Abstract
Background & Objectives Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is the key for surviving cardiac arrest. Recent recommendations propose that CPR can - and should -be taught to schoolchildren. This e-learning-based study analyzes whether face-to-face CPR training can be partly substituted with e-learning by measuring CPR knowledge and self-efficacy in trainees. Methods In this cluster randomized-controlled prospective, students attending grades 5 to 7 of a German secondary school volunteered to participate and were randomly assigned to one of two groups with different methods for CPR training each: a traditional instructor-led group (control) where students received face-to-face teaching by a BLS instructor (45 min), and an e-learning group (intervention) where schoolchildren were able to accomplish their theoretical CPR training using an e-learning module (15 min). CPR knowledge and self-efficacy were measured and compared before (t0) and after (t1) the training using questionnaires. Face-to-face CPR training (45 min) on manikins proceeded in both groups hereafter. The formal hypothesis was that e-learning would result in better CPR knowledge. Results Overall, 375 students participated; 33 of which had to be excluded. 342 participants were included in statistical analysis (instructor-led group n = 109; e-learning group n = 233). The study was terminated early due to the Covid19 pandemic, and did not reach the required number of participants. Lacking statistical power, an analysis of the existing datasets failed to show superiority of e-learning vs. conventional training for CPR knowledge (p = 0.306). Both groups improved CPR knowledge (p < 0.001) and self-efficacy (p < 0.001) after CPR training and showed an equal, high level of satisfaction with their perceived training method (face-to-face: 4.1[4.0-4.2] vs. e-learning: 4.0[3.9-4.1]; p = 0.153; maximum 5 points). Conclusions This study failed to demonstrate superiority for e-learning but was terminated early and hence underpowered. Further research is necessary to prove the efficiency of e-learning tools for CPR.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE Blended learning offers the advantages of both instructor-led and self-instruction methods in basic life support (BLS). Our study aims to compare the effects of blended learning with those of traditional instructor-led methods on the performance of laypersons taking BLS courses. METHODS A total of 108 participants were randomly assigned to three groups: traditional instruction (group A, n = 36), blended learning with two rounds of practice (group B, n = 36), and blended learning with three rounds of practice (group C, n = 36). Group A received a 90-min lecture and a 30-min hands-on practice session using a manikin and a metronome. Participants in groups B and C received 18-min standardized online video lessons and performed hands-on practice twice and thrice, respectively. The primary outcome was chest compression at a correct speed (100-120 compressions per min) after the training course. Secondary outcomes included knowledge test scores, attitudes and confidence, and individual skill performance after training. RESULTS Patient characteristics were similar between the groups. Blended learning with practicing thrice resulted in the highest compressions at a correct speed (group A vs. B vs. C, 68.09 vs 80.03 vs 89.42, p = 0.015) and the shortest average hands-off time (group A vs. B vs. C, 1.12 vs 0.86 vs 0.17 s, p = 0.015). Both blended groups performed better in confirming environmental safety (p < 0.001). No differences in scores of the knowledge test, attitude, or confidence were noted among the three groups. CONCLUSION Blended learning with three rounds of hands-on practice may be considered an alternative teaching method.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Generally, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills decline substantially over time. By combining web-based self-regulated learning with hands-on practice, blended training can be a time- and resource-efficient approach enabling individuals to acquire or refresh CPR skills at their convenience. However, few studies have evaluated the effectiveness of blended CPR refresher training compared with that of the traditional method. OBJECTIVE This study investigated and compared the effectiveness of traditional and blended CPR training through 6-month and 12-month refresher sessions with CPR ability indicators. METHODS This study recruited participants aged ≥18 years from the Automated External Defibrillator Donation Project. The participants were divided into 4 groups based on the format of the CPR training and refresher training received: (1) initial traditional training (a 30-minute instructor-led, hands-on session) and 6-month traditional refresher training (Traditional6 group), (2) initial traditional training and 6-month blended refresher training (an 18-minute e-learning module; Mixed6 group), (3) initial traditional training and 12-month blended refresher training (Mixed12 group), and (4) initial blended training and 6-month blended refresher training (Blended6 group). CPR knowledge and performance were evaluated immediately after initial training. For each group, following initial training but before refresher training, a learning effectiveness assessment was conducted at 12 and 24 months. CPR knowledge was assessed using a written test with 15 multiple-choice questions, and CPR performance was assessed through an examiner-rated skill test and objectively through manikin feedback. A generalized estimating equation model was used to analyze changes in CPR ability indicators. RESULTS This study recruited 1163 participants (mean age 41.82, SD 11.6 years; n=725, 62.3% female), with 332 (28.5%), 270 (23.2%), 258 (22.2%), and 303 (26.1%) participants in the Mixed6, Traditional6, Mixed12, and Blended6 groups, respectively. No significant between-group difference was observed in knowledge acquisition after initial training (P=.23). All groups met the criteria for high-quality CPR skills (ie, average compression depth: 5-6 cm; average compression rate: 100-120 beats/min; chest recoil rate: >80%); however, a higher proportion (98/303, 32.3%) of participants receiving blended training initially demonstrated high-quality CPR skills. At 12 and 24 months, CPR skills had declined in all the groups, but the decline was significantly higher in the Mixed12 group, whereas the differences were not significant between the other groups. This finding indicates that frequent retraining can maintain high-quality CPR skills and that blended refresher training is as effective as traditional refresher training. CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicate that 6-month refresher training sessions for CPR are more effective for maintaining high-quality CPR skills, and that as refreshers, self-learning e-modules are as effective as instructor-led sessions. Although the blended learning approach is cost and resource effective, factors such as participant demographics, training environment, and level of engagement must be considered to maximize the potential of this approach. Abstract
BACKGROUND Serious games have emerged as an innovative educational strategy with the potential to significantly enhance the quality and effectiveness of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training. Despite their promise, there remains a degree of controversy when comparing the advantages of serious games with traditional CPR training methods. This study seeks to provide a comprehensive assessment of the impact of serious games on CPR training and education by systematically analyzing the results of previous research. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to assess the effect of serious games on CPR training and education by summarizing and pooling the results of previous studies. METHODS We conducted a thorough and systematic search across 9 prominent web-based databases, encompassing the period from the inception of these databases until April 1, 2023. The databases included in our search were PubMed, Cochrane Library, Wiley Online Library, EBSCO (PsycInfo), SpringerLink, Chinese Biology Medicine Disc, Vip Journal Integration Platform, Wanfang Database, and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure. The studies selected adhered to the following criteria: (1) being a randomized controlled trial comparing serious games and traditional methods for CPR training; (2) having participants aged 12 years or older in CPR; (3) having an experimental group using serious games and a control group using nongame methods for CPR instruction; and (4) having outcomes including theoretical and skill assessments, compression depth, and rate. The Cochrane risk of bias assessment tool was used to evaluate the risk of bias. Data analysis was performed using RevMan (version 5.3; Cochrane Training), and mean differences (MDs) and standardized mean differences (SMDs) with 95% CIs were used to calculate continuous variables. RESULTS A total of 9 articles were included, involving 791 study participants, of whom 395 in the experimental group taught CPR training using serious games and 396 in the control group taught CPR training using traditional methods. The results of our meta-analysis indicate that the use of serious games in CPR training yields outcomes that are comparable in effectiveness to traditional training methods across several key areas. Specifically, serious games demonstrated equivalence to traditional formats in theory assessment (SMD -0.22, 95% CI - 0.96 to 0.51; P=.55), skill assessment (SMD -0.49, 95% CI -1.52 to 0.55; P=.36), compression depth (MD -3.17, 95% CI -0.18 to 6.53; P=.06), and compression rate (MD -0.20, 95% CI -7.29 to 6.89; P=.96). CONCLUSIONS In summary, serious games offer a viable and effective CPR education approach, yielding results comparable to traditional formats. This modality is a valuable addition to CPR training methodologies. However, caution is warranted in interpreting these findings due to limited controlled trials, small sample sizes, and low-quality meta-analyzed evidence.

Abstract
The spread of infectious diseases has accelerated the transition from face-to-face (F2F) to non-F2F (NF2F) education. To maintain the effect of successful NF2F education in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, reorganizing the curriculum to suit the NF2F educational environment is necessary. We propose an appropriate learning curriculum for NF2F basic life support (BLS) training for laypersons based on expert surveys and learners' performance outcomes. This study included three stages and used multiple methods. A draft curriculum was created through a literature review and three-round Delphi approach, and then applied as a test for actual education. After the training, the final curriculum of the NF2F BLS training for laypersons was proposed by reflecting on the performance outcomes of learners and expert opinions. NF2F theoretical education was simplified into five content items: concept of chain of survival, legal protection for first aiders, importance of bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation, how to recognize a patient in cardiac arrest and activate the emergency medical services system, and reduced training time. In the hands-on skills session, it was recommended to practice chest compressions using a simple intuitive feedback device and to use automated external defibrillators step-by-step more than in F2F training. In conclusion, NF2F training is a suitable option for BLS training methods in situations where F2F training is difficult.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training for adolescents is a prominent strategy to increase the number of community first responders who can recognize cardiac arrest and initiate CPR. More schools are adopting technology-based CPR training modalities to reduce class time and reliance on instructor availability and increase their capacity for wider training dissemination. However, it remains unclear whether these technology-based modalities are comparable with standard training. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to systematically review and perform meta-analyses to evaluate the effectiveness of technology-based CPR training on adolescents' CPR skills and knowledge. METHODS Searches were conducted in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Ovid MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Education Resources Information Center, ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global, and Scopus from inception to June 25, 2021. Eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) compared technology-based training with standard training for adolescents aged 12 to 18 years. Studies were appraised using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool. Random-effects meta-analyses were performed using Review Manager (The Cochrane Collaboration). Subgroup analyses were conducted to explore sources of heterogeneity. Overall certainty of evidence was appraised using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation approach. RESULTS Seventeen RCTs involving 5578 adolescents were included. Most of the studies had unclear risks of selection bias (9/17, 53%) and high risks of performance bias (16/17, 94%). Interventions that included instructor guidance increased the likelihood of adolescents checking the responsiveness of the person experiencing cardiac arrest (risk ratio 1.39, 95% CI 1.19-1.63) and calling the emergency medical services (risk ratio 1.11, 95% CI 1.00-1.24). Self-directed technology-based CPR training without instructor guidance was associated with poorer overall skill performance (Cohen d=-0.74, 95% CI -1.02 to -0.45). Training without hands-on practice increased mean compression rates (mean difference 9.38, 95% CI 5.75-13.01), whereas real-time feedback potentially yielded slower compression rates. Instructor-guided training with hands-on practice (Cohen d=0.45, 95% CI 0.13-0.78) and the use of computer programs or mobile apps (Cohen d=0.62, 95% CI 0.37-0.86) improved knowledge scores. However, certainty of evidence was very low. CONCLUSIONS Instructor-guided technology-based CPR training that includes hands-on practice and real-time feedback is noninferior to standard training in CPR skills and knowledge among adolescents. Our findings supported the use of technology-based components such as videos, computer programs, or mobile apps for self-directed theoretical instruction. However, instructor guidance, hands-on practice, and real-time feedback are still necessary components of training to achieve better learning outcomes for adolescents. Such a blended learning approach may reduce class time and reliance on instructor availability. Because of the high heterogeneity of the studies reviewed, the findings from this study should be interpreted with caution. More high-quality RCTs with large sample sizes and follow-up data are needed. Finally, technology-based training can be considered a routine refresher training modality in schools for future research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Early recognition and call for help, fast initiation of chest compressions, and early defibrillation are key elements to improve survival after cardiac arrest but are often not achieved. We aimed to investigate what occurs during the initial treatment of unannounced in situ simulated inhospital cardiac arrests and reasons for successful or inadequate initial resuscitation efforts. METHODS We conducted unannounced full-scale in situ simulated inhospital cardiac arrest followed by a debriefing. Simulations and debriefings were video recorded for subsequent analysis. We analyzed quantitative data on actions performed and time measurements to key actions from simulations and qualitative data from transcribed debriefings. RESULTS We conducted 36 simulations. Time to diagnosis of cardiac arrest was 37 (27; 55) s. Time to first chest compression from diagnosis of cardiac arrest was 37 (18; 74) s, time to calling the cardiac arrest team was 144 (71; 180) s, and time to first shock was 221 (181; 301) s. We observed participants perform several actions after diagnosing the cardiac arrest and before initiating chest compressions. Domains emerging from the debriefings were teaming and resources. Teaming included the themes communication, role allocation, leadership, and shared knowledge, which all included facilitators and barriers. Resources included the themes knowledge, technical issues, and organizational resources, of which all included barriers, and knowledge also included facilitators. CONCLUSION Using unannounced in situ simulated cardiac arrests, we found that key elements such as chest compressions, calling the cardiac arrest team, and defibrillation were delayed. Perceived barriers to resuscitation performance were leadership and teaming, whereas experience, clear leadership, and recent training were perceived as important facilitators for treatment progress.

Abstract
Our study aimed to compare the effect of self-instruction with manikin feedback to that of instructor-led method on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) skill performance. In our randomized non-inferiority trial, 64 non-healthcare providers were randomly allocated into self-instruction and instructor-led groups. Both groups watched a 27-min standardized teaching video. Participants in the self-instruction group then performed hands-on practice on the Resusci Anne QCPR with a device-driven feedback, while those in the instructor-led group practiced manikins; feedback was provided and student's questions were answered by instructors. Outcomes were measured by blinded evaluators and SkillReporter software. The primary outcome was the pass rate. Secondary outcomes were scores of the knowledge test and items of individual skill performance. The baseline characteristics of the two groups were similar. The pass rates were 93.8% in both group (absolute difference 0%, p = 0.049 for noninferiority). The knowledge test scores were not significantly different. However, the self-instruction group performed better in some chest compression and ventilation skills, but performed worse in confirming environmental safety and checking normal breathing. There was no difference in AED skills between the two groups. Our results showed the self-instruction method is not inferior to the instructor-led method.

Abstract
Different studies show that mixed methodology can be effective in medical training. However, there are no conclusive studies in specialist training on advanced life support (ALS). The main objective of this research is to determine if, with mixed didactic methodology, which includes e-learning, similar results are produced to face-to-face training. The method used was quasi-experimental with a focus on efficiency and evaluation at seven months, in which 114 specialist doctors participated and where the analysis of the sociodemographic and pre-test variables points to the homogeneity of the groups. The intervention consisted of e-learning training plus face-to-face workshops versus standard. The results were the performance in knowledge and technical skills in cardiac arrest scenarios, the perceived quality, and the perception of the training. There were no significant differences in immediate or deferred performance. In the degree of satisfaction, a significant difference was obtained in favour of the face-to-face group. The perception in the training itself presented similar results. The main limitations consisted of sample volume, dropping out of the deferred tests, and not evaluating the transfer or the impact. Finally, mixed methodology including e-learning in ALS courses reduced the duration of the face-to-face sessions and allowed a similar performance.

Abstract
Objective Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) education with a feedback device is known to result in better CPR skills compared to one without the feedback device. However, its long-term benefits have not been established. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term CPR skill retention after training using real-time visual manikins in comparison to that of non-feedback manikins. Methods We recruited 120 general university students who were randomly divided into the real-time feedback group (RTFG) and the non-feedback group. Of them, 95 (RTFG, 48; non-feedback group, 47) attended basic life support and automated external defibrillation training for 1 hour. For comparison of retention of CPR skills, the two groups were evaluated based on 2-minute chest compression performed immediately after training and at 3, 6, and 9 months. The CPR parameters between the two groups were also compared using a generalized linear model. Results At immediately after training, the performance of RTFG was better in terms of average chest compression depth (51.9±1.1 vs. 45.5±1.1, p<0.001) and a higher percentage of adequate chest compression depth (51.0±4.1 vs. 26.9±4.2, p<0.001). This significant difference was maintained until 6 months after training, but there was no difference at 9 months after training. However, there was no significant difference in the chest compression rate and the correct hand position at any time point. Conclusion CPR training with a real-time visual feedback manikin improved skill acquisition in chest compression depth, but only until 6 months after the training. It could be a more effective educational method for basic life support training in laypersons.

Abstract
AIM OF THE STUDY Comprehensive training of the population in basic life support (BLS) increases the chance of survival in cardiac arrest. To implement BLS trainings at schools a high number of instructors will be needed. This non-inferiority study investigated, if online education is effective to prepare instructors to teach BLS compared to face-to-face education. METHODS A cluster randomised, controlled, single blinded study was performed in 2018 in Hamburg, Germany. A mixed group of potential instructors were allocated alternately to either the intervention or control group and participated in a four-hour instructor training. The instructor training of the control group was realised by trained educators. The intervention group participated in a self-regulated online training with hands-on training supported by peers. Instructors provided BLS training for high school students. The primary endpoint was a mean score in the BLS skills assessment of the students. The secondary endpoint was teaching effectiveness of the instructors. RESULTS BLS assessments of 808 students of 46 classes, who were taught by 74 instructors could be analysed. The students trained by interventional instructors achieved 0.14 points less (95% CI: -0.27 to 0.56) compared to students trained by control instructors (9.34 vs. 9.48). The non-inferiority could not be confirmed. The teaching performance in the intervention group was better in some aspects compared to the control group. CONCLUSION Integrating all results of this study, online education may be an effective alternative to prepare potential BLS instructors. Using free online courses, motivated persons can independently acquire necessary skills to become instructors and autonomously realise low cost BLS trainings at schools.

Abstract
Introduction A barrier to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training in low-income countries is limited resources. Our goal was to build a CPR training model of simple design that would provide a good feedback system. Methods We developed a low-cost, Basic Life Support training manikin made entirely of natural rubber. Our in-house manikin provides feedback when performing correct chest compression and rescue breathing. The properties of the manikin were tested using simulated chest compression in a laboratory and compared with a commercial manikin. Forty healthy nurse volunteers with CPR experience performed CPR in both types of manikins and responded to questionnaires. Results A tensile test in a laboratory demonstrated that both types of manikins had acceptable ranges of properties for real-situation CPR in cardiac arrest patients. There were no differences in aesthetic properties, and the manikins felt to the volunteers like a real patient when they were performing chest compression. The feedback response was clear when chest compressions and rescue breathing were performed correctly, and the overall satisfaction with the manikin was good. In addition, the mean scores in terms of the manikin feeling like a real patient when performing rescue breathing and the positive feedback from the rubber manikin were statistically higher than those for the commercial manikin (p=0.001 vs. p=0.023). Conclusion The in-house developed CPR manikin employing real-time feedback by simple mechanics is effective compared with a commercial manikin. The advantage of our manikin is that it is easy to build and costs substantially less than a commercial manikin. The use of an in-house developed manikin could make effective CPR training more available in limited-resource areas.

Abstract
Effectiveness of bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is known to provide emergency medical services which reduce the number of deaths in patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. The survival at these patients is affected by the training level of the bystander, but the best format of CPR training is unclear. In this pilot study, we aimed to examine whether the sequence of CPR instruction improves learning retention on the course materials.A total of 95 participants were recruited and divided into 2 groups; Group 1: 49 participants were taught firstly how to recognize a cardiac arrest and activate the emergency response system, and Group 2: 46 participants were taught chest compression first. The performance of participants was observed and evaluated, the results from 1 pre-test and 2 post-tests between 2 groups were then compared.There was a significantly better improvement of participants in Group 2 regarding the recognition of a cardiac arrest and the activation of the emergency response system than of those in Group 1. At the post-test, participants in Group 2 had an improvement in chest compression compared to those in Group 1, but the difference was not statistically significant.Our study had revealed that teaching CPR first in a standardized public education program had improved the ability of participants to recognize cardiac arrest and to activate the emergency response system.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES Bystander assistance is decisive to enhance the outcomes of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Despite an increasing number of basic life support (BLS) training methods, the most effective formula remains undefined. To identify a gold standard, we performed a systematic review describing reported BLS training methods for laypeople and analyzed their effectiveness. METHODS We reviewed the MEDLINE database from January 2006 to July 2018 using predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, considering all studies training adult laypeople in BLS and performing practical skill assessment. Two reviewers independently extracted data and evaluated the quality of the studies using the MERSQI (Medical Education Research Study Quality Instrument) scale. RESULTS Of the 1263 studies identified, 27 were included. Most of them were nonrandomized controlled trials and the mean quality score was 13 out of 18, with substantial agreement between reviewers. The wide heterogeneity of contents, methods and assessment tools precluded pooling of data. Nevertheless, there was an apparent advantage of instructor-led methods, with feedback-supported hands-on practice, and retraining seemed to enhance retention. Training also improved attitudinal aspects. CONCLUSIONS While there were insufficiently consistent data to establish a gold standard, instructor-led formulas, hands-on training with feedback devices and frequent retraining seemed to yield better results. Further research on adult BLS training may need to seek standardized quality criteria and validated evaluation instruments to ensure consistency.

Abstract
Over the last several years, there has been increasing interest in transitioning a portion of residency education from traditional, lecture-based format to more learner-centered asynchronous opportunities. These asynchronous learning activities were renamed in 2012 by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) as individualized interactive instruction (III). The effectiveness and applicability of III in residency education has been proven by multiple studies, and its routine use has been made officially acceptable as per the ACGME. This article provides a review of the current literature on the implementation and utilization of III in emergency medicine residency education. It provides examples of currently implemented and studied III curricula, identifies those III learning modalities that can be considered best practice, and provides suggestions for program directors to consider when choosing how to incorporate III into their residency teaching.

Abstract
AIM This review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of digital resuscitation training in improving knowledge and skill compared with standard resuscitation training. METHODS We searched through the CINAHL, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, ERIC, ProQuest Dissertations and Thesis, PsycINFO, PubMed and Scopus from inception of our review until 5 March 2018. The quality of individual and overall evidence was evaluated according to the risk of bias, Medical Education Research Study Quality Instrument (MERSQI) and Grade of Recommendation, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) system, respectively. Meta-analyses were performed with the Review Manger software. Z-statistics were used to evaluate the overall effect of training, and I2 test was used to assess heterogeneity. Sensitivity and subgroup analyses were used for additional meta-analyses. RESULTS Amongst the 15,528 studies retrieved, 20 randomised controlled trials (RCTs) were selected from 13 countries across different ethnicities. More than half (52%) of the trials had a low risk of bias, and MERSQI scores ranged from 13.5 to 15.5. The overall quality of evidence was very low according to GRADE criteria. Meta-analyses revealed that trainees in digital resuscitation training had better knowledge scores but poorer chest compression rates than that of trainees in standard resuscitation training. Digital resuscitation trainings were non-inferior to standard resuscitation trainings in skill performance scores. Subgroup analyses suggested that digital resuscitation training might consider using blended learning approach with virtual patient, computer-screen based, learning theories and video-recorded assessment, especially for basic life support trainings amongst health professionals. CONCLUSION Despite the wide variation in digital resuscitation trainings, evidence suggesting the use of digital resuscitation training for improving knowledge and skills is inadequate. Well-designed non-inferiority RCTs in multiple settings with follow-up data and large sample size are needed to ensure the robustness of the evidence.

Abstract
AIM Early basic life support is crucial to enhance survival from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest but rates remain low, especially in households. High-risk groups' training has been advocated, but the optimal method is unclear. The CArdiac REhabilitation and BAsic life Support (CAREBAS) project aims to compare the effectiveness of two basic life support educational strategies implemented in a cardiac rehabilitation program. METHODS A community intervention study including consecutive patients enrolled on an exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation program after acute coronary syndrome or revascularization was conducted. A standard basic life support training (G-Stan) and a novel approach integrating cardiopulmonary resuscitation hands-on rolling refreshers (G-CPR) were randomly assigned to each group and compared. Basic life support performance was assessed by means of simulation at baseline, following brief instruction and after the 2-month program. RESULTS 114 participants were included and 108 completed the final evaluation (G-Stan:58, G-CPR:50). Basic life support performance was equally poor at baseline and significantly improved following a brief instruction. A better skill retention was found after the 2-month program in G-CPR, significantly superior for safety and sending for an automated external defibrillator. Confidence and self-perceived preparation were also significantly greater in G-CPR after the program. CONCLUSIONS Integrating cardiopulmonary resuscitation hands-on rolling refreshers in the training of an exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation program is feasible and improves patients' skill retention and confidence to perform a basic life support sequence, compared to conventional training. Exporting this formula to other programs may result in increased numbers of trained citizens, enhanced social awareness and bystander resuscitation.
