Antibiotic resistance genes allied to the pelagic sediment microbiome in the Gulf of Khambhat and Arabian Sea

Metagenomic perspectives on antibiotic resistance genes in tap water: The environmental characteristic, potential mobility and health threat

As an emerging environmental contaminant, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in tap water have attracted great attention. Although studies have provided ARG profiles in tap water, research on their abundance levels, composition characteristics, and potential threat is still insufficient. Here, 9 household tap water samples were collected from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) in China. Additionally, 75 sets of environmental sample data (9 types) were downloaded from the public database. Metagenomics was then performed to explore the differences in the abundance and composition of ARGs. 221 ARG subtypes consisting of 17 types were detected in tap water. Although the ARG abundance in tap water was not significantly different from that found in drinking water plants and reservoirs, their composition varied. In tap water samples, the three most abundant classes of resistance genes were multidrug, fosfomycin and MLS (macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin) ARGs, and their corresponding subtypes ompR, fosX and macB were also the most abundant ARG subtypes. Regarding the potential mobility, vanS had the highest abundance on plasmids and viruses, but the absence of key genes rendered resistance to vancomycin ineffective. Generally, the majority of ARGs present in tap water were those that have not been assessed and are currently not listed as high-threat level ARG families based on the World Health Organization Guideline. Although the current potential threat to human health posed by ARGs in tap water is limited, with persistent transfer and accumulation, especially in pathogens, the potential danger to human health posed by ARGs should not be ignored.

Recent Advances in Metagenomic Approaches, Applications, and Challenge

Advances in metagenomics analysis with the advent of next-generation sequencing have extended our knowledge of microbial communities as compared to conventional techniques providing advanced approach to identify novel and uncultivable microorganisms based on their genetic information derived from a particular environment. Shotgun metagenomics involves investigating the DNA of the entire community without the requirement of PCR amplification. It provides access to study all genes present in the sample. On the other hand, amplicon sequencing targets taxonomically important marker genes, the analysis of which is restricted to previously known DNA sequences. While sequence-based metagenomics is used to analyze DNA sequences directly from the environment without the requirement of library construction and with limited identification of novel genes and products that can be complemented by functional genomics, function-based metagenomics requires fragmentation and cloning of extracted metagenome DNA in a suitable host with subsequent functional screening and sequencing clone for detection of a novel gene. Although advances were made in metagenomics, different challenges arise. This review provides insight into advances in the metagenomic approaches combined with next-generation sequencing, their recent applications highlighting the emerging ones, such as in astrobiology, forensic sciences, and SARS-CoV-2 infection diagnosis, and the challenges associated. This review further discusses the different types of metagenomics and outlines advancements in bioinformatics tools and their significance in the analysis of metagenomic datasets.

Production of medium chain fatty acids from fermentation of antibiotic residuals: Fate of antibiotic resistance genes

The potential of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) amplification restricts the biological recovery of antibiotic fermentation residues (AFRs) through two-stage anaerobic fermentation. This study explored the fate of ARGs during the fermentation of AFRs that comprising of acidification and chain elongation (CE). Results showed that with the alteration of fermentation process from acidification to CE, microbial richness was significantly increased, total abundance of ARGs was slightly decreased by 1.84%, and the significant negative correlations between ARGs and microbes were increased, implied the inhibitory effect of CE microbes to ARGs amplification. However, the total abundance of mobile genetic elements (MGEs) was increased by 24.5%, indicating that the potential of gene horizontal transfer of ARGs increased. This work suggested that two-stage anaerobic fermentation could effectively restrict the ARGs amplification, but more concerns are needed for the long-term dissemination of ARGs.

Deep sequencing reveals comprehensive insight into the prevalence, mobility, and hosts of antibiotic resistance genes in mangrove ecosystems

Mangrove receives aquaculture wastewater and urban sewage, and thus is a potential reservoir for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). However, there is a dearth of a comprehensive profile of ARGs in mangrove ecosystems. We used metagenomic techniques to uncover the occurrence, host range, and potential mobility of ARGs in six mangrove ecosystems in southeastern China. Based on deep sequencing data, a total of 348 ARG subtypes were identified. The abundant ARGs were associated with acriflavine, bacitracin, beta-lactam, fluoroquinolone, macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin, and polymyxin. Resistance genes tetR, aac(6')-Iae, aac(3)-IXa, vanRA, vanRG, and aac(3)-Ig were proposed as ARG indicators in mangrove ecosystems that can be used to evaluate the abundance of 100 other co-occurring ARGs quantitatively. Remarkably, 250 of 348 identified ARG subtypes were annotated as mobile genetic elements-associated ARGs, indicating a high potential risk of propagation of ARGs in mangrove ecosystems. By surveying the distribution of ARGs in 6281 draft genomes, more than 42 bacterial phyla were identified as the putative hosts of the ARGs. Among them, 21.97% were potentially multidrug-resistant hosts, including human and animal opportunistic pathogens. This research adds to our understanding of the distribution and spread of antibiotic resistomes in mangrove ecosystems, helping improve ARG risk assessment and management worldwide.

Production of medium chain fatty acids from antibiotic fermentation residuals pretreated by ionizing radiation: Elimination of antibiotic resistance genes

The propagation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) restricts the application of antibiotic fermentation residues (AFRs). This study investigated medium chain fatty acids (MCFA) production from AFRs, focusing on the effect of ionizing radiation pretreatment on the fates of ARGs. The results indicated that ionizing radiation pretreatment not only stimulated the MCFA production, but also inhibited the proliferation of ARGs. Radiation at 10-50 kGy decreased ARGs abundances by 0.6-21.1% at the end of fermentation process. Mobile genetic elements (MGEs) exhibited higher resistance to ionizing radiation, radiation over 30 kGy was required to suppress the proliferation of MGEs. Radiation at 50 kGy achieved an adequate inhibition to MGEs, and the degradation efficiency was 17.8-74.5% for different kinds of MGEs. This work suggested that ionizing radiation pretreatment could be a good option to ensure the safer application of AFRs by eliminating the ARGs and preventing the horizontal gene transfer of ARGs.

Microbial machinery dealing diverse aromatic compounds: Decoded from pelagic sediment ecogenomics in the gulfs of Kathiawar Peninsula and Arabian Sea

Aromatic hydrocarbons are persistent pollutants in aquatic systems as endocrine disruptors, significantly impacting natural ecosystems and human health. Microbes perform as natural bioremediators to remove and regulate aromatic hydrocarbons in the marine ecosystem. The present study focuses upon the comparative diversity and abundance of various hydrocarbon-degrading enzymes and their pathways from deep sediments along the Gulf of Kathiawar Peninsula and Arabian Sea, India. The elucidation of large number of degradation pathways in the study area under the presence of a wide range of pollutants whose fate needs to be addressed. Sediment core samples were collected, and the whole microbiome was sequenced. Analysis of the predicted ORFs (open reading frames) against the AromaDeg database revealed 2946 aromatic hydrocarbon-degrading enzyme sequences. Statistical analysis portrayed that the Gulfs were more diverse in degradation pathways compared to the open sea, with the Gulf of Kutch being more prosperous and more diverse than the Gulf of Cambay. The vast majority of the annotated ORFs belonged to groups of dioxygenases that included catechol, gentisate, and benzene dioxygenases, along with Rieske (2Fe-2S) and vicinal oxygen chelate (VOC) family proteins. From the sampling sites, only 960 of the total predicted genes were given taxonomic annotations, which mention the presence of many under-explored marine microorganism-derived hydrocarbon degrading genes and pathways. Through the present study, we tried to unveil the array of catabolic pathways of aromatic hydrocarbon degradation and genes from a marine ecosystem that upholds economic and ecological significance in India. Thus, this study provides vast opportunities and strategies for microbial resource recovery in marine ecosystems, which can be investigated to explore aromatic hydrocarbon degradation and their potential mechanisms under various oxic or anoxic environments. Future studies should focus on aromatic hydrocarbon degradation by considering degradation pathways, biochemical analysis, enzymatic, metabolic, and genetic systems, and regulations.

Evaluation of a synbiotic formulation for water remediation in a shrimp pond

In recent years, the use of probiotic bacteria has attracted the interest of the marine shrimp farming industry. However, there are certain limitations pertaining to the practical application of many commercially available probiotics. Here, a thoroughly screened optimal consortium of three indigenous sulfur probiotics was tested for antibiotic susceptibility and was found to be safe, with each culture being sensitive to all the tested antibiotics. Further, de-potash vinasse (DPV), an environmental hazard, was tested for its prebiotic potential, and its 1% (w/v) concentration was found to be effective for long-term viability (> 66 days) of the probiotic cultures and safe for Artemia. The synbiotic formulation was tested first in a lab-scale microcosm setup successfully and subsequently tried on a shrimp farm; it was observed that the product was congruent to the efficiency of a commercial probiotic regarding almost all physicochemical parameters, sulfide, nitrate-N, nitrite-N, phytoplankton sustenance, Pseudomonas count, coliform count, and heterotrophic count. In addition, it was significantly efficient in maintaining pH, reducing ammonia-N and phosphate-P, Vibrio and Aeromonas count, and a net increase in the yield of shrimp biomass by 625 kg, thus proving to be a better alternative than one of the already available remediation methods.

Metagenomes from Coastal Sediments of Kuwait: Insights into the Microbiome, Metabolic Functions and Resistome

Coastal sediments in the proximity of wastewater and emergency outfalls are often sinks of pharmaceutical compounds and other organic and inorganic contaminants that are likely to affect the microbial community. The metabolites of these contaminants affect microbial diversity and their metabolic processes, resulting in undesirable effects on ecosystem functioning, thus necessitating the need to understand their composition and functions. In the present investigation, we studied the metagenomes of 12 coastal surface sediments through whole genome shot-gun sequencing. Taxonomic binning of the genes predicted about 86% as bacteria, 1% as archaea, >0.001% as viruses and Eukaryota, and 12% as other communities. The dominant bacterial, archaeal, and fungal genera were Woeseia, Nitrosopumilus, and Rhizophagus, respectively. The most prevalent viral families were Myoviridae and Siphoviridae, and the T4 virus was the most dominant bacteriophage. The unigenes further aligned to 26 clusters of orthologous genes (COGs) and five carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZy) classes. Glycoside hydrolases (GH) and glycoside transferase (GT) were the highest-recorded CAzymes. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) level 3 functions were subjugated by purine metabolism > ABC transporters > oxidative phosphorylation > two-component system > pyrimidine metabolism > pyruvate metabolism > quorum sensing > carbon fixation pathways > ribosomes > and glyoxalate and dicarboxylate metabolism. Sequences allying with plasmids, integrons, insertion sequences and antibiotic-resistance genes were also observed. Both the taxonomies and functional abundances exhibited variation in relative abundances, with limited spatial variability (ANOVA p > 0.05; ANOSIM-0.05, p > 0.05). This study underlines the dominant microbial communities and functional genes in the marine sediments of Kuwait as a baseline for future biomonitoring programs.

An appraisal of early stage biofilm-forming bacterial community assemblage and diversity in the Arabian Sea, India

The community composition and distribution of early-stage (24 h) biofilm-forming bacteria on two different surfaces (glass slide and polystyrene plastic slide) at three different locations (Diu, Alang and Sikka) were studied using a culture-dependent and next-generation sequencing (NGS) approach in the Arabian Sea, Gujarat, India. The most dominant phyla observed using the NGS approach were the Proteobacteria among the sampling sites. Gammaproteobacteria class dominated both the surfaces among the sites and accounted for 46.7% to 89.2% of total abundance. The culture-dependent analysis showed Proteobacteria and Firmicutes as the dominant phyla on the surfaces within the sampling sites. During the initial colonization, hydrocarbon-degrading bacterial strains have also attached to the surfaces. The outcome of this study would be of great importance for targeting the early stage biofilm-forming and hydrocarbon-degrading bacterial isolates may help to degrade plastic in the marine environment.

Antibiotic Resistance Genes Associated with Marine Surface Sediments: A Baseline from the Shores of Kuwait

Marine sediments are a sink for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic-resistant microbes (ARMs). Wastewater discharge into the aquatic environment is the dominant pathway for pharmaceuticals reaching aquatic organisms. Hence, the characterization of ARGs is a priority research area. This baseline study reports the presence of ARGs in 12 coastal sediment samples covering the urban coastline of Kuwait through whole-genome metagenomic sequencing. The presence of 402 antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) were recorded in these samples; the most prevalent were patA, adeF, ErmE, ErmF, TaeA, tetX, mphD, bcrC, srmB, mtrD, baeS, Erm30, vanTE, VIM-7, AcrF, ANT4-1a, tet33, adeB, efmA, and rpsL, which showed resistance against 34 drug classes. Maximum resistance was detected against the beta-lactams (cephalosporins and penam), and 46% of genes originated from the phylum Proteobacteria. Low abundances of ESKAPEE pathogens (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumonia, Acinetobacter baumanii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter sps., and Escherichia coli) were also recorded. Approximately 42% of ARGs exhibited multiple drug resistance. All the ARGs exhibited spatial variations. The major mode of action was antibiotic efflux, followed by antibiotic inactivation, antibiotic target alteration, antibiotic target protection, and antibiotic target replacement. Our findings supported the occurrence of ARGs in coastal marine sediments and the possibility of their dissemination to surrounding ecosystems.

Analysis of microbial community resistance mechanisms in groundwater contaminated with SAs and high NH4+-Fe-Mn

The resistance mechanism of microbial communities in contaminated groundwater under the combined stress of sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs), NH₄⁺, and Fe-Mn exceeding the standard levels was studied in an agricultural area along the Songhua River in Northeast China with developed livestock and poultry breeding. Representative points were selected in the study area to explore the response of environmental parameters and microbial communities, and microscopic experiments with different SA concentrations were conducted with background groundwater. The results showed a complex relationship between microbial communities and environmental factors. The environmental factors SM, SM2, SMX, DOC, NO₃^-, Fe, Mn, and HCO₃^- significantly affected the microbial community, with SMX, DOC, and Mn having the greatest effect. Three types of antibiotics with similar properties had different effects on the microbial community, and these effects were not simply additive or superimposed. After adding SAs, Proteobacteria with multi-resistance (99.85%) became the dominant phylum, and Acinetobacter (98.68%) became the dominant genus with SA resistance. SAs have a significant influence on bacterial chemotaxis, transporters, substance transport, and metabolism. Microorganisms resist the influence of SAs via a series of resistance mechanisms, such as enhancing the synthesis of relevant enzymes, generating new biochemical reactions, and reducing the transport of harmful substances through cell membranes. We also found that the proportion of exogenous compound degradation and metabolism-related functional genes in the presence of high SA concentrations increased significantly, which may be related to the degradation of SAs by microorganisms.

Plasmid-Mediated Transfer of Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Soil

Due to selective pressure from the widespread use of antibiotics, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are found in human hosts, plants, and animals and virtually all natural environments. Their migration and transmission in different environmental media are often more harmful than antibiotics themselves. ARGs mainly move between different microorganisms through a variety of mobile genetic elements (MGEs), such as plasmids and phages. The soil environment is regarded as the most microbially active biosphere on the Earth’s surface and is closely related to human activities. With the increase in human activity, soils are becoming increasingly contaminated with antibiotics and ARGs. Soil plasmids play an important role in this process. This paper reviews the current scenario of plasmid-mediated migration and transmission of ARGs in natural environments and under different antibiotic selection pressures, summarizes the current methods of plasmid extraction and analysis, and briefly introduces the mechanism of plasmid splice transfer using the F factor as an example. However, as the global spread of drug-resistant bacteria has increased and the knowledge of MGEs improves, the contribution of soil plasmids to resistance gene transmission needs to be further investigated. The prevalence of multidrug-resistant bacteria has also made the effective prevention of the transmission of resistance genes through the plasmid-bacteria pathway a major research priority.

The effect of bacterial functional characteristics on the spread of antibiotic resistance genes in Expanded Granular Sludge Bed reactor treating the antibiotic wastewater

To explore the fate and spreading mechanism of antibiotics resistance genes (ARGs) in antibiotics wastewater system, a laboratory-scale (1.47 L) Expanded Granular Sludge Bed (EGSB) bioreactor was implemented. The operating parameters temperature (T) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) were mainly considered. This result showed the removal of ARGs and COD was asynchronous, and the recovery speed of ARGs removal was slower than that COD removal. The decreasing T was attributed to the high growth rate of ARGs host bacteria, while the shortened HRT could promote the horizontal and vertical gene transfer of ARGs in the sludge. The analysis result of potential bacterial host showed more than half of the potential host bacteria carried 2 or more ARGs and suggested an indirect mechanism of co-selection of multiple ARGs. Phylogenetic Investigation of Communities by Reconstruction of Unobserved States (PICRUSt) was used to investigate the functional characteristics of bacterial community. This result showed the bacterial functional genes contributed 40.41% to the abundance change of ARGs in the sludge, which was higher that of bacterial community. And the function genes of "aromatic hydrocarbon degradation", "Replication, recombination and repair proteins" and "Flagellar assembly" were mainly correlated with the transfer of ARGs in the sludge. This study further revealed the mechanism of ARGs spread in the EGSB system, which would provide new ideas for the development of ARGs reduction technology.

Comparative genome analysis of the genus Hydrotalea and proposal of the novel species Hydrotalea lipotrueae sp. nov., isolated from a groundwater aquifer in the south of Mallorca Island, Spain

From a collection of > 140 strains isolated from groundwater with thermal anomalies for the purpose of obtaining good candidates with applications in the cosmetic industry, two strains were selected because of their taxonomic novelty. Among the isolates, strains TMF_100^T and TFM_099 stood out for their potential biotechnological relevance, and a comparative analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that these strains represented a new species of the genus Hydrotalea. In addition, from the public genomic databases, metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) and single-cell amplified genomes (SAGs) could be retrieved that affiliated with this genus. These MAGs and SAGs had been obtained from different environmental samples, such as acid mine drainage or marine sediments. In addition to the description of the new species, the ecological relevance of the members of this genus was demonstrated by means of denitrification, CRISPR-Cas system diversity and heavy metal resistance, as well as their wide geographical distribution and environmental versatility. Supported by the taxonomic study, together with physiological and morphological differences and ecological features, we concluded that strain TMF_100^T represented a novel species within the genus Hydrotalea, for which we propose the name Hydrotalea lipotrueae sp. nov.

309 metagenome assembled microbial genomes from deep sediment samples in the Gulfs of Kathiawar Peninsula

Prokaryoplankton genomes from the deep marine sediments are less explored compared to shallow shore sediments. The Gulfs of Kathiawar peninsula experience varied currents and inputs from different on-shore activities. Any perturbations would directly influence the microbiome and their normal homeostasis. Advancements in reconstructing genomes from metagenomes allows us to understand the role of individual unculturable microbes in ecological niches like the Gulf sediments. Here, we report 309 bacterial and archaeal genomes assembled from metagenomics data of deep sediments from sites in the Gulf of Khambhat and Gulf of Kutch as well as a sample from the Arabian Sea. Phylogenomics classified them into 5 archaeal and 18 bacterial phyla. The genomes will facilitate understanding of the physiology, adaptation and impact of on-shore anthropogenic activities on the deep sediment microbes.

Viral footprints across Gulfs of Kathiawar Peninsula and Arabian Sea: Unraveled from pelagic sediment metagenomic data

Marine biosphere is one of the largest, diverse and dynamic system hosting numerous of microorganisms. Viruses being the most abundant under explored lifeforms in ocean, represent a reservoir of great genetic diversity. We report the metagenomic insights on the viral communities in the deep sediments of the two Gulfs of Gujarat i.e. Gulf of Khambhat and Gulf of Kutch, with one sample from Arabian Sea, treated as open sea control. The viral reads were filtered from the whole dataset, assembled and studied for viral diversity, which was visualized by Pavian. The sequences were checked for the viral abundance, diversity and functionality. The resulting viral taxonomic classification contained 6 orders, 8 families and 47 genera. The results revealed that the phages infecting Cyanobacterium, Bacillus and Vibrio dominated the sediments. Further, it was observed that majority of viral sequences belonged to double-stranded DNA phages. The present study attempts to provide a primary insight of the viral signals and potential genetic content in the Gulfs of Kathiawar.

Fungi with high ability to crunch multiple Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) from the pelagic sediments of Gulfs of Gujarat

Marine ecosystem harbors diverse microbial diversity adapted to varied environmental conditions and stress. Gujarat possesses a wide coastline with unique and diverse niche in its two Gulfs. PAHs enter marine environments through various anthropogenic discharges and act as a threat to environment due to their xenobiotic nature. In the present study, sediment cores were collected across 4 coordinates, each from Gulf of Kutch and Khambhat; while one from Arabian sea. These samples were enriched for fungal growth in basal medium supplemented with naphthalene, pyrene, phenanthrene, anthracene and fluoranthene. Eight isolates were obtained from 3 samples and checked for tolerance against 5 PAHs followed by assessment of their biodegradation ability. Penicillium ilerdanum NPDF1239-K3-F21 and Aspergillus versicolor NPDF190-C1-26 showed >75% ability to degrade multiple PAHs. The results reveal the potential of fungal isolates from pelagic sediment for further in situ optimization and application in PAH removal from contaminated soil and sediment.

Sediment Plasmidome of the Gulfs of Kathiawar Peninsula and Arabian Sea: Insights Gained from Metagenomics Data

Plasmidomes have become the research area of interest for ecologists exploring bacteria rich ecosystems. Marine environments are among such niche that host a huge number of microbes and have a complex environment which pose the need to study these bacterial indicators of horizontal gene transfer events for survival and stability. The plasmid content of the metagenomics data from 8 sediment samples of the Gulfs of Kathiawar and an open Arabian Sea sample was screened. The reads corresponding to hits against the plasmid database were assembled and studied for diversity using Kraken and functional content using MG-RAST. The sequences were also checked for resistome and virulence factors. The replicon hosts were overall dominated by Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria while red algae specific to the Kutch samples. The genes encoded were dominant in the flagella motility and type VI secretion systems. Overall, results from the study confirmed that the plasmids encoded traits for metal, antibiotic, and phage resistance along with virulence systems, and these would be conferring benefit to the hosts. The study throws insights into the environmental role of the plasmidome in adaptation of the microbes in the studied sites to the environmental stresses.

Antibiotic Resistome Biomarkers associated to the Pelagic Sediments of the Gulfs of Kathiawar Peninsula and Arabian Sea

Antibiotic resistance has been one of the most persistent global issue. Specifically, marine microbiomes have served as complex reservoirs of antibiotic resistant genes. Molecular advancements have enabled exploration of the uncultured microbial portion from hitherto difficult to sample niches such as deeper oceans. The Gulfs of Kathiawar Peninsula have been known for their unique properties like extreme tidal variations, different sediment textures and physicochemical variations. Pelagic sediment cores across four coordinates each of the Gulf of Kutch, Gulf of Khambhat and an open Arabian Sea were collected, processed for metagenomic sequencing and assessed for antibiotic and metal resistome. The dominant genes were mostly resistant to macrolides, glycopeptides and tetracycline drugs. Studied samples divided into three clusters based on their resistome with carA, macB, bcrA, taeA, srmB, tetA, oleC and sav1866 among the abundant genes. Samples from creek of Gulf of Kutch and mouth of Gulf of Khambhat were most diverse in resistance gene profile. Biomarkers observed include gyrA mutation conferring resistance gene in the Arabian Sea; Proteobacteria species in Gulf of Kutch and Arabian sea; while Aquificae, Acidobacteria and Firmicutes species in the Gulf of Khambhat. Region-wise differentially abundant 23 genes and 3 taxonomic biomarkers were proposed for antibiotic resistance monitoring.

Editorial of the VSI "Antibiotics and heavy metals in the environment: Facing the challenge"

The Virtual Special Issue (VSI) "Antibiotics and Heavy Metals in the Environment: Facing the Challenge" received more than 100 submissions from research teams around the world. Finally, more than 50 papers were accepted and published. These very interesting research papers allow going ahead in the knowledge of different aspects which determine the fate of antibiotics and heavy metals in the environmental. The success of the VSI, as well as reports from scientific databases, indicate that this field of research is clearly growing, which is expected to continue, especially considering emerging pollutants as a whole.
