A Bibliometric Analysis on Research Progress of Earthworms in Soil Ecosystems

The earthworm, as a soil engineer, plays highly important roles in the soil ecosystem for shaping soil structure, promoting soil fertility, regulating microbial community composition and activities and decomposing soil pollutants. However, the research progresses on this important soil fauna have rarely been reviewed so far. Therefore, we conducted a bibliometric analysis of the literature published during 1900-2022, which was collected from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoS). The results showed that three periods (1900-1990, 1991-2005 and 2006-2022) could be identified in terms of the intensity of publications on the topic, and the number of publications kept increasing since 2006. The United States produced the highest publication record at the country scale, whereas Chinese Academy of Sciences was the most productive institution. Chinese institutions and authors played an active and prominent role during 2018-2022. Soil Biology & Biochemistry was the most popular journal for the topic-related research. In these publications, Professor Lavelle P was the most influential author. Based on a citation network of the top 50 cited papers, four hotspots were identified, i.e., the ecological effects of earthworms, the impact of agricultural activities on earthworms, earthworm ecotoxicology and earthworm invasion. Moreover, "impact", "biodiversity", "oxidative stress", "diversity", "response", "Eisenia fetida" and "exposure" were the emerging and active topics in recent years. This study can help us to better understand the relevant subject categories, journals, countries, institutions, authors and articles and identify the research hotspots and emerging trends in the field of soil earthworm research.

Artificial intelligence-based prediction model for the elemental occurrence form of tailings and mine wastes

With the advent of the second industrial revolution, mining and metallurgical processes generate large volumes of tailings and mine wastes (TMW), which worsens global environmental pollution. Studying the occurrence of metal and metalloid elements in TMW is an effective approach to evaluating pollution linked to TMW. However, traditional laboratory-based measurements are complicated and time-consuming; thus, an empirical method is urgently needed that can rapidly and accurately determine elemental occurrence forms. In this study, a model combining Bayesian optimization and random forest (RF) approaches was proposed to predict TMW occurrence forms. To build the RF model, a dataset of 2376 samples was obtained, with mineral composition, elemental properties, and total concentration composition used as inputs and the percentage of occurrence forms as the model output. The correlation coefficient (R), coefficient of determination, mean absolute error, root mean squared error, and root mean squared logarithmic error metrics were used for model evaluation. After Bayesian optimization, the optimal RF model achieved accurate predictive performance, with R values of 0.99 and 0.965 on the training and test sets, respectively. The feature significance was analyzed using feature importance and Shapley additive explanatory values, which revealed that the electronegativity and total concentration of the elements were the two features with the greatest influence on the model output. As the electronegativity of an element increases, its corresponding residual fraction content gradually decreases. This is because the solubility typically increases with the solvent's polarity and electronegativity. Overall, this study proposes an RF model based on the nature of TMW that can rapidly and accurately predict the percentage values of metal and metalloid element occurrence forms in TMW. This method can minimize testing time requirements and help to assess TMW pollution risks, as well as further promote safe TMW management and recycling.

Heavy metal migration dynamics and solid-liquid distribution strategy in abandoned tailing soils

The tailings soil originating from an abandoned sulfur-iron mine in Sichuan Province, China, exhibits elevated concentrations of heavy metals (HMs) and possesses limited soil conservation capacity. Variability soil particle size fractions (PSFs) contributes to an increased risk of HMs ion migration. Existing research on HMs behavior has focused on the bulk soil scale, resulting in a dearth of comprehensive information concerning different particle sizes and colloid scales. We collected soil samples from upstream source (XWA), migration path (XWB), and downstream farmland (XWC) of an abandoned tailing and categorized into sand, silt, clay, colloid and dissolved, respectively. The investigation primarily aimed to elucidate the solid-liquid distribution trade-off strategies of soil HMs along migration pathway. Results show that PSFs composition predominantly influences HMs solid-liquid distribution. In the mining area, large particles serve as the principal component for HMs enrichment. However, along the migration pathway, the proportion of highly mobile fine particles increases, shifting HMs from solid to liquid phase. Furthermore, inorganic elements such as Mg, Al, and Fe influence on HMs distribution within PSFs through various reactions, whereas organic matter and glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP) also exert regulatory roles. Increasing the proportion of large particles can reduce the risk of HMs migration.

Wide Riparian Zones Inhibited Trace Element Loss in Mining Wastelands by Reducing Surface Runoff and Trace Elements in Sediment

The diffusion of trace elements in mining wastelands has attracted widespread attention in recent years. Vegetation restoration is an effective measure for controlling the surface migration of trace elements. However, there is no field evidence of the effective riparian zone width in mining wastelands. Three widths (5 m, 7.5 m, and 10 m) of Rhododendron simsii/Lolium perenne L. riparian zones were constructed in lead-zinc mining wastelands to investigate the loss of soil, cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), arsenic (As), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn). Asbestos tiles were used to cut off connections between adjacent plots to avoid hydrological interference. Plastic pipes and containers were used to collect runoff water. Results showed that more than 90% of trace elements were lost in sediment during low coverage and heavy rainfall periods. Compared with the 5 m riparian zone, the total trace element loss was reduced by 69-85% during the whole observation period in the 10 m riparian zone and by 86-99% during heavy rain periods in the 10 m riparian zone, which was due to reduction in runoff and concentrations of sediment and trace elements in the 10 m riparian zone. Indirect negative effects of riparian zone width on trace element loss through runoff and sediment concentration were found. These results indicated that the wide riparian zone promoted water infiltration, filtered soil particles, and reduced soil erosion and trace element loss. Riparian zones can be used as environmental management measures after mining areas are closed to reduce the spread of environmental risks in mining wastelands, although the long-term effects remain to be determined.

Influence of environmental factors on changes in the speciation of Pb and Cr in sediments of Wuliangsuhai Lake, during the ice-covered period

Ecological pollution caused by heavy metals released from sediments is a worldwide concern. However, the effect of changes in sediment speciation on their release of heavy metals has not been adequately reported. In this study, the research focused on Pb and Cr in the ice period of Wuliangsuhai. This study analyzed changes in the sediment speciation of Pb and Cr before and after a release experiment using four risk assessment methods while varying the temperature, pH, and salinity of the water column. The results indicated that the total concentration of Pb ranged from 11.17 to 24.25 mg/kg, while for Cr it ranged from 42.26 to 69.68 mg/kg. Both elements exhibited mild contamination. The release of Pb and Cr from sediments increases with increasing water temperature, mainly due to the conversion of the residual fraction of Pb to the Fe-Mn oxide fraction and Cr converting more residual fraction to the organic matter and sulfide fraction. The release of sediment Pb and Cr decreased with increasing pH, with Pb converting more acid extractable fraction to the residual fraction and Cr converting more organic matter and sulfide fraction to the residual fraction. In contrast, the release of Pb and Cr increased and then decreased with increasing salinity. For Pb, the acid extractable fraction was more susceptible to conversion to the residual fraction by environmental influences, whereas for Cr, the organic matter and sulfide fraction were susceptible to conversion to the residual fraction.

Accelerated export and transportation of heavy metals in watersheds under high geological backgrounds

The geological background level of metals plays a major role in mineral distribution and watershed diffuse heavy metal (HM) pollution. In this study, field research and a distributed hydrological model were used to analyze the distribution, sources, and pollution risk of watershed HMs in sediments with high geological HM backgrounds. Study showed that the mineral distribution and landcover promoted the transport differences of watershed HMs from upstream to the estuary. And the main sources of Co, Ni, and V in the estuarine sediments were natural sources. Sources of Pb and Zn were dominated by anthropogenic sources, accounting for 76% and 64% of their respective totals. The overall ecological risk of anthropogenically sourced HMs was dominated by Pb (46.6%), while the contributions of Co and Ni were also relatively high, accounting for 35.70% and 33.40%. Moreover, redundancy analysis showed that HM variations in the sediments were most sensitive to soil erosion and mineralizing rock distribution. The spatial patterns of watershed HMs from natural sources were significantly influenced by P loading, precipitation, and forest distribution. This combination of experiments and model improves the understanding of watershed HM variation and provides a new perspective for formulating effective watershed HM management strategies.

Transport dynamics of watershed discharged diffuse phosphorus pollution load to the lake in middle of Yangtze River Basin

Diffuse pollution, including that in the lower and middle reaches of the Yangtze River, is the primary source of pollution in several agricultural watersheds globally. As the largest river basin in China, the Yangtze River Basin has suffered from total phosphorus (TP) pollution in the past decade owing to diffuse pollution and aquatic ecology destruction, especially in the midstream tributaries and mid-lower reaches of the lakes. However, the transport dynamics of diffuse pollutants, such as phosphorus (P) from land to water bodies have not been well evaluated, which is of great significance for quantifying nutrient loss and its impact on water bodies. In this study, diffuse pollution estimation with remote sensing (DPeRS) model coupled with Soil and Water Assessment Tools (SWAT) was utilized to simulate the transport dynamics of P, investigate the spatial heterogeneity and P sources in the Poyang Lake Basin. Additionally, the P transport mechanism from land to water and the migration process in water bodies were considered to investigate the impact of each loss unit on the water body and evaluate the load generated by diverse pollution types. The estimated diffuse TP loss was 6016 t P·yr-1, and the load to inflow rivers and to Poyang Lake were 11,619 and 9812 t P·yr-1, respectively. Gan River Basin (51.09%) contributed most TP to Poyang Lake among five inflow rivers, while waterfront area demonstrated the highest TP load per unit area with 0.057 t km-2·yr-1. Our study also identified P sources in the sub-basins and emphasized agricultural diffuse sources, especially planting, as the most significant factor contributing to TP pollution. Additionally, to improve the aquatic environment and water ecological conditions, further nutrient management should be applied using a comprehensive approach that encompasses the entire process, from source transportation to the water body.

Research focus and thematic trends of transient receptor potential vanilloid member 1 research: a bibliometric analysis of the global publications (1990-2023)

Recently, various studies have been devoted to the study of transient receptor potential vanilloid member 1 (TRPV1)-related diseases, potential drugs, and related mechanisms. The objective of this investigation was to examine the significant areas and cutting-edge developments in TRPV1 study within recent decades. Articles or reviews were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection. VOSviewer 1.6.18 and CiteSpace 6.1 R2 software were utilized to examine publication growth, distribution by country/region, institution, journal, authorship, references, and keywords. The software identified keywords with a high citation burstiness to determine emerging topics. From 1990 to 2023, the annual global publications increased by 62,000%, from 1 to 621. Journal of neuroscience published the most manuscripts and Nature produced the highest citations. The USA, Seoul National University and Di marzo V were the most productive and impactful institution, country, and author, respectively. "TRPV1," "Capsaicin receptor," "Activation," and "Pain" are the most important keywords. The burst keywords "TRPV1 channel," "Oxidative stress," "TRPV1 structure," and "Cancer" are supposed to be the research frontiers. The present study offers valuable insights into the understanding of TRPV1 and pain-related conditions. The research on TRPV1 has demonstrated a steady increase in studies related to pain-related diseases in the past few decades. The significance of TRPV1 in cancer pathogenesis and the resolution of its structure will emerge as a new academic trend in this field, providing direction for more widespread and comprehensive studies in the future.

Bioaccumulation of Titanium in diatom Cyclotella atomus Hust

Diatomaceous earth or diatomite is a fossil rock deposit of diatoms made up of silica and other minerals. A distinguishing feature of diatoms that placed them in the single class of microalgae Bacillariophyceae, is the frustule, a transparent, hard-shelled cell wall. It's interesting to note that the diatom has specific proteins and enzymes for heavy metal detoxification and can intake and store more heavy metals in its frustule. Consequently, an attempt has been made in this study to determine the bioaccumulation of metals in the frustules of the diatom. Hence, a centric diatom was isolated from the freshwater sample collected from the Adyar River, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The diameter of the cell was 5-7.5 µm and 20-23 striations with radial arrangement. A single, dark off-center fultoportula and marginal fultoportula on the striae are found in the diatom. Additionally, one rimoportula between two marginal fultoportula distributed on the striae between the costa was also seen. As a result, the isolated diatom was morphologically identified as Cyclotella atomus Hust. Simultaneously, the bioaccumulation study reveals that the Titanium (Ti) was found accumulated in the frustules of the diatom incubated in the Ti-supplemented culture medium based on the scanning electron microscope-energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDAX). Therefore, the biogenic accumulation and fabrication of Titanium frustules in diatom have advantages in enhancing the efficiency of solar cells.

Effects of light quality on microalgae cultivation: bibliometric analysis, mini-review, and regulation approaches

The ever-increasing concern for energy shortages and greenhouse effect has triggered the development of sustainable green technologies. Microalgae have received more attention due to the characteristics of biofuel production and CO2 fixation. From the perspective of autotrophic growth, the optimization of light quality has the potential to promote biomass production and bio-component accumulation in microalgae at low cost. In this study, bibliometric analysis was used to describe the basic features, identify the hotspots, and predict future trends of the research related to the light quality on microalgae cultivation. In addition, a mini-review referring to regulation methods of light quality was provided to optimize the framework of research. Results demonstrated that China has the greatest interest in this area. The destination of most research was to obtain biofuels and high-value-added products. Both blue and red lights were identified as the crucial spectrums for microalgae cultivation. However, sunlight is the most affordable light resource, which could not be fully utilized by microalgae through the photosynthetic process. Hence, some regulation approaches (e.g., dyes, plasmonic scattering, and carbon-based quantum dots) are proposed to increase the proportion of beneficial spectrum for enhancement of photosynthetic efficiency. In summary, this review introduces state-of-the-art research and provides theoretical guidance for light quality optimization in microalgae cultivation to obtain more benefits.

Growth retardation and suppression of ubiquitin-dependent catabolic processes in the brackish water clam Corbicula japonica in response to salinity changes and bioaccumulation of toxic heavy metals

The brackish water clam (Corbicula japonica) is constantly exposed to stressful salinity gradients and high levels of heavy metals in the freshwater-saltwater interface of estuary environments, which are introduced from upstream regions and land. To identify the key molecular pathways involved in the response to salinity changes and heavy metal bioaccumulation, we obtained the transcriptomes of C. japonica inhabiting different salinities and heavy metal distributions in Gwangyang Bay (Korea) using RNA sequencing. Among a total of 404,486 assembled unigenes, 5534 differentially expressed genes were identified in C. japonica inhabiting different conditions, 1549 of which were significantly upregulated and 1355 were significantly downregulated. Correlation analyses revealed distinct gene expression patterns between the low and high conditions of salinity and heavy metal bioaccumulation. Functional annotation revealed significant downregulation of genes involved in "ubiquitin-dependent protein catabolic process," "tricarboxylic acid cycle," and "intracellular protein transport" in C. japonica from the high condition compared to the low condition. Transcription and translation pathways were significantly enriched in the high condition. Additionally, upon comparison of the low and high conditions by qRT-PCR and proteasome enzyme activity analyses, our findings demonstrated that environmental stress could suppress the ubiquitin-proteasome complex (UPC). Additionally, transcriptomic changes under high salinity stress conditions may be related to an increase in cellular protection by defense enzymes, which leads to more energy being required and a disruption of energy homeostasis. Ultimately, this could cause growth retardation in the clam C. japonica. In summary, this study provides the first evidence of UPC suppression induced by a combination of high salinity and heavy metal bioaccumulation stress in C. japonica, which could compromise the survival and growth of estuarine bivalves.

Emerging trends in silicosis research: a scientometric review

Silicosis is a global disease whose prevention efforts cannot be ignored today. Although numerous silicosis-related data have been published recently, emphasizing the characteristics and nature of silicosis, a summary of the developmental laws of research is lacking, especially in the visual analysis of the literature. We aim to address this issue through a scientometric review. The Web of Science Core Collection and the All Databases were searched with "silicosis" as the topic, excluding unrelated publications, and obtained data from 9802 and 1613 publications, respectively. The data was then analyzed using the Web of Science's online scientometric analysis function and CiteSpace's visual analysis functionality, including publication volume analysis, co-occurrence analysis, co-citation analysis, cluster analysis, and explosive detection. The results identify the "respiratory system" as the most influential area over a century. Furthermore, the publication's number was correlated with the gross domestic product. We ranked countries and institutions based on the frequency of publications and discovered that Europe, the USA, and China are the leading regions for silicosis research, with the USA and Europe having a stronger influence. Many reports related to artificial stone and denim jean production have been studied through citation analysis, indicating new epidemic trends in silicosis. Besides, silicosis-related diseases and the pathogenesis of silicosis were the research hotspots of silicosis through co-occurrence keyword analysis and outbreak detection. Furthermore, related diseases include coal workers' pneumoconiosis and tuberculosis, while the mechanism of silicosis includes studies on inflammation and fibrosis, oxidative stress, alveolar macrophages, apoptosis, and pathways.

Navigating the landscape of global sustainable livelihood research: past insights and future trajectory

Sustainable livelihoods (SL) have emerged as a crucial area of focus in global environmental change research, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This field is rapidly gaining prominence in sustainability science and has become one of the primary research paradigms. In our study, we conducted scientometrics analysis using the ISI Web of Science core collection database to examine research patterns and frontier areas in SL research. We selected 6441 papers and 265,759 references related to SL published from 1991 to 2020. To achieve this, we employed advanced quantitative analysis tools such as CiteSpace and VOSviewer to quantitatively analyze and visualize the evolution of literature in the SL research field. Our overarching objectives were to understand historical research characteristics, identify the knowledge base, and determine future research trends. The results revealed an exponential increase in SL research documentation since 1991, with the Consortium of International Agricultural Research Center (CGIAR) contributing the highest volume of research documents and citations. Key journals in this field included World Development, Global Environmental Change, Ecological Economics, and Ecology and Society. Notably, Singh RK and Shackleton CM emerged as prolific authors in SL research. Through our analysis, we identified six primary clusters of research areas: livelihoods, conservation, food security, management, climate change, and ecosystem services. Additionally, we found that tags such as rural household, agricultural intensification, cultural intensification, and livelihoods vulnerability remained relevant and represented active research hotspots. By analyzing keyword score relevance, we identified frontier areas in SL research, including mass tourism, solar home systems, artisanal and small-scale mining, forest quality, marine-protected areas, agricultural sustainability, sustainable rangeland management, and indigenous knowledge. These findings provide valuable insights to stakeholders regarding the historical, current, and future trends in SL research, offering strategic opportunities to enhance the sustainability of livelihoods for farmers and rural communities in alignment with the SDGs.

Interpretation of the coupling mechanism of ecological security and urbanization based on a Computation-Verification-Coupling framework: Quantitative analysis of sustainable development

In recent decades, China's rapid urbanization has produced numerous economic benefits while simultaneously creating substantial risks to ecological security. China's 14th Five-Year Plan and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have recently explicitly called for the coordinated development of ecological security and urbanization. Given this context, it is important to explore the mechanism by which ecological security and urbanization are coupled and coordinated to promote sustainable development. In this study, an index of the relationship between ecological security and urbanization was established via high-resolution data, and a "Computation-Verification-Coupling" (CVC) framework was constructed. The accuracy of the ecological security index was verified using a linear regression model, and the coordination level between ecological security and urbanization was analyzed via a coupled coordination model (CCM). The results revealed a steady increase in the ecological security index from 2010 to 2020; the proportion of the area above the medium level increased from 63.1 % to 74.1 %. The urbanization index in core counties exhibited rapid growth, with level V urbanized areas expanding from 5.5 % to 9.9 %. The ecological security verification model produced a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.75685, indicating a satisfactory degree of predictive capability. From 2010-2020, the coupled coordination improved, with the high coordination area accounting for 48.8 % and the extreme discoordination area decreasing from 1.8 % to 1.0 %. Coordinated development exhibited a stable progression, characterized by a cyclical evolution from initial coupling to antagonistic coupling and finally to coordinated development. This framework can be used not only to investigate the relationship between ecological security and urbanization but also to provide a quantifiable measure of progress toward achieving the SDGs.

Spatial and temporal distribution of heavy metals pollution and risk indices in surface sediments of Gomal Zam Dam Basin, Pakistan

Sediments were considered a sink and potential source of heavy metals in the aquatic system. For this purpose, the present study examined surface sediments for spatial and temporal variation of heavy metals pollution and risk indices in the Gomal Zam Dam Basin (GZDB), Pakistan. Sediment samples (n = 20) were collected from the GZDB, i.e., Gomal Zam Dam, its inlets, and outlets in the winter and summer seasons of 2020, and examined for heavy metals such as zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), and cobalt (Co) concentrations. Among GZDB, results showed that the Zhob River Inlet had a higher levels of heavy metals in both seasons. The results revealed that pollution load index values were < 1, observing no pollution in the aquatic system. The risk indices values revealed that sampling sites showed no or very low risk during the summer, 84% of samples showed no or very low risk during the winter, and the rest noted with reasonable risks. Winter season showed higher average values of contamination and risk indices than summer. Statistical analyses revealed that the heavy metals contaminations were mainly due to geogenic sources of rock weathering and ore deposits, with minor contributions from anthropic activities. This study recommends regular monitoring of temporal studies on heavy metals contamination in the water of the GZDB.

Evaluation of the Phytoremediation Potential of the Sinapis alba Plant Using Extractable Metal Concentrations

Testing the feasibility of soil phytoremediation requires the development of models applicable on a large scale. Phytoremediation mechanisms include advanced rhizosphere biodegradation, phytoaccumulation, phytodegradation, and phytostabilization. The aim of this study was to evaluate the phytoremediation potential of the Sinapis alba. Identification of the factors influencing the extraction process of metals from contaminated soils in a laboratory system suitable for evaluating the phytoavailability of these metals in three solutions (M1-CaCl2, M2-DTPA, and M3-EDTA) included the following: distribution of metals in solution (Kd), soil properties and mobile fractions (SOC, CEC, pH), response surface methodology (RSM), and principal component analysis (PCA). The evaluation of the phytoremediation potential of the Sinapis alba plant was assessed using bioaccumulation coefficients (BACs). The accumulation of heavy metals in plants corresponds to the concentrations and soluble fractions of metals in the soil. Understanding the extractable metal fractions and the availability of metals in the soil is important for soil management. Extractable soluble fractions may be more advantageous in total metal content as a predictor of bioconcentrations of metals in plants. In this study, the amount of metal available in the most suitable extractors was used to predict the absorption of metals in the Sinapis alba plant. Multiple regression prediction models have been developed for estimating the amounts of As and Cd in plant organs. The performance of the predictive models generated based on the experimental data was evaluated by the adjusted coefficient of determination (aR2), model efficiency (RMSE), Durbin-Watson (DW) test, and Shapiro-Wilk (SW) test. The accumulation of the analyzed metals followed the pattern Root > Pods > Leaves > Seeds, stems > Flowers for As and Leaves > Root > Stem > Pods > Seeds > Flowers for Cd in soil contaminated with different metal concentrations. The obtained results showed a phytoremediation potential of the Sinapis alba plant.

Modeling transport and fate of heavy metals at the watershed scale: State-of-the-art and future directions

A predictive understanding of the source-specific (e.g., point and diffuse sources) land-to-river heavy metal (HM) loads and HM dynamics in rivers is essential for mitigating river pollution and developing effective river basin management strategies. Developing such strategies requires adequate monitoring and comprehensive models based on a solid scientific understanding of the watershed system. However, a comprehensive review of existing studies on the watershed-scale HM fate and transport modeling is lacking. In this review, we synthesize the recent developments in the current generation of watershed-scale HM models, which cover a wide range of functionalities, capabilities, and spatial and temporal scales (resolutions). Existing models, constructed at various levels of complexity, have their strengths and weaknesses in supporting diverse intended uses. Additionally, current challenges in the application of watershed HM modeling are covered, including the representation of in-stream processes, organic matter/carbon dynamics and mitigation practices, the issues of model calibration and uncertainty analysis, and the balance between model complexity and available data. Finally, we outline future research requirements regarding modeling, strategic monitoring, and their combined use to enhance model capabilities. In particular, we envisage a flexible framework for future watershed-scale HM models with varying degrees of complexity to accommodate the available data and specific applications.

Bibliometric analysis of global research on bioretention from 2007 to 2021

Bioretention is a typical low impact development (LID) practice that helps reduce peak urban stormwater runoff and runoff pollutant concentrations (e.g., heavy metals, suspended solids, organic pollutants), which has become an important part of urban stormwater management over the past 15 years. To understand the research hotspots and frontiers in the field of bioretention facility research and provide a reference for research into bioretention facilities, we conduct a statistical analysis of global bioretention literature published during 2007-2021 using the Web of Science core database and the data visualization and analysis software VOSviewer and HistCite. The number of published articles related to bioretention facilities shows a rising trend over the study period, with research from China contributing greatly to global research on bioretention facilities. However, the influence of articles needs to be increased. Recent studies mainly focus on the hydrologic effect and water purification effect of bioretention facilities and on the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients from runoff rainwater. Further studies should focus on the interaction of fillers, microorganisms, and plants in bioretention facilities and its impact on the migration, transformation, and concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus; the purification effect and mechanism of specific emerging contaminants in runoff; the selection and configuration optimization of filler materials and plant species; and the optimization of the design parameters of the model for bioretention systems.

Tire wear particles: Trends from bibliometric analysis, environmental distribution with meta-analysis, and implications

Tire wear particles (TWPs), as one of pristine microplastics and non-exhaust emission pollutants, have received extensive attention from scholars worldwide in recent years. In the context of the increasing number of related research results, this study evaluated the current status of TWPs research based on bibliometric analysis and meta-analysis and then discussed in-depth the environmental implications involving transport, transformation of released additives in potential and combined pollution with other microplastics in TWPs researches. Results showed that the regional layout of TWPs research was mainly concentrated in Europe and North America, but with specific countries of the United States, Germany, China, the United Kingdom, and Sweden. Thus, Asia and Africa should timely carry out related research on TWPs considering their large vehicle ownerships. In addition, keyword co-occurrence analysis based on CiteSpace showed that biotoxicity, environmental distribution and human health risks are the current research hotspots. Furthermore, the content of TWPs varied greatly by country and environmental media according to the meta-analysis. It is warranted to be urgently investigated on the distribution, quantitative analysis, migration, additives transformation with toxic effects and control measures of TWPs under the influence of various complex factors such as energy innovation and smart driving. The obtained findings can help understand the developing status of TWPs and then promoting their related investigations in future.

Assessment of Carcinogenic and Non-carcinogenic Risk of Exposure to Metals via Consumption of Coffee, Tea, and Herbal Tea in Iranians

In the current study, we assessed health risk posed to Iranian consumers through exposure to metals via oral consumption of coffee, tea, and herbal tea of various trademarks collected from Iran market. Level of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Ni, and Pb in 243 samples was quantified by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The metal levels in coffee samples from different trademarks of a specific country had statistically similar levels of metals; however, metal levels differed significantly among brand names form different countries. Metal levels in tea samples differed significantly between domestic and imported products, while different trademarks of similar countries did not show significant variations in this respect. Metal level in herbal tea samples did not show significant variations among different trademarks. Nevertheless, it should be highlighted that mean concentrations of metals statistically differed among different herbal tea samples. Deterministic hazard quotients (HQs) were <1.0 for all non-carcinogenic metals and total hazard index (HI) values indicated no risk; however, probabilistic assessment calculated HI values >1. In both deterministic and probabilistic scenarios, carcinogenic metals As and Ni had an estimated incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) of medium level while that of Pb indicated no cancer risk. Sensitivity analysis showed that the concentration of metals had the most significant effect on non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks.

Recent advancements in cadmium-microbe interactive relations and their application for environmental remediation: a mechanistic overview

The toxic and persistent nature of cadmium (Cd) in the environment has become a matter of concern with its drastic increase in the concentrations over past few decades. Among the various techniques, the microbial remediation has been accepted as an effective decontamination tool for environmental applications, which is sustainable over a period of time. The Cd decontamination potential of the microbes depends on various internal and external factors that play a crucial role in selection of the microbes for application in a particular environment. Thus, it is important to understand the role of these factors for optimal application of the microbes. This study provides an insight into the mechanisms involved between the microbes and the environmental Cd. The study also briefly reviews the mathematical models that have been used to predict the remediation potential of the microbes and the kinetics involved during the process. A critical analysis of the recent advancements in the techniques for use of bacteria, fungi, and algal cells to remove Cd has been also presented in the manuscript.

A quantitative approach on environment-food nexus: integrated modeling and indices for cumulative impact assessment of farm management practices

Background

Best management practices (BMPs) are promising solutions that can partially control pollution discharged from farmlands. These strategies, like fertilizer reduction and using filter strips, mainly control nutrient (N and P) pollution loads in basins. However, they have secondary impacts on nutrition production and ecosystem. This study develops a method to evaluate the cumulative environmental impacts of BMPs. It also introduces and calculates food's environmental footprint (FEF) for accounting the total environmental damages per nutrition production.

Methods

This study combines the soil and water assessment tool (SWAT) for basin simulation with the indices of ReCiPe, a life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) method. By these means, the effectiveness of BMPs on pollution loads, production yields, and water footprints (WFs) are evaluated and converted as equivalent environmental damages. This method was verified in Zrebar Lake, western Iran. Here, water consumption, as WFs, and eutrophication are the main indices that are converted into equivalent health and ecological impairments. Two methods, entropy and environmental performance index (EPI), are used for weighting normalized endpoints in last step.

Results

Results showed that using 25-50% less fertilizer and water for irrigation combined with vegetated filter strips reduce N and P pollution about 34-60% and 8-21%, respectively. These can decrease ecosystem damages by 5-9% and health risks by 7-14%. Here, freshwater eutrophication is a more critical damage in ecosystem. However, using less fertilizer adversely reduces total nutrition production by 1.7-3.7%. It means that BMPs can decline total ecological damages and health risks, which threatens nutrition production. FEF presents a tool to solve this dilemma about the sustainability of BMPs. In the study area, a 4-9% decrease in FEF means that BMPs are more environmental friendly than nutrition menacing. Finally, this study concludes that SWAT-ReCiPe with FEF provides a quantitative framework for environment-food nexus assessment. However, due to the uncertainties, this method is recommended as a tool for comparing management strategies instead of reporting certain values.

Insight into advanced oxidation processes for the degradation of fluoroquinolone antibiotics: Removal, mechanism, and influencing factors

The enrichment and transport of antibiotics in the environments pose many potential hazards to aquatic animals and humans, which has become one of the public health challenges worldwide. As a widely used class of antibiotics, fluoroquinolones (FQs) generally accumulated in the environments as traditional sewage treatment plants cannot completely remove them. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been shown to be a promising method for the abatement of antibiotic contamination. In this review, influencing factors and relevant mechanisms of FQs removal by various AOPs were summarized. Compared with other AOPs, photocatalytic ozone may be considered as a cost-effective method for degrading FQs. Finally, the benefits and application restrictions of AOPs were discussed, along with proposed research directions to provide new insights into the control of FQs pollutant via AOPs in practical applications.

Mapping Research Trends from 20 Years of Publications in Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation

This study aims to create an all-around insight into the evolutions, status, and global trends of rhythmic auditory stimulation (RAS) research via enhanced bibliometric methods for the 2001-2020 time period. Articles concerning RAS were extracted from the Web of Science database. CiteSpace, Bibliometrix, VOSviewer, and Graphpad Prism were employed to analyze publication patterns and research trends. A total of 586 publications related to RAS between 2001 and 2020 were retrieved from the Web of Science database. The researcher Goswami U. made the greatest contribution to this field. The University of Toronto was the institution that published the most articles. Motor dysfunction, sensory perception, and cognition are the three major domains of RAS research. Neural tracking, working memory, and neural basis may be the latest research frontiers. This study reveals the publication patterns and topic trends of RAS based on the records published between 2001 and 2020. The insights obtained provided useful references for the future research and applications of RAS.

Elemental Profiling of North-East Indian Tea (Camellia sinensis) by ICP-MS and Assessment of Associated Health Risk

Tea is a perennial crop that requires acidic soil for better plant growth. Due to the acidic nature of tea-growing soil, metals can be easily absorbed by tea plants from growing medium. Other anthropogenic activities are also the major contributor of element in the tea. This study provided a comprehensive database of 24 elements which were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Selected 24 elements belong to alkali metal (Li, Rb, Cs), alkaline earth metal (Be, Sr, Ba), transition metal (V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ag, Cd, Hg), basic metal (Al, Ga, Sn, Tl, Pb), metalloid (As), non-metal (Se), and actinide (U). Total 321 drier mouth samples were collected during 2020-2021 from eight different regions (Darjeeling, Terai, Dooars, North Bank, Upper Assam, South Bank, Cachar, and Tripura) of north-east India. No inorganic mercury as well as uranium was detected in any tested tea samples. Mean concentrations of Be, As, Ga, Tl, Li, Se, Cd, Ag, Cs, V, Co, and Pb were at trace level, whereas macro-element mean concentrations were distributed in the manner of Al > Mn > Rb > Ba > Zn > Cu > Sr > Cr > Ni > Sn. Human health risk for non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic metals was also assessed for the studied elements. Hazard quotients (HQs) and hazard index (HI) values (< 1) for non-carcinogenic elements indicated no risk. The incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) values for carcinogenic elements indicated no risk for As, Cd, and Pb and medium level risk for Ni. Study concluded that north-east Indian tea would not pose any health hazard.

Perfluoroalkyl substance pollution: detecting and visualizing emerging trends based on CiteSpace

In recent years, perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have been detected in all kinds of environmental media and can harm animals and human beings. They have attracted the attention of environmental workers worldwide and have become another research hotspot in the field of environment. However, analyses of PFASs have seldom been studied systematically. Therefore, this study summarizes the available data in 6756 publications (2000-2022) using the CiteSpace software to provide insights into the specific characteristics of PFASs and consequently shows global development trends that scientists can use for establishing future research directions. As opposed to traditional review articles by experts, this study provides a new method for quantitatively visualizing information about the development of this field over the past 23 years. Results show that the countries with more research in this field are mainly the USA and China. The research on PFASs is mainly concentrated in environmental sciences and ecology. Zhanyun Wang and Robert C. Buck's research has the highest influence rate in this field, and their research group is worthy of attention. Through the analysis of hot keywords, we conclude that the research hotspots are mainly focused on PFASs' transmission media and pathways, human exposure and the mechanism of toxicity, and degradation and remediation measures. Collectively these results indicate the major themes of PFAS research are as follows: (1) transmission media and pathways, (2) human exposure and the mechanism of toxicity, (3) degradation and remediation measures. This study maps the major research domains of PFAS research; explanations and implications of the findings are discussed; and emerging trends highlighted.

Effects of biochar application on the loss characteristics of Cd from acidic soil under simulated rainfall conditions

Biochar is widely used for immobilizing heavy metals in soil as a kind of high-effective passivator. This research conducted incubation and simulated rainfall experiments to study the effects of biochar application on the loss characteristics of runoff and sediment, as well as the transportation of the Cd during the water erosion process. Two rainfall intensities (60 and 120 mm h^-1) and five biochar application rates (0%, 1%, 3%, 5%, and 7%) were considered in the experiment. The result showed that slaking had a greater effect than mechanical stirring in aggregate breakdown of the soil, and the addition of biochar generally increased the sensitivity of the soil to wet stirring, while had no obvious influence on the resistance to slaking. The H₂O and CaCl₂ extractable Cd in soil significantly decreased with the increase of biochar application rate. The runoff yields decreased with the increase of biochar application rate at both the two rainfall intensities, while the eroded sediment generally decreased at the 120 mm h^-1 rainfall intensity. The addition of biochar tended to increase the loss of the middle-sized (1-0.05 mm) aggregates at the 60 mm h^-1 rainfall intensity, whereas reduced their loss at the 120 mm h^-1 rainfall intensity. Biochar application could significantly reduce the concentration of Cd in the runoff and decreased the total loss amount of Cd (sediment+runoff) in most of the cases. Excessively high level (7%) of biochar application may aggravate soil erosion and result in more Cd loss.

Optimizing the spatial pattern of land use in a prominent grain-producing area: A sustainable development perspective

Spatial patterns are essential for examining the sustainability derived from land systems. Constructing spatial patterns for sustainable land development is now high on the global agenda to guarantee human welfare. However, there is as yet no consensus on the comprehensive framework for optimizing the spatial pattern of land development (SPLD) contrapose a prominent grain-producing area (PGPA). To narrow this gap, we propose a synthetic framework to shape a more reasonable SPLD for a sustainable development strategy by measuring the equilibrium between the production-living-ecological space (PLES) functions and the resource and environment carrying capacity (RECC). Taking a prominent grain-producing area (PGPA) as the object, a case study involving the Jianghan Plain (JHP) in China is conducted, leading to the following novel insights. (i) The quality of PLES and RECC in a PGPA is affected by multiple dimensions: agriculture, ecology, environment, and society. The indices of the PLES function and the RECC have significant spatial heterogeneity. SPLD in regions with fragile ecological environments and strong development is often under overload pressure. (ii) Based on the spatial zoning results of SPLD, the five partitions were taken as the optimized objects, including zones of the eco-economic, model-agricultural, core-living, eco-conservation, and coordinated-development. The land function definition of these five types of zoning covers the production-living-ecological function orientation in a PGPA. (iii) The SPLD optimization framework proposed above has strong universality because it comprehensively considers the multi-dimensional spatial functional needs of PGPA. In this study, an optimization decision framework of SPLD based on measurement and zoning was established for a PGPA. Significantly, the introduced framework is applicable and practical for optimizing SPLD from a sustainable equilibrium perspective, and the findings have considerable implications for sustainable development in prominent grain-producing areas.

Heavy Metal Pollution in Aquaculture: Sources, Impacts and Mitigation Techniques

Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing agro-industries as it presently accounts for nearly 50% of all fish for direct human consumption and 43% of total seafood supply. Fish provide about 20% average daily intake of animal protein for about 3.2 billion people globally. The treatment of aquaculture in recent years for the mitigation of heavy metals and other contaminants has been gaining traction due to the benefits of aquaculture to both man and the environment. This paper provides a review of the sources, impacts, and the various methods that have been deployed in recent years by various researchers for the treatment of heavy metal contaminated aquaculture. Related works of literature were obtained and compiled from academic search databases and were carefully analysed in this study. The dangers these metals pose to the sustainability of aquaculture were studied in this review. Studies indicate that some heavy metals, such as mercury, lead, and cadmium, due to their long-term persistence in the environment, allow them to accumulate in the food chain. Mitigation techniques such as adsorption, bio-sorption, and phytoremediation have been deployed for the treatment of heavy metal contaminated aquaculture. Some research gaps were also highlighted which could form the basis for future research, such as research centred on the effects of these metals on the embryonic development of aquaculture organisms and the alterations the metals caused in their stages of development.

Agriculture management and seasonal impact on soil properties, water, sediment and chemicals transport in a hazelnut orchard (Croatia)

Soil and water conservation practices are key to agroecosystems sustainability and avoiding diffuse pollution. Here, we compare the impacts of different types of mulch, barley straw (Straw), wooden chips (Chip) and tillage (Till) on vegetation mulch cover (VMC); soil properties, bulk density (BD), mean weight diameter (MWD), water stable aggregates (WSA), soil water content (SWC), soil organic matter (SOM), pH and total phosphorous (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn) and lead (Pb). We also assessed the ponding time (PT), runoff time (RT), runoff, sediment concentration (SC), sediment loss (SL) and chemicals transport (the same studied in soil). A set of rainfall simulation experiments (90 in total) was applied in the different Spring, Summer, and Fall treatments. The results showed that mulch increased VMC in all the seasons, while other properties (BD; MWD, WSA SOM, pH) were not affected, especially in Spring. The biggest impact was observed in Fall, especially in the Till plot, due to the tillage practices applied in Summer. Mulch increased PT, RT and reduced runoff, SL and chemicals transport. Chemical losses were very much associated with SL, and the concentration of P and metals in soil depended on soil Ca and pH. SWC, MWD and runoff were inversely related to PT, RT and SC. Finally, BD, VMC and SOM were highly associated. Overall, tillage practices dramatically impact SL, and diffuse pollution and urgent measures are needed to reverse this. Mulching is excellent and cost-effective to mitigate the impacts of agriculture on land degradation and diffuse pollution.

Anthropogenic metal loads in nearshore sediment along the coast of China mainland interacting with provincial socioeconomics in the period 1980-2020

Metal pollutions have been accused of consequences of the anthropogenic activities but few quantitative delineations between environmental metal loads and socioeconomic development presented. A meta-data analysis study was carried out on metal loads in coastal sediment in the provinces of China mainland reported in literature in the period 1980-2020. Eight metals with well-recognized anthropogenic sources were selected including arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), mercury (Hg), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn). Screened with three criteria, a total of 1173 records from 405 published studies were finalized as the metal loads dataset in coastal sediment. Evident provincial patterns were observed among the selected metals but element dependent after transformed to sample number weighted contents (C_w). Against the regional marine backgrounds, anthropogenic increment rate (R_anthrop) of metal loads in nearshore sediment presented better provincial differentiation with the extremes at 7.58 for As and 62.13 for Cu in Guangdong, 91.25 for Hg in Zhejiang, 3.19 for Ni in Tianjin, 7.72 for Pb in Fujian, and 13.51 for Zn in Liaoning. Metal loads in coastal sediment could be explained by characteristic industries in the provinces. Nearshore sediment in Guangdong had high risk to metal loads and other provinces at low-to-medium risk to the lowest thresholds of sediment quality guidelines in China and USA. Canonical correlations identified considerably interactive explanations between integrative hazard quotients (ƩHQ) of the selected metals in nearshore sediment and non-agricultural GDP per capita of non-agricultural population/urban population percentile provincially but few significant fittings by the classic environmental Kuznets Curve model quantitatively. Findings of this study explored uncertainty from both sides in explaining the interactions, i.e., data integrity of metal loads in coastal sediment in literature and appropriation of socioeconomic indicators in relation to metal emission industries.

Carbon Footprint Research Based on Input-Output Model-A Global Scientometric Visualization Analysis

Reducing the effect of mankind's activities on the climate and improving adaptability to global warming have become urgent matters. The carbon footprint (CF), derived from the concept of ecological footprint, has been used to assess the threat of climate change in recent years. As a "top to bottom" method, input-output analysis (IOA) has become a universally applicable CF assessment tool for tracing the carbon footprint embodied in economic activities. A wide range of CF studies from the perspective of the IOA model have been presented and have made great progress. It is crucial to have a better understanding of what the relevant research focuses on in this field, yet so far a systematic synopsis of the literature is missing. The purpose of this paper is to explore the knowledge structure and frontier trends in respect of the IOA model applied to CF research using scientometric visualization analysis. The main findings of this paper are as follows. (1) Published articles show a two-stage increase in the period 2008 to 2021, and present a complex academic network of countries, authors, and institutions in this important domain. (2) The classic studies are mainly divided into three categories: literature reviews, database application introduction, and CF accounting in different scales. (3) The research hotspots and trends show that the research scales tend to be more microscopic and applications of models tend to be more detailed. In addition, supply-chain analysis and driver-factor analysis will probably become the main research directions in the future.

Bacterial bioinoculants adapted for sustainable plant health and soil fertility enhancement in Namibia

The increase in dryland agriculture elicits the need to develop sustainable practices that improve crop yield and protect soil fertility. The use of biofertilisers adapted to nutrient deficient soils and arid climates would help achieve this. In this review, the use of plant growth-promoting bacteria is explored as a possible solution to the current state of dryland agriculture and climate change threats to agriculture. Plant microbe interactions form the basis of this review as evidence has shown that these interactions often exist to improve the health of plants. This is achieved by the production of important biochemicals and enzymes like indole acetic acid and amino cyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase while also actively protecting plants from pathogens including fungal pathogens. Research, therefore, has shown that these plant-growth promoting bacteria may be exploited and developed into biofertilisers. These biofertilisers are both economically and environmentally sustainable while improving soil quality and crop yield. The literature presented in this review is in context of the Namibian climate and soil profiles.

Potential Sources of Heavy Metals in Sediments of an Urban‒Agricultural Watershed and Relationship with Land Use Using a Statistical Approach

This study verified pollution levels through evaluation of the Sediment Quality Guidelines (SQGs), pollution load index (PLI), and potential ecological risk index (PERI) by analyzing the concentrations of heavy metals in sediments of an urban‒agricultural watershed in the Yeongsan River basin, South Korea. Statistical analyses were performed to determine the relationships between pollution levels and land use, and potential sources of pollution were identified. For spatial distributions, Pb, Zn, Cu, Cd, and Hg concentrations were highest at mid-upstream, but As, Cr, and Ni concentrations were similar at most sites. The polluted sites, which showed the potential toxicity toward benthic organisms in comparison to SQGs, were most frequently observed at mid-upstream. Moreover, PLI and PERI evaluations also confirmed levels of high anthropogenic pollution and the potential ecological risk at mid-upstream. The mid-upstream sites with high heavy metal pollutions showed high correlations with urban land use, which showed the highest distribution, implying a close relationship with anthropogenic impacts such as high population density and industrial complexes. Statistical analyses also confirmed that high heavy metal concentrations in the mid-upstream were closely related to urban land use. These findings suggest that urban areas are highly likely to cause anthropogenic heavy metal pollution in sediments as point or non-point sources such as domestic sewage and industrial wastewater flow into rivers.

Knowledge Mapping of the Phytoremediation of Cadmium-Contaminated Soil: A Bibliometric Analysis from 1994 to 2021

Cadmium pollution of soil threatens the environmental quality and human health. Phytoremediation of cadmium-contaminated soil has attracted global attention in recent decades. This study aimed to conduct a comprehensive and systematic review of the literature on phytoremediation of cadmium-contaminated soil based on bibliometric analysis. A total of 5494 articles published between 1994 and 2021 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. Our knowledge mapping presented the authors, journals, countries, institutions, and other basic information to understand the development status of phytoremediation of cadmium-contaminated soil. Based on a keyword cluster analysis, the identified major research domains were "biochar", "Thlaspi caerulescens", "endophytic bacteria", "oxidative stress", "EDTA", and "bioconcentration factor". Overall, this study provided a detailed summary of research trends and hotspots. Based on the keyword co-occurrence and burst analysis, the core concepts and basic theories of this field were completed in 2011. However, the pace of theoretical development has been relatively slow. Finally, future research trends/frontiers were proposed, such as biochar addition, rhizosphere bacterial community manipulation, cadmium subcellular distribution, and health risk assessment.

Allium cepa test vs. insecticides: a scientometric and meta-analytical review

Insecticides stand out as the most dangerous pesticides, and many of them can cause cytotoxic and genotoxic effects in organisms. For this reason, a systematic review was performed focusing on the effect of insecticides on Allium cepa system by two ways: (1) a scientometric study to identify trends and gaps in the literature on the evaluation of insecticides to guide future research efforts and (2) a meta-analytical approach compiling the information to obtain an overall result about insecticide effect on A. cepa. It was found that there is an increasing production of articles in this research area. The H-index of our data set was 11, with an average of 13.72 citations per item. The leader country in this research area was India, followed by Turkey and Brazil. The best cited research area was "Environmental Sciences" and "Environmental Sciences and Ecology," followed by "Cell Biology." The most used keywords were genotoxicity, pesticides, and insecticide. The meta-analytical test showed that the number of micronuclei found in onion cells treated with insecticides is higher than that in untreated ones, and the use of pesticides reduced the mitotic index. In conclusion, it is evident the need for more studies about biotechnology, nanotechnology, and biopesticides to develop safer pesticides.

Bibliometric Analysis of the Influencing Factors, Derivation, and Application of Heavy Metal Thresholds in Soil

The study of threshold levels of heavy metals in soil is essential for the assessment and management of soil environmental quality. This study reviewed the influencing factors, the derivation, and application aspects of heavy metals' threshold values comprehensively by a combination of bibliometric analysis and scientific knowledge mapping. A total of 1106 related studies were comprehensively extracted from the Web of Science database during the period from 2001 to 2020. The results showed that the publication output has been growing strongly. An analysis on the subject, journal, country, and institution was carried out to demonstrate the development and evolution of this research branch during the two decades. According to high-frequency keywords analysis, external factors (e.g., soil physicochemical properties) and internal factors (e.g., crop genotype) can affect heavy metal threshold values in the soil-crop system. The current methods mainly include the Point model (e.g., evaluation factor method), the Probability model (e.g., species sensitivity distribution method), and the Empirical model (e.g., ecological environment effect method). A threshold study can be applicable to the risk assessment for soil heavy metal contamination in order to determinate the soil pollution degree and its spatial and temporal distribution characteristics. Moreover, challenges and prospects of the study of heavy metal threshold values are proposed, indicating that research should focus on the relationships between human health risks and the established threshold values of heavy metals in the soil, long-term field trials and bioavailability of heavy metals for the derivation of the thresholds, and the establishment of more scientific and rational soil environmental benchmarks.

Spatial and temporal patterns of heavy metals and potential human impacts in Central Yangtze lakes, China

Lakes in the central Yangtze River basin have experienced increasing levels of human disturbance during the past several decades, yet large-scale environmental patterns in these lakes and their driving factors remain unclear. Herein we examined spatial and temporal patterns of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), arsenic (As), and seven other heavy metals from 16 lakes experiencing a gradient of human disturbance. These lakes were divided among six groups: suburban reservoirs (SR), suburban high-aquaculture lakes (SH), suburban low-aquaculture lakes (SL), suburban no-aquaculture lakes (SN), urban aquaculture lakes (UA) and urban no-aquaculture lakes (UN). Spatially, water-column concentrations of Cd, Ni, Co, Mn, Fe, and Al, and sediment concentrations of Ni were significantly lower in SR compared to other lake groups. Except for Al, heavy metal concentrations did not differ between SN and SL lakes in the water-column or sediments. SH lakes exhibited significantly greater concentrations of Cu, Co, Cr, Mn, and Al in the water-column and Zn in sediments compared to SN lakes. UA lakes contained significantly lower concentrations of Zn, Cd, and Al in sediment compared to UN lakes, though no significant differences were detected within water-column samples. Temporally, with all lake groups combined, summer water-column concentrations of Cd, Pb, Co, Mn, and Al were lower compared to spring and autumn. Additionally, summer sediment concentrations of Zn, As, Co, Fe also were lower compared to autumn. Further results indicated that low-density fish stockings without external feed inputs appeared to have little impact on heavy metals in both suburban and urban lakes. However, high-density fish stockings with external feed inputs were associated with increased heavy-metal concentrations across all lakes. Overall, urbanization has great potential to increase sediment heavy-metal ecological risks. These findings are crucial for developing heavy-metal pollution control and management strategies for freshwater lakes.

Bibliometric Analysis of Global Research on Ecological Networks in Nature Conservation from 1990 to 2020

As a nature-based solution to land-use sustainability, ecological networks (ENs) have received substantial attention from researchers, planners, and decision-makers worldwide. To portray the global research on ENs in nature conservation during the period of 1990–2020, 1371 papers in 53 subject categories were reviewed with bibliometric methods and CiteSpace. The results showed a successive growth of publications at an annually averaged rate of 18.9% during the past three decades. Co-citation analysis indicated that the most popular topic was connectivity, on which the studies concentrated on quantifying connectivity, identifying priority areas, and integrating conservation planning. A recent hotspot is to study the landscape fragmentation effects on natural habitats or biodiversity under land-use changes in urbanized areas. Multidisciplinary approaches have been increasingly used to tackle more complex interplays among economic, social, ecological, and cultural factors, with the aim of alleviating ecological service losses attributed to human activities. Spatiotemporal dynamics and participatory design of ENs at different scales have become an emerging trend. In order to address increasing pressures on biodiversity or landscape connectivity brought about by land use and climate change, it is suggested to develop more research on the evaluation and management of the resilience of ENs.

Bibliometric and Visual Analysis on Metabolomics in Coronary Artery Disease Research

Background

Metabolomics has immense research value in coronary artery disease and has drawn increasing attention over the past decades. Many articles have been published in this field, which may challenge researchers aiming to investigate all the available information. However, bibliometrics can provide deep insights into this research field.

Objective

We aimed to qualitatively and quantitatively study metabolomics and coronary artery disease research, visually analyse the development status, trends, research hotspots, and frontiers of this field, and provide a reference for research on coronary artery disease.

Methods

Articles were acquired from the Web of Science Core Collection. VOSviewer and CiteSpace software were used to analyse publication growth, country/region, institution, journal distribution, author, reference, and keywords, and detected the keywords with strong citation burstness to identify emerging topics.

Results

A total of 1121 references were obtained, and the annual number of publications increased over the past 16 years. Metabolomics research has shown a gradual upward trend in coronary artery disease. The United States of America and China ranked at the top in terms of percentage of articles. The institution with the highest number of research publications in this field was Harvard University, followed by the University of California System and Brigham Women's Hospital. The most frequently cited authors included Hazen SL, Tang WH, and Wang ZN. Ala-Korpela M was the most productive author, followed by Clish CB and Adamski J. The journal with the most publications in this field was Scientific Reports, followed by PLoS One and the Journal of Proteome Research. The keywords used at a high frequency were "risk," "biomarkers," "insulin resistance," and "atherosclerosis." Burst detection analysis of top keywords showed that "microbiota," "tryptophan," and "diabetes" are the current research frontiers in this field.

Conclusion

This study provides useful information for acquiring knowledge on metabolomics and coronary artery diseases. Metabolomics research has shown a gradual upward trend in coronary artery disease studies over the past 16 years. Research on tryptophan metabolism regulated by intestinal flora will become an emerging academic trend in this field, which can offer guidance for more extensive and in-depth studies in the future.

Bibliometric analysis of microbial sulfonamide degradation: Development, hotspots and trend directions

Microbial sulfonamide degradation (MSD) is an efficient and safe treatment in both natural and engineered ecosystems. In order to systematically understand the research status and frontier trends of MSD, this study employed CiteSpace to conduct a bibliometric analysis of data from the Web of Science (WoS) and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) published from 2000 to 2021. During this time, China, Germany, Spain, the United States and Australia played leading roles by producing numerous high impact publications, while the Chinese Academy of Sciences was the leading research institution in this interdisciplinary research category. The Chemosphere was the top journal in terms of the number of citations. MSD research has gradually progressed from basic laboratory-based experiments to more complex environmental microbial communities and finally to deeper research on molecular mechanisms and engineering applications. Although multi-omics and synthetic community are the key techniques in the frontier research, they are also the current challenges in this field. A summary of published articles shows that Proteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Burkholderiales and Alcaligenaceae are the most frequently observed MSD phylum, class, order and family, respectively, while Bacillus, Pseudomonas and Achromobacter are the top three MSD genera. To our knowledge, this study is the first to investigate the development and current challenges of MSD research, put forward future perspective, and form a relatively complete list of sulfonamide-degrading microorganisms for reference.

Characteristics and Trends of Ocean Remote Sensing Research from 1990 to 2020: A Bibliometric Network Analysis and Its Implications

The ocean is of great significance in the climate system, global resources and strategic decision making. With the continuous improvement in remote sensing technology, ocean remote sensing research has increasingly become an important topic for resource development and environmental protection. This paper uses bibliometric analysis method and VOSviewer visual software to conduct analysis. The analysis focuses on the period from 1990 to 2020. The analysis results show that articles have been steadily increasing over the past two decades. Scholars and researchers form the United States, China and Europe (mainly Western European countries), as well as NASA, Chinese Academy of Sciences and NOAA have bigger influence in this field to some extent. Among them, the United States and NASA holds the core leading position. Moreover, global cooperation in this field presents certain characteristics of geographical distribution. This study also reveals journals that include the most publications and subject categories that are highly relevant to related fields. Cluster analysis shows that remote sensing, ocean color, MODIS (or Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer), chlorophy, sea ice and climate change are main research hotspots. In addition, in the context of climate warming, researchers have improved monitoring technology for remote sensing to warn and protect ocean ecosystems in hotspots (the Arctic and Antarctica). The valuable results obtained from this study will help academic professionals keep informed of the latest developments and identify future research directions in the field related to ocean remote sensing.

Knowledge Map of Spatial Planning and Sustainable Development: A Visual Analysis Using CiteSpace

Spatial planning has become an important measure for countries and regions to promote sustainable development. However, there remains a lack of systematic and quantitative research on spatial planning worldwide. In this study, CiteSpace was used to perform bibliometric analysis and visualization research on the Web of Science core collection and China National Knowledge Infrastructure database. It was found that: (1) The number of papers published in global spatial planning research shows an increasing trend, especially after 2018, with China showing an obvious increasing trend. (2) Globally, the United States has the largest number of relevant research results, and Italy has the most cooperation with other countries. The highest research output is from developed countries, while that of developing countries is relatively weak. (3) There is some intersection among countries, disciplines, and authors but it is not strong, indicating that cooperation should be strengthened. (4) Through keyword cluster, timeline, and time zone analysis, global development can be roughly divided into three stages: the first stage is characterized by the study of spatial planning system theory, the second stage is characterized by building green infrastructure and providing ecological services, and the third stage is characterized by an emphasis on public participation and the establishment of justice mechanisms. China’s development corresponds to three stages: the theory and experience learning stage, the spatial planning system focused on economic development stage, and the integration of multiple plans and the sustainable development exploration stage. (5) There are differences in burst words between the world and China, indicating that there are great differences in research hotspots in different countries’ periods and conditions.

Unveiling the recycling characteristics and trends of spent lithium-ion battery: a scientometric study

The recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is both essential to sustainable resource utilization and environmental conservation. While spent batteries possess a resource value, they pose an environmental hazard at the same time. Since the start of development to recycle spent LIBs in 1990s, important contributions have been made and a number of achievements have been accomplished by scholars globally. Therefore, it is valuable to summarize the developments on spent LIB recycling and to analyze the characteristics and trends comprehensively. A review of the progress in this field will provide guidance for future development. In this study, recycling characteristics and developing trends including the research foundation, milestone, research hotspot, key technologies, and emerging trends were identified based on visual scientometric analysis followed by a discussion on future research directions in this area. For the analysis, 1041 publications in English were collected, summarized, and categorized. The distribution of scientific publications on spent LIB recycling from 1995 to 2020 displayed an increasing trend in numbers. China made the biggest contribution with 528 publications and basically cooperated with all other countries. The research fields with the highest contributions were "engineering", "chemistry", and "environmental science and technology". The keywords recovery, lithium ion battery, and cobalt appeared in high frequency. "Metal value" was identified as the most frequently used keyword which began to burst in 2005 and ended in 2013.

Trace metal enrichment in a tidally influenced, rural tributary of the upper Chesapeake Bay

Trace metals in sediments from the Chester River, a tidal tributary of the upper Chesapeake Bay with a predominantly rural, agricultural watershed, were investigated to better understand distributions and potential sources of metals. Sediments were analyzed for Al, Fe, Ni, Cr, Cu, Zn, As, Ag, Cd and organic C. Concentrations exceeded sediment toxicity guidelines in 44% of samples for Pb, and >20% for As, Ni, Cr, and Cu. Median enrichment factors (EF) for Cd, Ag, Pb, As and Zn were elevated above natural background levels. Nickel, Cu, Zn, and Cd exhibited significant differences in EF medians between the upper, middle, and lower segments of the river. Cadmium and As enrichments are presumably from application of inorganic and organic fertilizers in the watershed. Active marinas are likely an important source of metal enrichment, especially for Cu. The data underscore how land use in rural watersheds contributes to metals loading in aquatic systems.

Presence, sources, and risk assessment of heavy metals in the upland soils of northern China using Monte Carlo simulation

The spatial dynamics of heavy metal contamination in the upland soils of northern China are relatively unknown, despite the region's high contribution to the national grain output. In this study, the concentrations of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Pb, Sb, Sc, Ti, and Zn and subsequent ecological and human health risks were investigated in three major grain producing areas (Hexi Corridor, L1; Hetao irrigation area, L2; and eastern Inner Mongolia, L3) of northern China. Among the heavy metals, Ti had the highest average concentration of 3.02 g/kg, followed by Mn (470 mg/kg), Cr (56.6 mg/kg), Zn (34.3 mg/kg), Pb (19.4 mg/kg), Cu (17.8 mg/kg), Co (9.66 mg/kg), Sc (7.26 mg/kg), As (5.35 mg/kg), Sb (0.73 mg/kg), and Cd (0.17 mg/kg). Generally, the heavy metal concentrations decreased from west to east (L1 > L2 > L3) across northern China. Moreover, three potential sources of the heavy metal were distinguished, including natural process, anthropogenic activities (industrial development and agricultural cultivation), and atmospheric deposition. Although the contamination of the single metal (including Cd, Cr, Cu, and Pb) was moderate in L1 and L2, the combined contamination was low in the upland soils. It was noted that Cd posed a moderate to considerable ecological risk on the upland soils in northern China. This metal was the most sensitive factor in assessing the combined ecological risk, with a contribution rate of 91.56-94.84%. Considering the ingestion exposure, the current concentrations of the metals posed minimal risks to human health. Furthermore, children experienced higher health risks than adults. Present study analyzed the probabilistic distribution of contamination, ecological, and health risk of heavy metals in upland soils of northern China, providing fundamental information for better agricultural heavy metal pollution assessment in China.

Linking river sediment arsenic to catchment spatial attributes in agricultural landscapes

Understanding of the sources and processes involved in the heavy metal accumulation in river sediments is important for measuring the risks associated with human exposure. Hence, an integrated modeling approach was designed to study the linkage between landscape-related natural and anthropogenic features and high arsenic levels at the outlet of six catchments on the Ghareh-Ajagh River, central Iran. Sediment arsenic levels were measured in 8 months from October 2018 to November 2019 when the river sediment and water conditions were stable and ranged from 16.3 to 78.5 mg/kg. Monthly catchment-level agricultural areas were extracted from Landsat 8-OLI images. Predictive variables included NDVI values; area and spatial patterns of agriculture measured using four landscape metrics of NP, PD, MPS, and ENN; length and slope of the streams extended from main agricultural areas to the catchment outlet; and four hydrologic soil groups. The best-fitted multiple regression model (r2 = 0.763, p≤ 0.05) with the Akaike information criteria of 105.07 was developed using stream length, soil group C, and area and PD of agricultural areas. Results showed that sediment arsenic levels increase with increasing quantity and density of agricultural activities that were close to the river outlet and increasing proportion of silty loam or loamy soils but are relatively less dependent on agricultural structural patterns. These insights are helpful to inform policy decisions regarding the processes involved in river contamination in central Iran.

Ecological thresholds of periphytic communities and ecosystems integrity in lower Doce River basin

Freshwater biodiversity has been impacted by several stressors such as eutrophication, turbidity and metals. Besides these frequent impacts, large-scale accidents occasionally affect aquatic systems, input an intense load of contaminants to the water bodies, as in the case of the Fundão tailing dam collapse (Brazil), which launched millions of meters cubic of iron ore tailing in the Doce River Basin. Our aim in this study was to assess how much stress the environmental conditions of lentic and lotic environments in the lower region of this basin impact the periphytic community. In addition, we intend to verify whether the limits of changes of the periphytic communities agreed with Brazilian legislation for the protection of aquatic life. For that, monthly samplings were carried out in seven sampling stations in lentic environments and five in lotic environments, including the Doce River channel, between October/2018 and March/2021 (except in October/2019). Concentrations of metals (iron, aluminum, manganese and chromium), total nitrogen, total phosphorus, conductivity, and suspended particulate material were determined. The periphytic community was collected from natural substrates (macrophytes or pebbles) and quantified by the sedimentation chamber method. From these data, thresholds of concentrations of variables that caused changes in periphytic communities were determined by the Threshold Indicator Taxa ANalysis (TITAN). We concluded that evidence of chronic impact of iron ore tailing should be revealed and that the standards established by Brazilian legislation may be incompatible with the protection of aquatic life. Moreover, we found that the Doce River mouth and surrounding environments were the most stressful environments for the periphytic communities.

Ecological risk assessment of heavy metals in farmland soils in Beijing by three improved risk assessment methods

Beijing, as the capital of China, still has soil pollution problems that cannot be ignored. However, there are few studies on the overall ecological risks of heavy metals in farmland soils in Beijing. This study selected 432 soils and crops heavy metal content data of eight districts in Beijing from academic papers and academic journal papers. In this study, the improved Hakanson method, improved analytic hierarchy process (AHP), and integrated quality impact index (IICQ) comprehensively were used to evaluate the impact of Pb, As, and Cd pollution on the farmland soil environment, and the applicable conditions of these methods were discussed. The results by improved Hakanson method showed that both Pb and As were at the normal ecological risk level, while Cd was the largest contributor to potential ecological risk which accounted for 72.54% of the total risk and is mainly at a moderate ecological risk level. The analysis by improved AHP showed that the average comprehensive index of soil heavy metal pollution in the study area was 0.2317, which was at a light pollution level. The IICQ of soil and agricultural products were between 0 and 1 demonstrating that the soil was clean. In summary, the pollution of heavy metals Pb, As, and Cd in the study area is at a relatively low level, and there is no significant risk to the surrounding environment and human health. IICQ method is suitable for the evaluation of soil heavy metal composition and individual impact and can be more accurately used for the overall ecological evaluation of soil-crop-human health system.
