Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the association between passive smoking and physical and psychological health in Chinese nurses. Participants of this cross-sectional study comprised 2,484 non-smoking nurses. Passive smoking and demographic information were assessed using a self-administered questionnaire. Physical, psychological, and overall health status of nurses were measured using the Cornell Medical Index (CMI) health questionnaire. Multivariate-adjusted odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for nurses' health were estimated by exposure to passive smoking using unconditional logistic regression models. A total of 1,219 nurses (49.07%) were exposed to passive smoking. Of these, 609 (24.52%), 160 (6.44%), and 587 (23.63%) nurses had poorer physical, mental, and overall health, respectively. After adjusting for other confounding factors, compared with the non-passive smoking group, passive smoking was associated with poor physical (OR = 1.51, 95% CI: 1.25–1.83), mental (OR = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.07–2.07), and overall (OR = 1.58, 95% CI: 1.30–1.93) health of nurses, respectively. We also carried out subgroup analyses stratified by age, department, and professional title, which showed that most findings supported the main results. This study demonstrated that exposure to passive smoking was a risk factor for overall decreased physical and mental health status among Chinese nurses.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The prevalence of smoking in asthmatic patients is similar to, or even higher than in the general population. OBJECTIVES This systematic review addresses (1) the effects of smoking on asthma, (2) smoking cessation strategies in asthmatic patients, and (3) the consequences of smoking cessation for people with asthma. RESULTS Active or passive smoking can promote the development of asthma. The few studies on smoking cessation in asthma confirm the efficacy of validated smoking cessation strategies in these patients (nicotine replacement therapy, varenicline, bupropion, cognitive and behavioural therapies). Smoking cessation in parents with asthmatic children is essential and is based on the same strategies. Electronic cigarettes may be a useful help to quit smoking in some patients. Smoking cessation is beneficial in asthmatic smokers and associated with (1) a reduction of asthma symptoms, acute exacerbations, bronchial hyperresponsiveness, and bronchial inflammation, (2) decreased use of rescue medications and in doses of inhaled corticosteroids, (3) improved asthma control, quality of life, and lung function. CONCLUSION In asthmatic patients, it is essential to assess smoking status and health professionals must assist them to quit smoking.

Abstract
Aim To investigate the effect of the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown on lifestyle behaviors and mood changes in the Croatian general population. Methods During ten days of the COVID-19 lockdown in Croatia, 3027 respondents (70.3% female) from the general population completed an online, self-report questionnaire. Demographic data and data on lifestyle habits and mood changes before and during the COVID-19 lockdown were collected. Results A total of 95.64% of respondents reported to follow most or all restrictions, with female sex (P < 0.001) and higher education level (P < 0.001) being associated with higher restriction compliance. Women smoked an increased number of cigarettes (P < 0.001). The proportion of respondents of both sexes who did not drink or drank 7 drinks per week or more increased (P < 0.001). Women also reported lower frequency (P = 0.001) and duration of physical exercise (P < 0.001). In total, 30.7% of respondents gained weight, with female sex (OR, 2.726) and higher BMI (OR, 1.116; both P < 0.001) being associated with an increased likelihood of gaining weight. Both men and women felt more frequently afraid (P < 0.001), discouraged (P < 0.001), and sad (P < 0.001). Conclusion Public health authorities should promote the adoption of healthy lifestyles in order to reduce long-term negative effects of the lockdown.

Abstract
Cellular senescence is a complicated process featured by irreversible cell cycle arrest and senescence-associated secreted phenotype (SASP), resulting in accumulation of senescent cells, and low-grade inflammation. Cellular senescence not only occurs during the natural aging of normal cells, but also can be accelerated by various pathological factors. Cumulative studies have shown the role of cellular senescence in the pathogenesis of chronic lung diseases including chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) by promoting airway inflammation and airway remodeling. Recently, great interest has been raised in the involvement of cellular senescence in asthma. Limited but valuable data has indicated accelerating cellular senescence in asthma. This review will compile current findings regarding the underlying relationship between cellular senescence and asthma, mainly through discussing the potential mechanisms of cellular senescence in asthma, the impact of senescent cells on the pathobiology of asthma, and the efficiency and feasibility of using anti-aging therapies in asthmatic patients.

Abstract
In addition to public health measures that need to be strongly supported politically, smoking is also a major medical issue. Tobacco dependence is a chronic disease, and, given its extremely addictive nature, treatment for tobacco dependence must be addressed actively by all health professionals. Because smoking is a major contributor to many of the pathologies their specialties address, cardiologists and pulmonologists must be at the forefront of this care. In this review we analyse the current state of smoking cessation treatment and its inadequacies, the limiting impact that doctors' own smoking has, as well as the misconceptions held by smokers and sometimes by doctors as well, which act as brakes on smoking cessation. Smoking cessation must become a treatment delivered in real clinical practice and any doctor must know how to manage it fluently. Do not be satisfied with simply advising smokers to quit. Learn how to approach the subject with smokers effectively, know how the various pharmacotherapies are used and know how to organize smoking cessation follow-up, an essential guarantee of success. If optimal management of this major pathological factor is a role for all doctors, it is of course especially so for our two specialties. It's up to us, cardiologists and pulmonologists, to take up this challenge.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The midwife, in taking on a public health role, is one of the most important resources for the prevention of smoking and in helping smoking cessation among women of childbearing age thanks to their numerous contacts with pregnant women. With this in mind, we conducted a study among student midwives to examine their smoking behavior, their attitudes towards smoking, and their participation in prevention. METHOD This was a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted from 15 January to 15 February 2018 using a self-administered questionnaire and included the student midwives of the University of Health Science at Libreville (Gabon). RESULTS A total of 188 student midwives completed the questionnaires (70.7% of students of the 1st year, 15.0% of students of the 2nd year and 14.3% of students of the 3rd year). Gaps exist in the knowledge of student midwives regarding the risks of cigarette smoking in pregnancy and its role in the development of complications for the mother and foetus. Overall, 17.1% of student midwives think that smoking is responsible for the occurrence of ectopic pregnancies, 20.3% believe it is responsible for retro-placental haematoma, 17.6% for premature rupture of the membranes. The prevalence of smoking was 11.1% and was most frequent in 2nd year students (25.0%) and 3rd year students (14.8%) (P<0.023). The mean age of beginning smoking was 19.0±4.4 years. The main initiating factors were peer influence (28.6%), pleasure (19.0%) and stress (14.3%). Nicotine dependence was weak to moderate among 48.8% of smokers and absent in 52.2%. CONCLUSION Gaps exist in the knowledge of student midwives regarding the risks of cigarette smoking to complications of pregnancy. There is need therefore to include formal training on tobacco control strategies at an early stage in the medical curriculum.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Binge drinking and continued alcohol use in large amounts are associated with many health problems but there are very few studies on the effects of alcohol intake on the function of lung, the effects of ethanol on lung diseases, and links between alcohol consumption and lung cancer. Therefore, our knowledge of these interactions from pathophysiological, clinical and epidemiological aspects is poor. BACKGROUND Acute alcohol exposure stimulates the beating of the cilia of mucociliary epithelium cells but the effects of chronic ethanol over-exposure are different, with a progressive desensitization of ciliary response: ethanol exposure reduces airway mucociliary clearance. As a result this important innate primary defense mechanism, which protects the lungs from the deleterious effects of different pollutants, allergens and pathogens, is weakened. Chronic alcohol exposure alters the adaptative immune response to pathogens (decreasing the phagocytic function of macrophages) and leads to an inflammatory response (pro-inflammatory cytokines). Respiratory function is impaired by alcohol misuse: asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung infections, and the acute respiratory distress syndrome are more frequent and severe. It is difficult to establish a causal link between alcohol and lung cancer as the lung cancer risk is likely confounded by the effect of smoking. Very few studies among never smokers have been conducted until now and the results are not consistent: they are therefore necessary to confirm or refute whether lung cancer is attributable to alcohol misuse. CONCLUSION The pulmonary effects of alcohol misuse are many but further investigations into the mechanism by which alcohol might predispose to lung cancer are necessary.

Abstract
A marked increase in the morbidity and mortality of a large number of broncho-pulmonary diseases has been documented in relation to smoking. The influence of tobacco smoking on various respiratory conditions. is discussed: incidence, severity or natural history modification of some respiratory illnesses: obstructive lung diseases (COPD, asthma), lung cancer, bacterial, viral respiratory infections, with the impact of smoking on tuberculosis. Finally, the relationship of tobacco with diffuse interstitial lung disease: protective role of smoking (controversial in sarcoidosis, real in hypersensitivity pneumonitis). The benefits of smoking cessation are described.

Abstract
Smoking is the cause of addictive behavior. Tobacco addiction is a chronic disease that makes difficult to stop smoking and leads to further use. Smoking is a risk factor for COPD, asthma and lung cancer; it may be the cause of severe perioperative complications. This finding justifies that smokers benefit from advice of stopping smoking and smoking cessation assistance. Helping patients to stop smoking increases the chances of quitting, improves the prognosis of tobacco-related diseases, the effectiveness of their treatments and the quality of life of the patients. This article updates the modalities of smoking cessation assistance in smokers with COPD, asthma and lung cancer in operated patients. The goal of the management must be the complete cessation of tobacco smoke intoxication, which alone reduces tobacco mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES There has been no clear consensus about whether prenatal exposure to air pollution contributes to the development of wheezing and asthma in children. We conducted a systematic review to analyze the association between exposure to different pollutants during pregnancy and the development of childhood wheezing and asthma. METHODS We systematically reviewed epidemiological studies published through June 6, 2017 available in the MEDLINE and Web of Science databases. We included studies that examined the association between prenatal exposure to any air pollutants except tobacco smoke and the incidence or prevalence of "wheezing" or "asthma" from birth to 14 years of age. We extracted key characteristics of each included study using a template of predefined data items. We used the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme checklists to assess the validity of each included study. We conducted overall and subgroup meta-analyses for each summary exposure-outcome association. Pooled odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated by using a random effects model. RESULTS Eighteen studies met our eligibility criteria. There was notable variability in exposure assessment methods. The overall random effects risk estimates (95% CI) of different pollutants were 1.04 (0.94-1.15) aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), 1.04 (1.01-1.07) NO2, 1.4 (0.97-2.03) PM2.5 for childhood wheeze and 1.07 (1.01-1.14) NO2, 1 (0.97-1.03) PM2.5, 1.02 (0.98-1.07) SO2, 1.08 (1.05-1.12) PM10 for childhood asthma. Minimal heterogeneity was seen for PAH and SO2, while some heterogeneity was observed for PM10, PM2.5 and NO2. CONCLUSIONS The overall and subgroup risk estimates from the meta-analyses showed statistically significant associations between prenatal exposures to NO2, SO2, and PM10 and the risk of wheezing and asthma development in childhood. There is insufficient evidence to show an effect of prenatal exposure to BC, CO, and O3 on childhood wheezing and asthma. Further studies are needed to examine the individual compounds' effects.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Many studies have suggested exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) is a risk factor for various somatic diseases, but only few studies based on small sample size or specific groups have explored the association between passive smoking and mental distress. We performed this study to examine the relationship between passive smoking and mental distress in adult never-smokers of north-east China. METHODS Multistage, stratified random cluster sampling design was used in this cross-sectional study in 2012. A total of 12 978 never-smokers from Jilin, north-east China, were included. Data on passive smoking and baseline characteristics were collected by face-to-face interviews. The 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) was used to measure mental health status. Rao-Scott χ(2) tests were used to compare the prevalence between different groups; multivariable logistic regression was used to assess the association between passive smoking and mental distress, and Spearman rank analysis was employed to assess the correlation between passive smoking and GHQ-12 scores. RESULTS The estimated prevalence of mental distress among never-smokers in Jilin province is 24.5%, and the estimated prevalence of passive smoking among the mental distressing group is 65.0%. After adjusting for gender, age, region, body mass index (BMI), occupation, marriage, education, drinking status and family monthly income per capita, passive smoking conferred a risk for mental distress (adjusted OR=1.26, 95% CI 1.13 to 1.40). A high proportion of adults, especially women, were passive smokers at home, but for men, passive smoking was more common at workplace. The more frequently participants exposed to SHS, the higher GHQ-12 scores they got. CONCLUSIONS Passive smoking is an important risk factor for mental distress in never-smokers of Jilin province, which reminds Chinese government of increasing the awareness of public health and take measure to prevent SHS, especially with regard to SHS exposure at home and workplace.
