Chemical assessment of marine sediments in vicinity of Norwegian fish farms - A pilot study

Exposure of female lobsters to sediments spiked with emamectin benzoate: Effects on eggs and larvae early development

The salmon aquaculture industry is an important economic activity established on both the west and east coast of Canada. To control sea lice infestations, in-feed products like emamectin benzoate (EMB) are widely used. Due to its low solubility and persistence EMB can accumulate in marine sediments and be potentially bioavailable to non-target organisms from months to years. The American lobster (Homarus americanus) is a key species in the Northwest Atlantic with high economic and ecological value. It may be exposed to therapeutants considering lobster habitats overlap with aquaculture locations requiring a better understanding of the potential impact of these therapeutants through varied pathways of exposure. In this study, we investigated the exposure of gravid female lobsters to EMB spiked sediment to mimic the likely presence of these females at aquaculture sites for a 10-day period. We completed testing by assessing EMB effects on adult molting and quality, embryo hatching rates, and larval offspring quality and larval molting. Our results show that a single, 10-day exposure of ovigerous females to EMB concentrations higher than environmentally relevant values did not affect females or their offspring.

Considerations and data update for the inference of environmental quality standards for two avermectins widely used in salmon aquaculture

We have updated and reviewed toxicity data for Emamectin benzoate (EMB) and Ivermectin (IVER), two in-feed drugs used to treat sea lice in farmed Atlantic salmon, and inferred new Environmental Quality Standards (EQS) using a deterministic approach or Species Sensitivity Distributions (SSDs) based on available data. We used a SSD model averaging approach and inferred a water acute EQS value of 24.9 ng/L (SSD) for EMB, while previously established chronic water EQS of 0.17 ng/L and sediment benthic EQS of 131 ng/kg dry weight remained unchanged. For IVER, both a water acute EQS of 8.04 ng/L and a chronic water EQS of 3.98 ng/L were inferred using SSDs as well as a benthic EQS of 290 ng/kg dry weight using a deterministic approach. In light of the lack of solubility and tendency of both avermectins to sorb to material benthic EQSs remain the most relevant value to consider for regulators.

Anthropogenic disturbances influence mineral and elemental constituents of freshwater lake sediments

Lake sediments can provide valuable insights into anthropogenic disturbances such as intensive aquaculture and land use changes. These disturbances often manifest as elevated levels of nutrients and elements within the sediments. This paper uses several analytical techniques, i.e., FTIR (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction), EDS (energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy), and SEM (scanning electron microscopy), to examine the elemental constituents of lake sediments, along with their relative mineral abundances and surface morphology. The selected freshwater lakes are from the Central Gangetic Plain. The analysis provides a "fingerprint" of geogenic and biogenic mineral constituents of the sediments. Physicochemical, mineralogical, and elemental analysis shows that intensive aquaculture activities in lake alter the sediment chemistry as evidenced by the increase in pH, organic carbon, organic matter, and total phosphorus which is not observed in the lake where aquaculture is prohibited. Freshwater lake sediment is characterized by a high content of biogenic silica and carbonate minerals. The variations in sediment nutrients and mineral fluxes of the selected lakes are mainly attributed to diverse anthropogenic pressures, differences in lake productivity, and the overall ecological condition of the lakes. In the selected three lakes, major variation was reported in the autochthonous sediments in comparison to the allochthonous sediments. The study concludes that catchment and biotic deposit variations in the lakes cannot be evened out by in-lake mixing mechanisms due to variations in the terrigenous and pelagic deposits of the lake. The results highlight the importance of studying annual fluctuations and spatial variations in geogenic and biogenic mineral particle fluxes in lakes. Such investigations provide valuable insights into the annual dynamics of minerals within lakes, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of their behavior and distribution.

Marine Pollution and Advances in Biomonitoring in Cartagena Bay in the Colombian Caribbean

Coastal zones sustain extensive biodiversity, support key processes for ocean dynamics, and influence the balance of the global environment. They also provide resources and services to communities, determine their culture, and are the basis for their economic growth. Cartagena Bay in the Colombian Caribbean is the place of the establishment of one of the country's main cities, which has a great historical and tourist attraction, and it is also the location of the main commercial port and a great variety of industries. Historically, it has been affected by several environmental impacts and intense pollution. This situation has gained the attention of different researchers, so herein is presented a literature review with a systematic approach using RStudio's bibliometrix on the presence of pollutants and the impact on biodiversity in recent decades, providing a critical analysis of the state of Cartagena Bay and its future needs to ensure its recovery and conservation. In addition, the socioeconomic dynamics related to the environmental state of Cartagena Bay are presented from the framework drivers, pressures, status, impacts, and responses (DPSIR). The update and critical understanding of the sources, fate, and effects of pollution are important not only for the knowledge of the status of this singular ecosystem but also to encourage future research and entrench evidence to support decision makers' actions. This review highlights that several pollutants that have been detected exceeding sediment quality guidelines, like As, Cd, Hg, and PAH, are also reported to bioaccumulate and cause damage throughout the trophic levels of the coastal environment. In addition, the potential use of sentinel species and biomarkers for their monitoring is discussed. Finally, the factors that cause pollution and threaten the state of the bay continue to exert pressure and impact; thus, there is a call for the further monitoring of this ecosystem and the strengthening of policies and regulations.

Natural Variations in the Benthic Environment and Bacterial Communities of Coastal Sediments around Aquaculture Farms in South Korea

The aim of this study was to examine the possible seasonal variations in the nutrients (dissolved inorganic nitrogen-DIN and phosphorus) and benthic bacterial communities in marine aquaculture surrounding sediments. The study areas were Geoje, Tongyeong, and Changwon bays in Korea, which are famous for oysters (Magallana gigas), Halocynthia roretzi, and warty sea squirt (Styela clava) farming, respectively. The study sites included semi-enclosed coastal areas with a low seawater exchange rate. Subtidal sediment samples were collected seasonally from the area surrounding the aquacultures between April and December 2020. Seasonal variations in nutrients were observed, with the highest concentration of DIN in August. For phosphorus, site-specific variations were also observed. To investigate the variations in benthic bacterial communities, the advanced technique of 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing was applied, and the results indicated a seasonal variation pattern and predominance of Proteobacteria (59.39-69.73%), followed by Bacteroidetes (6.55-12.85%) and Chloroflexi (2.04-4.50%). This study provides a reference for future studies on natural variations in the benthic environment and bacterial communities in the areas surrounding aquacultures.

Relationship between in feed drugs, antibiotics and organic enrichment in marine sediments at Canadian Atlantic salmon aquaculture sites

The presence of in-feed anti-sea lice drugs and their relationship with organic enrichment is poorly understood in sediment surrounding salmon farms. Using data from an aquaculture monitoring program (2018-2020), we describe this relationship at ten sites in four Canadian provinces. Three anti-sea lice pesticides (lufenuron, teflubenzuron, emamectin benzoate and metabolite desmethyl emamectin benzoate), and one antibiotic (oxytetracycline) were detected. Concentrations were often below limits of quantification. Values are also lower than those reported in other aquaculture salmon-producing countries. Highest concentrations, along with organic enrichment, were observed ~200 m of cages with lower concentrations detected up to 1.5 km away. Most samples had at least two drugs present: 75.2 % (British Columbia), 91.4 % (Newfoundland), and 54.8 % (New Brunswick/Nova Scotia) highlighting the potential for cumulative effects. Emamectin benzoate and oxytetracycline were detected four and three years respectively after last known treatments, demonstrating the need for research on overall persistence of compounds.

Metabolization of emamectin benzoate into desmethyl emamectin benzoate in spiked marine sediments

Emamectin benzoate (EMB) (4″deoxy- 4″-epi-methylaminoavermectin) is a pesticide developed to control pests on various crops, and in forestry. It is also used in salmon aquaculture to control sea lice infestations as an in-feed therapeutant. Little is known about EMB metabolites and potential associated toxicities in marine sediments. In this study, we used natural marine sediments (sand and mud) fortified at an EMB concentration of 60 ppb (wet weight). Results show an almost immediate transformation of EMB to Desmethyl EMB (DES) with no increased rates of metabolization when stored sediment samples were incubated for up to 16 h. The transformation ratio of EMB to DES represented between 0.16 and 0.39% of EMB; values are lower than what has been observed in fish tissue. Data suggest that DES is generated through both abiotic (tested after autoclaving marine sediments) and biological processes. Further work on freshly sampled marine sediments with EMB deposits, different organic regimes, and a detailed assessment of active bacterial communities are necessary to better evaluate the EMB to DES rate of transformation around aquaculture sites.

Environmental Concerns for Sustainable Mariculture in Coastal Waters of South-Central Vietnam

Mariculture provides an increasing seafood supply to a growing population. It also brings unintended consequences for the environment, resources, and sustainable development. In an attempt to evaluate the impacts of intensive mariculture of lobster in cages, the water quality and sediment quality in three South-Central regions of Vietnam, Xuan Dai Bay, Van Phong Bay, and Cam Ranh Bay, were monitored from April 2019 to May 2020. In each bay, two stations in the farming areas were compared to a non-farming reference station. The result showed no significant differences in the water quality parameters among the stations within each bay and between the bays. However, sediment quality noticeably differed between sites within each bay and between the bays. The accumulation of the observed parameters of sediment in farming areas was higher than in non-farming areas. In the Cam Ranh Bay, the concentration of organic carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus in the sediment in farming areas was approximately 1.4 times higher compared to non-farming areas. Similar results were found in Van Phong Bay and Xuan Dai Bay with different magnitudes. Additionally, the difference in the sulfide concentration in the sediment of Van Phong Bay was notable for its better environmental quality than the other two. The findings indicated that mariculture wastes would accumulate in the sediment, and decompose over time, causing sediment degradation, which may affect the benthic biota in coastal waters.

Environmental impact of fish farming: assessment of metal contamination and sediment geochemistry at three aquaculture areas from the eastern Aegean coast

Metal contamination and geochemistry of surface sediments were assessed at three aquaculture sites from the eastern Aegean coast. The chlorophyll degradation products and organic carbon levels were used as indicators of eutrophication status. In Akköy, higher Hg, Pb, and Cd levels were observed around the cages, while maximum concentrations of other elements were determined at stations situated near the Büyük Menderes River estuary. Metal concentrations were less than the central Aegean coast background levels other than Zn, Ni, and Cr in Akköy. Several approximations have been utilized to evaluate potential toxicity of sediments and sediment quality guidelines (SQG) were used to estimate the risks for aquatic life. Ni was the only metal with concentrations exceeding all SQG values, which indicates the highest adverse biological effect in Ildır, Akköy, and occasionally toxic in Güllük. Based on Q_PEL and Q_TEL, Ni and Cr were the predominant metal contaminants in all areas. Similarly, Cr and Ni account for the most of the all sediment toxicity in the aquaculture areas according to toxic risk index. It is concluded that sediments around the fish farms are affected by growing input of elements because of aquaculture activity. The levels of chlorophyll degradation products showed oligotrophic and mesotrophic conditions in the three studied aquaculture areas.

Hazardous substances in the sediments and their pathways from potential sources in the eastern Gulf of Finland

Contamination by hazardous substances is one of the main environmental problems in the eastern Gulf of Finland, Baltic Sea. A trilateral effort to sample and analyse heavy metals (HMs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and organotins from bottom sediments in 2019-2020 were conducted along with harvesting historical data in Russian, Estonian and Finnish waters. We suggest that the input of organotins still occurs along the ship traffic routes. The tributyltin content exceeded the established quality criteria up to more than 300 times. High contamination by PAHs found near the ports, most likely originate from incomplete fuel incineration processes. The Neva River Estuary and Luga Bay might potentially suffer from severe cadmium contamination. The high ecological risk attributed to the HMs was detected at deep offshore areas. The simulated accumulation pattern qualitatively agrees with field observations of HMs in sediments, demonstrating the potential of numerical tools to tackle the hazardous substances problems.

Assessing trace-elements as indicators of marine finfish aquaculture across three distinct Canadian coastal regions

Several trace-elements have been identified as indicators of finfish aquaculture organic enrichment. In this study, sediment sampling at finfish farms was completed as part of an Aquaculture Monitoring Program in three distinct Canadian regions. Despite diverse datasets, multivariate analyses show a consistent clustering of known direct (Cu and Zn) and indirect (Cd, Mo and U) tracers of aquaculture activities with sediment organic matter (OM) and/or total dissolved sulfides concentrations. OM content was also a predictor of Cu, Zn, Mo and U concentrations according to decision tree analyses. Distance from cages did not emerge as a strong driver of differences among sampling points; however, a tendency towards negative associations is clear especially for Zn. Enriched stations as determined after geochemical normalization were mostly localized within 150 m of net-pens. Selected trace-elements (in particular Zn) can be useful indicators of aquaculture organic enrichment in different ecosystems and valuable tools for monitoring programs.

Spatial distribution, deposition flux, and environmental impact of typical persistent organic pollutants in surficial sediments in the Eastern China Marginal Seas (ECMSs)

High emissions of synthetic compounds are damaging the marine environment and threatening human health. This study represents the first extensive and comprehensive analysis of three typical persistent organic pollutants (POPs), i.e., organochlorine pesticides (n = 228), perfluoroalkyl substances (n = 202), and short-chain chlorinated paraffins (n = 162), using a highly resolved spatial dataset. The results revealed the complex distribution of POPs in the Eastern China Marginal Seas (ECMSs). POPs in the surface sediments of the ECMSs showed spatial heterogeneity, with high levels observed mainly in areas with fine-grained sediments (e.g., the Yellow River and Changjiang River estuaries and the central south Yellow Sea). Strong positive correlations were identified between POP concentration and sediment grain size/components/longitude/latitude in the ECMSs, suggesting that POP distribution was significantly influenced by river input and regional hydrodynamics. The annual deposition fluxes of POPs in the ECMSs were also calculated and high values were recorded in the Yellow River Estuary and East China Sea. Human-induced changes in the catchments could affect the fate of POPs in the ECMSs and other river-dominated marginal seas worldwide. Our findings highlight concerns regarding local aquaculture and provide a basis for government decision-making. We also suggest the need for increased attention to be paid to the effects of marine organic pollution on aquaculture on a global scale.
