The new role of dipyrromethene chemosensor for absorbance-ratiometic and fluorescence "turn-on" sensing Zn 2+ ions in water-organic solutions and real water samples. SPECTROCHIMICA ACTA. PART A, MOLECULAR AND BIOMOLECULAR SPECTROSCOPY 2024; 307:123663. Abstract
This study presents a dipyrromethene-based sensitive and selective probe for Zn2+ ions detection in aqueous and water-organic media. The probe demonstrates absorbance-ratiometric and "off-on" fluorescent sensing for Zn2+ in a DMSO/H2O (9:1, v/v) mixture. The 3,3',4,4',5,5'-hexamethyl-2,2'-dipyrromethene (HL), similar to its analogs, exhibits weak fluorescence (with a quantum yield of less than 0.001). However, upon the presence of Zn2+ ions in the sensor HL solution, there is a remarkable increase (up to 200-fold) in fluorescence intensity due to the formation of a stable intramolecular chelate complex [ZnL2]. This complex formation induces a significant hyperchromic effect and a red shift (57 nm) in the characteristic absorption bands. The sensing mechanism of the probe towards Zn2+ ions was thoroughly investigated through absorbance and fluorescent titrations, molar ratio plots, 1H NMR, and DFT/TDDFT studies. The fluorescence response exhibited a strong linear relationship with Zn2+ concentration within the range of 0 to 5.7 × 10-6 mol/L. The detection limit (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LoQ) for Zn2+ were determined as 2 × 10-8 mol/L and 6.6 × 10-8 mol/L, respectively. Moreover, the probe demonstrated high selectivity for Zn2+ ions over other metal ions (Na+, Mg2+, Al3+, Cr3+, Mn2+, Fe3+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Pd2+, Cd2+, Hg2+, Pb2+). Test systems in the form of test-strips and cotton-pads were developed based on the dipyrromethene sensor for rapid "naked-eye" detection of zinc ions in water. The sensor was successfully applied for detecting Zn2+ ions in real water samples.

Abstract
Based on the typical Suzuki coupling reaction and Schiff base reaction, a novel fluorescent molecular PCBW is synthesized and applied as a fluorescence and colorimetric sensor to detect Cu2+ in aqueous solution. The PCBW sensor presents the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect and at 1 × 10-5 mol L-1 it emits the strongest turquoise fluorescence in the DMSO-H2O system (fw = 40%). The sensor exhibits a 'turn-off' fluorescent characteristic by adding Cu2+, and its fluorescent intensity shows a reliable linear relationship with the Cu2+ concentration in the range of 0-6 × 10-6 mol L-1, with a detection limit of 1.19 × 10-8 mol L-1. Meanwhile, the PCBW sensor also exhibits the colorimetric sensing from colorless to light yellow. The sensor has good selectivity and anti-interference and its pH application range can be extended from 5 to 10. The intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) is speculated as the main fluorescence mechanism of PCBW. In addition, the sensor presents good reusability and is practicable to detect Cu2+ in diverse aqueous samples.

Abstract
Zinc is the second most abundant trace element in the human central nervous system, which is closely related to various physiological activities in the human body. Fluoride ion is one of the most harmful elements in drinking water. Excessive intake of F- may cause dental fluorosis, renal failure, or DNA damage. Therefore, it is urgent to develop sensors with high sensitivity and selectivity for the detection of Zn2+ and F- ions at the same time. In this work, a series of mixed lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) probes are synthesized using a simple method of in situ doping. The luminous color can be finely modulated by changing the molar ratio of Tb3+ and Eu3+ during synthesis. Benefiting from the unique energy transfer modulation mechanism, the probe has the continuous detection capability of zinc ions and fluoride ions. The detection of Zn2+ and F- in a real environment shows that the probe has a good practical application prospect. The as-designed sensor at 262 nm excitation can sequentially detect Zn2+ concentrations ranging from 10-8 to 10-3 M (LOD = 4.2 nM) and F- levels ranging from 10-5 to 10-3 M (LOD = 3.6 μM) with high selectivity. Based on different output signals, a simple Boolean logic gate device is constructed to realize intelligent visualization of Zn2+ and F- monitoring.

Abstract
A novel fluorescence chemical sensor-based probe 1-{[(E)-(2-aminophenyl)azanylidene]methyl}naphthalen-2-ol (AMN) was designed and synthesized, which performed a "naked eye" detection ability toward Cu2+ and Co2+ based on aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorescence strategy. It has sensitive detection ability for Cu2+ and Co2+. In addition, the color changed from yellow-green to orange under the sunlight, realizing the rapid identification of Cu2+/Co2+, which has the potential of on-site visual detection under the "naked eye". Moreover, different "on" and "off" fluorescence expressions were exhibited under excessive glutathione (GSH) in AMN-Cu2+ and AMN-Co2+ systems, which could be employed to distinguish Cu2+ from Co2+. The detection limits for Cu2+ and Co2+ were measured to be 8.29 × 10-8 M and 9.13 × 10-8 M, respectively. The binding mode of AMN was calculated to be 2:1 by Jobs' plot method analysis. Ultimately, the new fluorescence sensor was applied to detect Cu2+ and Co2+ in real samples (tap water, river water, and yellow croaker), and the results were satisfying. Therefore, this high-efficiency bifunctional chemical sensor platform based on "on-off" fluorescence detection will provide significant guidance for the advance development of single-molecule sensors for multi-ion detection.

Abstract
The compound (1E,2E)-1,2-bis((1H-pyrrol-2-yl)methylene)hydrazine (1) was investigated for its chemosensor application. The colorimetric response of 1 with various ions was investigated, and the selective optical change upon mixing with Cu2+ was found. The Cu2+ binding stoichiometry of 1 derived from Job's plot and the in silico study give us the tentative structural detail of the binding mode of 1 and Cu2+ being 1:1. The binding constant between 1 and Cu2+ from the Benesi-Hildebrand plot was 1.49 × 104 M-1. The limit of detection of 1 in Cu2+ detection was 0.64 μM (0.040 ppm), which is much lower than the WHO and US EPA maximum allowable Cu2+ level in drinking water (2 and 1.3 ppm, respectively). The custom-built colorimeter demonstrates a good linear relationship between Cu2+ concentration and electrical resistance (Ω) upon 1-Cu2+ ion binding.

Abstract
The detection of intracellular pH is crucial for elucidating the pathological process of cancers, as well as for medical diagnostic applications. Here, we developed an aggregation-induced emission active pH-responsive fluorescent probe (TPE-DCP) for sensitively detecting cell pH changes. The probe shows obvious pH-sensing properties at ~615 nm, with a pKa value of 6.82 and a good linear pH response ranging from 8.5 to 4.5. TPE-DCP holds advantages such as excellent anti-interference performance, good photostability, and low cytotoxicity, and has been successfully used to image intracellular pH changes in cells.

Abstract
Although numerous fluorescence sensors for Cu2+ have been presented, a long-wavelength sensor in aqueous media has rarely been reported as expected due to practical application requirements. In this work, a novel AIE molecule (DHBB) containing two biphenylacrylonitrile units bridged by dibenzylidenehydrazine was prepared. It possessed the merits of long-wavelength emission, good emission in aqueous media, and multiple functional groups for binding Cu2+. It exhibited good sensing selectivity for Cu2+ among all kinds of tested metal ions. The detection limit was as low as 1.08 × 10-7 M. The sensing mechanism was clarified as 1:1 stoichiometric ratio based on the binding cooperation of O and N functional groups of DHBB. The selective sensing ability for Cu2+ remained stable at pH = 5-9 and was influenced little by other metal ions. The Cu2+ sensing ability of DHBB was applied in real samples with 96% recovery rate. The bio-imaging experiment of living cells suggested that DHBB possessed not only good bio-imaging performance but also sensing ability for Cu2+ in living environments. This work suggested the good application prospect of DHBB to sense Cu2+ in real samples and living environment.

Abstract
A series of N-alkyl-substituted polybenzimidazoles (SPBIs), synthesized by simple condensation and N-alkylation, act as functional materials with tunable microstructures and sensing performance. For their controllable morphologies, the formation of nano-/microspheres is observed at the n(RBr)/n(PBI) feed ratio of 5:1. Products with different degrees of alkylation can recognize metal ions and nitroaromatic compounds (NACs). For example, SPBI-c, obtained at the feed ratio of 1:1, can selectively detect Cu2+, Fe3+, and NACs. By contrast, SPBI-a, obtained at the feed ratio of 0.1:1, can exclusively detect Cu2+ with high sensitivity. Their sensing mechanisms have been studied by FT-IR spectroscopy, SEM, XPS, and DFT calculations. Interestingly, the SPBIs can adsorb Cu2+ in solution and show good recyclability. These results demonstrate that polymeric materials with both sensing and adsorption applications can be realized by regulating the alkylation extent of the main chain, thus providing a new approach for the facile synthesis of multifunctional materials.

Abstract
Although some reports on sensing ClO- had been presented, the ClO- sensor with high selectivity and sensitivity in aqueous media was still expected. Herein, an effective fluorescent sensor for ClO- in aqueous media was designed and synthesized by simple procedure based on cyanostilbene derivative (TCS). TCS exhibited strong fluorescence in aqueous media, which could be selectively quenched by ClO- among various species. The detection limit was as low as 3.2 × 10-8 M. The sensing mechanism of the oxidation of sulfur in thiophene unit was confirmed by the FT-IR spectrum, fluorescence Job's plot, 1H NMR spectrum and MS spectrum. This sensor was successfully applied on detecting ClO- in real sample and living-cell imaging, suggesting its potential application for sensing ClO- in both vitro assay and vivo environment.

Abstract
Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) compounds display a photophysical phenomenon in which the aggregate state exhibits stronger emission than the isolated units. The common term of "AIEgens" was coined to describe compounds undergoing the AIE effect. Due to the recent interest in AIEgens, the search for novel hybrid organic-inorganic compounds with unique luminescence properties in the aggregate phase is a relevant goal. In this perspective, the abundant, inexpensive, and nontoxic d10 zinc cation offers unique opportunities for building AIE active fluorophores, sensing probes, and bioimaging tools. Considering the novelty of the topic, relevant examples collected in the last 5 years (2016-2021) through scientific production can be considered fully representative of the state-of-the-art. Starting from the simple phenomenological approach and considering different typological and chemical units and structures, we focused on zinc-based AIEgens offering synthetic novelty, research completeness, and relevant applications. A special section was devoted to Zn(II)-based AIEgens for living cell imaging as the novel technological frontier in biology and medicine.

Abstract
Previously reported fluorescent sensors for Th4+ experienced emission quenching or generated false positive signal upon aggregate formation in aqueous media. Herein, a simple and novel thorium sensor (CDB-BA) based on cyanodistyrene structure was designed and synthesized, which integrated the highly emitting characteristic of AIE effect and off-on response of PET modulation for the first time to construct the "turn-on" fluorescent probe for Th4+. Besides excellent selectivity, CDB-BA exhibited remarkable fluorescent enhancement which was linearly related to the concentration of Th4+ in the range of 0.25-8 μM. The detection limit was attained 0.074 μM, which was lower than that of most previously reported sensors. The mechanism of tris-chelate complex of CDB-BA with Th4+ was confirmed by mass spectra, IR spectra and DFT calculation. The excellent Th4+ sensing ability of CDB-BA was successfully applied to detecting Th4+ on TLC plates, in real water samples and living-cell imaging. This work suggested that the combination of AIE and PET photophysical mechanism could offer the merits of minimized background and enhanced signal fidelity to develop novel "turn-on" fluorescent probe in complicated aqueous environment and biological research.

Abstract
A turn-on fluorescent nanoprobe (named AAP-1), based on an aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen), is disclosed for the detection of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is an essential element in the biological system. Organic fluorophore (named TPE-TA) consists of tetraphenylethylene (TPE, sensing and signaling moiety) and mono-triamine (TA, sensing moiety), and it forms an aggregated form in aqueous media as a nanoprobe AAP-1. The nanoprobe AAP-1 has multiple electrostatic interactions as well as hydrophobic interactions with ATP, and it displays superior selectivity toward ATP, reliable sensitivity, with a detection limit around 0.275 ppb, and fast responsive (signal within 10 s). Such a fluorescent probe to monitor ATP has been actively pursued throughout fundamental and translational research areas. In vitro assay and a successful cellular ATP imaging application was demonstrated in cancer cells and embryonic stem cells. We expect that our work warrants further ATP-related studies throughout a variety of fields.

Abstract
The selective detection of salicylaldehyde skeleton is of great significance in phytochemistry and biological research but rarely reported. In this research, a simple and highly selective "turn-on" fluorescence sensor (CDB-Am) for salicylaldehyde skeleton was developed based on switch of photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and aggregation-induced emission (AIE). CDB-Am bearing amino-cyanodistyrene structure responded to salicylaldehyde in the range of 3.1 to 40 μM with a detection limit of 0.94 μM. The sensing process of formation of Schiff-base adduct CDB-SA was confirmed by 1H NMR, MS, and FT-IR spectra, revealing that a recovered AIE property accounted for the turn-on fluorescence response of CDB-Am and the intramolecular hydrogen bonding played a crucial role in the disruption of PET process. This sensing ability was successfully applied for both fluorescence qualitative test of salicylaldehyde skeleton on TLC analysis and quantitative detection of salicylaldehyde skeleton with good accuracy in the root bark of Periploca sepium, suggesting the extensive applications in phytochemistry and traditional Chinese herbal medicine. Furthermore, CDB-Am exhibited the first excellent fluorescence imaging ability in detecting salicylaldehyde skeleton in a living system. This work supplied a new strategy of preparing a novel "turn-on" fluorescence probe for detecting salicylaldehyde skeleton in complex environments and living bodies.

Abstract
A ditopic Schiff base ligand, H2L has been synthesized and characterized by all spectroscopic techniques. It is highly selective and specific towards Al3+ in semi aqueous medium (DMF/H2O mixture) by exhibiting a drastic increase in the fluorescence intensity. The emission studies, spectroscopic data, life time and quantum yield results have been used to understand its binding mode, explore its specificity and establish its efficacy. The intensity difference is remarkable in physiological pH range. Due to its reversible behavior this ditopic fluorescent chemosensor can be used multiple times to make it cost effective. Detection limit for this chemosensor was found to be 0.65 μM. Experiments with TLC plates show that it can be used as a practical and portable sensor for studying environmental samples in real life. The L-Al3+ complex generated in the solution acts as a sensor to sequentially detect pyrophosphate groups present in inorganic pyrophosphates, ATP and ADP among other anions by turning off the fluorescence. Inhibit logic gate and its corresponding truth table has been developed to aid in further exploiting its multidimensional applications.

Abstract
A specific Cu2+ sensor, 2-amino-3-(BODIPYmethyleneamino)maleonitrile (BDM), was established by a simple dehydration between BODIPY and diaminomaleonitrile. Cu2+ could be recognized by BDM over other competing metal ions in acetonitrile with distinct fluorescence emission signal response. Upon the addition of Cu2+ to BDM in acetonitrile, the maximum absorption at approximately 530 nm on the longer wavelength side was quenched, and the emission at 530 nm was ignited simultaneously. The fluorescence intensity enhancement could reach a maximum of 204 times the intensity of the BDM blank solution. The fluorescence "off-on" effect is established according to the Cu2+-induced fast intramolecular oxidative cyclization reaction, which could be deduced from the formation of an imidazole ring appended to the cyclization product (2-BODIPY-1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarbonitrile, BMC). Single-crystal structure analysis of the sensor BDM and cyclization product BMC further demonstrated this oxidative cyclization. Finally, the Cu2+ recognition property of BDM was validated in SiHa cells and living zebrafish. Additionally, the blood-brain barrier of the zebrafish can be penetrated by the BDM dye and the neuron cells in the brain were stained.

Abstract
In this study, we designed and synthesized a simple probe 2-(8-((8-methoxyquinolin-2-yl)methoxy)quinolin-2-yl)benzo[d]thiazole (DQT) for detection of Ag+ and Cd2+ in a CH3OH/HEPES (9 : 1 v/v, pH = 7.30) buffer system. Its structure was characterized by NMR, ESI-HR-MS and DFT calculations, and its fluorescence performance was also investigated. Probe DQT showed fluorescence quenching in response to Ag+ and Cd2+ with low detection limits of 0.42 μM and 0.26 μM, respectively. Importantly, the complexation of the probe with Cd2+ resulted in a red shift from blue to green, making it possible to detect Ag+ and Cd2+ by the naked eye under an ultraviolet lamp. The DQT-Cd2+ complex could be used for sequential recognition of S2-. The recovery response could be repeated 3 times by alternate addition of Cd2+ and S2-. A filter paper strip test further demonstrated the potential of probe DQT as a convenient and rapid assay.
