Application of disk tube reverse osmosis in wastewater treatment: A review

Effective adsorption of cadmium and nickel ions in mono and bicomponent systems using eco-friendly adsorbents prepared from peanut shells

The work investigates the potential of peanut shells, an abundant agro-industrial waste, to serve as an adsorbent precursor for the effective and simple treatment of effluents loaded with cadmium and nickel ions. Among the adsorbents prepared, carbonized peanut shell (CCarb), due to its higher adsorption capacity, proved to be the most effective compared to carbonized and activated peanut shell (CATQ). The carbonization process led to structural changes, which resulted in an increase in surface area (around 6 times more in CATQ) and pore volume (around 3 times more in CATQ). Even so, the amount of H+ acid sites due to acid activation produced unfavorable effects for adsorption. Hydroxyl, carboxyl and carbonyl groups were identified on the adsorbent surface which presented favorable charges for metal adsorption. This improvement propels the carbonized variant to the forefront, demonstrating the highest adsorption capacity and reaching equilibrium in less than 90 and 60 min for cadmium and nickel ions, respectively. In both monocomponent and bicomponent systems concentrations greater than 40 ppm signify an increase in adsorption capacity for Ni2+. The experimental data best fit the Freundlich model, showing maximum adsorption capacities of 17.04 mg g-1 for cadmium and 31.28 mg g-1 for nickel. Despite the antagonistic effect observed in the bicomponent system, this study concludes by underlining the promise of activated carbon from peanut shells to harmonize technical and environmental concerns.

Electrochemical oxidation of reverse osmosis concentrate using a pilot-scale reactive electrochemical membrane filtration system: Performance and mechanisms

Scale-up treatment of real wastewater holds the key to promoting the practical application of electrochemical filtration technology. This work used a pilot-scale Ti/Pd reactive electrochemical membrane (REM) system (12 REM modules with a total REM area of 0.144 m2) to treat high-salinity reverse osmosis concentrate (ROC) from a chemical industry park. The pilot-scale Ti/Pd REM system demonstrated effective electrochemical degradation of ROC wastewater, achieving removal efficiencies of 82.3 ± 1.9% for COD and 46.7 ± 5.6% for TN at a membrane flux of 90 L/(m2·h) and a cell voltage of 5 V, with an energy consumption of 0.045 kWh/g-COD. Singlet oxygen (1O2) and reactive chlorine species were identified as the two primary reactive oxygen species generated in the Ti/Pd REM system. Fluorescence spectroscopy and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) analysis indicated that the pilot-scale Ti/Pd REM treatment effectively oxidized humic acid-like substance and unsaturated aromatic compounds. Overall, the Ti/Pd REM technology shows a promising application potential for the treatment of high-salinity ROC from the chemical industry.

Evaluation of Different Reverse Osmosis Membranes for Textile Dyeing and Finishing Wastewater Reuse

Different commercial reverse osmosis (RO) membranes from Vontron and DuPont Filmtec were evaluated for textile dyeing and finishing wastewater (TDFW) reuse in China. All six tested RO membranes produced qualified permeate meeting TDFW reuse standards at a water recovery ratio (WRR) of 70% in single batch tests. The rapid decline of apparent specific flux at WRR over 50% was mainly ascribed to feed osmotic pressure increase caused by concentrating effects. Multiple batch tests using Vontron HOR and DuPont Filmtec BW RO membranes with comparable permeability and selectivity demonstrated the reproducibility and showed low fouling development. The occurrence of carbonate scaling on both RO membranes was identified by scanning electron microscopy and energy disperse spectroscopy. No obvious organic fouling was detected on both RO membranes by attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectrometry. From the orthogonal tests, with an integrated RO membrane performance index (i.e., 25% rejection ratio of total organic carbon + 25% rejection ratio of conductivity + 50% flux ratio of final to initial) as a target, the optimal parameters were determined as WRR of 60%, cross-flow velocity (CFV) of 1.0 m/s, temperature (T) of 20 °C for both RO membranes, while trans-membrane pressures (TMP) of 2 and 4 MPa were optimal for Vontron HOR RO membrane and DuPont Filmtec BW RO membrane, respectively. Both RO membranes with the optimal parameters produced good permeate quality for TDFW reuse and kept a high flux ratio of final to initial, demonstrating the effectiveness of the orthogonal tests.

Performance of Hypersaline Brine Desalination Using Spiral Wound Membrane: A Parametric Study

Desalination of hypersaline brine is known as one of the methods to cope with the rising global concern on brine disposal in high-salinity water treatment. However, the main problem of hypersaline brine desalination is the high energy usage resulting from the high operating pressure. In this work, we carried out a parametric analysis on a spiral wound membrane (SWM) module to predict the performance of hypersaline brine desalination, in terms of mass transfer and specific energy consumption (SEC). Our analysis shows that at a low inlet pressure of 65 bar, a significantly higher SEC is observed for high feed concentration of brine water compared with seawater (i.e., 0.08 vs. 0.035) due to the very low process recovery ratio (i.e., 1%). Hence, an inlet pressure of at least 75 bar is recommended to minimise energy consumption. A higher feed velocity is also preferred due to its larger productivity when compared with a slightly higher energy requirement. This study found that the SEC reduction is greatly affected by the pressure recovery and the pump efficiencies for brine desalination using SWM, and employing them with high efficiencies (η_R ≥ 95% and η_pump ≥ 50%) can reduce SEC by at least 33% while showing a comparable SEC with SWRO desalination (<5.5 kWh/m³).

Multiscale Analysis of Permeable and Impermeable Wall Models for Seawater Reverse Osmosis Desalination

In recent years, high permeability membranes (HPMs) have attracted wide attention in seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination. However, the limitation of hydrodynamics and mass transfer characteristics for conventional spiral wound modules defeats the advantage of HPMs. Feed spacer design is one of the effective ways to improve module performance by enhancing permeation flux and mitigating membrane fouling. Herein, we propose a multiscale modeling framework that integrates a three-dimensional multi-physics model with a permeable wall and an impermeable wall, respectively, at a sub-millimeter scale and a system-level model at a meter scale. Using the proposed solution framework, a thorough quantitative analysis at different scales is conducted and it indicates that the average errors of the friction coefficient and the Sherwood number using the impermeable wall model are less than 2% and 9%, respectively, for commercial SWRO membrane (water permeability 1 L m−2 h−1 bar−1) and HPMs (3 L m−2 h−1 bar−1, 5 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 and 10 L m−2 h−1 bar−1) systems, compared to the predictions using the permeable wall model. Using both the permeable and impermeable wall models, the system-level simulations, e.g., specific energy consumption, average permeation flux, and the maximum concentration polarization factor at the system inlet are basically the same (error < 2%), while the impermeable wall model has a significant advantage in computational efficiency. The multiscale framework coupling the impermeable wall model can be used to guide the efficient and accurate optimal spacer design and system design for HPMs using, e.g., a machine learning approach.

Mapping the research on desulfurization wastewater: Insights from a bibliometric review (1991-2021)

Desulfurization wastewater in coal-fired power plants (CFPPs) is a great environmental challenge. This study aimed at the current status and future research trends of desulfurization wastewater by bibliometric analysis. The desulfurization wastewater featured with high sulfate (8000 mg/L), chlorite (8505 mg/L), magnesium (2882 mg/L) and calcium (969 mg/L) but low sodium (801.82 mg/L), and the concentrations of the main contaminants were critically summarized. There was an increasing trend in the annual publications of desulfurization wastewater in the period from 1991 to 2021, with an average growth rate of 15%. Water Science and Technology, Desalination and Water Treatment, Energy & Fuels, Chemosphere, and Journal of Hazardous Materials are the top 5 journals in this field. China was the most productive country (58.3% of global output) and the core country in the international cooperation network. Wordcloud analysis and keyword topic trend demonstrated that removal/treatment of pollutants dominated the global research in the field of desulfurization wastewater. The primary technologies for desulfurization wastewater treatment were systematically evaluated. The physicochemical treatment technologies occupied half of the total treatment methods, while membrane-based integrated processes showed potential applications for beneficial reuse. The challenges and outlook on desulfurization wastewater treatment for achieving zero liquid discharge are summarized.

Solvent-Free Synthesis of Magnetic Sewage Sludge-Derived Biochar for Heavy Metal Removal from Wastewater

The commonly used two-step and one-pot synthesis methods for producing biochar require the use of iron salt solutions, resulting in the undesirable consequences of energy consumption for dewatering and potential pollution risks. To address this drawback, a magnetic sewage sludge-derived biochar (MSBC-2) was synthesized by a solvent-free method in this study. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model provided the best fit to the experimental data, implying a monolayered chemisorption process of Pb2+, Cd2+and Cu2+ onto MSBC-2. As the reaction temperature increased from 25 °C to 45 °C, the maximum adsorption capacities increased from 113.64 mg·g−1 to 151.52 mg·g−1 for Pb2+, from 101.01 mg·g−1 to 109.89 mg·g−1 for Cd2+ and from 57.80 mg·g−1 to 74.07 mg·g−1 for Cu2+, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters (ΔG0 < 0, ΔS0 > 0, ΔH0 > 0) revealed that the adsorption processes of all three metals by MSBC-2 were favourable, spontaneous and endothermic. Surface complexation, cation-π interaction, ion exchange and electrostatic attraction mechanisms were involved in the adsorption of Pb2+, Cd2+ and Cu2+ onto MSBC-2. Overall, this study will provide a new perspective for the synthesis of magnetic biochar and MSBC-2 shows great potential as an adsorbent for heavy metal removal.

Sustainability assessment of wastewater reuse in a Portuguese military airbase

The current water-scarcity crisis that is being felt in Europe, namely in the southern region, has leveraged the development and implementation of national and regional water management plans. These policies aim to promote efficient wastewater reuse in industrial and urban sectors. Thus, stakeholders are now seeking strategies to enhance the sustainability of their wastewater treatment processes. The present work details the evaluation of the wastewater treatment methods used at an Air Force Base located in Portugal. In addition, this study also intended to determine how wastewater reuse can be implemented and add value to the environmental protection mission of the military airbase. Hence, an assessment of wastewater treatment practices was carried out, considering primary and secondary treatments. The chemical, physical, and biological indicators of samples collected over two consecutive years were analyzed to determine trends and fluctuations. The results revealed that the overall effectiveness of nutrient removal is low due to the oversized nature of the treatment plant, the age of the facility, and the composition of the wastewater. The effluent produced meets standards for non-potable reuse and could be used on base for aircraft maintenance and the cleaning of facilities. Nonetheless, the effectiveness of the plant could be improved by implementing a more advanced tertiary wastewater treatment to decrease the concentration of undesired compounds (e.g., total nitrogen), enabling the reuse of water in a broader range of activities.

Membrane technology for pesticide removal from aquatic environment: Status quo and way forward

The noxious side effects of pesticides on human health and environment have prompted the search of effective and reliable treatment techniques for pesticide removal. The removal of pesticides can be accomplished through physical, chemical and biologicals. Physical approaches such as filtration and adsorption are prevailing pesticide removal strategies on account of their effectiveness and ease of operation. Membrane-based filtration technology has been recognized as a promising water and wastewater treatment approach that can be used for a wide range of organic micropollutants including pesticides. Nanofiltration (NF), reverse osmosis (RO) and forward osmosis (FO) have been increasingly explored for pesticide removal from aquatic environment owing to their versatility and high treatment efficiencies. This review looks into the remedial strategies of pesticides from aqueous environment using membrane-based processes. The potentials and applications of three prevailing membrane processes, namely NF, RO and FO for the treatment of pesticide-containing wastewater are discussed in terms of the development of advanced membranes, separation mechanisms and system design. The challenges in regards to the practical implementation of membrane-based processes for pesticide remediation are identified. The corresponding research directions and way forward are highlighted. An in depth understanding of the pesticide nature, water chemistry and the pesticide-membrane interactions is the key to achieving high pesticide removal efficiency. The integration of membrane technology and conventional removal technologies represents a new dimension and the future direction for the treatment of wastewater containing recalcitrant pesticides.

Comparison of disinfection-residual-bacteria (DRB) after seven different kinds of disinfection: Biofilm formation, membrane fouling and mechanisms

Membrane fouling is the Achilles' heel of the reverse osmosis (RO) system for high-quality reclaimed water production. Previous studies have found that after the significant selection effect of traditional disinfection, the remaining disinfection-residual bacteria (DRB) may possess more severe biofouling potentials. To provide more constructive advice for the prevention of biofouling, we compared the RO membrane fouling characteristics of DRB after using five commonly used disinfection methods (NaClO, NH₂Cl, ClO₂, UV, and O₃) and two novel disinfection methods (K₂FeO₄ and the flow-through electrode system (FES)). Compared with the control group (undisinfected, 21.1 % flux drop), the UV-DRB biofilm aggravated biofouling of the RO membrane (23.4 % flux drop), while the FES, K₂FeO₄, and NH₂Cl treatments showed less severe biofouling, with final flux drops of 6.9 %, 8.1 %, and 8.1 %, respectively. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) was found to be a capable indicator for predicting the biofouling potential of DRB. Systematic analysis showed that the thickness and density of the DRB biofilms were most closely related to the different fouling degree of RO membranes. Moreover, the relative abundance of bacteria with higher extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) secretion levels, such as Pseudomonas and Sphingomonas, was found closely related with the biofouling degree of RO membranes.

Cake Layer Fouling Potential Characterization for Wastewater Reverse Osmosis via Gradient Filtration

It is of great importance to quantitatively characterize feed fouling potential for the effective and efficient prevention and control of reverse osmosis membrane fouling. A gradient filtration method with microfiltration (MF 0.45 μm) → ultrafiltration (UF 100 kDa) → nanofiltration (NF 300 Da) was proposed to extract the cake layer fouling index, I, of different feed foulants in this study. MF, UF, and NF showed high rejection of model suspended solids (kaolin), colloids (sodium alginate and bovine serum albumin), and dissolved organic matters (humic acid) during constant-pressure individual filtration tests, where the cake layer was the dominant fouling mechanism, with I showing a good linear positive correlation with the foulant concentration. MF → UF → NF gradient filtration tests of synthetic wastewater (i.e., model mixture) showed that combined models were more effective than single models to analyze membrane fouling mechanisms. For each membrane of gradient filtration, I showed a positive correlation with the targeted foulant concentration. Therefore, a quantitative assessment method based on MF → UF → NF gradient filtration, the correlation of combined fouling models, and the calculation of I would be useful for characterizing the fouling potentials of different foulants. This method was further successfully applied for characterizing the fouling potential of real wastewater (i.e., sludge supernatant from a membrane bioreactor treating dyeing and finishing wastewater).

The noteworthy chloride ions in reclaimed water: Harmful effects, concentration levels and control strategies

Chloride ions (Cl^-), which are omnipresent in reclaimed water, can cause various problems in water reuse systems, especially during water transmission and at end use sites. Although reverse osmosis (RO) is considered as an effective technology to reduce chloride, its high investment and complex maintenance requirements hinder its application in many water reclamation plants (WRPs). Recently, several technologies bringing new options to better deal with chloride have gained increased attention. This review provides detailed information on the harmful effects, concentration levels, and sources of chloride in reclaimed water and summarizes and discusses various chloride removal technologies, including non-selective methods (e.g., membrane filtration, adsorption and ion exchange, oxidation, and electrochemical methods) and selective methods (e.g. precipitation and specially designed electrochemical methods). Among these, Friedel's salt precipitation and capacitive deionization showed attractive development potential. This review also proposes a holistic framework for chloride control from aspects of "Fit-for-Purpose" planning, technical system development, and whole process optimization, which could facilitate the planning and operation of long-term sustainable water reuse practices.

Effect and mechanisms of synthesis conditions on the cadmium adsorption capacity of modified fly ash

In this study, modified coal fly ash (NMFA) was prepared by sodium hydroxide (NaOH) with low-temperature hydrothermal method. The differences of the ash to alkali mass ratio (5:3, 5:4, 5:5, 5:6), calcination temperature (100 ℃, 200 ℃, 300 ℃), and calcination time (1 h, 3 h, 5 h) were investigated. The adsorption experiments obtained the optimal result with the ash to base ratio of 5:5, calcination temperature of 200 ℃, and calcination time of 3 h, adsorbing 90.27 mg/g of Cd²⁺. The characterization results (SEM-EDS, FTIR, XRD, and XPS) also confirmed the effective adsorption of Cd²⁺ by NMFA. The functional groups of Si-O, Al-O, and Fe-O played an important role in Cd²⁺ removal. Meanwhile, the influences of dosage, different pH, and co-existing cations were also investigated. Quasi-secondary adsorption kinetics and Langmuir isotherm model were also referred to the Cd²⁺ adsorption by NMFA. Therefore, the good adsorption of NMFA-3 on Cd²⁺ provided new ideas for the safe utilization of fly ash and heavy metal purification in wastewater.
