A review of organophosphate flame retardants and plasticizers in the environment: Analysis, occurrence and risk assessment

Developmental toxicity of an emerging organophosphate ester Bis-(2-ethylhexyl)-phenyl phosphate on embryonic zebrafish: Comparison to 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate

Bis-(2-ethylhexyl)-phenyl phosphate (BEHPP) and its structural analog, 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPP), are widely present in the environment. However, their toxic effects, particularly developmental toxicity, remain poorly understood. In this study, we evaluated the impacts of BEHPP and EHDPP on multiple developmental endpoints in zebrafish. BEHPP did not lead to mortality and malformations of embryos within the test concentration range (0.5-4.0 μM). In contrast, EHDPP had significant lethal effects, with an LC50 of 2.44 μM, and induced malformations, notably pericardial edema (PE), with an EC50 of 1.77 μM. In addition, BEHPP induced cardiac dysfunctions in embryos to a similar degree as EHDPP. Both stroke volume and cardiac output were significantly increased at BEHPP concentrations of 1.8 nM and above and at EHDPP concentrations of 4.3 nM and above. Transcriptomic analysis further corroborated the similar disturbance at the molecular level for both substances and revealed the Key Events (KEs) in the cardiac toxic regulation, including the focal adhesions, ECM-receptor interaction, cardiac muscle contraction, and the adrenergic signaling in cardiomyocytes. Taken together, the present study provided novel insights into the adverse effects of these emerging organophosphate esters and highlighted their potential risks to embryonic development in both ecosystems and humans.

Analytical challenges and opportunities in the study of endocrine disrupting chemicals within an exposomics framework

Exposomics aims to measure human exposures throughout the lifespan and the changes they produce in the human body. Exposome-scale studies have significant potential to understand the interplay of environmental factors with complex multifactorial diseases widespread in our society and whose origin remain unclear. In this framework, the study of the chemical exposome aims to cover all chemical exposures and their effects in human health but, today, this goal still seems unfeasible or at least very challenging, which makes the exposome for now only a concept. Furthermore, the study of the chemical exposome faces several methodological challenges such as moving from specific targeted methodologies towards high-throughput multitargeted and non-targeted approaches, guaranteeing the availability and quality of biological samples to obtain quality analytical data, standardization of applied analytical methodologies, as well as the statistical assignment of increasingly complex datasets, or the identification of (un)known analytes. This review discusses the various steps involved in applying the exposome concept from an analytical perspective. It provides an overview of the wide variety of existing analytical methods and instruments, highlighting their complementarity to develop combined analytical strategies to advance towards the chemical exposome characterization. In addition, this review focuses on endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) to show how studying even a minor part of the chemical exposome represents a great challenge. Analytical strategies applied in an exposomics context have shown great potential to elucidate the role of EDCs in health outcomes. However, translating innovative methods into etiological research and chemical risk assessment will require a multidisciplinary effort. Unlike other review articles focused on exposomics, this review offers a holistic view from the perspective of analytical chemistry and discuss the entire analytical workflow to finally obtain valuable results.

Community-level risk assessments on organophosphate esters in the sediments from the Bohai Sea of China based on multimodal species sensitivity distributions coupled with the equilibrium partitioning method

Organophosphate esters (OPEs), increasingly used as alternatives to brominated flame retardants, are ubiquitous in the global aquatic environment. Despite their potential toxicological impact on ecosystems, community-level risk assessments for OPEs in sediments remain scarce. This study investigated OPE occurrences and composition characteristics in the Bohai Sea's sediments and appraised both individual and joint ecological risks posed by characteristic OPE homologs using ten commonly used species sensitivity distribution (SSD) models, integrating acute-to-chronic conversion and phase equilibrium partitioning. OPEs were detected across all sediment samples, with total concentrations ranging from 0.213 ng/g dry weight (dw) to 91.1 ng/g dw. The predominant congeners included tri-n-butyl phosphate (TnBP), triisobutyl phosphate (TiBP), tri(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate, tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP), tris(1, 3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCIPP), and triphenylphosphine oxide. Best-fit SSD models varied among TnBP, TiBP, TCEP, TCPP, and TDCIPP, demonstrating Sigmoid, Burr III, Sigmoid, Burr III, and Burr III, respectively. The same parametric model demonstrated variability in the fitting process for different OPE congeners, which also happened to the fitting results of ten parametric models for the same specific characteristic congener, underscoring the necessity of employing multiple models for precise community-level risk assessments. Hazard concentrations for a 5% cumulative probability were 0.116 mg/L, 2.88 mg/L, 1.30 mg/L, 1.44 mg/L, and 1.85 mg/L for each respective congener. The resulting risk quotients (RQ) and overall hazard index (HI) were selected as criteria to assess the individual and joint ecological risks of OPEs in sediments from the Bohai Sea, respectively. RQ and HI were both below 0.1, indicating a low risk to the local ecosystems. Multi-model SSD analysis could provide refined data for community-level risk evaluation, offering valuable insights for the development of evidence-based environmental standards and pollution control strategies.

Mechanochemical remediation of contaminated soil: A review

Mechanochemical techniques have been garnering growing attention in remediation of contaminated soil. This paper summarizes the performance, mechanism, influential factors, and environmental impacts of mechanochemical remediation (MCR) for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) contaminated soil and heavy metal(loid) s (HMs) contaminated soil. Firstly, in contrast to other technologies, MCR can achieve desirable treatment of POPs, HMs, and co-contaminated soil, especially with high-concentration pollutants. Secondly, POPs undergo mineralization via interaction with mechanically activated substances, where aromatic and aliphatic pollutants in soil may go through varied degradation routes; inorganic pollutants can be firmly combined with soil particles by fragmentation and agglomeration induced by mechanical power, during which additives may enhance the combination but their contact with anionic metal(loid)s may be partially suppressed. Thirdly, the effect of MCR primarily hinges on types of milling systems, the accumulation of mechanical energy, and the use of reagents, which is basically regulated through operating parameters: rotation speed, ball-to-powder ratio, reagent-to-soil ratio, milling time, and soil treatment capacity; minerals like clay, metal oxides, and sand in soil itself are feasible reagents for remediation, and alien additives play a crucial role in synergist and detoxification; additionally, various physicochemical properties of soil might influence the mechanochemical effect to varying degrees, yet the key influential performance and mechanism remain unclear and require further investigation. Concerning the assessment of soil after treatment, attention needs to be paid to soil properties, toxicity of POPs' intermediates and leaching HMs, and long-term appraisement, particularly with the introduction of aggressive additives into the system. Finally, proposals for current issues and forthcoming advancements in this domain are enumerated in items. This review provides valuable insight into mechanochemical approaches for performing more effective and eco-friendly remediation on contaminated soil.

Field study on the uptake pathways and their contributions to the accumulation of organophosphate esters, phthalates, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in upland rice

Plant uptake of organic contaminants generally occurs through either root, gas-phase foliar, or particle-phase foliar uptake. Understanding these pathways is essential for food-system practitioners to reduce human exposures, and to clean contaminated-sites with phytoremediation. Herein, we conducted a field-based experiment using an improved specific exposure chamber to elucidate the uptake pathways of organophosphate esters, phthalates, and polycyclic aromatic compounds, and quantitatively assessed their contributions to organic contaminant accumulations in field-grown rice. For most target compounds, all three uptake pathways (root, foliar gas, and foliar particle uptakes) contributed substantially to the overall contaminant burden in rice. Compounds with lower octanol-water partition coefficients (Kow) were more readily translocated from roots to leaves, and compounds with higher octanol-air partition coefficients (Koa) tended to enter rice leaves mostly through particle deposition. Most compounds were mostly stored in the inner leaves (55.3-98.2 %), whereas the relatively volatile compounds were more readily absorbed by the waxy layer and then transferred to the inner leaves. Air particle desorption was a key process regulating foliar uptake of low-volatility compounds. The results can help us to better understand and predict the environmental fate of those contaminants, and develop more effective management strategies for reducing their human exposure through food ingestion.

Effect of nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides to triphenyl phosphate degradation and cytotoxicity on surface of different transition metal salts

Nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides, as the dominant toxic gases in the atmosphere, can induce severe human health problems under the composite pollutant conditions. Currently the effect of nitrogen or sulfur oxides in atmospheric environment to the degradation and cytotoxicity of triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) on atmospheric particle surfaces still remain poorly understood. Hence, laboratory simulation methods were used in this study to investigate the effect and related mechanism. First, particle samples were prepared with the TPhP coated on MnSO4, CuSO4, FeSO4 and Fe2(SO4)3 surface. The results showed that, when nitrogen or sulfur oxides were present, more significant TPhP degradation on all samples can be observed under both light and dark conditions. The results proved nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides were the vital influence factors to the degradation of TPhP, which mainly promoted the OH generation in the polluted atmosphere. The mechanism study indicated that diphenyl hydrogen phosphate (DPhP) and OH-DPhP were two main stable degradation products. These degradation products originated from the phenoxy bond cleavage and hydroxylation of TPhP caused by hydroxyl radicals. In addition, no TPhP related organosulfates (OSs) or organic nitrates (ON) formation were observed. Regarding the cytotoxicity, all the particles can induce more significant cellular injury and apoptosis of A549 cells, which may be relevant to the adsorbed nitrogen oxides or sulfur oxides on particles surfaces. The superfluous reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation was the possible reason of cytotoxicity. This research can supply a comprehensive understanding of the promoting effect of nitrogen and sulfur oxides to TPhP degradation and the composite cytotoxicity of atmospheric particles.

Associations of prenatal exposure to individual and mixed organophosphate esters with ADHD symptom trajectories in preschool children: The modifying effects of maternal Vitamin D

BACKGROUND

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are a class of environmental chemicals with endocrine-disrupting properties. Epidemiologic studies have demonstrated that prenatal OPEs exposure is associated with neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring. However, studies assessing the effects of prenatal OPEs exposure on the dynamic changes in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in preschoolers are scarce. Since vitamin D has been demonstrated to have a "neuroprotective" effect, the modifying effects of maternal vitamin D were estimated.

METHODS

The present study included 2410 pregnant women from the Ma'anshan Birth Cohort. The levels of OPEs in the mothers' urine were examined in the three trimesters. The Chinese version of the Conners Abbreviated Symptom Questionnaire was used to examine preschoolers' ADHD symptoms at 3, 5, and 6 years of age. ADHD symptom trajectories were fitted via group-based trajectory modeling. We used multinomial logistic regression, Bayesian kernel machine regression, quantile-based g-computation, and generalized linear models to assess individual and mixed relationships between OPEs during pregnancy and preschoolers' ADHD symptoms and trajectories.

RESULTS

Preschoolers' ADHD symptom scores were fitted to 3 trajectories, including the low-score, moderate-score, and high-score groups. First-trimester dibutyl phosphate (DBP), second-trimester bis(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (BBOEP), and third-trimester diphenyl phosphate (DPHP) were associated with an increased risk in the high-score group (p < 0.05). BBOEP in the third trimester was associated with decreased risk in the moderate-score group (OR = 0.89, 95% CI: 0.79, 1.00). For mothers with 25(OH)D deficiency, a positive relationship was observed between OPEs during pregnancy and symptom trajectories. Our results did not reveal any mixed effects of OPEs on ADHD symptom trajectories.

CONCLUSION

Prenatal exposure to OPEs had heterogeneous associations with ADHD symptom trajectories in preschoolers. Additionally, the effect of individual OPEs on symptom trajectories was intensified by vitamin D deficiency.

EHDPP induces proliferation inhibition and apoptosis to spermatocyte: Insights from transcriptomic and metabolomic profiles

BACKGROUND

2-ethylhexyldiphenyl phosphate (EHDPP) was used widespread in recent years and it was reported to impair reproductive behaviors and decrease fertility in male Japanese medaka. However, whether EHDPP causes spermatogenesis disturbance remains uncertain.

OBJECTIVES

We aimed to study the male reproductive toxicity of EHDPP and its related mechanism.

METHODS

Human spermatocyte cell line GC-2 was treated with 10 µM, 50 µM or 100 µM EHDPP for 24 h. Male CD-1 mice aged 6 weeks were given 1, 10, or 100 mg/kg/d EHDPP daily for 42 days and then euthanized to detect sperm count and motility. Proliferation, apoptosis, oxidative stress was detected in mice and cell lines. Metabolome and transcriptome were used to detect the related mechanism. Finally, anti-oxidative reagent N-Acetylcysteine was used to detect whether it could reverse the side-effect of EHDPP both in vivo and in vitro.

RESULTS

Our results showed that EHDPP inhibited proliferation and induced apoptosis in mice testes and spermatocyte cell line GC-2. Metabolome and transcriptome showed that nucleotide metabolism disturbance and DNA damage was potentially involved in EHDPP-induced reproductive toxicity. Finally, we found that excessive ROS production caused DNA damage and mitochondrial dysfunction; NAC supplement reversed the side effects of EHDPP such as DNA damage, proliferation inhibition, apoptosis and decline in sperm motility.

CONCLUSION

ROS-evoked DNA damage and nucleotide metabolism disturbance mediates EHDPP-induced germ cell proliferation inhibition and apoptosis, which finally induced decline of sperm motility.

Regulation of Ocean Surface Currents and Seasonal Sea Ice Variations on the Occurrence and Transport of Organophosphate Esters in the Central Arctic Ocean

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) have been observed in the remote Arctic Ocean, yet the influence of hydrodynamics and seasonal sea ice variations on the occurrence and transport of waterborne OPEs remains unclear. This study comprehensively examines OPEs in surface seawater of the central Arctic Ocean during the summer of 2020, integrating surface ocean current and sea ice concentration data. The results confirm significant spatiotemporal variations of the OPEs, with the total concentration of seven major OPEs averaging 780 ± 970 pg/L. Chlorinated OPEs, particularly tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP), were dominant. The significant impact of hydrodynamics on the OPE transport is demonstrated by higher OPE concentrations in regions with strong surface currents, especially at the edge of the Beaufort Gyre and the confluence of the Beaufort Gyre and the Transpolar Drift. Furthermore, OPE levels were generally higher in drifting-ice-covered regions compared to ice-free regions, attributed to the volatilization of dissolved OPEs formerly trapped below the sea ice or newly released from melting snow and sea ice. Notably, TCPP decreased by only 19% in the ice-free area, while the more volatile triphenyl phosphate decreased by 63% compared with the partial ice region.

Organophosphate flame retardants in Romania coastline: Occurrence, faith and environmental risk

This research comprehensively assesses phosphorus-based flame retardants (OPFRs) in seawater, sediment, and algae from the Romanian Black Sea coastline, evaluating their concentrations, distribution patterns, and potential environmental risks. OPFR concentrations ranged from 479 to 2229 ng/L in abiotic samples and 44 to 1953 ng/g dry weight in sediments, while algae samples showed concentrations between 273 and 10,301 ng/g dry weight. The most common OPFRs identified were tri-propyl phosphate (TPP), tri(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), and tri(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP) in abiotic samples, with TCEP, diphenyl phosphate (DPHP), TPP, and TCPP dominating in algae. Notably, TPP reached concentrations of 1417 ng/L and 10,062 ng/g dry weight in algae. The environmental risk assessment indicated that these contaminants pose risks ranging from low to medium, highlighting a moderate concern for aquatic organisms. The findings underscore the need for ongoing monitoring and evaluation of OPFR levels in marine environments to inform management strategies and mitigate potential ecological impacts on the Black Sea ecosystem.

Source identification and human exposure assessment of organophosphate flame retardants and plasticisers in soil and outdoor dust from Nigerian e-waste dismantling and dumpsites

Electronic waste (e-waste) dismantling and dumpsite processes are major sources of organophosphate flame retardant and plasticiser emissions and may pose potentially adverse effects on environment and human health. In 20 outdoor dust and 49 soil samples collected from four e-waste dismantling and three e-waste dumpsites in two States of Nigeria (Lagos and Ogun), we identified 13 alternative plasticisers (APs), 7 legacy phthalate plasticisers (LPs), and 17 organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) for the first time in African e-waste streams. In the samples from dismantling sites, the range (median) concentrations of ∑13APs, ∑7LPs, and ∑17OPFRs were 11 to 2747 μg/g (144 μg/g), 11 to 396 μg/g (125 μg/g), and 0.2 to 68 μg/g (5.5 μg), in dust respectively and 1.8 to 297 μg/g (55 μg/g), 1.3 to 274 μg/g (48.5 μg/g), and 1.6 to 62 μg/g (1.6 μg/g), in soil respectively. Results for soil samples from e-waste dumpsites were (6.6 to 195 μg/g (23.7 μg/g), 6.0 to 295 μg/g (54.8), and 0.4 to 42.3 μg/g (9.0 μg/g) for ∑13APs, ∑7LPs, and ∑17OPFRs respectively. Overall, concentrations of APs were significantly higher at the dismantling sites (p = 0.005) compared to dumpsites, levels of LPs were higher at dismantling sites but not significant, while OPFR concentrations were significantly higher in dumpsite samples (p = 0.005). Plasticisers were found to be major contributors to pollution at e-waste dismantling sites, while OPFRs were associated with both automobile dismantling and e-waste dumpsite processes. Following particle size fractionation of selected soil samples, higher concentrations of targeted compounds were observed in the smaller mesh (180 μm) soil sieve fraction. For dust, the total median estimated daily intake via ingestion and dermal adsorption (EDIing and EDIderm) ranged from 43 to 74 ng/kg bw/day and 0.4 to 0.7 ng/kg bw/day, respectively. Correspondingly, 4.6 to 45 ng/kg bw/day and 0.015 to 0.57 ng/kg bw/day were the values found for soil, respectively. According to these results, the targeted chemicals do not appear to pose a non-carcinogenic risk to e-waste workers through ingestion or dermal contact of bio-accessible fractions of the chemicals. Human biomonitoring campaigns are recommended in the Nigerian e-waste environment considering the elevated concentration levels found for the majority of targeted compounds and that risk parameters required for exposure assessment were only available for a limited number of compounds.

Species-specific metabolism of triphenyl phosphate and its mono-hydroxylated product by human and rat CYP2E1 and the carp ortholog

Organophosphorus flame retardants (PFRs) are a class of flame retardants and environmental pollutants with various biological effects. Recentstudies have evidenced activation of some PFRs by human CYP enzymes (including CYP2E1) for genotoxic effects. However, the activity of CYPs in fish species toward PFR metabolism remains unclear. This study was aimed on comparing the metabolism of triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) and 4-OH-TPHP in human, rat, and common carp, and the involvement of human CYP2E1 and its orthologs in the metabolism, by using fomepizole (4-MP, CYP2E1 inhibitor) as a modulator, in silico molecular docking and dynamics analyses. The rate of TPHP metabolism was apparently faster with human and rat, microsomes than with fish microsomes, the major metabolites were phosphodiester and hydroxylated phosphate, with 30-80 % of TPHP forming unidentified metabolites in the system of each species. 4-OH-TPHP was readily metabolized by both human and rat microsomes, whereas it was hardly metabolized in carp assays. Meanwhile, with 4-MP the transformation of TPHP to 4-OH-TPHP was enhanced in the human/rat systems while suppressed in the carp system. Moreover, the formation of unidentified metabolites in human and rat systems was mostly inhibited by 4-MP. Through molecular dynamics analysis TPHP and its primary metabolites showed high affinity for human and rat CYP2E1, as well as the carp ortholog (CYP2G1-like enzyme), however, the 4-OH-TPHP bond to the latter was too far from the heme to permit a biochemical reaction. This study suggests that the metabolism/activation of TPHP might be favored in mammals rather than carp, a fish species.

Characteristics and partitions of traditional and emerging organophosphate esters in soil and groundwater based on machine learning

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) pose hazards to both humans and the environment. This study applied target screening to analyze the concentrations and detection frequencies of OPEs in the soil and groundwater of representative contaminated sites in the Pearl River Delta. The clusters and correlation characteristics of OPEs in soil and groundwater were calculated by self-organizing map (SOM). The risk assessment and partitions of OPEs in industrial park soil and groundwater were conducted. The results revealed that 14 out of 23 types of OPEs were detected. The total concentrations (Σ23OPEs) ranged from 1.931 to 743.571 ng/L in the groundwater, and 0.218 to 79.578 ng/g in the soil, the former showed highly soluble OPEs with high detection frequencies and concentrations, whereas the latter exhibited the opposite trend. SOM analysis revealed that the distribution of OPEs in the soil differed significantly from that in the groundwater. In the industrial park, OPEs posed acceptable risks in both the soil and groundwater. The soil could be categorized into Zone I and II, and the groundwater into Zone I, II, and III, with corresponding management recommendations. Applying SOM to analyze the characteristics and partitions of OPEs may provide references for other new pollutants and contaminated sites.

Migration patterns of organophosphate esters from plastic food packaging simulants to foods: Donors, behaviours, and influencing factors

In recent years, organophosphate esters (OPEs) have been widely produced and used as flame retardants and plasticizer additives, posing significant ecological and health risks. Dietary intake is considered to be the primary route of human exposure to OPEs. Plastic food packaging materials are considered a crucial source for contamination of OPEs in food. However, the migration behaviour of OPEs from plastic food packaging materials into foods has received limited attention. In this study, we employed a novel method to prepare migration donors containing 13 kinds of OPEs. The migration behaviours of OPEs from food packaging simulants (polypropylene) to foods (full-fat milk powder) were simulated, and factors influencing the migration of OPEs were examined, including the properties of the target compounds, migration temperature, fat content of the migration receptors, and mass transfer mode. The results indicated that OPEs exhibited a significant migration tendency. Low molecular weight OPEs (< 300 Da) had faster migration efficiency compared to high molecular weight OPEs. The mean migration efficiencies of various OPEs showed a significant negative correlation with their molecular weights (p < 0.01) and a significant positive correlation with temperature (p < 0.01). Except for resorcinol bis(diphenyl phosphate) (RDP), which showed almost no migration, the mean migration efficiencies of other OPEs at 25 °C, 40 °C, and 60 °C were 3.1-37.5 %, 9.0-60.0 %, and 23.9-80.4 %, respectively. Most of the OPEs demonstrated higher migration efficiency in high-fat content food than low-fat content food. The migration of OPEs from food packaging simulants to foods primarily occurred through contact rather than gas-phase mass transfer. Overall, this study uncovers the migration behaviours of OPEs from food packaging simulants to foods and scrutinized the relevant factors influencing the migration. It is expected that the research in terms of the contamination control of OPEs in food will benefit from this work.

Fugacity- and biotransformation-based mechanistic insights into the trophic transfer of organophosphate flame retardants in a subtropical coastal food web from the Northern Beibu Gulf of China

The bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) in marine ecosystems have attracted great attention in recent research, but our understanding of the trophic transfer mechanisms involved is limited. In this study, we investigated the trophodynamics of OPFRs and their metabolites in a subtropical coastal food web collected from the northern Beibu Gulf, China, and characterized their trophodynamics using fugacity- and biotransformation-based approaches. Eleven OPFRs and all seven metabolites were simultaneously quantified in the shellfish, crustacean, pelagic fish, and benthic fish samples, with total concentrations ranging from 164 to 4.11 × 104 and 4.56-4.28 × 103 ng/g lipid weight, respectively. Significant biomagnification was observed only for tris (phenyl) phosphate (TPHP) and tris (2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (TEHP), while other compounds except for tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) displayed biomagnification trends based on Monte Carlo simulations. Using a fugacity-based approach to normalize the accumulation of OPFRs in biota to their relative biological phase composition, storage lipid is the predominant biological phase for the mass distribution of 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPHP) and TPHP. The water content and structure protein are equally important for TCEP, whereas lipid and structure protein are the two most important phases for other OPFRs. The mass distribution of these OPFRs along with TLs can explain their trophodynamics in the food web. The organophosphate diesters (as OPFR metabolites) also displayed biomagnification trends based on bootstrapped estimation. The correlation analysis and Korganism-water results jointly suggested the metabolites accumulation in high-TL organisms was related to biotransformation processes. The metabolite-backtracked trophic magnification factors for tri-n‑butyl phosphate (TNBP) and TPHP were both greater than the values that accounted for only the parent compounds. This study highlights the incorporation of fugacity and biotransformation analysis to characterize the trophodynamic processes of OPFRs and other emerging pollutants in food webs.

Identification of organic constituents on atmospheric particulate matter in the East Asian background air of free troposphere by GC×GC-TOFMS

The presence of organic compounds on the particulate matter (PM) or aerosols can arise from the condensation of gaseous organic compounds on the existing aerosols, or from organic precursors to form secondary organic aerosols (SOA) through photochemistry. The objective of this study is to characterize organic constituents on aerosols relevant to their emission sources and the key compounds revealing the evolution of aerosols with the use of a novel analytical technique. A time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS) coupled with comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC) was developed using a flow type of modulator instead of a thermal type as a prelude to field applications without the need for cryogen. The methodology of GC×GC-TOFMS is discussed in this study in detail. Since the coarse PM (PM10-2.5) may exhibit with a relatively high OC content compared to PM2.5, the GC×GC results have been obtained by analyzing PM10 samples collected in parallel with OC/EC analysis of PM2.5 samples at the Lulin Atmospheric Background Station (LABS, 23.47°N, 120.87°E, 2862 m ASL) as the high-mountain background site in East Asia. We found that the organic analytes were in a majority in the range of 12-30 carbon numbers falling in the category of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) with 43 compounds of alcohol, aldehyde, ketone, and ester varieties if excluding alkanes. Intriguingly, trace amounts of plasticizers and phosphorus flame retardants such as phthalates (PAEs) and triphenyl phosphate (TPP) were also found, likely originating from regions involved in open burning of household solid waste in Southeast Asia or e-waste recycling in southern China and along the long-range transport route. Compounds such as these are unique to the specific sources, demonstrating the wide spread of these hazardous compounds in the environment.

Biomonitoring urinary organophosphorus flame retardant metabolites by liquid-liquid extraction and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and their association with oxidative stress

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) are widely used as substitutes for traditional brominated flame retardants, necessitating a reliable and sensitive method for biomonitoring their urinary metabolites to assess human exposure. This study conducted biomonitoring of 10 metabolites of OPFRs in 152 adults and assessed their association with oxidative stress biomarkers 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine and 8-hydroxyguanosine. Urinary metabolites of OPFRs were released via enzymatic deconjugation. The addition of sodium chloride to the urine samples increases the ionic strength, inducing a salting-out effect that reduces the solubility of these compounds, thereby facilitating their extraction with a mixture of ethyl acetate and acetonitrile. Then, the metabolites of OPFRs were quantified by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, and we validated the method for linear range, precision, matrix effect, and method detection limit. The detection limit of the metabolites of OPFRs ranged from 0.01 to 0.2 μg/L, and these metabolites were detected with high frequencies ranging from 25.0 to 98.68% in the urine samples. The concentration of bis (2-chloroethyl) phosphate was significantly higher in males than in females, with the geometric mean concentration of 0.88 μg/L for males and 0.53 μg/L for females, respectively. Spearman correlation analysis revealed weak but statistically significant positive correlations among the urinary metabolites. Bayesian kernel machine regression analysis showed a significant positive association between elevated urinary concentrations of metabolites of OPFRs and increased oxidative stress levels. Di-n-butyl phosphate was identified as the metabolite that significantly contributed to the elevated level of 8-hydroxyguanosine.

Organophosphate esters and their metabolites in silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus) of the Vietnamese coastal areas: Spatial-temporal distribution and exposure risk

A large number of studies on organophosphate esters (tri-OPEs) in marine organisms have not assessed the simultaneous occurrence of tri-OPEs and their metabolites (di-OPEs) in these species. This research investigated the concentration and geographical distribution of 15 tri-OPEs and 7 di-OPEs in 172 samples of Pampus argenteus that were collected annually from 2021 to 2023 at three distinct locations along the Vietnamese coast. As a result, tri-OPEs and di-OPEs were detected in numerous fish samples, indicating their widespread spatial and temporal occurrence in marine fish and pointing out the importance of monitoring their levels. The tri-OPEs and di-OPEs ranged within 2.1-38.9 ng g-1 dry weight (dw) and 3.2-263.4 ng g-1 dw, respectively. The mean concentrations of tri-OPEs ranged from 0.4 (TIPrP) to 5.4 ng g-1 dw (TBOEP), with TBOEP and TEHP having the highest mean values. In addition, the profiles of tri-OPEs in fish exhibited a descending order: Σalkyl OPEs > ΣCl-alkyl OPEs > Σaryl OPEs. The di-OPEs, namely BEHP and DMP, had the highest mean levels, measuring 33.4 ng g-1 dw and 23.8 ng g-1 dw, respectively. Furthermore, there have been significant findings of strong positive correlations between di-OPEs and tri-OPE pairs (p < 0.05). It is worth noting that there is a noticeable difference in the composition of tri-OPEs between the North and other regions. Despite these findings, the presence of OPE-contaminated fish did not pose any health risks to Vietnam's coastal population.

Occurrence, spatial distribution and ecological risk assessment of Organophosphate Esters in surface water and sediments from the Ravi River and its tributaries

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are widely used as substitutes for brominated flame retardants and characterized as emerging contaminants. Due to their toxicity and persistent nature, OPEs are becoming a matter of greater concern worldwide. However, information about the pollution profile of OPEs and associated ecological risks is still scarce in environmental matrices of the South Asian region, particularly Pakistan. Hence, the current study was conducted to investigate the occurrence, spatial distribution patterns, ecological risks and riverine flux of 10 organophosphate esters in surface water and sediments of Ravi River and its four tributaries. The concentrations of ∑10OPEs were in the range of 19.2 - 105 ng/L, with the dominance of chlorinated-OPEs (51 %) in surface water, whereas in case of sediments, the ∑10OPEs concentrations ranged from 20.7 to 149 ng/g dw, with high abundance of non - chlorinated alkyl-OPEs, which contributed about 56 % to total OPE concentration. The correlation analysis signified a strong positive relation of OPEs with TOC (p < 0.05, R = 0.76) in sediments; and in addition to this, field-based LogKoc values were estimated to be higher than predicted LogKoc. Moreover, a significantly positive correlation (p < 0.05, R = 0.88) was observed between LogKoc and LogKow, implying that hydrophobicity plays a significant role in OPE distribution in different environmental matrices. The global comparison revealed that contamination status of OPEs in the present study was comparatively lower than other regional findings, furthermore, principal component analysis suggested vehicular emissions, industrial discharges, household supplies and atmospheric deposition as main sources of OPEs occurrence in current study region. Furthermore, the riverine flux of ∑10OPEs was estimated to be 0.68 tons/yr and the ecological risk assessment indicated that all OPEs, except EHDPP and TCrP, showed negligible or insignificant ecological risks for aquatic organisms.

Gestational organophosphate esters (OPEs) exposure in association with placental DNA methylation levels of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) signaling pathway-related genes

BACKGROUND

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) exposure could affect offspring health. However, the underlying mechanisms are not well documented.

OBJECTIVES

Based on a birth cohort study, we aimed to investigate the associations among gestational OPEs exposure, placental DNA methylation levels of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) signaling pathway-related genes, and fetal growth.

METHODS

We measured the concentrations of eight OPE metabolites in maternal urine samples and neonatal anthropometric measurements in 733 mother-child pairs. In 327 placental samples, we assessed the DNA methylation levels of 14 genes which were involved in the PPARs signaling pathway and expressed in placenta. Multiple linear regression models were used to examine the associations of OPEs exposure with placental DNA methylation, and of OPEs and placental DNA methylation with neonatal anthropometric measurements. Causal mediation analyses were conducted to examine the potential mediating role of placental DNA methylation in the pathway between OPEs exposure and fetal growth.

RESULTS

We observed a general pattern of OPEs exposure being associated with hypermethylation of candidate genes, with statistically significant associations identified for several OPEs with RXRA, ACAA1, ACADL, ACADM, PLTP, and NR1H3 methylation. Further, gestational exposure to BCIPP, DPP, BBOEP, ∑NCl-OPEs, and ∑OPEs tended to be associated with lower anthropometric measurements, with more significant associations observed on arm circumference, and abdominal and back skinfold thickness. Notably, RXRA, ACAA1, ACOX1, CPT2, ACADM, and NR1H3 methylation tended to be associated with lower neonatal anthropometric measurements, especially for abdominal and back skinfold thickness. Moreover, mediation analyses showed that 19.42 % of the total effect of DPP on the back skinfold thickness was mediated by changes in RXRA methylation, and there was a significant indirect effect of RXRA methylation.

CONCLUSIONS

Gestational OPEs exposure could disrupt the placental DNA methylation levels of PPAR signaling pathway-related genes, which might contribute to the effect of OPEs on fetal growth.

Organophosphate esters in human serum: a relatively simple and efficient liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry method

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are widely used as flame retardants and plasticizers, which are of growing concern due to their endocrine-disrupting effects, developmental toxicity, and potential carcinogenicity. However, data on human exposure to OPEs is still scarce. In this study, a relatively simple and efficient method with less serum consumption for the detection of OPEs in human serum was developed and validated. Nine OPEs in 200 μL of human serum were extracted by an acetonitrile-formic acid system and analyzed using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole tandem time-of-flight high-resolution mass spectrometry. Several experiments were conducted to optimize the chromatographic and mass spectrometric conditions as well as sample preparation to obtain a more sensitive and efficient analytical protocol. The proposed method was examined in terms of its linearity, accuracy, precision, detection limit, and matrix effect. The matrix-spiked recoveries of the target OPEs ranged from 83.3% to 111.1%, with relative standard deviations between 2.7% and 16.6%. The detection limits were within (0.002 to 0.029) ng mL-1, while the quantification limits were within (0.007 to 0.098) ng mL-1. The internal standard-corrected matrix effects varied from 82.7% to 113.9%. Finally, the method was applied to detect OPEs in actual human serum samples. All nine OPEs were detected in 269 serum samples to varying degrees, with the average concentrations ranging from (0.08 to 1.77) ng mL-1. After validation, the method was found to be simple in pretreatment, high in sensitivity, good in practicality, and suitable for exposure evaluation of OPEs in populations.

Organophosphate esters in inert landfill soil: A case study

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) used as flame retardants and plasticizers are additives in building and construction materials, decorations, furniture, electronic equipment, among other applications. The presence of materials containing these substances in construction and demolition waste (CDW) from weak waste management practices can result in environmental contamination. In this study, OPEs' presence in soil samples collected from a CDW landfill in Brazil was evaluated. Soil samples were collected in areas adjacent to CDW from an inert landfill, and the samples were analysed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The OPEs were detected in all soil samples at quantifiable concentrations ranging from 21 to 251 ng g-1, and detected compounds were tris(phenyl) phosphate, tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate, tris(1,3-dichloroisopropyl) phosphate, tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate and 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate. The presence of these compounds in a CDW landfill is probably due to the lack of control of the materials sent to and deposited in the landfill, which, results in part from the lack of sampling and screening systems that can help identify the presence of contaminants in the CDW waste stream. This is partially due to OPEs not being considered controlled compounds under current regulations, thus screening or separation for handling of OPEs at construction and demolition work sites is rare to non-existent. The data generated in this study reveals the need for improving CDW management to minimize, if not eliminate, environmental contamination by OPEs.

Exposure to resorcinol bis (diphenyl phosphate) induces colonization of alien microorganisms with potential impacts on the gut microbiota and metabolic disruption in male zebrafish

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) have been demonstrated to induce various forms of toxicity in aquatic organisms. However, a scarcity of evidence impedes the conclusive determination of whether OPEs manifest sex-dependent toxic effects. Here, we investigated the effects of tris (1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP) and resorcinol bis (diphenyl phosphate) (RDP) on the intestines of both female and male zebrafish. The results indicated that, in comparison to TCPP, RDP induced more pronounced intestinal microstructural damage and oxidative stress, particularly in male zebrafish. 16S rRNA sequencing and metabolomics revealed significant alterations in the species richness and oxidative stress-related metabolites in the intestinal microbiota of zebrafish under exposure to both TCPP and RDP, manifesting gender-specific effects. Based on differential species analysis, we defined invasive species and applied invasion theory to analyze the reasons for changes in the male fish intestinal community. Correlation analysis demonstrated that alien species may have potential effects on metabolism. Overall, this study reveals a pronounced gender-dependent impact on both the intestinal microbiota and metabolic disruptions of zebrafish due to OPEs exposure and offers a novel perspective on the influence of pollutants on intestinal microbial communities and metabolism.

Toxicity comparison and risk assessment of two chlorinated organophosphate flame retardants (TCEP and TCPP) on Polypedates megacephalus tadpoles

Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) and tris(1‑chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP) are widely used as chlorinated organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) due to their fire-resistance capabilities. However, their extensive use has led to their permeation and pollution in aquatic environments. Using amphibians, which are non-model organisms, to test the toxic effects of OPFRs is relatively uncommon. This study examined the acute and chronic toxicity differences between TCEP and TCPP on Polypedates megacephalus tadpoles and evaluated the potential ecological risks to tadpoles in different aquatic environments using the risk quotient (RQ). In acute toxicity assay, the tadpole survival rates decreased with increased exposure time and concentrations, with TCEP exhibiting higher LC50 values than TCPP, at 305.5 mg/L and 70 mg/L, respectively. In the chronic assay, prolonged exposure to 300 μg/L of both substances resulted in similar adverse effects on tadpole growth, metamorphosis, and hepatic antioxidant function. Based on RQ values, most aquatic environments did not pose an ecological risk to tadpoles. However, the analysis showed that wastewater presented higher risks than rivers and drinking water, and TCPP posed a higher potential risk than TCEP in all examined aquatic environments. These findings provide empirical evidence to comprehend the toxicological effects of OPFRs on aquatic organisms and to assess the safety of aquatic environments.

Estimated daily intake and cumulative risk assessment of organophosphate esters and associations with DNA damage among e-waste workers in Hong Kong

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are extensively used as additives in various products, including electronic equipment, which becomes e-waste when obsolete. Nevertheless, no study has evaluated OPEs exposure levels and the related health risks among e-waste workers in Hong Kong. Therefore, 201 first-spot morning urine samples were collected from 101 e-waste workers and 100 office workers to compare eight urinary OPE metabolites (mOPEs) levels in these groups. The concentrations of six mOPEs were similar in e-waste workers and office workers, except for significantly higher levels of diphenyl phosphate (DPHP) in e-waste workers and bis(1-chloro-2propyl) phosphate (BCIPP) in office workers. Spearman correlation analysis showed that most non-chlorinated mOPEs were correlated with each other in e-waste workers (i.e., nine out of ten pairs, including di-p-cresyl phosphate (DpCP) and di-o-cresyl phosphate (DoCP), DpCP and bis(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (BBOEP), DpCP and DPHP, DpCP and dibutyl phosphate (DBP), DoCP and BBOEP, DoCP and DPHP, DoCP and DBP, BBOEP and DPHP, DPHP and DBP), indicating that handling e-waste could be the exposure source of specific OPEs. The median values of estimated daily intake (EDI) and hazard quotient (HQ) suggested that the health risks from OPEs exposures were under the recommended thresholds. However, linear regression models, Quantile g-computation, and Bayesian kernel machine regression found that urinary mOPEs elevated 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OhdG) levels individually or as a mixture, in which DPHP contributed prominently. In conclusion, although e-waste might not elevate the internal OPEs levels among the participating Hong Kong e-waste workers, attention should be paid to the potential DNA damage stimulated by OPEs under the currently recommended thresholds.

Temporal trends of plastic additive contents in sediment cores of three French rivers (Loire, Meuse and Moselle) over the last decades

Sediment cores from three major French watersheds (Loire, Meuse and Moselle) have been dated by 137Cs and 210Pbxs from 1910 (Loire), 1947 (Meuse) and 1930 (Moselle) until the present in order to reconstruct trajectories of plastic additive contaminants including nine phthalate esters (PAEs) and seven organophosphate esters (OPEs), measured by gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS-MS). Historical levels of ∑PAEs were higher than those of ∑OPEs in the Loire and the Moselle sediments, while ∑PAEs and ∑OPEs contents were of the same order of magnitude in the Meuse sediments. Although increases in concentrations do not evolve linearly, our results clearly indicate an increase in OPEs and PAEs concentrations from the 1950-1970 period onwards, compared with the first half of the 20th century. Our results show that, ∑OPE contents increase gradually over time in the Loire and Meuse rivers but evolve more randomly in the Moselle River. Trajectories of ∑PAEs depend on the river and no generality can be established, suggesting sedimentary reworking and/or local contamination. Data from this study allowed comparisons of contents of ∑OPEs and ∑PAEs between rivers, with ∑OPE concentrations in the Moselle River > Meuse River > Loire River, and concentrations of ∑PAEs in the Loire River > Moselle River > Meuse River. Among all PAEs, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) was the most abundant in all sediment samples, followed by diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP). Tris (2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP) was the most abundant OPE in sediments of the three rivers. In addition, strong positive Pearson correlations were observed between organic matter (OM) parameters and OPE concentrations, and to a lesser extent, between OM parameters and PAE concentrations. This is particularly true for the Moselle River and for the Loire River, but less so for the Meuse River.

Distribution patterns and origins of organophosphate esters in soils from different climate systems on the Tibetan Plateau

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are extensively applied in various materials as flame retardants and plasticizers, and have high biological toxicity. OPEs are detected worldwide, even in distant polar regions and the Tibetan Plateau (TP). However, few studies have been performed to evaluate the distribution patterns and origins of OPEs in different climate systems on the TP. This study investigated the distribution characteristics, possible sources, and ecological risks of OPEs in soils from the different climate systems on the TP and its surroundings. The total concentrations of OPEs in soil varied from 468 to 17,451 pg g-1 dry weight, with greater concentrations in southeast Tibet (monsoon zone), followed by Qinghai (transition zone) and, finally, southern Xingjiang (westerly zone). OPE composition profiles also differed among the three areas with tri-n-butyl phosphate dominant in the westerly zone and tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate dominant in the Indian monsoon zone. Correlations between different compounds and altitude, soil organic carbon, or longitude varied in different climate zones, indicating that OPE distribution originates from both long-range atmospheric transport and local emissions. Ecological risk assessment showed that tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate and tri-phenyl phosphate exhibited medium risks in soil at several sites in southeast Tibet. Considering the sensitivity and vulnerability of TP ecosystems to anthropogenic pollutants, the ecological risks potentially caused by OPEs in this region should be further assessed.

Concentration levels and ecological risk assessment of typical organophosphate esters in representative surface waters of a megacity

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) have been widely used as flame retardants and plasticizers in consumer and industrial products. They have been found to have numerous exposure hazards. Recently, several OPEs have been detected in surface waters around the world, which may pose potential ecological risks to freshwater organisms. In this study, the concentration, spatial variation, and ecological risk of 15 OPEs in the Beiyun and Yongding rivers were unprecedentedly investigated by the ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) and risk quotient (RQ) method. The result showed that triethyl phosphate (TEP), tri (2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP) were the most abundant OPEs with average concentrations of 55.53 ng/L and 42.29 ng/L, respectively. The concentrations of OPEs in the Beiyun River are higher than in the Yongding River, and their levels were higher in densely populated and industrial areas. The risk assessment showed that there was insignificant from OPEs to freshwater organisms in these rivers (RQs <0.1). The risk was higher downstream than upstream, which was related to human-intensive industrial activities downstream in the Yongding River. The ecological risk of OPEs in surface waters worldwide was estimated by joint probability curves (JPCs), and the result showed that there was a moderate risk for tri (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), a low risk for trimethyl phosphate (TMP), and insignificant for other OPEs. In addition, the QSAR-ICE-SSD model was used to calculate the hazardous concentration for 5% (HC5). This result validated the feasibility and accuracy of this model in predicting acute data of OPEs and reducing biological experiments on the toxicity of OPEs. These results revealed the ecological risk of OPEs and provided the scientific basis for environmental managers.

Personal environmental exposure to plasticizers and organophosphate flame retardants using silicone wristbands and urine: Patterns, comparisons, and correlations

Plasticizers (PLs) and organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) are ubiquitous in the environment due to their widespread use and potential for leaching from consumer products. Environmental exposure is a critical aspect of the human exposome, revealing complex interactions between environmental contaminants and potential health effects. Silicone wristbands (SWBs) have emerged as a novel and non-invasive sampling device for assessing personal external exposure. In this study, SWBs were used as a proxy to estimate personal dermal adsorption (EDdermal) to PLs and OPFRs in Belgian participants for one week; four morning urine samples were also collected and analyzed for estimated daily intake (EDI). The results of the SWBs samples showed that all the participants were exposed to these chemicals, and the exposure was found to be highest for the legacy and alternative plasticizers (LP and AP), followed by the legacy and emerging OPFRs (LOPFR and EOPFR). In urine samples, the highest levels were observed for metabolites of diethyl phthalate (DEP), di-isobutyl phthalate (DiBP) and di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP) among LPs and di(2-ethylhexyl) terephthalate (DEHT) for APs. Outliers among the participants indicated that there were other sources of exposure that were not identified. Results showed a significant correlation between EDdermal and EDI for DiBP, tris (2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBOEP) and triphenyl phosphate (TPhP). These correlations indicated their suitability for predicting exposure via SWB monitoring for total chemical exposure. The results of this pilot study advance our understanding of SWB sampling and its relevance for predicting aggregate environmental chemical exposures, while highlighting the potential of SWBs as low-cost, non-invasive personal samplers for future research. This innovative approach has the potential to advance the assessment of environmental exposures and their impact on public health.

Prenatal organophosphate esters exposure and neurodevelopment trajectory in infancy: Evidence from the Shanghai Maternal-Child Pairs Cohort

BACKGROUND

Concerns remain about the neurotoxic properties of the ubiquitous organophosphate esters (OPEs), the replacement of the toxicant polybrominated diphenyl ethers.

OBJECTIVES

We examined the associations of prenatal exposure to OPEs and their mixtures with early-life neurodevelopment trajectories.

METHODS

Totally 1276 mother-child pairs were recruited from the Shanghai Maternal-Child Pairs Cohort. A high-performance liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometer was used to measure the levels of 7 OPEs in cord serum. Ages and Stages Questionnaires was used to examine children's neuropsychological development at 2, 6, 12, and 24 months of age. Group-based trajectory models were applied to derive the neurodevelopmental trajectories. Multiple linear regression and logistic regression model were performed to assess the relationships between OPEs exposure and neurodevelopment and trajectories. Mixtures for widely detected OPEs (n = 4) were investigated using quantile-based g-computation.

RESULTS

Tributyl phosphate (TBP), tris (2-butoxy ethyl) phosphate (TBEP), tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCPP), and 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPP), had detection rates >50 %. TDCPP had the highest median concentration (1.02 μg/L) in cord serum. EHDPP concentrations were negatively associated with scores in most domains at 12 months of age, with effect values (β) ranging from -1.89 to -0.57. EHDPP could negatively affect the total ASQ (OR = 1.07, 95 % CI: 1, 1.15) and gross-motor (OR = 1.09, 95 % CI: 1.02, 1.17) trajectory in infancy. Joint exposure to OPEs was associated with decreased scores in the total ASQ, gross-motor, fine-motor and problem-solving domain of 12-month-old infants, with β ranging from -5.93 to -1.25. In addition, the qgcomp models indicated significant positive associations between the concentrations of OPEs mixtures and risks of the persistently low group of the total ASQ, gross-motor and fine-motor development in early childhood. The impact of OPEs was more pronounced in boys.

DISCUSSION

Our findings suggested OPEs, especially EHDPP, had a persistently negative effect on neurodevelopment during the first 2 years.

Global Trends and Hotspots in Research on the Health Risks of Organophosphate Flame Retardants: A Bibliometric and Visual Analysis

BACKGROUND

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) are compounds with a wide range of industrial and commercial applications and are mainly used as flame retardants and plasticizers. The global consumption of OPFRs has risen rapidly in recent decades, and they have been widely detected in environmental media. Unfortunately, OPFRs have been associated with many adverse health outcomes. The issue of the health risks of OPFRs is attracting increasing attention. Therefore, there is a need to review the current state of research and trends in this field to help researchers and policymakers quickly understand the field, identify new research directions, and allocate appropriate resources for further development of the OPFR health risk research field.

METHODS

This study statistically analyzed 1162 relevant publications included in the Web of Science Core Collection from 2003-2023. The internal and external features of the literature, such as publication trends, countries, authors, journals, and keywords, were quantitatively analyzed and visually presented to identify the research hotspots, compositions, and paradigms of the field and to horizontally and vertically analyze the development trends and structural evolution of the field.

RESULTS

The development of the field can be divided into three stages, and the field entered a period of rapid development in 2016. China (649 papers) is the most prolific country, followed by the United States (188 papers). The authors STAPLETON HM and WANG Y have the highest combined impact. International collaboration between countries and researchers still needs to be strengthened. Science of The Total Environment is the most frequently published journal (162 papers), and Environmental Science and Technology is the most frequently cited journal (5285 citations). Endocrine disruption, developmental toxicity, and neurotoxicity are the health effects of greatest interest.

CONCLUSIONS

Future research is expected to be multidisciplinary, and research hotspots may involve a comprehensive assessment of OPFR exposure in the population, exploration of the mechanisms of endocrine-disrupting effects and in vivo metabolic processes, and examination of the health effects of OPFR metabolites.

Preparation of novel gallic acid-based dummy-template molecularly imprinted polymer adsorbents for rapid adsorption of dibutyl phthalate from water

Phthalate esters (PAEs) are plasticizers widely used in the industry and easily released into the environment, posing a serious threat to human health. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are important as selective adsorbents for the removal of PAEs. In this study, three kinds of mussel-inspired MIPs for the removal of PAEs were first prepared with gallic acid (GA), hexanediamine (HD), tannic acid (TA), and dopamine (DA) under mild conditions. The adsorption results showed that the MIP with low cost derived from GA and HD (GAHD-MIP) obtained the highest adsorption capacity among these materials. Furthermore, 97.43% of equilibrium capacity could be reached within the first 5 min of adsorption. Especially, the dummy template of diallyl phthalate (DAP) with low toxicity was observed to be more suitable to prepare MIPs than dibutyl phthalate (DBP), although DBP was the target of adsorption. The adsorption process was in accordance with the pseudo-second-order kinetics model. In the isotherm analysis, the adsorption behavior agreed with the Freundlich model. Additionally, the material maintained high adsorption performance after 7 cycles of regeneration tests. The GAHD-MIP adsorbents in this study, with low cost, rapid adsorption equilibrium, green raw materials, and low toxicity dummy template, provide a valuable reference for the design and development of new MIPs.

Uptake, translocation, and metabolism of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in plants and health perspective for human: A review

Plant uptake, accumulation, and transformation of organophosphate esters (OPEs) play vital roles in their geochemical cycles and exposure risks. Here we reviewed the recent research advances in OPEs in plants. The mean OPE concentrations based on dry/wet/lipid weight varied in 4.80-3,620/0.287-26.8/12,000-315,000 ng g-1 in field plants, and generally showed positive correlations with those in plant habitats. OPEs with short-chain substituents and high hydrophilicity, particularly the commonly used chlorinated OPEs, showed dominance in most plant samples, whereas some tree barks, fruits, seeds, and roots demonstrated dominance of hydrophobic OPEs. Both hydrophilic and hydrophobic OPEs can enter plants via root and foliar uptake, and the former pathway is mainly passively mediated by various membrane proteins. After entry, different OPEs undergo diverse subcellular distributions and acropetal/basipetal/intergenerational translocations, depending on their physicochemical properties. Hydrophilic OPEs mainly exist in cell sap and show strong transferability, hydrophobic OPEs demonstrate dominant distributions in cell wall and limited migrations owing to the interception of Casparian strips and cell wall. Additionally, plant species, transpiration capacity, growth stages, commensal microorganisms, and habitats also affect OPE uptake and transfer in plants. OPE metabolites derived from various Phase I transformations and Phase II conjugations are increasingly identified in plants, and hydrolysis and hydroxylation are the most common metabolic processes. The metabolisms and products of OPEs are closely associated with their structures and degradation resistance and plant species. In contrast, plant-derived food consumption contributes considerably to the total dietary intakes of OPEs by human, particularly the cereals, and merits specifical attention. Based on the current research limitations, we proposed the research perspectives regarding OPEs in plants, with the emphases on their behavior and fate in field plants, interactions with plant-related microorganisms, multiple uptake pathways and mechanisms, and comprehensive screening analysis and risk evaluation.

Occurrence, bioaccumulation and trophodynamics of organophosphate esters in the marine biota web of Laizhou Bay, Bohai Sea

The trophodynamic of organophosphate esters (OPEs) has not been known well despite their widespread occurrence in the aquatic environments. In this study, ten species of crustacean, seven species of mollusk, and 22 species of fish were collected in the Laizhou Bay (LZB) to examine the occurrence, bioaccumulation, and trophic transfer, and health risk of eight traditional OPEs and three emerging oligomeric OPEs. The results showed that total concentration of OPEs was 2.04 to 28.6 ng g-1 ww in the muscle of crustacean, mollusk, and fish and 2.62 to 60.6 ng g-1 ww in the fish gill. Chlorinated OPEs averagely contributed to over 85% of total OPEs while oligomeric OPEs averagely accounted for approximate 4%. The average log apparent bioaccumulation factor (ABAF) ranged from - 0.4 L kg-1 ww for triethyl phosphate to 2.4 L kg-1 ww for resorcinol-bis (diphenyl) phosphate. Apparent trophic magnification factors (ATMF) of individual OPE were generally less than 1, demonstrating the biodilution effect of the OPEs in the organism web of LZB. Additionally, the log ABAF and ATMF of OPEs were significantly positively correlated to their log Kow but negatively correlated to their biotransformation rate constant (BRC). Therefore, the OPEs with high Kow and low BRC tend to more accumulate in the marine organisms. The health risks associated with OPEs through the consumption of the seafood from the bay were low, even at high exposure scenario.

The dissipation of organophosphate esters mediated by ryegrass root exudate oxalic acid in soil: Analysis of enzymes activities, microorganism

Complex rhizoremediation is the main mechanism of phytoremediation in organic-contaminated soil. Low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs) in root exudates have been shown to increase the bioavailability of contaminants and are essential for promoting the dissipation of contaminants. The effects of root exudates on the dissipation of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in soil are unclear. Consequently, we studied the combined effects of root exudates, soil enzymes and microorganisms on OPEs (tri (1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP) and triphenyl phosphate (TPP)) dissipation through pot experiments. Oxalic acid (OA) was confirmed to be the main component of LMWOAs in root exudates of ryegrass. The existence of OA increased the dissipation rate of OPEs by 6.04%-25.50%. Catalase and dehydrogenase activities were firstly activated and then inhibited in soil. While, urease activity was activated and alkaline phosphatase activity was inhibited during the exposure period. More bacteria enrichment (e.g., Sphingomonas, Pseudomonas, Flavisolibacter, Pontibacter, Methylophilus and Massilia) improved the biodegradation of OPEs. In addition, the transformation paths of OPEs hydrolysis and methylation under the action of root exudates were observed. This study provided theoretical insights into reducing the pollution risk of OPEs in the soil.

Occurrence of organophosphorus flame retardants in Xiangjiang River: Spatiotemporal variations, potential affecting factors, and source apportionment

The environmental occurrence of organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) is receiving increasing attention. However, their distribution in the Xiangjiang River, an important tributary in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, is still uncharacterized, and the potential factors influencing their distribution have not been adequately surveyed. In this study, the occurrence of OPFRs in the Xiangjiang River was comprehensively investigated from upstream to downstream seasonally. Fourteen OPFRs were detected in the sampling area, with a total concentration (∑OPFRs) ranging from 3.16 to 462 ng/L, among which tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate was identified as the primary pollutant (ND - 379 ng/L). Specifically, ∑OPFRs were significantly lower in the wet season than in the dry season, which may be due to the dilution effect of river flow and enhanced volatilization caused by higher water temperatures. Additionally, Changsha (during the dry season) and Zhuzhou (during the wet season) exhibited higher pollution levels than other cities. According to the Redundancy analysis, water quality parameters accounted for 35.7% of the variation in the occurrence of OPFRs, in which temperature, ammonia nitrogen content, dissolved oxygen, and chemical oxygen demand were identified as the potential influencing factors, accounting for 28.1%, 27.2%, 24.1%, and 11.5% of the total variation, respectively. The results of the Positive Matrix Factorization analysis revealed that transport and industrial emissions were the major sources of OPFRs in Xiangjiang River. In addition, there were no high-ecological risk cases for any individual OPFRs, although tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate and tributoxyethyl phosphate presented a low-to-medium risk level. And the results of mixture risk quotients indicated that medium-risk sites were concentrated in the Chang-Zhu-Tan region. This study enriches the global data of OPFRs pollution and contributes to the scientific management and control of pollution.

Organophosphate esters in water and air: A minireview of their sources, occurrence, and air-water exchange

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) have received considerable attention in environmental research due to their extensive production, wide-ranging applications, prevalent presence, potential for bioaccumulation, and associated ecological and health concerns. Low efficiency of OPE removal results in the effluents of wastewater treatment plants emerging as a significant contributor to OPE contamination. Their notable solubility and mobility give OPEs the potential to be transported to coastal ecosystems via river discharge and atmospheric deposition. Previous research has indicated that OPEs have been widely detected in the atmosphere and water bodies. Atmospheric deposition across air-water exchange is the main input route for OPEs into the environment and ecosystems. The main processes that contribute to air-water exchange is air-water diffusion, dry deposition, wet deposition, and the air-water volatilization process. The present minireview links together the source, occurrence, and exchange of OPEs in water and air, integrates the occurrence and profile data, and summarizes their air-water exchange in the environment.

Temporal evolution of plastic additive contents over the last decades in two major European rivers (Rhone and Rhine) from sediment cores analyses

Although global plastic distribution is at the heart of 21st century environmental concerns, little information is available concerning how organic plastic additives contaminate freshwater sediments, which are often subject to strong anthropogenic pressure. Here, sediment core samples were collected in the Rhone and the Rhine watersheds (France), dated using 137Cs and 210Pbxs methods and analysed for nine phthalates (PAEs) and seven organophosphate esters (OPEs). The distribution of these organic contaminants was used to establish a chronological archive of plastic additive pollution from 1860 (Rhine) and 1930 (Rhone) until today. Sediment grain size and parameters related to organic matter (OM) were also measured as potential factors that may affect the temporal distribution of OPEs and PAEs in sediments. Our results show that OPE and PAE levels increased continuously in Rhone and Rhine sediments since the first records. In both rivers, ∑PAEs levels (from 9.1 ± 1.7 to 487.3 ± 27.0 ng g-1 dry weight (dw) ± standard deviation and from 4.6 ± 1.3 to 65.2 ± 11.2 ng g-1 dw, for the Rhine and the Rhone rivers, respectively) were higher than ∑OPEs levels (from 0.1 ± 0.1 to 79.1 ± 13.7 ng g-1 dw and from 0.6 ± 0.1 to 17.8 ± 2.3 ng g-1 dw, for Rhine and Rhone rivers, respectively). In both rivers, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) was the most abundant PAE, followed by diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP), while tris (2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP) was the most abundant OPE. No relationship was found between granulometry and additives concentrations, while organic matter helps explain the vertical distribution of PAEs and OPEs in the sediment cores. This study thus establishes a temporal trajectory of PAEs and OPEs contents over the last decades, leading to a better understanding of historical pollution in these two Western European rivers.

Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) exposure inhibits the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), mesoderm differentiation, and cardiovascular development in early chicken embryos

Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) is an organophosphorus flame retardant used worldwide and has been detected in the tissues and eggs of wild birds. Our previous study reported that exposure to TCEP induced developmental delay and cardiovascular dysfunction with attenuated heart rate and vasculogenesis in early chicken embryos. This study aimed to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying the cardiovascular effects of TCEP on chicken embryos using cardiac transcriptome analysis and to examine whether TCEP exposure affects epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and mesoderm differentiation during gastrulation. Transcriptome analysis revealed that TCEP exposure decreased the expression of cardiac conduction-related genes and transcription factors on day 5 of incubation. In extraembryonic blood vessels, the expression levels of genes related to fibroblast growth factor (FGF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were significantly reduced by TCEP exposure and vasculogenesis was suppressed. TCEP exposure also attenuated Snail family transcriptional repressor 2 (SNAI2) and T-box transcription factor T (TBXT) signaling in the chicken primitive streak, indicating that TCEP inhibits EMT and mesoderm differentiation during gastrulation at the early developmental stage. These effects on EMT and mesoderm differentiation may be related to subsequent phenotypic defects, including suppression of heart development and blood vessel formation.

Leaching kinetics and bioaccumulation potential of additive-derived organophosphate esters in microplastics

Considerable research has been conducted to evaluate microplastics (MPs) as vehicles for the transfer of hazardous pollutants in organisms. However, little effort has been devoted to the chemical release of hazardous additive-derived pollutants from MPs in gut simulations. This study looked at the leaching kinetics of organophosphate esters (OPFRs) from polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS) MPs in the presence of gut surfactants, specifically sodium taurocholate, at two biologically relevant temperatures for marine organisms. Diffusion coefficients of OPFRs ranged from 1.71 × 10-20 to 4.04 × 10-18 m2 s-1 in PP and 2.91 × 10-18 to 1.51 × 10-15 m2 s-1 in PS. The accumulation factors for OPFRs in biota-plastic and biota-sediment interactions ranged from 1.52 × 10-3-69.1 and 0.02-0.7, respectively. Based on B3LYP/6-31G (d,p) calculations, the biodynamic model analysis revealed a slight increase in the bioaccumulation of OPFRs at a minor dose of 0.05% MPs. However, at higher concentrations (0.5% and 5% MPs), there was a decrease in bioaccumulation compared to the lower concentration for most OPFR compounds. In general, the ingestion of PE MPs notably contributed to the bioaccumulation of OPFRs in lugworms, whereas the contribution of PP and PS MPs was minimal. This could vary among sites exhibiting varying levels of MP concentrations or MPs displaying stronger affinities towards chemicals.

Discovering Novel Organophosphorus Compounds in Wastewater Treatment Plant Effluents through Suspect Screening and Nontarget Analysis

Limited knowledge on the structure of emerging organophosphorus compounds (OPCs) hampers our comprehensive understanding of their environmental occurrence and potential risks. Through suspect and nontarget screening, combining data-dependent acquisition, data-independent acquisition, and parallel reaction monitoring modes, we identified 60 OPCs (17 traditional and 43 emerging compounds) in effluents of 14 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Beijing and Qinghai, China. These OPCs comprise 26 organophosphate triesters, 17 organophosphate diesters, 6 organophosphonates, 7 organothiophosphate esters, and 4 other OPCs. Notably, 14 suspect OPCs were newly identified in WWTP effluents, and 16 nontarget OPCs were newly discovered in environmental matrices. Specifically, the cyclic phosphonate, (5-ethyl-2-methyl-1,3,2-dioxaphosphorinan-5-yl)methyl dimethyl phosphonate P-oxide (PMMMPn), consistently appeared in all WWTP effluents, with semiquantitative concentrations ranging from 44.4 to 282 ng/L. Its analogue, di-PMMMPn, presented in 93% of wastewater samples. Compositional differences between the WWTP effluents of two cities were mainly attributed to emerging OPCs. Hazard and ecological risk assessment underscored the substantial contribution of chlorinated organophosphate esters and organothiophosphate esters to overall risks of OPCs in WWTP effluents. This study provides the most comprehensive OPC profiles in WWTP effluents to date, highlighting the need for further research on their occurrence, fate, and risks, particularly for chlorinated OPCs.

Bioactivity assessment of organophosphate flame retardants via a dose-dependent yeast functional genomics approach

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) have been widely detected in multiple environment media and have many adverse effects with complex toxicity mechanisms. However, the early molecular responses to OPFRs have not been fully elucidated, thereby making it difficult to assess their risks accurately. In this work, we systematically explored the point of departure (POD) of biological pathways at genome-wide level perturbed by 14 OPFRs with three substituents (alkyl, halogen, and aryl) using a dose-dependent functional genomics approach in Saccharomyces cerevisiae at 24 h exposure. Firstly, our results demonstrated that the overall biological potency at gene level (PODDRG20) ranged from 0.013 to 35.079 μM for 14 OPFRs, especially the tributyl phosphate (TnBP) exhibited the strongest biological potency with the least PODDRG20. Secondly, we found that structural characteristics of carbon number and logKow were significantly negatively correlated with POD, and carbon number and logKow also significantly affected lipid metabolism associated processes. Thirdly, these early biological pathways of OPFRs toxification were found to be involved in lipid metabolism, oxidative stress, DNA damage, MAPK signaling pathway, and amino acid and carbohydrate metabolism, among which the lipid metabolism was the most sensitive molecular response perturbed by most OPFRs. More importantly, we identified one resistant mutant strain with knockout of ERG2 (YMR202W) gene participated in steroid biosynthesis pathway, which can serve as a key yeast strain of OPFRs toxification. Overall, our study demonstrated an effective platform for accurately assessing OPFRs risks and provided a basis for further green OPFRs development.

Curcumin attenuates diphenyl phosphate-induced apoptosis in GC-2spd(ts) cells through activated autophagy via the Nrf2/P53 pathway

Diphenyl phosphate (DPhP) is one of the frequently used derivatives of aryl phosphate esters and is used as a plasticizer in industrial production. Like other plasticizers, DPhP is not chemically bound and can easily escape into the environment, thereby affecting human health. DPhP has been associated with developmental toxicity, reproductive toxicity, neurodevelopmental toxicity, and interference with thyroid homeostasis. However, understanding of the underlying mechanism of DPhP on the reproductive toxicity of GC-2spd(ts) cells remains limited. For the first time, we investigated the effect of DPhP on GC-2spd(ts) cell apoptosis. By decreasing nuclear factor erythroid-derived 2-related factor (Nrf2)/p53 signaling, DPhP inhibited autophagy and promoted apoptosis. DPhP reduced total antioxidant capacity and nuclear Nrf2 and its downstream target gene expression. In addition, we investigated the protective effects of Curcumin (Cur) against DPhP toxicity. Cur attenuated the DPhP-induced rise in p53 expression while increasing Nrf2 expression. Cur inhibited DPhP-induced apoptosis in GC-2spd(ts) cells by activating autophagy via Nrf2/p53 signaling. In conclusion, our study provides new insights into the reproductive toxicity hazards of DPhP and demonstrates that Cur is an important therapeutic agent for alleviating DPhP-induced reproductive toxicity by regulating Nrf2/p53 signaling.

Effects of uptake pathways on the accumulation, translocation, and metabolism of OPEs in rice: An emphasis on foliar uptake

The often-overlooked importance of foliar absorption on the plant uptake of organic pollutants was investigated by an exposure chamber test. Rice seedlings were exposed to organophosphate esters (OPEs) through 8 scenarios arranged from 3 major uptake pathways: root uptake via solution, foliar uptake via gas, and foliar uptake via particles, to identify the contributions of these 3 uptake pathways and their influences on the translocation and metabolism of OPEs in rice. The concentration of OPEs in rice tissues showed an "additive effect" with the increase of exposure pathways. OPEs in rice shoots mainly originated from foliar uptake through particle (29.6 %-63.5 %) and gaseous (28.5 %-49.4 %) absorptions rather than root uptake (7.86 %-24.2 %) under the exposure condition. In comparison with stomal absorption, wax layer penetration was the main pathway for most OPEs to enter into leaves, especially for those compounds with high octanol-air partition coefficients. Although the subcellular distributions of OPEs in the rice tissues of the foliar exposure were slightly different from those of the root exposure, hydrophobic OPEs were mainly stored in the cell wall with hydrophilic OPEs mainly in the cytosol. The translocation of OPEs from the exposed tissue to the unexposed tissue were significantly negatively correlated with their octanol-water partition coefficients, but their basipetal translocation were limited. The result suggested that the translocation of OPEs within rice is prioritized over their degradation. This study deepens our understanding of the processes behind OPE uptake by rice and highlights the importance of foliar uptake, especially for those via particle absorption.

Distribution and adsorption-desorption of organophosphate esters from land to sea in the sediments of the Beibu Gulf, South China Sea: Impact of seagoing river input

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) have been a class of emerging environmental contaminants. However, studies on their environmental behavior, specifically their adsorption-desorption behavior between sediment and seawater in estuarine and coastal areas, remain limited. To address this gap, our study focused on investigating the levels and behavior of 11 OPEs in sediment samples collected from the Beibu Gulf, South China Sea, encompassing estuaries and coastal regions. The total concentrations of 11 OPEs (Σ11OPEs) in the sediments exhibit a significant decrease in summer, both in seagoing rivers (4.67 ± 2.74 ng/g dw) and the coastal zone (5.11 ± 3.71 ng/g dw), compared to winter levels in seagoing rivers (8.26 ± 4.70 ng/g dw) and the coastal zone (7.71 ± 3.83 ng/g dw). Chlorinated OPEs dominated the sediments, constituting 63 %-76 % of the total. Particularly, port and mariculture areas showed the highest levels of OPEs. Through load estimation analysis, it was revealed that the sedimentary OPEs in Qinzhou Bay (221 ± 128 kg) had the highest load, with input from the Qin River identified as a significant source. Chlorinated OPEs showed a trend of desorption from sediments to the water column with increasing salinity, emphasizing the crucial role of land-based OPEs input through suspended particulate matter in rivers as a pathway to the ocean. The impact of strong flow in estuarine environments was highlighted, as it can scour sediments, generate suspended sediments, and release OPEs into the water bodies. Additionally, the results of the ecological risk assessment indicated that most of the OPEs posed low-risk levels. However, attention is warranted for the contamination levels of some chlorinated OPEs, emphasizing the need for ongoing monitoring and assessment.

Pollution characteristics and affecting factors of phthalate esters in agricultural soils in mainland China

Phthalate esters (PAEs), the most commonly produced and used plasticizers, are widely used in plastic products and agroecosystems, posing risks to agricultural products and human health. However, current research on PAE pollution characteristics in agricultural soils in China is not comprehensive; affecting factors and relationships with microplastics and plasticizer organophosphate esters have not been sufficiently considered. In this study, farmland soil samples were collected with field questionnaires on a national scale across mainland China. The results showed that the detection rate of PAEs was 100% and the Σ16PAEs concentrations were 23.5 - 903 μg/kg. The level of PAEs was highest in the greenhouse, and significantly higher than that in mulched farmland (p < 0.05). The PAE concentration in northwestern China was the lowest among different physical geographic zones. PAEs in farmlands posed a low cancer risk to Chinese people. PAE pollution in farmlands was significantly (p < 0.05) affected by agronomic measures (such as disposal method), environmental factors, and socioeconomic factors. Overall, PAEs were significantly and positively correlated (p < 0.05) with organophosphate esters but not with microplastics. This study aims to provide scientific data for relevant prevention and control policies, as well as actionable recommendations for pollution reduction.

Insights into the occurrence, spatial distribution, and ecological implications of organophosphate triesters in surface sediments from polluted urban rivers across China

Organophosphate triesters (tri-OPEs) are a kind of widespread contaminants in the world, particularly in China, which is a major producer and user of tri-OPEs. However, tri-OPE pollution in urban river sediments in China remains unclear. In current work, we carried out the first nationwide investigation to comprehensively monitor 10 conventional and five emerging tri-OPEs in sediments of 173 black-odorous urban rivers throughout China. Concentrations of 10 conventional and five emerging tri-OPEs were 3.8-1240 ng/g dw (mean: 253 ng/g dw) and 0.21-1107 ng/g dw (68 ng/g dw), respectively, and significantly differed among the cities sampled but generally decreased from Northeast and East China to Central and West China. These spatial patterns suggest that tri-OPE pollution was mainly from local sources and was controlled by the industrial and economic development levels in these four areas, as indicated by the significant correlations between tri-OPE concentrations and gross domestic production, gross industrial output, and daily wastewater treatment capacity. Although the tri-OPE composition varied spatially at different sites, which indicated different tri-OPE input patterns, it was commonly dominated by tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate, tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate, and tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (conventional tri-OPEs) and bisphenol A-bis(diphenyl phosphate) and isodecyl diphenyl phosphate (emerging tri-OPEs). A risk assessment indicated that tri-OPEs in most sampling sediments had a low to moderate risk to aquatic organisms.

The transport and distribution of novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) and organophosphate esters (OPEs) in soils and moss along mountain valleys in the Himalayas

Although the Himalayas act as a natural barrier, studies have demonstrated that certain traditional persistent organic pollutants (POPs) can be transported into the Tibetan Plateau (TP) through the mountain valleys. Herein, we selected five mountain valleys in the Himalayas to investigate novel flame retardants (NFRs), as representative novel POPs, their concentration, distribution, transport behavior, potential sources and ecological risk. The results revealed that total concentrations of 7 novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) ranged from 4.89 to 2853 pg/g dry weight (dw) in soil and from not detected (ND) to 4232 pg/g dw in moss. Additionally, total concentrations of 10 organophosphate esters (OPEs) ranged from ND to 84798 pg/g dw in soil. Among the NFRs, decabromodiphenylethane (DBDPE) and tri-phenyl phosphate (TPhP) were the predominant compounds. NBFRs and OPEs concentrations were slightly higher than those in the polar regions. The correlation between different compounds and altitude varies in different areas, indicating that the NFRs distribution in the mountain valleys result from a combination of long-range transport and local sources. The ecological risk assessment using risk quotient (RQs) revealed that TPhP and tris (2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCIPP) exhibited medium or high risks at some sites. This study sheds light on the transport pathways and environmental behaviors of the NFRs in the valleys and highlights the need for increased attention to the ecological risks posed by OPEs in the TP.

Typical neonicotinoids and organophosphate esters, but not their metabolites, adversely impact early human development by activating BMP4 signaling

Recent studies have highlighted the presence of potentially harmful chemicals, such as neonicotinoids (NEOs) and organophosphate esters (OPEs), in everyday items. Despite their potential threats to human health, these dangers are often overlooked. In a previous study, we discovered that NEOs and OPEs can negatively impact development, but liver metabolism can help mitigate their harmful effects. In our current research, our objective was to investigate the toxicity mechanisms associated with NEOs, OPEs, and their liver metabolites using a human embryonic stem cell-based differentiation model that mimics early embryonic development. Our transcriptomics data revealed that NEOs and OPEs significantly influenced the expression of hundreds of genes, disrupted around 100 biological processes, and affected two signaling pathways. Notably, the BMP4 signaling pathway emerged as a key player in the disruption caused by exposure to these pollutants. Both NEOs and OPEs activated BMP4 signaling, potentially impacting early embryonic development. Interestingly, we observed that treatment with a human liver S9 fraction, which mimics liver metabolism, effectively reduced the toxic effects of these pollutants. Most importantly, it reversed the adverse effects dependent on the BMP4 pathway. These findings suggest that normal liver function plays a crucial role in detoxifying environmental pollutants and provides valuable experimental insights for addressing this issue.

Occurrence, distribution, sources, and risk assessment of organophosphate esters in typical coastal aquaculture waters of China

This study monitored 20 organophosphate esters (OPEs) in water and sediment from three typical mariculture bases (Yunxi Marine Ranching (YX), Hangzhou Bay (HZB), and Zhelin Bay (ZLB)) and Meiliang Bay (MLB) of Taihu Lake in China, focusing on the spatial distribution and sources of OPEs. Moreover, the occurrence and risk of OPEs in fishes from ZLB were evaluated. The ∑OPE concentrations in waters followed the order MLB (591 ng/L) > YX (102 ng/L) > HZB (70.0 ng/L) > ZLB (37.4 ng/L), with tri(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCIPP), triethyl phosphate (TEP), and tri(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) being the dominant OPEs. Significantly higher ∑OPE concentrations were found in sediment in MLB compared to the other three areas with similar levels. The decreasing concentrations of OPEs from nearshore to offshore areas in HZB and MLB indicated that terrigenous input is the main source of OPEs. The even distribution of OPEs in YX and ZLB combined with PCA analysis suggested ship traffic or aquaculture activities are also potential sources. The ∑OPE concentrations in fishes ranged from 0.551-2.45 ng/g wet weight, with TCIPP, tri-phenyl phosphate (TPHP), and TCEP being the main OPEs. Hydrophobicity was a key factor affecting the sediment-water distribution coefficients and the bioaccumulation factors of OPEs. The human exposure to OPEs through consumption of fishes from ZLB had a low health risk.
