Thin film nanocomposite membrane with triple-layer structure for enhanced water flux and antibacterial capacity

Thin-Film Composite Membranes Interlayered with Amphiphilic MoS2 Nanosheets via Controllable Interfacial Polymerization for Enhanced Desalination Performance

Polyamide (PA)-based nanofiltration (NF) membranes have demonstrated extensive applications for a sustainable water-energy-environment nexus. A rational control of interfacial polymerization (IP) is highly efficacious to enhance NF separation performance yet remains a technical challenge. Herein, we proposed a regulation strategy of constructing amphiphilic molybdenum disulfide/cetyltrimethylammonium bromide interlayer atop the Kevlar hydrogel substrate. The amphiphilic nanosheet interlayered NF membrane exhibited a crumpled PA surface with an elevated cross-linking degree of 76.9%, leading to an excellent water permeance (16.8 L m-2 h-1 bar-1) and an impressive Na2SO4 rejection (99.1%). Meanwhile, the selectivity coefficient of Na2SO4/NaCl of the optimized TFC membrane reached 91, surpassing those of the recently reported NF membranes. Moreover, the optimized membrane exhibited a desirable rejection of over 90% against Mn2+ and Cu2+ in actual textile wastewater. Importantly, the underlying NF membrane formation mechanism was elucidated via both experiments and molecular simulations. The synchronous control of mass and heat transfer of IP process offers a new methodology for the state-of-the-art membrane fabrication, which opens more avenues in softening of brackish water and purification of industrial wastewater containing heavy metal ions.

Performance improvement of polyethersulfone membranes with Ti3AlCN MAX phase in the treatment of organic and inorganic pollutants

In this work, the hydrophobic polyethersulfone (PES) membrane was modified by incorporating Ti3AlCN MAX phase. Synthesis of Ti3AlCN MAX phase was performed using the reactive sintering method. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed a 3D compressed layered morphology for the synthesized MAX phase. The Ti3AlCN MAX phase was added to the casting solution, and the mixed-matrix membranes were fabricated by the non-solvent induced phase inversion method. The performance and antifouling features of bare and modified membranes were explored by pure water flux, flux recovery ratio (FRR), and fouling resistance parameters. Through the modification of membranes by introducing the Ti3AlCN MAX phase, the enhancement of these features was observed, in which the membrane containing 1 wt% of MAX phase showed 17.7 L/m2.h.bar of permeability and 98.6% for FRR. Also, the separation efficiency of all membranes was evaluated by rejecting organic and inorganic pollutants. The Ti3AlCN MAX membranes could reject 96%, 95%, and 88% of reactive blue 50, Rose Bengal, and azithromycin antibiotics, respectively, as well as 98%, 80%, 86%, and 36% of Pb2+, As5+, Na2SO4, and NaCl, respectively. Finally, the outcomes indicated the Ti3AlCN MAX phase was an excellent and efficient novel additive for modifying the PES membrane.

Polycation-Intercalated MXene Membrane with Enhanced Permselective and Anti-Microbial Properties

Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial-based membranes feature attractive properties for molecular separation and transport, which exhibit huge potential in various chemical processes. However, the low permeability and bio-fouling of the MXene membrane in water treatment become huge obstacles to its practical application. Herein, a highly permselective and anti-bacterial 2D nanofiltration membrane is fabricated by intercalating a polycation of polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDDA) into the Ti3C2Tx MXene laminar architecture through a facile and patternable electrostatic assembly strategy. As a result, the as-fabricated Ti3C2Tx/PDDA composite membrane exhibits higher water permeance up to 73.4 L m-2 h-1 with a rejection above 94.6% for MgCl2. The resultant membrane simultaneously possesses good resistance to swelling and long-term stability in water environments, even after 8 h. Additionally, the Ti3C2Tx/PDDA membrane also demonstrates a high flux recovery ratio of nearly 96.1% to bovine serum albumin proteins after being cleaned. More importantly, the current membrane shows excellent anti-adhesive and anti-microbial activity against Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), with inhibition rates of 90% and 95% against E. coli and S. aureus, respectively. This holds great potential for the application of the polyelectrolyte-intercalated MXene membrane in serving as a promising platform to separate molecules and/or ions in an aquatic environment.

In Situ Formation of Silver Nanoparticles Induced by Cl-Doped Carbon Quantum Dots for Enhanced Separation and Antibacterial Performance of Nanofiltration Membrane

Polyamide (PA) nanofiltration (NF) membranes suffer from biofouling, which will deteriorate their separation performance. In this study, we proposed a strategy to incorporate silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) into PA NF membranes in situ, in order to simultaneously enhance water permeability and antibacterial performance. The chloride-doped carbon quantum dots (Cl-CQDs) with photocatalytic performance were pre-embedded in the PA selective layer. Under visible light irradiation, the photogenerated charge carriers generated by Cl-CQDs rapidly transported to silver ions (Ag+ ions), resulting in the in situ formation of Ag NPs. The proposed strategy avoided the problem of aggregating Ag NPs, and the amount of Ag NPs on the membrane surfaces could be easily tuned by changing silver nitrate (AgNO3) concentrations and immersion times. These uniformly dispersed Ag NPs increased membrane hydrophilicity. Thus, the obtained thin film nanocomposite Ag NPs (TFN-Ag) membrane exhibited an improved water flux (31.74 L m-2 h-1), which was ~2.98 times that of the pristine PA membrane; meanwhile, the sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) rejection rate was 96.11%. The sterilization rates of the TFN-Ag membrane against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) were 99.55% and 99.52%, respectively. Thus, this facile strategy simultaneously improved the permeability and antibacterial property of PA NF membranes.

Membrane processes for environmental remediation of nanomaterials: Potentials and challenges

Nanomaterials have gained huge attention with their wide range of applications. This is mainly driven by their unique properties. Nanomaterials include nanoparticles, nanotubes, nanofibers, and many other nanoscale structures have been widely assessed for improving the performance in different applications. However, with the wide implementation and utilization of nanomaterials, another challenge is being present when these materials end up in the environment, i.e. air, water, and soil. Environmental remediation of nanomaterials has recently gained attention and is concerned with removing nanomaterials from the environment. Membrane filtration processes have been widely considered a very efficient tool for the environmental remediation of different pollutants. Membranes with their different operating principles from size exclusions as in microfiltration, to ionic exclusion as in reverse osmosis, provide an effective tool for the removal of different types of nanomaterials. This work comprehends, summarizes, and critically discusses the different approaches for the environmental remediation of engineered nanomaterials using membrane filtration processes. Microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF), and nanofiltration (NF) have been shown to effectively remove nanomaterials from the air and aqueous environments. In MF, the adsorption of nanomaterials to membrane material was found to be the main removal mechanism. While in UF and NF, the main mechanism was size exclusion. Membrane fouling, hence requiring proper cleaning or replacement was found to be the major challenge for UF and NF processes. While limited adsorption capacity of nanomaterial along with desorption was found to be the main challenges for MF.

Smart utilisation of reverse solute diffusion in forward osmosis for water treatment: A mini review

Forward osmosis (FO) has been widely studied as a promising technology in wastewater treatment, but undesirable reverse solute diffusion (RSD) is inevitable in the FO process. The RSD is generally regarded as a negative factor for the FO process, resulting in the loss of draw solutes and reduced FO efficiency. Conventional strategies to address RSD focus on reducing the amount of reverse draw solutes by fabricating high selective FO membranes and/or selecting the draw solute with low diffusion. However, since RSD is inevitable, doubts have been raised about the strategies to cope with the already occurring reverse draw solutes in the feed solution, and the feasibility to positively utilise the RSD phenomenon to improve the FO process. Herein, we review the state-of-the-art applications of RSD and their benefits such as improving selectivity and maintaining the stability of the feed solution for both independent FO processes and FO integrated processes. We also provide an outlook and discuss important considerations, including membrane fouling, membrane development and draw/feed solution properties, in RSD utilisation for water and wastewater treatment.

Recent advances in thin film nanocomposite membranes containing an interlayer (TFNi): fabrication, applications, characterization and perspectives

Polyamide (PA) reverse osmosis and nanofiltration membranes have been applied widely for desalination and wastewater reuse in the last 5-10 years. A novel thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane featuring a nanomaterial interlayer (TFNi) has emerged in recent years and attracted the attention of researchers. The novel TFNi membranes are prepared from different nanomaterials and with different loading methods. The choices of intercalated nanomaterials, substrate layers and loading methods are based on the object to be treated. The introduction of nanostructured interlayers improves the formation of the PA separation layer and provides ultrafast water molecule transport channels. In this manner, the TFNi membrane mitigates the trade-off between permeability and selectivity reported for polyamide composite membranes. In addition, TFNi membranes enhance the removal of metal ions and organics and the recovery of organic solvents during nanofiltration and reverse osmosis, which is critical for environmental ecology and industrial applications. This review provides statistics and analyzes the developments in TFNi membranes over the last 5-10 years. The latest research results are reviewed, including the selection of the substrate and interlayer materials, preparation methods, specific application areas and more advanced characterization methods. Mechanistic aspects are analyzed to encourage future research, and potential mechanisms for industrialization are discussed.

Purifying water with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs)-incorporated membranes: Recent advancements and critical challenges

In the face of the growing global water crisis, membrane technology is a promising means of purifying water and wastewater. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been widely used to improve membrane performance, for antibiofouling, and to aid in photocatalytic degradation, thermal response, and electro-conductivity. However, several critical issues such as short antimicrobial periods, trade-off effects and silver inactivation seriously restrict the engineering application of AgNPs-incorporated membranes. In addition, there is controversy around the use of AgNPs given the toxic preparation process and environmental/biological risks. Hence, it is of great significance to summarize and analyze the recent developments and critical challenges in the use of AgNPs-incorporated membranes in water and wastewater treatment, and to propose potential solutions. We reviewed the different properties and functions of AgNPs and their corresponding applications in AgNPs-incorporated membranes. Recently, multifunctional, novel AgNP-incorporated membranes combined with other functional materials have been developed with high-performance. We further clarified the synergistic mechanisms between AgNPs and these novel nanomaterials and/or polymers, and elucidated their functions and roles in membrane separation. Finally, the critical challenges of AgNPs-incorporated membranes and the proposed solutions were outlined: i) Prolonging the antimicrobial cycle through long-term and controlled AgNPs release; ii) Overcoming the trade-off effect and organic fouling of the AgNPs-incorporated membranes; iii) Preparation of sustainable AgNPs-incorporated membranes; iv) Addressing biotoxicity induced by AgNPs; and v) Deactivation of AgNPs-incorporated membrane. Overall, this review provides a comprehensive discussion of the advancements and challenges of AgNPs-incorporated membranes and guides the development of more robust, multi-functional and sustainable AgNPs-incorporated membranes.

Modification strategies of membranes with enhanced Anti-biofouling properties for wastewater Treatment: A review

This review addresses composite membranes used for wastewater treatment, focusing heavily on the anti-biofouling properties of such membranes. Biofouling caused by the development of a thick biofilm on the membrane surface is a major issue that reduces water permeance and reduces its lifetime. Biofilm formation and adhesion are mitigated by modifying membranes with two-dimensional or zero-dimensional carbon-based nanomaterials or their modified substituents. In particular, nanomaterials based on graphene, including graphene oxide and carbon quantum dots, are mainly used as nanofillers in the membrane. Functionalization of the nanofillers with various organic ligands or compositing the nanofiller with other materials, such as silver nanoparticles, enhances the bactericidal ability of composite membranes. Moreover, such membrane modifications reduce biofilm adhesion while increasing water permeance and salt/dye rejection. This review discusses the recent literature on developing graphene oxide-based and carbon quantum dot-based composite membranes for biofouling-resistant wastewater treatment.

Mitigation of membrane biofouling via immobilizing Ag-MOFs on composite membrane surface for extractive membrane bioreactor

The extractive membrane bioreactor (EMBR) combines an extractive membrane process and bioreactor to treat highly saline recalcitrant organic wastewater, in which the organic contaminations diffuse through a semi-permeable polydimethysiloxane (PDMS) composite membrane from the feed wastewater to the receiving biomedium. During the long-term EMBR operation, membrane biofouling is an inevitable phenomenon, which is one of the main obstacles impeding its wide applications. The excessive biofilm deposited on membrane surface could significantly reduce the organic mass transfer coefficient of composite membranes by more than 40%. Therefore, in this work, the silver (Ag)-metal organic frameworks (MOFs) were synthesized and immobilized on the PDMS surface of nanofibrous composite membranes to mitigate the membrane biofouling. The robustness of Ag-MOFs coating on membrane surface was well demonstrated by ultrasonic treatment. In addition, the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were coated on the PDMS surface of composite membranes for comparison. In contrast with the unmodified composite membrane #M0, the AgNPs-coated (#M1) and Ag-MOFs modified (#M2) composite membranes possessed less hydrophobic and negatively charged surfaces due to the coating layers. Although the modified membranes exhibited lower phenol mass transfer coefficients (k0's) in the aqueous-aqueous extractive membrane process due to these additional modification layers, both #M1 and #M2 displayed better long-term performance in the 12-days continuous EMBR operations due to their excellent anti-biofouling properties. Moreover, #M2 exhibited the most stable EMBR performance among the composite membranes developed in this work and other reported membranes with a finally stabilized k0 of 33.0 × 10-7 m/s (89% of initial k0). The least amounts of proteins, polysaccharides and total suspended solids (TSS) on the surface of tested #M2 also demonstrated its outstanding biofouling resistance. This excellent anti-biofouling performance should be attributed to the stable, controlled and long-lasting Ag+release from Ag-MOFs, as well as its less hydrophobic and negative charged surface properties, which made #M2 undergo the k0's increasing and gradual stabilization stages in the long-term EMBR operations.
