Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the factors associated with suicidal ideation in schizophrenia patients in China using decision tree and logistic regression models. From October 2020 to March 2022, patients with schizophrenia were chosen from Chifeng Anding Hospital and Daqing Third Hospital in Heilongjiang Province. A total of 300 patients with schizophrenia who met the inclusion criteria were investigated by questionnaire. The questionnaire covered general data, suicidal ideation, childhood trauma, social support, depressive symptoms and psychological resilience. Logistic regression analysis revealed that childhood trauma and depressive symptoms were risk factors for suicidal ideation in schizophrenia (OR = 2.330, 95%CI: 1.177 ~ 4.614; OR = 10.619, 95%CI: 5.199 ~ 21.688), while psychological resilience was a protective factor for suicidal ideation in schizophrenia (OR = 0.173, 95%CI: 0.073 ~ 0.409). The results of the decision tree model analysis demonstrated that depressive symptoms, psychological resilience and childhood trauma were influential factors for suicidal ideation in patients with schizophrenia (p < 0.05). The area under the ROC for the logistic regression model and the decision tree model were 0.868 (95% CI: 0.821 ~ 0.916) and 0.863 (95% CI: 0.814 ~ 0.912) respectively, indicating excellent accuracy of the models. Meanwhile, the logistic regression model had a sensitivity of 0.834 and a specificity of 0.743 when the Youden index was at its maximum. The decision tree model had a sensitivity of 0.768 and a specificity of 0.8. Decision trees in combination with logistic regression models are of high value in the study of factors influencing suicidal ideation in schizophrenia patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Theory of Mind (ToM) impairment has repeatedly been found in paranoid schizophrenia. The current study aims at investigating whether this is related to a deficit in ToM (undermentalizing) or an increased ToM ability to hyperattribute others' mental states (overmentalizing). METHODS Mental state attribution was examined in 24 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia (12 acute paranoid (APS) and 12 post-acute paranoid (PPS)) with regard to positive symptoms as well as matched healthy persons using a moving shapes paradigm. We used 3-T-functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to provide insights into the neural underpinnings of ToM due to attributional processes in different states of paranoid schizophrenia. RESULTS In the condition that makes demands on theory of mind skills (ToM condition), in patients with diagnosed schizophrenia less appropriate mental state descriptions have been used, and they attributed mental states less often to the moving shapes than healthy persons. On a neural level, patients suffering from schizophrenia exhibited within the ToM network hypoactivity in the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) and hyperactivity in the temporo-parietal junction (TPJ) as compared to the healthy sample. CONCLUSIONS Our results indicate both undermentalizing and hypoactivity in the MPFC and increased overattribution related to hyperactivity in the TPJ in paranoid schizophrenia, providing new implications for understanding ToM in paranoid schizophrenia.

Abstract
Introduction Metacognition is the ability to reflect on one's own cognitive processes, monitor and regulate them to enhance mental performance. Social cognition involves the capacity to perceive and respond to social cues from others. The study of metacognition and social cognition is an expanding research field in psychiatry. Both domains are related to neurocognition, symptoms and psychosocial functioning in schizophrenia. Understanding the relationship between social cognition and metacognition may be pivotal for enhancing the treatment of cognitive symptoms in schizophrenia. Methods We conducted a PRISMA systematic review and meta-analysis on quantitative studies comparing metacognition to social cognitive outcomes in adult outpatients with a schizophrenia spectrum disorder. Reports were retrieved from the Medline, ScienceDirect and PsycINFO databases up to July 13th, 2023. Risk of bias was assessed with the Cochrane tool. Results Our review included 1,036 participants across 17 reports, with 12 reports included in the meta-analysis. We found a significant positive correlation (r = 0.28, 95% CI: [0.14, 0.41]) between social cognition and metacognition. Subgroup analyses indicated that metacognition was specifically associated with theory of mind, attribution, and emotion processing. Different patterns of correlations were observed according to the assessment of metacognition and its subdimensions. Conclusion Despite discrepancies among the included studies, no publication bias was detected. The results suggest that metacognition and social cognition are distinct but related constructs. Those processes should be assessed and treated together, along with neurocognition, in schizophrenia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with schizophrenia in rural areas of China face severe delays in getting appropriate treatment due to poverty, transportation, and limited availability of mental healthcare services. However, the experiences of care-seeking among patients with delayed diagnosis and treatment in rural areas remain poorly understood, and it remains unclear how these experiences influence patients' medical mistrust or expectations of care. This study aims to fill that void. METHODS We applied a qualitative phenomenological method. Patients were recruited through purposive sampling at a psychiatric hospital in Harbin, China. Semi-structured, one-to-one interviews were conducted, guided by an interview outline. Thematic analysis was performed using Colaizzi's seven-step method. RESULTS Data saturation was achieved after interviewing 13 participants aged 21 to 53 years. Three themes with eight subthemes were identified: (i) Barriers to seeking care, (ii) Feelings for psychiatric treatment, and (iii) Demand for mental healthcare. Several factors that may impede the timely diagnosis and treatment were identified, including patients, physicians, and institutions. The participants described their feelings of adverse treatment experiences, as well as expectations arising from this process. It predominantly covers awareness of the disease, supportive access to care, and geographic accessibility of services. CONCLUSION Patients with delayed diagnosis and treatment in rural areas often have negative experiences and various needs for mental health services in the pursuit of effective treatments. Policymakers and health planners should seriously consider the current challenges in rural mental healthcare to develop comprehensive strategies for improving prehospital delays and medical experience for this group of patients.

Abstract
Insight is a continuous and multidimensional phenomenon, including awareness of having an illness, the presence of symptoms and accurate symptom attribution, the need for treatment, and the consequences of treatment. Good insight into illness is associated with better adherence to treatment, better cognitive, psychosocial, and vocational functioning along with less symptom severity, decreased relapses, and hospitalizations. Several tools are used for insight evaluation. We recruited 90 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia and analyzed the forms of 58 patients. The patients completed the VAGUS-SR (self-rated), Beck Cognitive Insight Scale, Knowledge About Schizophrenia Questionnaire, and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). Clinicians performed a mental status examination and completed the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, Schedule for the Assessment of Insight, VAGUS-CR (clinician-rated), Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia, and Clinical Global Impressions. We found that the level of insight evaluated using the VAGUS forms increased with knowledge regarding schizophrenia. Upon investigating the relationship between perceived social support and insight, we identified a relationship between VAGUS-CR and only significant other subscales of MSPSS, and between one of the VAGUS-SR scale sub-dimensions and significant other and total scores of MSPSS. Our findings also suggest that the VAGUS-SR and VAGUS-CR scales can be used to evaluate insight in Turkish populations. The positive relationship between perceived social support and insight emphasizes the importance of increasing social support through interventions aimed at improving insight. Our data also highlighted the value of psychoeducational studies in this patient group. Considering the multidimensional effects of insight on patients with schizophrenia, it would be beneficial to use scales such as VAGUS, which allow the insights of individuals to be evaluated in detail by both the clinician and the patient.

Abstract
This study aims to verify the mediating role of resilience between self-esteem and mental disability and to analyze the moderating role of gender in the relationship between resilience and mental disability in patients with schizophrenia. Patients with schizophrenia have been selected from Harbin Psychiatric (Baiyupao) Hospital and Daqing Third Hospital in Heilongjiang Province from January to December 2021. The study recruited a total of 220 patients with schizophrenia, including 120 males and 100 females to measure their self-esteem, resilience and mental disability. The results were as follows: Self-esteem and resilience are important protective factors that have a buffering effect on mental disability. The mediating effect of resilience on self-esteem and mental disability is stronger in males than in females. The results provide new ideas for delaying mental disability and for formulating intervention programs and applying them to clinical practice. The study indicates that psychiatric medical staff should not only treat the patients with schizophrenia psychotic symptoms but also improve their self-esteem and resilience through effective intervention to reduce the occurrence of mental disability.

Abstract
Background As a group with a high incidence of childhood trauma, the differential characteristics of resilience in schizophrenia and its relationship with childhood trauma are still unclear. Methods A total of 626 individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia were selected from four psychiatric hospitals in northern China. Childhood trauma and resilience were measured using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-short form (CTQ-SF) and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), respectively. Latent profile analysis (LPA) was used to identify the potential classes of resilience. A generalized additive mixed model (GAMM) and restricted cubic spline (RCS) was used to explore and determine the shape of the relationship between childhood trauma and resilience. Results Model fits of LPA showed three heterogeneous classes of resilience: moderate resilience levels (n = 312; 49.06%); high resilience levels (n = 171; 26.89%) and low resilience levels (n = 153; 24.06%). Resilience scores fluctuated depending on amount of exposure to childhood trauma. The GAMM results verified the non-linear relationship between resilience and childhood trauma, with an estimated degree of freedom higher than 1 (4.573) and p = 0.003. RCS fitted for ordinary least square (OLS) regression models determined a smooth continuous cubic curve of resilience across childhood trauma levels, and the two turning points of the curve line were 41.04 and 54.74 for childhood trauma. Discussion Our findings confirm the people-specific differences in the level of resilience in schizophrenia and describe the cubic curvilinear relationship between childhood trauma and resilience, which provides data support for mechanistic research and intervention in related fields.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS Previous studies have suggested links between clinical symptoms and theory of mind (ToM) impairments in schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD), but it remains unclear whether some symptoms are more strongly linked to ToM than others. STUDY DESIGN A meta-analysis (Prospero; CRD42021259723) was conducted to quantify and compare the strength of the associations between ToM and the clinical symptoms of SSD (Positive, Negative, Cognitive/Disorganization, Depression/Anxiety, Excitability/Hostility). Studies (N = 130, 137 samples) including people with SSD and reporting a correlation between clinical symptoms and ToM were retrieved from Pubmed, PsycNet, Embase, Cochrane Library, Science Direct, Proquest, WorldCat, and Open Gray. Correlations for each dimension and each symptom were entered into a random-effect model using a Fisher's r-to-z transformation and were compared using focused-tests. Publication bias was assessed with the Rosenthal failsafe and by inspecting the funnel plot and the standardized residual histogram. STUDY RESULTS The Cognitive/Disorganization (Zr = 0.28) and Negative (Zr = 0.24) dimensions revealed a small to moderate association with ToM, which was significantly stronger than the other dimensions. Within the Cognitive/Disorganization dimension, Difficulty in abstract thinking (Zr = 0.36) and Conceptual disorganization (Zr = 0.39) showed the strongest associations with ToM. The association with the Positive dimension (Zr = 0.16) was small and significantly stronger than the relationship with Depression/Anxiety (Zr = 0.09). Stronger associations were observed between ToM and clinical symptoms in younger patients, those with an earlier age at onset of illness and for tasks assessing a combination of different mental states. CONCLUSIONS The relationships between Cognitive/Disorganization, Negative symptoms, and ToM should be considered in treating individuals with SSD.

Abstract
Empathy is the ability to generate emotional responses (i.e., cognitive empathy) and to make cognitive inferences (i.e., affective empathy) to other people's emotions. Empirical evidence suggests that patients with bipolar disorder (BD) exhibit impairment in cognitive empathy, but findings on affective empathy are inconsistent. Few studies have examined the neural mechanisms of cognitive and affective empathy in patients with BD. In this study, we examined the empathy-related resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in BD patients. Thirty-seven patients with BD and 42 healthy controls completed the self-report Questionnaires of Cognitive and Affective Empathy (QCAE), the Yoni behavioural task, and resting-sate fMRI brain scans. Group comparison of empathic ability was conducted. The interactions between group and empathic ability on seed-based whole brain rsFC were examined. BD patients scored lower on the Online Simulation subscale of the QCAE and showed positive correlations between cognitive empathy and the rsFC of the dorsal Medial Prefrontal Cortex (dmPFC) with the lingual gyrus. The correlations between cognitive empathy and the rsFC of the temporal-parietal junction (TPJ) with the fusiform gyrus, the cerebellum and the parahippocampus were weaker in BD patients than that in healthy controls. These findings highlight the underlying neural mechanisms of empathy impairments in BD patients.

Abstract
Poor cognitive insight, including low self-reflectiveness and high self-certainty, contributes to poor clinical insight, which includes awareness of illness, relabelling of specific symptoms, and treatment compliance. However, inconsistent results regarding cognitive insight among individuals at clinical high risk of psychosis (CHR) have been reported. This study investigated the difference in cognitive insight among groups with different severity of positive symptoms and analysed the effect of cognitive insight on clinical insight in each group. All participants, including CHR individuals with 3 or 4 points (L-Pitem, n = 85) and 5 points (H-Pitem, n = 37) on any positive-symptom item of the Scale of Prodromal Syndromes, and patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP, n = 59), were measured cognitive and clinical insight using the Beck Cognitive Insight Scale and the Schedule of Assessment of Insight, respectively. The self-reflectiveness of cognitive insight was highest in the L-Pitem group and lowest in the FEP group. Self-reflectiveness was positively associated with awareness of illness in the L-Pitem and FEP groups; both self-reflectiveness and self-certainty was positively associated with treatment compliance in the L-Pitem group. Improving self-reflectiveness of cognitive insight may conduce to good clinical insight. Self-certainty may have different implication to individuals with mild prodromal symptoms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Cognitive insight refers to the ability to distance oneself from and evaluate one's own beliefs and interpretations. Little is known about whether cognitive insight could influence medication adherence in schizophrenia patients. This study examined the role of cognitive insight in medication adherence and how it would interact with neuropsychological functions. METHODS Ninety clinically-stable schizophrenia patients completed the Beck's Cognitive Insight Scale (BCIS) and tasks measuring prospective (PM) and other neurocognitive functions. Medication adherence was estimated using a multi-axial method comprising interview, clinician-rating, pharmacy refill record and pill counting. Correlational and regression analyses were conducted to examine whether cognitive insight and PM would be associated with mediation adherence. Post-hoc mediational analysis was performed to examine the interplay between cognitive insight, PM and medication adherence. RESULTS Clinical insight and cognitive insight together significantly influenced participants' medication adherence, after neurocognitive functions and psychopathology were accounted for. Time-based PM, compared with other neurocognitive functions, affected medication adherence more strongly. CONCLUSIONS Cognitive insight complements clinical insight in affecting medication adherence in schizophrenia patients.

Abstract
This study aimed to explore the relationships among clinical insight, subjective memory complaints, and objective memory performance in patients with schizophrenia. We recruited 205 patients with schizophrenia and 221 healthy controls in this study. The participants were administered a subjective-report scale on memory (the Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire), and several objective memory tasks measuring verbal memory, visual memory, and working memory. Clinical insight was measured with an item in the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale. We found that when patients with schizophrenia were divided into subgroups with good and poor insight, both subgroups showed impairment in memory performance compared with controls. The schizophrenia patients with good insight reported similar memory complaints as controls whereas patients with poor insight reported less memory complaints than did the controls. These findings suggest that clinical insight may be related to subjective memory complaints, but not objective memory performance.

Abstract
Background:
Schizophrenia is a severe mental disability disorder that affects all life aspects,
including life functioning, general well-being, and overall life skills resulting in prominent impairments
in life functioning.
Objectives:
The objective of the study was to assess life skills and disabilities and its correlates among
Jordanian patients with schizophrenia.
Methods:
A cross-sectional correlational design was used. A convenience sampling technique was
used to recruit 250 hospitalized patients with schizophrenia. Data were collected using a questionnaire
that consisted of demographic variables, Life Skills Profile, Global Assessment of Functioning, and
Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale.
Results:
The level of disability in life skills was 89.23. The highest disability level was observed in
social contact and in communication domains, and the lowest level was in the responsibility domain.
The disability levels regarding family history of psychiatric illness, marital and employment status,
and the number of previous hospitalizations were statistically different (p < .05). The presence of negative
symptoms, global assessment of functioning, psychopathology symptoms, duration of treatment,
and positive symptoms were identified as predictors of the disability in life skills and accounted for
65% of the total variance.
Conclusions:
Planning and conducting life skills programs that help enhance the communication and
social interaction are required to improve life skills.

Abstract
Background: This study examines whether cognitive insight is impaired in high-risk individuals with attenuated psychotic symptoms (APS) and explores the relationship between cognitive and clinical insight at different durations of untreated attenuated psychotic symptoms (DUAPS). Methods: The Structured Interview for Psychosis high-risk Syndrome (SIPS) was used to identify APS individuals. APS (n = 121) and healthy control (HC, n = 87) subjects were asked to complete the Beck Cognitive Insight Scale (BCIS). Clinical insight of APS individuals was evaluated using the Schedule for Assessment of Insight (SAI). APS individuals were classified into four subgroups based on DUAPS, including 0-3, 4-6, 7-12, and >12 months. Power analysis for significant correlation was conducted using the WebPower package in R. Results: Compared with HC subjects, APS individuals showed poorer cognitive insight, with lower scores on BCIS self-reflectiveness and composite index (BCIS self-reflectiveness minus BCIS self-certainty). Only when DUAPS was longer than 12 months did the significant positive correlation between cognitive and clinical insight obtain the power about 0.8, including the associations between self-reflectiveness and awareness of illness, self-reflectiveness and the total clinical insight, and composite index and awareness of illness. The positive associations of composite index with awareness of illness within 0-3 months DUAPS and with the total score of SAI when DUAPS > 12 months were significant but failed to obtain satisfactory power. Conclusions: APS individuals may have impaired cognitive insight, demonstrating lower self-reflectiveness. The correlation between cognitive and clinical insight is associated with the duration of untreated attenuated psychotic symptoms.

Abstract
Poor insight exists in all phases of schizophrenia and is associated with poor clinical prognosis and adverse psychosocial functioning. This is a meta-analysis examining the prevalence of poor insight and its correlates in Chinese patients with schizophrenia. Both major international (PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and Web of Science) and Chinese (WANFANG and CNKI) databases were systematically searched. The pooled prevalence of poor insight was calculated using the random-effects model. A total of 19 studies with 3112 schizophrenia patients were included. The prevalence of poor insight was 43.4% (95%CI: 36.0%-51.2%). Subgroup and meta-regression analyses revealed that the higher prevalence of poor insight was significantly associated with single-site design, smaller sample size, inpatient status, acute illness phase, higher male proportion, younger age, shorter duration of illness, lower study quality, and earlier publication year. Poor insight is common in Chinese schizophrenia patients. Considering the negative outcomes of poor insight, regular screening and effective psychosocial interventions should be delivered for this vulnerable population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a paucity of studies examining the interrelationship between internalized stigma, cognitive insight, illness severity, and functioning. AIMS This study examined the dynamics of the relationship between these factors using a path modelling approach. METHODS Two hundred and seven patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders were recruited in this cross-sectional study. Patients were assessed on internalized stigma, cognitive insight (including its two domains, self-reflectiveness and self-certainty), illness severity and functioning. Path analysis was used to test the hypothesized model for the interrelationship between the variables. RESULTS A direct positive association was observed between self-certainty and internalized stigma. This was also observed via the paths running through illness severity and functioning. Self-reflectiveness was only associated with self-certainty in the model. The residual variance of internalized stigma in the path model was relatively high. CONCLUSION Our findings highlight that self-certainty is associated with internalized stigma along with illness severity and functioning in individuals with schizophrenia. Therefore, interventions on reduction of internalized stigma may benefit from a multipronged approach targeting self-certainty, illness severity and functioning. The relatively high residual variance of internalized stigma in the model highlights the need for further research to provide better understanding on the mechanisms underlying internalized stigma.

Abstract
The current study aimed to examine the impact of theory of mind (ToM) deficits on body image delusionality in anorexia nervosa (AN) while accounting for the effect of other cognitive functions. ToM and other cognitive functions were assessed in 46 patients with AN and 42 healthy controls. We used the Brown Assessment of Beliefs Scale to assess the degree of delusionality of body image beliefs in AN patients. Delusional body image beliefs were identified in 26.1% and overvalued ideas in 30.4% of the AN patients. Moderate but significant associations were found between impairments in ToM-overall capacity, cognitive and affective components-and body image delusionality. The effect of overall ToM performance on delusionality remained significant after controlling for other cognitive factors. General intelligence was also significantly associated with delusionality. Our findings support the notion that difficulties in taking the perspective of others contribute to insight impairment in AN. Further investigation is required to examine the effect of failures in social cognition and metacognition on insight in AN.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The underlying mechanism between hope and quality of life is as yet unknown. We aim to examine the potential mediating effect of depression and resilience and the moderated effect of sex in this well-established association. METHODS Two hundred seven patients diagnosed with schizophrenia were administered a questionnaire battery that measured hope, depression, resilience and QOL. A multiple mediation model was used to examine the mediating effect of resilience and depression on the association between hope and QOL. A subgroup analysis was performed and a moderated mediation model was examined to find and test the moderated effect of sex on the mediation model. We used Mplus to perform moderation and mediation analyses so that the mediators and moderator could function together in the same model. RESULT Sex was the moderator on the direct path between hope and QOL. The relationship between hope and QOL was mediated by resilience and depression in both sexes. When compared with female patients, the effect of hope on QOL was completely mediated by resilience and depression in males. In female patients, the model was partially mediated, and the direct effect of hope on QOL was significantly negatively correlated with the level of hope. CONCLUSION We present a conceptual model containing the mediated effects of resilience and depression and the moderated effect of sex between hope and QOL, which we believe facilitates the understanding of these associations. This model should be useful in the formulation of strategies to improve QOL.

Abstract
This study assesses how insight influences depression and Quality of Life (QOL) in schizophrenia-spectrum outpatients and whether depression modifies the relationship between insight and QOL. 141 patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorders with stable disease completed the EUROQOL-5D-5L and SQLS-R4, SAI-E and Calgary scales. Univariate and multivariate linear regression models were fitted to assess whether insight was related to QOL and/or depression. Higher levels of insight were (inversely) only related to EuroQOL-health but showed no relationship with depression. Depression showed an inversely strong relationship with EuroQOL-health. The relationship between clinical insight and QOL does not seem to be associated with depression.

Abstract
Social interaction is closely associated with both functional capacity and well-being. Previous research has not only revealed evidence of social dysfunction in individuals with a wide range of psychiatric and neurological disorders but also generated an abundance of potential measures for assessing social cognition. This review explores the most popular measures used within neuropsychiatric populations to investigate the ability to recognize or reason about the mental states of others. Measures are also critically analyzed in terms of strengths and limitations to aid task selection in future clinical studies. The most frequently applied assessment tools use verbal, visual or audiovisual forms of presentation and assess recognition of mental states from facial features, self-rated empathy, the understanding of other's cognitive mental states such as beliefs and intentions, or the ability to combine knowledge of other's thoughts and emotions in order to understand subtle communications or socially inappropriate behavior. Key weaknesses of previous research include limited investigation of relationships with clinical symptoms, and underutilization of measures of everyday social functioning that offer a useful counterpart to traditional "lab" tasks. Future studies should aim to carefully select measures not only based on the range of skills to be assessed but also taking into account potential difficulties with interpretation and the need to gain insight into the application of social cognitive skills as well as ability per se. Some of the best measures include those with well-matched control trials (e.g., Yoni Task) or those that restrict the influence of verbal deficits (e.g., intentions comic strip task), elicit spontaneous mentalizing (e.g., Animations Task), and possess greater ecological validity (e.g., Movie for the Assessment of Social Cognition). Social cognitive research within psychiatric populations will be further enhanced through the development of more closely matched control tasks, and the exploration of relationships between task performance, medication, strategy use, and broader emotional and motor functions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although Theory of Mind (ToM) impairment has been observed in patients with a wide range of mental disorders, the similarity and uniqueness of these deficits across diagnostic groups has not been thoroughly investigated. METHODS We recruited 35 participants with schizophrenia (SCZ), 35 with bipolar disorder (BD), 35 with major depressive disorder (MDD), and 35 healthy controls in this study. All participants were matched in age, gender proportion and IQ estimates. The Yoni task, capturing both the cognitive and affective components of ToM at the first- and second-order level was administered. Repeated-measure ANOVA and MANOVA were conducted to compare the group differences in ToM performance. A network was then constructed with ToM performances, psychotic and depressive symptoms, and executive function as nodes exploring the clinical correlates of ToM. RESULTS Overall, ToM impairments were observed in all patient groups compared with healthy controls, with patients with SCZ performing worse than those with BD. In second-order conditions, patients with SCZ and MDD showed deficits in both cognitive and affective conditions, while patients with BD performed significantly poorer in cognitive conditions. Network analysis showed that second-order affective ToM performance was associated with psychotic and depressive symptoms as well as executive dysfunction, while second-order affective ToM performance and negative symptoms showed relatively high centrality in the network. CONCLUSIONS Patients with SCZ, MDD and BD exhibited different types and severity of impairments in ToM sub-components. Impairment in higher-order affective ToM appears to be closely related to clinical symptoms in both psychotic and affective disorders.

Abstract
Impairments in social cognition may reflect dysfunction of disorder specific or disorder general mechanisms. Although cross-disorder comparison may prove insightful, few studies have compared social cognition in different neuropsychiatric disorders. Parallel investigation of schizophrenia and Tourette syndrome (TS) is encouraged by similarities including the presence of problematic social behavior, echophenomena, emotional dysregulation and dopamine dysfunction. Focusing on tests of social cognition administered in both disorders, this review aims to summarize behavioral, neurophysiological and neuroimaging findings, before exploring how these may contribute to clinical symptoms. Studies investigating social cognition (imitation, emotion recognition, and understanding of beliefs or intentions) in patients with schizophrenia or TS were identified through Web of Science and PubMed searches. Although findings indicate that social cognitive deficits are more apparent in schizophrenia, adults with TS can exhibit similar task performance to patients with paranoia. In both disorders, behavioral and neuroimaging findings raise the possibility of increased internal simulation of others' actions and emotions, in combination with a relative under-application of mentalizing. More specifically, dysfunction in neurobiological substrates such as temporo-parietal junction and inferior frontal gyrus may underlie problems with self-other distinctions in both schizophrenia and TS. Difficulties in distinguishing between actions and mental states linked to the self and other may contribute to a range of psychiatric symptoms, including emotional dysregulation, paranoia, social anhedonia and socially disruptive urges. Comparing different patient populations could therefore reveal common neuro-cognitive risk factors for the development of problematic social behaviors, in addition to markers of resilience, coping strategies and potential neuro-compensation mechanisms.

Abstract
Poor insight in schizophrenia is prevalent across cultures and phases of illness. In this review, we examine the recent research on the relationship of insight with behavior, mood and perceived quality of life, on its complex roots, and on the effects of existing and emerging treatments. This research indicates that poor insight predicts poorer treatment adherence and therapeutic alliance, higher symptom severity and more impaired community function, while good insight predicts a higher frequency of depression and demoralization, especially when coupled with stigma and social disadvantage. This research also suggests that poor insight may arise in response to biological, experiential, neuropsychological, social-cognitive, metacognitive and socio-political factors. Studies of the effects of existing and developing treatments indicate that they may influence insight. In the context of earlier research and historical models, these findings support an integrative model of poor insight. This model suggests that insight requires the integration of information about changes in internal states, external circumstances, others' perspectives and life trajectory as well as the multifaceted consequences and causes of each of those changes. One implication is that treatments should, beyond providing education, seek to assist persons with schizophrenia to integrate the broad range of complex and potentially deeply painful experiences which are associated with mental illness into their own personally meaningful, coherent and adaptive picture.

Abstract
Poor insight in schizophrenia has been associated with executive dysfunction and deficits in general cognitive ability. The overall outcome of available neurocognitive studies suggests that there is a significant but modest relationship between cognitive deficits and poor insight in schizophrenia. However, social cognitive abilities, particularly, theory of mind (ToM), might also play a role in poor insight in schizophrenia. A novel meta-analysis of the relationship between ToM and insight in schizophrenia was conducted. Current meta-analysis included 16 studies including 1085 patients with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. There was a significant association between ToM and clinical insight (r=0.28, CI=0.20-0.36). By contrast, there was no significant relationship between ToM and cognitive insight. Current findings suggest that there is a small but significant relationship between ToM and clinical insight in schizophrenia. ToM impairment is one of the factors contributing to poor insight in schizophrenia.
