Occurrence, fate and environmental risk of anionic surfactants, bisphenol A, perfluorinated compounds and personal care products in sludge stabilization treatments

Environmental Fate of Organic UV Filters: Global Occurrence, Transformation, and Mitigation via Advanced Oxidation Processes

Organic UV filters are used in personal care products, plastics, paints, and textiles to protect against UV radiation. Despite regulatory limits, these compounds still enter the environment through direct wash-off during swimming, evaporation, leaching from products, and incomplete removal in wastewater treatment plants. They have been detected in various environmental matrices worldwide. Once in the environment, organic UV filters can undergo phototransformation and biotransformation, forming transformation products that, together with parent substances, pose health risks to humans and wildlife and harm marine ecosystems, especially coral reefs. The increasing concern over water scarcity and the environmental impact of pollutants underscores the importance of eliminating these contaminants from aquatic environments. This review primarily focuses on organic UV filters approved for use in sunscreens, many of which are also utilized in other materials, with a few exceptions including UV stabilizer UV-328. It includes an in-depth analysis of 155 peer-reviewed articles published from 2015 to 2024, assessing the concentrations of these filters in various environmental matrices, including water and solid matrices, air and biota. Moreover, this review explores the environmental transformation of these chemicals and assesses the effectiveness of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in removing these pollutants. The findings highlight the pervasive presence of organic UV filters in the environment and the promising potential of AOPs to mitigate the associated environmental challenges.

Can pyrolysis and composting of sewage sludge reduce the release of traditional and emerging pollutants in agricultural soils? Insights from field and laboratory investigations

The potential extractability, crop uptake, and ecotoxicity of conventional and emerging organic and metal(loid) contaminants after the application of pre-treated (composted and pyrolysed) sewage sludges to two agricultural soils were evaluated at field and laboratory scale. Metal(loid) extractability varied with sludge types and pre-treatments, though As, Cu, and Ni decreased universally. In the field, the equivalent of 5 tons per hectare of both composted and pyrolysed sludges brought winter wheat grain metal(loid) concentrations below statutory limits. Carbamazepine, diclofenac, and telmisartan were the only detected organic pollutants in crops decreasing in order of root > shoot > grains, whilst endocrine-disrupting chemicals, such as bisphenol A and perfluorochemicals were heavily reduced by composting (up to 71%) or pyrolysis (up to below detection limit) compared to raw sludges. As a consequence, no detectable concentrations were measured in soils 12 months after field application. This study highlights the potential advantages of processing sewage sludge before soil applications, especially in the context of reducing the mobility of emerging contaminants, though further studies are required on a broad range of soils and crops before land application can be considered.

Global performance and trends of research on emerging contaminants in sewage sludge: A Bibliometric Analysis from 1990 to 2023

The pervasive occurrence of emerging contaminants (ECs) in sewage sludge (SWS) poses significant safety challenges concerning the processing, disposal, and secure application, ultimately jeopardizing both human health and the ecological environment. To comprehensively comprehend the evolutionary trajectories, present state, and research advancements in the field of ECs in SWS, a systematic was conducted, scrutinizing the annual publication quantity, disciplinary distribution, core authors, involved nations/regions, pertinent keywords, and citation status of 2082 research publications related to ECs in SWS from 1990 to 2023. The results indicate a substantial upward trajectory in the research literature pertaining to ECs in SWS. The study of ECs in SWS encompasses 78 disciplines, including Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, and Water Resources. China, Spain, and the USA ranked among the top three countries in terms of both total publications and citation frequency. The majority of publications were published in reputable high-impact journals such as Science of the Total Environment, Chemosphere, and Bioresource Technology. Based on high-frequency keywords, co-occurrence networks of keywords, and keywords burst analysis, it is found that the occurrence and environment behavior of ECs in SWS (ARGs, microplastics, PPCPs, and POPs), the detection and analytical methods, the impact on SWS treatment and disposal processes, and the accumulation and ecological risks in plants and soil during SWS land utilization, are the main research directions and hot topics in this field. In the future, the study of the impact of SWS treatment technologies on ECs removal is expected to receive increased research attention.

Combining Nontargeted Analysis with Computer-Based Hazard Comparison Approaches to Support Prioritization of Unregulated Organic Contaminants in Biosolids

Biosolids are a byproduct of wastewater treatment that can be beneficially applied to agricultural land as a fertilizer. While U.S. regulations limit metals and pathogens in biosolids intended for land applications, no organic contaminants are currently regulated. Novel techniques can aid in detection, evaluation, and prioritization of biosolid-associated organic contaminants (BOCs). For example, nontargeted analysis (NTA) can detect a broad range of chemicals, producing data sets representing thousands of measured analytes that can be combined with computational toxicological tools to support human and ecological hazard assessment and prioritization. We combined NTA with a computer-based tool from the U.S. EPA, the Cheminformatics Hazard Comparison Module (HCM), to identify and prioritize BOCs present in U.S. and Canadian biosolids (n = 16). Four-hundred fifty-one features were detected in at least 80% of samples, with identities of 92 compounds confirmed or assigned probable structures. These compounds were primarily categorized as endogenous compounds, pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals, and fragrances. Examples of top prioritized compounds were p-cresol and chlorophene, based on human health end points, and fludioxonil and triclocarban, based on ecological health end points. Combining NTA results with hazard comparison data allowed us to prioritize compounds to be included in future studies of the environmental fate and transport of BOCs.

Occurrence, bioaccumulation, fate, and risk assessment of emerging pollutants in aquatic environments: A review

Significant concerns on a global scale have been raised in response to the potential adverse impacts of emerging pollutants (EPs) on aquatic creatures. We have carefully reviewed relevant research over the past 10 years. The study focuses on five typical EPs: pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), drinking water disinfection byproducts (DBPs), brominated flame retardants (BFRs), and microplastics (MPs). The presence of EPs in the global aquatic environment is source-dependent, with wastewater treatment plants being the main source of EPs. Multiple studies have consistently shown that the final destination of most EPs in the water environment is sludge and sediment. Simultaneously, a number of EPs, such as PFASs, MPs, and BFRs, have long-term environmental transport potential. Some EPs exhibit notable tendencies towards bioaccumulation and biomagnification, while others pose challenges in terms of their degradation within both biological and abiotic treatment processes. The results showed that, in most cases, the ecological risk of EPs in aquatic environments was low, possibly due to potential dilution and degradation. Future research topics should include adding EPs detection items for the aquatic environment, combining pollution, and updating prediction models.

Use of nitrate, sulphate, and iron (III) as electron acceptors to improve the anaerobic degradation of linear alkylbenzene sulfonate: effects on removal potential and microbiota diversification

Linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) is a synthetic anionic surfactant that is found in certain amounts in wastewaters and even in water bodies, despite its known biodegradability. This study aimed to assess the influence of nitrate, sulphate, and iron (III) on LAS anaerobic degradation and biomass microbial diversity. Batch reactors were inoculated with anaerobic biomass, nutrients, LAS (20 mg L-1), one of the three electron acceptors, and ethanol (40 mg L-1) as a co-substrate. The control treatments, with and without co-substrate, showed limited LAS biodegradation efficiencies of 10 ± 2% and 0%, respectively. However, when nitrate and iron (III) were present without co-substrate, biodegradation efficiencies of 53 ± 4% and 75 ± 3% were achieved, respectively, which were the highest levels observed. Clostridium spp. was prominent in all treatments, while Alkaliphilus spp. and Bacillus spp. thrived in the presence of iron, which had the most significant effect on LAS biodegradation. Those microorganisms were identified as crucial in affecting the LAS anaerobic degradation. The experiments revealed that the presence of electron acceptors fostered the development of a more specialised microbiota, especially those involved in the LAS biodegradation. A mutual interaction between the processes of degradation and adsorption was also shown.

Emerging organic contaminants in the soil-plant-receptor continuum: transport, fate, health risks, and removal mechanisms

There is a lack of comprehensive reviews tracking emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) within the soil-plant continuum using the source-pathway-receptor-impact-mitigation (SPRIM) framework. Therefore, this review examines existing literature to gain insights into the occurrence, behaviour, fate, health hazards, and strategies for mitigating EOCs within the soil-plant system. EOCs identified in the soil-plant system encompass endocrine-disrupting chemicals, surfactants, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, plasticizers, gasoline additives, flame retardants, and per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Sources of EOCs in the soil-plant system include the land application of biosolids, wastewater, and solid wastes rich in EOCs. However, less-studied sources encompass plastics and atmospheric deposition. EOCs are transported from their sources to the soil-plant system and other receptors through human activities, wind-driven processes, and hydrological pathways. The behaviour, persistence, and fate of EOCs within the soil-plant system are discussed, including sorption, degradation, phase partitioning, (bio)transformation, biouptake, translocation, and bioaccumulation in plants. Factors governing the behaviour, persistence, and fate of EOCs in the soil-plant system include pH, redox potential, texture, temperature, and soil organic matter content. The review also discusses the environmental receptors of EOCs, including their exchange with other environmental compartments (aquatic and atmospheric), and interactions with soil organisms. The ecological health risks, human exposure via inhalation of particulate matter and consumption of contaminated food, and hazards associated with various EOCs in the soil-plant system are discussed. Various mitigation measures including removal technologies of EOCs in the soil are discussed. Finally, future research directions are presented.

Occurrence, spatiotemporal trends, fate, and treatment technologies for microplastics and organic contaminants in biosolids: A review

This review provides a comprehensive overview of the occurrence, fate, treatment and multi-criteria analysis of microplastics (MPs) and organic contaminants (OCs) in biosolids. A meta-analysis was complementarily analysed through the literature to map out the occurrence and fate of MPs and 10 different groups of OCs. The data demonstrate that MPs (54.7% occurrence rate) and linear alkylbenzene sulfonate surfactants (44.2% occurrence rate) account for the highest prevalence of contaminants in biosolids. In turn, dioxin, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and phosphorus flame retardants (PFRs) have the lowest rates (<0.01%). The occurrence of several OCs (e.g., dioxin, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, pharmaceutical and personal care products, ultraviolet filters, phosphate flame retardants) in Europe appear at higher rates than in Asia and the Americas. However, MP concentrations in biosolids from Australia are reported to be 10 times higher than in America and Europe, which required more measurement data for in-depth analysis. Amongst the OC groups, brominated flame retardants exhibited exceptional sorption to biosolids with partitioning coefficients (log Kd) higher than 4. To remove these contaminants from biosolids, a wide range of technologies have been developed. Our multicriteria analysis shows that anaerobic digestion is the most mature and practical. Thermal treatment is a viable option; however, it still requires additional improvements in infrastructure, legislation, and public acceptance.

Bisphenol A contamination in aquatic environments: a review of sources, environmental concerns, and microbial remediation

The production of polycarbonate, a high-performance transparent plastic, employs bisphenol A, which is a prominent endocrine-disrupting compound. Polycarbonates are frequently used in the manufacturing of food, bottles, storage containers for newborns, and beverage packaging materials. Global production of BPA in 2022 was estimated to be in the region of 10 million tonnes. About 65-70% of all bisphenol A is used to make polycarbonate plastics. Bisphenol A leaches from improperly disposed plastic items and enters the environment through wastewater from plastic-producing industries, contaminating, sediments, surface water, and ground water. The concentration BPA in industrial and domestic wastewater ranges from 16 to 1465 ng/L while in surface water it has been detected 170-3113 ng/L. Wastewater treatment can be highly effective at removing BPA, giving reductions of 91-98%. Regardless, the remaining 2-9% of BPA will continue through to the environment, with low levels of BPA commonly observed in surface water and sediment in the USA and Europe. The health effects of BPA have been the subject of prolonged public and scientific debate, with PubMed listing more than 17,000 scientific papers as of 2023. Bisphenol A poses environmental and health hazards in aquatic systems, affecting ecosystems and human health. While several studies have revealed its presence in aqueous streams, environmentally sound technologies should be explored for its removal from the contaminated environment. Concern is mostly related to its estrogen-like activity, although it can interact with other receptor systems as an endocrine-disrupting chemical. Present review article encompasses the updated information on sources, environmental concerns, and sustainable remediation techniques for bisphenol A removal from aquatic ecosystems, discussing gaps, constraints, and future research requirements.

Industrial pilot scale slow pyrolysis reduces the content of organic contaminants in sewage sludge

Pyrolysis has been gaining global interest as a viable option for reducing organic contaminant levels in waste materials such as sewage sludge (SS) for their subsequent use as a soil amendment. However, publicly available knowledge on the capacity of pyrolysis to reduce the levels in SSs is mostly based on laboratory or bench scale studies. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of industrial pilot scale slow pyrolysis at two temperatures and retention times (450 °C, 1 h and 500 °C, 1.5 h) on a wide range of organic and inorganic contaminants in SSs. Pyrolysis at 500 °C decreased the concentrations of the detected per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs, by 30-93 %), brominated diphenyl ethers (BDEs; by 97-98 %) and most endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs, by 82-96 %) more efficiently than pyrolysis at 450 °C. Estrone and pharmaceuticals, with the exception of paracetamol, were removed to below quantification limits. Non-volatile inorganic contaminants concentrated to the chars (22-46 % increase). These results confirm that slow pyrolysis has the capacity to significantly reduce organic contaminant levels in SSs at an industrial scale, while content of inorganic contaminants depends mainly on the feedstock properties. Pyrolysis temperature of over 500 °C is advised to secure efficient removal of organic contaminants. However, it is anticipated that reactor design with good heat transfer and volatile removal could further improve the removal of organic contaminants from SSs. The results are especially valuable for sludge management operators planning to procure a pyrolysis plant.

Exposure to bisphenol A alternatives bisphenol AF and fluorene-9-bisphenol induces gonadal injuries in male zebrafish

Bisphenol A (BPA), present in many household products, can damage the male reproductive system. Accordingly, we summarized urine samples from 6921 human in National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and found urinary BPA levels were inversely linked with blood testosterone in the children group. Currently, BPA replacements, such as fluorene-9-bisphenol (BHPF) and Bisphenol AF (BPAF), have been introduced to produce "BPA-free" products. Here we demonstrated that BPAF and BHPF could induce delayed gonadal migration and reduce the number of progenitors of germ cell lineage in zebrafish larvae. A close receptor analysis study reveals that BHPF and BPAF can strongly bind to androgen receptors, leading to the downregulation of meiosis-related genes and the overexpression of inflammatory markers. Furthermore, BPAF and BPHF can induce activation of the gonadal axis via negative feedback, leading to the hypersecretion of some upstream hormones and an increase in the expression of upstream hormone receptors. Our findings call for further research on the toxicological effects of BHPF and BPAF on human health and recommend that BPA replacements be investigated for anti-estrogenic action.

Characteristics of Solidified Carbon Dioxide and Perspectives for Its Sustainable Application in Sewage Sludge Management

Appropriate management is necessary to mitigate the environmental impacts of wastewater sludge. One lesser-known technology concerns the use of solidified CO₂ for dewatering, sanitization, and digestion improvement. Solidified CO₂ is a normal byproduct of natural gas treatment processes and can also be produced by dedicated biogas upgrading technologies. The way solidified CO₂ is sourced is fully in line with the principles of the circular economy and carbon dioxide mitigation. The aim of this review is to summarize the current state of knowledge on the production and application of solid CO₂ in the pretreatment and management of sewage sludge. Using solidified CO₂ for sludge conditioning causes effective lysis of microbial cells, which destroys activated sludge flocs, promotes biomass fragmentation, facilitates efficient dispersion of molecular associations, modifies cell morphology, and denatures macromolecules. Solidified CO₂ can be used as an attractive tool to sanitize and dewater sludge and as a pretreatment technology to improve methane digestion and fermentative hydrogen production. Furthermore, it can also be incorporated into a closed CO₂ cycle of biogas production-biogas upgrading-solidified CO₂ production-sludge disintegration-digestion-biogas production. This feature not only bolsters the technology's capacity to improve the performance and cost-effectiveness of digestion processes, but can also help reduce atmospheric CO₂ emissions, a crucial advantage in terms of environment protection. This new approach to solidified CO₂ generation and application largely counteracts previous limitations, which are mainly related to the low cost-effectiveness of the production process.

An Assessment of Mass Flows, Removal and Environmental Emissions of Bisphenols in a Sequencing Batch Reactor Wastewater Treatment Plant

This study analyzed 16 bisphenols (BPs) in wastewater and sludge samples collected from different stages at a municipal wastewater treatment plant based on sequencing batch reactor technology. It also describes developing an analytical method for determining BPs in the solid phase of activated sludge based on solid-phase extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Obtained concentrations are converted into mass flows, and the biodegradation of BPs and adsorption to primary and secondary sludge are determined. Ten of the sixteen BPs were present in the influent with concentrations up to 434 ng L^-1 (BPS). Only five BPs with concentrations up to 79 ng L^-1 (BPA) were determined in the plant effluent, accounting for 8 % of the total BPs determined in the influent. Eleven per cent of the total BPs were adsorbed on primary and secondary sludge. Overall, BPs biodegradation efficiency was 81%. The highest daily emissions via effluent release (1.48 g day^-1) and sludge disposal (4.63 g day^-1) were for BPA, while total emissions reached 2 g day^-1 via effluent and 6 g day^-1 via sludge disposal. The data show that the concentrations of BPs in sludge are not negligible, and their environmental emissions should be monitored and further studied.

The molecular characteristics of DOMs derived from bio-stabilized wastewater activated sludge and its effect on alleviating Cd-stress in rice seedlings (Oryza sativa L.)

To recycle fertilizing contents in wastewater activated sludge (WAS) is attracting increasing interest. Dissolved organic matters (DOMs) in WAS with high content are biologically active. In this work, the molecular composition of DOMs derived from two typical bio-stabilized WAS (DOM_BWS), aerobic composting (DOM_ACS) and anaerobic digestion (DOM_ADS), were analyzed. The mitigative effect and molecular mechanisms of DOM_BWS on rice seedlings (Oryza sativa L.) under Cd-stress were investigated. Our study indicated that DOM_BWS significantly alleviated Cd-stress and facilitated growth recovery of rice seedlings with distinct absorption mechanisms. DOM_ACS, primarily composed of CHO class with low molecular weight rich in carboxyl groups, forming labile Cd-DOM complexes, which promoted Cd-absorption of rice seedlings. While DOM_ADS comprised large molecular weight of CHON class interacted with Cd to produce stable macromolecular complexes in the form of microaggregates, consequently reducing Cd-absorption. At transcriptional level, DOM_BWS restored auxin signal transduction and phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathways in root cells, and got the expression of glutathione S-transferase well. Besides, DOM_ACS significantly promoted the metabolism of amino acids to alleviate phytotoxicity, while DOM_ADS improved the DNA repair function of rice seedlings. These findings provided novel insights into land-use of bio-stabilized WAS for remediation of heavy metals contaminated soils and food security.

Transformation and fate of pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances during aerobic digestion of anaerobically digested sludge

Post-anaerobic aerobic digestion (PAAD) is a promising strategy to further reduce the volume and improve the quality of anaerobically digested sludge (ADS). However, the effect of PAAD process on the fate of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) remains largely unknown. In this study, fourteen PPCPs and fifteen PFAS were detected in ADS and evaluated regarding their fate and transformation in a laboratory aerobic digester operated with a hydraulic retention time of 13 days under 22 ℃. Twelve PPCPs demonstrated significant (p < 0.05) decrease in their total concentrations (dissolved and adsorbed fractions combined) with six compounds presenting substantial transformation (> 80%) after aerobic digestion. On the contrary, PFAS were not removed and their concentrations were either increased (increasing ratio: 91 - 571%) or consistent in the sludge during PAAD process, suggesting their recalcitrance to post aerobic digestion. More than half of PPCPs and PFAS demonstrated medium to strong sorption onto solids with their solid fraction higher than 50% in the ADS. After PAAD process, sorption of four PPCPs and three PFAAs to solids was enhanced in sludge.

Surfactant Pollution, an Emerging Threat to Ecosystem: Approaches for Effective Bacterial Degradation

The use of surfactants in households and industries is inevitable and so is their discharge into the environment, especially into the water bodies as effluents. Being surface-active agents, their utilization is mostly seen in soaps, detergents, personal care products, emulsifiers, wetting agents, etc. Anionic surfactants are the most used class. These surfactants are responsible for the foam and froth in the water bodies and cause potential adverse effects to both biotic and abiotic components of the ecosystem. Surfactants are capable of penetrating the cell membrane and thus cause toxicity to living organisms. Accumulation of these compounds has been known to cause significant gill damage and loss of sight in fish. Alteration of physiological and biochemical parameters of water decreases the amount of dissolved oxygen and thus affecting the entire ecosystem. Microbes utilizing surfactants as substrates for energy form the basis of the biodegradation of these compounds. The main organisms for surfactant biodegradation, both in sewage and natural waters, are bacteria. Several Pseudomonas and Bacillus spp. have shown efficient degradation of anionic surfactants namely: sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), linear alkylbenzene sulphonate (LAS), sodium dodecylbenzenesulphonate (SDBS). Also, several microbial consortia constituting Alcaligenes spp., Citrobacter spp., etc. have shown efficacy in the degradation of surfactants. The biodegradation efficiency studies of these microbes/microbial consortia would be of immense help in formulating better solutions for the bioremediation of surfactants and help to reduce their potential environmental hazards.

Effects of anionic hydrocarbon surfactant on the transport of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in natural soils

The widespread usage of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) has led to their ubiquitous co-existence with hydrocarbon surfactants in the subsurface environment. In this study, column experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of an anionic hydrocarbon surfactant (sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, SDBS, 1 and 10 mg/L) on the transport of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in two saturated natural soils under different cation type (Na⁺ and Ca²⁺) conditions. Results showed that SDBS (10 mg/L) significantly enhanced the transport of PFOA in two soils. This was likely because SDBS had a stronger adsorption affinity to the soils than PFOA, and can outcompete PFOA for the finite adsorption sites on the soil surface. The effect of SDBS on PFOA transport varied greatly in the two soils. More negatively charged soil surface and greater soil particle size likely contributed to the more noticeable transport-enhancement of PFOA resulting from the presence of SDBS. Also, the enhancement effect of SDBS (10 mg/L) with Ca²⁺ on PFOA transport was more significantly than that with Na⁺. This was possibly due to the blocking effect of SDBS to the more positively charged soil surface induced by Ca²⁺. Findings of this study point out the importance of anionic hydrocarbon surfactants on PFOA transport when assessing its environmental risks and implementing remediation efforts.

Concentration profiles of a typical ultraviolet filter benzophenone-3 and its derivatives in municipal sewage sludge in China: Risk assessment in sludge-amended soil

The widespread occurrence of benzophenones in various environmental matrices is a public health concern due to their endocrine-disrupting effects. Nevertheless, information on the exposure and health risk of benzophenones derived from sludge-amended soil is scarce. Herein, we measured a typical ultraviolet filter benzophenone-3 (BP-3) and its four derivatives in sewage sludges from different regions of China. BP-3 was the most abundant benzophenone analog in sludge (range: 0.581-305 ng/g dw), whereas no difference was found for BP-3 in sludge from different regions (p > 0.05). The sum concentration range of the four BP-3 derivatives in sludge was 0.128-74.2 ng/g dw. The mass loading and per capita daily release were calculated to determine the environmental release of benzophenones. The highest mass loading of benzophenones was found in Eastern China (20.9 kg/yr), followed by Northeast China (8.41 kg/yr) and Northwest China (8.13 kg/yr). The per capita daily release value of benzophenones via sludge was estimated as 100 ng/day/person. Calculation of the risk quotients (RQs) of BP-3 and its derivatives showed that benzophenones in sludge-amended soils had low environmental risks (RQs < 0.1) in all geographic regions. This nationwide study provides information outlining the environmental release of benzophenones through sludge composting and potential ecological risk from sludge-amended soil.

PFAS in soil and groundwater following historical land application of biosolids

The land application of digested sewage sludge (biosolids) is widely employed across the globe. Studies show that biosolids contain significant amounts of inorganic and organic materials, as well as emerging pollutants, including per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS). With the wide range of pollutants commonly reported in biosolids, the potential risks associated with long-term land application operations are concerning. In this study, PFAS in surface soils, deeper soils into the vadose zone, and immediately-underlying groundwater was measured at an agricultural station with a long record of biosolids applications plus irrigation using treated wastewater. Twelve PFAS homologues were detected in every near surface soil sampled 0-30 cm depth below ground surface with multiple PFAS (especially short-chain) distributed through the soil profile. Average measured concentrations of PFAS in these soils suggest the soil burden PFOS>PFDA>PFOA for all substations sampled, independent of the historical loading rates and patterns of agricultural operations on those substations. Measured concentrations of PFOA and PFOS in the soil profile (0-90 cm) suggest these compounds have migrated to deeper soil depths (up to 9 m below the surface) with quantifiable concentrations in the soil and the immediate underlying groundwater located approximately 17 m below. Estimates of the total mass of PFAS in surface soils were effectively made using PFAS levels reported in sludges from the USEPA NSSS combined with long-term loading rates on record at the substations. With the land application of biosolids in the USA regulated by the USEPA, additional and updated risk assessments and surveys to include emerging pollutants such as PFAS are needed to protect public health and the environment.

Assessment of exposure to perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in dogs by fur analysis

Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a large group of chemicals commonly used in various branches of industry, which may adversely affect the living organisms. The aim of this study were to evaluate exposure of dogs to six selected PFASs: five perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (perfluorobutanoic acid - PFBuA, perfluoropentanoic acid - PFPeA, perfluorohexanoic acid - PFHxA, perfluoroheptanoic acid - PFHpA, perfluorooctanoic acid - PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) through the analysis of fur samples. To our knowledge this is the first study concerning the use of fur samples to evaluation of exposure of domestic animals to PFASs. Relationship between PFASs concentration and age, gender and body weight of animals was also evaluated. Fur samples were collected from 30 dogs living in Olsztyn (Poland). All PFASs studied were detected in the canine fur samples. The highest concentrations were observed in the case of PFOA and PFBuA, detected at concentrations in the range between 1.51 and 66.7 ng/g and 0.98-26.6 ng/g, respectively. During the present study generally no statistically significant differences dependent on gender, age and body weight of animals were found. This study confirms the suitability of fur samples for biomonitoring of exposure to PFASs in domestic animals, what may be important in veterinary toxicology.

Determination and occurrence of bisphenol A and thirteen structural analogs in soil

Bisphenol A is a phenolic plasticizer used in the production of various plastic products. Its endocrine-disrupting effects on ecological and human health lead to replacement with its structural analogs. The occurrence of these analogs in the soil environment, which is an important sink for bisphenols, has been rarely reported. In this study, a robust method was developed to determine bisphenol A and 13 analogs in soil using accelerated solvent extraction combined with in-line purification for fast and efficient extraction and ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry for simultaneous and accurate quantification. The method detection limits of 14 bisphenols were between 0.01 and 0.39 ng g^-1, and the recoveries were in the range of 80%-120%. The developed method was applied to 29 agricultural and urban soil samples from 21 provinces in China, and 12 bisphenols were detected. Among them, the contents of bisphenol A, F, and P were up to 166.0, 212.9, and 78.2 ng g^-1 dry weight, respectively. The maximum concentration of bisphenol P was at least ten times higher than literature values in food and other environmental matrices. The results of this study showed that "hot spots" existed for bisphenol pollution in soil and that further investigations were necessary to avoid regrettable substitutions.

Influence of bisphenol A occurrence in wastewaters on biomass characteristics and activated sludge process performance

In this work, the influence of bisphenol A (BPA) on biological wastewater treatment was studied. For it, two sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were operated for three months. Both SBRs were fed with synthetic wastewater (SW), adding 1 mg·L^-1 of BPA into the feed of reactor SBR-BPA, while the other one operated without BPA as a control reactor (SBR-B). In addition, batch experiments were performed with adapted and non-adapted activated sludge, simulating the reaction step of SBR-BPA, to determine the pathways for BPA removal. Results of batch experiments showed that adsorption and biodegradation were the only significant BPA removal routes. BPA removal by biodegradation was more efficient when adapted biomass was used in the tests (32.2% and 8.2% with adapted and non-adapted biomass, respectively), while BPA adsorption removal route was similar in both types of activated sludge (around 40%). Regarding the SBRs experiments, after 16 days no BPA concentration was detected in SBR-BPA effluent. In the adaptation process, SBR-BPA biomass was more sensitive to low temperatures resulting in higher effluent turbidity, COD and soluble microbial products concentrations than in SBR-B. However, once temperature increased, adapted biomass from SBR-BPA presented higher activity than SBR-B biomass, showing higher values of sludge production, microbial hydrolytic enzymatic activities and specific dynamic respiration rate. The bacterial community study revealed the increase of abundance of Proteobacteria (especially Thiothrix species) and Actinobacteria (especially Nocardioides species) phyla at the expense of Bacteroidetes and Chloroflexi phyla in SBR-BPA during its operation.

Fate and biodegradation characteristics of triclocarban in wastewater treatment plants and sewage sludge composting processes and risk assessment after entering the ecological environment

Triclocarban (TCC) has a high detection frequency in soil, rivers, sediments, and organisms, and its ecological risks have attracted substantial attention. In this study, we analyzed the fate of TCC in four wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Zhengzhou, China, the biodegradation characteristics during the composting process, and the ecological risks of TCC when entering different environmental compartments. The concentration of TCC in the influent was 731.1-812.4 ng/L. More than 53.4% of TCC was biodegraded during the wastewater treatment process, and less than 2.5% was retained in the effluent. TCC was effectively removed through microbial degradation and sewage sludge absorption, and there were only minor differences in the different wastewater treatment processes. It is worth noting that more than 38% of TCC was enriched in sewage sludge (1430.1-1663.8 ng/g). The corresponding biodegradation rates of TCC were 65.7% and 82.8% in sewage sludge after 17 days of composting treatment with sawdust and straw as bulking agents, respectively. The estimated results showed that effluent discharge into the city rivers was safe. Composting could effectively degrade TCC and decrease the ecological risk of TCC when applied to sewage sludge.

The comparative toxicities of BPA, BPB, BPS, BPF, and BPAF on the reproductive neuroendocrine system of zebrafish embryos and its mechanisms

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a well-known endocrine disruptor that has elicited great concern because of its potential toxic effects in organisms. In this study, the effects of BPA and several BPA structural analogs, including BPB, BPS, BPF, and BPAF, on the reproductive neuroendocrine system were evaluated during zebrafish embryonic and larval development. Our results showed that the numbers of gonadotropin-releasing hormone 3 neurons in zebrafish embryos increased after 100 μg/L BPA analog treatment, and exposure to BPA or its analogs at 1 or 100 μg/L increased the expression of reproductive neuroendocrine-related genes and the levels of typical hormones such as LH, FSH, E2, and GH. Moreover, the effects were associated with increases in the activities of erα, erβ, and cyp19a genes. The respective estrogen receptors (ER) and aromatase (AROM) antagonists significantly attenuated the stimulation of lhβ, fshβ, LH, and FSH expression, thereby proving that BPA analogs affect the reproductive neuroendocrine system via ERs and AROM pathway. Furthermore, we observed that the reproductive neuroendocrine toxicity of BPAF was more similar to that of BPA. This was the first study to comparatively explore the reproductive neuroendocrine toxicities of bisphenols in aquatic organism.

Environmental Distribution of Personal Care Products and Their Effects on Human Health

Personal care products (PCPs) are generally used for personal hygiene, cleaning, grooming, and beautification. These include hair and skin care products, baby care products, UV blocking creams, facial cleansers, insect repellents, perfumes, fragrances, soap, detergents, shampoos, conditioners, toothpaste, etc., thus exposing humans easily. Personal preferences related to PCPs usage frequency are highly variable and depend on socioeconomic status and lifestyle factors. The increasing availability and diversity of PCPs from the retailer outlets consequently result in higher loading of PCPs into wastewater systems and, therefore, the environment. These compounds persistently and continuously release biologically active and inactive ingredients in the atmosphere, biosphere, geosphere, and demonstrating adverse effects on human, wild, and marine life. Advanced techniques such as granular activated carbon filtration and algae-based system may help biotransformation and remove PCP contaminants from water with improved efficiency. Additionally, harmony among PCPs related regulations of different countries may encourage standard checks to control their manufacturing, sale, and distribution across the borders to ensure consumers' safety. Furthermore, all intended ingredients, their concentrations, and instructions for frequency of use as per age groups may be clearly labeled on packages of PCPs. In conclusion, the emerging environmental contaminants of PCPs and their association with the growing risks of negative effects on human health and globally on the environment emphasize the chemical-free simple lifestyle.

Occurrence of the main metabolites of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in sludge stabilization treatments

In Europe, approximately 40% of sludge yearly produced in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is applied in agricultural lands as organic amendment, especially in arid regions. Sludge tends to concentrate wastewater pollutants. Many of them are not removed by sludge stabilization treatments and, as a result, they could originate adverse effects on soils, vegetation, animals, and humans. Although sludge stabilization treatments play an important role in removal contaminants from sludge and, therefore, in preventing contaminant discharges onto soils, there is scarce information about the occurrence of these compounds in these treatments. This fact is especially acute for emerging pollutants and, particularly, their metabolites. In this work, seven pharmaceuticals and personal care products, and their main metabolites, have been monitored in five different stabilization treatments: anaerobic and aerobic digestion, dehydration, composting, and lagooning. Sixteen compounds were measured in the analysed samples. Their distribution was similar in primary sludge, in spite of the different geographic locations of the WWTPs, The distribution was in accordance with the metabolic ratios of most of the studied compounds. Different behaviour was observed depending on the compound, for example, CBZ, 3-OH-CBZ, DIC, and 4-OH-DIC were highly persistent in all studied stabilization technologies whereas CAF, PX showed high degradability. Most of the studied compounds were measured in the final product of the sludge stabilization processes evaluated. This fact shows the necessity to improve the knowledge about the presence of these compounds in sludge intended to be applied onto soil and about the potential ecotoxicological risks of these compounds.
