Approaches to herbicide (MCPA) pollution mitigation in drinking water source catchments using enhanced space and time monitoring

The power to (detect) change: Can honey bee collected pollen be used to monitor pesticide residues in the landscape?

Analysis of trapped honey bee pollen for pesticide residues is the most widely used method of monitoring the amount of pesticide entering colonies and its change over time. In this study, we collected and analyzed pollen from 70 sites across four bee-pollinated crops over two years to characterize the variation in pesticide detection across sites, crops and at different periods during bloom. Hazard Quotient, HQ, is the most common way that pesticide residues are aggregated into a single pesticide hazard value in the current literature. Therefore, change in pesticide hazard (HQ) was quantified in composite pollen samples collected from pollen traps and in pollen color subsamples separated into pollen from the target crop being pollinated and pollen from other plant species. We used our estimates of the variation in HQ to calculate the number of sample location sites needed to detect a 5% annual change in HQ across all crops or within specific crops over a 5-year period. The number of sites required to be sampled varied by crop and year and ranged between 139 and 7194 sites, costing an estimated $129,548 and $3.35 million, respectively. The HQ values detectable for this cost would be 575 and 154. We identified additional factors that complicate the interpretation of the results as a way to evaluate changes in pest management practices at a state level. First, in all but one crop (meadowfoam), the pollen collected from outside the crop honey bee colonies were pollinating comprised a major percentage of the total pollen catch. Moreover, we found that when the overall quantity of pollen from different pollen sources was taken into account, differences in HQ among crops widened. We also found that while HQ estimates remain consistent across the bloom period for some crops, such as cherry, we observed large differences in other crops, notably meadowfoam. Overall, our results suggest the current practice of interpreting pesticides levels in pollen may come with limitations for agencies charged with improving pesticide stewardship due to the high variation associated with HQ values over time and across crops. Despite the limitations of HQ for detecting change in pesticide hazard, there remains a potential for HQ to provide feedback to regulators and scientists on field-realistic pesticide hazard within a landscape.

Establishing the extent of pesticide contamination in Irish agricultural soils

To establish meaningful and sustainable policy directives for sustainable pesticide use in agriculture, baseline knowledge of pesticide levels in soils is required. To address this, five pesticides and one metabolite widely used in Irish agriculture and five neonicotinoid compounds pesticides were screened from soils from 25 fields. These sites represented a diversity of soil and land use types. Prothioconazole was detected in 16 of the 18 sites where it had been recently applied, with the highest maximum concentration quantified of 46 μg/kg. However, a week after application only four fields had prothioconazole concentrations above the limit of quantification (LOQ). Fluroxypyr was applied in 11 sites but was not detected above LOQ. Glyphosate and AMPA were not detected. Interestingly, neonicotinoids were detected in 96% of all sampling sites, even though they were not reported as recently applied. Excluding neonicotinoids, 60% of sites were found to contain pesticide residues of compounds that were not previously applied, with boscalid and azoxystrobin detected in 15 of the 25 sites sampled. The total number of pesticides detected in Irish soils were significantly negatively correlated with clay fraction, while average pesticide concentrations were significantly positively correlated with log Kow values. 17 fields were found to have total pesticide concentrations in excess of 0.5 μg/kg, even when recently applied pesticides were removed from calculations. Theoretical consideration of quantified pesticides determined that azoxystrobin has high leaching risk, while boscalid, which was detected but not applied, has an accumulation risk. This information provides insight into the current level of pesticide contamination in Irish agricultural soil and contributes to the European-level effort to understand potential impacts of pesticide contamination in soil.

Pesticides and Parabens Contaminating Aquatic Environment: Acute and Sub-Chronic Toxicity towards Early-Life Stages of Freshwater Fish and Amphibians

Pesticides and personal care products are two very important groups of contaminants posing a threat to the aquatic environment and the organisms living in it.. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the effects of widely used pesticides and parabens on aquatic non-target biota such as fish (using model organisms Danio rerio and Cyprinus carpio) and amphibians (using model organism Xenopus laevis) using a wide range of endpoints. The first part of the experiment was focused on the embryonal toxicity of three widely used pesticides (metazachlor, prochloraz, and 4-chloro-2-methyl phenoxy acetic acid) and three parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben) with D. rerio, C. carpio, and X. laevis embryos. An emphasis was placed on using mostly sub-lethal concentrations that are partially relevant to the environmental concentrations of the substances studied. In the second part of the study, an embryo-larval toxicity test with C. carpio was carried out with prochloraz using concentrations 0.1, 1, 10, 100, and 1000 µg/L. The results of both parts of the study show that even the low, environmentally relevant concentrations of the chemicals tested are often able to affect the expression of genes that play either a prominent role in detoxification and sex hormone production or indicate cell stress or, in case of prochloraz, to induce genotoxicity.

Evaluation of Chemcatcher® passive samplers for pesticide monitoring using high-frequency catchment scale data

Passive samplers (PS) have been proposed as an enhanced water quality monitoring solution in rivers, but their performance against high-frequency data over the longer term has not been widely explored. This study compared the performance of Chemcatcher® passive sampling (PS) devices with high-frequency sampling (HFS: 7-hourly to daily) in two dynamic rivers over 16 months. The evaluation was based on the acid herbicides MCPA (2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid), mecoprop-P, fluroxypyr and triclopyr. The impact of river discharge parameters on Chemcatcher® device performance was also explored. Mixed effects modelling showed that time-weighted mean concentration (TWMC) and flow-weighted mean concentration (FWMC) values obtained by the HFS approach were both significantly higher (p < 0.001) than TWMC values determined from PS regardless of river or pesticide. Modelling also showed that TWMC_PS values were more similar to TWMC_HFS than FWMC_HFS values. However, further testing revealed that MCPA TWMC values from HFS and PS were not significantly different (p > 0.05). There was little indication that river flow parameters altered PS performance-some minor effects were not significant or consistent. Despite this, the PS recovery of very low concentrations indicated that Chemcatcher® devices may be used to evaluate the presence/absence and magnitude of acid herbicides in hydrologically dynamic rivers in synoptic type surveys where space and time coverage is required. However, a period of calibration of the devices in each river would be necessary if they were intended to provide a quantitative review of pesticide concentration as compared with HFS approaches.

Molecular linkages between chemodiversity and MCPA complexation behavior of dissolved organic matter in paddy soil: Effects of land conversion

Complexation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a crucial role in regulating the fate and risk of agrochemicals. Here, taking a toxic herbicide MCPA (4-chloro-2- methylphenoxyacetic acid) as the target, the effect of land conversion on complexation behavior of DOM to agrochemicals was investigated in paddy soil. Furthermore, the mechanisms were explored in a new perspective of DOM chemodiversity. Soil DOMs were selected from four long-term cropping systems, including paddy field (PF), vegetable field (VF), rice-vegetable rotation (RV) and abandoned land (AL). The results showed that the DOMs in PF and AL were rich in hydrophilic substances (e.g., carbohydrates or protein-like molecules) with low aromaticity. However, after converting PF to VF and RV, abundant aromatic macromolecules and aliphatic alkanes were observed in DOM. Due to those changes in DOM chemodiversity, the binding site and capability of DOM were highest in VF and RV, and were positively correlated with DOM aromaticity, MW, humus and polar groups (e.g., amino). This was because the complexation of "DOM-MCPA" was static binding via ligand exchange and H-bonding among polar groups and hydrophobic interaction among aromatic skeletons. The EEM-PARAFAC confirmed that microbial humic-like substances dominated the complexation of DOM rather than terrestrial humic-like and tryptophan-like matters. The 2D-COS analysis further revealed that the complexation of DOM preferentially occurred in amino, polysaccharide C-O and aliphatic C-H for PF and AL, but in aromatic C=C, amide C=N for RV and VF. In summary, these findings provide molecular insight into the effect of land conversion on DOM complexation activity, which highlight the importance of DOM chemodiversity. These results will contribute to the risk assessments of agrochemicals in paddy soil.

Reducing MCPA herbicide pollution at catchment scale using an agri-environmental scheme

In river catchments used as drinking water sources, high pesticide concentrations in abstracted waters require an expensive treatment step prior to supply. The acid herbicide 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) is particularly problematic as it is highly mobile in the soil-water environment following application. Here, an agri-environmental scheme (AES) was introduced to a large-scale catchment (384 km²) to potentially reduce the burden of pesticides in the water treatment process. The main measure offered was contractor application of glyphosate by weed wiping as a substitute for boom spraying of MCPA, supported by educational and advisory activities. A combined innovation applied in the assessment was, i) a full before-after-control-impact (BACI) framework over four peak application seasons (April to October 2018 to 2021) where a neighbouring catchment (386 km²) did not have an AES and, ii) an enhanced monitoring approach where river discharge and MCPA concentrations were measured synchronously in each catchment. During peak application periods the sample resolution was every 7 h, and daily during quiescent winter periods. This sampling approach enabled flow- and time-weighted concentrations to be established, and a detailed record of export loads. These loads were up to 0.242 kg km^-2 yr^-1, and over an order of magnitude higher than previously reported in the literature. Despite this, and accounting for inter-annual and seasonal variations in river discharges, the AES catchment indicated a reduction in both flow- and time-weighted MCPA concentration of up to 21% and 24%, respectively, compared to the control catchment. No pollution swapping was detected. Nevertheless, the percentage of MCPA occurrences above a 0.1 μg L^-1 threshold did not reduce and so the need for treatment was not fully resolved. Although the work highlights the advantages of catchment management approaches for pollution reduction in source water catchments, it also indicates that maximising participation will be essential for future AES.

Quantifying MCPA load pathways at catchment scale using high temporal resolution data

Detection of the agricultural acid herbicide MCPA (2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid) in drinking water source catchments is of growing concern, with economic and environmental implications for water utilities and wider ecosystem services. MCPA is poorly adsorbed to soil and highly mobile in water, but hydrological pathway processes are relatively unknown at the catchment scale and limited by coarse resolution data. This understanding is required to target mitigation measures and to provide a framework to monitor their effectiveness. To address this knowledge gap, this study reports findings from river discharge and synchronous MCPA concentration datasets (continuous 7 hour and with additional hourly sampling during storm events) collected over a 7 month herbicide spraying season. The study was undertaken in a surface (source) water catchment (384 km²-of which 154 km² is agricultural land use) in the cross-border area of Ireland. Combined into loads, and using two pathway separation techniques, the MCPA data were apportioned into event and baseload components and the former was further separated to quantify a quickflow (QF) and other event pathways. Based on the 7 hourly dataset, 85.2 kg (0.22 kg km^-2 by catchment area, or 0.55 kg km^-2 by agricultural area) of MCPA was exported from the catchment in 7 months. Of this load, 87.7 % was transported via event flow pathways with 72.0 % transported via surface dominated (QF) pathways. Approximately 12 % of the MCPA load was transported via deep baseflows, indicating a persistence in this delayed pathway, and this was the primary pathway condition monitored in a weekly regulatory sampling programme. However, overall, the data indicated a dominant acute, storm dependent process of incidental MCPA loss during the spraying season. Reducing use and/or implementing extensive surface pathway disconnection measures are the mitigation options with greatest potential, the success of which can only be assessed using high temporal resolution monitoring techniques.

A Review on the Use of Membrane Technology Systems in Developing Countries

Fulfilling the demand of clean potable water to the general public has long been a challenging task in most developing countries due to various reasons. Large-scale membrane water treatment systems have proven to be successful in many advanced countries in the past two decades. This paves the way for developing countries to study the feasibility and adopt the utilization of membrane technology in water treatment. There are still many challenges to overcome, particularly on the much higher capital and operational cost of membrane technology compared to the conventional water treatment system. This review aims to delve into the progress of membrane technology for water treatment systems, particularly in developing countries. It first concentrates on membrane classification and its application in water treatment, including membrane technology progress for large-scale water treatment systems. Then, the fouling issue and ways to mitigate the fouling will be discussed. The feasibility of membrane technologies in developing countries was then evaluated, followed by a discussion on the challenges and opportunities of the membrane technology implementation. Finally, the current trend of membrane research was highlighted to address future perspectives of the membrane technologies for clean water production.

Engineered Magnetic Carbon-Based Adsorbents for the Removal of Water Priority Pollutants: An Overview

This review covers the preparation, characterization, and application of magnetic adsorbents obtained from carbon-based sources and their application in the adsorption of both inorganic and organic pollutants from water. Different preparation routes to obtain magnetic adsorbents from activated carbon, biochar, hydrochar, graphene, carbon dots, carbon nanotubes, and carbon nanocages, including the magnetic phase incorporated on the solid surface, are described and discussed. The performance of these adsorbents is analyzed for the removal of fluoride, arsenic, heavy metals, dyes, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and other emerging and relevant water pollutants. Properties of these adsorbents and the corresponding adsorption mechanisms have been included in this review. Overall, this type of magnetic adsorbents offers an alternative for facing the operational problems associated to adsorption process in water treatment. However, some gaps have been identified in the proper physicochemical characterization of these adsorbents, the development of green and low-cost preparation methods for their industrial production and commercialization, the regeneration and final disposal of spent adsorbents, and their application in the multicomponent adsorption of water pollutants.

Mechanisms by which different polar fractions of dissolved organic matter affect sorption of the herbicide MCPA in ferralsol

Exogenous dissolved organic matter (DOM) modifies the sorption of 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid (MCPA, a polar herbicide) in soil. However, how the chemodiversity and diverse fractions of DOM affect MCPA sorption is still unknown. Here, DOM was extracted from compost and rice straw; the structure-activity correlations between DOM chemodiversity and their effects on MCPA sorption were investigated by redundancy analysis. Moreover, the mechanism involved was explored by spectroscopic techniques, microbeam and modeling. DOM mainly affected MCPA sorption by altering soil surface properties and MCPA complexed form. Hydrophobic neutral (HON) and acid insoluble matter (AIM) were the fractions of DOM that most inhibited MCPA sorption through soil pore blockage, and were related to the humic-like substances with high aromaticity and large molecular weight. The hydrophobic acid fraction (HOA) only showed an intermediate inhibition on the sorption, although the largest competitive sorption occurred. This was because HOA contained abundant aromatic acid and polar groups with moderate polarity. Thus, the reduced effect caused by competitive sorption was partly compensated by the greatest co-sorption by HOA. The hydrophilic matter (HIM) had the weakest inhibition on MCPA sorption, because this fraction was rich in simple sugars, poly- and oligosaccharides, but lacked aryl groups. The results will aid in the risk assessments and prevention of MCPA in DOM-introduced soil.
