Abstract
BACKGROUND Schizophrenia (SCZ) shortens life expectancy, with cardiovascular disease (CVD) as the leading cause of death. The links between psychiatric symptoms, cognitive function and CVD are unclear, and sex differences in this relationship are understudied. This study examined the relationship between clinical characteristics and 10-year cardiovascular risk in males and females with SCZ. METHODS This study included 802 patients with chronic SCZ. Fasting venous blood samples were collected from all patients to measure relevant glycolipid metabolic indices. The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was used to assess psychiatric symptoms. Cognitive function was evaluated using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS). The Framingham risk score (FRS) was used to estimate the 10-year CVD risk. RESULTS The mean 10-year cardiovascular risk for all patients was 11.76 ± 8.99%. Among patients with SCZ, 52.8% exhibited an intermediate-high 10-year cardiovascular risk. Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that FRS increased with higher body mass index, blood pressure, glucose, total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, while it was inversely related to high density lipoprotein levels. The general psychopathological scores were negatively associated with FRS (male: B = - 0.086, P = 0.013; female: B = - 0.056, P = 0.039). Negative symptom (B = - 0.088, P = 0.024) and total PANSS scores (B = - 0.042, P = 0.013) showed a negative association with FRS only in males. Additionally, in patients over 60 years old, general psychopathology (B = - 0.168, P = 0.001) and PANSS total scores (B = - 0.057, P = 0.041) were associated with reduced FRS, while immediate memory (B = 0.073, P = 0.025) was associated with higher FRS. CONCLUSION Patients with SCZ have an elevated risk of developing CVD, with males showing a higher 10-year cardiovascular risk than females. Significant sex differences exist in the relationship between the FRS and psychiatric symptoms, with negative symptoms being negatively related to FRS only in males.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a globally prevalent, severe chronic mental disorder, with cognitive dysfunction being one of its core symptoms. Notably, overweight is exceedingly common among individuals with SCZ, and overweight can also impact cognitive function. Therefore, the relationship between overweight and cognition in SCZ is a clinical issue that is in need of research attention. METHODS This study enrolled 77 patients with SCZ, including 36 overweight and 41 non-overweight patients. The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was used to assess symptom severity, while cognitive functions were evaluated using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS). Electroencephalography (EEG) testing was performed, with power spectral analysis conducted across various frequency bands (δ, θ, α, β, low γ, and high γ). RESULTS Compared to non-overweight SCZ patients, those overweight exhibited significantly lower RBANS total and index scores in immediate memory, visuospatial/constructional abilities, and delayed memory. EEG spectral analysis revealed that overweight SCZ patients demonstrated significantly lower oscillation power ratios in the β, low γ, and high γ frequency bands compared to their non-overweight counterparts. Correlation analyses indicated a significant positive relationship between β wave activity and RBANS total scores among overweight SCZ patients, suggesting that reduced β power correlates with more severe cognitive dysfunction. CONCLUSION Our findings indicate that overweight SCZ patients experience more severe cognitive impairments in a resting state than those who are not overweight, with significant differences in EEG spectrum observed in the β and γ frequency bands. Additionally, our study establishes a correlation between various EEG spectrum dimensions and cognition. This research highlights the effects of overweight on cognition in individuals with SCZ. Additionally, employing EEG technology to study cognitive function in overweight SCZ patients can offer valuable electrophysiological insights.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral function deterioration attributed to ageing and medications is one of the main contributory factors of dysphagia. Therefore, oral health management is essential in older patients with schizophrenia. However, no previous studies have evaluated the oral function in patients with schizophrenia. OBJECTIVE We surveyed patients with schizophrenia to identify factors associated with ageing-related variations in oral function. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 34 male patients diagnosed with schizophrenia who were hospitalised at a psychiatric hospital between July and September 2021 and underwent a screening examination during dental care. The survey items included basic information, oral hygiene information, oral (oral diadochokinesis [ODK] and tongue pressure), physical function, and nutritional status. Thirty-six male community-dwelling older individuals were included as controls, and their outcomes were compared with those of patients with schizophrenia. RESULTS Compared with healthy older adults, patients with schizophrenia demonstrated significantly lower teeth numbers, ODK, and calf circumference (CC) (p < .05). Multiple regression analysis revealed that ODK was associated with age and schizophrenia (p < .05). Conversely, tongue pressure was associated with CC (p < .05), suggesting different factors' association with the parameters indicating decreased oral function. CONCLUSIONS Our study findings suggest that older patients with schizophrenia have decreased tongue pressure and generalised muscle mass, highlighting the need to manage oral function. Interventions for tongue pressure were more strongly associated with muscle mass and could be easier to manage than those with disease-dependent changes in ODK. Abstract
Background Schizophrenia is among the world's top 10 causes of long-term disability with symptoms that lead to major problems in social and occupational functioning, and in self-care. Therefore, it is important to investigate the efficacy of complementary treatment options for conventionally used antipsychotic medication, such as physical training, and psychosocial interventions. Objective To combine aerobic and strength training with cognitive, emotional and social stimulation in one intervention for people with schizophrenia and test the feasibility and effects of this intervention. Methods The study is a mixed-method randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effects of a 12-week intervention for adults with schizophrenia. The treatment group (30 participants) will receive the intervention in addition to standard care and the control group (30 participants) only standard care. The intervention consists of 24 biweekly sessions with a duration of 60 min. The pre-test (weeks from 4 to 2 prior to the intervention) and post-test (week 12) include clinical measure (PANSS), quality of life, social performance, movement quantity, brain function and eye tracking measures. In addition, a treatment subgroup of 12-15 participants and their family member or other next of kin will complete a qualitative interview as a part of their post-test. Two follow-up tests, including clinical, quality of life, brain function and eye tracking will be made at 6 and 12 months from the completion of the intervention to both study groups. The primary outcome is change in negative symptoms. Secondary outcome measures include general and positive symptoms, quality of life, social performance, movement quantity, brain function and eye tracking. Explorative outcome includes patient and family member or other next of kin interview. Results Pilot data was collected by June 2023 and the main data collection will begin in September 2023. The final follow-up is anticipated to be completed by 2026. Conclusion The InMotion study will provide new knowledge on the feasibility, efficacy, and experiences of a novel intervention for adults with schizophrenia. The hypothesis is that regular participation in the intervention will reduce clinical symptoms, normalize physiological measures such as brain activation, and contribute to new active habits for the participants. Abstract
PURPOSE To find suggestions for a future definitive randomized control trial and examine the effects of physical exercise on neurocognition in schizophrenia. DESIGN AND METHODS Patients hospitalized with schizophrenia were randomly assigned to exercise (n = 5) or control (n = 17) groups. The experimental group performed an exercise regimen for 8 weeks. Following intervention, demographics, psychiatric symptoms, and neurocognitive functions were examined. FINDINGS The patients in the control and exercise groups, 14 and 4, respectively, showed significant differences in hospitalization duration and negative symptoms. After controlling both, neurocognition improved in the exercise group compared with the control group. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Mild-intensity physical exercise improves global neurocognition in schizophrenic inpatients and could lead to earlier release.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Walking is the fundamental component of taking steps and is the main form of physical activity among individuals with schizophrenia; it also offers a range of health benefits. This study aimed to examine the associations between daily steps and cognitive function and further explored how many steps were related to better cognitive function among inpatients with schizophrenia. METHODS Inpatients with schizophrenia were recruited from long-stay psychiatric wards across two hospitals (n=199 at site 1 and n=195 at site 2). Daily steps were collected with an accelerometer for 7 days. Four cognitive domains (attention, processing speed, reaction time, and motor speed) were tested at site 1, and two cognitive domains (attention and processing speed) were tested at site 2. The associations of daily steps and levels of steps/day with cognitive function were tested using multivariable linear regressions separated by site. Covariates included demographic variables, weight status, metabolic parameters, and clinical state. RESULTS Participants took an average of 7445 (±3442) steps/day. More steps were related to better attention, processing speed, reaction time, and motor speed after multivariable adjustments. Compared with participants taking <5000 steps/day, those taking ≥5000 steps/day showed significantly better processing speed. Participants taking ≥7500 steps/day were associated with better attention, better reaction time, and better motor speed than those taking <5000 steps/day. CONCLUSION Daily steps are associated with better cognitive function among inpatients with schizophrenia. The optimal benefit for cognitive function among this clinical population is achieving 7500 steps/day or more.

Abstract
Background: Patients with chronic schizophrenia present cognitive impairment, which affects their social function and prevents them from reintegrating into society. Yijinjing is a traditional Chinese aerobic exercise that has a putative psychosomatic effect on improving cognitive function. Methods: From January to May 2021, 40 patients with chronic schizophrenia were recruited and randomly divided into a control group and a Yijinjing group. In the 12-week intervention, the patients in the control group received conventional treatment, whereas patients in the Yijinjing group performed Yijinjing exercise (40 min/session, twice a week) in addition to receiving conventional treatment. The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), the Insight and Treatment Attitude Questionnaire (ITAQ), the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (SES), and the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) were used to measure clinical symptoms and cognitive function at 0, 6, and 12 weeks. Results: The demographic information was not significantly different between groups. At baseline, the scores of all the scales were not statistically different between groups. After 12 weeks of intervention, compared to those at baseline, the scores of the negative scale (t = 19.00, p < 0.0001), general psychopathology scale (t = 15.98, p < 0.0001), and total score (t = 15.47, p < 0.0001) of the PANSS and SES (t = 5.378, p < 0.0001) had significantly decreased, and the scores of the ITAQ (t = 7.984, p < 0.0001) and MMSE (t = 6.750, p < 0.0001) had significantly increased in Yijinjing group; the score of the MMSE increased in the control group as well (t = 2.491, p = 0.0222). Compared to the respective scores in the control group, the negative scale score (t = 2.953, p = 0.0054) significantly decreased, and the ITAQ (t = 3.043, p = 0.0042) and MMSE (t = 2.2.68, p = 0.0291) scores significantly increased in the Yijinjing group after 12 weeks of intervention. Conclusion: These results provide a preliminary indication that Yijinjing exercise had the potential to improve cognitive function and negative symptoms in patients with chronic schizophrenia. A larger-scale study to determine the trajectory of change in the longer term should be undertaken.

Abstract
The beneficial effects of a healthy sleep hygiene and regular physical activity have both been noted in improving psychopathology symptom severity. No study to date however, has evaluated the potential therapeutic effects of both sleep and exercise simultaneously in individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia. To examine the two variables concurrently, in the present report, patients with diagnoses of schizophrenia spectrum disorders (n = 64), were administered assessments that measured both their physical activity and sleep-related behaviors. Additionally, patients' symptom severity and cognitive and daily functioning abilities were also assessed. It was found sleep hygiene and physical activity were associated with patients' symptom severity and cognitive capacities, but not with their daily functioning abilities. Further, no interaction effects were found between sleep hygiene and physical activity. These results suggest that physical activity and sleep hygiene should be considered, independently, in their contribution to psychopathology.

Abstract
The present study was designed to examine whether different measures of physical fitness are differentially associated with white matter (WM) microstructure in older adults. Fifty-six healthy adults (mean age: 59.14 years) completed a standardized evaluation of physical fitness measurements (e.g., VO2peak , push-ups, abdominal sit-ups, sit-and-reach, t test, and vertical jump). Fractional anisotropy (FA), an index of WM microstructure, was assessed using diffusion tensor imaging. The findings indicated that the cardiorespiratory fitness was positively associated with FA in the right cingulum hippocampus and the left cerebral peduncle. However, other physical fitness metrics were not significantly associated with FA in any region. These results suggest that cardiorespiratory fitness, but not other metrics of fitness, might be sensitive to WM microstructure.

Abstract
Schizophrenia is a psychiatric disorder characterized by distortions of thinking and perception, with no strictly pathognomonic symptoms that can be divided into positive, negative, and cognitive symptom domains. People with schizophrenia have, between others, a reduced life expectancy and cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness and increased risk of cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, obesity, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia compared to the general population. Furthermore, the economic burden of mental disorders including schizophrenia is evident and it is expected to increase to more than double by 2030. Therefore, reducing the growing burden of mental disorders such as schizophrenia should be a health priority. Improved prevention and treatment are two key factors that may reduce the burden of schizophrenia. Pharmacological- and psychotherapy-based interventions have been traditionally considered for treating schizophrenia disorders; however, there is an increasing amount of scientific evidence confirming that physical activity and physical exercise should be highly considered in prevention and treatment of schizophrenia disorders. In this chapter, we aim to summarize and discuss the research progress of physical activity and exercise in prevention and treatment of schizophrenia disorder. Specifically, we summarized and discussed the research progress of the prognostic use of physical activity for incident schizophrenia; the importance of other outcomes typically improved by physical activity/exercise such as obesity and fitness (cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness) for future schizophrenia; the research progress of the evidence of the benefits of exercise in people with schizophrenia disorders differentiating between effects of exercise on varied health outcomes, cognitive functioning, and cardiorespiratory fitness; and finally the clinical practice recommendations.
