Abstract
The rapid temperature changes caused by global warming significantly challenge fish survival by affecting various biological processes. Fish generally mitigate stress through physiological plasticity, but when temperature changes exceed their tolerance limits, even adaptable species like Siluriformes can experience internal disruptions. This study investigates the effects of extreme thermal climate on Hong Kong catfish (Clarias fuscus), native to tropical and subtropical regions. C. fuscus were exposed to normal temperature (NT, 26 ℃) or high temperature (HT, 34 ℃) condition for 90 days. Subsequently, histological, biochemical, and transcriptomic changes in gill tissue were observed after exposure to acute high temperatures (34 ℃) and subsequent temperature recovery (26 ℃). Histological analysis revealed that C. fuscus in the HT group exhibited less impact from sudden temperature shifts compared to the NT group, as they adapted by reducing the interlamellar cell mass (ILCM) and lamellae thickness (LT) of gill tissue, thereby mitigating the aftermath of acute heat shock. Biochemical analysis showed that catalase (CAT) activity in the high temperature group continued to increase, while malondialdehyde (MDA) levels decreased, suggesting establishment of a new oxidative balance and enhanced environmental adaptability. Transcriptome analysis identified 520 and 463 differentially expressed genes in the NT and HT groups, respectively, in response to acute temperature changes. Enrichment analysis highlighted that in response to acute temperature changes, the NT group inhibited apoptosis and ferroptosis by regulating the activity of alox12, gclc, and hmox1a, thereby attenuating the adverse effects of heat stress. Conversely, the HT group increased the activity of pfkma and pkma to provide sufficient energy for tissue repair. The higher degree of heat shock protein (Hsp) response in NT group also indicated more severe heat stress injury. These findings demonstrate alterations in gill tissue structure, regulation of oxidative balance, and the response of immune metabolic pathways to acute temperature fluctuations in C. fuscus following thermal exposure, suggesting potential avenues for further exploration into the thermal tolerance plasticity of fish adapting to global warming.

Abstract
An 8-week feeding trial was performed to investigate the effects of dietary bile acids on growth, glucose metabolism, and intestinal health in spotted seabass (Lateolabrax maculatus) reared at high temperatures (33 °C). The fish (20.09 ± 1.12 g) were fed diets supplemented with bile acids: 0 (Con), 400 (BA400), 800 (BA800), and 1200 (BA1200) mg/kg, respectively. The results showed that the growth was promoted in fish at the BA800 treatment compared with the control (p < 0.05). Increased enzyme activities and transcripts of gluconeogenesis in the liver were observed, whereas decreased enzyme activities and transcripts of glycolysis, as well as glycogen content, were shown in the BA800 treatment (p < 0.05). The transcripts of bile acid receptors fxr in the liver were up-regulated in the BA800 treatment (p < 0.05). A bile acid supplementation of 800 mg/kg improved the morphological structure in the intestine. Meanwhile, intestinal antioxidant physiology and activities of lipase and trypsin were enhanced in the BA800 treatment. The transcripts of genes and immunofluorescence intensity related to pro-inflammation cytokines (il-1β, il-8, and tnf-α) were inhibited, while those of genes related to anti-inflammation (il-10 and tgf-β) were induced in the BA800 treatment. Furthermore, transcripts of genes related to the NF-κB pathway in the intestine (nfκb, ikkα, ikkβ, and ikbα1) were down-regulated in the BA800 treatment. This study demonstrates that a dietary bile acid supplementation of 800 mg/kg could promote growth, improve glucose metabolism in the liver, and enhance intestinal health by increasing digestive enzyme activity and antioxidant capacity and inhibiting inflammatory response in L. maculatus.

Abstract
Chronic heat stress can have detrimental effects on the survival of fish. This study aimed to investigate the impact of prolonged high temperatures on the growth, antioxidant capacity, apoptosis, and transcriptome analysis of Hong Kong catfish (Clarias fuscus). By analyzing the morphological statistics of C. fuscus subjected to chronic high-temperature stress for 30, 60, and 90 days, it was observed that the growth of C. fuscus was inhibited compared to the control group. The experimental group showed a significant decrease in body weight and body length compared to the control group after 60 and 90 days of high-temperature stress (p < 0.05, p < 0.01). A biochemical analysis revealed significant alterations in the activities of three antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase activity (SOD); catalase activity (CAT); glutathione peroxidase activity (GPx), the malondialdehyde content (MDA), and the concentrations of serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP); Aspartate aminotransferase (AST); and alanine transaminase (ALT) in the liver. TUNEL staining indicated stronger apoptotic signals in the high-temperature-stress group compared to the control group, suggesting that chronic high-temperature-induced oxidative stress, leading to liver tissue injury and apoptosis. Transcriptome analysis identified a total of 1330 DEGs, with 835 genes being upregulated and 495 genes being downregulated compared to the control group. These genes may be associated with oxidative stress, apoptosis, and immune response. The findings elucidate the growth changes in C. fuscus under chronic high temperature and provide insights into the underlying response mechanisms to a high-temperature environment.

Abstract
Regulatory variants in gene expression serve as bridges linking genetic variation and phenotypic plasticity. Environmental conditions typically influence the effects of regulatory variants on phenotypic plasticity; however, such genotype-by-environment interactions (G × E) are poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the genetic basis of G × E in estuarine oyster (Crassostrea ariakensis), which is an important model animal for studying environmental adaption owing to its high plasticity and large intraspecific divergence. Genome-wide mapping of expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs) for 23 environmental adaptive genes was performed for 256 estuarine oysters. We identified 1194 eQTL single nucleotide polymorphisms (eSNPs), including 433 cis-eSNPs in four genes and 722 trans-eSNPs in eight genes. The expression variation explanation of cis-eSNPs (9.95%) was significantly higher than that of trans-eSNPs (9.15%). We specifically showed cis- and trans-eSNPs with high linkage disequilibrium (LD) for Traf7, Slc6a5, Ggt, and Dap3. For example, we identified a cis-regulatory LD block containing 68 cis-eSNP and a trans-regulatory LD block, including 20 trans-eSNPs in Traf7. A high proportion (85%) of 40 vital eSNPs exhibited significant G × E effects. We identified crossing and nonparallel interactions of G × E, with the tag cis-eSNPs of Baat and Slc6a5 as representatives. Our results indicated that cis-eQTLs are highly conserved. This study provides insights into the understanding of adaptive evolutionary mechanisms and phenotypic response prediction to variable environments, as well as the genetic improvement for superior adaptive traits for genetic resource conservation and aquaculture.

Abstract
This study investigated the potential mechanism of action of tea polyphenols (TPs), one of the major active ingredients in tea, to enhance heat resistance in Drosophila and the attenuating effect of heat treatment of TPs on their efficacy. The results showed that TPs were able to prolong the average survival time of Drosophila under high-temperature stress (p < 0.05), but the effect of TPs in prolonging the survival time of Drosophila melanogaster was significantly reduced (p < 0.05) with increasing TP heat-treatment time until it disappeared. The composition of TPs changed after heat treatment. It was also shown that the weakening of the effect of TPs in improving the heat tolerance of Drosophila was related to the decrease in the content of catechins and phenolic acids in their fractions as well as with the increase in the content of laccase. Transcriptomic analysis showed that the effect of TPs on heat tolerance in Drosophila melanogaster was closely related to the longevity regulation pathway, the neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction signaling pathway, and the drug metabolism-cytochrome P450 pathway. Metabolomics analysis showed that the effect of TP intervention in improving the body's heat tolerance was mainly related to amino acid metabolism and energy metabolism. However, thermal processing weakened the relevance of these transcriptomes and metabolomes. The present study reveals the mechanism of action by which heat-treated TPs affect the body's heat tolerance, which is important for the development and utilization of the heat-protection function of tea.

Abstract
Teleost fish have evolved various adaptations that allow them to tolerate cold water conditions. However, the underlying mechanism of this adaptation is poorly understood in Tibetan Plateau fish. RNA-seq combined with liquid chromatography‒mass spectrometry (LC‒MS/MS) metabolomics was used to investigate the physiological responses of a Tibetan Plateau-specific teleost, Gymnocypris przewalskii, under cold conditions. The 8-month G. przewalskii juvenile fish were exposed to cold (4 ℃, cold acclimation, CA) and warm (17 ℃, normal temperature, NT) temperature water for 15 days. Then, the transcript profiles of eight tissues, including the brain, gill, heart, intestine, hepatopancreas, kidney, muscle, and skin, were evaluated by transcriptome sequencing. The metabolites of the intestine, hepatopancreas, and muscle were identified by LC‒MS/MS. A total of 5,745 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were obtained in the CA group. The key DEGs were annotated using Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis. The DEGs from the eight tissues were significantly enriched in spliceosome pathways, indicating that activated alternative splicing is a critical biological process that occurs in the tissues to help fish cope with cold stress. Additionally, 82, 97, and 66 differentially expressed metabolites were identified in the intestine, hepatopancreas, and muscle, respectively. Glutathione metabolism was the only overlapping significant pathway between the transcriptome and metabolome analyses in these three tissues, indicating that an activated antioxidative process was triggered during cold stress. In combination with the multitissue transcriptome and metabolome, we established a physiology-gene‒metabolite interaction network related to energy metabolism during cold stress and found that gluconeogenesis and long-chain fatty acid metabolism played critical roles in glucose homeostasis and energy supply.

Abstract
The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is undergoing a wet-warming transition, which could affect the survival of the native fish. However, the tolerance and physiological response to thermal stress is rarely studied in Gymnocypris przewalskii, a rare native fish in the Tibetan plateau. In this study, first, we detected the thermal tolerance of five groups of six-month G. przewalskii which acclimated at 8, 12, 16, 20, and 24 °C for two weeks, respectively, by critical thermal methodology. Then, through heat challenge, we detected the metabolites, key enzyme activities, and gene expressions involved in metabolism and antioxidant in the hepatopancreas when the temperatures increased from 16 °C to 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, and 28 °C for 12 h, respectively. The results showed that although the fish are sensitive to high temperatures, the quick acclimation at mild high temperatures could significantly improve the tolerance to acute high-temperature stress in juvenile G. przewalskii. During the heat challenge study, blood glucose significantly increased at heat stress (P < 0.05). At the same time, total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), and free fatty acid (FFA) significantly decreased when the temperature rose continuously to 20 °C. Metabolic enzyme activities of carnitine palmityl transferase I (CPT-Ⅰ), acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), and fatty acid synthase (FAS) significantly decreased at 20 °C (P < 0.05). Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) significantly increased at 20 °C (P < 0.05). The relative transcript levels of genes involved in antioxidant and glycolysis/gluconeogenesis were markedly higher than the control at 20-26 °C (P < 0.05). The genes involved in fatty acid biosynthesis or metabolism showed different expression patterns under heat stress. Heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) and Hsp90 were significantly higher than the control at 18 °C and 26 °C, respectively. These results confirmed the prediction that G. przewalskii is sensitive to high temperatures, so conservation efforts should pay more attention to the warming damage.

Abstract
Trachinotus ovatus is a major economically important cultured marine fish in the South China Sea. However, extreme weather and increased culture density result in uncontrollable problems, such as increases in water temperature and a decline in dissolved oxygen (DO), hindering the high-quality development of aquaculture. In this study, liver transcriptional profiles of T. ovatus were investigated under acute high-temperature stress (31 °C and 34 °C) and normal water temperature (27 °C) using RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) technology. Differential expression analysis and STEM analysis showed that 1347 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and four significant profiles (profiles 0, 3, 4, and 7) were screened, respectively. Of these DEGs, some genes involved in heat shock protein (HSPs), hypoxic adaptation, and glycolysis were up-regulated, while some genes involved in the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) and fatty acid metabolism were down-regulated. Our results suggest that protein dynamic balance and function, hypoxia adaptation, and energy metabolism transformation are crucial in response to acute high-temperature stress. Our findings contribute to understanding the molecular response mechanism of T. ovatus under acute heat stress, which may provide some reference for studying the molecular mechanisms of other fish in response to heat stress.

Abstract
Intestinal microorganisms that living in the mucosa and contents of the gastrointestinal tract of animals, have close links with their hosts over a long evolutionary history. The community structure of the fish intestinal microbiota is associated with food, living environment, and the growth stage. To screen for potential probiotics that can be used for regulating breeding behaviors, this study focused on the diversity of fish intestinal microorganisms. This study aimed to investigate the effects of sex and body weight on the intestinal microbial diversity of Gymnocypris chilianensis in the wild. The results showed that the significant high diversity and richness of intestinal microbiota were fould in heavier individuals, and males. The dominant bacterial phyla of G. chilianensis were Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteroidetes. In addition, the abundance of Firmicutes varied significantly among different body weights. The genus profile revealed that small individuals were dominated by Weissella, while females were dominated by Aeromonas, and both large individuals and males were dominated by other genera. Phylogenetic relationships and UPGMA clustering analysis showed significant differences among the groups. In general, the two main factors that have an effect on the intestinal microbiota diversity of wild G. chilianensis are sex and body weight.

Abstract
In order to provide new insights into the physiological responses of lenok (Brachymystax lenok: Salmonidae) to acute and severe heat stress (25°C, 48 h), dynamic changes in redox state and metabolic responses are studied combined biochemical index and non-targeted metabolome. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) consumption causes significant increases in ratio of reduced NADH to NAD+ and ratio of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) to NADP+, which induced the redox imbalance in heat stressed lenok. Lowered reduced glutathione/oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG) ratios suggested that more oxidized conditions occurred in heat-stressed lenok, leading to membrane lipid oxidation. The first few hours of heat stress promoted the activity of enzymes involved in anaerobic glycolysis (hexokinase, pyruvate kinase, lactic dehydrogenase) and glutamicpyruvic transaminase and glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, which might lead to consumption of many carbohydrates and amino acid catabolism. These enzyme activities decreased with time in a possible compensatory strategy to manage anabolic and catabolic metabolism, maintaining the redox homeostasis. After 48 h of recovery, NAD+, carbohydrate levels and enzyme activities had returned to control levels, whereas many amino acids were consumed for repair and new synthesis. GSH remained at levels lower than controls, and the more oxidized conditions had not recovered, aggravating oxidative damage. Glutamic acid, glutamine, lysine and arginine may play important roles in survival of heat-stressed lenok.

Abstract
Global warming further increases the toxic threat of environmental pollutants on organisms. In order to reveal the dimensions of this threat more clearly, it is of great importance that the studies be carried out with temperature differences as close as possible to the temperature values that will represent the global climate projection. In our study, how the toxicity of glyphosate, which is widely used around the world, on zebrafish changes with temperature increases of 0.5° was investigated on behavioral and molecular basis. For this purpose, adult zebrafish were exposed to glyphosate at concentrations of 1 ppm and 5 ppm for 96 h in four environments with a temperature difference of 0.5° (28.5; 29.0; 29.5; 30.0 °C). At the end of the exposure, half of the zebrafish were sampled and remaining half were left for a 10-day recovery process. At the end of the trials, zebrafish were subjected to circadian rhythm and anxiety tests. In addition, histopathological, immunohistochemical and metabolome analyses were performed on brain tissues. As a result, it has been detected that anxiety and circadian rhythm were disrupted in parallel with the increased temperature and glyphosate concentration, and increased histopathological findings and 5-HT4R and GNAT2 immunopositivity in the brain. As a result of metabolome analysis, more than thirty annotated metabolites have been determined due to the synergistic effect of temperature increase and glyphosate exposure. As a conclusion, it was concluded that even a temperature increase of 0.5° caused an increasing effect of glyphosate toxicity in the zebrafish model.

Abstract
Temperature fluctuations caused by climate change and global warming pose a great threat to various species. Most fish are particularly vulnerable to elevated temperatures. Understanding the mechanism of high-temperature tolerance in fish can be beneficial for proposing effective strategies to help fish cope with global warming. In this study, we systematically studied the effects of high temperature on Acipenser dabryanus, an ancient living fossil and flagship species of the Yangtze River, at the histological, biochemical, transcriptomic and metabolomic levels. Intestinal and liver tissues from the control groups (18 °C) and acute heat stress groups (30 °C) of A. dabryanus were sampled for histological observation and liver tissues were assessed for transcriptomic and metabolomic profiling. Histopathological analysis showed that the intestine and liver tissues were damaged after heat stress. The plasma cortisol content and the levels of oxidative stress markers (catalase/glutathione reductase) and two aminotransferases (aspartate aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase) increased significantly in response to acute heat stress. Transcriptomic and metabolomic methods showed 6707 upregulated and 4189 downregulated genes and 64 upregulated and 78 downregulated metabolites in the heat stress group. Heat shock protein (HSP) genes showed striking changes in expression under heat stress, with 21 genes belonging to the HSP30, HSP40, HSP60, HSP70 and HSP90 families significantly upregulated by short-term heat stress. The majority of genes associated with ubiquitin and various immune-related pathways were also markedly upregulated in the heat stress group. In addition, the combined analysis of metabolites and gene profiles suggested an enhancement of amino acid metabolism and glycometabolism and the suppression of fatty acid metabolism during heat stress, which could be a potential energy conservation strategy for A. dabryanus. To the best of our knowledge, the present study represents the first attempt to reveal the mechanisms of heat stress responses in A. dabryanus, which can provide insights into improved cultivation of fish in response to global warming.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pesticides are extensively applied globally. Pesticide residues induce calamitous effects on the environment and untargeted organisms. Public concerns for the safety of freshwater organisms and the challenges posed by aquatic contaminants remain high. In the present study, the acute toxicity of avermectins (AVMs) to the crayfish, Procambarus clarkii was evaluated. We also evaluated the potential effects of AVM on the biochemical and transcriptomic status of the hepatopancreas and gastrointestinal tract in P. clarkii. RESULTS The 24, 48, 72, 96 h median lethal concentrations (LC50 ) of AVM on crayfish were 2.626, 1.162, 0.723, 0.566 mg L-1 , respectively. The crayfish were then exposed to 0.65 mg L-1 of AVM for 96 h. AVM significantly altered biochemical parameters including AChE and CAT activities in the hepatopancreas, and AChE, SOD and Na + -K + -ATPase activities in the gastrointestinal tract at several time points. Furthermore, transcriptomic analysis identified 953 and 1851 differentially-expressed genes (DEGs) in the hepatopancreas and gastrointestinal tract, respectively. KEGG enrichment showed that the gene expression profiles of the hepatopancreas and gastrointestinal tract were distinct from each other. The DEGs in the hepatopancreas were mostly enriched with stress-response pathways, while the majority of the DEGs in the gastrointestinal tract belonged to metabolism-related pathways. CONCLUSION We demonstrated that the AVM induced acute toxicity, oxidative stress, osmoregulation disturbance, neurotoxicity and transcriptome imbalance in crayfish. These findings unraveled the detrimental effects of AVMs exposure on crayfish. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Change in temperature of aquatic environment have impacts on the physiology of fish, especially in the brain, which is a vital organ and prone to oxidative damage. Astyanax lacustris is a freshwater fish that play an important role in the food market and has been increasingly used in fish farms, besides environmental monitoring studies. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the responses of antioxidant biomarkers and products of the oxidative process in the brains A. lacustris subjected to thermal shock. The specimens were obtained from artificial farming lakes and subjected to shock induced by exposure to high (31 °C ± 0.5) and low (15 °C ± 0.5) temperature for 2, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h; control group were maintained at 23 °C ± 0.5. At 31 °C, glutathione-related enzymes were more responsive, suggested by the change activity of GPx and G6PDH enzymes, in addition to GSH levels. At 15 °C, enzymes of the first line of defense were more active, evidenced by the change CAT activity. No significant changes were detected in the levels of ROS, LPO and PCO. These results indicate that the brains of A. lacustris have an efficient antioxidant defense system with the ability to acclimatize to the temperatures tested.

Abstract
Mobilization and repartition of nutrients and energy are prerequisites for the normal sexual maturity of broodstock. However, there are few studies on the mechanisms of hepatic nutrients and energy metabolism during sexual maturation in female rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). This study investigated hepatic metabolite changes and explored the potential nutritional regulation mechanism between mature and immature female rainbow trout by combining UPLC-QTOF/MS metabolomics and biochemical assays. It was observed that hepatic biochemical assays differed considerably between the two groups, such as glucose, triglycerides, hexokinase, lipase, and aspartate aminotransferase. Liver metabolomics showed that various differential metabolites involved in amino acid and lipid metabolism markedly increased, suggesting the enhancement of lipid metabolism and amino acid anabolism in the liver provides the necessary material basis for ovarian development. Meanwhile, glycogen catabolism and glycolysis hold the key to maintaining organismal energy homeostasis with normal sexual maturation of female rainbow trout. Overall, the results from this study suggested that the liver undergoes drastic reprogramming of the metabolic profile in response to mobilization and repartition of nutrients and energy during the sexual maturation of female rainbow trout. This study further deepened the understanding of the reproductive biology of rainbow trout, and provided the theoretical basis and practical ramifications for nutritional requirements of breeding high-quality broodstock in the artificial propagation of rainbow trout.

Abstract
The present study aimed at assessing the effects of dietary Hyssop, Hyssopus officinalis, extract on rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, responses to thermal stress. The juveniles (69.8 ± 0.38 g) were stocked in 12 through-flow tanks at a density of 12 fish per tank. Methanolic extract of Hyssop (HME) was added to diet at 0, 100, 250, and 500 mg/kg and the fish were fed (3% of biomass) over a 70-d period: 62 d at 13.3 ± 0.08°C and 7 d at 21–22°C. At the end of the trial, the plasma alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxin (T4), cortisol, glucose, lactate, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), ascorbate, and the gill glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), and malondialdehyde (MDA). The results showed that HME had no significant effects on fish growth performance, survival, and feed efficiency. Dietary 250 mg/kg HME significantly decreased plasma ALT activity (P < 0.001), but showed no significant effects on plasma AST) (P = 0.106) activity, T3 (P = 0.992), and T4 (P = 0.070) levels. Thermal stress significantly (P < 0.001) increased plasma ALT and AST activities, but lowered plasma T3 and T4 levels. Dietary HME and thermal stress had interaction effects on plasma cortisol (P < 0.001), glucose (P = 0.007), lactate (P = 0.010), LDH (P = 0.005), TAC (P = 0.038), ascorbate (P < 0.001), and the gill GPx (P = 0.001), GR (P < 0.001), GST (P < 0.001), and MDA (P = 0.001). Thermal stress significantly increased plasma cortisol, glucose, lactate, and LDH, the gill GPX, GR, and GST, but dietary HME supplementation significantly reduced such elevations, particularly at 250 mg/kg level. Dietary HME significantly increased plasma TAC before the thermal stress and mitigated the stress-induced decreased in TAC, particularly at 250 mg/kg level. Dietary HME significantly decreased the gill MDA before and after the thermal stress, and lowest MDA was observed in 250 mg/kg HME level. Based on the present results, 250 mg/kg HME is recommended as suitable dose to improve antioxidative responses and hepatoprotection in rainbow trout under heat stress.

Abstract
Potentially negative effects of thermal variation on physiological functions may be modulated by compensatory responses, but their efficacy depends on the timescale of phenotypic adjustment relative to the rate of temperature change. Increasing temperatures in particular can affect mitochondrial bioenergetics and rates of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Our aim was to test whether different rates of temperature increase impact mitochondrial bioenergetics and modulate oxidative stress. We exposed zebrafish (Danio rerio) to warming from 20 to 28°C over 3, 6, 24, or 48 h, and compared these to a control group that was kept at constant 20°C. Fish exposed to the fastest (3 h) and slowest (48 h) rates of warming had significantly higher rates of H2O2 production relative to the control treatment, and the proportion of O2 converted to H2O2 (H2O2/O2 ratio) was significantly greater in these groups. However, ROS production was not paralleled by differences in mitochondrial substrate oxidation rates, leak respiration rates, or coupling (respiratory control ratios). Increased rates of ROS production did not lead to damage of proteins or membranes, which may be explained by a moderate increase in catalase activity at the fastest, but not the slowest rate of warming. The increase in ROS production at the slowest rate of heating indicates that even seemingly benign environments may be stressful. Understanding how animals respond to different rates of temperature change is important, because the rate determines the time period for phenotypic adjustments and it also alters the environmental thermal signal that triggers compensatory pathways.
