Removal of bisphenol A by waste zero-valent iron regulating microbial community in sequencing batch biofilm reactor

Cd2+ enhancing the bromination of bisphenol A in Brassica chinensis L.: Pathways and mechanisms

Traditional heavy metal pollution, such as cadmium, impacts the transformation and risks of bisphenol pollutants (like bisphenol A, BPA), in plants, especially due to the ubiquitous presence of bromide ion. Although it has been discovered that the bromination of phenolic pollutants occurs in plants, thereby increasing the associated risks, the influence and mechanisms of bromination under complex contamination conditions involving both heavy metals and phenolic compounds remain poorly understood. This study addresses the issue by exposing Brassica chinensis L. to cadmium ion (Cd2+, 25-100 μM), with the hydroponic solution containing BPA (15 mg/L) and bromide ion (0.5 mM) in this work. It was observed that Cd2+ primarily enhanced the bromination of BPA by elevating the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the activity of peroxidase (POD) in Brassica chinensis L. The variety of bromination products within Brassica chinensis L. increased as the concentration of Cd2+ rose from 25 to 100 μM. The substitution positions of bromine were determined using Gaussian calculations and mass spectrometry analysis. The toxicity of bromination products derived from BPA was observed to increase based on Ecological Structure-Activity Relationships analysis and HepG2 cytotoxicity assays. This study provides new insights into the risks and health hazards associated with cadmium pollution, particularly its role in enhancing the bromination of bisphenol pollutants in plants.

Degradation of different wastewater by a biological sponge iron system: microbial growth and influencing factors

The bio-ZVI process has undergone widespread development in wastewater treatment in recent years. However, there has been limited examination of the growth and degradation characteristics of functional microorganisms within the system. In the present research, strains were isolated and identified from the bio-ZVI system constructed by sponge iron (encoded as SFe-M). The consistency of operating conditions in treating different wastewater was explored. Three SFe-acclimated microorganisms exhibiting characteristics of degrading organic pollutants and participating in the nitrogen removal process were isolated. The adaptation time of these microorganisms prolonged as the substrate toxicity increased, while the pollutant degradation was related to their metabolic rate in the logarithmic phase. All these functional bacteria exhibited the ability to treat wastewater in a wide pH range (5-8). However, the improper temperature (such as 10 °C and 40 °C) significantly inhibited their growth, and the optimal working temperature was identified as 30 °C. The iron dosage had a significant impact on these function bacteria, ranging from 1 g L-1 to 150 g L-1. It was inferred that the SFe-acclimated microorganisms are capable of resisting the poison of excessive iron, that is, they all have strong adaptability. The results provide compelling evidence for further understanding of the degradation mechanism involved in the bio-ZVI process.

Bisphenol A contamination in aquatic environments: a review of sources, environmental concerns, and microbial remediation

The production of polycarbonate, a high-performance transparent plastic, employs bisphenol A, which is a prominent endocrine-disrupting compound. Polycarbonates are frequently used in the manufacturing of food, bottles, storage containers for newborns, and beverage packaging materials. Global production of BPA in 2022 was estimated to be in the region of 10 million tonnes. About 65-70% of all bisphenol A is used to make polycarbonate plastics. Bisphenol A leaches from improperly disposed plastic items and enters the environment through wastewater from plastic-producing industries, contaminating, sediments, surface water, and ground water. The concentration BPA in industrial and domestic wastewater ranges from 16 to 1465 ng/L while in surface water it has been detected 170-3113 ng/L. Wastewater treatment can be highly effective at removing BPA, giving reductions of 91-98%. Regardless, the remaining 2-9% of BPA will continue through to the environment, with low levels of BPA commonly observed in surface water and sediment in the USA and Europe. The health effects of BPA have been the subject of prolonged public and scientific debate, with PubMed listing more than 17,000 scientific papers as of 2023. Bisphenol A poses environmental and health hazards in aquatic systems, affecting ecosystems and human health. While several studies have revealed its presence in aqueous streams, environmentally sound technologies should be explored for its removal from the contaminated environment. Concern is mostly related to its estrogen-like activity, although it can interact with other receptor systems as an endocrine-disrupting chemical. Present review article encompasses the updated information on sources, environmental concerns, and sustainable remediation techniques for bisphenol A removal from aquatic ecosystems, discussing gaps, constraints, and future research requirements.

Efficient Removal of Tetracycline and Bisphenol A from Water with a New Hybrid Clay/TiO2 Composite

New TiO₂ hybrid composites were prepared from kaolin clay, predried and carbonized biomass, and titanium tetraisopropoxide and explored for tetracycline (TET) and bisphenol A (BPA) removal from water. Overall, the removal rate is 84% for TET and 51% for BPA. The maximum adsorption capacities (q_m) are 30 and 23 mg/g for TET and BPA, respectively. These capacities are far greater than those obtained for unmodified TiO₂. Increasing the ionic strength of the solution does not change the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent. pH changes only slightly change BPA adsorption, while a pH > 7 significantly reduces the adsorption of TET on the material. The Brouers-Sotolongo fractal model best describes the kinetic data for both TET and BPA adsorption, predicting that the adsorption process occurs via a complex mechanism involving various forces of attraction. Temkin and Freundlich isotherms, which best fit the equilibrium adsorption data for TET and BPA, respectively, suggest that adsorption sites are heterogeneous in nature. Overall, the composite materials are much more effective for TET removal from aqueous solution than for BPA. This phenomenon is assigned to a difference in the TET/adsorbent interactions vs the BPA/adsorbent interactions: the decisive factor appears to be favorable electrostatic interactions for TET yielding a more effective TET removal.

Exploring the mechanism of Self-Consistent balance between microbiota and high efficiency in wastewater treatment

Sewage treatment mediated by microbial organisms is a promising green trend. However, the complex balance between microbiota stability and highly efficient wastewater treatment requires investigation. This study successfully improved the effectiveness of sewage treatment by resetting the microbial community structure in the activated sludge. Truepera, Methylophaga, unclassified_Fodinicurvataceae, and unclassified_Actinomanarales were the dominant genera, while salinity and NH₃-N content were identified as the key environmental factors governing the microbial structure. By optimizing the microflora structure driven by environmental factors, the key minor genera were activated and coordinated with the aforementioned genera, thereby promoting wastewater treatment. Finally, the chemical oxygen demand, NH₃-N, and total phosphorus removal rates were improved to 86.8 ± 1.9%, 82.4 ± 4.1%, and 94.8 ± 3.8%, respectively. It provides a new insight to improve the wastewater treatment through setting microbiota by environmental factor driven.

Bacterial degradation of bisphenol analogues: an overview

Bisphenol A (BPA) is one of the most produced synthetic monomers in the world and is widespread in the environment. BPA was replaced by bisphenol analogues (BP) because of its adverse effects on life. Bacteria can degrade BPA and other bisphenol analogues (BP), diminishing their environmental concentrations. This study aimed to summarize the knowledge and contribute to future studies. In this review, we surveyed papers on bacterial degradation of twelve different bisphenol analogues published between 1987 and June 2022. A total of 102 original papers from PubMed and Google Scholar were selected for this review. Most of the studies (94.1%, n = 96) on bacterial degradation of bisphenol analogues focused on BPA, and then on bisphenol F (BPF), and bisphenol S (BPS). The number of studies on bacterial degradation of bisphenol analogues increased more than six times from 2000 (n = 2) to 2021 (n = 13). Indigenous microorganisms and the genera Sphingomonas, Sphingobium, and Cupriavidus could degrade several BP. However, few studies focussed on Cupriavidus. The acknowledgement of various aspects of BP bacterial biodegradation is vital for choosing the most suitable microorganisms for the bioremediation of a single BP or a mixture of BP.

Study on Gaseous Chlorobenzene Treatment by a Bio-Trickling Filter: Degradation Mechanism and Microbial Community

Large-flow waste gas generated from the pharmaceutical and chemical industry usually contains low concentrations of VOCs (volatile organic compounds), and it is also the key factor that presents challenges in terms of disposal. To date, due to the limitations of mass transfer rate and microbial degradation ability, the degradation performance of VOCs using the biological method has not been ideal. Therefore, in this study, the sludge from a chlorobenzene-containing wastewater treatment plant was inoculated into our experimental bio-trickling filter (BTF) to explore the feasibility of domestication and degradation of gaseous chlorobenzene by highly active microorganisms. The kinetics of its mass transfer reaction and microbial community dynamics were also discussed. Moreover, the main process parameters of BTF for chlorobenzene degradation were optimized. The results showed that the degradation effect of chlorobenzene reached more than 85% at an inlet concentration of chlorobenzene 700 mg·m−3, oxygen concentration of 10%, and an empty bed retention time (EBRT) of 80 s. The mass transfer kinetic analysis indicated that the process of chlorobenzene degradation in the BTF occurred between the zero-stage reaction and the first-stage reaction. This BTF contributed significantly to the biodegradability of chlorobenzene, overcoming the limitation of gas-to-liquid/solid mass transfer of chlorobenzene. The analysis of the species diversity showed that Thermomonas, Petrimona, Comana, and Ottowia were typical organic-matter-degrading bacteria that degraded chlorobenzene efficiently with xylene present.

A critical review of advanced nanotechnology and hybrid membrane based water recycling, reuse, and wastewater treatment processes

One of the modern challenges is to provide clean and affordable drinking water. Water scarcity is caused by the growing population in the world and pollutants contaminate all remaining water sources. Innovative water treatment solutions have been provided by nanotechnology. Microorganisms, organic suspensions, and inorganic heavy metal ions, among other things, are common water contaminants. Since antiquity, a wide range of water clean-up methods have been employed to address this issue. Breakthroughs in water purification procedures have occurred during the previous four decades, with the most significant one being the use of nanomaterials and nanomembranes. Nanoparticles and nanomembranes (polymeric membranes) have recently been used in engineered materials (TiO₂, ZnO, CuO, Ag, CNT's and mixed oxide nanoparticles, for example). Engineered nanomembranes, nanocomposites and nanoparticles have been used in this review article's discussion of water purification technologies. The review also discusses the risk and solutions of using nanoparticles and nanocomposites in the future.

Emerging Pollutants in Moroccan Wastewater: Occurrence, Impact, and Removal Technologies

The rapid growth of anthropogenic activities in recent decades has resulted in the appearance of numerous new chemical compounds in the environment, known as “emerging pollutants” (EPs) or “contaminants of emerging concern” (CECs). Although partially or not yet regulated or monitored, there is growing research interest in these EPs among the scientific community because of their bioaccumulation, persistence, and adverse effects. Among these, endocrine disruptors, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals can have harmful impacts on human health and the ecosystem. Conventional wastewater treatment technologies are not effective in removing these contaminants, allowing them to be released into the receiving environment. In order to improve the understanding of emerging pollutants, this review discusses the source, occurrence, and impacts of bisphenol A, atrazine, amoxicillin, and paracetamol as model molecules of emerging environmental pollutants, an issue that remains underrepresented in Morocco. Then, treatment methods for EPs are reviewed, including adsorption, advanced oxidation processes, biodegradation, and hybrid treatment. It is proposed that adsorption and photocatalysis can be used as simple, effective, and environmentally friendly technologies for their removal. Thus, we summarize some of the adsorbent and photocatalyst materials applied in recent work to control these pollutants. Towards the end of this paper, the development of inexpensive and locally available (Morocco) materials to remove these compounds from wastewater is considered.
