Gamma-irradiation applied in the synthesis of metallic and organic nanoparticles: A short review

Copper nanoparticle and point defect formation in Cu+-Na+ ion-exchanged glass using protons of 2 MeV energy

There are several applications for irradiating materials with protons that could provide alternative methodologies to synthesize and induce the formation of new compounds of different size scales. In this study, we explored the effects of proton irradiation oncommercial glass silicate that was previously subjected to a Cu+-Na+ ion exchange (IE) treatment at 600 °C for a duration of 60 min. The ion-exchanged glass samples were irradiated with protons (p+) of 2 MeV energy at doses in the range of thousands of grays (3.3 × 103, 7.9 × 103 Gy) and hundreds of thousands of grays (3.6 × 105 Gy). Significant changes in the optical and structural properties were observed post the radiation treatment. The UV-Visible absorption spectra of the irradiated samples revealed the appearance of overlapping absorption bands, which could be deconvoluted into three Gaussian-shaped bands peaking at 566, 620 and 680 nm. These three bands could be attributed to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of copper nanoparticles, non-bridging oxygen hole centers (NBOHCs) and self-trapped hole (STH) defects, respectively. Prominent photoluminescence (PL) was observed in the Cu-exchanged and irradiated samples, mainly induced by the presence of both Cu+ and Cu2O. Increasing the irradiation dose led to an increase in the PL intensity due to the conversion of Cu2+ ions into Cu+. This result was confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy that shows a decrease in the Cu2+ signal when increasing the dose of proton exposure. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM (TEM and HRTEM) observations confirmed the presence of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) in the doped and p+ irradiated Cu-exchanged glass silicate samples. These CuNPs were found to be crystalline with an average size of 12.39 nm.

Acoustic Shock Wave-Induced Solid-State Fusion of Nanoparticles: A Case Study of the Conversion of One-Dimensional Rod Shape into Three-Dimensional Honeycomb Nanostructures of CdO for High-Performance Energy Storage Materials

Herein, we describe the solid-state fusion of rod-shaped to honeycomb-shaped cadmium oxide particles (CdO NPs) caused by the process of repeated exposure to acoustic shock waves. Significant changes have been observed in structurally and morphologically dependent properties. For instance, at the 200-shocked condition, the high-pressure CdO-B2 phase is present as a secondary phase wherein all of the rod-shaped particles have been transformed into honeycomb-shaped CdO particles which possess comparatively higher specific-capacitance than CdO nanorods (NRs). The computed specific capacitance values for the 0, 100, and 200 shocked samples at a scan rate of 100 m V s-1 are computed to be 433, 415, and 583 F g-1, respectively. The second-stage decomposition temperature points of the CdO NPs have significantly increased in accordance with the morphological changes from rod to honeycomb patterns such that the values are 343, 526, and 534 °C, respectively, for 0, 100, and 200 shocked conditions. Note that such honeycomb nanostructured CdO particles by shock-wave processing have never been observed, to date. Due to the superior energy storage abilities as well as the spectacular high thermal stability of the honeycomb CdO nanostructures compared to CdO NRs, shocked CdO with honeycomb nanostructures can be considered as energy storage materials.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Adsorptive Characteristics of Radiation-Grafted Glycidyl Methacrylate Bamboo Fiber Composites

In the present study, a biosorbent was prepared through the radiation-induced graft polymerization (RIGP) technique by using a glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) monomer. Functionalized bamboo materials were used for grafting. The grafting percentage (G %) of GMA on bamboo fibers was assessed based on the optimization of the absorbed dose and concentration of the monomer. The chemical modification of the polymerized product into the sulfonated form of the grafted biopolymer was carried out by using sodium sulfite solution. The modification of the biopolymer at various stages was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. By performing scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the morphological changes of the prepared biopolymer were analyzed. The temperature stability of the synthesized material was assessed by the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) technique. The prepared sulfonated biosorbent was used in the batch adsorption study for the uptake of copper. We examined a variety of variables, including pH, adsorbent dosage, and time. The adsorption kinetics were studied using pseudo-first-order (PFO) and pseudo-second-order (PSO) models. Adsorption isotherms and thermodynamic parameters were also applied to study the adsorption capacity of the biosorbent. The maximum copper adsorption capacity was found to be 198 mg g-1 from the Langmuir isotherm. Copper adsorption followed PSO kinetics (R2 = 0.999). This inexpensive and eco-friendly biosorbent removed 96% of copper ions from the solution.

Gamma radiation effects on AG MP-50 cation exchange resin and sulfonated activated carbon for bismuth-213 separation

Medical 225Ac/213Bi radionuclide generators are designed to provide a local supply of the short-lived 213Bi for cancer treatment. However, radiation-induced damage to the sorbents commonly used in such radionuclide generators remains a major concern. In this study, the effects of gamma radiation on AG MP-50 cation exchange resin and sulfonated activated carbon (SAC) were studied by analyzing the changes in the morphological characteristics, functional groups, and the La3+/Bi3+ sorption performance, with La3+ being a suitable non-radioactive substitute for Ac3+. The surface sulfonic acid groups of AG MP-50 resin suffered from severe radiation-induced degradation, while the particle morphology was changed markedly after being exposed to absorbed doses of approximately 11 MGy. As a result, the sorption performance of irradiated AG MP-50 for La3+ and Bi3+ was significantly decreased with increasing absorbed doses. In contrast, no apparent changes in acquired morphological characteristics were observed for pristine and irradiated SAC based on SEM and XRD characterization. The surface oxygen content (e.g., O-C[double bond, length as m-dash]O) of irradiated SAC increased for an absorbed dose of 11 MGy due to free radical-induced oxidation. The sorption performance of pristine and irradiated SAC materials for La3+ and Bi3+ remained generally the same at pH values of 1 and 2. Furthermore, the applicability of AG MP-50 and SAC in the 225Ac/213Bi generators was illustrated in terms of their radiolytic stability. This study provides further evidence for the practical implementation of both AG MP-50 and SAC in 225Ac/213Bi radionuclide generators.

Gamma radiation-induced synthesis of novel PVA/Ag/CaTiO3 nanocomposite film for flexible optoelectronics

A flexible nanocomposite film based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), silver nanoparticles, and calcium titanate (CaTiO₃) was synthesized using gamma radiation induced-reduction. Temperature-dependent structural, optical, DC electrical conductivity, electric modulus, and dielectric properties of PVA/Ag/CaTiO₃ nanocomposite film were investigated. The XRD pattern proved the successful preparation of the nanocomposite film. Also, as the temperature increases, the average crystallite sizes of CaTiO₃ and Ag nanoparticles decrease from 19.8 to 9.7 nm and 25 to 14.8 nm, respectively. Further, the optical band gap increased from 5.75 to 5.84 eV with increasing temperature. The thermal stability is improved, and the semiconductor behavior for PVA/Ag/CaTiO₃ nanocomposite film is confirmed by thermal activation energy ΔE with values in the 0.11-0.8 eV range. Furthermore, the maximum barrier W_m value was found of 0.29 eV. PVA/Ag/CaTiO₃ nanocomposite film exhibits a semicircular arc originating from the material's grain boundary contributions for all temperatures. The optical, DC electrical conductivity, and dielectric properties of the PVA/Ag/CaTiO₃ nanocomposite film can be suitable for flexible electronic devices such as electronic chips, optoelectronics, and energy storage applications.

Gamma Radiation Synthesis of Ag/P25 Nanocomposites for Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Contaminant

Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) has garnered significant attention among various photocatalysts, whereas its photocatalytic activity is limited by its wide bandgap and inefficient charge separation, making the exploration of new strategies to improve its photocatalytic performance increasingly important. Here, we report the synthesis of Ag/P25 nanocomposites through a one-step gamma-ray radiation method using AgNO₃ and commercial TiO₂ (Degussa P25). The resulting products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, UV-Vis diffused reflectance spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The effect of free radical scavengers, feed ratios of Ag/P25, and dose rates on the photocatalytic activity of the Ag/P25 nanocomposites were systematically investigated using rhodamine B under Xenon light irradiation. The results showed that the Ag/P25 photocatalyst synthesized with a feed ratio of 2.5 wt% and isopropyl alcohol as the free radical scavenger at a dose rate of 130 Gy/min exhibited outstanding photocatalytic activity, with a reaction rate constant of 0.0674 min^-1, much higher than that of P25. Additionally, we found that the particle size of Ag could be effectively controlled by changing the dose rate, and the Ag/P25 nanocomposites doped with smaller size of Ag nanoparticles performed higher photocatalytic activities. The synthesis strategy presented in this study offers new insight into the future development of highly efficient photocatalysts using radiation techniques.

Radiation synthesis of MXene/Ag nanoparticle hybrids for efficient photothermal conversion of polyurethane films

Flexible conductive films based on light-to-heat conversion are promising for the next-generation electronic devices. A flexible waterborne polyurethane composite film (PU/MA) with excellent photothermal conversion performance was obtained by combination of PU and silver nanoparticle decorated MXene (MX/Ag). The silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) uniformly decorated on the MXene surface by γ-ray irradiation induced reduction. Because of the synergistic effect of MXene with outstanding light-to-heat conversion efficiency and the AgNPs with plasmonic effect, the surface temperature of the PU/MA-II (0.4%) composite with lower MXene content increased from room temperature to 60.7 °C at 5 min under 85 mW cm^-2 light irradiation. Besides, the tensile strength of PU/MA-II (0.4%) increased from 20.9 MPa (pure PU) to 27.5 MPa. The flexible PU/MA composite film shows great potential in the field of thermal management of flexible wearable electronic devices.

Metal-Polymer Nanocomposites: A Promising Approach to Antibacterial Materials

There has been a new approach in the development of antibacterials in order to enhance the antibacterial potential. The nanoparticles are tagged on to the surface of other metals or metal oxides and polymers to achieve nanocomposites. These have shown significant antibacterial properties when compared to nanoparticles. In this article we explore the antibacterial potentials of metal-based and metal-polymer-based nanocomposites, various techniques which are involved in the synthesis of the metal-polymer, nanocomposites, mechanisms of action, and their advantages, disadvantages, and applications.

Extractability of Rice Husk Waste Using Green Gamma Radiation for Dye Elimination in Laboratory-Scale Sorption System: Equilibrium Isotherm and Kinetic Analysis

Nowadays, the use of natural materials and especially "waste" valorization has evolved and attracted the wide attention of scientists and academia. In this regard, the use of rice husk (RH) powder as a naturally abundant and cheap byproduct material is gaining superior attention. However, improving the physicochemical properties of such RH is still under research. In the current investigation, the modification of rice husk (RH) via γ-irradiation has shown to be a promising green tool to meet such a need. Clean, prepared, powdered RH samples were subjected to various γ-radiation doses, namely 5, 10, 15 and 25 kGy, and the corresponding samples were named as RH-0, RH-5, RH-10, RH-15, RH-15 and RH-25. Then, the samples were characterized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). After irradiation, the samples showed an increase in their surface roughness upon increasing the γ-radiation up to 15 kGy. Furthermore, the sorption capacity of the irradiated RH samples was investigated for eliminating Urolene Blue (UB) dye as a model pharmaceutical effluent stream. The highest dye uptake was recorded as 14.7 mg/g, which corresponded to the RH-15. The adsorption operating parameters were also investigated for all of the studied systems and all adsorbents showed the same trend, of a superior adsorption capacity at pH 6.6 and high temperatures. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were also applied for UB adsorption and an adequate fitted isotherm model was linked with Langmuir fitting. Moreover, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model provided the best fit for the adsorption data. Experimental assays confirmed that the UB dye could be successfully eradicated feasibly from the aqueous stream via a sustainable green methodology.

Energetic Electron-Assisted Synthesis of Tailored Magnetite (Fe3O4) and Maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) Nanoparticles: Structure and Magnetic Properties

Iron oxide nanoparticles with a mean size of approximately 5 nm were synthesized by irradiating micro-emulsions containing iron salts with energetic electrons. The properties of the nanoparticles were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, selective area diffraction and vibrating sample magnetometry. It was found that formation of superparamagnetic nanoparticles begins at a dose of 50 kGy, though these particles show low crystallinity, and a higher portion is amorphous. With increasing doses, an increasing crystallinity and yield could be observed, which is reflected in an increasing saturation magnetization. The blocking temperature and effective anisotropy constant were determined via zero-field cooling and field cooling measurements. The particles tend to form clusters with a size of 34 nm to 73 nm. Magnetite/maghemite nanoparticles could be identified via selective area electron diffraction patterns. Additionally, goethite nanowires could be observed.

An Exploration of Nanoparticle-Based Diagnostic Approaches for Coronaviruses: SARS-CoV-2, SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV

The wildfire-like spread of COVID-19, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome-associated coronavirus-2, has resulted in a pandemic that has put unprecedented stress on the world's healthcare systems and caused varying severities of socio-economic damage. As there are no specific treatments to combat the virus, current approaches to overcome the crisis have mainly revolved around vaccination efforts, preventing human-to-human transmission through enforcement of lockdowns and repurposing of drugs. To efficiently facilitate the measures implemented by governments, rapid and accurate diagnosis of the disease is vital. Reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction and computed tomography have been the standard procedures to diagnose and evaluate COVID-19. However, disadvantages, including the necessity of specialized equipment and trained personnel, the high financial cost of operation and the emergence of false negatives, have hindered their application in high-demand and resource-limited sites. Nanoparticle-based methods of diagnosis have been previously reported to provide precise results within short periods of time. Such methods have been studied in previous outbreaks of coronaviruses, including severe acute respiratory syndrome-associated coronavirus and middle east respiratory syndrome coronavirus. Given the need for rapid diagnostic techniques, this review discusses nanoparticle use in detecting the aforementioned coronaviruses and the recent severe acute respiratory syndrome-associated coronavirus-2 to highlight approaches that could potentially be used during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Recent Trends in Magnetic Polymer Nanocomposites for Aerospace Applications: A Review

Polymers have had an enormous impact on science and technology, and their interest relating to the development of new macromolecular materials has exponentially increased. Polymer nanocomposites, materials based on a polymeric matrix covalently coupled to reinforcement, display properties of both components. In the aerospace industry, polymer nanocomposites are attractive due to their promising characteristics, among which lightness, mechanical and thermal resistance, radiation and corrosion resistance, and conductive and magnetic properties stand out. The use of them, instead of metal-based materials, has allowed the optimization of design processes and applications in order to provide safer, faster, and eventually cheaper transportation in the future. This comparative review collects the most relevant and prominent advances in the development of polymer nanocomposites with aerospace applications starting from basic aspects such as the definition of polymer nanocomposite to more specialized details such as synthesis, characterization, and applications, in addition to proposing new research branches related to this topic.

Nanoparticle and Nanostructure Synthesis and Controlled Growth Methods

Nanomaterials are materials with one or more nanoscale dimensions (internal or external) (i.e., 1 to 100 nm). The nanomaterial shape, size, porosity, surface chemistry, and composition are controlled at the nanoscale, and this offers interesting properties compared with bulk materials. This review describes how nanomaterials are classified, their fabrication, functionalization techniques, and growth-controlled mechanisms. First, the history of nanomaterials is summarized and then the different classification methods, based on their dimensionality (0-3D), composition (carbon, inorganic, organic, and hybrids), origin (natural, incidental, engineered, bioinspired), crystal phase (single phase, multiphase), and dispersion state (dispersed or aggregated), are presented. Then, the synthesis methods are discussed and classified in function of the starting material (bottom-up and top-down), reaction phase (gas, plasma, liquid, and solid), and nature of the dispersing forces (mechanical, physical, chemical, physicochemical, and biological). Finally, the challenges in synthesizing nanomaterials for research and commercial use are highlighted.

Metallic and Metal Oxides Nanoparticles for Sensing Food Pathogens—An Overview of Recent Findings and Future Prospects

Nowadays, special importance is given to quality control and food safety. Food quality currently creates significant problems for the industry and implicitly for consumers and society. The effects materialize in economic losses, alterations of the quality and organoleptic properties of the commercial products, and, last but not least, they constitute risk factors for the consumer’s health. In this context, the development of analytical systems for the rapid determination of the sanitary quality of food products by detecting possible pathogenic microorganisms (such as Escherichia coli or Salmonella due to the important digestive disorders that they can cause in many consumers) is of major importance. Using efficient and environmentally friendly detection systems for identification of various pathogens that modify food matrices and turn them into food waste faster will also improve agri-food quality throughout the food chain. This paper reviews the use of metal nanoparticles used to obtain bio nanosensors for the purpose mentioned above. Metallic nanoparticles (Au, Ag, etc.) and their oxides can be synthesized by several methods, such as chemical, physical, physico-chemical, and biological, each bringing advantages and disadvantages in their use for developing nanosensors. In the “green chemistry” approach, a particular importance is given to the metal nanoparticles obtained by phytosynthesis. This method can lead to the development of good quality nanoparticles, at the same time being able to use secondary metabolites from vegetal wastes, as such providing a circular economy character. Considering these aspects, the use of phytosynthesized nanoparticles in other biosensing applications is also presented as a glimpse of their potential, which should be further explored.

Gamma-Rays Induced Synthesis of Ag-Decorated ZnCo2O4–MoS2 Heterostructure as Novel Photocatalyst and Effective Antimicrobial Agent for Wastewater Treatment Application

The development of novel semiconductors-based-photocatalysts is a promising strategy for addressing environmental pollution. In the present study, gamma irradiation was utilized to induce the synthesis of the exceptionally efficient Ag-decorated ZnCo2O4–MoS2 heterostructure. XRD and EDX analyses were verified the successful synthesis of Ag-decorated ZnCo2O4–MoS2 heterostructure. Also, SEM and HR-TEM images were illustrated the heterostructure nature of the synthesized photocatalyst in the nanoscale regime. The obtained optical bandgap values verified that photocatalyst possesses a narrow semiconductor bandgap. Further, the Ag-decorated ZnCo2O4–MoS2 heterostructure exhibited superior photodegradation potential towards MB (95.4% removal of the MB). The antimicrobial potency of the synthesized samples had been investigated through ZOI, MIC, growth curve assay, and the effect of UV illumination. Also, the antibiofilm behaviour has been studied. The antibacterial reaction mechanism had been estimated by membrane leakage assay and SEM imaging. The tested samples displayed a positive potency to a broad spectrum of bacteria like Proteus mirabilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans. In particular, Ag–MoS2–ZnCo2O4 nanocomposite possessed the highest impact, followed by the spinal ZnCo2O4 NPs towards all the tested pathogenic microbes. In this assessment, the Ag-decorated ZnCo2O4–MoS2 heterostructure has been shown to be a promising candidate for wastewater treatment application.

Application of Metal Nanoparticles for Production of Self-Sterilizing Coatings

Metal nanoparticles (NPs) are increasingly being used in many areas, e.g., industry, pharmacy, and biomedical engineering. NPs can be obtained through chemical and biological synthesis or using physical methods. AgNPs, AuNPs, CuNPs, FeNPs, MgNPs, SnO2NPs, TiO2NPs, and ZnONPs are the most commonly synthesized metal nanoparticles. Many of them have anti-microbial properties and documented activity supported by many tests against some species of pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and fungi. AgNPs, which are used for the production of commercial self-sterilizing packages, are one of the best-explored nanoparticles. Moreover, the EFSA has approved the use of small doses of silver nanoparticles (0.05 mg Ag·kg−1) to food products. Recent studies have shown that metal NPs can be used for the production of coatings to prevent the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which has caused the global pandemic. Some nanoparticles (e.g., ZnONPs and MgONPs) have the Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) status, i.e., they are considered safe for consumption and can be used for the production of edible coatings, protecting food against spoilage. Promising results have been obtained in research on the use of more than one type of nanometals, which prevents the development of pathogen resistance through various mechanisms of inactivation thereof.

Dosimetric Performance of Poly(vinyl alcohol)/Silver Nanoparticles Hybrid Nanomaterials for Colorimetric Sensing of Gamma Radiation

A colorimetric liquid sensor based on a poly(vinyl alcohol)/silver nanoparticle (PVA/AgNPs) hybrid nanomaterial was developed for gamma radiation in the range of 0−100 Gy. In this study, gamma rays (Cobalt-60 source) triggered the aggregation of AgNPs in a PVA/silver nitrate (AgNO3) hybrid solution. The color of this solution visibly changed from colorless to dark yellow. Absorption spectra of the PVA/AgNPs solution were analyzed by UV-Vis spectrophotometry in the range of 350−800 nm. Important parameters, such as pH and AgNO3 concentration were optimized. The accuracy, sensitivity, stability, and uncertainty of the sensor were investigated and compared to the reference standard dosimeter. Based on the spectrophotometric results, an excellent positive linear correlation (r = 0.998) between the absorption intensity and received dose was found. For the accuracy, the intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) between the PVA/AgNPs sensor and the standard Fricke dosimeter was 0.998 (95%CI). The sensitivity of this sensor was 2.06 times higher than the standard dosimeter. The limit of detection of the liquid dosimeter was 13.4 Gy. Moreover, the overall uncertainty of this sensor was estimated at 4.962%, in the acceptable range for routine standard dosimeters (<6%). Based on its dosimetric performance, this new PVA/AgNPs sensor has potential for application as an alternative gamma sensor for routine dose monitoring in the range of 13.4−100 Gy.

Microbe-oriented nanoparticles as phytomedicines for plant health management: An emerging paradigm to achieve global food security

Biotic and abiotic environmental stresses affect the production and quality of agricultural products worldwide. The extensive use of traditional preventive measures comprising toxic chemicals has become more problematic due to severe ecotoxicological challenges. To address this issue, engineered nanoparticles (NPs) with their distinct physical and chemical properties has gained scientific attention and can help plants to confront environmental challenges. Despite their ameliorative and beneficial effects, toxicological concerns have been raised about NPs. The recent development of biogenic NPs (bio-NPs) is getting attention in agriculture due to their diverse biocompatibility, better functional efficacy, and eco-friendly nature compared to the recalcitrant NPs, providing a promising strategy for increased crop protection against biotic and abiotic environmental stresses, with the ultimate goal of ensuring global food security. This review summarizes the recent advances in the engineering of bio-NPs with particular emphasis on the functions of bio-NPs in protecting plants from biotic and abiotic environmental stresses, delivery and entry routes of NPs to plant systems, nanotoxicity, and plant physiological/biochemical responses to nanotoxicity. Future perspectives of bio-NP-enabled strategies, remaining pitfalls, and possible solutions to combat environmental challenges via advanced nanotechnology to achieve global food security and a sustainable agricultural system are also discussed.

Radiolytic synthesis and characterization of selenium nanoparticles: comparative biosafety evaluation with selenite and ionizing radiation

The goal of this work is use a green chemistry route to synthesize selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) that do not trigger oxidative stress, typical of metallic, oxide metallic and carbonaceous nanostructures, and supply the same beneficial effects as selenium nanostructures. SeNPs were synthesized using a radiolytic method involving irradiating a solution containing sodium selenite (Se⁴⁺) as the precursor in 1% Yeast extract, 2% Peptone, 2% Glucose (YPG) liquid medium with gamma-rays (⁶⁰Cobalt). The method did not employ any hazardous reducing agents. Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells were incubated with 1 mM SeNPs for 24 h and/or then challenged with 400 Gy of ionizing radiation were assessed for viability and biomarkers of oxidative stress: lipid peroxidation, protein carbonylation, free radical generation, and total sulfhydryl content. Spherical SeNPs with variable diameters (from 100 to 200 nm) were formed after reactions of sodium selenite with hydrated electrons (e_aq^-) and hydrogen radicals (H·). Subsequent structural characterizations indicated an amorphous structure composed of elemental selenium (Se⁰). Compared to 1 mM selenite, SeNPs were considered safe and less toxic to Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells as did not elicit significant modifications in cell viability or oxidative stress parameters except for increased protein carbonylation. Furthermore, SeNPs treatment afforded some protection against ionizing radiation exposure. SeNPs produced using green chemistry attenuated the reactive oxygen species generation after in vitro ionizing radiation exposure opens up tremendous possibilities for radiosensitizer development.

Photochemically driven solid electrolyte interphase for extremely fast-charging lithium-ion batteries

Extremely fast charging (i.e. 80% of storage capacity within 15 min) is a pressing requirement for current lithium-ion battery technology and also affects the planning of charging infrastructure. Accelerating lithium ion transport through the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) is a major obstacle in boosting charging rate; in turn, limited kinetics at the SEI layer negatively affect the cycle life and battery safety as a result of lithium metal plating on the electrode surface. Here, we report a γ-ray-driven SEI layer that allows a battery cell to be charged to 80% capacity in 10.8 min as determined for a graphite full-cell with a capacity of 2.6 mAh cm⁻². This exceptional charging performance is attributed to the lithium fluoride-rich SEI induced by salt-dominant decomposition via γ-ray irradiation. This study highlights the potential of non-electrochemical approaches to adjust the SEI composition toward fast charging and long-term stability, two parameters that are difficult to improve simultaneously in typical electrochemical processes owing to the trade-off relation.

State-of-art of silver and gold nanoparticles synthesis routes, characterization and applications: a review

To date, the noble metal-based nanoparticles have been used in every field of life. The Au and Ag nanoparticles (NPs) have been fabricated employing different techniques to tune the properties. In this study, the methodologies developed and adopted for the fabrication of Au and Ag have been discussed, which include physical, chemical and biological routes. The Au and Ag characteristics (morphology, size, shape) along with advantages and disadvantages are discussed. The Au and Ag NPs catalytic and biomedical applications are discussed. For the Ag and Au NPs characterization, SEM (scanning electron microscope), TEM (transmission electron microscope), FTIR (Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy), XRD (X-rays diffraction) and DLS (dynamic light scattering) techniques are employed. The properties of Au and Ag NPs found dependent to synthesis approach, i.e., the size, shape and morphologies, which showed a promising Catalytic, drug delivery and antimicrobial agent applications. The review is a comprehensive study for the comparison of Au and Ag NPs synthesis, properties and applications in different fields.

Synthesis, Chemical-Physical Characterization, and Biomedical Applications of Functional Gold Nanoparticles: A Review

Relevant properties of gold nanoparticles, such as stability and biocompatibility, together with their peculiar optical and electronic behavior, make them excellent candidates for medical and biological applications. This review describes the different approaches to the synthesis, surface modification, and characterization of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) related to increasing their stability and available features useful for employment as drug delivery systems or in hyperthermia and photothermal therapy. The synthetic methods reported span from the well-known Turkevich synthesis, reduction with NaBH4 with or without citrate, seeding growth, ascorbic acid-based, green synthesis, and Brust-Schiffrin methods. Furthermore, the nanosized functionalization of the AuNP surface brought about the formation of self-assembled monolayers through the employment of polymer coatings as capping agents covalently bonded to the nanoparticles. The most common chemical-physical characterization techniques to determine the size, shape and surface coverage of AuNPs are described underlining the structure-activity correlation in the frame of their applications in the biomedical and biotechnology sectors.

Engineered Bioactive Polymeric Surfaces by Radiation Induced Graft Copolymerization: Strategies and Applications

The interest in developing antimicrobial surfaces is currently surging with the rise in global infectious disease events. Radiation-induced graft copolymerization (RIGC) is a powerful technique enabling permanent tunable and desired surface modifications imparting antimicrobial properties to polymer substrates to prevent disease transmission and provide safer biomaterials and healthcare products. This review aims to provide a broader perspective of the progress taking place in strategies for designing various antimicrobial polymeric surfaces using RIGC methods and their applications in medical devices, healthcare, textile, tissue engineering and food packing. Particularly, the use of UV, plasma, electron beam (EB) and γ-rays for biocides covalent immobilization to various polymers surfaces including nonwoven fabrics, films, nanofibers, nanocomposites, catheters, sutures, wound dressing patches and contact lenses is reviewed. The different strategies to enhance the grafted antimicrobial properties are discussed with an emphasis on the emerging approach of in-situ formation of metal nanoparticles (NPs) in radiation grafted substrates. The current applications of the polymers with antimicrobial surfaces are discussed together with their future research directions. It is expected that this review would attract attention of researchers and scientists to realize the merits of RIGC in developing timely, necessary antimicrobial materials to mitigate the fast-growing microbial activities and promote hygienic lifestyles.

Antibacterial and antibiofilm activities of silver-decorated zinc ferrite nanoparticles synthesized by a gamma irradiation-coupled sol-gel method against some pathogenic bacteria from medical operating room surfaces

This work aimed at the gamma irradiation-assisted synthesis of silver (Ag)-decorated ZnFe2O4 (ZFO) ferrite nanoparticles (NPs), which were tested for their antibacterial and antibiofilm activities against some pathogenic bacteria from medical operating room surfaces. The prepared Ag-decorated ZFO NPs were characterized via XRD, SEM, EDX, elemental mapping, and FTIR analysis. The antibacterial potential was tested as ZOI and MIC, while antibiofilm activity was estimated by the tube method. The growth curve assay, the effect of UV on the antimicrobial activity, and cell membrane leakage were evaluated, and the antibacterial reaction mechanism was investigated by SEM/EDX analysis. The XRD and FTIR results confirmed the successful preparation of Ag-decorated ZFO NPs. Antibacterial results revealed that the most potent decorated sample was Ag0.75@ZFO NPs, recording the most significant inhibition zone against Staphylococcus vitulinus (24.67 ± 0.577 mm) and low MIC (0.097 μg mL-1) against S. vitulinus. The antibiofilm activity of Ag0.75@ZFO NPs was the highest, recorded as 97.3% for S. aureus and 95.25% for Enterococcus columbae. In the case of UV exposure, bacterial growth reached the lowest grade. Finally, it was seen that the amount of cellular protein released from bacterial cells is directly proportional to the concentration of Ag0.75@ZFO NPs, which clearly explains the formation of pits in the cell membrane. The synthesized nanocomposites may find an application after mixing with operating room paints to reduce the harmful effect of pathogenic microbes and, therefore, eliminate bacterial contamination.

When x-rays alter the course of your experiments

The continuing increase in the brilliance of synchrotron radiation beamlines allows for many new and exciting experiments that were impossible before the present generation of synchrotron radiation sources came on line. However, the exposure to such intense beams also tests the limits of what samples can endure. Whilst the effects of radiation induced damage in a static experiment often can easily be recognized by changes in the diffraction or spectroscopy curves, the influence of radiation on chemical or physical processes, where one expects curves to change, is less often recognized and can be misinterpreted as a 'real' result instead of as a 'radiation influenced result'. This is especially a concern in time-resolved materials science experiments using techniques as powder diffraction, small angle scattering and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. Here, the effects of radiation (5-50 keV) on some time-resolved processes in different types of materials and in different physical states are discussed. We show that such effects are not limited to soft matter and biology but rather can be found across the whole spectrum of materials research, over a large range of radiation doses and is not limited to very high brilliance beamlines.

Radiation-induced synthesis of copper sulfide nanotubes with improved catalytic and antibacterial activities

In the current paper, copper sulfide nanotubes have been successfully synthesized via the green, simple, and effective gamma-radiolysis method without adding any capping or reducing agents. The structural and morphological characteristics of the as-prepared CuS nanotubes were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N₂ adsorption-desorption measurements at 77 K, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, which all demonstrated the formation of pure CuS covellite phase with tubular morphology. The synthesized CuS nanotubes possessed not only high activity towards the reduction of both cationic (methylene blue) and anionic (Congo red) dyes in the presence of NaBH₄ but also exhibited excellent reusability. In addition, the pseudo-first-order kinetic model represented the reduction of MB very well, and the value of the normalized rate constant (2.4 × 10^-2 s^-1 mg^-1) was higher than those of other solid catalysts reported in the literature. Ultimately, CuS nanotubes were found to have a broad-spectrum microbicidal action against the common microbiota, such as Gram-positive (exemplified by Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus), Gram-negative bacteria (exemplified by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli), yeast (exemplified by Candida albicans), and plant pathogenic fungi (exemplified by Aspergillus niger).

Diversity-oriented synthesis through gamma radiolysis: Preparation of unusual ecdysteroid derivatives activating Akt and AMPK in skeletal muscle cells

Gamma-ray radiation is a unique way to induce chemical transformations of bioactive compounds. In the present study, we pursued this approach to the diversity-oriented synthesis of analogs of 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E), an abundant ecdysteroid with a range of beneficial, non-hormonal bioactivities in mammals including humans. Gamma irradiations of aqueous solutions of 20E were conducted either in N₂- or N₂O-saturated solutions. Centrifugal partition chromatography was used to fractionate crude resulting irradiated materials using a biphasic solvent system composed of tert-butyl alcohol - ethyl acetate - water (0.45:0.9:1, v/v/v) in ascending mode. Subsequently, the products were purified by RP-HPLC. Fourteen ecdysteroids, including five new compounds, were isolated, and their structure were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR and HRMS. Compounds 2-4, 7, 9, 12 and 15 were tested for their capacity to increase the Akt- and AMPK-phosphorylation of C2C12 murine skeletal myotubes in vitro. The compounds were similarly active on Akt as their parent compound. Stachysterone B (7) and a new ring-rearranged compound (12) were more potent than 20E in activating AMPK, indicating a stronger cytoprotective effect. Our results demonstrate the use of gamma irradiation in expanding the chemical diversity of ecdysteroids to obtain new, unusual bioactive metabolites.

Extended Nucleation and Superfocusing in Colloidal Semiconductor Nanocrystal Synthesis

Hot-injection synthesis is renowned for producing semiconductor nanocolloids with superb size dispersions. Burst nucleation and diffusion-controlled size focusing during growth have been invoked to rationalize this characteristic yet experimental evidence supporting the pertinence of these concepts is scant. By monitoring a CdSe synthesis in-situ with X-ray scattering, we find that nucleation is an extended event that coincides with growth during 15-20% of the reaction time. Moreover, we show that size focusing outpaces predictions of diffusion-limited growth. This observation indicates that nanocrystal growth is dictated by the surface reactivity, which drops sharply for larger nanocrystals. Kinetic reaction simulations confirm that this so-called superfocusing can lengthen the nucleation period and promote size focusing. The finding that narrow size dispersions can emerge from the counteracting effects of extended nucleation and reaction-limited size focusing ushers in an evidence-based perspective that turns hot injection into a rational scheme to produce monodisperse semiconductor nanocolloids.

Current Strategies for Noble Metal Nanoparticle Synthesis

Noble metals have played an integral part in human history for centuries; however, their integration with recent advances in nanotechnology and material sciences have provided new research opportunities in both academia and industry, which has resulted in a new array of advanced applications, including medical ones. Noble metal nanoparticles (NMNPs) have been of great importance in the field of biomedicine over the past few decades due to their importance in personalized healthcare and diagnostics. In particular, platinum, gold and silver nanoparticles have achieved the most dominant spot in the list, thanks to a very diverse range of industrial applications, including biomedical ones such as antimicrobial and antiviral agents, diagnostics, drug carriers and imaging probes. In particular, their superior resistance to extreme conditions of corrosion and oxidation is highly appreciated. Notably, in the past two decades there has been a tremendous advancement in the development of new strategies of more cost-effective and robust NMNP synthesis methods that provide materials with highly tunable physicochemical, optical and thermal properties, and biochemical functionalities. As a result, new advanced hybrid NMNPs with polymer, graphene, carbon nanotubes, quantum dots and core-shell systems have been developed with even more enhanced physicochemical characteristics that has led to exceptional diagnostic and therapeutic applications. In this review, we aim to summarize current advances in the synthesis of NMNPs (Au, Ag and Pt).

Radiation-Assisted Formation of Metal Nanoparticles in Molten Salts

Knowledge of structural and thermal properties of molten salts is crucial for understanding and predicting their stability in many applications such as thermal energy storage and nuclear energy systems. Probing the behavior of metal contaminants in molten salts is presently limited to either foreign ionic species or metal nanocrystals added to the melt. To bridge the gap between these two end states and follow the nucleation and growth of metal species in molten salt environment in situ, we use synchrotron X-rays as both a source of solvated electrons for reducing Ni²⁺ ions added to ZnCl₂ melt and as an atomic-level probe for detecting formation of zerovalent Ni nanoparticles. By combining extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis with X-ray absorption near edge structure modeling, we obtained the average size and structure of the nanoparticles and proposed a radiation-induced reduction mechanism of metal ions in molten salts.

Intelligent Poly(N-Isopropylmethacrylamide) Hydrogels: Synthesis, Structure Characterization, Stimuli-Responsive Swelling Properties, and Their Radiation Decomposition

Poly(N-isopropylmethacrylamide) (p(NiPMAm)) is one of the lesser known homopolymers that has significant potential for designing new "intelligent" materials. The aims of this work were the synthesis a series of cross-linked p(NiPMAm) hydrogels by the free radical polymerization method and the application of gamma-ray radiation for additional cross-linking. The synthesized p(NiPMAm) hydrogels were structurally characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The amount of unreacted monomers was analyzed using high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) to evaluate conversion of monomers into polymers. The swelling behavior was monitored in dependence of pH and temperature changes. The previous aim of gamma-ray radiation was the further the cross-linkage of the obtained hydrogel sample in the gelatinous, paste-like state, but the gamma-ray radiation caused decomposition. After absorbing irradiation doses, they transformed into the liquid phase. The results obtained by the gel permeation chromatography (GPC) method indicated that only oligomers and monomers were present in the irradiated liquid material, without molecules with a higher average molar mass, i.e., that the decomposition of the hydrogels occurred. Additionally, the irradiated liquid material was analyzed using the static headspace gas chromatography mass spectrometry (HSS-GC/MS) and gas chromatography/flame ionization detection (HSS-GC/FID) methods. The presence of unchanged initiator molecule and a dominant amount of four new molecules that were different from homopolymers and the reactant (monomer and cross-linker) were determined.

A Facile One-Pot Synthesis of Versatile PEGylated Platinum Nanoflowers and Their Application in Radiation Therapy

Nanomedicine has stepped into the spotlight of radiation therapy over the last two decades. Nanoparticles (NPs), especially metallic NPs, can potentiate radiotherapy by specific accumulation into tumors, thus enhancing the efficacy while alleviating the toxicity of radiotherapy. Water radiolysis is a simple, fast and environmentally-friendly method to prepare highly controllable metallic nanoparticles in large scale. In this study, we used this method to prepare biocompatible PEGylated (with Poly(Ethylene Glycol) diamine) platinum nanoflowers (Pt NFs). These nanoagents provide unique surface chemistry, which allows functionalization with various molecules such as fluorescent markers, drugs or radionuclides. The Pt NFs were produced with a controlled aggregation of small Pt subunits through a combination of grafted polymers and radiation-induced polymer cross-linking. Confocal microscopy and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy revealed that Pt NFs were localized in the cytoplasm of cervical cancer cells (HeLa) but not in the nucleus. Clonogenic assays revealed that Pt NFs amplify the gamma rays induced killing of HeLa cells with a sensitizing enhancement ratio (SER) of 23%, thus making them promising candidates for future cancer radiation therapy. Furthermore, the efficiency of Pt NFs to induce nanoscopic biomolecular damage by interacting with gamma rays, was evaluated using plasmids as molecular probe. These findings show that the Pt NFs are efficient nano-radio-enhancers. Finally, these NFs could be used to improve not only the performances of radiation therapy treatments but also drug delivery and/or diagnosis when functionalized with various molecules.
