The influence of air pollution by PM2.5, PM10 and associated heavy metals on the parameters of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest

Associations of occupational exposure to micro-LiNiCoMnO2 particles with systemic inflammation and cardiac dysfunction in cathode material production for lithium batteries

Micro-LiNiCoMnO2 (MNCM), a cathode material with highest market share, has increasing demand with the growth of lithium battery industry. However, whether MNCM exposure brings adverse effects to workers remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the association between MNCM exposure with systemic inflammation and cardiac function. A cross-sectional study of 347 workers was undertaken from the MNCM production industry in Guangdong province, China in 2020. Metals in urine were measured using ICP-MS. The associations between metals, systemic inflammation, and cardiac function were appraised using a linear or logistic regression model. Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) and generalized weighted quantile sum (gWQS) models were used to explore mixed metal exposures. The analysis of interaction and mediation was adopted to assess the role of inflammation in the relation between urinary metals and cardiac function. We observed that the levels of lithium (Li) and cobalt (Co) were positively associated with systemic inflammation and heart rate. The amount of Co contributed the highest weight on the increased systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) (59.8%), the system inflammation response index (SIRI) (44.3%), and heart rate (65.0%). Based on the mediation analysis, we estimated that SII mediated 32.3% and 20.9% of the associations between Li and Co with heart rate, and SIRI mediated 44.6% and 22.2% of the associations between Li and Co with heart rate, respectively. This study demonstrated for the first time that MNCM exposure increased the risk of workers' systemic inflammation and elevated heart rate, which were contributed by the excessive Li and Co exposure. Additionally, it indicates that systemic inflammation was a major mediator of the associations of Li and Co with cardiac function in MNCM production workers.

PM10-bound trace elements in pan-European urban atmosphere

Although many studies have discussed the impact of Europe's air quality, very limited research focused on the detailed phenomenology of ambient trace elements (TEs) in PM10 in urban atmosphere. This study compiled long-term (2013-2022) measurements of speciation of ambient urban PM10 from 55 sites of 7 countries (Switzerland, Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, UK), aiming to elucidate the phenomenology of 20 TEs in PM10 in urban Europe. The monitoring sites comprised urban background (UB, n = 26), traffic (TR, n = 10), industrial (IN, n = 5), suburban background (SUB, n = 7), and rural background (RB, n = 7) types. The sampling campaigns were conducted using standardized protocols to ensure data comparability. In each country, PM10 samples were collected over a fixed period using high-volume air samplers. The analysis encompassed the spatio-temporal distribution of TEs, and relationships between TEs at each site. Results indicated an annual average for the sum of 20 TEs of 90 ± 65 ng/m3, with TR and IN sites exhibiting the highest concentrations (130 ± 66 and 131 ± 80 ng/m3, respectively). Seasonal variability in TEs concentrations, influenced by emission sources and meteorology, revealed significant differences (p < 0.05) across all monitoring sites. Estimation of TE concentrations highlighted distinct ratios between non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic metals, with Zn (40 ± 49 ng/m3), Ti (21 ± 29 ng/m3), and Cu (23 ± 35 ng/m3) dominating non-carcinogenic TEs, while Cr (5 ± 7 ng/m3), and Ni (2 ± 6 ng/m3) were prominent among carcinogenic ones. Correlations between TEs across diverse locations and seasons varied, in agreement with differences in emission sources and meteorological conditions. This study provides valuable insights into TEs in pan-European urban atmosphere, contributing to a comprehensive dataset for future environmental protection policies.

Spatial-temporal evolution characteristics of PM2.5 and its driving mechanism: spatially explicit insights from Shanxi Province, China

In China, despite the fact that the atmospheric environment quality has continued to improve in recent years, the PM2.5 pollution still had not been controlled fundamentally and its driving mechanism was complex which remained to be explored. Based on the 1-km ground-level PM2.5 datasets of China from 2000 to 2020, this study combined spatial autocorrelation, trend analysis, geographical detector, and multi-scale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) model to explore the spatial-temporal evolution of PM2.5 in Shanxi Province and revealed its complex driving mechanism behind this process. The results reflected that (1) there was a pronounced spatial clustering of PM2.5 concentration within Shanxi Province, with PM2.5 concentrations decreasing from southwest to northeast. From 2000 to 2020, the levels of PM2.5 pollution demonstrated a decline over time, with its concentrations decreasing by 9.15 µg/m3 overall. The Hurst exponent indicated a projected decrease in PM2.5 concentrations in the central and northern areas of Shanxi Province, contrasting with an anticipated increase in other regions. (2) The geographical detector indicated that all drivers had significant influences on PM2.5 concentrations, with meteorological factors exerting the greatest effects then followed by human activity and vegetation cover showing the least effects. (3) Both gross domestic product and population density exhibited positive correlations with PM2.5 concentration, while vegetation fractional cover, wind speed, precipitation, and elevation exerted negative influences on PM2.5 concentration all over the space. This study enriched the research content and ideas on the driving mechanism of PM2.5 and provided a reference for similar studies.

High-Throughput Designed and Laser-Etched NiFeCrVTi High-Entropy Alloys with High Catalytic Activities and Corrosion Resistance for Hydrogen Evolution in Seawater

Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution from seawater through wind or solar energy is a cost-effective way to produce green hydrogen fuel. However, the lack of highly active and anti-corrosive electrocatalysts in seawater severely hinders the industrial application. Herein, a novel Ni1.1FeCr0.4V0.3Ti0.3 high-entropy alloy (HEA) is designed through high throughput computing and prepared via powder metallurgy with the surface treated by laser etching under different laser power. The laser-etched NiFeCrVTi high-entropy alloys exhibit a unique periodically ordered structure with multiple active centers and high porosity. The Ni-HEA-30 displays remarkable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance with an overpotential of 55.9 mV and a Tafel slope of 47.3 mV dec-1 in seawater. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are applied to identify the real active sites for HER on the HEA surface as the key factor for both proton and intermediate transformation, which also reveals that the Cr atom promotes the adsorption energy of water molecules, and the modulation of the electronic structure plays a crucial role in optimizing the hydrogen binding capabilities of the Ni atoms within the alloy. Additionally, the electrocatalyst displays high corrosion resistance in seawater, contributing to the good durability for hydrogen production. This work uncovers a new paradigm to develop novel electrocatalysts with superior reaction activity in seawater.

Heavy Metals Content and Health Risk Assessment in Airborne Particulate from the Calabria Region, Southern Italy

This study is focused on the determination of the heavy metals content in airborne particulate matter (PM) with a diameter lower than 10 µm (PM10) deposited on quartz microfiber filters and collected in four representative selected sites of the Calabria region, southern Italy. In particular, data on the content of Cd, Ni, and Pb in PM10 (i.e., those metals whose limit values, in terms of concentration, are reported in the Italian Legislation) were obtained through inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) measurements after acid extraction with microwaves and filtration. Results showed that the average concentration of investigated metals decreases as Ni > Pb > Cd for all analyzed samples, and concentration values are lower than the limit values reported in the Italian legislation in all cases. Moreover, in order to assess the health risk related to their presence in the environment, the potential non-carcinogenic hazard for the investigated heavy metals was evaluated by calculating the hazard index (HI) for children and adults. Results indicated that the calculated HI values were lower than the safety limit in all cases, thus indicating a negligible non-carcinogenic health risk. In addition, the potential carcinogenic hazard for the investigated metals was estimated through the total cancer risk index (Risktotal). Obtained results were also lower than the limit value for children and adults in this case, and, therefore, the carcinogenic health risk caused by heavy metals in the analyzed PM10 samples could be considered to be unremarkable.

Effects of weather and air pollution on outpatient visits for insect-and-mite-caused dermatitis: an empirical and predictive analysis

BACKGROUND

Dermatitis caused by insects and mites, diagnosed as papular urticaria or scabies, is a common skin disease. However, there is still a lack of studies about the effects of weather and air pollution on outpatient visits for this disease. This study aims to explore the impacts of meteorological and environmental factors on daily visits of dermatitis outpatients.

METHODS

Analyses are conducted on a total of 43,101 outpatient visiting records during the years 2015-2020 from the largest dermatology specialist hospital in Guangzhou, China. Hierarchical cluster models based on Pearson correlation between risk factors are utilized to select regression variables. Linear regression models are fitted to identify the statistically significant associations between the risk factors and daily visits, taking into account the short-term effects of temperatures. Permutation importance is adopted to evaluate the predictive ability of these factors.

RESULTS

Short-term temperatures have positive associations with daily visits and exhibit strong predictive abilities. In terms of total outpatients, the one-day lagged temperature not only has a significant impact on daily visits, but also has the highest median value of permutation importance. This conclusion is robust across most subgroups except for subgroups of summer and scabies, wherein the three-day lagged temperature has a negative effect. By contrast, air pollution has insignificant associations with daily visits and exhibits weak predictive abilities. Moreover, weekdays, holidays and trends have significant impacts on daily visits, but with weak predictive abilities.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study suggests that short-term temperatures have positive associations with daily visits and exhibit strong predictive abilities. Nevertheless, air pollution has insignificant associations with daily visits and exhibits weak predictive abilities. The results of this study provide a reference for local authorities to formulate intervention measures and establish an environment-based disease early warning system.

Investigating the temporal dynamics of sub-micron particles and particle-bound transition metals in indoor air of a metropolitan city

The present study portrays an association between particle-bound transition metals and children's health. The indoor air quality of the urban metropolitan city households was monitored for four PM sizes, namely PM1.0-2.5, PM0.50-1.0, PM0.25-0.50 and PM<0.25, in major seasons observed in the city; summer and winter. Further transition/heavy metals, viz. Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn, were analysed in PM1-2.5 samples. In order to evaluate the effect, health risk assessment was performed using mathematical and computational model for assessing dermal exposure and dose estimation (multiple path particle dosimetry model version3.0). The study principally targeted the children aged 2-15 years for the health risk assessment. According to the results, for the largest particle size i.e. PM1.0-2.5 the highest deposition was in the head region (49.1%) followed by pulmonary (43.6%) and tracheobronchial region (7.2%), whereas, for the smallest particle size i.e. PM<0.25 the highest deposition was obtained in the pulmonary region (73.0%) followed by the head (13.6%) and TB region (13.2%). Also, the most imperilled group of children with highest dose accumulation was found to be children aged 8-9 years for all particle sizes. Moreover, the dermal exposure dose as evaluated was found to be preeminent for Ni, Zn and Pb. Besides, seasonal variation gesticulated towards elevated concentrations in winter relative to the summer season. Altogether, the study will provide a conception to the researchers in the fields mounting season-specific guidelines and mitigation approaches. Conclusively, the study commends future work focussing on defining the effects of other chemical components on particles and associated transition metal composition along with proper extenuation of the same.

Assessment of variability in PM2.5 and its impact on human health in a West African country

PM2.5 has become a global challenge threatening human health, climate, and the environment. PM2.5 is ranked as the most common cause of premature mortality and morbidity. Therefore, the current study endeavors to probe the spatiodynamic characteristics of PM2.5 in the Republic of Niger and its impacts on human health from 1998 to 2019. Based on remotely sensed satellite datasets, the study found that the concentration of PM2.5 continued to rise in Niger from 68.85 μg/m3 in 1998 to 70.47 μg/m3 in 2019. During the study period, the annual average PM2.5 concentration is far above the WHO guidelines and the interim target-1 (35 μg/m3). The overall annual growth rate of PM2.5 concentration in Niger is 0.02 μg/m3/year. The health risk (HR) due to PM2.5 exposure is also escalated in Niger, particularly, in Southern Niger. The extent of the extremely high-risk areas corresponding to 1 × 104-9.4 × 105 μg.persons/m3 is increased from 0.9% (2000) to 2.8% (2019). Niamey, southern Dakoro, Mayahi, Tessaoua, Mirriah, Magaria, Matameye, Aguié, Madarounfa, Groumdji, Madaoua, Bouza, Keita, eastern Tahoua, eastern Illéla, Bkomnni, southern Dogon-Doutchi, Gaya, eastern Boboye, central Kollo, and western Tillabéry are experienced high HR due to long-term exposure to PM2.5. These findings indicate that PM2.5 causes a serious health risk across Niger. There is an immediate need to carry out its regional control. Therefore, policymakers and the Nigerien government should make conscious efforts to identify the priority target areas with radically innovative appropriate mitigation interventions.

Chemical characteristics and spatiotemporal variation of marine fine particles for clustered channels of air masses transporting toward remote background sites in East Asia

This study investigated the chemical characteristics, spatiotemporal distribution, and source apportionment of marine fine particles (PM_2.5) for clustered transport channels/routes of air masses moving toward three remote sites in East Asia. Six transport routes in three channels were clustered based on backward trajectory simulation (BTS) in the order of: West Channel > East Channel > South Channel. Air masses transported toward Dongsha Island (DS) came mainly from the West Channel, while those transported toward Green Island (GR) and Kenting Peninsula (KT) came mostly from the East Channel. High PM_2.5 commonly occurred from late fall to early spring during the periods of Asian Northeastern Monsoons (ANMs). Marine PM_2.5 was dominated by water-soluble ions (WSIs) which were predominated by secondary inorganic aerosols (SIAs). Although the metallic content of PM_2.5 was predominated by crustal elements (Ca, K, Mg, Fe, and Al), enrichment factor clearly showed that trace metals (Ti, Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, and Zn) came mainly from anthropogenic sources. Organic carbon (OC) was superior to elemental carbon (EC), while OC/EC and SOC/OC ratios in winter and spring were higher than those in other two seasons. Similar trends were observed for levoglucosan and organic acids. The mass ratio of malonic acid and succinic acid (M/S) was commonly higher than unity, showing the influences of biomass burning (BB) and secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) on marine PM_2.5. We resolved that the main sources of PM_2.5 were sea salts, fugitive dust, boiler combustion, and SIAs. Boiler combustion and fishing boat emissions at DS had higher contribution than those at GR and KT. The highest/lowest contribution ratios of cross-boundary transport (CBT) were 84.9/29.6% in winter and summer, respectively.

Overview of PM2.5 and health outcomes: Focusing on components, sources, and pollutant mixture co-exposure

PM_2.5 varies in source and composition over time and space as a complicated mixture. Consequently, the health effects caused by PM_2.5 varies significantly over time and generally exhibit significant regional variations. According to numerous studies, a notable relationship exists between PM_2.5 and the occurrence of many diseases, such as respiratory, cardiovascular, and nervous system diseases, as well as cancer. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of the effect of PM_2.5 on human health is critical. The toxic effects of various PM_2.5 components, as well as the overall toxicity of PM_2.5 are discussed in this review to provide a foundation for precise PM_2.5 emission control. Furthermore, this review summarizes the synergistic effect of PM_2.5 and other pollutants, which can be used to draft effective policies.

Cell Death Pathways: The Variable Mechanisms Underlying Fine Particulate Matter-Induced Cytotoxicity

Recently, the advent of health risks due to the cytotoxicity of fine particulate matter (FPM) is concerning. Numerous studies have reported abundant data elucidating the FPM-induced cell death pathways. However, several challenges and knowledge gaps are still confronted nowadays. On one hand, the undefined components of FPM (such as heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and pathogens) are all responsible for detrimental effects, thus rendering it difficult to delineate the specific roles of these copollutants. On the other hand, owing to the crosstalk and interplay among different cell death signaling pathways, precisely determining the threats and risks posed by FPM is difficult. Herein, we recapitulate the current knowledge gaps present in the recent studies regarding FPM-induced cell death, and propose future research directions for policy-making to prevent FPM-induced diseases and improve knowledge concerning the adverse outcome pathways and public health risks of FPM.

LCZ method is more effective than traditional LUCC method in interpreting the relationship between urban landscape and atmospheric particles

Landscape classification methods significantly impact the exploration of the mechanism of the relationship between landscapes and atmospheric particulate matter. This study compared the local climate zones (LCZs) and traditional land use/cover change (LUCC) landscape classification methods in explaining spatial differences in concentrations of atmospheric particulate matter (PM_2.5 and PM₁₀) and explored the mechanisms involved in how landscape elements affect atmospheric particulate matter. This was done by establishing a PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ land use regression (LUR) model of LCZ and LUCC landscapes under low, typical, and high particle concentration gradients in urban and suburban areas. The results show that under an LCZ classification system, the number of patches in the urban area of Shanghai was 548 times higher than that of a LUCC system. Moreover, LCZs were successfully established for LUR models in 12 scenarios, while only five models were established for LUCC, all of which were suburban models. The R² of the LUR model based on the LCZ landscape and atmospheric particulate matter was mostly higher than that of the LUCC. For unnatural landscapes, the LUCC demonstrated that an urbanized environment positively affects the concentration of atmospheric particles. However, the LCZ analysis found that areas with high-density buildings have a positive effect on atmospheric particles, while most areas with low-density buildings significantly reduced the number of atmospheric particles present. Generally, compared with the traditional LUCC landscape classification method, LCZ integrates Shanghai's physical structure and classifies the urban landscape more accurately, which is closely related to the urban atmospheric particulate matter, especially in the urban area. Because the low-density building area has the same effect on the particulate matter as the natural landscape, the use of low-density buildings is recommended when planning new towns.

PM2.5 induce myocardial injury in hyperlipidemic mice through ROS-pyroptosis signaling pathway

Exposure to particulate matters with diameters below 2.5 µm (PM_2.5) is considered a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). The closest associations between PM_2.5 and CVDs have been observed in hyperbetalipoproteinemia cases, although the detailed underpinning mechanism remains undefined. In this work, hyperlipidemic mice and H9C2 cells were used to examine the effects of PM_2.5 on myocardial injury and their underlying mechanisms. The results revealed that PM_2.5 exposure caused severe myocardial damage in the high-fat mouse model. Oxidative stress and pyroptosis were also observed along with myocardial injury. After inhibiting pyroptosis with disulfiram (DSF), the level of pyroptosis was effectively reduced as well as myocardial injury, suggesting that PM_2.5 induced the pyroptosis pathway and further caused myocardial injury and cell death. Afterwards, by suppressing PM_2.5-induced oxidative stress with N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), myocardial injury was markedly ameliorated, and the upregulation of pyroptosis markers was reversed, which indicated that PM_2.5-pyroptosis was also improved. Taken together, this study revealed that PM_2.5 induce myocardial injury through the ROS-pyroptosis signaling pathway in hyperlipidemia mice models, providing a potential approach for clinical interventions.

Abnormal ambient temperature change increases the risk of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest: A systematic review and meta-analysis of exposure types, risk, and vulnerable populations

BACKGROUND

There is growing evidence in support of a short-term association between ambient temperature and cardiac arrest attacks that is a serious manifestation of cardiovascular disease and has a high incidence and low survival rate. However, it remains unrecognized about the hazardous temperature exposure types, exposure risk magnitude, and vulnerable populations.

OBJECTIVES

We comprehensively summarize prior epidemiological studies looking at the short-term associations of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) with various temperature exposures among different populations.

METHODS

We searched PubMed and Web of Science databases from inception to October 2021 for eligible English language. Temperature exposure was categorized into three types: heat (included high temperature, extreme heat, and heatwave), cold (included low temperature and extreme cold), and temperature variation (included diurnal temperature range and temperature change between two adjacent days). Meta-analysis weighted by inverse variance was used to pool effect estimates.

RESULTS

This study included 15 studies from 8 countries, totaling around 1 million OHCA events. Extreme heat and extreme cold were significantly associated with an increased risk of OHCA, and the pooled relative risks (RRs) were 1.071 [95 % confidence interval (CI): 1.019-1.126] and 1.662 (95%CI: 1.138-2.427), respectively. The risk of OHCA was also elevated by heatwaves (RR = 1.248, 95%CI: 1.091-1.427) and more intensive heatwaves had a greater effect. Notably, the elderly and males seemed to be more vulnerable to the effects of heat and cold. However, we did not observe a significant association between temperature variation and the risk of OHCA (1.005, 95%CI: 0.999-1.012).

CONCLUSION

Short-term exposure to heat and cold may be novel risk factors for OHCA. Considering available studies in limited regions, the temperature effect on OHCA should be urgently confirmed in different regions.

Impact of Air Pollution and COVID-19 Infection on Periprocedural Death in Patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome

Air pollution and COVID-19 infection affect the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease. The impact of these factors on the course of ACS treatment is not well defined. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of air pollution, COVID-19 infection, and selected clinical factors on the occurrence of perioperative death in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) by developing a neural network model. This retrospective study included 53,076 patients with ACS from the ORPKI registry (National Registry of Invasive Cardiology Procedures) including 2395 COVID-19 (+) patients and 34,547 COVID-19 (-) patients. The neural network model developed included 57 variables, had high performance in predicting perioperative patient death, and had an error risk of 0.03%. Based on the analysis of the effect of permutation on the variable, the variables with the greatest impact on the prediction of perioperative death were identified to be vascular access, critical stenosis of the left main coronary artery (LMCA) or left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD). Air pollutants and COVID-19 had weaker effects on end-point prediction. The neural network model developed has high performance in predicting the occurrence of perioperative death. Although COVID-19 and air pollutants affect the prediction of perioperative death, the key predictors remain vascular access and critical LMCA or LAD stenosis.

Spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of PM2.5 concentration in China from 2000 to 2018 and its impact on population

PM2.5 is an important indicator reflecting changes in air quality. In recent years, affected by climate change and human activities, the problem of environmental pollution has become more and more prominent. In this study, the PM2.5 data from 2000 to 2018 obtained by satellite remote sensing inversion algorithm were selected to analyze the temporal and spatial distribution of PM2.5 in China. The results show that the areas with higher PM2.5 concentrations were mainly in the North China, the Sichuan Basin, and the Tarim Basin. The areas with a significant increase in PM2.5 were mainly in the Northeast China, while the areas with a significant decrease were mainly in the Sichuan Basin and southeastern Gansu. The change of PM2.5 in southern China was not significantly correlated with the change of population and economy, while PM2.5 in Northeast China increases with the increase of population and economy. In 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015, the proportion of the population polluted by PM2.5 was 8.65%, 7.2%, 22.99%, and 9.75%, respectively. The year with the highest percentage (37.63%) of population when air quality reached EXCELLENT was 2015. When the PM2.5 spatial cluster number was six, it can better reflect the PM2.5 spatial distribution state. The places with large changes in PM2.5 spatial clustering were mainly in the Northeast China, Sichuan Basin, and Tarim Basin, which were also areas with large changes in PM2.5. This study provides an important reference for atmospheric environmental monitoring and protection.

The threshold and spatial effects of PM2.5 pollution on resident health: evidence from China

Health capital investment is an integral aspect of human capital investment, and it is vitally important to improve residents' health by encouraging them to maintain insurance. This paper estimates the potential impact of particulate pollution (PM2.5) on health insurance buyers at the city level. Using PM2.5 as a representative air pollution indicator, we construct a threshold panel model and a spatial econometric model based on 2000-2019 panel data from 256 Chinese cities and the health production function to examine the impact mechanism through which PM2.5 pollution causes changes in the number of health insurance buyers. The results indicate that higher PM2.5 pollution significantly increases health insurance buyers in China. Considering the threshold effect, per capita GDP has a nonlinear relationship with an increasing marginal effect on the higher number of health insurance buyers. Due to spatial spillover effects, PM2.5 pollution has an additional impact on the number of health insurance buyers, indicating that a lack of awareness of the spatial correlation will result in underestimating the impact of PM2.5 pollution on residents' health. The robustness of adjacency and geographic distance matrices demonstrates that the regression results are robust and reliable. The findings of this study provide a practical reference for health insurers' development and policymakers' pollution control efforts.

Hexavalent Chromium Causes Apoptosis and Autophagy by Inducing Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Oxidative Stress in Broiler Cardiomyocytes

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is a common environmental pollutant, which has a strong toxic effect on humans and animals. However, the cardiac toxicity of Cr(VI) in broilers remains to be explored. The development of heart disease is often linked to mitochondrial dysfunction especially exposure to toxic substances. In order to investigate the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in apoptosis and autophagy of broiler cardiomyocytes induced by hexavalent chromium, broiler cardiomyocytes were cultured in potassium dichromate of 0 mM, 16 mM, and 32 mM medium for 24 h. The results showed that, compared with the control group, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and apoptosis rate in the Cr(VI) treatment group increased in a dose-dependent manner, the mRNA levels of apoptosis-related genes Bax and p53 were significantly increased, and the mRNA level of Bcl-2 was significantly decreased. Compared with the control group, the mRNA level of autophagy-related genes (LC3-I, LC3-II, and Beclin1) in the Cr(VI) treatment group was significantly increased, the mRNA level of mTOR was significantly decreased, and the protein level of p62/SQSTM1 was significantly decreased. The protein level of Beclin1 and the ratio of LC3-II/LC3-I significantly increased. In addition, compared with the control group, mitochondrial membrane potential decreased in a dose-dependent manner, and mitochondrial dynamics-related genes SIRT1, SIRT3, and Mfn2 mRNA decreased significantly in the Cr(VI) treatment group. In this study, we concluded that Cr(VI) could cause broiler myocardial apoptosis and autophagy by inducing mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress.

Cloud-Based Decision Support System for Air Quality Management

Air quality is important for the protection of human health, the environment and our cultural heritage and it is an issue that will acquire increased significance in the future due to the adverse effects of climate change. Thus, it is important to not simply monitor air quality, but to make information immediately available to those responsible for monitoring the networks, to policy/decision makers, but also to the general population. Moreover, the development of information technologies over the last couple of decades has allowed the proliferation of real-time pollution monitoring. The work presented herein concerns the development of an effective way of monitoring environmental parameters using dedicated software. It offers a complete suite of applications that support environmental data collection management and reporting for air quality and associated meteorology. It combines modern technologies for the proper monitoring of air quality networks, which can consist of one or more measuring stations. Innovatively, it also focuses on how to effectively present the relevant information, utilizing modern technologies, such as cloud and mobile applications, to network engineers, policy/decision managers, and to the general public at large. It also has the capability of notifying appropriate personnel in the event of failures, overruns or abnormal values. The system, in its current configuration, handles information from six networks that include over 55 air pollution monitoring stations that are located throughout Greece. This practical application has shown that the system can achieve high data availability rates, even higher than 99% during the year.
