Cyclodextrin polymer/Fe3O4 nanocomposites as solid phase extraction material coupled with UV-vis spectrometry for the analysis of rutin

Determination of bioactive flavonoids using β-cyclodextrin combined with chitosan-modified magnetic nanoparticles

To accurately determine flavonoids (rutin, quercetin or kaempferol), it is necessary to extract them from complex matrices. The ultrasound-assisted magnetic dispersion microsolid phase extraction technique has been predominantly used for separation and enrichment of the target analytes. The combination of magnetic chitosan nanoparticles and a deep eutectic supramolecular solvent (DESP) is likely to enhance the efficiency of flavonoid extraction from food. In this study, adsorbents were prepared by modifying chitosan with magnetic nanoparticles, and the eluent was a DESP derived from β-cyclodextrin and an organic acid. The successful preparation of these materials was confirmed by FTIR, XRD, FE-SEM and 1H NMR. The extraction recovery rates exceeded 93 %, with limits of detection and quantitation ranging from 0.9 to 2.4 μg/L and 2.7 to 7.2 μg/L, respectively, and the flavonoid clearance rates for ABTS and DPPH radicals reached 100 %. Therefore, the integration of magnetic chitosan nanoparticles with the DESP provides a new and efficient method for the extraction of flavonoids while also presenting a potential application of the DESP in separations.

A new class of layered Bi2O2S nanopetals by one-pot supercritical-CO2 approach: A reliable electrocatalyst for analgesic bioflavonoid detection

Nanomaterials frequently draw a lot of interest in a variety of disciplines, including electrochemistry. Developing a reliable electrode modifier for the selective electrochemical detection of the analgesic bioflavonoid i.e., Rutinoside (RS) is a great challenge. Here in, we have explored the supercritical-CO₂ (SC-CO₂) mediated synthesis of bismuth oxysulfide (SC-BiOS) and reported it as a robust electrode modifier for the detection of RS. For a comparison study, the same preparation procedure was carried out in the conventional approach (C-BiS). The morphology, crystallography, optical, and elemental contribution analyses were characterized to understand the paradigm shift in the physicochemical properties between SC-BiOS and C-BiS. The results exposed the C-BiS had a nano-rod-like structure with a crystallite size of 11.57 nm; whereas the SC-BiOS had a nano-petal-like structure with a crystallite size of 9.03 nm. The B_2g mode in the optical analysis confirms the formation of bismuth oxysulfide by the SC-CO₂ method with the Pmnn space group. As an electrode modifier, the SC-BiOS achieved a higher effective surface area (0.074 cm²), higher electron transfer kinetics (0.13 cm s^-1), and lower charge transfer resistance (403 Ω) than C-BiS. Further, it provided a wide linear range of 0.1-610.5 μM L^-1 with a low detection and quantification limit of 9 and 30nM L^-1 and an appreciable sensitivity of 0.706 μA μM^-1 cm^-2. The selectivity, repeatability, and real-time application towards the environmental water sample with a recovery of 98.87% were anticipated for the SC-BiOS. This SC-BiOS unlocks a fresh avenue to construct a design for the family of electrode modifiers utilized in electrochemical applications.

Construction of a Near-Infrared Luminescent 48-Metal Rectangular Zn(II)-Yb(III) Nanocluster with Carbonate Templates for the Dual-Emissive Detection of Rutin as a Medicinal Ingredient

An interesting 48-metal Zn(II)-Yb(III) nanocluster (1) with a size of about 1.3 × 2.8 × 3.1 nm was constructed by carbonate templates from a Schiff base ligand. It exhibits ligand-centered emission and near-infrared (NIR) luminescence of Yb(III), which are used in the dual-emissive detection of rutin (Rut) with high sensitivity even in the presence of other interferences. The response behavior can be expressed by the second-order equation I_980 nm/I_510 nm = A*[Rut]² + B*[Rut] + C, and the limits of detection to Rut for the emissions of 1 are 2.23 μM and 0.20 nM.

Novel biomass-derived porous-graphitic carbon coated iron oxide nanocomposite as an efficient electrocatalyst for the sensitive detection of rutin (vitamin P) in food and environmental samples

Design and development of inexpensive, portable, and eco-friendly electrochemical non-enzymatic sensors with high selectivity and sensitivity is pivotal in analytical chemistry. In this regard, we have developed a highly porous graphitic-activated carbon (GAC, derived from tamarind fruit shell biomass) coated iron oxide (Fe₂O₃) nanocomposite (Fe₂O₃/GAC) for the efficient detection of rutin (vitamin p). Fe₂O₃/GAC nanocomposite was prepared using a facile green synthesis method and thoroughly characterized using SEM, XRD, and XPS techniques. As-prepared Fe₂O₃/GAC nanocomposite was deposited over a screen printed electrode (SPE) to fabricate Fe₂O₃/GAC/SPE and utilized as a non-enzymatic sensor for the electrochemical determination of rutin in food and environmental samples. The modified electrode was characterized using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques, which witnessed the excellent conductivity of the developed sensor. The fabricated Fe₂O₃/GAC/SPE nanocomposite exhibited a set of redox peaks in the presence of rutin, corresponding to the electrochemical redox feature of rutin (rutin to 3',4'-diquinone). Further, the modified electrode displayed excellent electrocatalytic characteristics towards the oxidation of rutin, based on which a differential pulse voltammetry-based sensor was developed for rutin determination. The developed non-enzymatic sensor has shown prominent performance towards rutin detection in a wide linear range from 0.1 to 130 μM with an excellent detection limit of 0.027 μM. The enhanced electrocatalytic response could be ascribed to the synergistic effect of Fe₂O₃ and GAC on the developed probe. Moreover, the developed sensor was successfully utilized for real-time detection of rutin in various samples.

Phenylpropanoids in Silybum marianum cultures treated with cyclodextrins coated with magnetic nanoparticles

The glucose oligosaccharide-derived cyclodextrins (CDs) are used for improving bioactive compound production in plant cell cultures because, in addition to their elicitation activity, CDs promote product removal from cells. However, despite these advantages, the industrial application of CDs is hampered by their high market price. A strategy to overcome this constraint was recently tested, in which reusable CD polymers coated with magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles were harnessed in Vitis vinifera cell cultures to produce t-resveratrol (t-R). In this study, we applied hydroxypropyl-β-CDs (HPCD) and HPCDs coated with magnetic nanoparticles (HPCD-EPI-MN) in methyl jasmonate (MJ)-treated transgenic Silybum marianum cultures ectopically expressing either a stilbene synthase gene (STS) or a chalcone synthase gene (CHS), and compared their effects on the yields of t-R and naringenin (Ng), respectively. HPCD-EPI-MN at 15 g/L stimulated the accumulation of metabolites in the culture medium of the corresponding transgenic cell lines, with up to 4 mg/L of t-R and 3 mg/L of Ng released after 3 days. Similar amounts were produced in cultures treated with HPCD. Concentrations higher than 15 g/L of HPCD-EPI-MN and prolonged incubation periods negatively affected cell growth and viability in both transgenic cell lines. Reutilization of HPCD-EPI-MN was possible in three elicitation cycles (72 h each), after which the polymer retained 25-30% of its initial efficiency, indicating good stability and reusability. Due to their capacity to adsorb metabolites and their recyclability, the application of magnetic CD polymers may reduce the costs of establishing efficient secondary metabolite production systems on a commercial scale. Advances and Classification of Cyclodextrin-Based Polymers for Food-Related Issues

Cyclodextrins (CDs) are a good alternative to reduce or enhance different biomolecule characteristics and have demonstrated great results in food science. However, CDs present intrinsic limitations that can be solved by derivative synthesis. This review represents a survey of the state of the art of CD-based materials and their uses in food science. A deep review of the structure is carried out and different groups for ordination are suggested. After that, different applications such as cholesterol complexation or its use as sensors are reviewed. The derivatives show novel and promising activities for the industry. A critical perspective of the materials suggests that they might not present toxicity, although more studies are required. These points suggest that the research in this field will be increased in the following years.

A facile fabrication of a hierarchical ZIF-8/MWCNT nanocomposite for the sensitive determination of rutin

In this paper, a novel type of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) polyhedron/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) modified electrode was successfully prepared for effective on-site detection of rutin. The morphology and microstructure of the ZIF-8/MWCNT nanocomposite were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The electrochemical performance of the ZIF-8/MWCNT based electrode for the determination of rutin was studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse stripping voltammetry (DPV). The as-prepared sensor illustrates better electrocatalytic activity and lower background current than the MWCNT modified electrode for the oxidation of rutin. Besides, the ZIF-8/MWCNTs sensor offers a remarkable linear response for rutin concentrations from 0.1 to 15 μM. The detection limit (LOD) was calculated to be 0.26 nM (S/N = 3). Also, the ZIF-8/MWCNT electrode showed high anti-interference ability towards common interfering species. More importantly, the fabricated electrode was quickly evaluated for determination of rutin in medicine tablets with satisfactory recoveries and the obtained results successfully achieved good consistency with the data from high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Finally, the method shows an enhanced electrocatalytic property and sensitivity for the analysis of rutin, which may provide an economical and promising electrochemical sensor for practical on-site detection of rutin.

Recent advances and applications of cyclodextrins in magnetic solid phase extraction

Cyclodextrins (CDs) as a family of cyclic oligosaccharides are toroidal with a hydrophobic interior and a hydrophilic exterior. They are well-known for their ability to form host-guest inclusion complexes with different compounds. They are used as chiral stationary phases in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography (GC) or as chiral reagents in the background electrolyte of capillary electrophoresis (CE). In recent years, they have been used for modification of sorbents or as sorbents in solid phase extraction (SPE) procedures. Magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE), as a new type of SPE procedure, has received considerable attention due to its rapid phase separation process as compared to traditional extraction mode. This review covers the synthesis of CD-based magnetic sorbents (such as immobilization of CDs onto the different supports, production of nanosponges, and making hybrid substances with nanomaterials) and the use of these compounds in MSPE of different analytes from biological, environmental, and food samples. Also, prospects of CD-based sorbents for sample pre-treatment are also proposed.

Facile combinations of thiosulfate and zerovalent iron synergically immobilize cadmium in soils through mild extraction and facilitated immobilization

Cadmium (Cd) is one of the most toxic substances released in the environment. Cd-contaminated soils usually have a large pool of bioavailable Cd species and lead to excessive Cd accumulation in planted cereal crops. Treatment methods for stable immobilization of Cd in soils are desirable. Here we reported that facile combinations of thiosulfate (STS) and zerovalent iron (ZVI) reinforced Cd immobilization in soils and reduced Cd accumulation in wheat. STS mildly activated Cd in soils through the formation of soluble Cd(S₂O₃)_x complexes, whereas intermediates of STS (e.g., sulfate and sulfides) and ZVI synergically facilitated immobilization of Cd in soils. The synergy was ascribed to the facilitated formation of FeOOH with high Cd-binding affinity and formation of stable sulfate-Cd-FeOOH complexes and poorly available CdS_x. STS-ZVI treatments increased residual Cd in soils by 101-123% and decreased Cd accumulation in wheat shoots by 13-68%, depending on chemical compositions and doses of binary reagents. Field applications of STS and ZVI (0.06-0.11 kg/m²) demonstrated 24-39% reductions of grain Cd.

Cyclodextrins and inorganic nanoparticles: Another tale of synergy

In this review, we summarize the recent research focused on the combination of inorganic nanoparticles and α-, β- and γ- cyclodextrins. Our intention is to highlight the most relevant publications on the synthesis of nanoparticle-cyclodextrin (NP-CD) nanohybrids, with CDs acting as reducing agents or through the post-synthetic modification of inorganic nanoparticles with CDs. We also discuss the new or enhanced properties that arise from the host-guest capabilities of the CDs and inorganic nanoparticles. Finally, we illustrate the potential applications of these materials in numerous research fields.

Cyclodextrins as a Key Piece in Nanostructured Materials: Quantitation and Remediation of Pollutants

Separation and pre-concentration of trace pollutants from their matrix by reversible formation of inclusion complexes has turned into a widely studied field, especially for the benefits provided to different areas. Cyclodextrins are non-toxic oligosaccharides that are well known for their host–guest chemistry, low prices, and negligible environmental impact. Therefore, they have been widely used as chiral selectors and delivery systems in the pharmaceutical and food industry over time. However, their use for extraction purposes is hampered by their high solubility in water. This difficulty is being overcome with a variety of investigations in materials science. The setting-up of novel solid sorbents with improved properties thanks to the presence of cyclodextrins at their structure is still an open research area. Some properties they can offer, such as an increased selectivity or a good distribution along the surface of a solid support, which provides better accessibility for guest molecules, are characteristics of great interest. This systematic review reports the most significant uses of cyclodextrins for the adsorption of pollutants in different-origin samples based on the works reported in the literature in the last years. The study has been carried out indistinctly for quantitation and remediation purposes.

Widespread applications of host-guest interactive cyclodextrin functionalized polymer nanocomposites: Its meta-analysis and review

Cyclodextrins are cyclic oligosaccharides, having tyroid shape of the molecule which has a hydrophobic cavity and outer hydrophilic surface. This characteristic feature of the dextrins allows it to function as a functionalizing as well as a stabilizing agent. Polymer nanocomposites are nanoscale composites of polymers with enhanced and synergized properties of its components and have been known to have applications in various fields of chemistry, biomedical, pharmaceutical and environmental purposes to name a few. To impart specificity, thermal, mechanical stability, resistance to solvents and biodegradability to the polymers, cyclodextrins have been incorporated in the nanocomposites. The utilization of the aforementioned properties of cyclodextrins to the polymer nanocomposites, implications of the incorporation of cyclodextrins to polymer nanocomposites and their subsequent applications in various fields have been discussed in this review systematically, using PRISMA guidelines.

A Smart Strategy to Improve t-Resveratrol Production in Grapevine Cells Treated with Cyclodextrin Polymers Coated with Magnetic Nanoparticles

One of the most successfully procedures used to increase the production of t-resveratrol in Vitis vinifera suspension-cultured cells is the application of cyclodextrins (CDs) and methyl jasmonate (MJ) as elicitors. In particular, β-CDs are characterized by their chemical structure which makes them special, not only by acting as elicitors, but also because they are compounds capable of trapping high added-value hydrophobic molecules such as t-resveratrol. However, the use of β-CDs as elicitors increases the production costs of this compound, making their industrial exploitation economically unfeasible. Therefore, the development of β-CDs recovery strategies is necessary to provide a viable solution to their industrial use. In this work, carboxymethylated and hydroxypropylated β-CDs have been used to form polymers using epichlorohydrin (EPI) as a cross-linking agent. The polymers were coated to Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles and were jointly used with MJ to elicit V. vinifera suspension-cultured cells. Once elicitation experiments were finished, a magnet easily allowed the recovery of polymers, and t-resveratrol was extracted from them by using ethyl acetate. The results indicated that the production of t-resveratrol in the presence of free carboxymethyl-β-CDs was much lower than that found in the presence of carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrins-EPI polymer coated magnetic nanoparticles. In addition, the maximal levels of t-resveratrol were found at 168 h of elicitation in the presence of 15 g/L hydroxypropyl-β-CDs polymer coated magnetic nanoparticles and MJ, and non-t-resveratrol was found in the extracellular medium, indicating that all the t-resveratrol produced by the cells and secreted into the culture medium was trapped by the polymer and extracted from it. This work also showed that polymers can be regenerated and reused during three cycles of continuous elicitation since the induction and adsorption capacity of hydroxypropyl-β-CDs polymer-coated magnetic nanoparticles after these cycles of elicitation remained high, allowing high concentrations of t-resveratrol to be obtained.

Magnetic solid phase extraction based on poly(β-cyclodextrin-ester) functionalized silica-coated magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) for simultaneous extraction of the malachite green and crystal violet from aqueous samples

In this research, an efficient sorbent based on poly(β-cyclodextrin-ester)-functionalized silica-coated magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs-CDP) was prepared and used for magnetic solid-phase extraction of the malachite green (MG) and crystal violet (CV) from water samples prior to their determination by high-performance liquid chromatography-ultra violet detection (HPLC-UV). The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by the field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Of course, the factors, which could influence the extraction efficiency like pH, sorbent amount, salt content, extraction time, desorption time, eluent type, and volume and sample volume, were optimized by response surface methodology. Then, for both of MG and CV, good linearity (0.1-200 μg L^-1, r² ≥ 0.99) was achieved under the optimized conditions. The limits of detection (LODs) and the limits of quantification (LOQs), for both of MG and CV, were 0.03 μg L^-1 and 0.1 μg L^-1, respectively. Precision of the method expressed as the relative standard deviations (RSDs) at concentration level of 100 μg L^-1 was 5.6 and 4.2 for MG and CV, respectively. Ultimately, usability of proposed method was investigated by analysis of CV and MG in tap water, fish pond water, and the lake water, and the satisfactory recoveries were obtained in the range of 92-100.5%.

Efficiency comparison of nylon-6-based solid-phase and stir bar sorptive extractors for carbamazepine extraction

Aim: Two approaches based on molecularly imprinted polymers-stir bar sorptive extraction (MIP-SBSE) and -magnetic solid-phase extraction (MIP-MSPE) have been used for extraction of carbamazepine (CBZ) from serum samples. Methodology: In MSPE and SBSE, development was achieved by employing a polycaprolactam coating. The Cecil® chromatographic system equipped with a UV-Vis detector was used for analytical determination of CBZ. Results: The linearity of calibration curves was in the concentration ranges of 0.2–12 and 0.05–12 μg ml-1 for MIP-SBSE and MIP-MSPE, respectively. Conclusion: MIP-MSPE was selected in preference to MIP-SBSE since lower limits of detection were achievable using MIP-MSPE method. The CBZ-MIP-MSPE-HPLC-UV method was successfully applied to CBZ determination in real serum samples of patients receiving CBZ.

Fabrication of Fe3O4-based ternary magnetic microsphere catalysts based on supramolecular chemistry and their catalytic performance

In this paper, magnetic catalysts were successfully synthesized using host–guest chemistry and a self-assembly strategy.

Synthesis and characterization of optically active magnetic PAI/Fe3O4 nanocomposites

This work presents the preparation and characterization of hybrid organic-inorganic optically active poly(amide-imide)/nano-Fe₃O₄ composites with different amount of modified Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles as new nanocomposites by ultrasonic irradiation and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis and vibrating sample magnetometry. The surface of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles was modified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxyl silane because of the homogeneous distribution of nano-Fe₃O₄ in polymer matrix, which the SEM results confirmed that the Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles were dispersed uniformly in polymer matrix. Furthermore, as compared with pure polymer, thermogravimetric analysis data indicated an improvement of thermal stability of nanocomposites.

A study on the removal of propyl, butyl, and benzyl parabens via newly synthesised ionic liquid loaded magnetically confined polymeric mesoporous adsorbent

This study investigated the effectiveness of ionic liquids (ILs) loaded onto the surface of a polymeric adsorbent (βCD-TDI) grafted with modified magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) via an analysis of water treatment, which resulted in high removal of selected endocrine-disrupting chemicals (parabens). The syntheses of MNPs, MNP-βCD-TDI, and IL-MNP-βCD-TDI were characterised and compared using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, carbon-hydrogen-nitrogen (CHN) analysis, vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results of SEM and TEM indicated that the pore size distribution exhibited mesoporous characteristics with a small surface area (BET analysis: 42.95 m2 g-1). Furthermore, a preliminary sorption experiment demonstrated the ability of IL-MNP-βCD-TDI to enhance not only the sorption capacity, but also the removal of propyl paraben (PP), butyl paraben (BP), and benzyl paraben (ArP). The adsorption process appeared to be pH-dependent, and hence the optimum pH of 6 was selected for a subsequent batch adsorption study of all the studied parabens with an equilibrium time of 80 min. Next, in an attempt to investigate the interactions that occur between the adsorbent and the adsorbates, adsorption kinetics and isotherm studies were performed. All the studied parabens were found to best fit pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Freundlich isotherm with R 2 > 0.98 at room temperature (298 K). The interaction of the host-guest inclusion complex and the π-π interaction between βCD and a selected paraben compound (ArP) were identified by performing 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), together with ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopic analysis. Finally, the adsorption efficiency of the developed material was practically tested on tap water, drain water, and industrial wastewater, which revealed a significant removal of parabens of up to 60-90% in comparison with a prior analysis.

Microwave assisted solid phase extraction for separation preconcentration sulfamethoxazole in wastewater using tyre based activated carbon as solid phase material prior to spectrophotometric determination

This work was chiefly encouraged by the continuous consumption of antibiotics which eventually pose harmful effects on animals and human beings when present in water systems. In this study, the activated carbon (AC) was used as a solid phase material for the removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in wastewater samples. The microwave assisted solid phase extraction (MASPE) as a sample extraction method was employed to better extract SMX in water samples and finally the analysis of SMX was done by the UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The microwave assisted solid phase extraction method was optimized using a two-level fractional factorial design by evaluating parameters such as pH, mass of adsorbent (MA), extraction time (ET), eluent ratio (ER) and microwave power (MP). Under optimized conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were 0.5μgL^-1 and 1.7μgL^-1, respectively, and intraday and interday precision expressed in terms of relative standard deviation were >6%.The maximum adsorption capacity was 138mgg^-1 for SMX and the adsorbent could be reused eight times. Lastly, the MASPE method was applied for the removal of SMX in wastewater samples collected from a domestic wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and river water.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Application of Partially Blocked Amine-Functionalized Magnetic Nanoparticles

In this study, a novel technique was introduced for selective surface modification of amine-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles. The method was based on alignment of magnetic nanoparticles in an external magnetic field, which resulted in formation of chain-like assemblies in diluted suspensions. The aligned chains were then modified on the surface via reaction of isocyanate species with the particle functionalities. Finally, after removal from the reactor medium, particles with segmented distribution of surface functionalities were achieved. We named these partially blocked amine-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles as "Saturn" nanoparticles. Application of the particles in fabrication of magnetic assemblies was successfully demonstrated. Using methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) as the bridging agent, structures in different forms such as chains and filaments were produced by the Saturn particles and compared with cross-linked structures of the unmodified amine-functionalized particles. It is expected that this novel nanoparticle with its unique structure will have great potential in assembly fabrication with a variety of applications in biomedical fields.

Enhanced photo-electrochemical response of reduced graphene oxide and C3N4 nanosheets for rutin detection

Herein, a sensitive photo-electrochemical sensor based on C₃N₄ and reduced graphene oxide nanosheets modified glassy carbon electrode (C₃N₄-RGO/GCE) has been fabricated for the detection of rutin under UV light illumination. In C₃N₄-RGO catalyst, RGO not only works as a template but also promotes electron transfer, meanwhile, C₃N₄ acts as a photocatalyst. Benefiting from the superior electron transfer capacity and efficient UV light effect of the C₃N₄-RGO catalyst, we get a photo-electrochemical sensor for the rutin detecting with a low detection limit of 1.78×10^-9molL^-1 and an excellent linear range of 5×10^-9-1.4×10^-4molL^-1. Meanwhile, the achieved C₃N₄-RGO/GCE demonstrated nice selectivity, good reproducibility as well as reliable stability. Moreover, compared with the electrochemical determination, the C₃N₄-RGO electrode provides a new way for rutin detection by photo-electrochemical method with a promising UV light responsive result.

Magnetic Solid-Phase Extraction Using Fe3O4@SiO2 Magnetic Nanoparticles Followed by UV-Vis Spectrometry for Determination of Paraquat in Plasma and Urine Samples

A rapid and simple method was optimized and validated for the separation and quantification of paraquat, a frequently used herbicide and a leading cause of fatal poisoning worldwide, at trace levels with UV-Vis spectrophotometry in plasma and urine samples by direct magnetic solid-phase extraction. Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ nanoparticles (NPs) were used as the magnetic solid-phase extraction agents and the paraquat absorbed on NPs was eluted using NaOH and ascorbic acid. Upon optimization, paraquat could be extracted and concentrated from various samples by 35-fold. The linear range, limit of detection (LOD), correlation coefficient (R), and relative standard deviation (RSD) could reach 15.0-400.0 μg/L, 12.2 μg/L, 0.9987, and 0.65% (n = 5, c = 40.0 μg/L), respectively. The Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ NPs could be reused up to five times. The method was successfully applied to the determination of paraquat in urine and plasma at different hemoperfusion numbers in a local hospital for the patient of paraquat poisoning. The experiment result could not only enable immediate medical intervention but also benefit patients' survival.

Monodispersed hollow polymer/iron eutectic nanoparticles with the size range of 18–30 nm were prepared by a simple method. These particles can be applied in chemical catalysis and nanoreactors.

Magnetic solid-phase extraction based on modified ferum oxides for enrichment, preconcentration, and isolation of pesticides and selected pollutants

Recently, a simple, rapid, high-efficiency, selective, and sensitive method for isolation, preconcentration, and enrichment of analytes has been developed. This new method of sample handling is based on ferum oxides as magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and has been used for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of various analytes from various matrices. This review focuses on the applications of modified ferum oxides, especially modified Fe3O4 MNPs, as MSPE adsorbent for pesticide isolation from various matrices. Further perspectives on MSPE based on modified Fe3O4 for inorganic metal ions, organic compounds, and biological species from water samples are also presented. Ferum(III) oxide MNPs (Fe2O3) are also highlighted.

Complex of rutin with β-cyclodextrin as potential delivery system

This study aimed to obtain and characterize an RU-β-CD complex in the context of investigating the possibility of changes in the solubility, stability, antioxidative and microbiological activity as well as permeability of complexated rutin as against its free form. The formation of the RU-β-CD complex via a co-grinding technique was confirmed by using DSC, SEM, FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy, and its geometry was assessed through molecular modeling. It was found that the stability and solubility of the so-obtained complex were greater compared to the free form; however, a slight decrease was observed inits antibacterial potency. An examination of changes in the EPR spectra of thecomplex excluded any reducing effect of complexation on the antioxidative activity of rutin. Considering the prospect of preformulation studies involving RU-β-CD complexes, of significance is also the observed possibility of prolongedly releasing rutin from the complex at a constant level over along period of 20 h, and the fact that twice as much complexated rutin was able topermeate compared to its free form.

Ionic liquid coated magnetic core/shell Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles for the separation/analysis of linuron in food samples

Three hydrophobic ionic liquids (ILs) including 1-butyl-3-methylimidazole hexafluorophosphate ([BMIM]PF6), 1-hexyl-3-methyl-imidazole hexafluorophosphate ([HMIM]PF6), and 1-octyl-3-methylimidazole hexafluoro-phosphate ([OMIM]PF6) coated Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles with core-shell structure to prepare magnetic solid phase extraction agent (Fe3O4@SiO2@ILs) and establish a new method of magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) coupled with UV spectrometry for separation/analysis of linuron. The results showed that linuron was adsorbed rapidly by Fe3O4@SiO2@[OMIM]PF6 and eluanted by ethanol. Under the optimal conditions, preconcentration factor of the proposed method was 10-fold. The linear range, detection limit, correlation coefficient (R) and relative standard deviation (RSD) were found to be 0.04-20.00 μg mL(-1), 5.0 ng mL(-1), 0.9993 and 2.8% (n=3, c=4.00 μg mL(-1)), respectively. The Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles could be used repeatedly for 10 times. This proposed method has been successfully applied to the determination of linuron in food samples.

Preparation of biocompatible magnetite-carboxymethyl cellulose nanocomposite: characterization of nanocomposite by FTIR, XRD, FESEM and TEM

The preparation and characterization of magnetite-carboxymethyl cellulose nano-composite (M-CMC) material is described. Magnetite nano-particles were synthesized by a modified co-precipitation method using ferrous chloride tetrahydrate and ferric chloride hexahydrate in ammonium hydroxide solution. The M-CMC nano-composite particles were synthesized by embedding the magnetite nanoparticles inside carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) using a freshly prepared mixture of Fe3O4 with CMC precursor. Morphology, particle size, and structural properties of magnetite-carboxymethyl cellulose nano-composite was accomplished using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) analysis. As a result, magnetite nano-particles with an average size of 35nm were obtained. The biocompatible Fe3O4-carboxymethyl cellulose nano-composite particles obtained from the natural CMC polymers have a potential range of application in biomedical field.

Inclusion and functionalization of polymers with cyclodextrins: current applications and future prospects

The numerous hydroxyl groups available in cyclodextrins are active sites that can form different types of linkages. They can be crosslinked with one another, or they can be derivatized to produce monomers that can form linear or branched networks. Moreover, they can form inclusion complexes with polymers and different substrates, modifying their physicochemical properties. This review shows the different applications using polymers with cyclodextrins, either by forming inclusion complexes, ternary complexes, networks, or molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). On one hand, the use of cyclodextrins enhances the properties of each polymer, and on the other the use of polymers decreases the amount of cyclodextrins required in different formulations. Both cyclodextrins and polymers contribute synergistically in several applications such as pharmacological, nutritional, environmental, and other industrial fields. The use of polymers based on cyclodextrins is a low cost easy to use potential tool with great future prospects.
