Relationship between physical activity, sedentarism and obesity in adults, Colombia, 2015

Introduction. Physical inactivity and sedentary behaviors were shown to be risk factors in the prevalence of diseases such as obesity. Objective. To conduct an analysis of the relationship between physical activity, sedentary lifestyle and nutritional status in the population aged 18 to 64 years in Colombia, 2015. Materials and methods. A secondary analysis of the 2015 Colombian nutrition survey was done, using sociodemographic variables (age, sex, ethnicity, geographic area, region, wealth index), along with weight, height, physical activity and sedentary lifestyle. Proportions and 95% confidence intervals, chi-square, logistic regression and odds ratio were estimated. Results. The analyzed population included 16,607 individuals (54.8% women and 45.2% men) aged 18 to 64 years. Men were more overweight (37.6%) than women, while obesity was more frequent in women (22.1%). It was observed that 48.3% did not meet the physical activity recommendations; 56.9% of adults spent two or more hours a day watching screens. There was a significant association (p<0.050) between non-compliance with physical activity recommendations and obesity. In addition, complying with the physical activity recommendation decreases the probability of obesity by 1.25 times. Conclusion. Obesity is a health problem for the adult population, with a higher prevalence in women and in those over 30 years old. It is related to non-compliance with the recommendations about physical activity and sedentary behaviors (which are more prevalent in Afro-descendants), high wealth quartile status, and to reside in urban areas and to live in the Bogotá area.

Physical Activity and Prevalence of Depression and Antidepressants in the Spanish Population

Introduction: Depression is a mental disorder that affects more than 250 million people in the world, limiting their functional capacities. The work of public health policies is aimed at reducing its prevalence as well as its pharmaceutical cost. Physical activity (PA) programs are interventions with a high potential for effectiveness. Objectives: To establish the relationships between physical activity and the prevalence of depression and antidepressant intake in the Spanish population. Design: We performed a correlational study that was based on data from the European Health Survey Spain 2020 with 20,287 participants, aged 18–84 years, living in Spain. Results: Dependency relationships were found between the prevalence of depression, and: the frequency of PA, the number of days of PA per week, and the number of days of muscle strengthening in the population, in both sexes, and in all age groups (p < 0.001). Dependency relationships were found between the three PA variables and the prevalence of taking antidepressants (p < 0.001). An elevated prevalence of depression and antidepressant taking were found in the inactive groups compared to those who performed PA (p < 0.05). Conclusions: There is an inverse relationship between physical activity and the probability of suffering from depression and the intake of antidepressants. Performing PA 3–4 days/week, including 1–2 days of strength work, could be the best proposal to reduce the prevalence of depression in the Spanish population.

Influence of Confinement Due to COVID-19 on Physical Activity and Mediterranean Diet Adherence and Its Relationship with Self-Esteem in Pre-Adolescent Students

Regular physical activity and good adherence to the Mediterranean diet are important for improving physical and mental health. Confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a lack of exercise and poor nutrition. Preadolescent mental health, specifically regarding self-esteem, may have been affected. This is particularly relevant between the ages of 10 and 14. The influence of total confinement due to COVID-19 on physical activity and Mediterranean diet adherence, and its relationship with self-esteem was studied in third-year primary school students and first-year secondary school students in the provinces of Granada and Malaga, Spain. Validated questionnaires were administered to evaluate physical activity (PAQ-C), Mediterranean diet adherence (KIDMED) and self-esteem (Rosenberg Scale). In the same way, the FAS III test was used to evaluate socioeconomic status and an ad-hoc questionnaire was developed to collect sociodemographic data and evaluate screen time. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS 25.0 statistical software. During the period of total confinement, statistically significant differences were found between examined variables, according to sex, school year, school type, socioeconomic status and whether or not the participant had contracted COVID-19. These data were compared with those collected during a previous time period. Those with a low socioeconomic status and girls were most affected.

Entrenamiento intermitente de alta intensidad versus continuo en mujeres con hipertensión

Objetivo: comparar los efectos de la implementación de un programa de ejercicio continuo de mediana intensidad vs. un programa de ejercicio interválico de alta intensidad sobre los parámetros antropométricos y de condición física en mujeres hipertensas.Materiales y método: estudio experimental con pre y post prueba, realizado en 62 mujeres hipertensas divididas en 3 grupos: el primer grupo realizó ejercicio interválico de alta intensidad, el segundo hizo ejercicio continuo de mediana intensidad y el tercero es el grupo control. La intervención se realizó durante 12 semanas con una frecuencia semanal de 3 repeticiones. En todas las mujeres hipertensas se evaluó su condición física y características antropométricas.Resultados: posterior a la intervención, se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre el grupo HiiT (high intensity interval training) y el grupo control en cuanto a las variables porcentaje de grasa (p = 0,014), densidad corporal (p = 0,014) e índice de conicidad [IC] (p = 0,003). Adicionalmente, se identificaron diferencias entre los dos grupos de ejercicio y el grupo control en las variables distancia recorrida (p = 0,04), flexibilidad en miembro superior derecho (p = 0,00) y fuerza en miembros inferiores (p = 0,01).Conclusiones: el estudio demostró que el ejercicio es una herramienta efectiva para mejorar la aptitud física de mujeres hipertensas. Sin embargo, no se encontraron diferencias en la efectividad entre el entrenamiento interválico de alta intensidad y el entrenamiento continuo.
