Synthesis of chitosan/MCM-48 and β-cyclodextrin/MCM-48 composites as bio-adsorbents for environmental removal of Cd2+ ions; kinetic and equilibrium studies

Adsorption efficiency of chitosan/clinoptilolite (CS/CZ) composite for effective removal of Cd+2 and Cr+6 ions from wastewater effluents of dairy cattle farms

The wastewater effluent is responsible for the major ecological impact of the dairy sectors. To avoid the negative consequences of heavy metal pollution on the ecosystem, creative, affordable, and efficient treatment methods are now required before the effluent flows into the surrounding area. This study was aimed at assessing the effectiveness of three different adsorbents for Cd+2 and Cr+6 ions from wastewater effluents of dairy farms, including chitosan (CS), clinoptilolite zeolite (CZ), and chitosan/clinoptilolite zeolite (CS/CZ) composite. The adsorption kinetics of the CS/CZ composite were established using the effects of the key variables (pH, agitation speed, adsorbent concentrations, and contact durations). The removal (%) and adsorption capacities, qe (mg/g), were calculated using the data from the adsorption kinetics. Wastewater samples (n = 60) were collected from the wastewater effluents of five farms. Cd+2 and Cr+6 ion concentrations in all collected samples were determined. Following the CS/CZ composite creation, it was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (X-RD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectrum (FT-IR). The CS/CZ composite had an adsorption capacity of 92.4 and 96.5 mg/g for both Cd+2 and Cr+6 ions at a concentration of 2.0 g/100 ml, respectively, while the CZ adsorption capacities for the two ions were 87.5 mg/g and 61.0 mg/g, respectively, at 4.0 g/100 ml concentration. The CS was achieved at 55.56 mg/g and 33.3 mg/g, respectively, at the same concentration. The efficiency of heavy metal removal was enhanced by increasing adsorbent concentration, agitation speed, and contact duration. Using CS/CZ composite at 2.0 g/100 ml concentration, 180 min of contact time, and 300 rpm agitation speed, the greatest removal efficiencies for Cd+2 and Cr+6 ions (96.43 and 98.75%, respectively) were demonstrated.

Desalination RO reject brine as a novel-based porous geopolymer for phosphorus removal from contaminated media

Desalination reverse osmosis reject brine-based porous geopolymer (RO/GP) was produced and investigated as an improved adsorbent for phosphorus (P) removal from tainted seawater, brackish water, river water, and municipal wastewater effluent. The RO reject brine/geopolymer was produced by reacting metakaolin and fly ash with a Na-alkali activator and anhydrous RO brine as a sacrificial template. The influence of RO reject brine content on water absorption, porosity, mechanical, and structural properties were examined. The developed RO-based geopolymers exhibited the greatest porosity (58.3-84.2 % vol%), a significant ratio of open porosity to total porosity (67.7-92.1 %), and outstanding compression strength (3.6-10.4 MPa). The produced RO/GP structure has an adsorption capacity of 92.4 mg-P/g. The sequestration reaction of phosphorus by RO/GP is of pseudo-second-order kinetic behavior via Chi-squared (χ2), RMSE, and determination coefficient (R2) values. Regarding their agreement with Langmuir behavior, the phosphorus adsorption uptakes occur in homogeneous and monolayer states. The reaction is exothermic, spontaneous, and favorable. The RO/GP exhibits significant affinity for phosphorus co-existing with Cl-, Na+, SO42-, K+, HCO3-, and Ca2+. The RO/GP shows high safety during the adsorption investigation, with a total cost of 0.32 $/kg-P.

Characterization of chitosan- and β-cyclodextrin-modified forms of magnesium-doped hydroxyapatites as enhanced carriers for levofloxacin: loading, release, and anti-inflammatory properties

An advanced form of magnesium-rich hydroxyapatite (Mg·HAP) was modified with two types of biopolymers, namely chitosan (CH/Mg·HAP) and β-cyclodextrin (CD/Mg·HAP), producing two types of bio-composites. The synthesized materials were developed as enhanced carriers for levofloxacin to control its loading, release, and anti-inflammatory properties. The polymeric modification significantly improved the loading efficiency to 281.4 mg g-1 for CH/Mg·HAP and 332.4 mg g-1 for CD/Mg·HAP compared with 218.3 mg g-1 for Mg·HAP. The loading behaviors were determined using conventional kinetic and isotherm models and mathematical parameters of new equilibrium models (the monolayer model of one energy). The estimated density of effective loading sites (Nm (LVX) = 88.03 mg g-1 (Mg·HAP), 115.8 mg g-1 (CH/Mg·HAP), and 138.5 mg g-1 (CD/Mg·HAP)) illustrates the markedly higher loading performance of the modified forms of Mg·HAP. Moreover, the loading energies (<40 kJ mol-1) in conjunction with the capacity of each loading site (n > 1) and Gaussian energies (<8 kJ mol-1) signify the physical trapping of LVX molecules in vertical orientation. The addressed materials validate prolonged and continuous release behaviors. These behaviors accelerated after the modification procedures, as the complete release was identified after 160 h (CH/Mg·HAP) and 200 h (CD/Mg·HAP). The releasing behaviors are regulated by both diffusion and erosion mechanisms, according to the kinetic investigations and diffusion exponent analysis (>0.45). The entrapping of LVX into Mg·HAP induces its anti-inflammatory properties against the generation of cytokines (IL-6 and IL-8) in human bronchial epithelia cells (NL20), and this effect displays further enhancement after the integration of chitosan and β-cyclodextrin.

Steric, Synergetic, Energetic Studies on the Impact of the Type of the Hybridized Polymers (Chitosan and β-Cyclodextrin) on the Adsorption Properties of Zeolite-A for Congo Red Dye

Zeolite-A was synthesized successfully from kaolinite and hybridized with two species of biopolymers (chitosan (CH/Z) and β-cyclodextrin (CD/Z)). The obtained hybridized forms were assessed as potential adsorbents of Congo red synthetic dye (CR) with enhanced affinities and elimination capacities. The synthesized CD/Z and CH/Z hybrids demonstrated uptake capacities of 223.6 and 208.7 mg/g, which are significantly higher than single-phase zeolite-A (140.3 mg/g). The integrated polymers change the surface area, surface reactivity, and number of free active receptors that are already present. The classic isotherm investigations validate Langmuir equilibrium behavior for ZA and Freundlich properties for CD/Z and CH/Z. The steric parameters validate a strong increase in the existing active receptors after the incorporation of CD (CD/Z) to be 98.1 mg/g as compared to 83 mg/g for CH/Z and 60.6 mg/g for ZA, which illustrate the detected uptake behaviors. Synthesis and Characterization of Iron-Rich Glauconite Nanorods by a Facile Sonochemical Method for Instantaneous and Eco-friendly Elimination of Malachite Green Dye from Aquatic Environments

The kinetic assumption of the pseudo-first-order model (R2 > 0.94) and the classic isotherm of the Langmuir equilibrium model (R2 > 0.97) were used to describe the adsorption reactions. The steric investigation demonstrates that each active site on the surface of GNRs can adsorb up to three MG molecules (n = 2.19-2.48) in vertical orientation involving multimolecular mechanisms. The properties and entropy values, free enthalpy, and intern energy as the investigated thermodynamic functions declared the exothermic and spontaneous behaviors of the MP adsorption.

Advanced Equilibrium Studies for the Synergetic Impact of Polyaniline on the Adsorption of Rhodamine B Dye by Polyaniline/Coal Composite

Natural cyclodextrins (CDs) can be formed by 6, 7, or 8 glucose molecules (α-, β-, and γ-, respectively) linked in a ring, creating a cone shape. Its interior has an affinity for hydrophobic molecules, while the exterior is hydrophilic and can interact with water molecules. This feature has been used to develop active packaging applied to food, interacting with the product or its environment to improve one or more aspects of its quality or safety. It also provides monitoring information when food is optimal for consumption, as intelligent packaging is essential for the consumer and the merchant. Therefore, this review will focus on discerning which packaging is most appropriate for each situation, solubility and toxicological considerations, characterization techniques, effect on the guest properties, and other aspects related to forming the inclusion complex with bioactive molecules applied to packaging.

Characterization of Chitosan-Hybridized Diatomite as Potential Delivery Systems of Oxaliplatin and 5-Fluorouracil Drugs: Equilibrium and Release Kinetics

The current work involves the modification of diatomite's biosiliceous frustules employing chitosan polymer chains (CS/Di) to serve as low-cost, biocompatible, multifunctional, and enhanced pharmaceutical delivery systems for 5-fluorouracil (5-Fu) together with oxaliplatin (OXPL). The CS/Di carrier displayed strong loading characteristics, notably at saturation (249.17 mg/g (OXPL) and 267.6 mg/g (5-Fu)), demonstrating a substantial 5-Fu affinity. The loading of the two types of medications onto CS/Di was conducted based on the kinetic behaviors of the conventional pseudo-first-order theory (R2 > 0.90). However, while the loading of OXPL follows the isotherm assumptions of the classic Langmuir model (R2 = 0.99), the loading of 5-Fu displays Fruendlich isotherm properties. Therefore, the 5-Fu loading displayed physical, heterogeneous, and multilayer loading properties, whereas the loading of OXPL occurred in homogeneous and monolayer form. The densities of occupied active sites of CS/Di were 37.19 and 32.8 mg/g for the sequestrations of OXPL and 5-Fu, respectively. Furthermore, by means of multimolecular processes, each loading site of CS/Di can bind up to 8 molecules of OXPL and 9 molecules of 5-Fu in a vertical orientation. This observation explains the higher loading capacities of 5-Fu in comparison to OXPL. The loading energies, which exhibit values <40 kJ/mol, provide confirmation of the dominant and significant consequences of physical processes as the regulating mechanisms. The release patterns of OXPL and 5-Fu demonstrate prolonged features over a duration of up to 120 h. The release kinetic simulation and diffusion exponents which are more than 0.45 provide evidence of the release of OXP and 5-Fu via non-Fickian transportation characteristics and the erosion/diffusion mechanism. Synthesis and characterization of Mg-hydroxyapatite and its cellulose hybridized structure as enhanced bio-carrier of oxaliplatin drug; equilibrium and release kinetics

An advanced form of magnesium-doped hydroxyapatite (Mg HAP) was synthesized and hybridized with cellulose fibers, producing a safe biocomposite (CF/Mg HAP) as an enhanced delivery structure of traditional oxaliplatin (OXPN) chemotherapy drug during the treatment stages of colorectal cancer. The CF/Mg HAP composite exhibits a notably higher OXPN encapsulation capacity (256.2 mg g-1) than the Mg HAP phase (148.9 mg g-1). The OXPN encapsulation process into CF/Mg HAP displays the isotherm behavior of the Langmuir model (R2 = 0.99) and the kinetic assumptions of pseudo-first-order kinetics (R2 > 0.95). The steric studies reflect a strong increment in the quantities of the free sites after the cellulose hybridization steps (Nm = 178.58 mg g-1) as compared to pure Mg HAP (Nm = 69.39 mg g-1). Also, the capacity of each site was enhanced to be loaded by 2 OXPN molecules (n = 1.43) in a vertical orientation. The OXPN encapsulation energy into CF/Mg HAP (<40 kJ mol-1) reflects physical encapsulation reactions involving van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonding. The OXPN release profiles of CF/Mg HAP exhibit slow and controlled properties for about 100 h, either at pH 5.5 or pH 7.4. The release kinetics and diffusion exponent (>0.45) signify non-Fickian transport and a complex erosion/diffusion release mechanism. The free CF/Mg HAP particles display a considerable cytotoxic effect on the HCT-116 cancer cells (21.82% cell viability), and their OXPN-loaded product shows a strong cytotoxic effect (1.85% cell viability).

The release kinetics and diffusion exponent (>0.45) signify non-Fickian transport and complex erosion/diffusion release mechanism. The free β-CD/HAP particles display a considerable cytotoxic effect on the HCT-116 cancer cells (33.62% cell viability) and its 5-FU-loaded product shows a strong cytotoxic effect (2.91% cell viability).

Synthesis and Characterization of Methoxy-Exfoliated Montmorillonite Nanosheets as Potential Carriers of 5-Fluorouracil Drug with Enhanced Loading, Release, and Cytotoxicity Properties

Natural bentonite clay (BE) underwent modification steps that involved the exfoliation of its layers into separated nanosheets (EXBE) and further functionalization of these sheets with methanol, forming methoxy-exfoliated bentonite (Mth/EXBE). The synthetically modified products were investigated as enhanced carriers of 5-fluorouracil as compared to raw bentonite. The modification process strongly induced loading properties that increased to 214.4 mg/g (EXBE) and 282.6 mg/g (Mth/EXBE) instead of 124.9 mg/g for bentonite. The loading behaviors were illustrated based on the kinetic (pseudo-first-order model), classic isotherm (Langmuir model), and advanced isotherm modeling (monolayer model of one energy). The Mth/EBE carrier displays significantly higher loading site density (95.9 mg/g) as compared to EXBE (66.2 mg/g) and BE (44.9 mg/g). The loading numbers of 5-Fu in each site of BE, EXBE, and Mth/EXBE (>1) reflect the vertical orientation of these loaded ions involving multi-molecular processes. The loading processes that occurred appeared to be controlled by complex physical and weak chemical mechanisms, considering both Gaussian energy (<8 KJ/mol) as well as loading energy (<40 KJ/mol). The releasing patterns of EXBE and Mth/EXBE exhibit prolonged and continuous properties up to 100 h, with Mth/EXBE displaying much faster behaviors. Based on the release kinetic modeling, the release reactions exhibit non-Fickian transport release properties, validating cooperative diffusion and erosion release mechanisms. The cytotoxicity of 5-Fu is also significantly enhanced by these carriers: 5-Fu/BE (8.6% cell viability), 5-Fu/EXBE (2.21% cell viability), and 5-Fu/Mth/EXBE (0.73% cell viability).

Insights into the Effect of Chitosan and β-Cyclodextrin Hybridization of Zeolite-A on Its Physicochemical and Cytotoxic Properties as a Bio-Carrier for 5-Fluorouracil: Equilibrium and Release Kinetics Studies

Synthetic zeolite-A (ZA) was hybridized with two different biopolymers (chitosan and β-cyclodextrin) producing biocompatible chitosan/zeolite-A (CS/ZA) and β-cyclodextrin/zeolite-A (CD/ZA) biocomposites. The synthetic composites were assessed as bio-carriers of the 5-fluorouracil drug (5-Fu) with enhanced properties, highlighting the impact of the polymer type. The hybridization by the two biopolymers resulted in notable increases in the 5-Fu loading capacities, to 218.2 mg/g (CS/ZA) and 291.3 mg/g (CD/ZA), as compared to ZA (134.2 mg/g). The loading behaviors using ZA as well as CS/ZA and CD/ZA were illustrated based on the classic kinetics properties of pseudo-first-order kinetics (R² > 0.95) and the traditional Langmuir isotherm (R² = 0.99). CD/ZA shows a significantly higher active site density (102.7 mg/g) in comparison to CS/ZA (64 mg/g) and ZA (35.8 mg/g). The number of loaded 5-Fu per site of ZA, CS/ZA, and CD/ZA (>1) validates the vertical ordering of the loaded drug ions by multi-molecular processes. These processes are mainly physical mechanisms based on the determined Gaussian energy (<8 kJ/mol) and loading energy (<40 kJ/mol). Both the CS/ZA and CD/ZA 5-Fu release activities display continuous and controlled profiles up to 80 h, with CD/ZA exhibiting much faster release. According to the release kinetics studies, the release processes contain non-Fickian transport release properties, suggesting cooperative diffusion and erosion release mechanisms. The cytotoxicity of 5-Fu is also significantly enhanced by these carriers: 5-Fu/ZA (11.72% cell viability), 5-Fu/CS/ZA (5.43% cell viability), and 5-Fu/CD/ZA (1.83% cell viability).

Synthesis and Characterization of β-Cyclodextrin-Hybridized Exfoliated Kaolinite Single Nanosheets as Potential Carriers of Oxaliplatin with Enhanced Loading, Release, and Cytotoxic Properties

Natural kaolinite was subjected to a successful exfoliation process into separated kaolinite nanosheets (KNs), followed by hybridization with β-cyclodextrin biopolymer (β-CD), forming an advanced bio-nanocomposite (β-CD/KNs). The synthetic products were evaluated as enhanced delivery structures for oxaliplatin chemotherapy (OXAPN). The hybridization of KNs with β-CD polymer notably enhanced the loading capacity to 355.3 mg/g (β-CD/KNs) as compared to 304.9 mg/g for KNs. The loading of OXAPN into both KNs and β-CD/KNs displayed traditional pseudo-first-order kinetics (R² > 0.85) and a conventional Langmuir isotherm (R² = 0.99). The synthetic β-CD/KNs validates a greater occupied effective site density (98.7 mg/g) than KNs (66.3 mg/g). Furthermore, the values of the n steric parameter (4.7 (KNs) and 3.6 (β-CD/KNs)) reveal the vertical orientation of the loaded molecules and the loading of them by multi-molecular mechanisms. These mechanisms are mainly physical processes based on the obtained Gaussian energy (<8 KJ/mol) and loading energy (<40 KJ/mol). The release profiles of both KNs and β-CD/KNs extend for about 120 h, with remarkably faster rates for β-CD/KNs. According to the release kinetic findings, the release of OXAPN displays non-Fickian transport behavior involving the cooperation of diffusion and erosion mechanisms. The KNs and β-CD/KNs as free particles showed considerable cytotoxicity and anticancer properties against HCT-116 cancer cell lines (71.4% cell viability (KNs) and 58.83% cell viability (β-CD/KNs)). Additionally, both KNs and β-CD/KNs significantly enhanced the OXAPN's cytotoxicity (2.04% cell viability (OXAPN/KNs) and 0.86% cell viability (OXAPN/β-CD/KNs).

Insight into the Morphological Properties of Nano-Kaolinite (Nanoscrolls and Nanosheets) on Its Qualification as Delivery Structure of Oxaliplatin: Loading, Release, and Kinetic Studies

Natural kaolinite underwent advanced morphological-modification processes that involved exfoliation of its layers into separated single nanosheets (KNs) and scrolled nanoparticles as nanotubes (KNTs). Synthetic nanostructures have been characterized as advanced and effective oxaliplatin-medication (OXAP) delivery systems. The morphological-transformation processes resulted in a remarkable enhancement in the loading capacity to 304.9 mg/g (KNs) and 473 mg/g (KNTs) instead of 29.6 mg/g for raw kaolinite. The loading reactions that occurred by KNs and KNTs displayed classic pseudo-first-order kinetics (R² > 0.90) and conventional Langmuir isotherms (R² = 0.99). KNTs exhibit a higher active site density (80.8 mg/g) in comparison to KNs (66.3 mg/g) and raw kaolinite (6.5 mg/g). Furthermore, compared to KNs and raw kaolinite, each site on the surface of KNTs may hold up to six molecules of OXAP (n = 5.8), in comparison with five molecules for KNs. This was accomplished by multi-molecular processes, including physical mechanisms considering both the Gaussian energy (<8 KJ/mol) and the loading energy (<40 KJ/mol). The release activity of OXAP from KNs and KNTs exhibits continuous and regulated profiles up to 100 h, either by KNs or KNTs, with substantially faster characteristics for KNTs. Based on the release kinetic investigations, the release processes have non-Fickian transport-release features, indicating cooperative-diffusion and erosion-release mechanisms. The synthesized structures have a significant cytotoxicity impact on HCT-116 cancer cell lines (KNs (71.4% cell viability and 143.6 g/mL IC-50); KNTs (11.3% cell viability and 114.3 g/mL IC-50). The steric studies reflect a strong increment in the quantities of the free sites after the cellulose hybridization steps (Nm = 100.01 mg g^-1) compared to pure N.Ph (Nm = 27.94 mg g^-1). Additionally, the capacity of each site was enhanced to be loaded by 4 OXPN molecules (n = 3.11) compared to 3 by N.Ph (n = 2.85) in a vertical orientation. The OXPN encapsulation energy into CF/N.Ph (<40 kJ mol^-1) reflects physical encapsulation reactions involving electrostatic attraction, van der Waals forces, and hydrogen bonding. The OXPN release profiles of CF/N.Ph exhibit slow and controlled properties for about 150 h either at pH 5.5 or at pH 7.4. The release kinetics and diffusion exponent (>0.45) signify non-Fickian transport and a complex erosion/diffusion release mechanism. The free CF/N.Ph particles display a considerable cytotoxic effect on HCT-116 cancer cells (46.91% cell viability), and its OXPN-loaded product shows a strong cytotoxic effect (3.14% cell viability).

Insight into the effects of H2SO4 and HNO3 acidification processes on the properties of coal as an enhanced adsorbent for ciprofloxacin residuals: Steric and energetic studies

A sub-bituminous natural coal sample (R.C) was treated with sulfuric acid (S.C) and nitric acid (N.C) as modified products and enhanced adsorbents for obtaining ciprofloxacin (CFX) antibiotic residuals from water. The characterization studied demonstrates enhancement in the surface area and the incorporation of new active oxygenated, sulfur-bearing, and nitrogen-bearing chemical groups into the structure of coal samples. This was reflected in the adsorption capacities that were enhanced from 164.08 mg/g (R.C) to 489.2 mg/g and 518.5 mg/g for N.C and S.C, respectively. The impact of the acid modification processes was evaluated based on the energetic and steric properties of their adsorption systems considering the parameters of the advanced monolayer equilibrium model with one energy site. The determined occupied active sites’ density of R.C (46.32–61.44 mg/g), N.C (168.7–364.9 mg/g), and S.C (159.2–249.9 mg/g) reflects an increase in the quantities of active centers after the acid treatment processes, especially with HNO3. The higher efficiencies of the active sites of S.C to adsorb more CFX molecules (n = 2.08–2.31) than N.C (n = 1.41–2.16) illustrate its higher adsorption capacity. The energetic investigation [adsorption (˂40 kJ/mol) and Gaussian (˂8 kJ/mol) energies] suggested adsorption of CFX by N.C and S.C mainly by physical processes such as van der Waals forces, hydrogen bonding, dipole bonding, and π–π interactions. Moreover, the determined thermodynamic functions including entropy, internal energy, and free enthalpy reflect the spontaneous and endothermic uptake of CFX on the surfaces of N.C and S.C.

Synthesis and characterization of cellulose functionalized zeolitic diatomite as an enhanced carrier of oxaliplatin drug; loading, release, and cytotoxicity

Natural diatomite frustules (D) were incorporated in zeolitization and cellulose functionalization processes to obtain zeolitized diatomite (ZD) and cellulose fibrous/zeolitized diatomite composite (CF/ZD). The modified products were assessed as potential carriers of oxaliplatin drug (OXPL) with enhanced properties. The prepared ZD (112.5 mg/g) and CF/ZD (268.3 mg/g) structures exhibit significantly enhanced encapsulation capacities as compared to raw diatomite (65.9 mg/g). The occurred encapsulation reactions follow the classic Pseudo-first order kinetic (R² > 0.93) and traditional Langmuir isotherm (R² = 0.99). The estimated effective encapsulation site density of CF/ZD is 104.8 mg/g which is a notably higher value than ZD (44.6 mg/g) and D (28.4 mg/g). Moreover, each effective site can be occupied with up to 3 molecules of OXPL molecules in vertical forms involving multi-molecular mechanisms. The encapsulation energy (<40 KJ/mol) suggested the predominant effects of the physical mechanisms during the encapsulation reactions. The release profiles of ZD as well as CF/ZD exhibit slow and controlled properties for about 100 h either at pH 5.5 or at pH 7.4. The release kinetic studies involving the obtained diffusion exponent values (>0.45) suggested non-Fickian transport and complex erosion/diffusion release mechanism. These structures exhibit enhanced cytotoxic effects on the HCT-116 cancer cell lines (D (18.78 % cell viability), ZD (9.76 % cell viability), and CF/ZD (3.16 % cell viability).

Synthesis of K+ and Na+ Synthetic Sodalite Phases by Low-Temperature Alkali Fusion of Kaolinite for Effective Remediation of Phosphate Ions: The Impact of the Alkali Ions and Realistic Studies

Two sodalite phases (potassium sodalite (K.SD) and sodium sodalite (Na.SD)) were prepared using alkali fusion of kaolinite followed by a hydrothermal treatment step for 4 h at 90 °C. The synthetic phases were characterized as potential adsorbents for PO43− from the aqueous solutions and real water from the Rákos stream (0.52 mg/L) taking into consideration the impact of the structural alkali ions (K+ and Na+). The synthetic Na.SD phase exhibited enhanced surface area (232.4 m2/g) and ion-exchange capacity (126.4 meq/100 g) as compared to the K.SD phase. Moreover, the Na.SD phase exhibited higher PO43− sequestration capacity (Qmax = 261.6 mg g−1 and Qsat = 175.3 mg g−1) than K.SD phase (Qmax = 201.9 mg g−1 and Qsat = 127.4 mg g−1). The PO43− sequestration processes of both Na.SD and K.SD are spontaneous, homogenous, and exothermic reactions that follow the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-first-order kinetics. Estimation of the occupied active site density validates the enrichment of the Na.SD phase with high quantities of active sites (Nm = 86.1 mg g−1) as compared to K.SD particles (Nm = 44.4 mg g−1). Moreover, the sequestration and Gaussian energies validate the cooperation of physisorption and weak chemisorption processes including zeolitic ion exchange reactions. Both Na.SD and K.SD exhibit significant selectivity for PO43− in the coexisting of other common anions (Cl−, SO42−, HCO3−, and NO3−) and strong stability properties. Their realistic application results in the complete adsorption of PO43- from Rákos stream water after 20 min (Na. SD) and 60 min (K.SD).

Shaping polyelectrolyte composites for heavy metals adsorption from wastewater: Experimental assessment and equilibrium studies

Design of core/shell composite microparticles for loading/release of organic/inorganic pollutants is of great interest in wastewater treatment. As compared to the classic layer-by-layer strategy, the new approach presented in this study introduced higher organic shell amounts in one-pot deposition step, with less material and energy consumption and lack of toxic by-products formation. Herein, one weak polycation (polyethyleneimine) and two weak polyanions were directly deposited onto silica surface through precipitation of an in-situ formed interpolyelectrolyte coacervate, followed by selective crosslinking with glutaraldehyde and extraction of polyanion chains, confirmed by electrokinetic measurements and FTIR spectra of composites. Twelve composite sorbents were synthesized and tested for adsorption of cadmium, as model heavy metal ion. It was demonstrated that the high sorption occurred onto four newly synthesized composites which is correlated to the deposited shell amount, dependent on the deposition method, polyanion nature and crosslinking ratio. The Cd²⁺ sorbed amount increased with the polyelectrolyte deposited amount and with the accessibility toward active sorption site, less cross-linked composite shells sorbing higher amounts as compared to strong cross-linked shells, the molar ratio [active site]:[Cd²⁺] ranging from 16:1 to 26:1. The best fitting of four isotherm (Langmuir, Freundlich, Sips and Toth) and four kinetics (pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, modified Freundlich and Elovich) models was assessed by the sum of normalized errors, based on different nonlinear regression error functions, and by the Hannah-Quinn information criterion. In general, the best agreement with the experimental data was found for Toth isotherm and the pseudo-second order kinetic model. Efficient regeneration of the sorbents was possible at least three times. The competitive effect of Pb²⁺ and Ni²⁺ ions was also studied in simulated and real systems. Silica composite sorbents with polyethyleneimine chains as major component of the shell could be very promising in wastewater treatment processes.

Insight into the Effect of Sulfonation Techniques on the Adsorption Properties of -SO3H Surface-Functionalized Coal as Adsorbent for Malachite Green Dye: Steric and Energetic Investigation

Natural coal (N.C) was sulfonated with sulfuric acid by normal stirring (MS.C) and sonication waves (SS.C) to obtain -SO₃H functionalized coal as enhanced adsorbents of malachite green dye (MG). The sulfonated products exhibit enhanced surface area (MS.C (27.2 m²/g) and SS.C (45.8 m²/g)) as compared to N.C. SS.C achieved higher acid density (14.2 mmol/g) and sulfur content (13.2 wt. %) as compared to MS.C. The impact of the sulfonation processes on the adsorption of MG was assessed based on the monolayer isotherm model of one energy. The MG Q _sat of N.C (121.3 mg/g), MS.C (226.3 mg/g), and SS.C (296.4 mg/g) validate the significant effect of the sulfonation processes by the sonication waves. This is in agreement with the active site densities that reflect the saturation of SS.C by more active sites (180.74 mg/g) than MS.C (120.38 mg/g) and N.C (70.84 mg/g). The MS.C and SS.C can adsorb three MG molecules as compared to two molecules per site of N.C. The Gaussian energy (<8 kJ/mol) and adsorption energy (<40 kJ/mol)) reflects the physisorption of MG involving van der Waals forces, hydrogen bonding, and dipole bonding forces. The thermodynamic functions demonstrate the uptake of MG by exothermic, spontaneous, feasible reactions.

Synthesis and Characterization of Green ZnO@polynaniline/Bentonite Tripartite Structure (G.Zn@PN/BE) as Adsorbent for As (V) Ions: Integration, Steric, and Energetic Properties

A green ZnO@polynaniline/bentonite composite (G.Zn@PN/BE) was synthesized as an enhanced adsorbent for As (V) ions. Its adsorption properties were assessed in comparison with the integrated components of bentonite (BE) and polyaniline/bentonite (PN/BE) composites. The G.Zn@PN/BE composite achieved an As (V) retention capacity (213 mg/g) higher than BE (72.7 mg/g) and PN/BE (119.8 mg/g). The enhanced capacity of G.Zn@PN/BE was studied using classic (Langmuir) and advanced equilibrium (monolayer model of one energy) models. Considering the steric properties, the structure of G.Zn@PN/BE demonstrated a higher density of active sites (Nm = 109.8 (20 °C), 108.9 (30 °C), and 67.8 mg/g (40 °C)) than BE and PN/BE. This declared the effect of the integration process in inducing the retention capacity by increasing the quantities of the active sites. The number of adsorbed As (V) ions per site (1.76 up to 2.13) signifies the retention of two or three ions per site by a multi-ionic mechanism. The adsorption energies (from -3.07 to -3.26 kJ/mol) suggested physical retention mechanisms (hydrogen bonding and dipole bonding forces). The adsorption energy, internal energy, and free enthalpy reflected the exothermic, feasible, and spontaneous nature of the retention process. The structure is of significant As (V) uptake capacity in the existence of competitive anions or metal ions.

Research progress in the removal of heavy metals by modified chitosan

Chitosan and its modifiers have been widely studied for their good biocompatibility and excellent adsorption properties for heavy metal ions. The synthesis and application of modified chitosan, the effects of process variables (such as pH, amount of adsorbent, temperature, contact time, etc.), adsorption kinetics, thermodynamics and the adsorption mechanism on the removal of heavy metal ions are reviewed. The purpose is to provide the latest information about chitosan as adsorbent and to promote the synthesis of modified chitosan and its application in the removal of heavy metals.

Insight into the adsorption properties of a β-cyclodextrin/phillipsite organophilic composite for effective removal of toxic organophosphorus pesticides: kinetic and advanced equilibrium studies

β-Cyclodextrin/phillipsite was used in the uptake of three pesticides from water achieving Qsat values of 360 mg g−1 (MPn), 321.6 mg g−1 (OM), and 434.5 mg g−1 (AC). The uptake energies suggested endothermic physisorption reactions.

Synthesis and characterization of Fe0@chitosan/cellulose biocompatible composites from natural resources as advanced carriers for ibuprofen drug: reaction kinetics and equilibrium

Fe0@chitosan/cellulose was synthesized as a carrier for Ibuprofen drug. It has achieved a loading capacity of 553 mg g−1 and a slow release profile for 260 h, which is controlled by complex diffusion and erosion mechanisms.

Synthesis of zeolite/geopolymer composite for enhanced sequestration of phosphate (PO43-) and ammonium (NH4+) ions; equilibrium properties and realistic study

Zeolite impeded geopolymer (Z/G) was synthesized from natural kaolinite and diatomite. The structure (Z/G) was characterized as an enhanced adsorbent for PO₄^3- and NH₄⁺ ions from aqueous solutions, groundwater, and sewage water. The synthetic Z/G structure exhibits sequestration capacities of 206 mg/g and 140 mg/g for PO₄^3- and NH₄⁺, respectively which are higher values than the recognized results for the geopolymer and other adsorbents in literature. The sequestration reactions of PO₄^3- and NH₄⁺ by Z/G are of Pseudo-Second order kinetic behavior considering both the Chi-squared (χ²) and correlation coefficient (R²) values. The sequestration reactions occur in homogenous and monolayer forms considering their agreement with Langmuir behavior. The Gaussian energies (12.4 kJ/mol (PO₄^3-) and 10.47 kJ/mol (NH₄⁺)) demonstrate the operation of a chemical sequestration mechanism that might be involved zeolitic ion exchange process and chemical complexation. Additionally, these reactions are exothermic processes of spontaneous and favorable properties based on thermodynamic studies. The Z/G structure is of significant affinity for both PO₄^3- and NH₄⁺ even in the existence of other anions as Cl^-, HCO₃^-, SO₄^2-, and NO₃^-. Finally, the structure used effectively in the purification of groundwater and sewage water from PO₄^3- and NH₄⁺ in addition to nitrate, sulfate, and some metal ions.

An Overview on Composite Sorbents Based on Polyelectrolytes Used in Advanced Wastewater Treatment

Advanced wastewater treatment processes are required to implement wastewater reuse in agriculture or industry, the efficient removal of targeted priority and emerging organic & inorganic pollutants being compulsory (due to their eco-toxicological and human health effects, bio-accumulative, and degradation characteristics). Various processes such as membrane separations, adsorption, advanced oxidation, filtration, disinfection may be used in combination with one or more conventional treatment stages, but technical and environmental criteria are important to assess their application. Natural and synthetic polyelectrolytes combined with some inorganic materials or other organic or inorganic polymers create new materials (composites) that are currently used in sorption of toxic pollutants. The recent developments on the synthesis and characterization of composites based on polyelectrolytes, divided according to their macroscopic shape-beads, core-shell, gels, nanofibers, membranes-are discussed, and a correlation of their actual structure and properties with the adsorption mechanisms and removal efficiencies of various pollutants in aqueous media (priority and emerging pollutants or other model pollutants) are presented.

Rosaniline Hydrochloride Encapsulated MCM-48: Fluorescent and Electrochemical Sensor for Dopamine

The dye Rosaniline hydrochloride (RANH) has been successfully incorporated in MCM-48 (designated as RANH@MCM-48) and characterized by various spectroscopic methods including FT-IR, SEM, EDX and N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherm. RANH@MCM-48 in aqueous medium acts as fluorescence "on" sensor for neurotransmitter dopamine (DA) in presence of its main biological interfering agent ascorbic acid or vitamin c (AA) along with Glucose, Cholesterol and Uric acid (UA). The limits of detection (LOD) were found to be 65 nM and 51 nM respectively in absence and in presence of AA. The interaction of DA to RANH@MCM-48 is found to be reversible with respect to EDTA^2-. The fluorescence intensity vs. pH plot shows a narrow fluorescence window of 7.2 to 8.8. RANH@MCM-48 has been successfully applied for DA detection in artificial cerebrospinal fluid (ACF) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) with LOD values 27 nM and 22.5 nM respectively. Platinum disc electrode has been modified with RANH@MCM-48 which showed distinct oxidation peaks with a separation of 0.188 V in cyclic voltammetry (CV). The LOD for DA in presence of AA determined from oxidation current is 77.5 nM. The voltammetric detection of DA is found to be free from common interfering species Na⁺, K⁺, Ca²⁺, Fe²⁺, UA, Cholesterol and Glucose. RANH@MCM-48 has been found to be a very effective fluorescence and voltammetric sensor for DA with very low  LOD.

Insight into the role of the zeolitization process in enhancing the adsorption performance of kaolinite/diatomite geopolymer for effective retention of Sr (II) ions; batch and column studies

Diatomite/kaolinite-based geopolymer (GP) was synthesized and incorporated in zeolitization process (Z/GP) to investigate the role of the zeolite phases in inducing its retention capacity of the dissolved Sr (II) ions in water. The retention of Sr (II) ions using Z/GP in comparison with GP was evaluated based on both batch and fixed-bed column studies. In the batch study, the zeolitized geopolymer (Z/GP) shows enhancement in the Sr (II) retention capacity (193.7 mg/g) as compared to the normal geopolymer (102 mg/g). Moreover, the recyclability studies demonstrate higher stability for Z/GP than GP with a retention percentage higher than 90% for five reusing runs. The kinetic and the equilibrium properties of the occurred Sr (II) retention reactions follow the assumption of the Pseudo-Second order model (R² > 0.96) and Langmuir model (R² > 0.97), respectively. The Gaussian energies (15.4 kJ/mol (GP) and 11.47 kJ/mol (Z/GP)) related to retention mechanism of chemical type and within the suggested range for the zeolitic ion exchange processes. The Sr (II) retention reactions by GP and Z/GP are of spontaneous and exothermic properties which qualifies the products to be used at low-temperature conditions (20 °C). The column studies also declared higher performance for the Z/GP fixed bed as compared to the normal GP bed considering the total Sr (II) retention percentage (72.9%), treated volume (8 L), saturation time (1620 min), and a maximum capacity of Z/GP particles in the bed (567.6 mg/g).

Effective decontamination of Ca2+ and Mg2+ hardness from groundwater using innovative muscovite based sodalite in batch and fixed-bed column studies; dynamic and equilibrium studies

A novel form of sodalite was synthesized from muscovite (M.SD) as low-cost softening material for both Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ ions from real groundwater in batch and column studies. The sodalite sample showed significant surface area (105 m²/g) and ion exchange capacity (87.3 meq/100 g) which qualifies it strong for softening applications. The incorporation of the M.SD as a fixed bed in column system at a fixed thickness of 4 cm and flow rates of 5 mL/min resulted in removal percentages of 90.5% and 92.2% for Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺, respectively at pH 7.6. Considering the real concentrations of the ions (Ca²⁺ (233 mg/L) and Mg²⁺ (114 mg/L)), the M.SD bed has the ability to reduce their concentrations according to the recommended limits (75 mg/L for Ca²⁺ and 50 mg/L for Mg²⁺). These conditions resulted in purification of about 8.1 L and 8.7 L with breakthrough intervals of 1380 min and 1440 min; and saturation interval more than 1620 min for Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺, respectively. The M.SD columns' performances were described considering the assumption of the Thomas model, Adams-Bohart model, and Yoon-Nelson model. The batch studies demonstrate the uptake of both Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ ions according to the Pseudo-First order kinetics and Langmuir equilibrium behaviour. Considering the values of Gaussian energies (0.77 KJ/mol (Ca²⁺) and 1.36 KJ/mol (Mg²⁺)), the uptake of these ions occurred by homogenous reactions of monolayer form and physical nature. The thermodynamic studies declared the spontaneous properties of the reactions and their exothermic properties.

Chemical and physical Chitosan modification for designing enzymatic industrial biocatalysts: How to choose the best strategy?

Chitosan is one of the most abundant natural polymer worldwide, and due to its inherent characteristics, its use in industrial processes has been extensively explored. Because it is biodegradable, biocompatible, non-toxic, hydrophilic, cheap, and has good physical-chemical stability, it is seen as an excellent alternative for the replacement of synthetic materials in the search for more sustainable production methodologies. Thus being, a possible biotechnological application of Chitosan is as a direct support for enzyme immobilization. However, its applicability is quite specific, and to overcome this issue, alternative pretreatments are required, such as chemical and physical modifications to its structure, enabling its use in a wider array of applications. This review aims to present the topic in detail, by exploring and discussing methods of employment of Chitosan in enzymatic immobilization processes with various enzymes, presenting its advantages and disadvantages, as well as listing possible chemical modifications and combinations with other compounds for formulating an ideal support for this purpose. First, we will present Chitosan emphasizing its characteristics that allow its use as enzyme support. Furthermore, we will discuss possible physicochemical modifications that can be made to Chitosan, mentioning the improvements obtained in each process. These discussions will enable a comprehensive comparison between, and an informed choice of, the best technologies concerning enzyme immobilization and the application conditions of the biocatalyst.

Insight into chitosan/zeolite-A nanocomposite as an advanced carrier for levofloxacin and its anti-inflammatory properties; loading, release, and anti-inflammatory studies

Chitosan/zeolite-A nanocomposite (CH/ZA) was synthesized as a potential carrier for levofloxacin (LVOX) of enhanced technical properties. The CH/ZA composite displayed enhanced loading capacity (425 mg/g) as compared to chitosan (188.8 mg/g) and zeolite-A (234.6 mg/g). The loading behavior follows Pseudo-Second-order and Langmuir as kinetic and isotherm models. The equilibrium studies, Gaussian energy (8.15 KJ/mol), and thermodynamic parameters demonstrate homogenous and monolayer loading by complex chemical and physical reactions that are of spontaneous and exothermic nature. The CH/ZA composite is of slow and continuous release profile (200h) with 94.3% as the maximum release percentage. The release reactions are of non-Fickian behavior involving both diffusion and erosion mechanisms. The loading of LVOX into CH/ZA induced its anti-inflammatory effect against the cytokine production (IL-6 and IL-8) within the human bronchial epithelia cells (NL20). The cytotoxicity studies on the normal cells demonstrated a high safety value for the composite.

Insight into chitosan/mesoporous silica nanocomposites as eco-friendly adsorbent for enhanced retention of U (VI) and Sr (II) from aqueous solutions and real water

The chitosan chains were integrated with MCM-48 mesoporous silica in an eco-friendly composite (CH/MCM-48) of enhanced adsorption capacity. The prepared CH/MCM-48 composite was applied in systematic retention of U (VI) as well as Sr (II) ions from water as the commonly detected radioactive pollutants. It displayed promising retention capacities of 261.3 mg/g and 328.6 mg/g for U (VI) and Sr (II) considering the equilibrium time interval that was identified after 420 min. The composite showed the kinetic behavior of the Pseudo-First order model and the isotherm properties of the Langmuir assumption. The thermodynamic assessment of the reactions validated the retention of both U (VI) and Sr (II) ions by spontaneous, favorable, and exothermic reactions. Based on the theoretical values of entropy (-5.94 kJ mol^-1 (U (VI)) and -2.93 kJ mol^-1 (Sr (II))), Gibbs free energy (less than 20 kJ mol^-1), and Gaussian energy (5.77 kJ mol^-1 (U (VI)) and 4.56 kJ mol^-1 (Sr (II))) the uptake processes are related to physical adsorption reactions. The CH/MCM-48 composite is of significant recyclability and showed considerable affinities for the studied radioactive ions even in the presence of other metal ions (Cd (II), Pb (II), Zn (II), and Co (II)).

Instantaneous Adsorption of Synthetic Dyes from an Aqueous Environment Using Kaolinite Nanotubes: Equilibrium and Thermodynamic Studies

Innovative kaolinite nanotubes (KNTs) are synthesized utilizing a simple technique involving a sonication-induced exfoliation process, followed by chemical scrolling reactions. The KNTs as a material have high reactivity and promising surface area to be used in the purification of water from cationic dyes (safranin (SF) and malachite green (MG)) and anionic dyes (methyl orange (MO) and Congo red (CR)). The kinetic studies of the four dyes SF, MG, CR, and MO show an equilibration time interval of 240 min. The SF, MG, CR, and MO dyes' uptake reactions are in agreement with the kinetic behavior of the pseudo-first-order model and the equilibrium properties of the Langmuir model. Such modeling results, in addition to the Gaussian energies from the Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) model (SF (1.01 kJ/mol), MG (1.08 kJ/mol), CR (1.11 kJ/mol), and MO (1.65 kJ/mol)), hypothesize monolayer adsorption of the four dyes by physical reactions. The KNTs show theoretical q _max values of 431.6, 489.9, 626.2, and 675.5 (mg/g) for SF, MG, CR, and MO, respectively. The thermodynamic examination of SF, MG, CR, and MO adsorption reactions using KNTs verifies their adsorption by exothermic and spontaneous reactions. The KNT adsorbents achieve promising adsorption results in the presence of different coexisting ions and show significant recyclability properties. Therefore, the production of KNTs from kaolinite shows a strong effect on inducing the textural, physicochemical, and adsorption properties of clay layers as well as their affinity for different species of synthetic dyes.
