Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Cognitive impairment is a core feature of schizophrenia, and it is now clear that there is a link between nutritional indicators and cognitive functioning. This study aimed to investigate correlations between three nutritional indicators (prognostic nutritional index [PNI], geriatric nutritional risk index [GNRI], and controlling nutritional status score [CONUT]) and cognitive function in hospitalized patients with stable schizophrenia. METHODS A total of 235 patients who were hospitalized with stable schizophrenia were included. Patient demographic information was collected through self-reports or electronic medical records, and cognitive function was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment in China (MoCA-C). Information on serum albumin and total cholesterol levels, lymphocyte counts, and body mass index during the stable stage of schizophrenia was collected to calculate the PNI, GNRI, and CONUT scores, according to their respective calculation criteria. Covariate-adjusted linear regression model and ordered logistic regression model were constructed to determine the relationship between nutritional indicators and cognitive function. RESULTS Overall, 90.2% of the patients were under the age of 60 years, and males comprised 60% of all patients. The median scores for MoCA-C, PNI, GNRI, and CONUT in hospitalized patients with stable schizophrenia were 18 (12,23), 52.85 (50.25,55.90), 110.85 (105.80,116.21), and 3 (3,3), respectively. The results of the correlation analysis showed that only PNI was associated with MoCA-C scores (r = 0.15, P = 0.021). This relationship was further confirmed by covariate-adjusted linear regression modeling (β = 0.147, 95%CI:0.049-0.351, p = 0.01) and ordered logistic regression modeling (OR = 0.054, 95%CI:0.001-0.106, p = 0.046). CONCLUSIONS The findings revealed a significant correlation between PNI scores and MoCA-C scores in hospitalized patients with stable schizophrenia.

Abstract
This review explores the understudied topic of nutritional inequality among individuals with schizophrenia, highlighting the complex interplay between diet, genetics, and mental health. Unhealthy dietary patterns, socioeconomic factors, and disordered eating behaviors contribute to malnutrition, increasing the risk of physical health issues and premature mortality. Socioeconomic factors exacerbate nutritional disparities, necessitating targeted interventions. Genetic influences on nutrient metabolism remain under-researched, although nutritional genomics shows potential for personalized interventions. Current research reveals methodological gaps, urging larger sample sizes and standardized approaches. The integration of nutrigenomics, encompassing various omics disciplines, emerges as a transformative tool. The holistic life-cycle approach to schizophrenia management underscores the vital role of nutrition, calling for personalized interventions to enhance mental health outcomes.

Abstract
Malnutrition (MN) is a highly prevalent condition in the elderly. It is associated with functional impairment, disability, frailty, and sarcopenia. The aim was to analyze the capacity of GLIM and ESPEN criteria to diagnose MN in a sample of institutionalized psychogeriatric patients. Clinical and anthropometric data were collected in a cross-sectional study. Patients' frailty, dependence, functional capacity, MNA, hand-grip strength (HS), and sarcopenia were evaluated. Body composition (BC) was estimated by conventional bioimpedance analysis. MN diagnosis was established using the ESPEN and the GLIM criteria based on fat-free mass index (GLIM-FFMI), appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (GLIM-ASMMI), skeletal muscle mass index (GLIM-SMMI), and HS (mGLIM). Ninety-two patients (57.6% men; mean age: 79.4 years) were studied. Depending on the diagnosis criteria, MN prevalence was between 25% (ESPEN) and 41.3% (GLIM-SMMI). Agreement between ESPEN and all GLIM criteria was poor, but it was excellent between all GLIM criteria (kappa > 0.8). Phenotypic criteria carried more weight in the diagnosis of MN than etiological ones. Depending on the parameter used, the prevalence of reduced muscle mass was notably different. Differences in BMI, BC, inflammation, and albumin are detected by the GLIM-FFMI criteria in the MN and non-MN subjects. Also, this criterion is the only one that identified differences in phase angle (PhA) between these groups. In the elderly, PhA can be very useful to monitor nutritional status.

Abstract
Severe psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia are inevitably linked to unemployment, meagre per capita income, and residence in disadvantaged, poorly resourced neighbourhoods. This means difficult access to healthy food and is particularly problematic for pregnant women and mothers with children to feed. The necessity of taking antipsychotic drugs is an additional barrier to healthy eating because these drugs are associated with serious cognitive, psychological, behavioural, and metabolic sequelae. Being ill with psychosis makes it extremely difficult to maintain a healthy diet; nutritional deficiencies result, as do medical complications. The results of present literature review confirm the gravity of the problem and suggest a number of potentially useful clinical interventions.

Abstract
Background Inflammation is relevant to the pathophysiology of severe neuropsychiatric disorders, schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorders (BD). Multiple pathophysiological biomarkers are valuable for the study of inflammatory processes. This study investigated albumin-related biomarkers in SCZ and BD to explore their roles in disease. Methods A total of 5,577 SCZ, 3442 BD-manic (BD-M) and 1405 BD-depression (BD-D) in acute stage and 5000 health controls (HCs) were enrolled. The differences in these biomarker levels among different groups were compared, and the contributing factors for the occurrence of SCZ, BD, and subgroups of BD were analyzed. Results Both SCZ and BD exhibit lower prognostic nutritional index (PNI), but higher neutrophil percentage-to-albumin ratio (NPAR) and creatinine-albumin ratio (CRA) compared with HC. Compared with BD-D, BD-M had higher NPAR and platelet-to-albumin ratio (PAR) and lower CRA. In logistic regression, lower prognostic nutritional index (PNI) and higher CRA were associated with both SCZ and BD, while higher NPAR was associated with BD. In the subgroup of BD, higher NPAR, CRA and lower PNI were associated with BD-M; lower PAR, PNI and higher CRA were associated with BD-D. Conclusion Our study reaffirmed the role of inflammation in the pathophysiology of SCZ and BD. Diagnostic value has been demonstrated in NPAR, PAR, PNI and CRA for BD and SCZ.

Abstract
Amino acid abnormalities have been suggested to be a key pathophysiological mechanism in schizophrenia (SZ). Recently, gut microbes were found to be critically involved in mental and metabolic diseases. However, the relationship between serum amino acid levels and gut microbes in SZ is rarely studied. Here, we analyzed serum amino acid levels in 76 untreated SZ patients and 79 healthy controls (HC). Serum levels of 10 amino acids were significantly altered in patients with SZ. We further classified the cut-off values for serum arginine, leucine, glutamine, and methionine levels to distinguish SZ patients from controls. These classifiers were shown to be effective in another validation cohort (49 SZ and 48 HC). The correlation between serum amino acids and clinical symptoms and cognitive functions was also analyzed. Arginine, leucine, glutamine, and methionine levels were significantly correlated with clinical symptoms and cognitive impairments in SZ patients. By metagenome shotgun sequencing of fecal samples, we found that patients with SZ with a low level of serum amino acids have higher richness and evenness of the gut microbiota. At the genus level, the abundances of Mitsuokella and Oscillibacter are significantly abnormal. At the mOTU level, 15 mOTUs in the low-level SZ group were significantly different from the HC group. In addition, Mitsuokella multacida was correlated with glutamine and methionine, respectively. Our research revealed that alterations in serum amino acid levels are critically related to changes in gut microbiota composition in SZ patients. These findings may shed light on new strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of SZ.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Metabolic abnormalities such as diabetes, dyslipidemia, abdominal obesity, metabolic syndrome, and abnormal levels of plasma adipokines have been observed in patients with schizophrenia. This study aimed to investigate the differences and correlations of plasma vaspin levels with metabolic parameters in patients with schizophrenia and to compare with healthy controls. METHOD We measured plasma levels of vaspin and metabolic parameters of 100 patients with schizophrenia and 95 healthy controls. Patients with schizophrenia were evaluated with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and The Global Assessment of Functioning. RESULTS Mean levels of body mass index, waist circumference, triglyceride, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol of the patients were statistically higher than those of the healthy controls (p = 0.002, p < 0.001, p = 0.03, and p = 0.002, respectively). Plasma levels of vaspin were 0.96 ± 0.73 ng/ml in patients with schizophrenia and 0.29 ± 0.15 ng/ml in the healthy controls (p < 0.001). Plasma vaspin levels were statistically higher in patients with schizophrenia than healthy controls both in groups with and without metabolic syndrome and obesity (p < 0.001). Plasma vaspin levels showed a positive correlation with triglyceride in patients with schizophrenia (r = 0.26, p = 0.007). There were positive correlations between vaspin and PANSS scores in schizophrenia patients with obesity (PANSS Positive: r = 0.42, p = 0.01; PANSS Negative: r = 0.42, p = 0.01; PANSS General: r = 0.43, p = 0.01; PANSS Total: r = 0.47, p = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS Our study showed a significant relationship and positive correlation between vaspin and PANSS scores in schizophrenia patients with obesity. Vaspin may play an important role in the metabolic processes of patients with schizophrenia.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aims to identify demographic, clinical, and nutritional factors related to malnutrition in community-dwelling patients with schizophrenia. DESIGN AND METHODS We used a descriptive cross-sectional design. Between June and July 2016, 188 community-dwelling patients with schizophrenia were included in this study. FINDINGS Of the 188 participants, 4.3% were classified as malnourished, and 40.4% were at risk of malnutrition. Living status, body weight, and appetite were significant factors related to malnutrition in community-dwelling patients with schizophrenia. PRACTICE IMPLICATION Assessment of nutritional status should be considered along with demographic and nutritional factors in community-dwelling patients with schizophrenia.

Abstract
AIMS Although the relationship between body mass index and all-cause mortality is U-shaped, underweight has received comparatively less attention than obesity. There is only limited evidence to date regarding underweight among patients with schizophrenia. This is the first meta-analysis to address the prevalence of underweight in these patients. METHODS We conducted database searches (PubMed, PsycINFO) to identify studies examining underweight in patients with schizophrenia. In total, 17 studies (18 groups) with 45,474 patients were included; data were extracted independently by two authors. A meta-analysis was performed to calculate the pooled prevalence of underweight in patients. RESULTS The pooled prevalence of underweight was 6.2% (95% CI=4.5-8.6) for the 18 groups, which included 45,474 patients with schizophrenia. The heterogeneity was I2=98.9% (95% Cl=98.7-99.1%). Four studies with 4 groups, consisting of 30,014 individuals, focused on Japanese inpatients with schizophrenia. The pooled prevalence of underweight among inpatients in these 4 groups was 17.6% (95% CI=15.5-20.0). Fourteen studies were conducted with non-Japanese inpatients and included 14 groups of 15,460 patients with schizophrenia. The pooled prevalence of underweight in non-Japanese inpatients was 4.6% (95% CI=3.9-5.4). The proportion of underweight in the 18 groups significantly varied between Japanese inpatients and other patients. CONCLUSIONS The results indicated that Japanese inpatients with schizophrenia have a high proportion of underweight. Future research should focus on evaluating interventions that target underweight.
