Abstract
The combination of an optical probe and single-drop direct immersion microextraction (DI-SDME-OP) was used for the preconcentration and subsequent spectrophotometric determination of rhodamine 6G (Rh6G). The developed method is based on the formation of an ionic associate between Rh6G and picric acid at pH 3.0 and its extraction with amyl acetate. A microdrop of the organic phase was stably placed in the hole of an optical probe immersed in the sample solution. The absorbance of the extraction phase was monitored at 534 nm. The proposed method combines in a single step several stages of the analytical procedure, such as pre-concentration, phase separation, transfer of the extraction phase to the instrument and online measurement. The sensitivity of the proposed approach is not inferior to existing microextraction methods involving the combination of liquid-phase or solid-phase extraction with spectrophotometry or HPLC with a UV-Vis detector. The evaluation of the greenness of the developed method carried out by the AGREE method (0.58 points) showed that it outperforms other similar existing techniques using this parameter. The calibration plot for the determination of Rh6G by the DI-SDME-OP method was linear over the range of 10-500 nM with a correlation coefficient of 0.9956. The limit of detection was 3.4 nM. The accuracy and applicability of the method were evaluated by the determination of Rh6G in natural waters and lipstick.

Abstract
Some synthetic dyes are fraudulently added into spices to appeal visually to consumers. Food regulations in several countries, including the United States, Australia, Japan and the European Union, strictly prohibit the use of unauthorised synthetic dyes in food. Nevertheless, illegal practices persist, where spices contaminated with potentially carcinogenic dyes have been documented, posing potential health risks to consumers. In the present study, 14 synthetic dyes were investigated through liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry in 252 commercially available spices in the Singapore market. In 18 out of these (7.1%) at least 1 illegal dye was detected at concentrations ranging from 0.010 to 114 mg/kg. Besides potential health risks, presence of these adulterants also reflects the economic motivations behind their fraudulent use. Findings in the present study further emphasise the need for increased public awareness, stricter enforcement, and continuous monitoring of illegal synthetic dyes in spices to ensure Singapore's food safety.

Abstract
The use of an optical probe for fluorescence detection combined with direct immersion single-drop microextraction has been demonstrated as an innovative approach. The optical probe served both as a drop holder for extractant and as a measuring device which made it possible to eliminate the use of cuvettes. A laser and a light emitting diode (LED) were tested as possible light sources. Both of them showed comparable results. However, given the much smaller half-band width of the laser radiation, its use has proven to be preferable since background correction can be eliminated. Direct immersion single-drop microextraction of an ionic association complex of rhodamine 6G with picric acid with subsequent fluorescent detection (λex was 532 nm and 525 nm for laser and LED, respectively; λem was 560 nm for both laser and LED) was used a model system to evaluate the new approach. The extractant phase was a 55 μL amyl acetate microdrop fixed in the optical part of the probe. LOD, LOQ and linear calibration range were found as 0.14, 0.48 and 0.5-10 nmol L-1, and 0.15, 0.50 and 0.5-5 nmol L-1 for laser and LED light sources, respectively. The accuracy of the method was assessed by analyzing real water samples.

Abstract
Developing a sensitive portable sensor for the determination of food additives is very important. Herein, a simple and sensitive electrochemical sensor has been constructed based on a carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets for the simultaneous determination of sunset yellow (SY) and rhodamine B (RhB) in phosphate buffer solution (pH = 4). The cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry (CV and DPV) results revealed two well-resolved anodic peaks for SY and RhB with a remarkable increase in oxidation signals of these colorants. Based on this, an electrochemical method was developed for the first time for the simultaneous detection of SY and RhB. Applicability of the sensor was confirmed in various concentrations of two analytes in two linear ranges of 1-20 μM for SY and 1-30 μM for RhB with a limit of detection (LOD) of 10.0 nM and 20.0 nM, respectively. Furthermore, the proposed sensor was successfully employed for the simultaneous detection of SY and RhB in food samples with recoveries of 93.1-106.0% indicating promising potential in practical application.

Abstract
An NH2 -MIL-53(Al)-DES(ChCl-Urea) nanocomposite was synthesized for extraction and determination of Rhodamine (Rh) 6G from environmental and cosmetic samples. The deep eutectic solvent (DES) was prepared by mixing choline chloride and urea in a mole ratio of 1:2. NH2 -MIL-53(Al)-DES(ChCl-Urea) nanocomposite was synthesized using the impregnation method at a ratio of 60:40 (w/w). The optimum conditions were determined after NH2 -MIL-53(Al)-DES(ChCl-Urea) characterization was performed. The optimum conditions were determined as pH 8, adsorbent amount of 15 mg, total adsorption-desorption time of 6 min, and enrichment factor of 20. The recovery values of the solid-phase extraction method for water and cosmetic samples under optimum conditions were between 95% and 106%. NH2 -MIL-53(Al)-DES(ChCl-Urea) nanocomposite was an economically advantageous adsorbent because of its reusability of 15 times. All analyses were performed using the ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer. The linear range, limit of detection, and limit of quantification of the method were 100-1000, 9.80, and 32.68 μg/L, respectively. The obtained results showed that the synthesized nanocomposite is a suitable adsorbent for the determination of Rh 6G in water and cosmetic samples. The real sample applications were verified with the high-performance liquid chromatography system.

Abstract
In the past decade, novel nano-engineering protocols have been actively synergized with fluorescence spectroscopic techniques to yield higher intensity from radiating dipoles, through the process termed plasmon-enhanced fluorescence (PEF). Consequently, the limit of detection of analytes of interest has been dramatically improvised on account of higher sensitivity rendered by augmented fluorescence signals. Recently, metallic thin films sustaining surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) have been creatively hybridized with such PEF platforms to realize a substantial upsurge in the global collection efficiency in a judicious technology termed surface plasmon-coupled emission (SPCE). While the process parameters and conditions to realize optimum coupling efficiency between the radiating dipoles and the plasmon polaritons in SPCE framework have been extensively discussed, the utility of disruptive nano-engineering over the SPCE platform and analogous interfaces such as 'ferroplasmon-on-mirror (FPoM)' as well as an alternative technology termed 'photonic crystal-coupled emission (PCCE)' have been seldom reviewed. In light of these observations, in this focus review, the myriad nano-engineering protocols developed over the SPCE, FPoM and PCCE platform are succinctly captured, presenting an emphasis on the recently developed cryosoret nano-assembly technology for photo-plasmonic hotspot generation (first to fourth). These technologies and associated sensing platforms are expected to ameliorate the current biosensing modalities with better understanding of the biophysicochemical processes and related outcomes at advanced micro-nano-interfaces. This review is hence envisaged to present a broad overview of the latest developments in SPCE substrate design and development for interdisciplinary applications that are of relevance in environmental as well as biological heath monitoring.

Abstract
Organic toxins are persistent chemicals of global concern capable of accumulating in environment and food. Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a promising technique that facilitates onsite detection of organic toxins. However, the fabrication of a SERS substrate is complicated and difficult to provide flexibility, fastness and cost-effectiveness. This study aims to develop a paper-based SERS method using grape skin-gold nanoparticles/graphene oxide (GE-AuNPs/GO) as SERS substrate and evaluate its efficiency with rhodamine 6G (Rh6G) as a model organic toxin and a real water and food contaminant. GE-AuNPs synthesized by green method using grape skin waste extract and GE-AuNPs/GO showed a surface plasmon resonance at 536 and 539 nm, particle size 18.6 and 19.5 nm, and zeta potential -44.6 and -59.7 mV, respectively. Paper-based SERS substrates were prepared by coating a hydrophobic thin-film of 30% polydimethylsiloxane solution in hexane on Whatman no. 1 filter paper, followed by drop-casting GE-AuNPs or GE-AuNPs/GO and drying. The SERS signals of Rh6G showed an enhancement factor of 5.8 × 104 for GE-AuNPs and 1.92 × 109 for GE-AuNPs/GO, implying that a combination of electromagnetic surface plasmon, charge transfer and molecular resonances may be responsible for a higher enhancement of signal by the latter. A low detection limit of 7.33 × 10-11 M in the linear range of 10-11-10-5 M was obtained for GE-AuNPs/GO, while the relative standard deviation of repeatability and reproducibility was 9.6 and 12.6%, respectively. Paper-based GE-AuNPs/GO SERS substrate was highly stable as <20% loss in efficiency was shown over a 60-day storage period. Application to real samples showed a high recovery of Rh6G from tap water (93.9-100.8%) as well as food samples such as red chilli powder (91.0-95.4%), red glutinous rice ball (96.6-98.3%) and tomato ketchup (98.9-102.3%) after QuEChERS extraction. Collectively, the developed paper-based GE-AuNPs/GO can be a potential substrate for sensitive onsite detection of rhodamine 6G by SERS method.

Abstract
The presence of organic pollutants in water and food samples is a risk for the environment. To avoid this hazard a variety of analytical tools are used for the detection of toxic organic contaminants. Herein we present a selective and sensitive electrochemical sensor based on amino group functionalized multi walled carbon nanotubes and carboxylic group functionalized multi walled carbon nanotubes (HOOC-fMWCNTs/NH2-fMWCNTs) as modifiers of the glassy carbon electrode for the detection of a toxic dye, Rhodamine B. The sensing ability of the designed sensor was examined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry. The synergistic effect of HOOC-fMWCNTs and NH2-fMWCNTs (layer by layer) led to enhanced electrocatalytic activity of the modified electrode surface for Rhodamine B detection. Under optimized conditions, the graph between concentration and peak current followed a linear trend in the concentration range of 0.1 nM to 0.05 μM. The limits of detection and quantification were found to be 57.4 pM and 191.3 pM respectively. The designed sensor was also used for probing the degradation of Rhodamine B. Sodium borohydride was found to degrade Rhodamine B in neutral media under ambient conditions. The kinetics of degradation followed first order kinetics. Rhodamine B degraded to the extent of more than 80% as revealed by electrochemical and spectrophotometric techniques. The developed method is promising for the treatment of dye contaminated wastewater. Moreover, it uses only a microliter volume of the sample for analysis.

Abstract
The use of dye in food is harmful to human health and is prohibited nowadays. However, it is still used because of the benefits, such as cheap prices and abundant resources. Rhodamine B is usually used as the colorant in food such as chili powder, chili oil, etc. It is colorless at very low concentration 10-7 M. The sensitive detection of RhB at ultra-low concentration help to prevent some risk for human. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a great technique to detect the analytes at ultra-low concentration and provide the molecule's information as a fingerprint. In this study, silver nano-cube was facilely synthesized by reducing Ag+ in ethylene glycol and upgraded to thin-film as a SERS active substrate. RhB was detected at 10-10 M by a silver nano-cube sensor. The dynamic linear regression between the Raman intensity and RhB concentration over seven orders of magnitude (from 10-4 to 10-10 M) was excellent with high reliability (R2 = 0.99). Moreover, the substrate can be used after storing in a dark area for 60 days. This proposed nano-cube silver could serve as a potential substrate for detecting RhB in food at very low concentration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A new and simple effervescent CO2-table-induced switchable hydrophilicity solvent extraction method (CI-SHS) was used for the preconcentration of rhodamine B (RB). OBJECTIVE The main theme of the proposed method to disperse green solvent by in situ CO2-table system overcome on the contamination and to avoid the dispersion by using different chemicals. METHODS Switchable hydrophilicity solvent (N, N-Dimethyl cyclohexylamine) was dispersed in an aqueous solution by reaction of CO2-table of sodium carbonate and citric acid to enhance the contact area between two medium, which radically improved the extraction capacity of the RB from aqueous medium to switchable solvent. The phase separation was achieved by simple heating not by centrifugation that makes a change on hydrophilicity to hydrophobicity. The supernatant-enriched RB- N, N-Dimethyl cyclohexylamine phase was withdrawn and injected into the UV glass cells. The absorbance was measured at 542. RESULTS Limit of detection and enhancement factor were achieved to be 0.042 and 50 µg/L. Validity and accuracy of the method verified by analysis of real samples by the spiking addition method. The relative standard deviation was obtained at 3.2%. The method was applied to food and soft drink samples. CONCLUSIONS This method offers high sensitivity, selectivity, accuracy, and precision for the separation, preconcentration, and spectrophotometric determination of RB. Simple, fast, low-cost, and green extraction method was developed. HIGHLIGHTS High enrichment factor and lower detection limits were observed in this microextraction method. Present method is sensitive, selective, very accurate, and precise.

Abstract
A special self-designed device based on poly-1-vinyl-3-pentylimidazole hexafluorophosphate (PILs-C5) solid-phase extraction and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is proposed as a novel method for the on-line separation and analysis of Rhodamine B (RhB) dye. Single factor experiment design and orthogonal experiment design were used to optimize the experimental parameters, such as pH, the amount of PILs-C5, sample volume, flow rate, eluent type, eluent concentration, eluent volume, and the flow rate of eluent. Under the optimized conditions, the linear range was 0.02-2.4 μg mL-1, with the correlation coefficients (R 2) of 0.997. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were 0.004 μg mL-1 and 0.02 μg mL-1, respectively. The extraction capacity was 6.22 mg g-1, and enrichment ratio was 15. The extraction mechanism and the post-treatment method of PILs-C5 were also studied. This method was applied to analyze RhB in a wide variety of real samples with satisfactory results.

Abstract
A well designed, new pyrene based small molecule (L) was synthesized from 1:1 condensation reaction of 1-aminopyrene and 6-(1,3-benzodioxal-5-yl)-2-pyridine carboxaldehyde which was characterized by absorption, emission spectrometry, FTIR, NMR and mass studies. Interestingly the UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopic studies revealed that the ligand (L) works as a dual turn-on luminescent chemosensor for chromium(III) (Cr3+) and aluminium(III) (Al3+) in aqueous environment which were further supported by DFT and TDDFT studies. L shows a significant colour change from pale yellow to reddish yellow with a detection limit of ~10-9 M in the presence of Cr3+ and Al3+ whereas there were no noteworthy changes in the presence of other monovalent and divalent metal ions. The molecular signaling in the presence of Cr3+, Al3+, Fe3+ and EDTA was compared with advanced level combinational INHIBIT gate based on 4 input logic gates. Herein, first derivative constant wavelength synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy (1st DCWSFS) was applied for the determination of Cr3+, Al3+ ion concentrations in a mixture via increment of spectral resolution of the respective overlapping peaks. 1st DCWSFS is reported to be used in pharmaceuticals but very few works have been done for determination of metal ion concentration in environmental sample without prior separation. The individual Cr3+and Al3+ ion concentrations in a mixture were determined through liquid-liquid extraction process and the efficiencies were compared with 1st derivative SFS method. It was observed that 1st derivative SFS process is more efficient than conventional liquid-liquid extraction process. Therefore, 1st DCWSFS method using sensor L might be useful as a diagnostic tool for detection of individual metal ion concentrations (Cr3+ and Al3+) from a mixture which will be cost-effective, time saving and more precise.

Abstract
A high sampling rate, good stability, high throughput masking fluorescence detection system with easy positioning of each channel for capillary array electrophoresis was prepared and studied. A special mask combined with convex lenses was designed to modulate signals, without using any extra device to position each channel. The signal of each channel was detected by a photomultiplier tube, classified and saved by software. The design was used to evidently reduce the rotational vibration of optical components and to stabilize the system, so a high sampling rate was obtained by increasing the DC motor speed. To improve the optical system, optical fibers instead of conventional bulky optical components were used to transmit optical signal and to collect fluorescences in multiple directions, which greatly raised the sensitivity. Other important parameters including sampling rate, rotating speed and driven voltage laser diode (LDs) have also been investigated. Under optimal conditions, the performance of the detection system was evaluated. This novel system had a well-designed structure, and allowed independent multiple capillary operations and easy microanalysis. Its limit of detection for rhodamine 6G was 2.0 × 10-2 µg/mL.

Abstract
In this work, a novel mode of hollow fiber liquid-phase microextraction (HF-LPME) technique namely rotating extraction cell solvent bar microextraction (REC-SBME) was introduced. The proposed method was applied for the preconcentration of methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine 6G (RG) in some real samples, including soft drink, lipstick, environmental water, and wastewater samples. In the extraction setup, two pieces of hollow fibers were fixed on a mechanical support and immersed in a rotating extraction cell containing the sample solution during the extraction process. The rotation of the extraction cell by using an electric motor led to an enhancement in the mass transfer of the dyes from the sample solution into the organic acceptor phase. In the developed procedure, the UV-Vis spectrophotometry and HPLC-UV/Vis were employed as detection methods for the analysis of the acceptor phase and the obtained results were compared. Optimization of the extraction factors affecting the method, including organic solvent type, sample solution pH, extraction time, rotational rate, the volume of sample and acceptor solutions, salt addition, and temperature was performed in order to obtain the best preconcentration factor. Linear dynamic range obtained by HPLC-UV/Vis and spectrophotometry was observed in the ranges of 2.5-1200 ng mL-1 for RG and 1.6-600 ng mL-1 for MB with R2 more than 0.9971. Also, relative standard deviation (RSD) values (n = 3) less than 3.8% were obtained. The good conformity of the obtained results makes UV-Vis spectrophotometric method an ideal tool for routine analysis of trace dyes in the complex matrices after REC-SBME.

Abstract
For traditional photocatalysts, the adsorption and successive surface reaction constitute a coupled and integrated process, owing to the limited number of catalytic active centres available. An attempt to boost the photocatalytic performance to optimize the adsorption and surface reaction process may be performed by exploring various photocatalyst infrastructures. Herein, we use a facile solvothermal method to synthesize a series of layered alkylammonium thiostannate hybrids, namely (baH)2Sn3S7, (haH)2Sn3S7 and (oaH)2Sn3S7 (ba = butylamine, ha = hexylamine, oa = octylamine). The hybrids showed broad UV-visible light absorption with appropriate band gaps. The inorganic/organic amphiphilic infrastructure of these hybrids enables them to exhibit prominent ion-exchange properties for Rhodamine B, with a large capacity over a wide pH range (1–11). And the adsorbed Rhodamine B is photodegraded within 30 minutes. A mechanistic study indicates that the adsorption and photodegradation steps are performed at the organic and inorganic layers within these hybrids, respectively, which are decoupled and independent. We conclude that the high-performance integrated adsorption–photodegradation ability is a consequence of the lipophilicity of intercalated alkylammonium and the photocatalysis performance of the 2D [Sn3S7]n2n− monolayers. For traditional photocatalysts, the adsorption and successive surface reaction constitute a coupled and integrated process, owing to the limited number of catalytic active centres available.![]()

Abstract
In this study, a smart and green analytical method based on the second-order calibration algorithm coupled with excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence was developed for the determination of rhodamine dyes illegally added into chilli samples. The proposed method not only has the advantage of high sensitivity over the traditional fluorescence method but also fully displays the "second-order advantage". Pure signals of analytes were successfully extracted from severely interferential EEMs profiles via using alternating trilinear decomposition (ATLD) algorithm even in the presence of common fluorescence problems such as scattering, peak overlaps and unknown interferences. It is worth noting that the unknown interferents can denote different kinds of backgrounds, not only refer to a constant background. In addition, the method using interpolation method could avoid the information loss of analytes of interest. The use of "mathematical separation" instead of complicated "chemical or physical separation" strategy can be more effective and environmentally friendly. A series of statistical parameters including figures of merit and RSDs of intra- (≤1.9%) and inter-day (≤6.6%) were calculated to validate the accuracy of the proposed method. Furthermore, the authoritative method of HPLC-FLD was adopted to verify the qualitative and quantitative results of the proposed method. Compared with the two methods, it also showed that the ATLD-EEMs method has the advantages of accuracy, rapidness, simplicity and green, which is expected to be developed as an attractive alternative method for simultaneous and interference-free determination of rhodamine dyes illegally added into complex matrices.

Abstract
Present study is based on describing an ultrasound-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction coupled with derivative spectrophotometry (UAS-DLLME-UV-vis) as useful technique for selective determination of crystal violet (CV) and azure b (Az-B). The significant factors like pH, extractor volume, disperser value and extraction time contribution and their numerical coefficient in quadratic model were calculated according to central composite design (CCD). According to desirability function (DF) as good criterion the best experimental conditions was adjusted and selected at pH of 7.0, 170μL of chloroform, 800μL of ethanol that strongly mixed with the aqueous phase via 4min sonication. Additionally, under study system was modeled by trained artificial neural networks (ANNs) as fitness function with acceptable error of MSE 2.97×10-06 and 1.15×10-05 with R2: 0.9999 and 0.9997 for CV and Az-B, respectively. The optimum conditions by using genetic algorithm (GA) method was pH of 6.3, 160μL of chloroform, 740μL of ethanol and 4.5min sonication. Under above specified and optimize conditions, the predicted extraction percentage were 99.80 and 102.20% for CV and Az-B, respectively. The present UAS-DLLME-UV-vis procedure has minimum interference from other substances assign to the matrix, which candidate this method as good alternative to quantify under study dyes content with recoveries in the range of 86-100% for dyes. The detection limits were 2.043ngmL-1 and 1.72ngmL-1, and limits of quantitation were 6.81ngmL-1 and 5.727ngmL-1 for CV and Az-B, respectively. The proposed methodology was successfully applied for quantification of under study analytes at different media.

Abstract
A novel fluorescence detection system for CE was described and evaluated. Two miniature laser pointers were used as the excitation source. A Y-style optical fiber was used to transmit the excitation light and a four-branch optical fiber was used to collect the fluorescence. The optical fiber and optical filter were imported into a photomultiplier tube without any extra fixing device. A simplified PDMS detection cell was designed with guide channels through which the optical fibers were easily aligned to the detection window of separation capillary. According to different requirements, laser pointers and different filters were selected by simple switching and replacement. The fluorescence from four different directions was collected at the same detecting point. Thus, the sensitivity was enhanced without peak broadening. The fluorescence detection system was simple, compact, low-cost, and highly sensitive, with its functionality demonstrated by the separation and determination of red dyes and fluorescent whitening agents. The detection limit of rhodamine 6G was 7.7 nM (S/N = 3). The system was further applied to determine illegal food dyes. The CE system is potentially eligible for food safety analysis.
