Development and simulation of a struvite crystallization fluidized bed reactor with enhanced external recirculation for phosphorous and ammonium recovery

Effect of recirculation and hydraulic loading rate on ammonium and phosphate recovery from fertilizer industry wastewater

This study aimed to determine the optimum recirculation ratio and hydraulic loading rate for the recovery process of ammonium and phosphate, and study the formation, morphology, and structure of struvite crystals. This study provides a crystallization method to treat fertilizer wastewater using a continuous system and recirculation, including a fluidized bed reactor (FBR). Ammonium and phosphate were recovered from fertilizer industry wastewater using a continuous FBR under different recirculation ratios (3, 6, and 9) and loading rates (0.39 L/min, 0.59 L/min, and 0.79 L/min). MgCl2 was used as the precipitant with a 1.5:1 molarity ratio [Mg2+]:[PO43-]. The results showed that 55.71% phosphate and 49.69% ammonium could be recovered at recirculation ratio and hydraulic loading rate were 9 and 0.39 L/min, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy-energy diffraction X-ray analysis showed that the formed crystals comprised 80% struvite. Further, a high recirculation ratio and low loading rate resulted in higher ammonium and phosphate recovery efficiencies. These results indicated that a long detention time of treated wastewater can increase the nutrient recovery.

MgFe-LDH@biochars for removing ammonia nitrogen and phosphorus from biogas slurry: Synthesis routes, composite performance, and adsorption mechanisms

Layered double hydroxide-biochar composites (LDH@BCs) have been developed for ammonia nitrogen (AN) and phosphorus (P) removal from wastewater. Improvement of LDH@BCs was limited due to the lack of comparative evaluation based on LDH@BCs characteristics and synthetic methods and information on the adsorption properties of LDH@BCs for N and P from natural wastewater. In this study, MgFe-LDH@BCs were synthesized by three different co-precipitation procedures. The differences in physicochemical and morphological properties were compared. They were then employed to remove AN and P from biogas slurry. The adsorption performance of the three MgFe-LDH@BCs was compared and evaluated. Different synthesis procedures can significantly affect the physicochemical and morphological characteristics of MgFe-LDH@BCs. The LDH@BC composite fabricated through a novel method (labeled 'MgFe-LDH@BC1') has the largest specific surface area, Mg and Fe content, and excellent magnetic response performance. Moreover, the composite has the best adsorption property of AN and P from biogas slurry (30.0% and 81.8%, respectively). The main reaction mechanisms include memory effect, ion exchange, and co-precipitation. Applying 2% MgFe-LDH@BC1 saturated with AN and P adsorption from biogas slurry as a fertilizer substitute can substantially improve soil fertility and increase plant production by 139.3%. These results indicate that the facile LDH@BC synthesis method is an effective method to overcome the shortcomings of LDH@BC in practical application, and provide a basis for further exploration of the potential application of biochar based fertilizers in agriculture.

Synchronously recovering different nutrient ions from wastewater by using selective electrodialysis

Digestive slurry normally contains various nutrient ions with high concentrations, including NH₄⁺, PO₄^3-, K⁺, Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺ and SO₄^2-, which is a resource pool for nutrient recovery. In this study, a synchronously cationic and anionic selective electrodialysis (SCAE) was developed to recover anionic and cationic nutrient ions. Results showed that SCAE could synchronously recover more than 85.0%, 90.2% and 97.8% of PO₄^3-, SO₄^2- and other cations (including NH₄⁺, K⁺, Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺) from the simulated digestive slurry, respectively. The ionic permeation sequence, NH₄⁺ > K⁺ > Ca²⁺ > Mg²⁺ for cations, and SO₄^2- > PO₄^3- for anions, was affected by hydrated radius and hydration numbers, and did not alter despite the variation in electric field. High electrolyte concentration in the product streams would promote the recovery efficiency of both divalent cations and anions due to the ionic replacement effect and the demand for charge neutrality. Under continuous operation, the maximum concentrations of PO₄^3-, SO₄^2-, Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, NH₄⁺ and K⁺ in product streams reached 231.9, 496.6, 180.7, 604.3, 9,648.4 and 4,571.4 mg·L^-1, respectively. By directly mixing different streams, the feasibility of producing mineral fertilizers without dosing externally precipitating chemicals was proved. Struvite, NH₄HSO₄ and potassium chloride minerals were produced successfully. The outcome provided an optional method for nutrient recovery from wastewater.

A review of advances in valorization and post-treatment of anaerobic digestion liquid fraction effluent

Traditionally, digestate is considered a waste, which is used as fertiliser in the agriculture industry. Recent studies focus on increasing the profitability of digestate by extracting reusable nutrients to promote biogas plants cost-effectiveness, sustainable management and circular economy. This review focuses on the post-treatment and valorization of liquor which is produced by solid-liquid fractioning of digestate. Nutrient recovery and removal from liquor are possible through mechanical, physicochemical and biological procedures. The processes discussed involve complex procedures that differ in economic value, feasibility, legislative restrictions and performance. The parameters that should be considered to employ these techniques are influenced by liquor characteristics, topography, climate conditions and available resources. These are key parameters to keep in mind during designing and manufacturing a biogas plant. In the following chapters, a discussion on available liquor treatment methods takes place. The present study examines the critical aspects of the available liquor treatment methods.

Enhanced struvite generation and separation by magnesium anode electrolysis coupled with cathode electrodeposition

Adding magnesium ions (Mg²⁺) to produce struvite is an important method to recover nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater. Both the Mg²⁺ source and subsequent separation of struvite are key factors for the utilization of struvite. In this study, we developed an efficient method to recover nutrient salts from wastewater using sacrificial Mg anodes to generate struvite, with its simultaneous separation through cathode electrodeposition. The anode-released Mg²⁺ reacted with NH₄⁺-N and PO₄^3--P in bulk solution to form struvite, which was more intense on the cathode surface due to the relatively higher pH environment from hydrogen evolution, resulting in most of the struvite being deposited on the cathode surface and simultaneously separated out of the bulk solution. Using a cathode with a higher solution-cathode interface area and relatively low current density facilitated struvite deposition. Results showed that under optimal electrolysis condition (5.76 A/m², pH 8.5, 180 min, and 1.2:1.0 Mg:P), 91% of the undissolved substances as the phosphate precipitation were deposited on the graphite cathode surface, and the proportion of struvite in the deposition reached 41.52%. This study provides a novel electrochemical method for struvite synthesis and separation for the recovery of nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater.
