x) prior and after luting with the experimental resin cements.

RESULTS

The vertical and horizontal discrepancy before and after cementation with Group I [270.08±103.10μm, 165.3±53.00μm and 270.86±102.70μm, 166.62±54.96μm respectively]; Group II [254.21±79.20μm, 117.75±24.29μm and 234.81±79μm, 116.89±18.22μm respectively]; Group III [272.47±86.25μm, 142.08±50.83μm and 251.82±62.69μm, 136.07±44.95μm respectively]; Group IV were [260.28±64.81μm, 116.98±17.71μm and 233.08±69.44μm, 116.58±21.13μm respectively]. ANOVA inferred a statistically significant difference between the four test specimen with regards to vertical and horizontal marginal discrepancy after cementation (F=9.092, p<0.001), (F=10.97, p<0.001). Tukey HSD Post-hoc test observed significant differences in vertical and horizontal marginal discrepancies between the resin modified glass ionomer and resin cements (p<0.05).

CONCLUSION

Resin cements exhibited a greater reduction in the marginal discrepancy than the resin modified glass ionomer following luting in All ceramic complete veneer crowns. Hence resin cements are more preferable to GIC for luting All ceramic complete veneer crowns.

Influence of Curing Mode on the Surface Energy and Sorption/Solubility of Dental Self-Adhesive Resin Cements

This study investigated the influence of curing mode (dual- or self-cure) on the surface energy and sorption/solubility of four self-adhesive resin cements (SARCs) and one conventional resin cement. The degree of conversion (DC) and surface energy parameters including degree of hydrophilicity (DH) were determined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and contact angle measurements, respectively (n = 5). Sorption and solubility were assessed by mass gain or loss after storage in distilled water or lactic acid for 60 days (n = 5). A linear regression model was used to correlate between the results (%DC vs. DH and %DC/DH vs. sorption/solubility). For all materials, the dual-curing consistently produced significantly higher %DC values than the self-curing (p < 0.05). Significant negative linear regressions were established between the %DC and DH in both curing modes (p < 0.05). Overall, the SARCs showed higher sorption/solubility values, in particular when immersed in lactic acid, than the conventional resin cement. Linear regression revealed that %DC and DH were negatively and positively correlated with the sorption/solubility values, respectively. Dual-curing of SARCs seems to lower the sorption and/or solubility in comparison with self-curing by increased %DC and occasionally decreased hydrophilicity.

Influence of an iodonium salt on the properties of dual-polymerizing self-adhesive resin cements

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Dual-polymerizing self-adhesive resin cements present mechanical properties that may adversely affect the clinical performance of luted fiber-reinforced posts.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the properties of dual-polymerizing self-adhesive resin cements after the addition of an onium salt.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The experimental groups were set according to the molar concentration of diphenyliodonium hexafluorphosphate (DPIHFP) (0.5, 1, and 2 mol%). The resin cements were submitted to a push-out bond strength test and assessed for flexural strength (ISO 4049/2009), degree of conversion (Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy), depth of polymerization, swelling coefficient, and degradation in solvent. The data were statistically analyzed by ANOVA, Tukey test, Kruskal-Wallis test, Dunn multiple comparison, and paired Student t test (α=.05).

RESULTS

All the RelyX U100 groups with onium salt showed the highest degree of conversion after 24 hours and 7 days (P<.001). However, no statistical difference was found among the BisCem groups (P=.054). The addition of 0.5 mol% DPIHFP increased the push-out bond strength and microhardness of RelyX U100 and promoted less degradation after immersion in solvent. The BisCem control group did not present a statistical difference from the experimental groups in terms of bond strength; the control group and the 0.5 mol% group showed no degradation in solvent. For swelling coefficient and flexural strength, no difference was found between the BisCem groups (P=.067 and P=.173), and the RelyX U100 2 mol% group presented the lower value (P<.001 and P=.048). Depth of polymerization was not statistically different in the experimental groups for either resin cement (P=.999).

CONCLUSIONS

The addition of 0.5 mol% DPIHFP improved the physical properties of dual-polymerizing self-adhesive resin cements.
