Nanomaterials for treating emerging contaminants in water by adsorption and photocatalysis: Systematic review and bibliometric analysis

Investigation study of methyl violet photodegradation over alginate-carboxymethyl cellulose/titanium(IV) oxide/covalent organic frameworks bio-nanocomposite beads under ultraviolet irradiation

Concerned about water treatment, it is of great importance to present new approaches for improving photocatalytic activity. Since photocatalysis is ubiquitous in almost all chemical manufacturing processes, the development of photocatalytic systems carries significance for our environment. In this regard, three different amounts of covalent organic frameworks decorated with titanium(IV) oxide nanoparticles (TiO2/COF hybrids) in Alginate-Carboxymethyl cellulose (Alg-CMC) blend matrix were prepared under ultrasound irradiation, which Citric acid and Calcium chloride acted as two green cross-linkages. Based on the physio-chemical analyses of these bio-nanocomposite (bio-NC) beads, the Alg-CMC blend polymer appeared to be the best candidate for a disparity of TiO2/COF hybrids. Not only did COF aid to increase the distribution of TiO2 nanoparticles, but it declined the bandgap energies. The resultant Alg-CMC/TiO2/COF (TiO2/COF = 15:6) bio-NC beads demonstrated efficient photodegradation activity towards Methyl violet (MV) under Ultraviolet light. The obtained results of scavenger studies indicated that superoxide radicals and electron agents played a major role in MV degradation. Further investigation confirmed that single oxygen addition and N-de-methylation could be two important pathways for the decomposition of MV by these bio-NC beads.

A bibliometric analysis of global research hotspots and progress on emerging environmental pollutants 6PPD and 6PPD-quinone from 2004 to 2024

The emerging toxicants, N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine quinone (6PPD-Q), resulting from environmental exposure to N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD), have gained considerable attention owing to their ubiquitous occurrence and high toxicity. We performed a scientometric analysis on this topical area of research over the past two decades, spanning from 2004 to April 2024. The overarching aim was to reveal potential future directions in this research area, exploring several key aspects. These included publication and citation growth trends, relevant subject fields, distribution of contribution by country, influential journals in the field, keyword co-occurrence network and cluster analysis, and identification of top authors. The information was collected from the Scopus database and processed using the VOS viewer software. We observed a notable increase in the number of publications over the past four years. With a share of 46.2% of publications, "Environmental Sciences" dominated as the primary scientific category. Among all journals, "Science of the Total Environment" was the most prolific, publishing 33 documents, accounting for 15.6% of the total records. China, representing 76 publications (36%), followed by the United States, with 40 (18.9%), stood out as the leading countries. The occurrence of keywords such as "Pollution exposure", "Mass spectrometry", and "toxicity" highlighted the importance of assessing the toxicological properties, analytical methods, and environmental implications of these emerging contaminants to mitigate their adverse effects and protect environmental and human health. Cai, Zongwei from Hong Kong Baptist University was highly productive in this field, publishing 11 papers. Based on the bibliometric analysis presented, it seems that the future direction of research on 6PPD and 6PPD-Q will shift towards strategies focused on their removal and treatment.

Multispectral imaging in medicine: A bibliometric study

Multispectral Imaging has been used in many fields. In the medical field, Multispectral Imaging is still in its infancy. However, due to its excellent potential, it will also become one of the most important medical imaging in the future. This paper is the first bibliometric study in this field. The study comprehensively searched all relevant documents in Web of Science Core Collection from Jan 1, 1999 to Dec 31, 2022, systematically sorted out the author, journal, country and institution in this field, and analyzed the keywords. Based on this, the study suggests that researchers and healthcare workers should strengthen cooperation to apply Multispectral Imaging to more medical fields while further developing related technologies. At the same time, in the future, this field should focus on non-ex vivo tissue detection and the combination of Multispectral Imaging and artificial intelligence.

Optimizing wastewater treatment through artificial intelligence: recent advances and future prospects

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being applied to wastewater treatment to enhance efficiency, improve processes, and optimize resource utilization. This review focuses on objectives, advantages, outputs, and major findings of various AI models in the three key aspects: the prediction of removal efficiency for both organic and inorganic pollutants, real-time monitoring of essential water quality parameters (such as pH, COD, BOD, turbidity, TDS, and conductivity), and fault detection in the processes and equipment integral to wastewater treatment. The prediction accuracy (R2 value) of AI technologies for pollutant removal has been reported to vary between 0.64 and 1.00. A critical aspect explored in this review is the cost-effectiveness of implementing AI systems in wastewater treatment. Numerous countries and municipalities are actively engaging in pilot projects and demonstrations to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of AI applications in wastewater treatment. Notably, the review highlights successful outcomes from these initiatives across diverse geographical contexts, showcasing the adaptability and positive impact of AI in revolutionizing wastewater treatment on a global scale. Further, insights on the ethical considerations and potential future directions for the use of AI in wastewater treatment plants have also been provided.

Robust polymer hybrid and assembly materials from structure tailoring to efficient catalytic remediation of emerging pollutants

A massive amount of toxic substances and harmful chemicals are released every day into the outer environment, imposing serious environmental impacts on both land and aquatic animals. To date, research is constantly in progress to determine the best catalytic material for the effective remediation of these harmful pollutants. Hybrid nanomaterials prepared by combining functional polymers with inorganic nanostructures got attention as a promising area of research owing to their remarkable multifunctional properties deriving from their entire nanocomposite structure. The versatility of the existing nanomaterials' design in polymer-inorganic hybrids, with respect to their structure, composition, and architecture, opens new prospects for catalytic applications in environmental remediation. This review article provides comprehensive detail on catalytic polymer nanocomposites and highlights how they might act as a catalyst in the remediation of toxic pollutants. Additionally, it provides a detailed clarification of the processing of design and synthetic ways for manufacturing polymer nanocomposites and explores further into the concepts of precise design methodologies. Polymer nanocomposites are used for treating pollutants (electrocatalytic, biocatalytic, catalytic, and redox degradation). The three catalytic techniques that are frequently used are thoroughly illustrated. Furthermore, significant improvements in the method through which the aforementioned catalytic process and pollutants are extensively discussed. The final section summarizes challenges in research and the potential of catalytic polymer nanocomposites for environmental remediation.

Effect and environmental behaviour of microplastics in soil

Soil microplastic pollution is currently a worldwide concern. Microplastics are organic pollutants that are abundant in the natural environment, are persistent and difficult to degrade and may endanger human health while harming the environment. This article offers a bibliometric analysis of the environmental behaviour of microplastics in soils, as well as a thorough statistical analysis of research goals and trends in this field. We conducted a thorough search of all relevant literature from 2012 to 2022 in the Web of Science core database. The data analysis shows that, starting in 2012, there has been an upward trend in the number of articles about soil microplastic pollution. It can also be seen that China is relatively ahead of the curve in this area of research, followed by the United Kingdom and the United States. This article also systematically describes the research hotspots in this field. The results show that the current research on soil microplastics is mainly focused on their identification, enrichment and toxicity, whereas studies on the migration and transformation of soil microplastics and the mechanism of interaction with other pollutants are still lacking. Our results provide ideas and prospects for future research in this field.

Emerging contaminants in water environments: progress, evolution, and prospects

This article employs bibliometric tools like VOSviewer, Bibliometrix, and CiteSpace for a comprehensive visual analysis of 1,612 documents on Emerging Contaminants in Waters from the Web of Science database. The objective is to elucidate the historical development, research hotspots, and trends in international studies of this field, offering valuable insights and guidance for future research directions. The analysis reveals a consistent increase in publications from 2003 to 2023, with the United States, China, and Spain being the most prolific contributors. A detailed examination of keyword co-occurrence and cluster analysis shows a predominant focus on themes such as pollutant detection, risk assessment, and biogeochemical cycling. Furthermore, the study underscores the significance of forming interdisciplinary networks among authors and institutions, highlighting its critical role in enhancing the quality and innovation of scientific research. The findings of this study not only chart the progression and focal points of research in this domain but also underscore the pivotal role of international collaboration, serving as an indispensable reference for shaping future research trajectories and fostering global cooperation.

Penicillium polonicum-mediated green synthesis of silver nanoparticles: Unveiling antimicrobial and seed germination advancements

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), widely recognized for their nanoscale geometric size and unique properties, such as large specific surface area, high permeability, and high safety, were synthesized using the endophytic fungus Penicillium polonicum PG21 through a green approach. Four key synthesis factors-48 h, 45 °C, pH 9.0, and 80 mM AgNPs concentration-were optimized. Characterization via ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction revealed the AgNPs as approximately 3-25 nm spherical particles with numerous functional groups ensuring stability. AgNPs were tested against various fungal and bacterial plant pathogens, including Botrytis cinerea (EB-1), Alternaria alternata (EB-2, EB-3), Fusarium solani (RG-1), Williamsia serinedens (SL-1), Sphingopyxis macrogoltabida (SL-2), Bacillus velezensis (SL-3), and Pseudomonas mediterranea (SL-4), causing agricultural challenges. PG21-synthesized AgNPs exhibited inhibition rates against all tested fungi, with 60 μg/mL AgNPs demonstrating optimal inhibition rates. Notably, EB-1 experienced a significant growth inhibition, reaching an inhibition rate reached of 74.22 ± 1.54%. Conversely, RG-1 exhibited the smallest inhibitory effect at 48.13 ± 0.92%. The effect of AgNPs on safflower seed germination and growth revealed notable increases in shoot length, fresh weight, stem length, and number of lateral roots-1.4, 1.4, 1.33, and 10.67 times higher than the control, respectively, at an AgNPs concentration of 80 μg/mL. In conclusion, green-synthesized AgNPs demonstrate pathogen toxicity, showcasing potential applications in disease management for industrial crops and promoting plant growth.

Three-dimensional porous La(OH)3/g-C3N4 adsorption-photocatalytic synergistic removal of tetracycline

La(OH)3/g-C3N4 composites were successfully synthesized via one-step calcination using urea, melamine, and La(NO3)3·nH2O as raw materials, and applied to UV-induced photocatalytic tetracycline (TC) removal. Comprehensive characterization by an X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared reflection (FT-IR), high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM), and other techniques analyzed effects of La3+ doping, especially N vacancies and cyano groups as active sites. Compared to pure g-C3N4 and La(OH)3, synthesized La(OH)3/g-C3N4 composites exhibited a three-dimensional porous nanosheet structure with specific surface area of 83.62 m2/g and equilibrium TC adsorption capacity up to 285.59 mg/g; La(OH)3 doping significantly improved composite structure. After dispersing 10 mg La-CN-0.5 photocatalyst in 60 mL 40 mg/L TC solution, TC removal reached 91.08% in 30 min under UV irradiation, exhibiting excellent performance. Additionally, La-CN-0.5 showed significant adsorption-photocatalytic synergism, with the quasi-primary kinetic constant increased by 1.83-fold. The efficiency of high tetracycline (TC) concentration treatment through adsorption photocatalytic degradation by La-CN-0.5 was confirmed by the utilization of free radical trapping and electron spin resonance (ESR) tests. The significant involvement of ∙O2-, ∙OH, and h+ in this process was observed. These findings propose that the prepared La-CN-0.5 material exhibits a unique capability for adsorption photocatalysis, providing a promising approach for the efficient removal of high TC concentrations.

A bibliometric analysis of emerging contaminants (ECs) (2001-2021): Evolution of hotspots and research trends

Emerging contaminants (ECs) have attracted increasing attention in the past two decades because of their ubiquitous existence and high environmental risk. Understanding the progress of research and the evolution of hot topics is critical. This study provides a bibliometric review, along with a quantitative trend analysis of approximately 8000 publication records dated from 2001 to 2021. Wider distribution in various subjects was discovered in terms of publication numbers, indicating a strong tendency for EC research to become an interdisciplinary topic. Visualization of term co-occurrence analysis revealed that the ECs study went through three stages over time: identification and detection, traceability and risk, and process and control. Quantitative trend analysis revealed that antibiotics, microplastics, endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), per/poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), pesticides, heavy metals, and nanoparticles are attracting increasing attention, whereas conventional pharmaceuticals, persistent organic pollutants, and materials such as benzotriazole, diclofenac, bisphenol A, carbamazepine, triclosan, and titanium dioxide exhibit a downward trend. PFAS and EDCs are considered potential future core hotspots for the hysteretic rise in research attention compared with conventional ECs. Furthermore, analysis of research linkage and the developing stages of ECs could be possible approach to determine the evolution of hotspots in ECs study. This study provides objective and comprehensive insights into the research landscape of ECs, which may shed light on future developmental directions for researchers interested in this field.

A comprehensive review on the application of semiconducting materials in the degradation of effluents and water splitting

In this comprehensive review article, we delve into the critical intersection of environmental science and materials science. The introduction sets the stage by emphasizing the global water shortage crisis and the dire consequences of untreated effluents on ecosystems and human health. As we progress into the second section, we embark on an intricate exploration of piezoelectric and photocatalytic principles, illuminating their significance in wastewater treatment and sustainable energy production. The heart of our review is dedicated to a detailed analysis of the detrimental impacts of effluents on human health, underscoring the urgency of effective treatment methods. Application of 2D MoS2 Nanoflower for the Removal of Emerging Pollutants from Water

Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial-MoS2 (molybdenum disulfide) has gained interest among researchers, owing to its exceptional mechanical, biological, and physiochemical properties. This paper reports on the removal of organic dyes and an emerging contaminant, Ciprofloxacin, by a 2D MoS2 nanoflower as an adsorbent. The material was prepared by a green hydrothermal technique, and its high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller-specific area of 185.541m2/g contributed to the removal of 96% rhodamine-B dye and 85% Ciprofloxacin. Various characterizations, such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy linked with energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, revealed the nanoflower structure with good crystallinity. The feasibility and efficacy of 2D MoS2 nanoflower as a promising adsorbent candidate for the removal of emerging pollutants was confirmed in-depth in batch investigations, such as the effects of adsorption time, MoS2 dosages, solution pH, and temperature. The adsorption mechanism was further investigated based on thermodynamic calculations, adsorption kinetics, and isotherm modeling. The results confirmed the exothermic nature of the enthalpy-driven adsorption as well as the fast kinetics and physisorption-controlled adsorption process. The recyclability potential of 2D MoS2 exceeds four regeneration recycles. MoS2 nanoflower has been shown to be an effective organic pollutant removal adsorbent in water treatment.

Improved remediation of amoxicillin-contaminated water by floating treatment wetlands intensified with biochar, nutrients, aeration, and antibiotic-degrading bacteria

Residual antibiotics have become emerging contaminants of concern for their adverse impact on the ecosystem. Additionally, their accumulation in the environment is increasing antibiotic resistance among pathogens. This study assessed the impact of intensification of biochar, nutrients, aeration, and bacteria (BNAB) on the remediation potential of floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) to treat amoxicillin (AMX)-contaminated water. The FTWs were developed with saplings of Vetiveria zizanioides and intensified with biochar (1.5%), nutrients (25 mgL-1 N, 25 mgL-1 P, 20 mg L1 K), aeration (7 mg L-1), and AMX-degrading bacteria. The results showed that all the amendments enhanced the AMX degradation, while the maximum reduction in COD (89%), BOD (88%), TOC (87%), and AMX (97%) was shown by the combined application of all the amendments. The combined application also enhanced plant growth and persistence of the inoculated bacteria in the water, roots, and shoots. This approach can be employed for the low-cost, environment-friendly treatment, and recycling of antibiotic-contaminated wastewater, where BNAB intensification can further improve the bioremediation efficiency of FTWs in the case of heavily polluted waters.

Water, Water Everywhere, but Every Drop Unique: Challenges in the Science to Understand the Role of Contaminants of Emerging Concern in the Management of Drinking Water Supplies

The protection and management of water resources continues to be challenged by multiple and ongoing factors such as shifts in demographic, social, economic, and public health requirements. Physical limitations placed on access to potable supplies include natural and human-caused factors such as aquifer depletion, aging infrastructure, saltwater intrusion, floods, and drought. These factors, although varying in magnitude, spatial extent, and timing, can exacerbate the potential for contaminants of concern (CECs) to be present in sources of drinking water, infrastructure, premise plumbing and associated tap water. This monograph examines how current and emerging scientific efforts and technologies increase our understanding of the range of CECs and drinking water issues facing current and future populations. It is not intended to be read in one sitting, but is instead a starting point for scientists wanting to learn more about the issues surrounding CECs. This text discusses the topical evolution CECs over time (Section 1), improvements in measuring chemical and microbial CECs, through both analysis of concentration and toxicity (Section 2) and modeling CEC exposure and fate (Section 3), forms of treatment effective at removing chemical and microbial CECs (Section 4), and potential for human health impacts from exposure to CECs (Section 5). The paper concludes with how changes to water quantity, both scarcity and surpluses, could affect water quality (Section 6). Taken together, these sections document the past 25 years of CEC research and the regulatory response to these contaminants, the current work to identify and monitor CECs and mitigate exposure, and the challenges facing the future.

Catalytic polymer nanocomposites for environmental remediation of wastewater

The removal of harmful chemicals and species from water, soil, and air is a major challenge in environmental remediation, and a wide range of materials have been studied in this regard. To identify the optimal material for particular applications, research is still ongoing. Polymer nanocomposites (PNCs), which combine the benefits of nanoparticles with polymers, an alternative to conventional materials, may open up new possibilities to overcome this difficulty. They have remarkable mechanical capabilities and compatibility due to their polymer matrix with a very high surface area to volume ratio brought about by their special physical and chemical properties, and the extremely reactive surfaces of the nanofillers. Composites also provide a viable answer to the separation and reuse problems that hinder nanoparticles in routine use. Understanding these PNCs materials in depth and using them in practical environmental applications is still in the early stages of development. The review article demonstrates a crisp introduction to the PNCs with their advantageous properties as a catalyst in environmental remediation. It also provides a comprehensive explanation of the design procedure and synthesis methods for fabricating PNCs and examines in depth the design methods, principles, and design techniques that guide proper design. Current developments in the use of polymer nanocomposites for the pollutant treatment using three commonly used catalytic processes (catalytic and redox degradation, electrocatalytic degradation, and biocatalytic degradation) are demonstrated in detail. Additionally, significant advances in research on the aforementioned catalytic process and the mechanism by which contaminants are degraded are also amply illustrated. Finally, there is a summary of the research challenges and future prospects of catalytic PNCs in environmental remediation.

Critical review on modified floating photocatalysts for emerging contaminants removal from landscape water: problems, methods and mechanism

Due to the disorderly discharge in modern production and daily life of people, emerging contaminants(ECs) began to appear in landscape water, and have become a key public concern. Because of the unique characteristics of landscape water, it is difficult to efficiently remove ECs either by natural purification or by traditional large-scale sewage treatment facilities. The ideal purification method is to remove them while maintaining a beautiful environment. Possessing the feature of low-density, floating photocatalysts could harvest sufficient light on the surface of the water for photocatalytic degradation, which may be an important supplement for ECs treatment in landscape water. This paper gave a review related to floating photocatalysts and proposed an idea of combining floating photocatalysts to construct bionic photocatalytic materials for contaminative landscape water treatment. Six types of common floating substrates and corresponding applications for floating photocatalysts were concluded in this paper, and the main problem leading to the low efficiency of photocatalysts and three corresponding three improvement strategies were discussed. Besides, the modification mechanisms of photocatalysts were discussed thoroughly. On this basis, the engineering application prospects of bionic photocatalytic materials were proposed to remove ECs in landscape water.

Sequestration of steroidal estrogen in aqueous samples using an adsorption mechanism: a systemic scientometric review

Steroidal estrogens (SEs) remain one of the notable endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) that pose a significant threat to the aquatic environment in this era owing to their interference with the normal metabolic functions of the human body systems. They are currently identified as emerging contaminants of water sources. The sources of SEs are either natural or synthetic active ingredients in oral contraceptive and hormonal replacement therapy drugs and enter the environment primarily from excretes in the form of active free conjugate radicals, resulting in numerous effects on organisms in aquatic habitats and humans. The removal of SEs from water sources is of great importance because of their potential adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems and human health. Adsorption techniques have gained considerable attention as effective methods for the removal of these contaminants. A systemic review and bibliometric analysis of the application of adsorption for sequestration were carried out. Metadata for publications on SE removal utilizing adsorbents were obtained from the Web of Science (WoS) from January 1, 1990, to November 5, 2022 (107 documents) and Scopus databases from January 1, 1949, to November 5, 2022 (77 documents). In total, 137 documents (134 research and 4 review articles) were used to systematically map bibliometric indicators, such as the number of articles, most prolific countries, most productive scholars, and most cited articles, confirming this to be a growing research area. The use of different adsorbents, include activated carbon graphene-based materials, single and multi-walled carbon nanotubes, biochar, zeolite, and nanocomposites. The adsorption mechanism and factors affecting the removal efficiency, such as pH, temperature, initial concentration, contact time and adsorbent properties, were investigated in this review. This review discusses the advantages and limitations of different adsorbents, including their adsorption capacities, regenerative potential, and cost-effectiveness. Recent advances and innovations in adsorption technology, such as functionalized materials and hybrid systems, have also been highlighted. Overall, the bibliographic analysis provides a comprehensive overview of the adsorption technique for the removal of SEs from other sources, serving as a valuable resource for researchers and policymakers involved in the development of efficient and sustainable strategies to mitigate the effects of these emerging contaminants.

Challenges and Solutions for Global Water Scarcity

Climate change, global population growth, and rising standards of living have put immense strain on natural resources, resulting in the unsecured availability of water as an existential resource. Access to high-quality drinking water is crucial for daily life, food production, industry, and nature. However, the demand for freshwater resources exceeds the available supply, making it essential to utilize all alternative water resources such as the desalination of brackish water, seawater, and wastewater. Reverse osmosis desalination is a highly efficient method to increase water supplies and make clean, affordable water accessible to millions of people. However, to ensure universal access to water, various measures need to be implemented, including centralized governance, educational campaigns, improvements in water catchment and harvesting technologies, infrastructure development, irrigation and agricultural practices, pollution control, investments in novel water technologies, and transboundary water cooperation. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of measures for utilizing alternative water sources, with particular emphasis on seawater desalination and wastewater reclamation techniques. In particular, membrane-based technologies are critically reviewed, with a focus on their energy consumption, costs, and environmental impacts.

Preparation and application of Ag plasmon Bi3O4Cl photocatalyst for removal of emerging contaminants under visible light

Photocatalytic degradation has been extensively investigated toward the removal emerging contaminants (ECs) from water. In this study, a series of Ag-Bi₃O₄Cl plasmon photocatalysts were synthesized through the photo-deposition of metallic Ag on the Bi₃O₄Cl surface. The effects of plasmon modification on the catalytic performance of bismuth oxychlorides were analyzed. Ag addition did not alter the morphology of Bi₃O₄Cl. With the increasing Ag content, the number of oxygen defects on the catalyst surface first increased and then decreased. Moreover, the surface plasmon resonance effect of Ag suppressed the recombination of electron-hole pairs, promoting the migration and separation of photocarriers and improving the light absorption efficiency. However, the addition of excessive Ag reduced the number of active sites on the Bi₃O₄Cl surface, hindering the catalytic degradation of pollutants. The optimal Ag-Bi₃O₄Cl photocatalyst (Ag ratio: 0.025; solution pH: 9; dosage: 0.8 g/L) achieved 93.8 and 94.9% removal of ciprofloxacin and tetrabromobisphenol A, respectively. The physicochemical and photoelectric properties of Ag-Bi₃O₄Cl were determined through various characterization techniques. This study demonstrates that introducing metallic Ag alters the electron transfer path of the catalyst, reduces the recombination rate of electron-hole pairs, and effectively improves the catalytic efficiency of Bi₃O₄Cl. Furthermore, the pathways of ciprofloxacin degradation products and their biotoxicity were revealed.

Piezoelectric materials and techniques for environmental pollution remediation

With the rapid development of industrialization and agriculture, a series of critical imminent environmental problems and water pollution have caught wide attention from the public and society. Piezoelectric catalysis technology with piezoelectric materials is a green and environmental method that can efficiently improve the separation of electron-hole pairs, then generating the active substances such as OH, H₂O₂ and O₂^-, which can degrade water pollutants. Therefore, we firstly surveyed the piezoelectric catalysis in piezoelectric materials and systematically concluded and emphasized the relationship between piezoelectric materials and the piezoelectric catalytic mechanism, the goal to elucidate the effect of polarization on piezoelectric catalytic performance and enhance piezoelectric catalytic performance. Subsequently, the applications of piezoelectric materials in water treatment and environmental pollutant remediation were discussed including degradation of organic pollutants, removal of heavy mental ions, radionuclides, bacteria disinfection and water splitting for H₂ generation. Finally, the development prospects and future outlooks of piezoelectric catalysis were presented in detail.

Toward Efficient Bactericidal and Dye Degradation Performance of Strontium- and Starch-Doped Fe2O3 Nanostructures: In Silico Molecular Docking Studies

In this study, various concentrations of strontium (Sr) into a fixed amount of starch (St) and Fe2O3 nanostructures (NSs) were synthesized with the co-precipitation approach to evaluate the antibacterial and photocatalytic properties of the concerned NSs. The study aimed to synthesize nanorods of Fe2O3 with co-precipitation to enhance the bactericidal behavior with dopant-dependent Fe2O3. Advanced techniques were utilized to investigate the structural characteristics, morphological properties, optical absorption and emission, and elemental composition properties of synthesized samples. Measurements via X-ray diffraction confirmed the rhombohedral structure for Fe2O3. Fourier-transform infrared analysis explored the vibrational and rotational modes of the O-H functional group and the C=C and Fe-O functional groups. The energy band gap of the synthesized samples was observed in the range of 2.78-3.15 eV, which indicates that the blue shift in the absorption spectra of Fe2O3 and Sr/St-Fe2O3 was identified with UV-vis spectroscopy. The emission spectra were obtained through photoluminescence spectroscopy, and the elements in the materials were determined using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy micrographs showed NSs that exhibit nanorods (NRs), and upon doping, agglomeration of NRs and nanoparticles was observed. Efficient degradations of methylene blue increased the photocatalytic activity in the implantation of Sr/St on Fe2O3 NRs. The antibacterial potential for Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was measured against ciprofloxacin. E. coli bacteria exhibit inhibition zones of 3.55 and 4.60 mm at low and high doses, respectively. S. aureus shows the measurement of inhibition zones for low and high doses of prepared samples at 0.47 and 2.40 mm, respectively. The prepared nanocatalyst showed remarkable antibacterial action against E. coli bacteria rather than S. aureus at high and low doses compared to ciprofloxacin. The best-docked conformation of the dihydrofolate reductase enzyme against E. coli for Sr/St-Fe2O3 showed H-bonding interactions with Ile-94, Tyr-100, Tyr-111, Trp-30, ASP-27, Thr-113, and Ala-6.

Current research trends on emerging contaminants pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs): A comprehensive review

Pharmaceutical and personnel care products (PPCPs) from wastewater are a potential hazard to the human health and wildlife, and their occurrence in wastewater has caught the concern of researchers recently. To deal with PPCPs, various treatment technologies have been evolved such as physical, biological, and chemical methods. Nevertheless, modern and efficient techniques such as advance oxidation processes (AOPs) demand expensive chemicals and energy, which ultimately leads to a high treatment cost. Therefore, integration of chemical techniques with biological processes has been recently suggested to decrease the expenses. Furthermore, combining ozonation with activated carbon (AC) can significantly enhance the removal efficiency. There are some other emerging technologies of lower operational cost like photo-Fenton method and solar radiation-based methods as well as constructed wetland, which are promising. However, feasibility and practicality in pilot-scale have not been estimated for most of these advanced treatment technologies. In this context, the present review work explores the treatment of emerging PPCPs in wastewater, via available conventional, non-conventional, and integrated technologies. Furthermore, this work focused on the state-of-art technologies via an extensive literature search, highlights the limitations and challenges of the prevailing commercial technologies. Finally, this work provides a brief discussion and offers future research directions on technologies needed for treatment of wastewater containing PPCPs, accompanied by techno-economic feasibility assessment.

Recent innovation and impacts of nano-based technologies for wastewater treatment on humans: a review

Sustainable wastewater management requires environment-friendly, efficient, and cost-effective methods of water treatment. The ever-growing list of emerging contaminants in municipal wastewater requires advanced, efficient, and cost-effective techniques for its treatment to combat the increasing water demand. The nano-based technologies hold great potential in improving water treatment efficiency and augmenting the water supply. However, the environmental effects of these technologies are still questionable among the public and scientific community. The present review discusses risks to human health due to the use of nano-based technology for the removal of emerging contaminants in water. The discussion will be about the impacts of these technologies on humans. Recommendations about safe and environmentally friendly options for nano-based technology for water treatment have been included. Safest options of nano-based technologies for water treatment and steps to minimize the risk associated with them have also been incorporated in this article. Since all biological systems are different, separate risk analyses should be performed at the environmentally relevant concentration for different durations. There is little/no information on the quantitative impact on humans and requires more understanding. The quantitative measurement of the cellular uptake of nanoparticles is usually difficult. We hope this article will serve its purpose for water researchers, medical researchers, environmentalists, policymakers, and the government.

The impact of Jürgen Habermas's scientific production: a scientometric review

The use of bibliometrics, based on statistical and mathematical tools, makes it possible to measure the contributions of researchers to science. This is a widely used tool to assess scientific production in several areas of knowledge. Such methodology analyzes publication trends, author networks, structures of co-citation, journals and even the scientific contribution of renowned scholars in science. The precursor of bibliometrics, Eugene Garfield, who proposes the retrieval of information from the indexing of citations, was the object of a scientometric review aimed at assessing his impact on science. Given such relevance, this article presents the academic contribution of Jürgen Habermas based on a preliminary scientometric review of his studies. Jürgen Habermas is regarded not only as an active scholar in the social and political process, but also as a productive, controversial and influential contemporary author. The correct understanding of his works is a great challenge, as the bases of his thinking are so broad that they allow an interface between different approaches. We elaborated a design of his scientific work with the advancement to a connection between his main ideas through the use of bibliometric software. Bibliometrics, of the scientometric type, allows the understanding of how recognized patterns in citations can develop information relevant to the scientific field. The results confirm the multidisciplinary contribution of Habermas's studies and highlight his main fields of research and works, which serve as a foundation for clearly understanding and applying his concepts.

Research on the remediation of cesium pollution by adsorption: Insights from bibliometric analysis

While nuclear energy with zero carbon emissions will continue to occupy an indispensable position in future scenarios for power generation, the proper disposal of nuclear waste is still highly challenging in many countries. Adsorption is currently one of the primary methods used for removal of cesium from wastewater. However, no available literature has systematically summarized advances and outlooks on the adsorptive removal of cesium, and research issues such as relevant adsorption mechanisms remain largely unexplored. In this study, a bibliometric analysis was used to quantitatively analyze 10141 publications in the Web of Science Core Collection that were published from 1900 to 2022. Current publication trends and active countries, most influential authors and institutions, journal distribution, and research hotspots and trends were reviewed and summarized. The results for the conceptual structure and evolution of investigations in this field showed three distinct periods of rapid development in recent decades. The first period concerned the scope, degree, and influences of pollution by cesium and the development of natural adsorbents. The second period included the exploration and verification of adsorption mechanisms, the fabrication and optimization of new materials, and the application of density functional theory for chemical calculations. The third period involved the development of more advanced biodegradable, nanoscale and synthetic materials with great potential for use as adsorbents as well as advances in engineering applications. Notably, the study showed that it is necessary to further enhance application-driven laboratory investigations. Future directions for research were proposed, such as the investigation of complex adsorption mechanisms, development of new materials, and engineering applications of materials developed in the laboratory. The findings will provide valuable insights and serve as a reference for researchers and policymakers as they address the adsorptive remediation of cases of pollution by cesium.

Strategies to improve membrane performance in wastewater treatment

Membrane technology has rapidly gained popularity in wastewater treatment due to its cost-effectiveness, environmentally friendly tools, and elevated productivity. Although membrane performance in wastewater treatment has been reviewed in several past studies, the key techniques for improving membrane performance, as well as their challenges, and solutions associated with the membrane process, were not sufficiently highlighted in those studies. Also, very few studies have addressed hybrid techniques to improve membrane performance. The present review aims to fill those gaps and achieve public health benefits through safe water processing. Despite its higher cost, membrane performance can result in a 36% reduction in flux degradation. The issue with fouling has been identified as one of the key challenges of membrane technology. Chemical cleaning is quite effective in removing accumulated foulant. Fouling mitigation techniques have also been shown to have a positive effect on membrane photobioreactors that handle wastewater effluent, resulting in a 50% and 60% reduction in fouling rates for backwash and nitrogen bubble scouring techniques. Membrane hybrid approaches such as hybrid forward-reverse osmosis show promise in removing high concentrations of phosphorus, ammonium, and salt from wastewater. The incorporation of the forward osmosis process can reject 99% of phosphorus and 97% of ammonium, and the reverse osmosis approach can achieve a 99% salt rejection rate. The control strategies for membrane fouling have not been successfully optimized yet and more research is needed to achieve a realistic, long-term direct membrane filtering operation.

Endocrine disrupting chemicals in the environment: Environmental sources, biological effects, remediation techniques, and perspective

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have been identified as emerging contaminants, which poses a great threat to human health and ecosystem. Pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, dioxins, brominated flame retardants, steroid hormones and alkylphenols are representative of this type of contaminant, which are closely related to daily life. Unfortunately, many wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) do not treat EDCs as targets in the normal treatment process, resulting in EDCs entering the environment. Few studies have systematically reviewed the related content of EDCs in terms of occurrence, harm and remediation. For this reason, in this article, the sources and exposure routes of common EDCs are systematically described. The existence of EDCs in the environment is mainly related to human activities (Wastewater discharges and industrial activities). The common hazards of these EDCs are clarified based on available toxicological data. At the same time, the mechanism and effect of some mainstream EDCs remediation technologies (such as adsorption, advanced oxidation, membrane bioreactor, constructed wetland, etc.) are separately mentioned. Moreover, our perspectives are provided for further research of EDCs.

Cuffless Blood Pressure Monitoring: Academic Insights and Perspectives Analysis

In recent decades, cuffless blood pressure monitoring technology has been a point of research in the field of health monitoring and public media. Based on the web of science database, this paper evaluated the publications in the field from 1990 to 2020 using bibliometric analysis, described the developments in recent years, and presented future research prospects in the field. Through the comparative analysis of keywords, citations, H-index, journals, research institutions, national authors and reviews, this paper identified research hotspots and future research trends in the field of cuffless blood pressure monitoring. From the results of the bibliometric analysis, innovative methods such as machine learning technologies related to pulse transmit time and pulse wave analysis have been widely applied in blood pressure monitoring. The 2091 articles related to cuffless blood pressure monitoring technology were published in 1131 journals. In the future, improving the accuracy of monitoring to meet the international medical blood pressure standards, and achieving portability and miniaturization will remain the development goals of cuffless blood pressure measurement technology. The application of flexible electronics and machine learning strategy in the field will be two major development directions to guide the practical applications of cuffless blood pressure monitoring technology.

Thermal crosslinking synthesis of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer supported floating TiO2 photocatalyst: characterization and photocatalytic performance

Floating photocatalyst is of extensive interest due to easy recovery and efficient light harvest. Support materials largely determine the stability of floating photocatalysts and their synthesis complexity. Thus, finding proper floating supports is very important. Herein, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) was investigated as a support to prepare floating TiO₂/EVA using a simple thermal crosslinking procedure. Multiple characterization analyses demonstrated that TiO₂ was anchored onto EVA surface evenly via hydrogen-bond-enhanced physical crosslinking and remained its virgin crystal structure. Photocatalytic experiments showed that the removal efficiency of Rhodamine B (RhB) by floating TiO₂/EVA increased by 33.8% as compared to suspended particle TiO₂. The h⁺ and ·O₂^- played dominant roles in TiO₂/EVA-driven RhB degradation. A 30-day stability test demonstrated that TiO₂/EVA had a high thermal, pH, and photo- stability. The three-run reuse test proved that TiO₂/EVA exhibited satisfactory reusability. This study provides a new option for floating photocatalyst synthesis.

Adsorptive and photocatalytic remediation of hazardous organic chemical pollutants in aqueous medium: A review

The provision of clean water is still a major challenge in developing parts of the world, as emphasized by the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 6), and has remained a subject of extensive research globally. Advancements in science and industry have resulted in a massive surge in the amount of industrial chemicals produced within the last few decades. Persistent and emerging organic pollutants are detected in aquatic environments, and conventional wastewater treatment plants have ineffectively handled these trace, bioaccumulative and toxic compounds. Therefore, we have conducted an extensive bibliometric analysis of different materials utilized to combat organic pollutants via adsorption and photocatalysis. The classes of pollutants, material synthesis, mechanisms of interaction, merits, and challenges were comprehensively discussed. The paper highlights the advantages of various materials used in the removal of hazardous pollutants from wastewater with activated carbon having the highest adsorption capacity. Dyes, pharmaceuticals, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, pesticides and other recalcitrant organic pollutants have been successfully removed at high degradation efficiencies through the photocatalytic process. The photocatalytic degradation and adsorption processes were compared by considering factors such as cost, efficiency, ease of application and reusability. This review will be good resource material for water treatment professionals/scientists, who may be interested in adsorptive and photocatalytic remediation of organic chemicals pollutants.

Wastewater treatment and emerging contaminants: Bibliometric analysis

In recent years, emerging contaminants have been found in the wastewater, surface water, and even drinking water, which should be treated to ensure the safety of our living environment. In this study, we provide a comprehensive summary of wastewater treatment and emerging contaminants research from 1998 to 2021 by using the bibliometric analysis. This study is conducted based on the Web of Science Core Collection Database. The bibliometix R-package, VOSviewer and CiteSpace software are used for bibliometric analysis and science mapping. A dataset of 10, 605 publications has been retrieved. The analysis results show that China has produced the most publications. China and the United States have the closest cooperation. Analysis of the most cited papers reveals that the purification or removal techniques such as ozonation or membrane filtration can effectively remove pharmaceutical compounds from the water environment. We also found that the efficient detection of emerging contaminants and the optimization of removal methods are current challenges. Finally, future research directions are discussed.

Determining global trends in syngas fermentation research through a bibliometric analysis

Syngas fermentation, in which microorganisms convert H₂, CO, and CO₂ to acids and alcohols, is a promising alternative for carbon cycling and valorization. The intellectual landscape of the topic was characterized through a bibliometric analysis using a search query (SQ) that included all relevant documents on syngas fermentation available through the Web of Science database up to December 31st, 2021. The SQ was validated with a preliminary analysis in bibliometrix and a review of titles and abstracts of all sources. Although syngas fermentation began in the early 1980s, it grew rapidly beginning in 2008, with 92.5% of total publications and 87.3% of total citations from 2008 to 2021. The field has been steadily moving from fundamentals towards applications, suggesting that the field is maturing scientifically. The greatest number of publications and citations are from the USA, and researchers in China, Germany, and Spain also are highly active. Although collaborations have increased in the past few years, author-cluster analysis shows specialized research domains with little collaboration between groups. Based on topic trends, the main challenges to be address are related to mass-transfer limitations, and researchers are starting to explore mixed cultures, genetic engineering, microbial chain elongation, and biorefineries.

Pharmaceutical compounds used in the COVID-19 pandemic: A review of their presence in water and treatment techniques for their elimination

During the COVID-19 pandemic, high consumption of antivirals, antibiotics, antiparasitics, antiprotozoals, and glucocorticoids used in the treatment of this virus has been reported. Conventional treatment systems fail to efficiently remove these contaminants from water, becoming an emerging concern from the environmental field. Therefore, the objective of the present work is to address the current state of the literature on the presence and removal processes of these drugs from water bodies. It was found that the concentration of most of the drugs used in the treatment of COVID-19 increased during the pandemic in water bodies. Before the pandemic, Azithromycin concentrations in surface waters were reported to be in the order of 4.3 ng L-1, and during the pandemic, they increased up to 935 ng L-1. Laboratory scale studies conclude that adsorption and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) can be effective in the removal of these drugs. Up to more than 80% removal of Azithromycin, Chloroquine, Ivermectin, and Dexamethasone in aqueous solutions have been reported using these processes. Pilot-scale tests achieved 100% removal of Azithromycin from hospital wastewater by adsorption with powdered activated carbon. At full scale, treatment plants supplemented with ozonation and artificial wetlands removed all Favipiravir and Azithromycin, respectively. It should be noted that hybrid technologies can improve removal rates, process kinetics, and treatment cost. Consequently, the development of new materials that can act synergistically in technically and economically sustainable treatments is required.

Occurrences and removal of pharmaceutical and personal care products from aquatic systems using advanced treatment- A review

Pharmaceuticals, personal care items, steroid hormones, and agrochemicals are among the synthetic and indigenous products that make up micropollutants, also known as emerging contaminants. Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPPs) are a class of developing micropollutants that can harm living organisms even at low concentrations. Many are detected in surface water and wastewater from the treatment process, with quantities ranging from ng L-1 to gL-1; however, residual PPPs at dangerously high levels have indeed recently been recognized in the ecosystem. Residential sewage treatment plant (STP) dump the largest majority of these pollutants into the environment on a regular basis. As a result of its robust structure, it has a longer lifespan in the environment. This review article discusses how surface water pollutants such pesticides, petroleum hydrocarbons, and perfluorinated compounds affect water quality, as well as the most cost-effective adsorbents for removing these PPPs. The goal of this study is to provide information about the origins of PPP, as well as diagnostic procedures and treatment options. Research on developing contaminants is also aimed at evaluating the efficacy and affordability of adsorption.

Removal of microcystins from water and primary treatment technologies - A comprehensive understanding based on bibliometric and content analysis, 1991-2020

Microcystins are a group of heptapeptide hepatotoxins produced by a variety of algae and are frequently detected in aquatic ecosystems, posing a global threat to ecological stability and human health. However, it is difficult to eliminate them completely and innocuously from water by conventional water treatment processes. This study comprehensively evaluated a total of 821 original articles retrieved from the Web of Science (1991-2020) about the removal of microcystins using bibliometric and content analysis to provide a qualitative and quantitative research landscape and a global view of research hotspots and future research directions. Furthermore, the primary and promising treatment technologies for microcystin pollution were also summarized and discussed. The results indicated an urgent practical demand to remediate microcystin pollution according to the increasing number of publications since 2005. China had the highest number of publications, whereas the United States was the core country in the international collaboration network. The Chinese Academy of Sciences and University of Cincinnati showed their leading positions considering article amounts and academic cooperation. Dionysiou DD contributed the most articles, and Carmichael WW had the highest number of co-citations. Three treatment technologies, including biodegradation, chemical oxidation and adsorption, were the major strategies to remediate the pollution of microcystins in water. In addition, the toxicity of toxins/their metabolites, degradation kinetics, and elimination mechanism were also important research contents. Bacterial degradation, photocatalytic degradation, and multiple-technologies approach have been identified with great potential and should be given more attention in future studies. This work summarizes the current research status on microcystin management, provides a valuable reference for researchers to identify potential opportunities for collaboration in related fields, and guides future research directions to inter-disciplinary and multi-perspective approaches.

Occurrence and fate of pharmaceuticals, personal care products (PPCPs) and pesticides in African water systems: A need for timely intervention

The occurrence of emerging contaminants (ECs) such as pharmaceuticals, personal care products (PPCPs) and pesticides in the aquatic environment has raised serious concerns about their adverse effects on aquatic species and humans. Because of their toxicity and bioactive nature, PPCPs and pesticides have more potential to impair water systems than any other contaminants, causing several adverse effects, including antibiotic resistance, reproductive impairment, biomagnification, bioaccumulation, etc. Over 35 publications from Africa have reported on the occurrence and fate of PPCPs and pesticides in African water systems with little or no data on remediation and control. As a result, adequate intervention strategies are needed for regulating the persistence of PPCPs and pesticides in African water systems.

Enhanced performance of photocatalytic treatment of Congo red wastewater by CNTs-Ag-modified TiO2 under visible light

In order to improve the treatment efficiency of printing and dyeing wastewater, the carbon nanotubes-silver-modified-titanium dioxide (CNTs-Ag-TiO₂, CAT) ternary composite was prepared by a mechanical mixing method. It was found that the morphology of the prepared CAT sample was uniformly coated with strips of CNTs, speckled Ag, and lumpy TiO₂. The (002) crystal plane of CNTs, the (101) crystal plane of TiO₂, and the (111) crystal plane of Ag were observed, which possessed functional groups such as Ti-OH and Ti-O-C, indicating that the prepared CAT sample had photocatalytic reaction sites. The visible light utilization of titanium dioxide can be improved. The treatment effect of different proportions of CNTs-Ag-TiO₂ on Congo red wastewater was tested, and the results showed that the optimum degradation effect of Congo red wastewater was CNTs: Ag = 10:1, and the doped amount of CNTs/Ag was 15%, and the removal rate of Congo red wastewater could reach 100% within 140 min. The excellent removal effect of CAT ternary composite on Congo red wastewater provided a new idea and way for the modification of TiO₂ and its composites for the potential of organic dyes degradation.

Is microplastic an oxidative stressor? Evidence from a meta-analysis on bivalves

Microplastic pollution is a major threat to the marine environment attracting attention from scientific and public communities. Although we have sufficient evidence that microplastic is ubiquitous in all ecosystems, the question of the harmfulness of microplastic exposure is still under debate. Filter feeders like bivalves are commonly exposed to microplastics in water and sediments and thus can serve as excellent biological indicators for microplastic pollution. A relatively rich toxicological literature has been focusing on microplastic effects on bivalves but we have yet to reach an agreement on the toxic effects and mechanisms of microplastics. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis and bibliometrics analysis of the microplastic studies in bivalves. The bibliometric analysis (used to evaluate the general research trends) showed that the investigation of microplastic distribution in the marine environment and the molecular mechanisms of microplastic toxicity are the two major hot spots of research. Based on analyses of ecologically and environmentally relevant microplastics concentrations, particle sizes and polymer types, we discuss the physiological effects of microplastics on bivalves, and the severity and direction of the effects at the cellular, tissue, organ and organismal levels. The meta-analysis results show that microplastics can induce time-dependent oxidative stress in bivalves. Generally, the activities of antioxidant enzymes, such as glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) increased during short-term exposure but declined after long-term exposure to microplastics. Non-linear response of GPx, GST and SOD enzymes to MP exposure over time indicate that these enzymes are not good biomarkers of MPs effects in marine bivalves. The tissue glutathione levels and catalase (CAT activity) showed an increase during both short- and long term MP exposures and thus can be used as oxidative stress biomarkers of sublethal MPs effects in marine bivalves.

Evaluation of photodegradation performance by paper microzones

Currently, the performance evaluation of catalysts usually requires expensive instruments. Hence, it is imperative to develop an alternative, green and sustainable method to investigate the photocatalytic reaction processes. Herein, the variation of degradation performance of different wastewaters with different dosage of P25 TiO₂ was evaluated to verify the reliability of the paper microzones method (PMZs). The optimum P25 TiO₂ dosage of 1 g/L for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) (UV light for 6 mins) and 0.5 g/L for the degradation of fuchsin basic (FB) (UV light for 5 mins) was obtained by the PMZs method. For the photocatalytic degradation of trivalent iron ion complexed salicylic acid (Fe(III)-SA) solution, the R² values of 0.904 and 0.801 were obtained for the photocatalytic reaction kinetics by PMZs and spectrophotometry, respectively, which again indicated the high reliability of PMZs. The accuracy of the results obtained by PMZs method relative to the spectrophotometric method ranged from 68.80% to 87.54% when degrading MB, FB, mixture of MB and FB, and Fe(III)-SA by P25 TiO₂. Therefore, the PMZs method is all in line with the requirements of low-carbon environmental protection and green chemistry, and has broad application prospects in the future.

Caffeine photocatalytic degradation using composites of NiO/TiO2-F and CuO/TiO2-F under UV irradiation

The interest in the removal of emerging contaminants has increased in the last decade. Photocatalytic degradation using p-n heterojunctions could effectively provide the degradation of these type of substances that are persistent in the environment. In this work, the synthesis, characterization, and photocatalytic evaluation of TiO₂-F as well as CuO/TiO₂-F and NiO/TiO₂-F composite materials were studied in the photo-assisted degradation of caffeine using UV radiation. The fluorination of titanium dioxide induced changes in some physicochemical properties of the materials, which contributed to a decrease in surface area and bandgap energy as well as an increase in crystallite size as compared to pristine TiO₂. ≡Ti-F species were evidenced to be formed, which could favor charge separation processes. A highest segregation of CuO species in comparison with NiO on the surface of TiO₂-F could be formed, which could increase defect sites and decrease the band gap. The formation of a heterojunction between the semiconductors was evidenced, responsible for the observed improvements in photocatalytic properties of the composite materials. The photocatalytic tests evidenced an important degradation of caffeine; however, mineralization was incomplete. The stability of the composite materials and their potential use in the photocatalytic treatment of caffeine was evaluated by reuse tests.

Emerging Pollutants in Moroccan Wastewater: Occurrence, Impact, and Removal Technologies

The rapid growth of anthropogenic activities in recent decades has resulted in the appearance of numerous new chemical compounds in the environment, known as “emerging pollutants” (EPs) or “contaminants of emerging concern” (CECs). Although partially or not yet regulated or monitored, there is growing research interest in these EPs among the scientific community because of their bioaccumulation, persistence, and adverse effects. Among these, endocrine disruptors, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals can have harmful impacts on human health and the ecosystem. Conventional wastewater treatment technologies are not effective in removing these contaminants, allowing them to be released into the receiving environment. In order to improve the understanding of emerging pollutants, this review discusses the source, occurrence, and impacts of bisphenol A, atrazine, amoxicillin, and paracetamol as model molecules of emerging environmental pollutants, an issue that remains underrepresented in Morocco. Then, treatment methods for EPs are reviewed, including adsorption, advanced oxidation processes, biodegradation, and hybrid treatment. It is proposed that adsorption and photocatalysis can be used as simple, effective, and environmentally friendly technologies for their removal. Thus, we summarize some of the adsorbent and photocatalyst materials applied in recent work to control these pollutants. Towards the end of this paper, the development of inexpensive and locally available (Morocco) materials to remove these compounds from wastewater is considered.

The mineralization ability of a chloride-resistant γ-Cu2(OH)3Cl Fenton catalyst: effects of the cation type, salt concentration and organic pollutants

A chloride-resistant heterogeneous Fenton catalyst γ-Cu2(OH)3Cl is used to mineralize aromatic organics (phenol, bisphenol A, salicylic acid and aniline) in saline solutions with different salts (MgCl2, CaCl2, NaCl and KCl) and concentrations.
