Abstract
The objective of this article is to discuss the importance of oral health in achieving healthy ageing and the role of all stakeholders in improving oral health for older adults. The World Health Organization defined healthy ageing as the process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables well-being in older age. It recognized healthy ageing as an important goal and the key to turn population ageing from a challenge to an opportunity. Healthy ageing has positive impacts on individual older adults, their families and societies. It enhances quality of life of older adults, strengthen family bonding of families and reduce resource demand of the societies. Maintaining oral health and function is essential in healthy ageing. Oral health affects systemic health, cognitive health and psychological health. Oral functions such as eating ensure nutritional health in older adults. Most oral diseases are preventable and oral function decline can be recovered by intervention. Unfortunately, oral diseases remain prevalent and oral function decline is being neglected in older adults. Policy makers, national dental associations, academics and healthcare professionals should collaborate to provide a patient-centred, comprehensive and integrated care to older adults. Health policy reforms are needed to reduce the global oral health inequalities in older adults. Population-wide prevention should be accessible, affordable and available to older adults. Universal oral health coverage is crucial for integration of oral health into general health care.

Abstract
It is estimated that nearly a half of the world's population over 30 years old suffer from some kind of periodontal disease (PD). Although preventable, PD can pose a significant health burden to patients, causing from pain and discomfort to disfigurement and death. The management of PD often requires surgical procedures accompanied of systemic antibiotic and anti-inflammatory treatments. Curcumin (CUR), a potent anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial active, has shown great promise in the management of PD; however, its effects are often limited by its low bioavailability. In this work, we report the development of electrospun nanofibres (NFs) loaded with CUR nanocrystals (NCs) for the management of PD. NCs of 100 nm were obtained by media milling and loaded into dissolving polyvinyl alcohol NFs using electrospinning. The resultant NCs-in-NFs dissolved in water spontaneously, releasing NCs with a particle size of ∼120 nm. The physiochemical characterisation of the systems indicated the absence of chemical interactions between drug and polymer, and nanofibres with an amorphous nature. In vitro release profiles demonstrated that the NCs had a significantly higher dissolution rate (∼100 % at day 40) than the control group (approximately 6 % at day 40), which consisted of NFs containing a physical mixture of the drug and stabiliser. Finally, mucosal deposition studies demonstrated a 10-fold higher capacity of the novel NCs-in-NFs system to deposit CUR ex vivo using excised neonatal porcine mucosal tissue, when compared to the control group.

Abstract
To assess the clinical periodontal status of abutment teeth in regards of different design components of distal-extension removable partial dentures. Subjects (N=100) with acrylic or cobalt-chromium distal-extension removable partial dentures were enrolled and their periodontal parameters plaque and gingival indices [PI, GI], probing depths [PD], clinical attachment loss [CAL] and a mobility index [MI] evaluated. Denture base type, major connector, occlusal rests position, design of direct retainers, retention, stability and denture wearing habits were further evaluated. Acrylic RPDs were associated with higher mean±SE PI [1.70±0.74], GI [1.76±0.55], PD scores [2.47±1.02 mm] and CAL values [4.46±2.11 mm] compared to CO-CR RPDs [p⟨0.05]. For abutments, the PI [1.6±0.83], GI [1.72±0.57], PD [2.32±1.03] and CAL [4.26±2.08] were higher than their non-abutments counterparts [p⟨0.05]. CAL scores were found to be significantly higher for mandibular abutments compared to maxillary ones [P=0.002]. The highest PI [1.83±1.10] and GI [2.00±0.00] scores were associated with lingual bars and horse-shoe connectors, respectively. Full palatal coverage and lingual plates were associated with the highest PD [2.80±0.48] and CAL [4.70±0.37] scores. Acrylic RPDs, type of major connector, wrought wire clasps and distal occlusal rests may be considered as risk factors for periodontal disease progression in distal-extension removable partial denture wearers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This work aimed to evaluate if doxycycline-doped polymeric nanoparticles possessed any anti-inflammatory effect and promote osteogenic/cementogenic differentiation of stem cells from human periodontal ligament (PDLSCs). METHODS The polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) were produced by a polymerization/precipitation process and doped with doxycycline (Dox-NPs). PDLSCs were cultured in the presence or absence of the NPs under osteogenic medium or IL-1β treatment. Cells' differentiation was assessed by gene expression analysis of osteogenic/cementogenic markers alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and Runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2). An anti-inflammatory effect was also ascertained by analyzing IL-1β gene expression. Adipogenic and chondrogenic differentiation was used to confirm the multipotency of PDLSCs. RESULTS Gene expression of ALP and RUNX2 in PDLSCs was significantly upregulated by the osteogenic medium (ALP: p<0.001; RUNX2: p = 0.005) while Dox-NPs further enhanced ALP gene expression of PDLSCs treated with the osteogenic medium. Furthermore, Dox-NPs suppressed the up-regulation of IL-1β when cells were subjected to an inflammatory challenge. CONCLUSIONS Dox-NPs enhanced PDLSCs differentiation into osteoblasts/cementoblasts lineages while providing an anti-inflammatory effect. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Due to their biocompatibility as well as anti-inflammatory and osteogenic/cementogenic effects, Dox-NPs are potential candidates for being used in periodontal regeneration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Maxillary incisor and canine teeth are commonly impacted and require multidisciplinary treatment to accommodate them in the dental arch. OBJECTIVES To assess the periodontal outcomes of impacted maxillary central incisor and canine teeth, which have been successfully aligned in the arch following surgical exposure and orthodontic traction with fixed appliance therapy. SEARCH METHODS Systematic literature searches without restrictions were undertaken in eight databases. SELECTION CRITERIA Studies reporting surgical interventions in combination with orthodontic traction with fixed appliance therapy to align impacted maxillary incisors or canines published up to January 2023. DATA COLLECTION Duplicate independent study selection, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment. ANALYSIS Random-effects meta-analyses of aggregate data. RESULTS Twenty-three studies (21 retrospective and 2 prospective) were included in the final analysis. Three studies reported outcomes for maxillary central incisors and 20 reported outcomes for maxillary canines. For maxillary central incisors, all three studies were rated as being at moderate risk of bias. For maxillary canines, 17 studies and 1 study were rated at moderate and high risk of bias, respectively. Both prospective studies were rated at a low risk of bias. Meta-analyses comparing aligned impacted maxillary canines to their non-impacted contralateral counterparts found the former had increased Plaque Index scores (mean difference [MD] 0.19; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.03, 0.35; P = 0.03), increased clinical attachment loss (MD 0.40 mm; 95% CI 0.17, 0.63; P = 0.01), increased pocket probing depth (MD 0.18 mm; 95% CI 0.07, 0.28; P = 0.001), increased bone loss (MD 0.51 mm; 95% CI 0.31, 0.72; P < 0.001), and reduced keratinized gingival width (MD -0.31 mm; 95% CI -0.61, -0.01; P = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS Limited evidence suggests that surgical exposure and orthodontic alignment of impacted maxillary central incisor or canine teeth, results in modest adverse effects in the periodontium. These findings should be viewed with caution as our certainty for these outcomes is very low to low due to the bias and heterogeneity. Further well-conducted studies reporting patient centred outcomes are required. REGISTRATION PROSPERO (CRD42020225639).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ultrasound is a non-invasive, cross-sectional imaging technique emerging in dentistry. It is an adjunct tool for diagnosing pathologies in the oral cavity that overcomes some limitations of current methodologies, including direct clinical examination, 2D radiographs, and cone beam computerized tomography. Increasing demand for soft tissue imaging has led to continuous improvements on transducer miniaturization and spatial resolution. The aims of this study are (1) to create a comprehensive overview of the current literature of ultrasonic imaging relating to dentistry, and (2) to provide a view onto investigations with immediate, intermediate, and long-term impact in periodontology and implantology. METHODS A rapid literature review was performed using two broad searches conducted in the PubMed database, yielding 576 and 757 citations, respectively. A rating was established within a citation software (EndNote) using a 5-star classification. The broad search with 757 citations allowed for high sensitivity whereas the subsequent rating added specificity. RESULTS A critical review of the clinical applications of ultrasound in dentistry was provided with a focus on applications in periodontology and implantology. The role of ultrasound as a developing dental diagnostic tool was reviewed. Specific uses such as soft and hard tissue imaging, longitudinal monitoring, as well as anatomic and physiological evaluation were discussed. CONCLUSIONS Future efforts should be directed towards the transition of ultrasonography from a research tool to a clinical tool. Moreover, a dedicated effort is needed to introduce ultrasonic imaging to dental education and the dental community to ultimately improve the quality of patient care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) are commonly used for managing psychological diseases such as depression. These disorders are also directly associated with periodontal and peri-implant diseases, namely periodontitis and peri-implantitis, respectively. It is hypothesized that there is no difference in periodontal and peri-implant clinicoradiographic status and unstimulated whole salivary interleukin (IL)-1β levels in participants using selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) and controls (individuals not using SSRI). The aim of the present observational case-control study was to compare periodontal and peri-implant clinicoradiographic statuses and whole salivary IL-1β in participants using SSRI and controls. METHODS Users of SSRI and controls were included. In all participants, periodontal (plaque index [PI], gingival index [GI], probing depth [PD], clinical attachment loss [AL] and marginal bone loss [MBL]) and peri-implant (modified PI [mPI], modified GI [mGI], PD and crestal bone loss [CBL]) were assessed. Unstimulated whole saliva was collected and IL-1β levels were determined. Information related to duration of implants in function, duration of depressive symptoms and treatment of depression was retrieved from healthcare records. Sample-size was estimated using 5% error and group comparisons were performed. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS Thirty-seven SSRI users and 35 controls were assessed. Individuals using SSRI had a history of depression of 4.2 ± 2.5 years. The mean age of SSRI-users and controls were 48.7 ± 5.7 and 45.3 ± 5.1 years, respectively. Tooth brushing twice daily was reported by 75.7% and 62.9% SSRI-users and controls, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference in PI, mPI, GI, mGI, PD, clinical AL, numbers of MT and mesial and distal MBL and CBL among individuals using SSRI compared with controls (Tables 3 and 4). The unstimulated whole salivary flow rate in individuals using SSRI and controls was 0.11 ± 0.003 and 0.12 ± 0.001 ml/min, respectively. Whole salivary IL-1β levels in individuals using SSRI and controls were 57.6 ± 11.6 pg/ml and 34.6 ± 5.2 pg/ml, respectively. CONCLUSION Users of SSRI and controls demonstrate healthy periodontal and peri-implant tissue statuses with no marked differences in whole salivary IL-1β levels provided oral hygiene is stringently maintained.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Studies have shown that non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT) helps reduce periodontal inflammation and glycemic levels in patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus; however, the role of NSPT with adjunct photodynamic therapy on glycemic status and periodontal parameters in prediabetic patients remains unclear. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of NSPT with and without adjunct PDT on periodontal and glycemic statuses in prediabetic patients with periodontal disease. METHODS Prediabetic (Group-1) and non-diabetic (Group-2) patients diagnosed with periodontal inflammation were included. In both groups, patients were randomly assigned to test and control-groups. In the test- and control groups, patients underwent NSPT with and without adjunct PDT, respectively. The following parameters were assessed at baseline and at four weeks' follow-up: plaque index (PI); gingival index (GI), probing depth (PD), clinical attachment loss (CAL) and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). Collection of demographic data and assessment of full mouth marginal bone loss was performed at baseline. Level of significance was set at P < 0.05. RESULTS At baseline, there was no difference in PI, GI and PD among patients with and without prediabetes. At 3-weeks' follow up there was no difference in PI, GI and PD among patients without prediabetes. PI (P < 0.01), GI (P < 0.01) and PD (P < 0.01) were significantly higher in the control-group compared with the test-group at 3-weeks' follow-up in patients without prediabetes. The HbA1c levels were significantly higher in patients with prediabetes throughout the study duration compared with individuals without prediabetes. CONCLUSION One session of NSPT with or without PDT reduce periodontal inflammation but do not influence glycemic levels in prediabetic patients.

Abstract
The expected contribution of this study is to have a complete view of the available products used in the prevention of periodontal disease in dogs. The related studies in databases including Web of Science, Science Direct, and Scopus, from 1992 to 2021, were retrieved, and 36 studies were used in the systematic review. Among the continents researched, North America proved to have the most developed research relating to the subject. The active ingredients researched, isolated, or compared to each other, were polyphosphates > phytogenics > chlorhexidine > enzymes > vitamin C > xylitol = adelmidrol = and probiotics. The form of use of active products was chewable > solution via water = via food > biscuits > paste and gels > mucoadhesive. Gingivitis index was the most studied parameter used to assess oral health. According to the evidence recovered in the systematic review was possible to conclude that products with different active agents and forms of use demonstrated positive effects in the prevention of periodontal diseases. The results of this study summarize the most frequently used active ingredients and application forms for cleaning dogs' teeth and provide a roadmap for future research on the maintenance of oral health in dogs.

Abstract
This article aimed to assess the efficacy of periodontal regenerative therapy (PRT) for treating periodontal intrabony defects in East Asians. The systematic review was performed according to the PRISMA guidelines. Literature searches on the PubMed and national medical journal databases, and representative clinical journals of the East Asians were performed on July 31, 2018. Randomized controlled trials, prospective case-control studies, retrospective analyses, and case series receiving regenerative procedures, including barrier membrane (BM) and enamel matrix derivative (EMD) applications with or without bone replacement graft (BRG), with follow-up periods of 6 and 12 months were evaluated. The outcome variables were probing depth (PD) reduction and clinical attachment level (CAL) gain. Twenty studies were included, of which eight were assessed for bias risk. Compared to open flap debridement, PD reduction and CAL gain were superior in all PRTs at both follow-up time points. BM or EMD alone showed equivalent outcomes at 6 months, and CAL gain appeared greater with BM alone at 12 months. BM with BRG showed inferior CAL gain relative to BM alone, but EMD with BRG showed superior CAL gain relative to EMD alone at 12 months. In conclusion, PRT showed improved regenerative outcomes compared with OFD in East Asians, while BM application appeared less efficient than in non-East Asians. BRG supplementation provided additional clinical benefits in EMD application.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Apart from the Epithelial Cell rests of Malassez (ERM), the dental pulp (DP) contains the same types of mesenchymal cells as the periodontal ligament (PDL). The ERM may affect the characteristics of mesenchymal cells in the PDL. The aim of this study was to examine whether DP cells cultured with ERM and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) could transform into PDL-like cells. METHODS Progenitor-dedifferentiated into stem-like cells (Pro-DSLCs) were produced by the induction of ERM with 5-Azacytidine and valproic acid. DP cells were cultured in mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) medium for 1 week under the following conditions: DP cells alone (controls); PDL cells alone; co-culture of DP cells and ERM (DP+ERM) or Pro-DSLCs (DP+Pro-DSLC); co-culture of DP cells, HUVECs, and ERM cells (DP+ERM+HUVEC) or Pro-DSLCs (DP+Pro-DSLC+HUVEC). qRT-PCR, qMSP, and flow cytometry were performed. RESULTS The expression levels of PDL-related markers, Msx1, Msx2, Ncam1, Postn, S100a4, and MSC-positive markers, Cd29, Cd90, Cd105, were significantly higher in the PDL cells and DP+Pro-DSLC+HUVEC cultures than in the controls (p < 0.05). The DNA methylation levels of Msx1 and Cd29 in the PDL cells and DP+Pro-DSLC+HUVEC culture were significantly lower than in the controls (p < 0.01). We found a significant increase in the number of cells stained with MSX1 (p < 0.05) and CD29 (p < 0.01) in the DP+Pro-DSLC+HUVEC culture than in the controls. CONCLUSIONS Co-culture of DP cells with Pro-DSLCs and HUVECs induced their transformation into PDL-like cells. This method may prove useful for periodontal regeneration via tissue engineering.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Tooth autotransplantation is a viable surgical treatment option for patients with missing permanent teeth. Premolars are generally used for autotransplantation but often require extensive modifications. This case report evaluates the use of supernumerary tooth as an alternative option for premolar autotransplantation. This report shows successful supernumerary tooth autotransplantation with 6-year follow-up. METHODS A 13-year-old male with non-contributory medical history was referred for a missing maxillary left central incisor (#9) and presence of a supernumerary tooth. The clinical and radiographic examination revealed presence of supernumerary tooth with similar dimensions to a central incisor. The treatment plan included autotransplantation of the supernumerary tooth to replace the missing central incisor (short-term) and future implant replacement of the autotransplanted tooth when jaw growth ceases (long-term). The patient and parents consented to treatment. A 3-D tooth replica was constructed based on CBCT analyses. Site #9 was prepared using split ridge technique to create a socket to house the 3-D replica. Upon achieving proper socket form, the supernumerary tooth was extracted and autotransplanted in the prepared socket. The supernumerary tooth was splinted, and the bite opened posteriorly using composite to eliminate any occlusal interferences. RESULTS The patient was followed up clinically and radiographically. The autotransplanted supernumerary tooth integrated well within the newly created socket and remained functional at the 6-year follow-up. CONCLUSIONS The current case presents successful management of supernumerary tooth autotransplantation with 6-year follow-up. The results show stable periodontium with satisfactory functional and aesthetic results.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Self-adhesive dual cured resin cements provide easier clinical application than conventional resin cements but release higher amounts of unreacted monomers, potentially affecting their biocompatibility. This study aimed to compare the cytotoxic effects of self-adhesive dual cured resin cements with two conventional resin cements. METHODS Samples of four resin cements, two self-adhesive dual cured cements (group A: RelyX Unicem, group B: SmartCem), and two conventional resin cements (group C: Panavia 2.0, group D: Variolink Esthetic DC) were prepared with a similar dimension under standardized polymerization conditions and stored in water. For each material 18 samples were used and cell cultures of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) or periodontal ligament cells (PDL-hTERT) were added under appropriate conditions. One experimental group (group E) was left untreated as control. A cell viability WST test, was performed in each experimental group at day 1, 7, 14 and 21. Moreover, microscopic examination of cells was performed using cell viability staining. RESULTS Viability of both cell types as determined by WST test was significantly impaired at all time periods by the four different cement materials compared to the untreated control. Comparison between the four materials revealed different inhibition of the viability of both, PDL-hTERT and hMSC cells (group C > group B > group A > group D; p < 0.0001). SIGNIFICANCE All resin-based cements caused significant impairment of cell viability, reflecting considerable cytotoxicity. Variolink caused significantly smaller changes of viability than the other tested materials.

Abstract
Infection in the mouth causes systemic and distant organ changes in dogs. This article summarizes the information available. Reported changes include an increase in liver-generated acute-phase proteins in response to the infectious insult to the body and evidence of microscopic changes in renal, hepatic, and cardiac tissues. Treatment of periodontal infection results in a decrease in the acute-phase protein concentration, which supports the hypothesis that a cause-and-effect relationship exists between periodontal infection and distant organ changes.

Abstract
The understanding of biological concepts in wound healing together with the evolution in biomaterials applied in periodontal regeneration allowed for improved, minimally invasive surgical techniques with a wider range of application and adapted to achieve multiple goals at the same time. Regenerating attachment was never the sole end point, but maintaining the patient's own natural dentition in health and esthetics is becoming a feasible goal even in cases considered challenging just a few years ago. In this article we report on the evolution of techniques and biomaterials and their application in esthetic and challenging cases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Describe and compare harmful periodontal effects as a consequence of maxillary expansion in adult patients with different types of anchorage devices in non-surgical expanders with skeletal anchorage and surgically assisted maxillary expansion. MATERIALS AND METHODS An exhaustive search was carried out on the electronic databases PubMed (MEDLINE), Embase, Cochrane and LILACS. Additionally, journal references and grey literature were searched without any restrictions. After the selection and extraction process; risk of bias was assessed by the ROB-1 Cochrane tool and Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) for randomized trials and cohort studies, respectively. RESULTS Of 621 studies retrieved from the searches, six were finally included in this review. One of them presented a low risk bias, while five were excellent respective to selection, comparability and outcomes. Results showed that maxillary expansion in adults using non-surgical expanders (bone-borne or tooth-bone-borne with bicortical skeletal anchorage) produce less harmful periodontal effects, such as: alveolar bending with an average range from 0.92° to 2.32°, compared to surgically assisted maxillary expansion (tooth-borne) of 6.4°; dental inclination with an average range from 0.07° to 2.4°, compared to surgically assisted maxillary expansion (tooth-borne) with a range from 2.01° to 5.56°. CONCLUSIONS Although limited, the current evidence seems to show that the bone-borne or tooth-bone-borne with bicortical skeletal anchorage produces fewer undesirable periodontal effects.

Abstract
The immune response elicited by vaccines is crucial in determining their eventual efficacy. The human microbiome, in particular, that of the gut has been demonstrated to influence the immunogenicity of vaccines delivered by both the oral and non-oral routes. There is a significant overlap between the microflora of the mouth and that recovered from the gut, with certain periodontopathogens playing key roles in influencing the gut microflora. The present paper hypothesized that the oral microflora may play a role in the eventual immunogenicity and efficacy of vaccines.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The study aimed to clinically assess the association between periodontitis and COVID-19-related outcomes. MATERIAL AND METHODS Data pertaining to patient demographics, medical history, blood parameters, periodontal clinical examination and aMMP-8 point-of-care diagnostics (both site-level and patient-level) was recorded for eighty-two COVID-19-positive patients. COVID-19-related outcomes such as COVID-19 pneumonia, death/survival, types of hospital admission and need of assisted ventilation were also assessed. RESULTS Males were predominantly afflicted with COVID-19, with advanced age exhibiting a greater association with the presence of periodontitis. Higher severity of periodontitis led to 7.45 odds of requiring assisted ventilation, 36.52 odds of hospital admission, 14.58 odds of being deceased and 4.42 odds of COVID-19-related pneumonia. The aMMP-8 mouthrinse kit was slightly more sensitive but less specific than aMMP-8 site-specific tests. CONCLUSIONS Based on the findings of the present study, periodontitis seems to be related to poorer COVID-19-related outcomes. However, within the constraints of this work, a direct causality may not be established. Periodontitis, by means of skewing the systemic condition for a number of comorbidities, may eventually influence COVID-19 outcomes in an indirect manner. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The study is the first to clinically, and by means of a validated point-of-care diagnostic methodology, assess the association between periodontal health and COVID-19-related outcomes. Assessment of the periodontal status of individuals can aid in the identification of risk groups during the pandemic along with reinforcing the need to maintain oral hygiene and seeking periodontal care.

Abstract
Even though teeth are often included in the field of view for a variety of medical CT studies, dental pathology is often missed by radiologists. Given the myriad morbidity and occasional mortality associated with sequelae of dental pathology, an important goal is to decrease these false negatives. However, given the ever-increasing volume of cases studies that radiologists have to read and the number of structures and diseases they have to evaluate, it is important not to place undue time restraints on the radiologist to this end. We hypothesized that generating panoramic dental radiographs from non-dental CT scans can permit identification of key diseases, while not adding much time to interpretation. The key advantage of panoramic dental radiographs is that they display the plane of the teeth in two dimensions, thereby facilitating fast and accurate assessment. We found that interpreting panoramic radiographic reconstructions compared to the full CT volumes reduced time-to-diagnosis of key dental pathology on average by roughly a factor of four. This expedition was statistically significant, and the average time-to-diagnosis for panoramic reconstructions was on the order of seconds, without a loss in accuracy compared to full CT. As such, we posit that panoramic reconstruction can serve as a one-slice additional series in any CT image stack that includes the teeth in its field of view.

Abstract
Context: It is a known fact that periodontal tissue regeneration can be achieved by the use of periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs). Current mainstay of periodontal treatment is focusing on stem cell tissue engineering as an effective therapy, making it important to isolate PDLSCs from periodontal tissues. Aims: The present research endeavor was undertaken to elucidate a technique for isolating PDLSCs for in vivo reconstructing the natural PDL tissue. Settings and Design: The study design involves In vitro prospective study. Materials and Methods: Premolar teeth were extracted from 12 patients who were under orthodontic treatment. PDL cells were scraped from their roots. Using 10 ml of Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium with pH 7.2, the specimens of the periodontal tissue were transferred to laboratory where cell culture was done. Isolated stem cells were grown on 24-well microtiter plates-containing cover slips. They were incubated overnight at approximately 37°C in 95% air and 5% humidification. Anti-CD 45, CD73, CD90, CD105, and CD146 antibodies were used. After staining, cells were observed under phase-contrast microscopy and in inverted microscope. Results: The cells showed a marked growth and 90% confluence at day 6. Cells presented thin and long fibroblastic spindle morphology. Isolated PDLSCs showed colony-forming ability at the 14th day after seeding. Immunohistochemical staining of PDLSCs showed positive uptake for CD146, CD90, CD73, CD105, and negative uptake for CD45. Conclusions: The human PDLSCs can be clearly isolated and characterized by using CD90, CD73, CD146, and CD105 markers of stem cells.

Abstract
Background Periodontal disease has been linked to the development of Alzheimer's disease in people. It is theorized that the chronic inflammatory condition characteristic of oral dysbiosis in patients with periodontal disease leads to disruption of the blood-brain barrier, cytotoxin- and pathogen-induced brain damage, and accumulation of neurotoxic β-amyloid. In this inflammatory theory of Alzheimer's disease, β-amyloid-a known antimicrobial protein-accumulates in response to oral pathogens. Canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD) is considered a naturally occurring animal model of human Alzheimer's disease. Like humans, periodontal disease is quite common in dogs; however, a link between periodontal disease and cognitive dysfunction has not been identified in this species. Aim The purpose of this prospective investigation was to compare visual periodontal scores (from digital oral photographs) with numerical (0-54) cognitive assessment questionnaire forms in aging dogs with and without a clinical diagnosis of CCD. Methods A visual analogue scale (0-4) was used to score the severity of periodontal disease in 21 aging dogs: 11 dogs with a clinical diagnosis of presumptive CCD and 10 dogs without a clinical history of cognitive decline. Individuals scoring the dental photographs were blinded to all case information, including cognitive assessment scores. Cognitive assessment scores were compared with periodontal disease scores for all dogs. Results There was a significant (p < 0.05) association between periodontal and cognitive scores, with higher cognitive impairment scores being more likely in dogs with more severe periodontal disease and vice versa. No associations were identified between age and either periodontal disease or cognitive impairment. Conclusion Although a cause-and-effect relationship between periodontal disease and cognitive impairment cannot be ascertained from this preliminary study, we established a link between these two disorders that warrants further investigation using more stringent criteria for evaluating both periodontal disease and cognitive dysfunction.

Abstract
AIMS To test the hypothesis that higher periodontal inflamed surface area (PISA) positively correlates with the coefficient of variation of red cell distribution width (RDW-CV) in non-obese hypertensive patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS Hypertensive subjects aged between 40-60 years with and without periodontitis were enrolled for the study. They completed a structured questionnaire that included gender, height, weight, and other variables. Body mass index was calculated to exclude obese individuals. Clinical periodontal parameters were recorded. PISA was calculated, and participants were divided into four groups: Group 1: Non-hypertension without periodontitis, Group 2: Non-hypertensive with periodontitis, Group 3: Hypertensive without periodontitis, and Group 4: Hypertensive with periodontitis. The hematologic evaluation included red cell distribution width analysis. RESULTS ANOVA showed age and diastolic blood pressure were significantly related to RDW-CV at p < 0.001. Periodontal parameters showed significant association with RDW-CV in both hypertensive and non-hypertensive groups at p < 0.001. Pearson correlation test showed a significant association between RDW-CV and PISA. Multivariate regression models showed PISA to be a significant predictor for RDW-CV in the periodontitis group compared to a non-periodontitis group. CONCLUSIONS The increase in the RDW-CV in the periodontitis group in both hypertensive and non-hypertensive indicates the independent role of increased inflammation on pathogenic alteration of red cell morphology.

Abstract
Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with surface-anchored molecules present tremendous potential in tissue regeneration. However, little is known about chiral-modified AuNPs. In this study, we successfully prepared L/D-cysteine-anchored AuNPs (L/D-Cys-AuNPs) and studied the effects of chiral-modified AuNPs on osteogenic differentiation and autophagy of human periodontal ligament cells (hPDLCs) and periodontal tissue regeneration. In vitro, more L-Cys-AuNPs than D-Cys-AuNPs tend to internalize in hPDLCs. L-Cys-AuNPs also significantly increased the expression of alkaline phosphatase, collagen type 1, osteocalcin, runt-related transcription factor 2, and microtubule-associated protein light chain 3 II and decreased the expression of sequestosome 1 in hPDLCs compared to the expression levels in the hPDLCs treated by D-Cys-AuNPs. In vivo tests in a rat periodontal-defect model showed that L-Cys-AuNPs had the greatest effect on periodontal-tissue regeneration. The activation of autophagy in L-Cys-AuNP-treated hPDLCs may be responsible for the cell differentiation and tissue regeneration. Therefore, compared to D-Cys-AuNPs, L-Cys-AuNPs show a better performance in cellular internalization, regulation of autophagy, cell osteogenic differentiation, and periodontal tissue regeneration. This demonstrates the immense potential of L-Cys-AuNPs for periodontal regeneration and provides a new insight into chirally modified bioactive nanomaterials. L/D-Cys-AuNPs exert a chirality-dependent effect on hPDLCs. L-Cys-AuNPs efficiently induced osteogenic differentiation in hPDLCs. L-Cys-AuNPs significantly improved periodontal tissue regeneration.

Abstract
Currently, there is no compendial-level method to assess dissolution of particulate systems administered in the periodontal pocket. This work seeks to develop dissolution methods for extended release poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microspheres applied in the periodontal pocket. Arestin®, PLGA microspheres containing minocycline hydrochloride (MIN), is indicated for reduction of pocket depth in adult periodontitis. Utilizing Arestin® as a model product, two dissolution methods were developed: a dialysis set-up using USP apparatus 4 and a novel apparatus fabricated to simulate in vivo environment of the periodontal pocket. In the biorelevant method, the microspheres were dispersed in 250 μL of simulated gingival crevicular fluid (sGCF) which was enclosed in a custom-made dialysis enclosure. sGCF was continuously delivered to the device at a biorelevant flow rate and was collected daily for drug content analysis using UPLC. Both methods could discriminate release characteristics of a panel of MIN-loaded PLGA microspheres that differed in composition and process conditions. A mechanistic model was developed, which satisfactorily explained the release profiles observed using both dissolution methods. The developed methods may have the potential to be used as routine quality control tools to ensure batch-to-batch consistency and to support evaluation of bioequivalence for periodontal microspheres.

Abstract
Background Knowledge of gingival thickness (GT) and alveolar crest thickness (ACT) is essential when performing surgical and non-surgical procedures in the maxillary anterior teeth region. This study aimed at evaluating the GT and ACT in the maxillary anterior teeth region using 15-MHz B-mode Ultrasonic (US). Methods A total of 300 teeth from 50 healthy participants, comprising 25 women and 25 men, aged between 18 and 35 years were analyzed. We measured labial periodontal tissue structures of maxillary anterior teeth, including GT and ACT, at 3 mm apical to the gingival margin (GT3) and the crestal level, respectively. The GT and ACT measurements were correlated. Results The mean labial GT3 of the maxillary central incisors, lateral incisors, and canines were 1.24 ± 0.03 mm, 1.21 ± 0.03 mm and 1.11 ± 0.03 mm, respectively. Canine GT3 was significantly thin than those in the central and lateral incisors (P < 0.05). With regards to labial ACT, we recorded 0.79 ± 0.03 mm, 0.76 ± 0.02 mm and 0.73 ± 0.02 mm for maxillary central incisors, lateral incisors and canines, respectively. There were no significant differences in ACT of maxillary anterior teeth (P > 0.05). GT3 of men was greater than that of women (P < 0.05). In addition, GT and ACT were positively correlated (r = 0.32, P < 0.01). Conclusion 15-MHz B-mode US is an effective tool for measuring labial GT and ACT of anterior teeth. There are sex-associated differences in GT3 and the correlation between the GT3 and ACT of anterior teeth is moderately positive.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Periodontal health is of great concern for periodontists and orthodontists in the inter-disciplinary management of patients with bimaxillary protrusion. The aim of present study is to investigate changes in the alveolar bone in the maxillary incisor region and to explore its relationship with displacement of root apex as well as changes in the inclination of maxillary incisors during incisor retraction. METHODS Samples in this retrospective study consisted of 38 patients with bimaxillary protrusion. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images was taken before(T0) and after (T1) treatment. Alveolar bone thickness (ABT), height (ABH) and area (ABA) were utilized to evaluate changes in the alveolar bone, while incisor inclination and apex displacement were used to assess changes in the position of maxillary central and lateral incisors. Correlations between alveolar bone remodeling and apex displacement as well as changes in the inclination were investigated. RESULTS The labial ABT of central and lateral incisors at the mid-root third was increased. In contrast, the palatal ABT at crestal, mid-root and apical third level were consistently decreased. ABH was not altered on the labial side, while significantly decreased on the palatal side. ABA was not significantly increased on the labial side, but significantly decreased on the palatal side, leading to a significantly reduced total ABA. Orthodontic treatment significantly reduced inclination of upper incisors. Changes in the amount (T1-T0) of ABA was remarkably correlated with apex displacement and changes of inclination (T1-T0); in addition, using the multivariate linear regression analysis, changes of ABA on the palatal side (T1-T0) can be described by following equation: Changes of palatal ABA (T1-T0) = - 3.258- 0.139× changes of inclination (T1-T0) + 2.533 × apex displacement (T1-T0). CONCLUSIONS Retraction of incisors in bimaxillary protrusion patients may compromise periodontal bone support on the palatal side. An equation that incorporated the displacement of root apex and change in the incisor inclination may enable periodontist-orthodontist interdisciplinary coordination in assessing treatment risks and developing an individualized treatment plan for adult patients with bimaxillary protrusion. Moreover, the equation in predicating area of alveolar bone may reduce the risks of placing the teeth out of the bone boundary during 3D digital setups.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study evaluated the reproducibility of electronic color determination system evaluations of the marginal gingiva, which could be important for adhesive cervical fillings or prosthetic restorations that imitate the gingiva. MATERIAL AND METHODS In 50 subjects, the L*, a*, and b* color coordinates were evaluated five times at a point in the marginal area of a central incisor using different electronic color determination systems: (SP) Shadepilot, (ES) Easyshade, (CE) Crystaleye, and (SV) X-Rite. The mean color difference (ΔE) and its standard deviation between the five measurements from each participant were calculated separately for each device. Further ICC for interdevice reliability was determined. RESULTS The L*, a*, and b* color coordinates and ΔE values differed significantly among the systems (p < 0.001). Within each patient and measurement system, ΔE ranged from 1.4 to 3.2 (SD 1.1-2.5), L* from 2.6 to 5.7 (SD 2.6-5.7), a* from 11.9 to 21.3 (SD 3.6-3.9), and b* from 15.1 to 28.9 (SD 1.7-4.3). Interdevice reliability ranged between 0.675 and 0.807. CONCLUSIONS Color determination of the marginal gingiva using the electronic tooth color determination systems tested herein showed limited reproducibility. The results obtained with the different measurement systems differed enormously. CLINICAL RELEVANCE These results show that the electronic color measurement devices tested allow no high reproducible determination of color coordinates of the marginal gingiva.

Abstract
Introduction Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) and guided bone regeneration (GBR) are commonly used surgical procedures for the repair of damaged periodontal tissues. These procedures include the use of a membrane as barrier to prevent soft tissue ingrowth and to create space for slowly regenerating periodontium and bone. Recent approaches involve the use of membranes/scaffolds based on resorbable materials. These materials provide the advantage of dissolving by time without the need of surgical intervention to remove the scaffolds. Objectives This study aimed at preparing a new series of nanofibrous scaffolds for GTR/GBR applications with enhanced mechanical properties, cell adhesion, biocompatibility and antibacterial properties. Methods Electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds based on polylactic acid/cellulose acetate (PLA/CA) or poly(caprolactone) (PCL) polymers were prepared and characterized. Different concentrations of green-synthesized silver nanoparticles, AgNPs (1-2% w/v) and hydroxyapatite nanoparticles, HANPs (10-20% w/v) were incorporated into the scaffolds to enhance the antibacterial and bone regeneration activity. Results In-vitro studies showed that addition of HANPs improved the cell viability by around 50% for both types of nanofibrous scaffolds. The tensile properties were also improved through addition of 10% HANPs but deteriorated upon increasing the concentration to 20%. AgNPs significantly improved the antibacterial activity with 40 mm inhibition zone after 32 days. Additionally, the nanofibrous scaffolds showed a desirable degradation profile with losing around 40-70% of its mass in 8 weeks. Conclusions The obtained results show that the developed nanofibrous membranes are promising scaffolds for both GTR and GBR applications.

Abstract
Chronic periodontal disease affect the tissues supporting around the teeth like gingival tissue, connective tissue, alveolar bone and periodontal ligaments. Hitherto, periodontal treatment was targeted to selectively repopulate the defect site with cell that has capability to regenerate lost tissue by promoting the concept of guided tissue regeneration but it requires second surgery due to non- biodegradability. The use of polymeric biodegradable nanofibrous coated scaffold that have the ability to deliver bioactives required for regeneration to occur is relatively a newer concept. The functionalization of polymeric scaffold with Bromelain and magnesium doped hydroxyapatite nanoparticle enhanced the mechanical, physico-chemical, thermal and biological properties of the scaffold by imitating the intricate extracellular matrix (ECM) architecture which provided the necessary bioactive cues that offered control over cellular functions by showing antibacterial potential, hemocompatibility and increasing the proliferation and migration rate in vitro. In addition, in ovo chicken chorioallantoic membrane assay and ex vivo aortic ring assay confirmed the efficacy of the developed scaffold by encouraging angiogenesis required for maintaining its viability after implanting onto the infected area. Further, the scaffold positively interacted with the host and actively contributed to the process of tissue regeneration in vivo in Wistar rat model.

Abstract
Biofilm producing clinical bacterial isolates were isolated from periodontal and dental caries samples and identified as, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Streptococcus sanguis, S. salivarius, S. mutansand Staphylococcus aureus. Among the identified bacterial species, S. aureus and S. mutansshowed strong biofilm producing capacity. The other isolated bacteria, Streptococcus sanguis, S. salivarius showed moderate biofilm formation. These pathogens were subjected for the production of extracellular polysaccharides (EPS) in nutrient broth medium and the strain S. aureus synthesized more amounts of EPS (610 ± 11.2 µg/ml) than S. sanguis (480 ± 5.8 µg/ml).EPS production was found to be less in S. salivarius (52 ± 3.8 µg/ml).The solvent extract of A. sativum bulb showed the phytochemicals such as, carbohydrate, total protein, alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, tannins and sterioids. The solvent extract of A. sativum bulb showed wide ranges of activity against the selected dental pathogens. The difference in antibacterial activity of the solvent extract revealed differences in solubility of phytochemicals in organic solvents. Ethanol extract was highly active againstS. aureus (25 ± 2 mm). The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of crude garlic bulb varied widely and this clearly showed that bacteria exhibits different level of susceptibility to secondary metabolites. MIC value ranged between 20 ± 2 mg/ml and 120 ± 6 mg/ml and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) value ranged from 60 ± 5 mg/l to 215 ± 7 mg/ml. To conclude, A. sativum bulb can be effectively used to treat periodontal and dental caries infections.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This systematic review aims to summarize the effectiveness and patient compliances of Hawley retainer (HR) compared to vacuum-formed retainers (VFR) and provide the best clinical evidence related to the use of these retainers for maintaining tooth position following fixed orthodontic appliance so that orthodontists can decide which are the most appropriate methods and retainers to use for each individual patient. MATERIALS AND METHODS We searched the Cochrane Library, EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, Orthodontic journals, and relevant articles for eligible studies. Only RCTs studies were included; no restrictions on publication status or language were applied until May 20, 2019. We collected the study related to the effectiveness of these two retainers. Furthermore, patient-reported outcomes, survival time, cost-effectiveness, occlusal contact, and adverse effect on gingival and speech articulation were also collected. RESULTS We finally included fifteen articles in the qualitative synthesis. No significant difference was observed in patients who had worn the retainers on a full-time or part-time, basis in both HR and VFR in terms of the change in arch widths and arch lengths. VFR appeared to be better at preventing relapses of incisor irregularity than HR. Patient satisfaction with VFR was higher than with HR, and there was no difference in survival rates for both types of retainers. In terms of cost-effectiveness, occlusal contacts, and gingival health, there were a few studies with limited evidence to compare these retainers. For speech articulation, VFR was less affected in comparison to HR. CONCLUSIONS We found that wearing VFR provides better relapse prevention of incisor irregularity than HR in both arches, indicating their usefulness in clinical practice. However, there is no evidence to show that the pattern of time duration wearing these retainers provides excellent stability. Overall, there are insufficient high-quality RCTs to provide additional evidence, and further high-quality RCTs research is needed.

Abstract
PURPOSE Studies suggest that peptic ulcer and periodontal disease are positively associated with bladder cancer risk. These two factors are likely to share common biologic mechanisms such as inflammation and dysbiosis. We examined the joint association of peptic ulcer (gastric/duodenal) and periodontal disease on bladder cancer risk. METHODS We conducted a prospective analysis among 45,185 men (563 invasive bladder cancer cases) in the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study (follow-up 1986-2016). History of ulcer and periodontal disease was self-reported at baseline and updated during the follow-up. Cox proportional hazards models estimated hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for the joint associations of ulcers (gastric, duodenal) and periodontal disease, adjusting for age and other potential confounders. We tested for interaction using the Wald test for product terms. RESULTS Compared with men having no history of ulcer and periodontal disease, men with a history of peptic ulcer only (HR 1.22, 95% CI 0.90-1.66) and men with a history of periodontal disease only (HR 1.19, 95% CI 0.98-1.46) were associated with higher risk of invasive bladder cancer. The highest bladder cancer risk was observed in men with a history of both peptic ulcer and periodontal disease (HR 1.52, 95% CI 1.05-2.20). Similar results were found when we stratified by ulcer types. The interactions between ulcer and periodontal disease were not statistically significant for all ulcer types (p-interaction ≥ 0.59). CONCLUSION We did not find sufficient evidence for interaction between gastric/duodenal ulcers and periodontal disease on bladder cancer risk.

Abstract
AIMS This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effect of nutritional intervention in the management of periodontitis. METHODS This study was registered on the Prospective International Registry of Systematic Reviews-PROSPERO, under the registration number CRD42017076674. The database searching was performed on: Pubmed, Scopus, Web of Science, Clinical Trials and Lilacs. The OpenGrey and Google Scholar were also assessed for searching the grey literature. The PICO framework was carried out, in which the participants (P) were humans with periodontitis receiving conventional periodontal therapy simultaneously with dietary supplements (I), compared (C) with those managed with conventional therapy only, having as an outcome (O) the influence-or not influence-of nutritional intervention in the management of periodontitis. After the searching, duplicates were removed and articles were first assessed by title and abstract, following the inclusion and exclusion criteria; then, the full text of the remaining articles were reviewed. All steps within the review process were performed independently by two reviewers and checked by a third-party disagreement evaluator. For quality/risk of bias assessment of the study selection, The Cochrane Collaboration's tool for randomized studies and Robins-TOOL for non-randomized studies (ROBINS-I) were performed. The Grading of recommendations, assessment, development and evaluation (GRADE) was used for assessing the level of evidence. RESULTS A total of 2574 citations were recorded, but only four were considered eligible. The included studies reported different nutritional interventions such as fruit concentrate, vegetables and fruit juice powders, multivitamins, fish oil, and a customized dietary advice. The three studies using nutritional supplements showed improvements in at least one clinical parameter of periodontitis -reduction of probing depths, attachment gain, crevicular fluid decreased, reduced bleeding values on probing-after 2-6 months. Although, only two articles presented a moderate risk of bias, a very low level of evidence was found among the four studies taken together. CONCLUSIONS Despite the results suggested that nutritional intervention is beneficial for periodontal therapy, the evidence in general, is inconsistent and imprecise. More interventional studies with longer periods of follow-up and the assessment of a specific nutritional intervention must be conducted.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyze dental comorbidities in untreated primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT). Patients with pHPT subjected to parathyroidectomy (PTX) at Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, during 2011-2016 (n = 982) were selected from the Scandinavian Quality Register of Thyroid, Parathyroid and Adrenal surgery and compared to a general population cohort (n = 2944), matched for age and gender. Dental data was obtained from the Swedish Dental Health Registry for the 3 years prior to PTX. The incidence rate ratios (IRRs) of tooth loss by extraction, periodontal interventions, and dental visit rate were analyzed by Poisson regression models. In order to analyze the impact of disease severity, the PHPT cohort was sub-grouped based on preoperative serum levels of ionized calcium (S-Ca2+). The total number of tooth extractions, periodontal interventions, and number of visits were similar in the cohorts. PHPT patients belonging to the quartile with the highest S-Ca2+ (≥ 1.51 mmol/L) had increased risk for tooth extraction (IRR 1.85; 95% CI 1.39-2.46). Female gender independently amplified the risk (IRR 1.341, P < 0.027). This study indicates an association between pHPT and oral disorders reflected by increased tooth loss by extraction related to high S-Ca2. Increased awareness of dental comorbidity in primary hyperparathyroidism may benefit a large group of patients with a common disease through earlier detection and prevention.

Abstract
PURPOSE Evaluate periodontal status of acromegalics through clinical and biochemical variables. METHODS Demographics, hormone and metabolic variables, periodontal variables, gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) volume, and content data were collected from 30 patients with acromegaly, 30 patients with periodontitis, and 20 healthy subjects and comparatively analyzed. RESULTS GH differences between acromegaly (2.56 ± 4.86) and periodontitis (0.53 ± 0.95) (p < 0.001) were statistically significant. IGF-1 was lowest at periodontitis (113.31 ± 45.01) and lower (152.11 ± 45.56) at healthy group compared with acromegalics (220.38 ± 167.62) (p < 0.05). GH and IGF-1 had positive correlation (p < 0.05). IGF-1 and CAL had negative (p < 0.01) correlation except healthy group that showed the same correlation at the opposite direction (p < 0.05). Besides similar plaque and gingival indices with periodontitis, acromegalics showed relatively less CAL and GCF volume but except CAL, all their periodontal variables were higher than healthy subjects. GCF GH and prolactin showed higher values in acromegalics while healthy subjects showed relatively high interleukin-1, -10 and carboxyterminal telopeptide of type I collagen compared with others. CONCLUSION Acromegalics have a tendency of slowed periodontal destruction with an influence of GH and IGF-1 to the inflammation- and collage metabolism-related mechanisms rather than bone-associated ones. However, this information must be confirmed with further studies exploring the mechanisms possibly bonded to others.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Dental rehabilitation of patients with alveolar-dental cleft sequelae is a crucial issue in the final stages of functional and aesthetic management of these patients. The objectives of this study are to establish the success of implant-supported rehabilitations for patients with alveolar dental cleft sequelae followed in the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery and Stomatology of Lille University Hospital and the reasons for not using this type of rehabilitation for others. MATERIALS AND METHOD Patients treated between January 2009 and December 2018 with implant-supported prostheses at an alveolar dental cleft site were included. Dental implants were placed after a complementary alveolar bone graft. Clinical and radiological criteria regarding periodontal, occlusal and prosthetic status were studied. RESULTS A total of 12 implants in 8 patients were placed. One of these implants was lost, resulting in an implant survival rate of 91.7%. All patients were able to benefit from functional rehabilitation. DISCUSSION The present results demonstrate the interest and reliability of implant rehabilitation in these patients. They furthermore highlight financial factors as a barrier to using this solution among the majority of patients in care.

Abstract
Dendrimers are hyperbranched nanoparticle structures along with its surface modifications can to be used in dental biomaterials for biomimetic remineralisation of enamel and dentin. The review highlights the therapeutic applications of dendrimers in the field of dentistry. It addresses the possible mechanisms of enhancement of mechanical properties of adhesives and resins structure. Dendrimers due to its unique construction of possessing inner hydrophobic and outer hydrophilic structure can act as drug carrier for delivery of antimicrobial drugs for treatment of periodontal diseases and at peripheral dental implant areas. Dendrimers due to its hyperbranched structures can provides a unique drug delivery vehicle for delivery of a drug at specific site for sustained release for therapeutic effects. Thus, dendrimers can be one of the most important constituents which can be incorporated in dental biomaterials for better outcomes in dentistry.

Abstract
Human oral cavity (mouth) hosts a complex microbiome consisting of bacteria, archaea, protozoa, fungi and viruses. These bacteria are responsible for two common diseases of the human mouth including periodontal (gum) and dental caries (tooth decay). Dental caries is caused by plaques, which are a community of microorganisms in biofilm format. Genetic and peripheral factors lead to variations in the oral microbiome. It has known that, in commensalism and coexistence between microorganisms and the host, homeostasis in the oral microbiome is preserved. Nonetheless, under some conditions, a parasitic relationship dominates the existing situation and the rise of cariogenic microorganisms results in dental caries. Utilizing advanced molecular biology techniques, new cariogenic microorganisms species have been discovered. The oral microbiome of each person is quite distinct. Consequently, commonly taken measures for disease prevention cannot be exactly the same for other individuals. The chance for developing tooth decay in individuals is dependent on factors such as immune system and oral microbiome which itself is affected by the environmental and genetic determinants. Early detection of dental caries, assessment of risk factors and designing personalized measure let dentists control the disease and obtain desired results. It is necessary for a dentist to consider dental caries as a result of a biological process to be targeted than treating the consequences of decay cavities. In this research, we critically review the literature and discuss the role of microbial biofilms in dental caries.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Invasive cervical resorption (ICR), a commonly misdiagnosed condition, is an aggressive form of external tooth resorption that contributes to periodontal tissue inflammation and deepening of the periodontal pockets. Herein we report the case of a patient, exhibiting ICR and elaborate the effects of a non-surgical approach in the amelioration of this condition.
CASE SUMMARY A 21-year-old female reporting intermittent pain at the upper left side, multiple restorations, no trauma history, and having received orthodontic treatment was studied. Localized erythematous swelling was noted at the buccal interdental papilla between the left maxillary first molar and second premolar. The diseased pulp and tissue in resorption were removed and the root canal system including the defect were sealed using gutta percha/AH Plus and mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). At the one-year recall, the tooth showed no symptoms and responded normally to percussion and palpation. The surrounding periodontium exhibited a normal color and the probing depth was normal. Radiographic examination showed a restoration of crestal alveolar bone and good adaption to MTA.
CONCLUSION Non-surgical root canal treatment in conjunction with resorption defect orthograde repair with MTA was found to be an effective treatment option in the elimination of ICR. Early diagnoses are recommended in order to employ non-surgical approaches for management of ICR instead of surgical interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To review the literature on the effect of dental implant surface roughness in patients with a history of periodontal disease. The present review addresses the following focus question: Is there a difference for implant survival, mean marginal bone loss, and the incidence of bleeding on probing in periodontally compromised patients receiving a machined dental implant or rough surface dental implant? METHODS Electronic and manual literature searches were conducted on PubMed/MEDLINE and the Cochrane Library on studies published until May 2018 to collect information about the effect of machined, moderately rough, and rough dental implant surfaces in patients with a history of periodontal disease. The outcome variables implant survival, mean marginal bone level, and the incidence of peri-implantitis and bleeding on probing were evaluated. Meta-analysis was performed to obtain an accurate estimation of the overall, cumulative results. RESULTS Out of 2411 articles, six studies were included in this systematic review. The meta-analysis of the implant survival and implant mean marginal bone loss revealed a risk ratio of 2.92 (CI 95% 0.45, 18.86) for implant failure and a total mean difference of - 0.09 (CI 95% - 0.31, 0.14) for implant mean marginal bone loss measured in a total group of 215 implants, both not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS Due to lack of long-term data (> 5 years), the heterogeneity and variability in study designs and lack of reporting on confounding factors, definitive conclusions on differences in implant survival, and mean marginal bone loss between machined and moderate rough implants in periodontally compromised patients cannot be drawn. Future well-designed long-term randomized controlled trials are necessary to reveal that machined surfaces are superior to moderately rough and rough surfaces in patients with a history of periodontal disease.

Abstract
Alveolar ridge deformities can be caused by several factors. Managing alveolar deformities prior to implant placement is essential to increase bone width, height or both. Several techniques and materials are now available to perform ridge augmentation procedures. The postoperative exposure of the membrane is the most frequent postoperative complications of ridge augmentation procedures. The present case describes the horizontal ridge augmentation procedure and the outcome of surgical attempt to manage post-operative membrane exposure, and shows the unpredictability of managing postoperative membrane exposure surgically.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Restoring lost tissues of the periodontium, such as cementum, is essential in reducing the risk of tooth loss due to periodontitis and/or severe root resorption. Stem cell therapy is a regenerative strategy in cementum regeneration. This systematic review aimed to analyze the effect of various stem cells and their transplantation method on cementum regeneration in the dog model. METHODS Electronic databases were searched, in addition to performing hand searches and a gray literature search. Titles and abstracts were searched according to the inclusion criteria and full texts were selected to be included in this systematic review. Data was extracted from each article and risk of bias was assessed for individual studies. RESULTS Most studies reported that the treatment using a variety of stem cells resulted in significantly greater cementum regeneration. CONCLUSIONS Because of variations in additional factors included in each study and varied risk of bias among those studies, the effect of each type of stem cell on cementum regeneration in dogs is difficult to clarify. Additional information needs to be obtained from each study in order to further analyze the individual effect of stem cells on cementum regeneration in dogs.

Abstract
NOD-like receptors (NLRs) play a large role in regulation of host innate immunity, yet their role in periodontitis remains to be defined. NLRX1, a member of the NLR family that localizes to mitochondria, enhances mitochondrial ROS (mROS) generation. mROS can activate the NLRP3 inflammasome, yet the role of NLRX1 in NLRP3 inflammasome activation has not been examined. In this study, we revealed the mechanism by which NLRX1 positively regulates ATP-induced NLRP3 inflammasome activation through mROS in gingival epithelial cells (GECs). We found that depletion of NLRX1 by shRNA attenuated ATP-induced mROS generation and redistribution of the NLRP3 inflammasome adaptor protein, ASC. Furthermore, depletion of NLRX1 inhibited Fusobacterium nucleatum infection-activated caspase-1, suggesting that it also inhibits the NLRP3 inflammasome. Conversely, NLRX1 also acted as a negative regulator of NF-κB signaling and IL-8 expression. Thus, NLRX1 stimulates detection of the pathogen F. nucleatum via the inflammasome, while dampening cytokine production. We expect that commensals should not activate the inflammasome, and NLRX1 should decrease their ability to stimulate expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-8. Therefore, NLRX1 may act as a potential switch with regards to anti-microbial responses in healthy or diseased states in the oral cavity.

Abstract
Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) has been used in regenerative medicine and dentistry. Recently, its use has been advocated for regenerative periodontics and wound healing. The randomized control trials have assessed the regenerative efficacy of the PRF for restoring intrabony periodontal defects. The objectives are to critically analyze and appraise the currently available literature, focusing on the use of PRF in regenerating periodontal bone defects. An electronic search was conducted (PubMed/MEDLINE, Google Scholar, ISI-WOS). Various combinations of following keywords were used: 'platelet-rich fibrin', 'intrabony', 'periodontal', 'bone defect' and 'guided tissue regeneration'. A secondary search was conducted by analyzing the reference lists of the articles obtained in initial search. The final search resulted in 13 randomized controlled trials being included. In majority of studies, PRF resulted in better clinical/radiographic outcomes than open flap debridement and augmented therapeutic effects of bone grafts. The combination of bovine bone substitutes and PRF resulted in better performance compared to alone. Similarly better outcomes were observed while using PRF in combination with nanohydroxyapatite, metformin and demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft. It can be concluded that PRF produces better outcomes than open flap debridement alone and augments the regenerative effects of bone substitutes.

Abstract
Background Modern imaging techniques such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have the advantage of producing images without superimposition. Whilst CT is a well-established technique for dental diagnostics, MRI examinations are rarely used for the evaluation of dental diseases in horses. Regarding equine endodontic therapies which are increasingly implemented, MRI could help to portray changes of the periodontal ligament and display gross pulpar anatomy. Knowledge of age-related changes is essential for diagnosis, as cheek teeth and surrounding structures alter with increasing age. The aim of the present study was to highlight the advantages of CT and MRI regarding age-related changes in selected equine cheek teeth and their adjacent structures. Results The CT and MRI appearances of the maxillary 08 s and 09 s and adjacent structures were described by evaluation of post-mortem examinations of nine horses of different ages (Group A: <6 years, B: 6–15 years, C: ≥16 years). Most of the tissues selected were imaged accurately with MRI and CT. Magnetic resonance imaging gives an excellent depiction of soft endo- and periodontal units, and CT of hard dental and bony tissues. Negative correlation between dental age and pulpar sizes was found: 71.3% of the changes in pulp dimensions can be explained by teeth aging. Pulpar sizes ranged from 14.3 to 1.3 mm and were significantly smaller in older horses (p < 0.05). A common pulp chamber was present in 33% of the teeth with a mean dental age of 2.25 years. Ninety-four percent of the 08 and 09 alveoli of all groups were in direct contact with the maxillary sinus. An age-related regression was found (R2 = 0.88) for the distance between alveoli and the infraorbital canal. Conclusions The present study provides information about the dental and periodontal age-related morphology and its visibility using different imaging techniques. These results aid in evaluating diagnostic images and in deciding which is the superior imaging modality for clinical cases.

Abstract
Palatogingival groove (PGG) is an anomaly in the maxillary anterior teeth, often accompanied by the area of bony destruction adjacent to the teeth with no carious or traumatic history. The hidden trap in the tooth can harbor plaque and bacteria, resulting in periodontal destruction with or without pulpal pathologic change. Related diseases can involve periodontal destruction, combined endodontic-periodontal lesions, or separate endodontic and periodontal lesions. Disease severity and prognosis related to PGG depend on several factors, including location, range, depth, and type of the groove. Several materials have been used and recommended for cases of extensive periodontal destruction from PGG to remove and block the inflammatory source and recover the health of surrounding periodontal tissues. Even in cases of severe periodontal destruction, several studies have reported favorable treatment outcomes with proper management. With new options in diagnosis and treatment, clinicians need a detailed understanding of the characteristics, treatment, and prognosis of PGG to successfully manage the condition.

Abstract
An electrospun degradable polycarbonate urethane (PCNU) nanofiber scaffold loaded with antibiotic was investigated in terms of antibacterial efficacy and cell compatibility for potential use in gingival tissue engineering. Antimicrobial oligomer (AO), a compound which consists of two molecules of ciprofloxacin (CF) covalently bound via hydrolysable linkages to triethylene glycol (TEG), was incorporated via a one-step blend electrospinning process using a single solvent system at 7 and 15% w/w equivalent CF with respect to the PCNU. The oligomeric form of the drug was used to overcome the challenge of drug aggregation and burst release when antibiotics are incorporated as free drug. Electrospinning parameters were optimized to obtain scaffolds with similar alignment and fiber diameter to non-drug loaded fibers. AO that diffused from the fibers was hydrolysed to release CF slowly and in a linear manner over the duration of the study, whereas scaffolds with CF at the same concentration but in free form showed a burst release within 1h with no further release throughout the study duration. Human gingival fibroblast (HGF) adhesion and spreading was dependent on the concentration and form the CF was loaded (AO vs. free CF), which was attributed in part to differences in scaffold surface chemistry. Surface segregation of AO was quantified using surface-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). These findings are encouraging and support further investigation for the use of AO as a means of attenuating the rapid release of drug loaded into nanofibers. The study also demonstrates through quantitative measures that drug additives have the potential to surface-locate without phase separating from the fibers, leading to fast dissolution and differential fibroblast cell attachment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The regeneration of periodontal tissues lost as a consequence of destructive periodontal disease remains a challenge for clinicians. Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) has emerged as the most widely practiced regenerative procedure. Aim of this study was to electrospin chitosan (CH) membranes with a low or high degree of fiber orientation and examines their suitability for use as a surface layer in GTR membranes, which can ease integration with the periodontal tissue by controlling the direction of cell growth. METHODS A solution of CH-doped with polyethylene oxide (PEO) (ratio 95:5) was prepared for electrospinning. Characterization was performed for biophysiochemical and mechanical properties by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, swelling ratio, tensile testing and monitoring degradation using pH analysis, weight profile, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy and FTIR analysis. Obtained fibers were also assessed for viability and matrix deposition using human osteosarcoma (MG63) and human embryonic stem cell-derived mesenchymal progenitor (hES-MP) cells. RESULTS Random and aligned CH fibers were obtained. FTIR analysis showed neat CH spectral profile before and after electrospinning. Electropsun mats were conducive to cellular attachment and viability increased with time. The fibers supported matrix deposition by hES-MPs. Histological sections showed cellular infiltration as well. SIGNIFICANCE The surface layer would act as seal to prevent junctional epithelium from falling into the defect site and hence maintain space for bone regeneration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder that affects 1 % of the world's population, including 600,000 people in France. Persons with schizophrenia (PWS) have excess mortality (their life expectancy is reduced by 20 %) and excess morbidity. In addition, such persons may have a large number of missing or decayed teeth. Dental caries and periodontal measurement indexes are often twice as high as the level found in the general population. Poor oral health can also affect quality of life and oral health is inseparable from general health. The management of oral health problems needs a multidisciplinary approach. According to the World Health Organization, the aim of therapeutic education (TE) is to help patients take care of themselves and to improve empowerment and recovery. In this educational approach, it is important to take into account the patient's personal experience. Though rarely investigated, the personal experience of PWS in oral health quality of life (OHRQoL) must be used to build a therapeutic educational programme in oral health (TEPOH) in a multidisciplinary approach, and the effectiveness of this program must be evaluated. METHODS/DESIGN We report the protocol of a randomized controlled cluster study. This study will be conducted in twelve hospitals in France. We hypothesized that a decrease of 20 % in the proportion of patients with CPI ≥ 3 would establish the effectiveness of TEPOH. Therefore, 12 hospitals will be randomly allocated to either TEPOH or no TEPOH. Altogether, they will have to recruit 230 PWS, who will be randomly allocated with a ratio of 1:1 to one of two conditions: control without intervention versus the group benefitting from TEPOH. DISCUSSION If successful, the study will generate methodologically sound results that provide knowledge on the effectiveness of a TEP in oral health for PWS. The results can be used to promote OHRQoL in a global health approach and develop appropriate strategies to encourage and facilitate financial support for healthcare, the multidisciplinary treatment of dental disorders, and the development of training in oral and mental health for caregivers.
