Abstract
Older Fighters are defined as combat sports athletes older than 35 years, based on heightened medical risks and historical classification. Age-related changes to the neurological, cardiopulmonary, endocrinological, thermoregulatory, osmoregulatory, and musculoskeletal systems increase these athletes' risks for injury and may prolong their recovery. These age-related risks warrant special considerations for competition, licensure, prefight medical clearance, in-fight supervision, post-fight examination, and counseling regarding training practices and retirement from combat sports. Neurological considerations include increased risk of intracranial lesions, intracranial hemorrhage, and sequelae from traumatic brain injury (TBI), warranting more comprehensive neurological evaluation and neuroimaging. Increased risk of myocardial ischemia and infarction warrant careful assessment of cardiac risk factors and scrutiny of cardiovascular fitness. Older fighters may take longer time to recover from musculoskeletal injury; post-injury clearance should be individualized.

Abstract
Traditional combat sports equipment usually uses synthetic materials, such as polyurethane and synthetic leather. Although these materials have a certain degree of strength and durability, they have poor flexibility and antibacterial properties, making it difficult to provide stable support and protection for athletes. In order to enhance the antibacterial properties and flexibility of sports equipment and reduce the risk of injuries to athletes, this article conducts in-depth research on the development of combat sports equipment using conjugated polymers. This article first selects polypropylene (PP) as the base material for sports equipment for combat athletes, and uses the gas phase polymerization method to prepare the material; then uses chitosan as an antimicrobial agent and uses the oxidative degradation method to prepare it; after that, this article coats the chitosan antibacterial agent on the prepared PP material, and uses a combination of dipping and calendering for antibacterial treatment; finally, this article uses the spunbond melt-blown composite method to fill and combine the top equipment of combat athletes to achieve the structural design of sports equipment. In order to verify the effectiveness of the equipment, this article conducted equipment performance testing and sports injury simulation. The results showed that the average diameter of the antibacterial zone of this sports equipment reached more than 1 mm, and in the injury risk test, the risk of athletes' joint and muscle injuries was reduced by 16.9% and 20.5% respectively. Research shows that developing combat sports equipment based on conjugated polymers can help reduce the risk of injury to athletes and improve the safety of combat sports.

Abstract
Introduction Trait anxiety (A-trait) can be seen as a multiplicative function of the person-situation interaction. Considering risk-taking behavior (R-TB), literature highlights instrumental and stimulating risk. The aim of the research is to investigate the level of A-trait (in physically dangerous conditions and in new, unusual situations) and the level of R-TB (instrumental and stimulating risk) in athletes, and to verify to what extent A-trait and risk-taking behavior predict injury severity. Materials and methods One hundred and fifty-four senior martial arts athletes from grappling combat sports, striking combat sports and mixed martial artists (MMA) participated in the study. For assessing trait anxiety and risk-taking behavior, the Romanian adaptation of the Endler Multidimensional Anxiety Scales (EMAS), respectively the Romanian adaptation of the Makarowski's Stimulating and Instrumental Risk Questionnaire were used. Results Using multivariate analysis of variance, significant differences between athletes (according to the sports disciplines practiced), in terms of A-trait and R-TB, were examined. Next, we checked the existing correlations between injury severity, A-trait and R-TB scores in athletes practicing striking combat sports, grappling combat sports and MMA. To verify whether there are significant differences in terms of trait anxiety, stimulating and instrumental risk between athletes who have suffered mild, moderate and/or severe injuries and athletes who have suffered only minor/mild injuries, t-Test for Independent Samples was used. Binomial logistic regression procedures were, also, performed, predicting athletes' likelihood of injury, based on R-TB and A-trait. Conclusion A moderate or slightly below average level of anxiety in new, unusual situations and a higher level of instrumental risk are linked with a decreased likelihood of severe injuries in athletes. Martial arts athletes (in entire sample) who have suffered more severe injuries are more adrenaline-seeking in competition and use less rational thinking, taking more pleasure in just performing technical executions, regardless of the outcome.

Abstract
Background: Each combat sport carries different risks of injury due to the specifics of the sport (including the weight categories and sex) and the fighting techniques used according to different sports regulations. The purpose of this study is to examine injury symmetry in judo. Methods: Injuries recorded in 195 people (93 women, 102 men) suffered during top-level judo tournaments were verified. Using the European Judo Union medical questionnaire, information on injuries was obtained from each injured athlete. Results: Based on the analysis of the results, it can be concluded that injuries are almost evenly distributed on the left and right sides of the body in both men and women. In women, there were 129 injuries to the left side (41.2%), 134 injuries to the right (42.8%), and 50 (16.0%) to the middle part of the body. Conclusions: injuries in judo are evenly distributed and slightly more common on the right side. Injuries occur at a greater rate during defending maneuvers than attacking maneuvers in judo. Identification and monitoring of who (tori or uke) and which side of the body sustains an injury are crucial and important in injury prevention. This knowledge makes it possible to modify existing sports regulations by eliminating behaviors (e.g., certain types of defense) to improve the safety of athletes participating in top-level competitions and the training process in terms of ensuring safety in both attack and defense.

Abstract
Professional football players are exposed to high injury risk due to the physical demands of this sport. The purpose of this study was to characterize the injuries of a professional football team in the First Portuguese League over three consecutive sports seasons. Seventy-one male professional football players in the First Portuguese Football League were followed throughout the sports seasons of 2019/2020, 2020/2021, and 2021/2022. In total, 84 injuries were recorded. Each player missed an average of 16.6 days per injury. Lower limbs were massively affected by injuries across all three seasons, mainly with muscular injuries in the quadriceps and hamstrings and sprains in the tibiotarsal structure. Overall, the injury incidence was considerably higher in matches than in training. The two times of the season that proved most conducive to injuries were the months of July and January. Our results emphasize the importance of monitoring sports performance, including injury occurrence, and assisting in identifying risk factors in professional football. Designing individualized training programs and optimizing prevention and recovery protocols are crucial for maximizing this global process.

Abstract
Changes in exercise behavior and negative emotional states (i.e., depression, anxiety, and stress) in combat sport (e.g., boxing, wrestling, martial arts) athletes were examined the month prior to gym closures related to the COVID-19 pandemic (February 2020), and approximately 1 month following gym closures (May 2020). A total of 312 combat sport athletes from 33 different countries responded to the study solicitation. Results indicated a significant decrease in combat sport training following gym closures; however, participation in other exercise activities did not significantly change. Significant mean increases in depression, anxiety, and stress were found following combat gym closures. Regression analyses revealed that number of hours of participants participated in combat sport training added significant incremental variance explained in depressive and stress symptoms above and beyond that accounted for by sex differences, preexisting conditions, and training level. Practical implications regarding losses to preferred exercise activities are discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to analyze the level of disability and pain in capoeira practitioners. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study. Data collection took place at the training sites of participants. The Self-Estimated Functional Inability because of Pain questionnaire for athletes (SEFIP-sport) was used to assess the pain and disability. Descriptive analysis was performed with the presentation of variables through mean and standard deviation (SD) or absolute number and percentage. RESULTS The sample consisted of 65 capoeira practitioners. Of these, 42 (64.61%) reported pain or discomfort. The total score of the SEFIP-sport presented an average of 2.28 points (SD=2.65). The body regions with the highest reports of pain and disability were the knees, lower back, and wrist/hands. However, we observed a mild degree of disability measured by SEFIP-sport. CONCLUSIONS The knees, lower back, and wrists/hands were the regions of the body with the highest reports of pain and disability. However, the disability presented by capoeira practitioners was slight.

The Relationship Between Fighting Style, Cognition, and Regional Brain Volume in Professional Combatants: A Preliminary Examination Using Brief Neurocognitive Measures. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Repetitive head impacts (RHIs) in combat sports are associated with cognitive decline and brain volume reduction. While fighting style differences between boxers, mixed martial artists (MMAs), and martial artists (MAs) have resulted in a broader spectrum of injury, the effects of RHIs on MAs relative to other fighters have not yet been explored. This study aimed to determine a differential effect of fighting style on cognition and brain. SETTING A large outpatient medical center specializing in neurological care. PARTICIPANTS, DESIGN, AND MAIN MEASURES In total, 40 MAs, 188 boxers, and 279 MMAs were compared on baseline measures of subcortical regional brain volumes, after controlling for total brain volumes, and cognitive performance. RESULTS Significant differences between MAs, MMAs, and boxers were observed in subcortical brain structure volumes and cognitive measures. MMAs and MAs consistently had larger volumes and higher scores than boxers. Fighting style significantly moderated the relationship between the number of professional fights and the volumes of various subcortical brain structures and performance on a measure of processing speed at baseline. CONCLUSIONS Differences in RHIs across fighting styles may be of clinical significance. Exploring changes over time within the MA, boxer, and MMA cohorts may provide insight into longer-term discrepancies in subcortical regional brain volumes and cognitive functioning across fighting styles.

Abstract
Aim: The physiological realities between Taekwondo (TKD) simulation kicking training and TKD competition according to the Olympic time frame remain unclear. The purpose of this study is to establish an Olympic match-simulated kicking model and compare its effects with real TKD competition on physiological challenges and hormonal responses during serial matches in elite athletes. Method: Sixteen elite TKD athletes randomly were assigned into either a TKD match-simulated kicking group (TMSK; N = 8, age: 21.3 ± 0.2 years) or a simulated TKD competition group (STC; N = 8, age: 21.6 ± 0.5 years). Both groups performed either simulated kicking or TKD competitions in the same time-course order, and all physiological parameters and blood sampling time-points were identical between groups. The heart rate (HR) and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) were recorded during each match-simulated kicking and TKD competition session. Blood samples were obtained before competition (Pre-Comp.), after competition—in ths case meaning four consecutive matches (End-Comp.), and 24 h after the first match (Next day) for determination of biomarkers of muscle damage (myoglobin and CK), hematological profiles, and hormonal profiles (testosterone and cortisol). Results: The responses of HR, RPE, and blood lactate levels during the consecutive testing sessions showed no differences between TMSK and STC. The changes in CK and myoglobin were greater in STC (p < 0.05), and a greater decrease in red blood cell (RBC) loss was observed in the STC group (p < 0.05). Compared with TMSK, the inflammatory state, reflected by the ratios of neutrophils-to-lymphocyte (NLR) and platelets-to-lymphocyte (PLR), was higher in STC (p < 0.05). Moreover, the catabolic state (cortisol/testosterone) was greater in STC than in TMSK (p < 0.05). Conclusion: We demonstrated that, compared with TMSK, the STC produced greater muscle damage, inflammatory responses, and catabolic stress in the Olympic competition time frame in elite male TKD athletes. Although TMSK is capable of eliciting similar physiological challenges as TKD competition, the muscle damage and hormonal profiles provoked by TMSK were not comparable to TKD competition. Our findings provide science-based data and better understanding for coaches, athletes, and sports scientists to develop TKD-specific training programs for Olympic preparation.

Abstract
RESUMO O CrossFit se apresenta como um novo método de treinamento físico que vem ganhando popularidade desde sua criação. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar o perfil de lesões em praticantes de CrossFit por meio de uma revisão sistemática da literatura. Utilizaram-se as recomendações da Declaração PRISMA para condução da revisão sistemática. A busca foi realizada nas bases de dados CINAHL, SciELO, Science Direct, SCOPUS, LILACS, PEDro, PubMed, SPORTDiscus e Web of Science. Avaliou-se a qualidade metodológica dos estudos, entre os quais dez foram considerados elegíveis. A prevalência de lesões nos praticantes de CrossFit variou de 5 a 73,5%, e a taxa de lesão variou de 1,94 a 3,1 lesões a cada 1.000 horas de treinamento. A região corporal mais acometida por lesões nos estudos selecionados foram os ombros, seguidos pelas costas e joelhos. Em relação aos fatores associados às lesões, destacou-se o tipo de exercício realizado e o tempo de prática de CrossFit. O sexo apresentou associação com a prevalência de lesões, estudos demonstraram que os homens apresentaram maior número de lesões em relação às mulheres. A idade esteve entre os fatores que não estiveram associados às lesões. Conclui-se que os ombros são a região corporal mais comumente acometida entre os praticantes de CrossFit, em indivíduos do sexo masculino e com lesões prévias, muitas vezes obtidas em outras modalidades. Ainda, que o CrossFit pode ser praticado com segurança por indivíduos de 18 a 69 anos.
