Abstract
Acidogenic co-fermentation of waste activated sludge (WAS) and food waste (FW) under thermophilic conditions enhances process consistency, while overcoming the problem of acetic acid consumption due to growing methanogens. Two long-term continuous co-fermentation experiments were carried out with a WAS:FW mixture (70:30 % in VS) at organic loading rate of 8 gVS/(L·d). Experiment 1 assessed the impact of temperature (35 °C and 55 °C) and WAS origin (WAS_A and WAS_B) in two collection periods. Experiment 2 evaluated the consistency at 55 °C by testing three WAS origins (WAS_A, WAS_B and WAS_C) in 3 additional collection periods. Experimental results showed that at 55 °C, the solubilisation yield was enhanced compared to 35 °C, although this did not always lead to higher fermentation yield. The fermentation product profile was affected by the operating temperature, with 55 °C promoting the accumulation of acetic and butyric acids. Acetic acid consumption was only detected at 35 °C in fermenters treating WAS_A, whereas it was not observed in fermenters treating WAS_B. This consumption was prevented at 55 °C, as none of the 13 fermenters continuous operation showed acetic acid consumption. Acetic acid consumption was attributed to species midas_s_9557 (genus Methanosarcina), an aceticlastic methanogen, which did not grow under 55 °C. Temperature had a more significant effect on the microbial community structure than WAS origin. Functional redundancy was demonstrated by each fermenter having its own distinct microbial consortium while maintaining constant metabolic functions at 55 °C. Overall, the acidogenic co-fermentation of WAS and FW at 55 °C is regarded as a robust and consistent biotechnology.

Abstract
This review emphasizes the urgent need for food waste upcycling as a response to the mounting global food waste crisis. Focusing on polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) as an alternative to traditional plastics, it examines the potential of various food wastes as feedstock for microbial fermentation and PHA production. The upcycling of food waste including cheese whey, waste cooking oil, coffee waste, and animal fat is an innovative practice for food waste management. This approach not only mitigates environmental impacts but also contributes to sustainable development and economic growth. Downstream processing techniques for PHAs are discussed, highlighting their role in obtaining high-quality materials. The study also addresses sustainability considerations, emphasizing biodegradability and recycling, while acknowledging the challenges associated with this path.

Abstract
As high-performance monomers for the manufacture of polyamide materials, mid- and long-chain dicarboxylic acids (DCAi, i ≥ 6) have received extensive attention from researchers. Biosynthesis is gradually replacing chemical synthesis due to its outstanding advantages in the industrial production of mid- and long-chain dicarboxylic acids, which is mostly achieved by using the strong terminal oxidation ability of nonmodel microorganisms such as Candida tropicalis to oxidize hydrophobic substrates such as alkanes. Here, we first summarize the metabolic pathways of oxidative alkane conversion into dicarboxylic acid by terminally oxidizing unconventional yeasts and the corresponding metabolic engineering strategies. Then, we summarize the research progress on new dicarboxylic acid production processes. Finally, the future development directions in the biosynthesis of mid- and long-chain dicarboxylic acids are prospected from synthetic biology and bioprocess engineering, which can also provide a reference for the synthesis of other biobased chemicals and biomaterials.

Abstract
This study explored the potential application of plasma coupling ionic liquid on disintegration of waste activated sludge and enhanced production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in anaerobic fermentation. Under optimal conditions (dosage of ionic liquid [Emim]OTf = 0.1 g/g VSS (volatile suspended solids) and discharge power of dielectric barrier discharge plasma (DBD) = 75.2 W), the [Emim]OTf/DBD pretreatment increased SCFA production by 302 % and acetic acid ratio by 53 % compared to the control. Mechanistic investigations revealed that the [Emim]OTf/DBD combination motivated the generation of various reactive species (such as H2O2, O3, •OH, 1O2, ONOO-, and •O2-) and enhanced the utilization of physical energies (such as heat). The coupling effects of [Emim]OTf/DBD synergistically improved the disintegration of sludge and biodegradability of dissolved organic matter, promoting the sludge anaerobic fermentation process. Moreover, the [Emim]OTf/DBD pretreatment enriched hydrolysis and SCFAs-forming bacteria while inhibiting SCFAs-consuming bacteria. The net effect was pronounced expression of genes encoding key enzymes (such as alpha-glucosidase, endoglucanase, beta-glucosidase, l-lactate/D-lactate dehydrogenase, and butyrate kinase) involved in the SCFA-producing pathway, enhancing the production of SCFAs from sludge anaerobic fermentation. In addition, [Emim]OTf/DBD pretreatment facilitated sludge dewatering and heavy metal removal. Therefore, [Emim]OTf/DBD pretreatment is a promising approach to advancing sludge reduction, recyclability, and valuable resource recovery.

Abstract
Two perturbations were investigated in acidogenic co-fermentation of waste activated sludge (WAS) and food waste in continuous mesophilic fermenters: increasing the organic loading rate (OLR) and changing the WAS. A control reactor maintained an OLR of 11 gVS/(L·d), while a test reactor had a prolonged OLR change to 18 gVS/(L·d). For each OLR, two WAS were studied. The change in OLR led to differentiated fermentation product profile without compromising the fermentation yields (∼300 mgCOD/gVS). At 11 gVS/(L·d), the product profile was dominated by acetic, butyric, and propionic acids while at 18 gVS/(L·d) it shifted to acetic acid, ethanol, and caproic acid. Reverting the OLR also reverted the fermentation profile. The biomass immigration with the WAS changed the fermentation microbial structure and introduced acetic acid-consuming methanogens, which growth was only delayed by the OLR increase. Microbial monitoring and post-fermentation tests can be used for early detection of acetic acid-consuming events.

Abstract
This work aims to improve the continuous co-fermentation of waste activated sludge (WAS) and food waste (FW) by investigating the long-term impact of temperature on fermentation performance and the underpinning microbial community. Acidogenic co-fermentation of WAS and FW (70:30 % VS-basis) to produce volatile fatty acids (VFA) was studied in continuous fermenters at different temperatures (25, 35, 45, 55 °C) at an organic loading rate of 11 gVS/(L·d) and a hydraulic retention time of 3.5 days. Two batches of WAS (A and B) were collected from the same wastewater treatment plant at different periods to understand the impact of the WAS microbioota on the fermenters' microbial communities. Solubilisation yield was higher at 45 °C (575 ± 68 mgCOD/gVS) followed by 55 °C (508 ± 45 mgCOD/gVS). Fermentation yield was higher at 55 °C (425 ± 28 mgCOD/gVS) followed by 35 °C (327 ± 17 mgCOD/gVS). Temperature also had a noticeable impact on the VFA profile. At 55 °C, acetic (40 %) and butyric (40 %) acid dominated, while acetic (37 %), butyric acid (31 %), and propionic acid (17 %) dominated at 35 °C. At 45 °C, an accumulation of caproic acid was detected which did not occur at other temperatures. Each temperature had a distinct microbial community, where the WAS microbiota played an important role. The biomass mass-balance showed the highest growth of microorganisms (51 %) at 35 °C and WAS_B, where a consumption of acetic acid was observed. Therefore, at 35 °C, there is a higher risk of acetic acid consumption probably due to the proliferation of methanogens imported from WAS.

Abstract
Mid-to-long-chain dicarboxylic acids (DCAi, i ≥ 6) are organic compounds in which two carboxylic acid functional groups are present at the terminal position of the carbon chain. These acids find important applications as structural components and intermediates across various industrial sectors, including organic compound synthesis, food production, pharmaceutical development, and agricultural manufacturing. However, conventional petroleum-based DCA production methods cause environmental pollution, making sustainable development challenging. Hence, the demand for eco-friendly processes and renewable raw materials for DCA production is rising. Owing to advances in systems metabolic engineering, new tools from systems biology, synthetic biology, and evolutionary engineering can now be used for the sustainable production of energy-dense biofuels. Here, we explore systems metabolic engineering strategies for DCA synthesis in various chassis via the conversion of different raw materials into mid-to-long-chain DCAs. Subsequently, we discuss the future challenges in this field and propose synthetic biology approaches for the efficient production and successful commercialization of these acids.

Abstract
The objective of this paper is to gain insights into the synergistic advantage of anaerobic co-fermentation of heat-treated sludge (HS) with food waste (FW) and heat-treated food waste (HFW) for hydrogen production. The results showed that, compared with raw sludge (RS) mixed with FW (RS-FW), the co-substrate of HS mixed with either FW (HS-FW) or HFW (HS-HFW) effectively promoted hydrogen production, with HS-HFW promoted more than HS-FW. The maximum specific hydrogen production (MSHP) and the maximum hydrogen concentration (MHC) of HS-HFW were 40.53 mL H2/g dry weight and 57.22%, respectively, and 1.21- and 1.45-fold as high as those from HS-FW. The corresponding fermentation was ethanol type for HS-HFW and butyric acid type for HS-FW. The net energy production from RS-FW and HS-FW was both negative, but it was positive (2.57 MJ) from 40% HFW addition to HS-HFW. Anaerobic fermentation was more viable for HS-HFW.

Abstract
Different ratios of four volatile fatty acids (VFAs) were used as the primary feed to a laboratory scale biological nutrient reactor during four operational stages. The reactor performed efficiently over 500 days of operation with over 90% dissolved phosphorus and over 98% ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N) removal. Through in the first experimental phase, acetate and propionate were present in a significant proportion as carbon sources, the relative abundance of Candidatus Accumulibacter, a potential polyphosphate accumulating organism, increased from 10% to 57% and the Defluviicoccus genus, a known glycogen accumulating organism (GAO), decreased from 41% to 5%. Further tests indicated the presence of denitrifying phosphorus accumulating organisms (DPAO) belonging to Clade IIC, that could use nitrite as the electron acceptor during P-uptake. In general, VFAs favored the increase of the genus Defluviicoccus and Candidatus Accumulibacter. High relative abundance of Defluviicoccus did not affect the stability and the performance of the BNR process.

Abstract
Anaerobic co-digestion of deoiled food waste (dFW) and waste activated sludge (WAS) can address the challenges derived from mono-digestion of FW. In the present study, a pilot-scale methanogenic bioreactor of a two-phase anaerobic digestion system was developed to explore the impact of dFW/WAS volatile solids ratios on the overall performance, microbial community, and metabolic pathways. Besides, the tech-economic of the system was analyzed. The results showed that the degradation efficiency of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) was more than 84.90% for all the dFW/WAS ratios (v/v) (1:0, 39:1, 29:1, 19:1 and 9:1). Moreover, the dominant genus of bacteria and archaea with different ratios were Lactobacillus (66.84-98.44%) and Methanosaeta (53.66-80.09%), respectively. Co-digestion of dFW and WAS (29: 1 in v/v ratios) obtained the highest yield of methane (0.41 L CH4/Ladded) with approximately 90% of SCOD being removed. In the pilot-scale experiment, the co-digestion of FW and WAS makes positive contribution to reusing solid waste for improving solid management.

Abstract
Kitchen wastewater can be transformed into a valuable resource through anaerobic fermentation. However, the efficiency of this process is hindered by various factors including salt inhibition and nutrient imbalance. In this study, we examined the effects of co-fermentation with sludge and membrane filtration on the anaerobic fermentation of kitchen wastewater. Our findings indicate that co-fermentation with sludge resulted in a 4-fold increase in fermentation rate and a 2-fold increase in short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production. This suggests that the addition of sludge helped to alleviate salt and acid inhibition through ammonia buffering and elemental balancing. The membrane filtration retained 60% of soluble carbohydrates and 15% of proteins in the reactor for further fermentation and recovered nearly 100% of NH4+ and SCFAs in the filtrate, which helped to alleviate acid and ammonia inhibition. The combined fermentation system significantly increased the richness and diversity of microorganisms, particularly caproiciproducens and Clostridium_sensu_stricto_12. The membrane flux remained stable and at a relatively high level, indicating that the combined process may be economically feasible. However, scaling up the co-anaerobic fermentation of kitchen wastewater and sludge in a membrane reactor is necessary for further economic evaluation in the future.

Abstract
Alkaline fermentation can reduce the amount of waste activated sludge and prepare sludge alkaline fermentation liquid (SAFL) rich in short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which can be used as a high-quality carbon source for the biological nutrient removal (BNR) process. This review compiles the production method of SAFL and the progress of its application as a BNR carbon source. Compared with traditional carbon sources, SAFL has the advantages of higher efficiency and economy, and different operating conditions can influence the yield and structure of SCFAs in SAFL. SAFL can significantly improve the nutrient removal efficiency of the BNR process. Taking SAFL as the internal carbon source of BNR can simultaneously solve the problem of carbon source shortage and sludge treatment difficulties in wastewater treatment plants, and further reduce the operating cost. However, the alkaline fermentation process results in many refractory organics, ammonia and phosphate in SAFL, which reduces the availability of SAFL as a carbon source. Purifying SCFAs by removing nitrogen and phosphorus, directly extracting SCFAs, or increasing the amount of SCFAs in SAFL by co-fermentation or combining with other pretreatment methods, etc., are effective measures to improve the availability of SAFL.

Abstract
The study compares the potential to produce volatile fatty acids (VFA) from sewage sludge, both raw and thermally pre-treated in two modes of operation. In batch mode, raw sludge at pH 8 obtained the highest maximum VFA yield (0.41 g COD-VFA/g CODfed) whereas pre-treated sludge achieved a lower value (0.27 g COD-VFA/g CODfed). The operation of 5-L continuous reactors showed that thermal hydrolysis pre-treatment (THP) did not have any significant influence on VFA yields, averaging 15.1 % g COD-VFA/g COD with raw sludge and 16.6 % g COD-VFA/g COD with pre-treated one. Microbial community analysis showed that phylum Firmicutes was predominant in both reactors and that the enzymatic profiles involved in VFA production were very similar regardless of the substrate fed.

Abstract
Sludge hydrolysis is a vital step in anaerobic digestion of sludge. This study compared the efficacy of free versus immobilized enzymes at different concentrations in promoting sludge disintegration. Pretreatment with 1,000 mg/L immobilized enzymes was more efficient in promoting sludge disintegration than free enzymes at the same concentration. Under the optimized conditions, volatile fatty acids (VFAs) were produced at 10.6 g/L, accounting for 85 % of total soluble chemical oxygen demand. Improved VFA production was attributed to the release of large amounts of polysaccharides and proteins from the enzymatically pretreated sludge. Released organic matter are the substrates for VFAs generated by the determined microbial community of Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, and Chloroflexi. In this study, anaerobic fermentation was used to successfully convert organic matter in sludge into high-value-added VFAs. Therefore, this process can be selected as a strategy to reduce carbon emissions from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs).

Abstract
The impact of food waste (FW) composition on co-fermentation performance was studied to elucidate if adjusting FW composition can be used to drive the fermentation yield and profile, which is relevant for biorefinery applications. First, the impact of individual FW components (i.e., fruit, vegetables, pasta, rice, meat, fish, and cellulose) was assessed. Subsequently, the effect of mixing a protein-rich component and a carbohydrate-rich component was studied (i.e., fish/fruit and fish/cellulose, and meat/rice and meat/vegetable). All experiments were carried out in mesophilic batch assays using waste activated sludge (WAS) as main substrate, the same mixture ratio (70 % WAS +30 % FW on VS basis), and no pH control. Results showed that each FW component had a distinct effect on VFA yield and profile, with protein-rich components reaching the highest VFA yields; 502 and 442 mgCOD/gVS for WAS/Fish and WAS/Meat, respectively. A positive interaction on VFA yield was observed when mixing a protein-rich and a carbohydrate-rich component. This interaction was not proportional to the co-substrates proportion in the mixtures. On the other hand, the VFA profile was clearly driven by the components in the mixture, including both WAS and FW composition. Overall, these results indicate that predicting the VFA yield of WAS/FW co-fermentation is not just related to FW composition, but FW composition could be used to adjust the VFA profile to a certain extent.

Abstract
Waste activated sludge (WAS) has low biodegradability that restricts acidogenic fermentation (AF), thereby limiting the high-value volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production. This study investigated an alternative electrochemical pretreatment (EPT) approach that can facilitate AF of WAS and food waste (FW) and therefore enhance VFAs production. The results showed through introducing 50 % volatile solid basis of FW (containing massive chloride) into WAS, a 60-min EPT produced reactive chlorine species (RCS), which diffused into WAS-FW inner layers resulting in cell lysis, therefore significantly promoted and accelerated WAS-FW disintegration, contributing to more soluble and biodegradable dissolved organic matter (DOM). Then during the subsequent 15-day acidogenic co-fermentation (Co-AF), the residual RCS (approximate 5 mg Cl2/L) also caused acidogenic bacteria (including Prevotella_7, Lactobacillus and Veillonella) gradually outcompeted methanogens due to their different tolerance to residual RCS. Consequently, the maximum VFAs yield of the WAS-FW Co-AF with EPT was 40.8 % higher than WAS-AF without EPT.

Abstract
China is vigorously promoting garbage classification, but the treatment of classified waste, especially household food waste (HFW) has yet to be studied. Lactic acid (LA), a high value-added platform molecule has broad market prospects. Although there have been many studies on the production of LA from food waste, open fermentation often produces lots of by-products, while the traditional fermentation under a pure bacteria system often requires the saccharification process, which increases the production cost. We sought to analyze the comprehensive properties of classified HFW in Shanghai, then to produce LA by inoculating lactic acid bacteria (LAB) directly. The effects of strains, temperature, sterilized or not, initial pH, inoculum size, and substrate concentration on LA production were investigated. HFW was rich in nutrients and growth factors which provided the possibility for direct LA production from HFW by inoculating LAB. The results showed that Lactobacillus rhamnosus ATCC 7469, Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus all could be used as the inoculum, however, no significant synergistic effect of the three strains on LA production was found. LA concentration of 30.25 g/L at 37 °C, pH 6.8 could be obtained by inoculating Lactobacillus rhamnosus ATCC 7469 from sterilized HFW. High inoculum size and substrate concentration resulted in high LA concentration, but not high LA yield. The result of ANOVA indicated that there was a significantly positive relationship between substrate concentration and LA concentration (r = 0.942, p < 0.01), while no statistically significant difference between these groups at different inoculum size was evident (p = 0.318). In addition, an average LA concentration of 26.8 g/L, LA yield of 0.20 g/g TCOD was obtained by repeated batch fermentation for 32 d.

Abstract
Anaerobic co-fermentation (AcoF) of dairy cattle manure (DCM) and corn straw silage (CSS) for producing lactic acid (LA) and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) was investigated. Batch experiments were conducted at seven different DCM/CSS ratios and at mesophilic and thermophilic temperatures. Results indicated that the highest concentration of LA was 17.50 ± 0.70 g/L at DCM:CSS ratio of 1:3 and thermophilic temperature, while VFAs was 18.23 ± 2.45 g/L at mono-CSS fermentation and mesophilic temperature. High solubilization of thermophilic conditions contributed to LA accumulation in AcoF process. Presence of the CSS increased the relative abundance of Lactobacillus for LA production at thermophilic. Meanwhile, the abundance of Bifidobacterium was increased when CSS was added at mesophilic, which could conduce to VFAs production. This study provides a new route for enhancing the biotransformation of DCM and CSS into short-chain fatty acids, potentially bringing economic benefits to agricultural waste treatment.

Abstract
Urban waste can be valorized within a biorefinery approach, producing platform chemicals, biopolymers and energy. In this framework, hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) is a promising pre-treatment for improving biodegradability due to its high effectiveness and low cost. This paper deals with the effect of HC pre-treatment on the acidogenic co-fermentation process of thickened sewage sludge from a WWTP and seasonal vegetable waste from a wholesale market. Specifically, HC was assessed by testing two sets of parameters (i.e., treatment time of 30 and 50 min; vacuum pressure 1.4 and 2.0 bar; applied power 8 and 17 kW) to determine its effectiveness as a pre-treatment of the mixture. The highest increase in sCOD (+83%) and VFAs (from 1.93 to 17.29 gCODVFA L-1) was gained after 50 min of cavitation. Fermentations were conducted with not cavitated and cavitated mixtures at 37 °C on 4 L reactors in batch mode, then switched to semi-continuous with OLR of 8 kgTVS m-3 d-1 and HRT of 5-6.6 d. Good VFAs concentrations (12.94-18.27 gCODVFA L-1) and yields (0.44-0.53 gCODVFA gVS(0)-1) were obtained, which could be enhanced by pre-treatment optimization and pH control. The organic acid rich broth obtained was then assessed as a substrate for PHAs storage by C. necator. It yielded 0.37 g g-1 of polyhydroxybutyrate, such biopolymer resulted to have analogous physicochemical characteristics of commercial equivalent. The only generated side-stream would be the solid-rich fraction of the fermented effluent, which valorization was assessed through BMP tests, showing a higher SGP of 0.42 Nm3 kgTVS-1 for the cavitated.

Abstract
Fermentation (not anaerobic digestion) is an emerging biotechnology to transform waste into easily assimilable organic compounds such as volatile fatty acids, lactic acid and alcohols. Co-fermentation, the simultaneous fermentation of two or more waste, is an opportunity for wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to increase the yields of sludge mono-fermentation. Most publications have studied waste activated sludge co-fermentation with food waste or agri-industrial waste. Mixing ratio, pH and temperature are the most studied variables. The highest fermentation yields have been generally achieved in mixtures dominated by the most biodegradable substrate at circumneutral pH and mesophilic conditions. Nonetheless, most experiments have been performed in batch assays which results are driven by the capabilities of the starting microbial community and do not allow evaluating the microbial acclimation that occurs under continuous conditions. Temperature, pH, hydraulic retention time and organic load are variables that can be controlled to optimise the performance of continuous co-fermenters (i.e., favour waste hydrolysis and fermentation and limit the proliferation of methanogens). This review also discusses the integration of co-fermentation with other biotechnologies in WWTPs. Overall, this review presents a comprehensive and critical review of the achievements on co-fermentation research and lays the foundation for future research.

Abstract
This work explored the feasibility of paper waste (PW)/sewage sludge (SS) co-fermentation for volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production, and disclosed its correlation with the key operational parameters (i.e., pH and PW/SS ratio). The results indicated that the maximal VFAs was 251.55 mg COD/g TSS at optimal conditions, which was approximately 10-folds of sole SS fermentation. PW feeding contributed to the bioavailable substrates and C/N balance during co-fermentation process. The pH exhibited evident impacts on organics solubilization/hydrolysis, in which acidic pH was more beneficial for carbohydrates metabolism while alkaline pH was better for proteins. Under optimal operational conditions, the metabolic functions associated with VFAs production (i.e., substrate membrane transport, intracellular metabolism and VFAs biosynthesis) were up-regulated. Moreover, functional microorganisms (i.e., Saccharofermentans and Bacteroides) responsible for VFAs generation were enriched. This work provided an innovative approach to recovery valuable products from biowastes, and in-depth understandings of microbial features in PW/SS co-fermentation systems.

Abstract
Further characterization to properly assess the fate of organic matter quality during anaerobic digestion and organic carbon mineralization in soils is required. Organic matter quality based on its accessibility and complexity was employed to successfully classify 28 substrate/digestate pairs through principal components and hierarchical clustering analysis. The two first components explained 58.02% of the variability and four main groups were separated according to the feedstock type. A decrease in the accessibility (16-66%) and an increase in the complexity (34-98%) of the most accessible fractions was noticed. Besides, an increase of non-biodegradable compounds (17-66%) was globally observed after anaerobic digestion. The observed trends in the conversion of organic matter during anaerobic digestion have allowed to fill the gap in the modeling of the anaerobic digestion process chain. Indeed, partial least squares regressions have accurately predicted the organic matter quality of digestates from their inputs (R2 = 0.831, Q2 = 0.593) although the digester operational conditions (temperature and hydraulic retention time) were non-explicative enough. As a novel approach, the predicted digestate quality was used to feed a partial least squares regression model previously developed to predict organic carbon mineralization in soil. The combined models have predicted experimental organic carbon mineralization in soil (R2 = 0.697) with a model quality similar to the model for organic carbon mineralization in soil (R2 = 0.894). This is the first study that has successfully conceived an additional step in the prediction of organic matter fate from raw substrate before anaerobic digestion to soil carbon mineralization.

Abstract
Nowadays, increasing attention has been drawn to biological valorization of organic wastes. Wherein, propionic acid-rich fermentation (PARF) has become a focal point of research. The objective of this review is to make a thorough investigation on the potential of PARF production and give future outlook. By discussing the key factors affecting PARF including substrate types, pH, temperature, retention time, etc., and various improving methods to enhance PARF including different pretreatments, inoculation optimization and immobilization, a comprehensive summary on how to achieve PARF from organic waste is presented. Then, current application of PARF liquid is concluded, which is found to play an essential role in the efficient denitrification and phosphorus removal of wastewater and preparation of microbial lipids. Finally, the environmental performance of PARF production is reviewed through life cycle assessment studies, and environmentally sensitive sectors are summarized for process optimization, providing a reference for waste management in low carbon scenarios.

Abstract
Food waste biorefineries for the production of biofuels, platform chemicals and other bio-based materials can significantly reduce a huge environmental burden and provide sustainable resources for the production of chemicals and materials. This will significantly contribute to the transition of the linear based economy to a more circular economy. A variety of chemicals, biofuels and materials can be produced from food waste by the integrated biorefinery approach. This enhances the bioeconomy and helps toward the design of more green, ecofriendly, and sustainable methods of material productions that contribute to sustainable development goals. The waste biorefinery is a tool to achieve a value-added product that can provide a better utilization of materials and resources while minimizing and/or eliminating environmental impacts. Recently, food waste biorefineries have gained momentum for the production of biofuels, chemicals, and bio-based materials due to the shifting of regulations and policies towards sustainable development. This review attempts to explore the state of the art of food waste biorefinery and the products associated with it.
