Abstract
Because of negative tap water quality perception, people often prefer bottled water over tap water despite the higher energy consumption and production of plastic waste. Taste and odour (T&O) deviations in tap water are an important aspect of this issue and should be avoided. However, T&O compounds typically occur at low concentrations (≤ ng.L-1) and are numerous, originating from various sources, ranging from source water to kitchen taps. Consequently, unravelling T&O events is challenging and causing compounds may remain unknown. Therefore, a multi-compound method (SBSE-TD-GC-MS) was developed, optimised and validated for the simultaneous trace analysis of 45 T&O compounds in drinking water. It covers key compounds of different odour categories with a wide range of physical-chemical properties and originating from the different steps of production and distribution. The intra- and interday precision of the method was shown by relative standard deviations (RSD) lower than 15 % and 23 %, respectively, for 75 % of the measured concentrations. For most of the compounds (>75 %), the detection capability (CCβ) was below 1/3rd of their lowest reported odour threshold concentration (OTC), while for the other 6 compounds, the CCβ was within the reported OTC range. Additionally, the CCβs were comparable to or lower than those in literature. As a proof of concept, the method was used to investigate the occurrence and concentrations of T&O compounds before (surface water) and after drinking water production. The results show a clear removal of compounds related to microbial activity (e.g. geosmin, 2-methylisoborneol, 2,4,6-tribromoanisole) after treatment and an increase of compounds related to disinfection. Although rarely investigated, 3-methylbutanal showed concentrations similar to its OTC in treated drinking water, emphasizing the necessity of a broad ultra-trace analysis to ultimately prevent the occurrence of T&O compounds and guarantee tap water quality.

Abstract
Monochloramine (MCA) is commonly added to drinking water as a disinfectant to prevent pathogen growth. The generation of MCA at the treatment plant requires tight control over both pH and the ratio of free chlorine (FC) to ammonia to avoid forming undesirable byproducts such as dichloramine (DCA) and trichloramine (TCA), which can impart odor and toxicity to the water. Therefore, continuous monitoring of MCA is essential to ensuring drinking water quality. Currently, standard colorimetric methods to measure MCA rely on the use of reagents and are unsuitable for online monitoring. In addition, other oxidants can interfere with MCA measurement. Here, we present a solid-state, reagent-free MCA sensing method using an array of few-layer graphene (FLG) chemiresistors. The array consists of exfoliated FLG chemiresistors functionalized with specific redox-active molecules that have differential responses to MCA, FC, and DCA over a range of concentrations. Chemometric methods were employed to separate the analytes' responses and to generate multivariate calibration for quantification. A minimum of three sensors are required in the array to maintain full functionality. The array has been demonstrated to quantify MCA in buffered and tap water as a low-cost, reagent-free approach to continuous monitoring.

Abstract
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals call for innovative proposals to ensure access to clean water and sanitation. While significant strides have been made in enhancing drinking water purification technologies, the role of drinking water distribution systems (DWDS) in maintaining water quality safety has increasingly become a focal point of concern. The presence of scale within DWDS can impede the secure and efficient functioning of the drinking water supply system, posing risks to the safety of drinking water quality. Previous research has identified that the primary constituents of scale in DWDS are insoluble minerals, such as calcium and magnesium carbonate. Elevated levels of hardness and alkalinity in the water can exacerbate scale formation. To address the scaling issue, softening technologies like induced crystallization, nanofiltration/reverse osmosis, and ion exchange are currently in widespread use. These methods effectively mitigate the scaling in DWDS by reducing the water's hardness and alkalinity. However, the application of softening technologies not only alters the hardness and alkalinity but also induces changes in the fundamental characteristics of water quality, leading to transition effects within the DWDS. This article reviews the impact of various softening technologies on the intrinsic properties of water quality and highlights the merits of electrochemical characteristic indicators in the assessment of water quality stability. Additionally, the paper delves into the factors that influence the transition effects in DWDS. It concludes with a forward-looking proposal to leverage artificial intelligence, specifically machine learning and neural networks, to develop an evaluation and predictive framework for the stability of drinking water quality and the transition effects observed in DWDS. This approach aims to provide a more accurate and proactive method for managing and predicting the impacts of water treatment processes on distribution system integrity and water quality over time.

Abstract
Nitrification is a serious water-quality issue in chloraminated engineered water systems (EWSs). Nitrification is often remediated by a chlorine burn (i.e., a free‑chlorine conversion), a short-term switch from chloramination to chlorination in EWSs. Opportunistic pathogens (OPs) are the dominant infectious agents in EWSs. However, the responses of OPs to a chlorine burn are unknown. This study for the first time assessed how a chlorine burn affected OPs in a full-scale EWS. We determined the impact of a 1.5-month chlorine burn on four dominant OPs (Legionella, Mycobacterium, Pseudomonas, and Vermamoeba vermiformis) in a representative full-scale chloraminated EWS in the United States. Legionella and Mycobacterium were the most abundant OPs. In the water main, the summed concentration of the four OPs during the chlorine burn [3.27 ± 1.58 log10(GCN·L-1); GCN: genome or gene copy number] was lower (p ≤ 0.001) than before the burn [4.83 ± 0.50 log10(GCN·L-1)]. After the burn, the summed concentration increased to 4.27 ± 0.68 log10(GCN·L-1), comparable to before the burn (p > 0.05), indicating a transient effect of the chlorine burn in the water main. At the residential sites, the summed concentrations of the four OPs were comparable (p > 0.05) at 5.50 ± 0.84, 5.27 ± 1.44, and 5.08 ± 0.71 log10(GCN·L-1) before, during, and after the chlorine burn, respectively. Therefore, the chlorine burn was less effective in suppressing OP (re)growth in the premise plumbing. The low effectiveness might be due to more significant water stagnation and disinfectant residual decay in the premise plumbing. Indeed, for the entire sampling period, the total chlorine residual concentration in the premise plumbing (1.8 mg Cl2·L-1) was lower than in the water main (2.4 mg Cl2·L-1). Consequently, for the entire sampling period, the summed concentration of the four OPs in the premise plumbing [5.26 ± 1.08 log10(GCN·L-1)] was significantly higher (p < 0.001) than in the water main [4.04 ± 1.25 log10(GCN·L-1)]. In addition, the chlorine burn substantially increased the levels of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in the water main. Altogether, a chlorine burn is transient or even ineffective in suppressing OP (re)growth but raises DBP concentrations in chloraminated EWSs. Therefore, the practice of chlorine burns to control nitrification should be optimized, reconsidered, or even replaced.

Abstract
Mixed chlorine/chloramines are commonly occurring in real drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs) but often overlooked. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the occurrences, characteristics, analysis methods, and control strategies of mixed chlorine/chloramines in DWDSs. The characteristics of mixed chlorine/chloramine species are summarized for treated water in drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs), secondary disinfection facilities, and DWDSs where different disinfectants could be blended. The key to differentiating and quantifying mixed chlorine/chloramine species is to separate organic chloramines (OCs) from di/tri-chloramines and overcome certain interferences. The complex interactions between water matrixes and chlorine/chloramine species could accelerate pipeline corrosions, enhance emerging disinfection by-products risks, lead to off-flavors in drinking water, and induce bio-instability issues (such as nitrification, microorganism regrowth, and promotion of horizontal gene-transfers). Three promising strategies for alleviating mixed chlorine/chloramine species are recommended, which include (i) removing precursors intensively and reconditioning the treated water, (ii) combining UV irradiation to eliminate undesired chlorine/chloramines species, and (iii) strengthening monitoring, operation, and maintenance management of DWDSs. Finally, the challenges for gaining insights into the mechanisms of mixed chlorine/chloramine species conversion are discussed and promising research directions are proposed.

Abstract
A sensitive and effective method was developed for the simultaneous determination of 14 odorous compounds in drinking water using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) coupled with headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) pretreatment. The influencing factors including SPME fiber, ionic strength, temperature and time on the pretreatment procedure were evaluated systematically. Under the optimized conditions, 10 mL of the samples added with 1.0 g sodium chloride was extracted by CAR/PDMS fiber at 60 °C for 30 min and then desorbed at 280 °C for 3 min. The analytes achieved good linearity as the mass concentrations were in the range of 0.0020-10.0 μg L-1 with correlation coefficients higher than 0.9990. The limits of detection (LODs) ranging between 0.2 and 50 ng L-1 were lower than the olfactory threshold of these studied compounds. Satisfactory recoveries were obtained ranging from 84.8% to 110.6%, and good reproducibility indicated by relative standard deviation (RSD) in the range of 0.50-9.5% was obtained as well. The proposed method was convenient, sensitive and accurate, which was suitable for the routine monitoring 14 odorous compounds in water.

Abstract
Disinfection by-products (DBPs) generated during the disinfection of drinking water have become an urgent problem. So, tea polyphenol, a natural green disinfectant, has attracted widespread attention in recent years. This review summarizes the antibacterial mechanism of tea polyphenols and the recent findings on tea polyphenols as disinfectants for drinking water. These studies show that tea polyphenol is an antibacterial agent that works through different mechanisms and can be used as a supplementary disinfectant because of its higher lasting effect and economical cost. The dosage of tea polyphenols as a disinfectant of ultrafiltration effluent is the lowest among all the tea polyphenols disinfection methods, which can ensure the microbial safety of drinking water. This application of tea polyphenols is deemed a practical solution to solving the issue of disinfecting drinking water and reducing DBPs. However, it is necessary to further explore the influence of factors such as pipeline materials on the disinfection process and efficacy to expand the application scope of tea polyphenols. The large-scale application of tea polyphenols still needs to be fine-tuned but with new developments in tea polyphenol purification technology and the long-term need for drinking water that is safe for human consumption, tea polyphenols have good prospects for further development.

Abstract
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of chlorine-based disinfectants has surged due to their excellent performance and cost-effectiveness in intercepting the spread of the virus and bacteria in water and air. Many authorities have demanded strict chlorine dosage for disinfection to ensure sufficient chlorine residual for inactivating viruses and bacteria while not posing harmful effects to humans as well as the environment. Reliable chlorine sensing techniques have therefore become the keys to ensure a balance between chlorine disinfection efficiency and disinfection safety. Up to now, there is still a lack of comprehensive review that collates and appraises the recently available techniques from a practical point of view. In this work, we intend to present a detailed overview of the recent advances in monitoring chlorine in both dissolved and gaseous forms aiming to present valuable information in terms of method accuracy, sensitivity, stability, reliability, and applicability, which in turn guides future sensor development. Data on the analytical performance of different techniques and environmental impacts associated with the dominated chemical-based techniques are thus discussed. Finally, this study concludes with highlights of gaps in knowledge and trends for future chlorine sensing development. Due to the increasing use of chlorine in disinfection and chemical synthesis, we believe the information present in this review is a relevant and timely resource for the water treatment industry, healthcare sector, and environmental organizations.

Smart Rainwater Harvesting for Sustainable Potable Water Supply in Arid and Semi-Arid Areas. SUSTAINABILITY 2022. Abstract
This paper presents a smart rainwater harvesting (RWH) system to address water scarcity in Palestine. This system aims to improve the water harvesting capacity by using a shared harvesting system at the neighborhood level and digital technology. The presentation of this system is organized as follows: (i) identification of the challenges of the rainwater harvesting at the neighborhood level, (ii) design of the smart RWH system architecture that addresses the challenges identified in the first phase, (iii) realization of a simulation-based reliability analysis for the smart system performance. This methodology was applied to a residential neighborhood in the city of Jenin, Palestine. The main challenges of smart water harvesting included optimizing the shared tank capacity, and the smart control of the water quality and leakage. The smart RWH system architecture design is proposed to imply the crowdsourcing-based and automated-based smart chlorination unit to control and monitor fecal coliform and residual chlorine: screens, filters, and the first flush diverter address RWH turbidity. Water level sensors/meters, water flow sensors/meters, and water leak sensors help detect a water leak and water allocation. The potential time-based reliability (Re) and volumetric reliability (Rv) for the smart RWH system can reach 38% and 41%, respectively. The implication of the smart RWH system with a dual water supply results in full reliability indices (100%). As a result, a zero potable water shortage could be reached for the dual water supply system, compared to 36% for the municipal water supply and 59% for the smart RWH system. Results show that the smart RWH system is efficient in addressing potable water security, especially when combined with a dual water supply system.

Abstract
The traditional methods of increasing the chlorine disinfectant dosage in the drinking water distribution system (DWDS) to control microorganisms and improve the safety of drinking water quality are subjected to several challenges. One noticeable problem is the unpleasant odor generated by chlorine and chloramines. However, the generally proposed chlorine dosage optimization model ignores the chloric odor distribution in the DWDS. This study proposes a comprehensive multi-parameter water quality model and aims to balance the trade-offs between: (i) minimize the flavor profile analysis (FPA) degree of the chloric odor produced by chlorine and chloramines in the DWDS, and (ii) minimize the economic investment (chlorine dosage and operation cost). EPANET and back propagation (BP) network integrated with the Borg algorithm were employed as innovative approaches to simulate the chlorine, chloramines, and chloric odor intensity in the DWDS. Moreover, the application of the multi-parameter model was demonstrated in a real-world DWDS case study. 0.5 mg-Cl2/L (mg/L) chlorine at 8 secondary chlorination points was added to the DWDS as an optimized chlorine dosing scheme considering the olfactory and financial objective functions simultaneously. When switching to a superior water source, the FPA of the chloric odor in DWDS increased by a maximum of 1.4 at most if the initial chlorine dosage remained as before. To avoid the occurrence of chloric odor and also control the residual free chlorine (residual chlorine) at a suitable value, the initial and secondary chlorine dosages were optimized to 0.4 mg/L and 0.3 mg/L, respectively. Under this condition, the initial chlorine dosage was reduced by 50% compared to the original operation scheme in City J, China, the qualification rate of the residual chlorine reached 97.2%, basically consistent with that before water source switching, and the chloric odor intensity of the DWDS was controlled below FPA 3.4.

Abstract
Microbial ammonia oxidation is the initial nitrification step used in biological nitrogen-removal during water treatment processes, and the discovery of complete ammonia-oxidizing (comammox) bacteria added a novel member to this functional group. It is important to identify and understand the predominant microorganisms responsible for ammonium removal in biotechnological process design and optimization. In this study, we used a full-scale bioreactor to treat ammonium in groundwater (9.3 ± 0.5 mg NH4+-N/L) and investigated the key ammonia-oxidizing prokaryotes present. The groundwater ammonium was stably and efficiently oxidized throughout ∼700 days of bioreactor operation. 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing of the bioreactor community showed a high abundance of Nitrospira (12.5-45.9%), with the dominant sequence variant (3.5-37.8%) most closely related to Candidatus Nitrospira nitrosa. Furthermore, analyses of amoA, the marker gene for ammonia oxidation, indicated the presence of two distinct comammox Nitrospira populations, however, the relative abundance of only one of these populations was strongly correlated to ammonia oxidation rates and was robustly expressed. After 380 days of operation copper wires were immersed into the reactor at 0.04-0.06 m2/m3 tank, which caused a gradual abundance increase of one discrete comammox Nitrospira population. However, further increase of the copper dosing (0.08 m2/m3 tank) inverted the most abundant ammonia-oxidizing population to Nitrosomonas sp. These results indicate that comammox Nitrospira were capable of efficient ammonium removal in groundwater without exogenous nutrients, but copper addition can stimulate comammox Nitrospira or lead to dominance of Nitrosomonas depending on dosage.

Abstract
Odors and tastes have become universal problems related to drinking water quality. In addition to the typical odor problems caused by algae or microorganisms, the occurrence of odors derived from drinking water disinfection have attracted attention. The chlor(am)ination-derived odor substances have certain toxicity and odor-causing characteristics, and would enter the tap water through water distribution systems, directly affecting drinking water safety and customer experience. This study provided a comprehensive overview of the occurrence, detection, and control of odor substances derived from drinking water chlor(am)ination disinfection. The occurrence and formation mechanisms of several typical types of disinfection derived odor substances were summarized, including haloanisoles, N-chloroaldimines, iodotrihalomethanes, and halophenoles. They are mainly derived from specific precursors such as halophenols, anisoles, and amino acids species during the disinfection or distribution networks. In addition, the change of disinfectant during chlor(am)ination was also one of the causes of disinfection odors. Due to the extremely low odor threshold concentrations (OTCs) of these odor substances, the effective sample pre-enrichment for instrument identification and quantification are essential. The control strategies of odor problems mainly include adsorption, chemical oxidation, and combined processes such as ozonation and biological activated carbon processes (O3/BAC) and ultraviolet-based advanced oxidation processes (UV-AOPs). Finally, the challenges and possible future research directions in this research field were discussed and proposed.

Abstract
Documentation exists for many chemicals that cause tastes and odors in water, however, water suppliers do not routinely monitor for these chemicals. Effective management of a taste-and-odor (T&O) problem in drinking water often requires good verbal description of the offending sensory experience. Experience demonstrates that obtaining verbal descriptions is challenging. To improve our understanding of communications, sensory science literature was reviewed to obtain descriptors for twenty-one chemicals acknowledged to cause T&O issues in drinking water. The review focused on pure chemicals above their odor threshold concentrations. Results reveal that descriptors follow four general categories. For select chemicals, strong consensus exists around a single or very few appropriate descriptors. Examples are "salty" for sodium and "chlorinous" for free chlorine. The next category has moderate agreement for several descriptors, with at least one major descriptor. For example the microbiological metabolite 2-methylisoborneol is most commonly described as "earthy/musty/moldy" but also "camphor, grass, and sweet". Some chemicals have weak agreement on their descriptors, but overall associate words with similar meaning. An example is the chemical toluene with descriptors of "solvent-like" words including "solvent", "gasoline", "paint-like", "cleaning fluid", and "etherish", but also "vinegar" and "sweet". The last chemical category possesses diverse descriptors with no consensus. For example, the oxylipin n-heptanal is described as "oily, fatty, chemical, musty/earthy/moldy, rancid, sweaty, grass, sickening, and stale". While descriptor diversity for select chemicals may not identify the cause of T&O, understanding that certain chemicals are perceived very differently aids in effective communications and eliminates confusion from expecting consumers or utility personnel to respond with consensus.

Abstract
With increasing shortage of clean water, rainwater has been considered as a precious alternative drinking water source. The processes applied to rainwater treatment are responsible for the safety of drinking water. Therefore, we systematically compared different disinfection processes to evaluate the control of disinfection by-product (DBP) formation and integrated cyto- and genotoxicity of the treated rainwater for the first time. The evaluated disinfection processes included chlorination and chloramination, pre-oxidation by potassium permanganate (KMnO4) and potassium ferrate (K2FeO4), ultraviolet/hydrogen peroxide (UV/H2O2), and ultraviolet/persulfate (UV/PS) processes. The results revealed that chloramination was effective for controlling the formation of carbonaceous DBPs (C-DBPs), but not nitrogenous DBPs (N-DBPs). Compared to KMnO4 pre-oxidation, better reduction of almost all DBPs was observed during K2FeO4 pre-oxidation. According to the calculation of cytotoxicity index (CTI) and genotoxicity index (GTI), cyto- and genotoxicity of the samples decreased obviously at the dosage of ≥ 2.0 mg/L KMnO4 and K2FeO4. The control of the cyto- and genotoxicity of the formed DBPs from the two UV-related AOPs was more effective at the dosage of ≥ 1.0 mM PS and ≥ 5.0 mM H2O2. Moreover, UV/PS was much more powerful to alter the structure of DBP precursors in rainwater.

Abstract
A total 190 experiments were performed to study the dissipation kinetics of monochloramine (NH2Cl, CAS no 10599-90-3) in surface water samples from six rivers (Loire, Rhône, Meuse, Garonne, Seine and Moselle) and an artificial reservoir (Mirgenbach), all located in France. Experiments were conducted in an open reactor, under relevant controlled environmental conditions. The impact of various parameters such as initial NH2Cl concentration, temperature, pH, presence of sediments, sampling site and collection period was investigated. It was found that NH2Cl dissipated rapidly without any lag phase, and that decay follows an apparent first-order kinetics (r2 > 0.99). Presence of sediment greatly accelerated decay. Half-lives were generally <1 h in river water in presence of natural sediment, but of several hours without sediment. The impact of pH was low for the normal river water pH range. However, increase in temperature significantly accelerated decay. The combination of high initial NH2Cl concentrations and elevated temperatures generally gives half-lives similar to those obtained at lower temperatures and lower concentrations. Short half-lives (0.06 to 1.50 h) were found in all the surface waters examined, regardless of geographic location of sampling site or collection period, indicating no temporal or site-specific effects on NH2Cl dissipation. Decay was slightly faster at lower initial concentrations, which supports extrapolation of half-lives measured in this study to a wide range of environmental concentrations. It can thus be assumed that NH2Cl degradation in river and reservoir waters is mainly determined by presence of sediments and temperature.

Abstract
Ultraviolet light-emitting diode (UV-LED) is a newly emerging UV light source with a potential to replace the conventional chemical methods, mercury UV lamps and xenon lamps in water disinfection. UV-LEDs are characterized by the diversity in wavelengths and can be turned on and off with a high and adjustable frequency, making them an attractive candidate for pulsed light (PL) disinfection apart from the conventional continuous wave (CW) operation. Previous studies on comparison between the PL and CW UV-LED irradiations for the inactivation of bacterium in water disinfection are limited and results conflict. In this work, PL and CW UV-LED in the C-spectral band (UVC-LED) irradiations were compared at equivalent fluence in the inactivation and subsequent photoreactivation of E. coli bacteria. In addition, effect of different driving currents and ambient temperatures on solder temperature of the PL and CW UVC-LED irradiation was also examined. Under the equivalent fluences, the PL and CW UVC-LED irradiations brought comparable inactivation efficiency and similar photoreactivation of the E. coli. Moreover, the PL UVC-LED exhibited a much lower solder temperature than the CW UVC-LED irradiation. On the other hand, CW UVC-LED irradiation, higher ambient temperature and higher driving current increased the solder temperature that resulted to a negative impact on the wavelength, full width at half maximum, optical power and irradiance, which are key factors in the UVC-LED disinfection efficiency. In all, this work reports the comparison between PL and CW in UVC-LED irradiation for inactivating E. coli bacteria and firstly revealed the photoreactivation of the E. coli after the PL UVC-LEDs irradiation.
