Removal of chlorpyrifos and its hydrolytic metabolite in microcosm-scale constructed wetlands under soda saline-alkaline condition: Mass balance and intensification strategies

Development and trends of constructed wetland substrates over the past 30 years: a literature visualization analysis based on CiteSpace

Constructed wetland substrates (CWSs) have received considerable attention owing to their importance in adsorbing and degrading pollutants, providing growth attachment points for microorganisms, and supporting wetland plants. There are differences in the configurations and functions of constructed wetlands (CWs) for treating different water bodies and sewage, resulting in a wide variety of substrates. Research on the application and mechanism of CWSs is not sufficiently systematic. Therefore, the current research advancements and hotspots must be identified. Hence, we used CiteSpace to analyze 1955 English publications from the core collection database of the Web of Science to assess the current state of the CWS research field. Based on the cooperative network analysis, the roles of various countries, institutions, and authors in research on CWSs were reviewed. Keyword co-occurrence and cluster analyses were used to discuss the transformation of CWSs from removing traditional pollutants to emerging pollutants and the transition from incorporating natural substrates to artificial substrates. Finally, we underscored the need for more emphasis to be placed on the collocation and application of the CWSs at different latitudes. Furthermore, the substrate micro-interface process and its effects on the interaction patterns of pollutants and microorganisms should be thoroughly investigated to provide theoretical guidance for the development of wetland applications and mechanisms.

Pesticide contamination in agro-ecosystems: toxicity, impacts, and bio-based management strategies

Continuous rise in application of pesticides in the agro-ecosystems in order to ensure food supply to the ever-growing population is of greater concern to the human health and the environment. Once entered into the agro-ecosystem, the fate and transport of pesticides is determined largely by the nature of pesticides and the soil attributes, in addition to the soil-inhabiting microbes, fauna, and flora. Changes in the soil microbiological actions, soil properties, and enzymatic activities resulting from pesticide applications are the important factors substantially affecting the soil productivity. Disturbances in the microbial community composition may lead to the considerable perturbations in cycling of major nutrients, metals, and subsequent uptake by plants. Indiscriminate applications are linked with the accumulation of pesticides in plant-based foods, feeds, and animal products. Furthermore, rapid increase in the application of pesticides having long half-life has also been reported to contaminate the nearby aquatic environments and accumulation in the plants, animals, and microbes surviving there. To circumvent the negative consequences of pesticide application, multitude of techniques falling in physical, chemical, and biological categories are presented by different investigators. In the present study, important findings pertaining to the pesticide contamination in cultivated agricultural soils; toxicity on soil microbes, plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates; effects on soil characteristics; and alleviation of toxicity by bio-based management approaches have been thoroughly reviewed. With the help of bibliometric analysis, thematic evolution and research trends on the bioremediation of pesticides in the agro-ecosystems have also been highlighted.

Pesticide degradation in an integrated constructed wetland: Insights from compound-specific isotope analysis and 16S rDNA sequencing

Carbon isotope analysis and the 16S rDNA sequencing were adopted to investigate the degradation process of chlorpyrifos during its transport in the integrated constructed wetland (ICW). Firstly, the extent of concentration decrease of chlorpyrifos was examined, and the removal efficiency in the first 36 h was found to be the highest. The removal rate reached 96.83 % after 96 h, and this process fit to the first-order kinetic model, with a kinetic constant (k) of 0.066 h^-1. A significant carbon isotope fractionation was observed, with a change of the δ¹³C values from -26.54 ± 0.07 ‰ to -25.41 ± 0.08 ‰. The average chlorpyrifos biodegradation proportion reached 71.23 % (60.42 %-85.04 %), and it was predicted that about 11.79 %-36.41 % of chlorpyrifos removal in the ICW was attributed to abiotic factors. The outlet of the subsurface flow constructed wetland saw the highest D^∗/B^∗ value (1.38-3.88), indicating that the remaining fraction of dilution was much more significant than that of degradation in this period. The top 20 phyla of microbial community were identified in the ICW. Proteobacteria was the most dominant phylum, accounting for >40 % of the bacterial communities in all sampling locations. Acidobacteria and Bacteroidetes were the second and third dominant phyla. At the genus level, the microbial community composition differed more greatly in every stage of the ICW, and the spatial distribution difference was quite significant in the ICW. This study is important to figure out the migration and transformation of chlorpyrifos when the ICW was adopted as a removal tool for organic micro-pollutants, and more similar studies could be carried out in the future to promote the evaluation of pollutant removal capacity of the ICWs, and to further develop the application of stable isotope analysis of compounds in the natural environment.

Persistence behavior of chlorpyrifos and biological toxicity mechanism to cucumbers under greenhouse conditions

Chlorpyrifos, a broadly utilized insecticide, inhibits many cellular and physiological processes in plants. Here, the phyto-toxicity of chlorpyrifos on cucumber plants, as well as the dissipation kinetics of chlorpyrifos in leaves, were investigated. Those results showed that chlorpyrifos accumulated primarily in the leaves under normal agrochemical spraying conditions with the half-lives among 2.48-4.59 days. Residues of the primary metabolite, 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCP), rapidly accumulated in plant tissues and soil with chlorpyrifos degradation. The application amount of chlorpyrifos had a significant effect on the persistence of chlorpyrifos and TCP in both plant and soil environments. Chlorpyrifos generated excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA), which led to oxidative damage. High chlorpyrifos stress even inhibited antioxidant enzymes. The photosynthetic system and gas exchange were suppressed, which ultimately lead to inefficient light use under chlorpyrifos stress. Morphological results revealed that chlorpyrifos induced membrane damage and harmed organelles such as mitochondria and chloroplast. Noninvasive micro-test technology (NMT) showed that chlorpyrifos promoted intracellular Ca²⁺ influx and efflux of H⁺ and K⁺. The Ca²⁺ influx was significantly stimulated after both high and low chlorpyrifos treatment with the minimum value of - 336.33 pmol·cm^-2·s^-1 at 258 s and - 155.68 pmol·cm^-2·s^-1 at 288 s, respectively. Chlorpyrifos stress reversed the H⁺ influx to an efflux in cucumber mesophyll with the mean value of 0.45 ± 0.03 pmol·cm^-2·s^-1 and 0.19 ± 0.03 pmol·cm^-2·s^-1 in cucumber plants under low and high chlorpyrifos stress. High chlorpyrifos stress dramatically increase K⁺ efflux in cucumber leaves by 13.68 times higher than the control. We suggest that ion homeostasis destruction, accompanied by ROS, resulted in oxidative damage to the mesophyll cell of cucumber seedlings.

Potential of Canna indica in Constructed Wetlands for Wastewater Treatment: A Review

This article reviews investigations in which Canna indica was utilized in constructed wetlands (CW) for wastewater treatment of a variety types. It is strongly urged that ornamental flowering plants be used in CWs as monoculture or mixed species to improve the appearance of CWs whilst still treating wastewater. Plants play important roles in CWs by giving the conditions for physical filtration of wastewater, a large specific surface area for microbial growth, and a source of carbohydrates for bacteria. They absorb nutrients and integrate them into plant tissues. They release oxygen into the substrate, establishing a zone in which aerobic microorganisms can thrive and chemical oxidation can occur. They also provide wildlife habitat and make wastewater treatment system more visually attractive. The selection of plant species for CW is an important aspect during the CW design process. Canna indica’s effectiveness in CWs has shown encouraging results for eliminating contaminants from wastewater. There is still a scarcity of information on the mechanisms involved in removal of specific contaminants such as pharmaceuticals, personal care products, hormones, pesticides and steroids and their potential toxicity to the plants. Therefore, this paper reviews some published information about the performance of Canna indica in wastewater treatment, as well as potential areas for future research.

A Novel Constructed Wetland Combined with Microbial Desalination Cells and its Application

Wastewater recycling can alleviate the shortage of water resources. Saline water is seldom treated with biological processes, and its recycling rate is low. Constructed wetland (CW) is a safe, economical, and ecological water treatment method. However, the saline water treatment performance of CW is not good. Microbial desalination cells (MDC) utilizing a bioelectrochemical approach achieve functions of desalination and power generation. In this study, MDC was used to strengthen CW to form a composite system, MDC-CW. Through optimization of design parameters, MDC-CW was applied in the treatment of salt-containing water. The average total nitrogen removal rate in MDC-CW-P1 reached 87.33% and the average COD removal rate was 92.79%. The average desalination rate of MDC-CW-P1 was 55.78% and the average voltage of MDC-CW-P1 reached 0.40 mV. Planting Canna indica in the MDC-CW was conducive to the functions of desalination and power generation. The above results were also verified by the microbial analysis results of gravels in the substrate, plant rhizosphere, and electrodes. In addition, the decontamination of the device mainly depended on the function of the bacteria commonly used in water treatment, such as Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes, whereas the generation of power depended on the function of Geobacter. Salt ions moved spontaneously to the cathode and anode under the influence of current generation so that the desalination function was realized under the selective isolation function of exchange membranes. The device design and laboratory applications of MDC-CW experimentally achieved the electrochemical function and broadened the treatment scale of CW.

A Literature Review of Wetland Treatment Systems Used to Treat Runoff Mixtures Containing Antibiotics and Pesticides from Urban and Agricultural Landscapes

Wetland treatment systems are used extensively across the world to mitigate surface runoff. While wetland treatment for nitrogen mitigation has been comprehensively reviewed, the implications of common-use pesticides and antibiotics on nitrogen reduction remain relatively unreviewed. Therefore, this review seeks to comprehensively assess the removal of commonly used pesticides and antibiotics and their implications for nitrogen removal in wetland treatment systems receiving non-point source runoff from urban and agricultural landscapes. A total of 181 primary studies were identified spanning 37 countries. Most of the reviewed publications studied pesticides (n = 153) entering wetlands systems, while antibiotics (n = 29) had fewer publications. Even fewer publications reviewed the impact of influent mixtures on nitrogen removal processes in wetlands (n = 16). Removal efficiencies for antibiotics (35–100%), pesticides (−619–100%), and nitrate-nitrogen (−113–100%) varied widely across the studies, with pesticides and antibiotics impacting microbial communities, the presence and type of vegetation, timing, and hydrology in wetland ecosystems. However, implications for the nitrogen cycle were dependent on the specific emerging contaminant present. A significant knowledge gap remains in how wetland treatment systems are used to treat non-point source mixtures that contain nutrients, pesticides, and antibiotics, resulting in an unknown regarding nitrogen removal efficiency as runoff contaminant mixtures evolve.

Mechanistic understanding of the pollutant removal and transformation processes in the constructed wetland system

Constructed wetland systems (CWs) are biologically and physically engineered systems to mimic the natural wetlands which can potentially treat the wastewater from the various point and nonpoint sources of pollution. The present study aims to review the various mechanisms involved in the different types of CWs for wastewater treatment and to elucidate their role in the effective functioning of the CWs. Several physical, chemical, and biological processes substantially influence the pollutant removal efficiency of CWs. Plants species Phragmites australis, Typha latifolia, and Typha angustifolia are most widely used in CWs. The rate of nitrogen (N) removal is significantly affected by emergent vegetation cover and type of CWs. Hybrid CWs (HCWS) removal efficiency for nutrients, metals, pesticides, and other pollutants is higher than a single constructed wetland. The contaminant removal efficiency of the vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands (VSSFCW) commonly used for the treatment of domestic and municipal wastewater ranges between 31% and 99%. Biochar/zeolite addition as substrate material further enhances the wastewater treatment of CWs. Innovative components (substrate materials, plant species) and factors (design parameters, climatic conditions) sustaining the long-term sink of the pollutants, such as nutrients and heavy metals in the CWs should be further investigated in the future. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Constructed wetland systems (CWs) are efficient natural treatment system for on-site contaminants removal from wastewater. Denitrification, nitrification, microbial and plant uptake, sedimentation and adsorption are crucial pollutant removal mechanisms. Phragmites australis, Typha latifolia, and Typha angustifolia are widely used emergent plants in constructed wetlands. Hydraulic retention time (HRT), water flow regimes, substrate, plant, and microbial biomass substantially affect CWs treatment performance.
