Recent atmospheric metal deposition in peatlands of northeast China: A review

Isotopic evidence of autochthonous organic matter acting as a major sink of anthropogenic heavy metals in modern lacustrine sediments

The knowledge of major sources, sinks, and the burial fate of various pollutants added to modern aquatic ecosystems under changing environmental conditions is limited but crucial for our sustainability. In this context, the spatial distributions and causative factors of organic matter (OM) and heavy metal accumulations have been explored in modern lacustrine sediments of a large urbanized and protected wetland (ULB: Upper Lake Bhopal) in Central India. For this purpose, geochemical properties, in particular, stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) were measured in the ULB surficial sediments (core depth ∼0-1 cm; n = 19), and additionally collected riverbed sediments (n = 2) and atmospheric free-fall dust samples (n = 3) from the lake periphery. The major and trace element data indicate widespread mafic sediment provenance and nearly dysoxic lacustrine conditions. The riverine supply of soil OM from cropped lands and the lake productivity (algae, largely sustained by nutrients from sewage and agricultural runoff) are the major OM sources to the western and eastern lake portions, respectively. The fractional contribution from autochthonous TOC (∼0.19-0.95, mean ∼0.62) predominates that of allochthonous TOC (∼0.05-0.81, mean ∼0.38). Whereas, atmospheric dust deposition is a primary anthropogenic source of heavy metals (Pb and Zn). The lake productivity rather than soil OM or any mineral sorbent is found responsible for the anthropogenic enrichments of Pb and Zn in the ULB surficial sediments, especially on the eastern ULB portion under high anthropogenic pressure. Therefore, the settled OM (primarily autochthonous) being oxidizable acts as a temporary but major sink of anthropogenic heavy metals in modern lacustrine sediments, which are vulnerable to heavy metal efflux to the water column by sediment diagenesis.

Investigation of 200 anthropogenic activities in a representative alpine peatland in the Altay Mountains, northwestern China

Peatlands records can be used to reconstruct and understand the history of environmental evolution, as well as a more accurate reflection of human activities. The black carbon (BC) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ideal natural archives of anthropogenic activities. To identify the information of anthropogenic activities recorded by peatlands in the middle and high latitudes of the alpine mountains in the arid and semi-arid regions of China. this study analyzed the concentrations of BC, δ13C ratios of BC, PAHs, and molecular diagnostic ratios of PHAs (including Benzo(a) anthracene (BaA), Chrysene (Chr), fluoranthene (Flt), anthracene (Ant), phenanthrene (Phe), Benzo(a) pyrene (BaP), and pyrene (Pyr) in a 30-cm peat profile from the Altay Mountain, northwestern China. Our results revealed concentrations of BC from 11.71 to 67.5 mg·g-1, and PAHs from 168.09 to 263.53 ng·g-1. The δ13CBC value ranged from - 31.37 to - 26.27‰, with an average of - 29.54‰, indicating that the BC mainly comes from biomass combustion. The ratios of BaA/(BaA + Chr), Flt/(Flt + Pyr), and Ant/(Ant + Phe) exceeded 0.35, 0.5, and 0.1, respectively, revealing that the PAHs pollutants mainly originated from the combustion of biomass and fossil fuel burning. Furthermore, based on these findings and our knowledge of social development in Altay, industrial transport and tourism have influenced the emission, transport, and deposition of BC and PAH in peatlands in the Altay mountains since the 1980s. After 1980, pollutant concentrations decreased with the implementation of environmental policies. The results not only reveal the influence of anthropogenic activities on the sedimentary characteristics of peatlands in the Altay Mountains, but also provide an important theoretical basis for the conservation of fragile mountain peatlands.

Global Patterns of Metal and Other Element Enrichment in Bog and Fen Peatlands

Peatlands are found on all continents, covering 3% of the global land area. However, the spatial extent and causes of metal enrichment in peatlands is understudied and no attempt has been made to evaluate global patterns of metal enrichment in bog and fen peatlands, despite that certain metals and rare earth elements (REE) arise from anthropogenic sources. We analyzed 368 peat cores sampled in 16 countries across five continents and measured metal and other element concentrations at three depths down to 70 cm as well as estimated cumulative atmospheric S deposition (1850-2009) for each site. Sites were assigned to one of three distinct broadly recognized peatland categories (bog, poor fen, and intermediate-to-moderately rich fen) that varied primarily along a pH gradient. Metal concentrations differed among peatland types, with intermediate-to-moderately rich fens demonstrating the highest concentrations of most metals. Median enrichment factors (EFs; a metric comparing natural and anthropogenic metal deposition) for individual metals were similar among bogs and fens (all groups), with metals likely to be influenced by anthropogenic sources (As, Cd, Co, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Sb) demonstrating median enrichment factors (EFs) > 1.5. Additionally, mean EFs were substantially higher than median values, and the positive correlation (< 0.40) with estimated cumulative atmospheric S deposition, confirmed some level of anthropogenic influence of all pollutant metals except for Hg that was unrelated to S deposition. Contrary to expectations, high EFs were not restricted to pollutant metals, with Mn, K and Rb all exhibiting elevated median EFs that were in the same range as pollutant metals likely due to peatland biogeochemical processes leading to enrichment of these nutrients in surface soil horizons. The global patterns of metal enrichment in bogs and fens identified in this study underscore the importance of these peatlands as environmental archives of metal deposition, but also illustrates that biogeochemical processes can enrich metals in surface peat and EFs alone do not necessarily indicate atmospheric contamination.

Accumulation Pattern and Risk Assessment of Potentially Toxic Elements in Permafrost-Affected Agricultural Soils in Northeast China

The accumulation of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in agricultural soils is of particular concern in China, while its status, ecological risks, and human health hazards have been little studied in the permafrost areas of Northeast China. In this study, 75 agricultural soil samples (0-20 cm) were collected from the Arctic Village, Mo'he City, in the northernmost part of China. The average concentration (mean ± standard deviation) of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn were 12.11 ± 3.66 mg/kg, 0.11 ± 0.08 mg/kg, 52.50 ± 8.83 mg/kg, 12.08 ± 5.12 mg/kg, 0.05 ± 0.02 mg/kg, 14.90 ± 5.35 mg/kg, 22.38 ± 3.04 mg/kg, and 68.07 ± 22.71 mg/kg, respectively. Correlation analysis, cluster analysis, and principal component analysis indicated that As, Cu, Ni, and Zn likely originated from geogenic processes, Hg and Pb from long-range atmospheric transport, Cd from planting activities, and Cr from Holocene alluvium. The geo-accumulation index and enrichment factor showed that As, Cd, Hg, and Zn are enriched in soils. The Nemerow pollution index showed that 66.67%, 24%, and 1.33% of soil samples were in slight, moderate, and heavy pollution levels, respectively, with Hg being the most important element affecting the comprehensive pollution index. The potential ecological risk index showed that 48.00% and 1.33% of soil samples were in the moderate ecological risk and high potential ecological risk levels, respectively. The non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic human health risk index for adults and children were both less than 1, which was within the acceptable range. This study revealed the accumulation pattern of PTEs in agricultural soils of permafrost regions and provided a scientific basis for research on ecological security and human health.

Interactions among heavy metals and methane-metabolizing microorganisms and their effects on methane emissions in Dajiuhu peatland

Peatlands play a crucial role in mediating the emissions of methane through active biogeochemical cycling of accumulated carbon driven by methane-metabolizing microorganisms; meanwhile, they serve as vital archives of atmospheric heavy metal deposition. Despite many edaphic factors confirmed as determinants to modulate the structure of methanotrophic and methanogenic communities, recognition of interactions among them is limited. In this study, peat soils were collected from Dajiuhu peatland to assess the presence of heavy metals, and methanotrophs and methanogens were investigated via high-throughput sequencing for functional genes mcrA and pmoA. Further analyses of the correlations between methane-related functional groups were conducted. The results demonstrated that both methane-metabolizing microorganisms and heavy metals have prominent vertical heterogeneity upward and downward along the depth of 20 cm. Pb, Cd, and Hg strongly correlated with methanotrophs and methanogens across all seasons and depths, serving as forceful factors in structural variations of methanogenic and methanotrophic communities. Particularly, Pb, Cd, and Hg were identified as excessive elements in Dajiuhu peatland. Furthermore, seasonal variations of networks among methane-related functional groups and environmental factors significantly affected the changes of methane fluxes across different seasons. Concretely, the complicated interactions were detrimental to methane emissions in the Dajiuhu peatland, leading to the minimum methane emissions in winter. Our study identified the key heavy metals affecting the composition of methane-metabolizing microorganisms and linkages between seasonal variations of methane emissions and interaction among heavy metals and methane-metabolizing microorganisms, which provided much new reference and theoretical basis for integrated management of natural peatlands.

Record of heavy metals in Huguangyan Maar Lake sediments: Response to anthropogenic atmospheric pollution in Southern China

The historical atmospheric heavy metal pollution of southern China over the past 200 years was explored by analyzing radiometric dating, heavy metals, and Pb isotopes from a sediment core in Huguangyan Maar Lake. Zn, Cd, Sb, Tl, and Pb in the lake are closely related to anthropogenic activities, while Cr and Ni are mainly derived from the weathering of basalt surrounding the lake. Atmospheric Zn, Cd, Sb, and Tl increased rapidly after 1980, consistent with the local industrial development. The increase of atmospheric Pb in southern China occurred earlier than in other regions of China, with the increase after 1850. War and the use of leaded gasoline were the main causes for the rapid increase in atmospheric Pb during 1910-1950. From 1950 to 2000, the input of Pb from anthropogenic activities decreased gradually due to the stable social environment. After 2000, atmospheric Pb continued to rise due to continued industrial development. The three-end-member model of Pb isotopes indicates that coal combustion is the main source of current atmospheric Pb. The proportion of Pb derived from vehicle exhaust emissions reached a peak in the 1960s, then gradually decreased and further reduced with the ban on leaded gasoline after 2000. These results are important in identifying the sources of atmospheric heavy metal pollution and in formulating pollution control strategies.

Historical trends in atmospheric metal(loid) contamination in North China over the past half-millennium reconstructed from subalpine lake sediment

Trace metal (loid) contamination in the atmosphere is widely monitored, but there is a gap in understanding its long-term patterns, especially in North China, which is currently a global contamination hotspot mainly caused by heavy industry emissions and coal combustion. Herein, historical trends of atmospheric As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn contamination in North China over the past ∼500 years are comparatively studied with sediment cores from two subalpine lakes (Gonghai and Muhai). Arsenic, Pb, Cd and Hg were main pollutants according to Pb isotopes and enrichment factors. Mercury contamination has increased continuously since the late 1800s and increasing As, Pb and Cd contamination started in the 1950s in Gonghai. In contrast, the contamination in Muhai lagged two decades for As, Cd and Pb and a half-century for Hg behind that in Gonghai, although the trends were similar. This contamination lag was attributed to the low sensitivity of Muhai sediment to early weak atmospheric metal contamination under 2.1-fold higher detrital sedimentation. As, Pb and Cd contamination has intensified since the 1980s, and the metals showed similar sedimentary fluxes in the cores. However, sedimentary fluxes of Hg contamination were 3.4-fold higher in Gonghai than in Muhai due to combination with organic matter. No obvious Cr, Cu and Ni contamination in the cores was mainly because of the low atmospheric deposition from anthropogenic sources relative to detrital input, although some of their atmospheric emissions were higher than those of As, Cd and Hg. Atmospheric As, Pb and Cd contamination was mainly from domestic sources of coal combustion and nonferrous smelting. Mercury contamination was mainly from global and Asian sources in the first half of the 20th century, and domestic emissions gradually dominated Hg contamination after the mid-1900s.

Research Progress on Heavy Metals Pollution in the Soil of Smelting Sites in China

Contamination by heavy metals is a significant issue worldwide. In recent decades, soil heavy metals pollutants in China had adverse impacts on soil quality and threatened food security and human health. Anthropogenic inputs mainly generate heavy metal contamination in China. In this review, the approaches were used in these investigations, focusing on geochemical strategies and metal isotope methods, particularly useful for determining the pathway of mining and smelting derived pollution in the soil. Our findings indicate that heavy metal distribution substantially impacts topsoils around mining and smelting sites, which release massive amounts of heavy metals into the environment. Furthermore, heavy metal contamination and related hazards posed by Pb, Cd, As, and Hg are more severe to plants, soil organisms, and humans. It's worth observing that kids are particularly vulnerable to Pb toxicity. And this review also provides novel approaches to control and reduce the impacts of heavy metal pollution. Hydrometallurgy offers a potential method for extracting metals and removing potentially harmful heavy metals from waste to reduce pollution. However, environmentally friendly remediation of contaminated sites is a significant challenge. This paper also evaluates current technological advancements in the remediation of polluted soil, such as stabilization/solidification, natural attenuation, electrokinetic remediation, soil washing, and phytoremediation. The ability of biological approaches, especially phytoremediation, is cost-effective and favorable to the environment.

Plant succession and geochemical indices in immature peatlands in the Changbai Mountains, northeastern region of China: Implications for climate change and peatland development

Peatlands cover a small portion of the Earth's land surface but hold ~30% of soil carbon (C) globally. However, few studies have focused on the early stage of peatland development, which is a key stage in the initial C sink function of peatlands. An immature peatland is vulnerable to changes in environmental conditions, e.g., temperature and water conditions, as the peat accumulation process can be easily interrupted by such changes. It is important to understand how immature peatlands develop, what conditions are beneficial to this process, and the present status of these important peatlands. Plant macrofossil analysis and geochemical characteristics of peat were used to determine the plant succession and the degree of decomposition at two peatlands developing in the Changbai Mountain region of northeastern China. The results show that during the entire plant community succession, plants in the two studied peatlands are mainly characterized by sedges (Cyperaceae) and mosses (mainly Sphagnum). Plant macrofossil analysis reveals a wetter trend in the Yuan Lake (YL) peatland in the most upper part of peat layer, which provides favorable conditions for peat accumulation and peatland development. The C/N ratios of core Chi Lake (CL) show a steady peat decomposition and accumulation process in the CL peatland. Additionally, there was a clear impact of presence of Sphagnum on the variations in the C/N ratio. In the YL peatland, macro-charcoal pieces indicated that fire events during dry hydrological conditions had great effects on biogeochemical processes within the peatland, affecting peat decomposition and the succession of the local plant community. An increase in major and trace elements suggests only weak disturbance due to the considerable distance to human settlements. This study determines the characteristics of pristine mountainous peatlands and highlights the importance of understanding the regular plant community in the early stage of peatland formation, as well as its potential effects on C sinks.

The elemental enrichments at Dajiuhu Peatland in the Middle Yangtze Valley in response to changes in East Asian monsoon and human activity since 20,000 cal yr BP

Here we present multiproxy inorganic geochemical records from a peat core (ZK5) from the Dajiuhu Basin in central China to investigate peatland deposition processes and atmospheric metal pollution and to explore their relationships with East Asian monsoon change and human activities in the Middle Yangtze Valley since 20,000 cal yr BP. The peat physicochemical data including total organic carbon (TOC), trace elements, and grain-size show that the site has changed from a lake during the cold-wet Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; 20,000-18,000 cal yr BP), to a marshy wetland during the mild last deglaciation (18,000-11,500 cal yr BP) and a peatland during the mostly warm and dry Holocene (11,500 cal yr BP-present). This general sequence corresponds with changes in East Asian monsoon indicated by stalagmites δ¹⁸O records and boreal summer insolation. Marked decreases in trace element concentrations correspond to two periods of peatland expansion during the abrupt hydroclimatic transitions from the LGM to the last deglaciation and from the last deglaciation to the early Holocene. Warm-dry mid-Holocene might induce high organic matter decomposition in peat sediments. Increasing natural element concentrations since the late Holocene are correlated with the weakening of the summer monsoon and elevated atmospheric dust deposition. Increasing Cu and Pb concentrations in peat record indicate large-scale Cu smelting during the Bronze Age and excessive coal burning during the 10th century or so. The anthropogenic heavy metals were transported by prevailing East Asian summer monsoon and deposited in the Dajiuhu Basin during periods of heightened human activities. Our compilation of heavy metals records across China confirmed the noticeable impacts of the historical human activity on deposition environments during the late Holocene. Consequently, trace elements from the Dajiuhu Basin are reliable proxies for capturing monsoon climate-induced peatland deposition response and present important evidence for a historical atmospheric heavy metal pollution in the Middle Yangtze Valley. Our results offer useful references for peatland evolution and protection under the background of global change.

Ecotoxicology of Heavy Metal(loid)-Enriched Particulate Matter: Foliar Accumulation by Plants and Health Impacts

Atmospheric contamination by heavy metal-enriched particulate matter (metal-PM) is highly topical nowadays because of its high persistence and toxic nature. Metal-PMs are emitted to the atmosphere by various natural and anthropogenic activities, the latter being the major source. After being released into the atmosphere, metal-PM can travel over a long distance and can deposit on the buildings, water, soil, and plant canopy. In this way, these metal-PMs can contaminate different parts of the ecosystem. In addition, metal-PMs can be directly inhaled by humans and induce several health effects. Therefore, it is of great importance to understand the fate and behavior of these metal-PMs in the environment. In this review, we highlighted the atmospheric contamination by metal-PMs, possible sources, speciation, transport over a long distance, and deposition on soil, plants, and buildings. This review also describes the foliar deposition and uptake of metal-PMs by plants. Moreover, the inhalation of these metal-PMs by humans and the associated health risks have been critically discussed. Finally, the article proposed some key management strategies and future perspectives along with the summary of the entire review. The abovementioned facts about the biogeochemical behavior of metal-PMs in the ecosystem have been supported with well-summarized tables (total 14) and figures (4), which make this review article highly informative and useful for researchers, scientists, students, policymakers, and the organizations involved in development and management. It is proposed that management strategies should be developed and adapted to cope with atmospheric release and contamination of metal-PM.

Spatiotemporal trends of atmospheric Pb over the last century across inland China

Sedimentary records from remote regions contain pollutants derived dominantly from atmospheric input, and thus have the potential to trace past atmospheric pollution history. Based on seventeen sediment records from relatively remote areas of China, atmospheric Pb pollution history during the last century was studied. These records suggest only occasionally slight pollution before ~1950 and display synchronous Pb enrichment processes since the 1950s, implying the start of widespread atmospheric Pb pollution in China. This corresponded well with the beginning of socio-economic development after the establishment of the People's Republic of China. However, owing to the Chinese Cultural Revolution, a roughly unchanged atmospheric Pb status was found in the 1960-70s except on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, where atmospheric Pb still increased gradually caused by long-range atmospheric transport of pollutants from southwest Asia. In ~1980-2000, atmospheric Pb experienced the greatest increase, resulting from rapid development of extensive economy after the Reform and Opening-up in 1978. After ~2000, atmospheric Pb generally stopped increase due to the phasing out of leaded gasoline, but it remained high, with the highest in Southwest China, medium in Northeast China, central North China and the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, and the lowest in the southeast Mongolia Plateau and West China. This study reveals spatio-temporal variations of atmospheric Pb in inland China under the influence of recent human activities, providing an important supplement for understanding global Pb pollution in the Anthropocene.

Source apportionment of priority PAHs in 11 lake sediment cores from Songnen Plain, Northeast China

Elevated concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been observed with rapid agricultural and industrial development in the Songnen Plain, Northeast China, but the prospective sources have not been yet apportioned. The concentration of PAHs was measured in 31 sediment samples from 11 Songnen Plain lakes in 2015. The background flux of PAHs in these lake sediments is < 463 μg m^-2 year^-1. The maximal concentration of 16 U.S. EPA priority PAHs (599 ng g^-1) recorded in this study is lower or similar to that found in most of the lake sediments across China, but higher than remote areas, such as North America Rocky Mountains. Both concentration and flux of PAHs increased after the 1950s, which correspond to the industrial development in this area and would probably mark the beginning of the Anthropocene in this region. A chemical mass balance model estimated that straw burning was a major source of Σ₁₃PAH (3-6 rings) during the past 200 years, with an average contribution of 22.1%, followed by forest fire (21.2%), burning of gasoline (19.1%), coal (12.2%), coke (4.8%) and diesel (3.9%), whereas the contribution from crude oil and natural gas was negligible (<1%). Straw burning (20.2-25.2%) and forest fire (16.7-30.6%) were major sources of PAHs and contributed increasing flux in the past 200 years. The elevated level of PAH recorded after 1950s in this region are also from burning of gasoline (26.1-26.4%), coal (15.3-15.8%), and coke (5.1-9.0%). The contribution of petrogenic sources (e.g., direct oil spill) to the concentration of Σ₁₃PAH seemed to be ignorable, at least in these lakes.

Environmental legacy and catchment erosion modulate sediment records of trace metals in alpine lakes of southwest China

Sediment records are widely used to infer impact of atmospheric metal deposition in alpine lakes, however, the legacy effect and catchment erosion of historical pollutants could potentially affect metal influx into lakes. Here, we collect data (including six trace metals and three lithogenic elements) from well-dated sediment cores of seven alpine lakes in southeast Tibet, which is adjacent to southwest China. This area has a documented history of preindustrial pollution. Metals such as cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn) and arsenic (As) are found at relatively low concentrations until a clear increase is observed after 1950s across lakes. This result is consistent with accelerating atmospheric metal deposition due to socio-economic development in the region. We observe no synchronous trend across lakes in the changes of lead (Pb), copper (Cu) and silver (Ag), which show no significant increase after ∼1950 over the last two centuries in most of the study lakes. The historical trends of ²⁰⁶Pb/²⁰⁷Pb ratio reflect an important source of anthropogenic Pb associated with preindustrial mining and smelting in this study region, suggesting a substantial impact of legacy contamination from ancient mines. Furthermore, the temporal variations in these six anthropogenic metals are largely accounted for by terrigenous elements (e.g. aluminum (Al) and titanium (Ti)) in most of the study lakes, and to a lesser degree by sediment grain sizes and organic matter content, suggesting a significant role of catchment erosion in modulating sediment metal signals. In all, this study highlights the legacy effect of historical pollutants may have enhanced the forcing of catchment erosion in modulating the sediment signals of anthropogenic deposition in southeast Tibet.

Anthropogenic and lithogenic fluxes of atmospheric lead deposition over the past 3600 years from a peat bog, Changbai Mountains, China

Ombrotrophic peatlands are widely used to reconstruct atmospheric metal deposition histories. Here, we estimated the long-term atmospheric Pb deposition flux using ombrotrophic peatland data from the Changbai Mountains, northeast China. A peat profile of 320-cm depth was sampled and cut into 164 slices for measurement of Pb and other elements by ICP-MS and ICP-AES and radiometric dating by ²¹⁰Pb, ¹³⁷Cs and ¹⁴C. Pb concentration in the peat ranged from 2.18 to 68.33 mg kg^-1, while the atmospheric Pb deposition flux ranged from 0.12 to 12.49 mg m^-2 a^-1. The Little Ice Age (cold and wet climate) led to low Pb concentration, Pb/Sc ratio, and Pb deposition flux (4.40 ± 0.70 mg kg^-1, 2.04 ± 0.38, and 0.28 ± 0.09 mg m^-2 a^-1, respectively). On the other hand, intense volcanic eruptions resulted in high Pb concentration, Pb/Sc ratio, and P flux (54.48 ± 13.08 mg kg^-1, 7.85 ± 2.09, and 8.15 ± 2.85 mg m^-2 a^-1, respectively). In addition, rapid economic development since the 1980s resulted in a gradual increase of anthropogenic Pb concentration from 1.54 mg kg^-1 to 5.85 mg kg^-1; thus, the anthropogenic Pb deposition flux (0.43 ± 0.21 mg m^-2 a^-1) was high during this period. In general, peat Pb concentration and atmospheric Pb deposition fluxes in this region have been affected by climate change, volcanic eruptions, and human activities. It was further demonstrated that atmospheric Pb emissions and deposition in China decreased since leaded gasoline was phased out in 2001. The results are critical to understand the geochemistry of Pb and to assess the effects of human activities on atmospheric Pb emissions and deposition in China.

Anthropogenic impacts in the Changbai Mountain region of NE China over the last 150 years: geochemical records of peat and altitude effects

Geochemical records from peatlands are important tools for the interpretation of environmental signals preserved in the peat and the understanding anthropogenic impacts on remote mountain regions. In this paper, six ²¹⁰Pb-dated peat cores located at 500-1900 m above sea level (asl) in the Changbai Mountains were used to reconstruct the pollution history over the past 150 years in northeastern (NE) China. The cores physicochemical parameters and 10 key chemical elements were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). Results from loss on ignition (LOI), total organic carbon (TOC), and lithogenic element (Ti, Fe, and Mn) analysis show that the peatlands (Ch, Yc1 and Jb) over 900 m asl are ombrotrophic and the lower altitude peatlands (Dng, Jc, and Ha) are minerotrophic. There is a decreasing trend of trace element distribution with the altitude, mainly due to the local source input. The content of the magnetic particles and trace elements (Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) as well as their accumulation rates document 150 years of pollution history in the Changbai Mountain region. There is a significant elevated pattern of the geochemical records after the New China, which might mark the start date of Anthropocene since the 1950s in this region. The peatlands at the lower altitude (i.e., Dng and Ha) record the earliest fingerprints of metal contamination due to the starting period of massive reclaiming and immigrating in the Changbai Mountain region. The major increase of trace elements since the 1980s probably suggests a significant deterioration of the local environment due to the fast industrial and urbanization development after the Reform and Opening up in China.

Bulk/wet deposition of trace metals to rural, industrial, and urban areas in the Yangtze River Delta, China

The bulk depositions of trace metals to three land uses in the Yangtze River Delta are investigated based on the collected 154 precipitation samples from August 2015 to May 2017. The volume-weighted mean (VWM) concentrations of Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb were 13.28, 5.32, 13.02, 0.33, and 10.53 μg L^-1, and 12%, 16%, 3%, 11%, and 26% of precipitation events exceeded the limits in the Central Drinking-Water Source Area (GB3838-2002), respectively. Furthermore, the five metals varied significantly under urban, industrial, and rural land use conditions, indicating that these metal concentrations were greatly determined by local sources; lower concentrations were found in sea and local air masses than in air masses from inland trajectories. Combining the precipitation amounts, the bulk deposition fluxes of the five metals were 25.99, 25.47, 20.60, 10.40, 0.64 mg m^-2 yr^-1. By comparing the metal deposition fluxes in 98 studies across China, Ni and Pb deposition in the Yangtze River Delta was higher, while that of Cd and Zn was lower than their respective averages across China, indicating that Ni and Pb pollution should receive more attention in the study area. CAPSULE: Bulk/wet deposition fluxes of trace metals varied greatly among rural, industrial, and urban areas, and Pb and Ni showed severe pollution levels in the Yangtze River Delta.

The response of larvae Brachymystax lenok during continuous and single pulses exposure to copper, zinc, lead and cadmium

The continuous and single pulses exposure of Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd on larvae Brachymystax lenok were tested in this study. The first-order kinetics was employed to obtain better comprehension on the time-toxicity relationship of tested heavy metals in continuous exposure test. For difference in time-varying exposure or recovery, 50% lethal time-averaged concentration (TAC) was used to assess the pulsed toxicity, which took both time and concentration into consideration in exposure and post-exposure period. TAC assessment to the single pulses and the regression analysis of first-order kinetic to continuous exposures demonstrated that Cu and Zn showed greater toxicity than Pb and Cd, indicating a slower uptake and/or depuration effect for zinc or copper. Furthermore, the results showed that recovery effect of larvae to all four metals was found in 24 h exposure followed by 72 h in fresh water, while for 72 h exposure and 24 h non-exposure the delayed lethal phenomenon occurred.

Ecological risk assessment and distribution of potentially harmful trace elements in lake sediments of Songnen Plain, NE China

In order to understand the distribution and the ecological risk of the potentially harmful trace elements (PHTEs) in lake sediments of Songnen Plain, northeast (NE) China, an integrated survey of PHTEs (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn and Ti) was conducted in July 2015 in 11 shallow lakes adjacent to Qiqihar and Daqing. The enrichment factor (EF) and Index of geoaccumulation (I_geo) results showed that Cd was obviously enriched in all lakes and reached the moderate pollution level. A comparison of PHTE concentrations in the lake sediments from 2005 to 2015 found the PHTEs pollution status doubled. Multivariate statistical analysis identified the heavy industries of petroleum and steel in the cities close to lakes and excessive agricultural fertilizing in the region as possible pollution sources of the PHTEs. The Håkanson index method (RI) and the sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) were used to assess the potential risk of PHTEs in sediments. The risk degree of 11 lakes had reached a medium level of potential ecological risk except for one lake which had a low potential ecological risk status. The Songnen Plain has been significantly affected by anthropogenic activities and this study provides an effective reference for the environmental protection and management of lakes (heavy metal pollution and control) around the heavy industrial cities of China and the world.
