Fe-based metal organic framework derivative with enhanced Lewis acidity and hierarchical pores for excellent adsorption of oxygenated volatile organic compounds

Derivatives of Br-doped metal-organic framework for improved acetaldehyde adsorption-photocatalytic oxidation

Different Br-doped metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derived (Brx@UiO-66) have been prepared by heat treatment using UiO-66 as the precursor. The experimental results showed that Br0.2@UiO-66 exhibited the best photocatalytic oxidation and adsorption performances toward acetaldehyde. In the dynamic system, the acetaldehyde removal rate and adsorption capacity of Br0.2@UiO-66 were 93.2 % and 230.59 mg/g, respectively. The improvement of the photocatalytic performance can be attributed to the presence of Br ions and CBr bonds, which facilitated the rapid separation of electrons and holes and the production of •O2-. In addition, Br0.2@UiO-66 had a better adsorption performance than 300UiO-66, mainly because of the increased Lewis acidity of the metal active sites due to Br doping. Radical capture experiments indicated that •O2- and e- were the primary active substances in acetaldehyde oxidation, and allowed establishing the possible mechanism of acetaldehyde oxidation. This work shows that MOFs can have high catalytic oxidation performances toward volatile organic compounds (VOCs) while retaining their adsorption capacity, and can be used for practical applications in the adsorption-catalytic integrated degradation of VOCs.

Investigation of Earth-Abundant Metal Salts for the Inhibition of Asphalt-Derived Volatile Organic Compounds

Asphalt is used globally in construction for roads, pavements, and buildings; however, as a fossil-derived material, it is known to generate volatile organic compounds (VOCs) upon exposure to heat and light that can be harmful to human health. Several heterogeneous strategies have been reported for the inhibition of these VOCs; however, the direct use of inexpensive, accessible Earth-Abundant metals has not been extensively explored. In this study, simple metal salts are examined for their coordination capability toward asphalt-derived VOCs. From UV-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopic studies, FeCl3 emerged relative to other metal salts (metal = Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) as a promising candidate for the adsorption and retention of Lewis basic compounds. Coordination of an example oxygen-containing VOC, benzofuran (Bf), to Fe yielded a paramagnetic semi-octahedral complex Fe(Bf)3Cl3. Evaluation by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) coupled to infrared spectroscopy (IR) demonstrated that the complex was stable up to 360 °C. Spectroscopic evaluation demonstrated the stability of the complex upon visible light irradiation and in the presence of a variety of organic pollutants. The potential application of Fe was demonstrated by subjecting biochar to FeCl3 followed by the addition of Bf. It was discovered that this Fe-rich biochar was successful at adsorbing Bf suggesting the possibility of introducing Fe to biochar late-stage in processing to deter asphalt degradation and VOC emissions. An understanding of the binding and stability of Fe salts to VOCs provides insight into how a sustainable infrastructure can be achieved.

Management of typical VOCs in air with adsorbents: status and challenges

The serious harm of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to the ecological environment and human health has attracted widespread attention worldwide. With economic growth and accelerated industrialization, the anthropogenic emissions of VOCs have continued to increase. The most crucial aspect is to choose the appropriate adsorbent, which is very important for the VOCs removal. The search for environmentally friendly VOCs treatment technologies is urgent. The adsorption method is one of the most promising VOCs emission reduction technologies with the advantages of high cost-effectiveness, simple operation, and low energy consumption. One of the most critical aspects is the selection of the appropriate adsorbent, which is very important for the removal of VOCs. This work provides an overview of the sources and hazards of VOCs, focusing on recent research advances in VOCs adsorption materials and the key factors controlling the VOCs adsorption process. A summary of the key challenges and opportunities for each adsorbent is also provided. The adsorption capacity for VOCs is enhanced by an abundant specific surface area; the most efficient adsorption process is achieved when the pore size is slightly larger than the molecular diameter of VOCs; the increase in the number of chemical functional groups contributes to the increase in adsorption capacity. In addition, methods of activation and surface modification to improve the adsorption capacity for VOCs are discussed to guide the design of more advanced adsorbents.

Fabrication and optimization of paper chips from calcinated Fe-MOFs for rapid and in situ visual detection of tetracyclines in water environments

Antibiotics such as tetracyclines (TCs) have become a major threat to ecosystem safety and human health, as their abuse has caused the occurrence and proliferation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and genes. Currently, there is still a lack of convenient in situ methods for the detection and monitoring of TC pollution in actual water systems. This research reports a paper chip based on the complexation of iron-based metal organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) and TCs for rapid and in situ visual detection of representative oxytetracycline (OTC) pollution in water environments. The optimized complexation sample NH₂-MIL-101(Fe)- 350 obtained by calcination at 350 °C exhibited the highest catalytic activity and was then used for paper chip fabrication by printing and surface modification. Notably, the paper chip demonstrated a detection limit as low as 17.11 nmol L^-1 and good practicability in reclaimed water, aquaculture wastewater, and surface water systems, with OTC recovery rates of 90.6-111.4%. More importantly, the presence of dissolved oxygen (9.13-12.7 mg L^-1), chemical oxygen demand (0.52-12.1 mg L^-1), humic acid (< 10 mg L^-1), Ca²⁺, Cl^-, and HPO₄^2- (< 0.5 mol L^-1) had negligible interference on the detection of TCs by the paper chip. Therefore, this work has developed a promising method for rapid and in situ visual monitoring of TC pollution in actual water environments.

Core-shell Au@MIL-100 (Fe) as an enhanced substrate for flunixin meglumine ultra-sensitive detection

This study aimed to develop and validate a simple and efficient surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) method to determine flunixin meglumine (FM) residues in animal tissues through using core-shell Au@MIL-100 (Fe) as enhanced substrate. Au@MIL-100 (Fe) composite material was synthesized by coating metal-organic framework materials (MOFs) on the surface of gold nanoparticles using the solvothermal method. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-vis spectrum, SERS spectrum, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Infrared spectrum (FT-IR), and EDX elemental mapping results revealed that the structural composition of the compound has good properties with localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties, high adsorption capacity, excellent SERS sensitivity and stability. When it was used as SERS substrate, the results of quantitative analysis of FM in pork showed a linear range of 0.10-50 mg·L^-1 with a correlation coefficient (R²) of 0.9819, the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.15 mg·g^-1, the recovery rate of 88.94%∼104.77%, the intra- and inter- batch relative standard deviation (RSD) of 3.57%∼14.22% and 0.18%∼3.44% respectively. Further verification results of the existing standard methods showed no significant difference between the SERS and UV methods (P < 0.05), as well as demonstrating that the SERS method has optimal precision, accuracy, and practicality. These results exposed that Au@MIL-100 (Fe) as a SERS substrate has great potential in rapid and on-site detection analysis.

Green synthesis of a hydrophobic metal-organic gel for the capture of trace odorous hexanal from humid air

The development of superhydrophobic adsorbents for the capture of trace volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from humid indoor air is still a challenge. Herein, we reported the formation of a granular zinc-based metal-organic gel, i.e., ZIF-412(gel) by optimizing the synthesis conditions. The thermally stable xerogel exhibited high surface area (1008 m²/g), hydrophobicity, and viscosity for self-depositing on the substrate such as non-woven fibers. Dynamic adsorption experiments under various humidity conditions demonstrated as-synthesized ZIF-412(gel) owned excellent VOC (hexanal) adsorption performance with adsorption capacity higher than commercial activated carbon and some water-stable MOFs including ZIF-8, ZIF-67, MIL-101(Cr) and ZIF-414. ZIF-412(gel) could be regenerated at temperature as low as 358 K without obvious loss in adsorption capacity. The adsorption mechanism of hexanal over ZIF-412(gel) is also simulated by Grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC).

Volatile organic compounds in water matrices: Recent progress, challenges, and perspective

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a group of organic compounds that have a molecular structure containing carbon and their chemical properties allow them to be easily converted to steam and gas and remain for a long period of time and have diverse effects on the environment. The purpose of this study is determination of the concentration of VOCs such as alachlor, anthracene, benzene, bromoform, chloroform, heptachlor, isophorone, tetrachloroethylene, γ -chlordane, toluene, etc. in water matrices. The results showed that among studies conducted on VOCs, the concentration of tetrachloroethylene, m,p-xylene, and toluene were at the top in water matrices, and the lowest average concentrations were found in chloroform, anthracene, and butyl benzyl phthalate. In terms of VOC concentrations in water matrices, China was the most polluted country. Moreover, the data analysis indicated that China was the only country with carcinogenic risk. A Monte-Carlo simulation showed that although the averages obtained were comparable to the acceptable limits, for heptachlor, the maximum carcinogenic risk is achieved at a level that is slightly over the limit, only 25% from the population being exposed.

Metal-organic frameworks with peroxidase-like activity for efficient removal of aflatoxin B1

Aflatoxin B₁ (AFB₁), a naturally produced toxin existing in major food crops, is highly toxic and carcinogenic to human and animals. In this study, a reusable material, Pd@PCN-222 with great adsorption performance and peroxidase-like activity was synthesized for the removal of AFB₁. Pd@PCN-222 exhibited great adsorption performance owing to hierarchical porous structure. Pd@PCN-222 also could catalyze the AFB₁ in the presence of H₂O₂ due to the Fe-tetrakis (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin and Pd as effective peroxidase active site, which improved the removal efficiency of AFB₁. Pd@PCN-222 was applied for the removal of AFB₁ with a removal rate of 96.52% in 2 h. Owing to the advantages of high removal efficiency and reusability, Pd@PCN-222 had great application potential in AFB₁ removal.

Adsorptive removal of some Cl-VOC's as dangerous environmental pollutants using feather-like γ-Al2O3 derived from aluminium waste with life cycle analysis

Herein, we designed a cost-effective preparation method of nanocomposite γ-Al₂O₃ derived from Al-waste. The produced material has a feather-like morphology, and its adsorption of some chlorinated volatile organic compounds (Cl-VOC's) such as benzyl chloride, chloroform and carbon tetrachloride (C₇H₇Cl, CHCl₃ and CCl₄) was investigated due to their potential carcinogenic effect on humans. It showed a characteristic efficiency towards the adsorptive removal of these compounds over a long period, i.e., eight continuous weeks, at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure. After 8-weeks, the adsorbed amounts of these compounds were determined as: 325.3 mg C₇H₇Cl, 247.6 mg CHCl₃ and 253.3 mg CCl₄ per g of γ-Al₂O_3, respectively. CCl₄ was also found to be dissociatively adsorbed on the surface of γ-Al₂O₃, whereas CHCl₃ and C₇H₇Cl were found to be associatively adsorbed. The prepared γ-Al₂O₃ has a relatively high surface area (i.e., 192.2 m². g^-1) and mesoporosity with different pore diameters in the range of 25-47 Å. Furthermore, environmental impacts of the nanocomposite γ-Al₂O₃ preparation were evaluated using life cycle assessment. For prepartion of adsorbent utilising 1 kg of scrap aluminium wire, it was observed that potential energy demand was 288 MJ, climate change potential was 19 kg CO₂ equivalent, acidification potential was 0.115 kg SO₂ equivalent and eutrophication potential was 0.018 kg PO₄^3- equivalent.

Enhanced adsorption of rhodamine B from water by Fe-N co-modified biochar: Preparation, performance, mechanism and reusability

To adsorb rhodamine B (RhB) in wastewater by pristine biochar was limited, while the modified biochar has shown great potential adsorption performance. Here, coconut shell mixed with FeSO₄·7H₂O and urea was prepared to synthesize Fe-N co-modified biochar by once pyrolysis method at 500℃. The results showed Fe-N-BC had larger surface area (972.8714 m²·g^-1), higher developed porous structure (0.65016 cm³·g^-1), and more oxygen-containing groups, which collectively contributed to significantly improve the adsorption performance of the Fe-N-BC towards RhB. The maximum adsorption capacity of RhB reached 12.41 mg·g^-1 by Fe-N-BC which was 1.58, 1.43 and 1.26 folds than that of BC, N-BC and Fe-BC, respectively. The mechanism of adsorption for Fe-N-BC towards RhB including ion exchange, pore filling, surface complexation, H-bond and π-π interaction. This study indicates that Fe-N-BC is an excellent adsorbent for RhB removal from wastewater.
