A comprehensive review of biogeochemical distribution and fractionation of lead isotopes for source tracing in distinct interactive environmental compartments

Elevated lead mobility in sediments of a eutrophic drinking water reservoir during spring and summer seasons: Insights from isotopic signatures

Lead (Pb) pollution in sediments remains a major concern for ecosystem quality due to the robust interaction at the sediment/water interface, particularly in shallow lakes. However, understanding the mechanism behind seasonal fluctuations in Pb mobility in these sediments is lacking. Here, the seasonal variability of Pb concentration and isotopic ratio were investigated in the uppermost sediments of a shallow eutrophic drinking lake located in southeast China. Results reveal a sharp increase in labile Pb concentration during autumn-winter period, reaching ∼ 3-fold higher levels than during the spring-summer seasons. Despite these fluctuations, there was a notable overlap in the Pb isotopic signatures within the labile fraction across four seasons, suggesting that anthropogenic sources are not responsible for the elevated labile Pb concentration in autumn-winter seasons. Instead, the abnormally elevated labile Pb concentration during autumn-winter was probably related to reduction dissolution of Fe/Mn oxides, while declined labile Pb concentration during spring-summer may be attributed to adsorption/precipitation of Fe/Mn oxides. These large seasonal changes imply the importance of considering seasonal effects when conducting sediment sampling. We further propose a solution that using Pb isotopic signatures within the labile fraction instead of the bulk sediment can better reflect the information of anthropogenic Pb sources.

The formation of multi-metal(loid)s contaminated groundwater at smelting site: Critical role of natural colloids

The occurrence and migration of colloids at smelting sites are crucial for the formation of multi-metal(loid)s pollution in groundwater. In this study, the behavior of natural colloids (1 nm-0.45 µm) at an abandoned smelting site was investigated by analyzing groundwater samples filtered through progressively decreasing pore sizes. Smelting activities in this site had negatively impacted the groundwater quality, leading to elevated concentrations of zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), arsenic (As), and cadmium (Cd). The results showed that heavy metal(loid)-bearing colloids were ubiquitous in the groundwater with the larger colloidal fractions (∼75 -450 nm) containing higher abundances of pollutants. It was also observed that the predominant colloids consisted of Zn-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH), sphalerite, kaolinite, and hematite. By employing multiple analytical techniques, including leaching experiments, soil colloid characterization, and Pb stable isotope measurements, the origin of groundwater colloids was successfully traced to the topsoil colloids. Most notably, our findings highlighted the increased risk of heavy metal(loid)s migration from polluted soils into adjacent sites through the groundwater because of colloid-mediated transport of contaminants. This field-scale investigation provides valuable insights into the geochemical processes governing heavy metal(loid) behavior as well as offering pollution remediation strategies specifically tailored for contaminated groundwater.

Geochemical fractionation of iron in paper industry and municipal landfill soils: Ecological and health risks insights

Industrial processes and municipal wastes largely contribute to the fluctuations in iron (Fe) content in soils. Fe, when present in unfavorable amount, causes harmful effects on human, flora, and fauna. The present study is an attempt to evaluate the composition of Fe in surface soils from paper mill and municipal landfill sites and assess their potential ecological and human health risks. Geochemical fractionation was conducted to explore the chemical bonding of Fe across different fractions, i.e., water-soluble (F1) to residual (F6). Different contamination factors and pollution indices were evaluated to comprehend Fe contamination extent across the study area. Results indicated the preference for less mobile forms in the paper mill and landfill, with 26.66% and 43.46% of Fe associated with the Fe-Mn oxide bound fraction (F4), and 57.22% and 24.78% in the residual fraction (F6). Maximum mobility factor (MF) of 30.65% was observed in the paper mill, and 80.37% in the landfill. The enrichment factor (EF) varied within the range of 20 < EF < 40, signifying a high level of enrichment in the soil. The individual contamination factor (ICF) ranged from 0 to >6, highlighting low to high contamination. Adults were found to be more vulnerable towards Fe associated health risks compared to children. The Hazard Quotient (HQ) index showed the highest risk potential pathways as dermal contact > ingestion > inhalation. The study offers insights into potential Fe contamination risks in comparable environments, underscoring the crucial role of thorough soil assessments in shaping land use and waste management policies.

Source-oriented risk assessment of heavy metal(loid)s in agricultural soils around a multimetal smelting area near the Yellow River, China

Heavy metal(loid) (HM) contamination in agricultural soils, particularly in areas severely impacted by smelting industries, has attracted worldwide attention. In this study, agricultural soils were collected in a flourishing multimetal smelting area near the Yellow River in central China. By an integrated approach encompassing the positive matrix factorization model, ordinary kriging interpolation and hierarchical clustering analysis (PMF-OK-HC), a total of four major sources and their mass contributions were identified, namely, soil parent material (56.6%), industrial waste and Mo smelting (24.0%), metal smelting and traffic emissions (12.8%), and coal combustion (6.7%). On this basis, the health risk of HMs was evaluated by Monte Carlo simulations and showed that a higher risk, with a higher proportion of exceeding-thresholds risk, was observed for children than for adults in terms of both noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks. Exposure pathways of oral ingestion in children could result in a higher attributed risk than other pathways. Furthermore, source-oriented risk assessment (SORA) revealed that the sources of coal combustion, industrial waste and Mo smelting had the highest contributions to noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks. Overall, for effective environmental management in agricultural soil, the framework of SORA was verified as an effective tool in the identification of the priority control of HMs and their sources.

Coupling isotopic signatures and partial extraction method to examine lead pollution in mangrove sediments

Elevated lead (Pb) has been widely observed in mangrove sediments due to human activities, yet understanding the sources of Pb in these sediments and the factors influencing Pb accumulation is challenging. Here, we combined Pb isotopes with partial extraction methods to study Pb contamination levels in mangrove sediments from the eastern and western parts of the Maowei Sea, China. Our results showed that the Pb in the leachate and residual fraction was mainly from anthropogenic and natural sources, respectively. The use of 204Pb isotope analysis can reveal some overlooked differences between anthropogenic and natural sources. Calculation by Bayesian mixing model showed no significant difference in the total anthropogenic contribution between the two sites, but the relative contribution of each end member differed. The contribution of Pb/Zn ores was much higher in the eastern sites (30.9 ± 5.1%) than in the west (18.4 ± 5.5%), while that of agricultural activities was much lower in the east (5.2 ± 3.1%) than in the west (13.5 ± 4.6%). The elevated anthropogenic Pb accumulation in mangrove sediments was ascribed to organic matter. This study provides more data on Pb isotopic composition and new insights into Pb biogeochemistry in the mangrove environment.

Analytical study on heavy metal output fluxes and source apportionment of a non-ferrous smelter in southwest China

Abandoned Pb/Zn smelters are often accompanied by a large amount of smelting slag, which is a serious environmental problem. Previous studies have demonstrated that slag deposits pose an environmental threat even if the smelters are shut down. Herein, a Pb/Zn smelter and its impacted zone in GeJiu, Yunnan, China were selected as the study area. The risk and source apportionment of heavy metals (HMs) in the soil of the impacted zone were systematically studied. Based on the hydrogeological features, the migration path and output fluxes of the HMs released from smelting slag to the impacted zone were investigated. The HM contents (Cd, As, Zn, Pb, and Cu) in the soil substantially exceeded the screening values of the Chinese soil standard (GB15618-2018). Based on the results of the Pb isotopic and statistical analyses for source apportionment, the contaminated sites and agricultural irrigation water had a large impact on the HMs of soil. The hydrological analysis results showed that runoff, as an HM migration path under rainfall, continued to affect the environment. The water balance calculations using the Hydrologic Evaluation of Landfill Performance model showed that the rainfall was distributed on site as follows: evaporation (57.35%), runoff (32.63%), and infiltration (10.02%). Finally, the output fluxes were calculated in combination with the leaching experiment. As, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Cu runoff had the output fluxes of 6.1 × 10^-3, 4.2 × 10^-3, 4.1, 1.4 × 10^-2, and 7.2 × 10^-4 mg/kg/y, and infiltration of 1.9 × 10^-3, 1.3 × 10^-3, 1.3, 4.0 × 10^-4, and 2.2 × 10^-4 mg/kg/y, respectively. Therefore, this study offers theoretical and scientific recommendations for effective environmental management and engineering remediation.

Complexities in attributing lead contamination to specific sources in an industrial area of Philadelphia, PA

Globally, lead (Pb) contamination is one of the top ten chemical exposure issues affecting public health. The identification of specific Pb sources provides valuable information to determine assignment of liability for site cleanup, improve sampling plans and develop remedial strategies. This paper examines Pb concentrations and Pb isotopic data from samples collected at and near the site of a Pb paint production facility with a long operating history. Although high soil Pb concentrations were found at the site, Pb concentrations in surrounding neighborhoods did not simply decline with distance from the site. We evaluated soil concentrations and isotopic mixing lines to explore potential sources of Pb pollution. Three-isotope plots showed overlap of site samples and the surrounding neighborhood, consistent with pollution from the facility affecting offsite soils. A major challenge in separation of potential sources, however, is that the isotopic signatures of other potential Pb sources fall within the range of the soil data. The long operational site history, soil disturbances, the presence of nearby smelters, and other local and remote sources affect identification of lead sources. This analysis demonstrates that source attribution can be confounded by incomplete site and material sourcing information. An integrated approach that includes in-depth site characterization and an evaluation of historical activities (e.g., Pb ores used over time, amounts of Pb emitted by all area smelters, land use changes, and soil disturbances) is important for determining source attribution. This analysis provides insight into future site investigations where soil lead contamination has resulted from a long industrial history in an urban setting.

Slight transition in Chinese atmospheric Pb isotopic fingerprinting due to increasing foreign Pb

Atmospheric lead (Pb) pollution negatively affects human health and ecosystem, and extensive research is required to identify its sources and develop robust mitigation methods. In this study, the concentration and isotopic composition of Pb in fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) at five sites in the China's Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region were analyzed. The results showed that the Pb concentration in the BTH region declined along the northwest direction in winter owing to the East Asian monsoon. Pb isotopic signatures confirmed that anthropogenic activities significantly contributed to Pb pollution, compared with natural sources. With the increasing import of foreign Pb (with a relatively lower ²⁰⁸Pb/²⁰⁶Pb ratio) to China, we hypothesized that the unique isotopic signature of Pb in Chinese aerosols may decline over time. Therefore, the application of the isotopic approach for quantifying Pb transported from China should be carefully appraised in future research to provide a realistic estimate of the contribution of local sources and the transboundary effect consistent with air mass trajectories analysis. This study provides a theoretical reference for supporting the utilization of Δ²⁰⁸Pb values for better clarify the transboundary impact of Pb pollution and to reduce international disputes.

Spatial and temporal trends in δ66Zn and 206Pb/207Pb isotope ratios along a rural transect downwind from the Upper Silesian industrial area: Role of legacy vs. present-day pollution

Transect sampling is an under-exploited tool in isotope studies of atmospheric pollution. Few studies have combined Zn and Pb isotope ratios to investigate whether atmospheric pollution at a receptor site is dominated by a different anthropogenic source of each of these toxic elements. It has been also unclear whether pollution abatement strategies in Central Europe have already resulted in regionally well-mixed background isotope signature of atmospheric Zn and Pb. Zinc and lead isotope ratios were determined in snow collected along a rural transect downwind from the Upper Silesian industrial area (southern Poland). Spatial and temporal gradients in δ⁶⁶Zn and ²⁰⁶Pb/²⁰⁷Pb ratios at four sites were compared with those of ore and coal collected in eight Czech and Polish mining districts situated at distances of up to 500 km. Snow pollution was extremely high 8 km from Olkusz in 2011 (1670 μg Zn L^-1; 240 μg Pb L^-1), sharply decreased between 2011 and 2018, and remained low in 2019-2021. Snow pollution was lower at sites situated 28-68 km from Olkusz. Across study sites, mean δ⁶⁶Zn and ²⁰⁶Pb/²⁰⁷Pb ratios of snow were -0.13‰ and 1.155, respectively. With an increasing distance from Olkusz, the δ⁶⁶Zn values first increased and then decreased, while the ²⁰⁶Pb/²⁰⁷Pb ratios first decreased and then increased. The δ⁶⁶Zn values in snow plotted closer to those of Upper Silesian ores (-0.20‰) than to the δ⁶⁶Zn values of Upper Silesian stone coal (0.52‰), showing predominance of smelter-derived over power-plant derived Zn pollution. The ²⁰⁶Pb/²⁰⁷Pb ratios of Upper Silesian coal (1.171) and Upper Silesian ores (1.180) were higher compared to those of snow. A²⁰⁶Pb/²⁰⁷Pb vs.²⁰⁸Pb/²⁰⁷Pb plot identified legacy pollution from leaded gasoline as the low-radiogenic mixing end-member. Across the transect sites, only the last sampling campaign exhibited a high degree of isotope homogenization for both Zn and Pb.

Effects of hydrological connectivity project on heavy metals in Wuhan urban lakes on the time scale

Metal pollution in lakes threatens the ecological environment and human health. When environmental conditions change, heavy metals (HMs) in lake sediments can cause secondary pollution. At present, the implementation of the Hydrological Connectivity Project (HCP) is a significant means of lake governance. In this study, the accumulation, potential ecological risk, and sources of HMs in Four lakes (Houguan Lake, Tangxun Lake, Moshui Lake, and Chen Lake) in Wuhan city were compared before and after the completion of the HCP. The results indicated that the HCP reduced the enrichment factor of HMs and the potential ecological risk in the heavily polluted Moshui Lake but caused secondary pollution in the less polluted Houguan Lake. Moreover, the degree of purification of lakes that took a longer time to complete the HCP (Moshui Lake) was significantly higher than that of lakes with a shorter HCP completion time (Tangxun Lake). Water exchange caused by the HCP leading to exchange of the primary pollution source between Houguan Lake and Moshui Lake to a certain extent. This study provides a reference for evaluating the implementation effect of the HCP on HM pollution in lakes and for future governance planning.

Environmental behavior, human health effect, and pollution control of heavy metal(loid)s toward full life cycle processes

Heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) have caused serious environmental pollution and health risks. Although the past few years have witnessed the achievements of studies on environmental behavior of HMs, the related toxicity mechanisms, and pollution control, their relationship remains a mystery. Researchers generally focused on one topic independently without comprehensive considerations due to the knowledge gap between environmental science and human health. Indeed, the full life cycle control of HMs is crucial and should be reconsidered with the combination of the occurrence, transport, and fate of HMs in the environment. Therefore, we started by reviewing the environmental behaviors of HMs which are affected by a variety of natural factors as well as their physicochemical properties. Furthermore, the related toxicity mechanisms were discussed according to exposure route, toxicity mechanism, and adverse consequences. In addition, the current state-of-the-art of available technologies for pollution control of HMs wastewater and solid wastes were summarized. Finally, based on the research trend, we proposed that advanced in-operando characterizations will help us better understand the fundamental reaction mechanisms, and big data analysis approaches will aid in establishing the prediction model for risk management.

The Use of Pb Isotope Ratios to Determine Environmental Sources of High Blood Pb Concentrations in Children: A Feasibility Study in Georgia

The incidence of lead (Pb) poisoning in children in Georgia has been identified as a major health concern, with a recent national survey identifying that 41% of children aged 2-7 years had blood lead concentrations (BLCs) greater than the blood lead reference value (BLRV) of ≥5 µg dL^-1. This study collected samples of blood, spices, paint, soil, dust, flour, tea, toys, milk, and water from 36 households in Georgia where a child had previously been identified as having a BLC > BLRV. The Pb concentrations of these samples were determined and compared to Georgian reference values. Samples from 3 households were analysed for their Pb isotope composition. The Pb isotope composition of the environmental and blood samples were compared to identify the most likely source(s) of Pb exposure. This approach identified that some spice and dust samples were the likely sources of Pb in the blood in these cases. Importantly, some soil, paint, and dust sources with high Pb concentrations could be discounted as contributing to blood Pb based on their distinct isotope composition. The data presented demonstrate the significant contribution that Pb surveillance and Pb isotope ratio analyses can make to managing Pb exposure in regions where high BLCs are identified.

Morphological and Functional Alterations Induced by Two Ecologically Relevant Concentrations of Lead on Danio rerio Gills

Lead (Pb), due to its high toxicity and bioaccumulation tendency, is one of the top three pollutants of concern for both humans and wildlife and occupies second place in the Priority List of Hazardous Substances. In freshwater fish, Pb is mainly absorbed through the gills, where the greatest accumulation occurs. Despite the crucial role of gills in several physiological functions such as gas exchange, water balance, and osmoregulation, no studies evaluated the effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of Pb on this organ, and existing literature only refers to high levels of exposure. Herein we investigated for the first time the molecular and morphological effects induced by two low and environmentally relevant concentrations of Pb (2.5 and 5 μg/L) on the gills of Danio rerio, a model species with a high translational value for human toxicity. It was demonstrated that Pb administration at even low doses induces osmoregulatory dysfunctions by affecting Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase and AQP3 expression. It was also shown that Pb upregulates MTs as a protective response to prevent cell damage. Modulation of SOD confirms that the production of reactive oxygen species is an important toxicity mechanism of Pb. Histological and morphometric analysis revealed conspicuous pathological changes, both dose- and time-dependent.

Combination of UNMIX, PMF model and Pb-Zn-Cu isotopic compositions for quantitative source apportionment of heavy metals in suburban agricultural soils

Quantitative identification of heavy metals (HM) sources in soils is key to prevention and control of heavy metal pollution. In this study, UNMIX, PMF (Positive matrix factorization) model and Pb-Zn-Cu isotopic compositions were combined to quantitatively identify heavy metal sources in a suburban agricultural area of Kaifeng, China. Using multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) and ICP-MS, we measured Pb, Zn and Cu stable isotopic compositions, HM concentrations and HM chemical fractions in studied soils, as well as potential sources around the highly polluted site, including total suspended particle, compound fertilizer, irrigated river water and sediments. The results showed that total contents and chemical fractions of heavy metals, as well as Pb-Zn-Cu isotopic compositions presented great variation in different sites, which implied that heavy metal accumulation was obviously affected by local anthropogenic pollution source. UNMIX and PMF presented good agreement on source apportionment that industrial and agricultural activities (61.74% and 60.75% for UNMIX and PMF, respectively) were the major contributors to heavy metal accumulation in the study area. Especially, sewage irrigation and atmosphere deposition accounted for a large proportion (28.14% and 41.03% for UNMIX and PMF, respectively). Moreover, isotopic compositions of Pb, Zn and Cu in highly polluted soils and environment media gave further confirmation that sewage irrigation and atmosphere deposition were primary anthropogenic source. Therefore, combination of UNMIX, PMF model and Pb-Zn-Cu isotopic compositions showed good coordination in quantitative and specific source identification of heavy metals in agricultural soils.

Toxicity of Pb continuous and pulse exposure on intestinal anatomy, bacterial diversity, and metabolites of Pelophylax nigromaculatus in pre-hibernation

Amphibians are often exposed to pulse pollution due to fluctuational inputs of pollutants in water. Traditional ecotoxicology research is mainly performed under constant exposure conditions, which is not consistent with the true environmental pollution. Frogs are sensitive to changes in water pollutants in pre-hibernation. Thus, to understand the toxicity difference to continuous and pulse exposure in environmental concentrations of Pb (100 μg/L), Pelophylax nigromaculatus adults were exposed to short-term treatments (8 days) in pre-hibernation. Individual mortality, intestinal anatomical structure, bacterial diversity, and metabolites were measured in a control group (CON), a Pb continuous treatment group (CEPb) and a Pb pulse treatment group (PEPb). The results showed that PEPb significantly increased individual mortality, compared to the control group and CEPb. PEPb induced pathological changes in the small intestinal tissues, such as mucosal erosion, swollen and distorted villi, large vacuoles, and the proliferation of goblet cells. In addition, PEPb altered the structure and diversity of intestinal bacteria, resulting in an increase in some pathogenic bacteria (e.g. Bacteroides and Ruminococcus) and a decrease in beneficial bacteria (e.g. Cetobacterium and Akkermansia). Both CEPb and PEPb significantly changed intestinal metabolites and metabolic pathways. Moreover, PEPb has a significant effect on the metabolism of amino acids by increasing the content of 5-Aminopentanoic acid, cis-4-Hydroxy-l-proline, Glycocholic acid, l-Alanine, and l-Isoleucine. We concluded that PEPb may lead to intestine impairment of P. nigromaculatus in pre-hibernation by inducing intestinal structural integrity destruction, bacterial imbalance, and metabolic dysfunction, resulting in a significant increase in mortality. The study provides new insights for understanding the intestinal responses of frogs to pulse metal exposure.

The fate and contamination of trace metals in soils exposed to a railroad used by Diesel Multiple Units: Assessment of the railroad contribution with multi-tool source tracking

Soil samples from cut slopes from lightly loaded railway lines used by Diesel Multiple Units for 5 years in Gdansk (Poland) were collected and analyzed for trace metals (TMs): Zn, Pb, Cd, Ni, Cr, Cu, and Fe. The main aim was to assess soil enrichment, contamination status, and distribution of TMs relative to the distance from the railway track. Extensive source tracking analyses were performed using cluster analysis (CA) and the Pb isotope ratios approach (²⁰⁶Pb, ²⁰⁷Pb, and ²⁰⁸Pb). Soil samples were affected by Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn (max values in mg/kg d.w.: 31.1, 145, 80.5, and 115, respectively). The Enrichment Factor showed moderate (Cr, Zn, Pb) to very severe (Cu) enrichment. CA allowed TMs to be divided into two general groups: a) containing Zn, Pb, Cd with slight interaction with Cu; and b) containing Fe and Ni with slight interaction with Cr. Correlation analyses indicated Cr as an outlying TM delivered from a separate source associated with the specificity of the construction of railroad 248, where alloys containing Cr were used to counteract increasing wear-and-tear of the rails. Pb isotopic ratios in the ranges of 1.16-1.20 (²⁰⁶Pb/²⁰⁷Pb) and 2.05-2.10 (²⁰⁸Pb/²⁰⁶Pb) corresponded to anthropogenic supplementation (coal combustion, road vehicles, and railroad transport) of Pb and Pb-correlated TMs (Zn, Cd, and partly Cu). Despite the research focus on the impact of the railroad contribution, a comparison with other forms of transport indicated that road transport appeared to have a higher contributing factor to TM pollution at the investigated site. This general conclusion again emphasizes the lower environmental footprint exhibited by railway transport in comparison to road transport.

Lead Isotope Evidence for Enhanced Anthropogenic Particle Transport to the Himalayas during Summer Months

The Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) is one of the most highly polluted regions of the world, yet the temporal pattern of transport of anthropogenic aerosols from this region to the Himalayas is poorly constrained. On the basis of the seasonal variation of planetary boundary layer heights, air mass back trajectory analysis, and year-long time-series data for ²⁰⁸Pb/²⁰⁴Pb, ²⁰⁷Pb/²⁰⁴Pb, ²⁰⁶Pb/²⁰⁴Pb, and ¹⁴³Nd/¹⁴⁴Nd from aerosols collected over a high-altitude station, we demonstrate that anthropogenic Pb transport to the glacierized catchment has a seasonal pattern. The Pb isotope data reveal that during winter, the thinned boundary layer traps up to 10 ± 7% more coal-derived Pb in the IGP. In contrast, in nonwinter months, a thicker boundary layer and enhanced subtropical westerly winds result in efficient Pb transport to the Himalayas. As Pb isotope ratios are robust conservative chemical tracers and Pb is predominantly derived from anthropogenic sources, these observations suggest that enhanced transport of anthropogenic aerosols to the glacierized catchment of the Himalayas coincides with higher near-surface temperatures in the summer, creating positive feedback that enhances melting. Our results further suggest that >50% of Pb in the Himalayan aerosols originates from the resuspension of historic Pb derived from phased out leaded gasoline, highlighting the importance of legacy Pb stored in the Indo-Gangetic Plains.

Research trends and frontiers on source appointment of soil heavy metal: a scientometric review (2000-2020)

In recent years, source appointment of soil heavy metal has attracted growing attention. However, few studies have attempted to make a comprehensive and systematical review on this topic. For this reason, a total of 1051 publications were retrieved from the Web of Science (WOS) database between 2000 and 2020. A scientometric analysis was carried out to reveal the characteristics of publications, research power, and research hotspots. CiteSpace was used to visualize and summarize the information about the development in this field. The results showed that (1) the number of publications in source appointment of soil heavy metal had increased rapidly; Environmental science and ecology and environmental sciences were top 2 most popular subject categories; (2) Research power was mainly distributed in Asia, Europe, and North America. China and Chinese Academy of Sciences were the most productive country and institution in terms of publications in this field. Biao Huang (China) was the most productive author. However, Hakanson L (Sweden) was the most influential author in terms of citation frequency; (3) Heavy metal, source identification, and contamination were the most frequent keywords. Keyword clustering analysis showed that the research hotspots mainly concentrated on air pollution, bioremediation, spatial distribution, soil, PCA, and so on; (4) Keyword bursts analysis showed that the research frontiers mainly focused on spatial analysis of soil heavy metal and exposure risk to human health.

Effectiveness of plants and green infrastructure utilization in ambient particulate matter removal

Air pollution is regarded as an increasingly threatening, major environmental risk for human health. Seven million deaths are attributed to air pollution each year, 91% of which is due to particulate matter. Vegetation is a xenobiotic means of removing particulate matter. This review presents the mechanisms of PM capture by plants and factors that influence PM reduction in the atmosphere. Vegetation is ubiquitously approved as a PM removal solution in cities, taking various forms of green infrastructure. This review also refers to the effectiveness of plant exploitation in GI: trees, grasslands, green roofs, living walls, water reservoirs, and urban farming. Finally, methods of increasing the PM removal by plants, such as species selection, biodiversity increase, PAH-degrading phyllospheric endophytes, transgenic plants and microorganisms, are presented.

Source apportionment of heavy metals in sediments of the urban rivers flowing into Haizhou Bay, Eastern China: using multivariate statistical analyses and Pb-Sr isotope fingerprints

Urban river runoff carrying various anthropogenic sources of heavy metals (HMs) is the most important input pathways for HM pollutions in the coastal region, apportioning sources of environmental pollutants is key to controlling coastal HM pollution. In the study, surface sediments were collected from seven urban rivers flowing through Lianyungang City and discharging into Haizhou Bay, Eastern China. The concentrations of HMs of the river sediments were, in mg/kg (mean value ± standard deviation): Mn (550 ± 227) > Zn (67 ± 61) > Cr (33 ± 12) > Ni (21 ± 8.5) > Cu (16 ± 7.6) > Pb (15 ± 5.6) > Cd (0.11 ± 0.06), which were slightly to moderately polluted. As important outlets for municipal and industrial sewages, the Shawang River and Linhong River were the most polluted. Based on the multivariate statistical analysis, HMs were attributed to anthropogenic source (industrial, domestic, and agricultural discharges) and natural source (soil parent materials and atmospheric deposition). Based on isotope source apportionment, Pb was mainly from natural source, exhausts of leaded gasoline vehicles, and coal combustion, with the mean contributions of 39.3%, 23.7%, and 37.0%, respectively, and Sr originated from natural source and anthropogenic source, with mean contributions of 31.8% and 68.2%, respectively. Pb-Sr isotopes illustrated that anthropogenic inputs were the dominant source for HMs in urban river sediments flowing into Haizhou Bay, and the isotope tracing results make up the discriminating deficiency of the multivariate statistical analysis.

Tracing the sources of bioaccessible metal(loid)s in urban environments: A multidisciplinary approach

Understanding the links between sources of magnetic particles and bioaccessibility of metal(loids) in environmental sampling media is crucial for better evaluating human health risks, although relevant information in the scientific literature is scarce. Here, soil, road and house dust samples from a heavy industrial area in Greece were characterized in a multidisciplinary study combining magnetic measurements, SEM/EDS analyses, bioaccessibility measurements and Pb isotopic analyses of bioaccessible Pb. The oral and inhalable bioaccessible fractions of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn were assessed by applying simulated gastric and lung solutions. SEM/EDS analysis revealed the abundant presence of anthropogenic Fe-containing spherules of industrial origin in all sampling media, often containing minor contents of Cr, Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn. The inhalation bioaccessibility (%) in all environmental compartments was higher than the oral one for most elements analyzed in the present study. Clear associations between magnetic susceptibility and bioaccessible amounts of most of analyzed elements were encountered for the soil and road dust. The isotopic analyses of bioaccessible Pb showed that there are significant differences in the isotopic ratios between total and bioaccessible Pb. We conclude that Pb solubilized by the simulated gastric and lung extractions is principally anthropogenic, representing a mixture of industrial Pb and Pb related to the past usage of leaded petrol. Low values of ²⁰⁶Pb/²⁰⁷Pb were accompanied by high bioaccessible contents of Cd, Pb and Zn indicating that anthropogenic (mostly industrial) sources exert influence on the bioaccessible forms of these metals. Coupling magnetic and bioaccessibility measurements with stable isotopic technique of bioaccessible Pb is more reliable for determining Pb and other metal sources with high oral and inhalation bioaccessibility.

Possible application of stable isotope compositions for the identification of metal sources in soil

Metals in soil are potentially harmful to humans and ecosystems. Stable isotope measurement may provide "fingerprint" information on the sources of metals. In light of the rapid progress in this emerging field, we present a state-of-the-art overview of how useful stable isotopes are in soil metal source identification. Distinct isotope signals in different sources are the key prerequisites for source apportionment. In this context, Zn and Cd isotopes are particularly helpful for the identification of combustion-related industrial sources, since high-temperature evaporation-condensation would largely fractionate the isotopes of both elements. The mass-independent fractionation of Hg isotopes during photochemical reactions allows for the identification of atmospheric sources. However, compared with traditionally used Sr and Pb isotopes for source tracking whose variations are due to the radiogenic processes, the biogeochemical low-temperature fractionation of Cr, Cu, Zn, Cd, Hg and Tl isotopes renders much uncertainty, since large intra-source variations may overlap the distinct signatures of inter-source variations (i.e., blur the source signals). Stable isotope signatures of non-metallic elements can also aid in source identification in an indirect way. In fact, the soils are often contaminated with different elements. In this case, a combination of stable isotope analysis with mineralogical or statistical approaches would provide more accurate results. Furthermore, isotope-based source identification will also be helpful for comprehending the temporal changes of metal accumulation in soil systems.

Metal Accumulation Profile of Catharanthus roseus (L.) G.Don and Celosia argentea L. with EDTA Co-Application

The problem of metal-induced toxicity is proliferating with an increase in industrialization and urbanization. The buildup of metals results in severe environmental deterioration and harmful impacts on plant growth. In this study, we investigated the potential of two ornamental plants, Catharanthus roseus (L.) G.Don and Celosia argentea L., to tolerate and accumulate Ni, Cr, Cd, Pb, and Cu. These ornamental plants were grown in Hoagland’s nutrient solution containing metal loads (50 µM and 100 µM) alone and in combination with a synthetic chelator, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) (2.5 mM). Plant growth and metal tolerance varied in both plant species for Ni, Cr, Cd, Pb, and Cu. C. roseus growth was better in treatments without EDTA, particularly in Ni, Cr, and Pb treatments, and Pb content increased in all parts of the plant. In contrast, Cd content decreased with EDTA addition. In C. argentea, the addition of EDTA resulted in improved plant biomass at both doses of Cu. In contrast, plant biomass reduced significantly in the case of Ni. In C. argentea, without EDTA, root length in Cd and Cu treatments was significantly lower than the control and other treatments. However, the addition of EDTA resulted in improved growth at both doses for Pb and Cu. Metal accumulation in C. argentea enhanced significantly with EDTA addition at both doses of Cu and Cd. Hence, it can be concluded that EDTA addition resulted in improved growth and better metal uptake than treatments without EDTA. Metal accumulation increased with EDTA addition compared to treatments without EDTA, particularly for Pb in C. roseus and Cu and Cd in C. argentea. Based on the present results, C. roseus showed a better ability to phytostabilize Cu, Cd, and Ni, while C. argentea worked better for Ni, Cd, Cu, and Pb.

Lead source and bioaccessibility in windowsill dusts within a Pb smelting-affected area

Windowsill, heavy metal-containing dust samples, collected at different building heights, may provide some insight into both source and human health risk. Windowsill dust samples were collected from the 1st to 9th floor (1.4-23.2 m above ground) near a lead smelter (1 km to the smelter) and in urban areas (4.2-7.3 km to the smelter) and separated into <10, 10-45 and 45-125 μm size fractions. Samples were extracted with artificial lysosomal fluid (ALF) and the physiologically based extraction test (PBET) (<10 μm fractions only), subjected to scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and Pb isotopic analysis. Greater Pb concentrations were found in 10-45 μm fraction than the other size fractions; at the PX site, dust Pb concentrations increased with windowsill height, while an opposite trend was found at other sites. Isotopic analysis and SEM-EDS results supported this contention. Higher floor samples collected near the smelter were more affected by lead smelting than lower floor samples; lower floor samples collected at urban sites were more affected by resuspended Pb-laden particles from the ground than higher floors. The Pb bioaccessible fraction (BAF) in the ALF and PBET ranged between 68.9-90.1 and 1.3-17.0%, respectively; urban samples had greater BAF values than samples collected near the smelter. This, first of its kind investigation regarding Pb in dusts at different building heights, provides further insight for reducing human health risks within Pb smelter vicinities.

Lead Toxicity in Cereals: Mechanistic Insight Into Toxicity, Mode of Action, and Management

Cereals are the major contributors to global food supply, accounting for more than half of the total human calorie requirements. Sustainable availability of quality cereal grains is an important step to address the high-priority issue of food security. High concentrations of heavy metals specifically lead (Pb) in the soil negatively affect biochemical and physiological processes regulating grain quality in cereals. The dietary intake of Pb more than desirable quantity via food chain is a major concern for humans, as it can predispose individuals to chronic health issues. In plant systems, high Pb concentrations can disrupt several key metabolic processes such as electron transport chain, cellular organelles integrity, membrane stability index, PSII connectivity, mineral metabolism, oxygen-evolving complex, and enzymatic activity. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) has been recommended as an inexpensive strategy for remediating Pb-contaminated soils. A diverse group of Ascomycetes fungi, i.e., dark septate endophytes is successfully used for this purpose. A symbiotic relationship between endophytes and host cereal induces Pb tolerance by immobilizing Pb ions. Molecular and cellular modifications in plants under Pb-stressed environments are explained by transcription factor families such as bZIP, ERF, and GARP as a regulator. The role of metal tolerance protein (MTP), natural resistance-associated macrophage protein (NRAMP), and heavy metal ATPase in decreasing Pb toxicity is well known. In the present review, we provided the contemporary synthesis of existing data regarding the effects of Pb toxicity on morpho-physiological and biochemical responses of major cereal crops. We also highlighted the mechanism/s of Pb uptake and translocation in plants, critically discussed the possible management strategies and way forward to overcome the menace of Pb toxicity in cereals.
