Removal of nitrate from groundwater by nano-scale zero-valent iron injection pulses in continuous-flow packed soil columns

In-situ groundwater remediation of contaminant mixture of As(III), Cr(VI), and sulfanilamide via electrochemical degradation/transformation using pyrite

Electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) are effective in removing persistent contaminants from groundwater. However, their practical applicability depends significantly on various site-specific characteristics. Therefore, the primary objective of this investigation was to study the feasibility of EAOPs and pyrite, which is a sulfide mineral, to effectively remove the mixture of arsenic (As (III)), chromium (Cr (VI)), and sulfanilamide in groundwater. We conducted a comparison of three systems: (1) EAOP alone, (2) pyrite alone, and (3) a combined EAOP and pyrite system. In EAOP alone, sulfanilamide was effectively oxidized (80%), while the electrochemical transformation of As(III)/Cr(VI) into As(V)/Cr(III) was limited. In just the pyrite system, As(III), Cr(VI), and sulfanilamide were adsorbed onto the surface of pyrite (60%, 20%, and 18%). Neither the EAOP nor the pyrite system alone could effectively treat the contaminants mixture. Nonetheless, the combined system completely removed As(III), Cr(VI), and sulfanilamide by the synergistic reaction. This could be attributed to the formation of green rust, a natural adsorbent mineral produced as a reaction of dissolved iron, generated via electrochemical pyrite oxidation, with the groundwater electrolyte (e.g., CO3 or SO4). This system harmonized the combined approach of EAOP and pyrite to effectively eliminate both organic and inorganic contaminants. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: A paper proposed electrochemical oxidation (EO) with pyrite to remove both organic and inorganic contaminants from groundwater. The removal performance of the combined system was evaluated, and the synergistic mechanism was revealed. The combination of EO and pyrite with synergistic removal effectively removed the mixture of both contaminants. This could be attributed by the formation of green-rust by electrochemical activation for pyrite. Compared to the single system of EO and pyrite alone, the combined system with EO and pyrite improved removal performance. Results suggested that the combined system could be used for green groundwater remediation.

Nanoscale zero-valent iron alleviate antibiotic resistance risk during managed aquifer recharge (MAR) by regulating denitrifying bacterial network

The frequent occurrence of antibiotics in reclaimed water is concerning, in the case of managed aquifer recharge (MAR), it inevitably hinders further water purification and accelerates the evolutionary resistance in indigenous bacteria. In this study, we constructed two column reactors and nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) amendment was applied for its effects on water quality variation, microbial community succession, and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) dissemination, deciphered the underlying mechanism of resistance risk reduction. Results showed that nZVI was oxidized to iron oxides in the sediment column, and total effluent iron concentration was within permissible limits. nZVI enhanced NO3--N removal by 15.5% through enriching denitrifying bacteria and genes, whereas made no effects on oxacillin (OXA) removal. In addition, nZVI exhibited a pivotal impact on ARGs and plasmids decreasing. Network analysis elucidated that the diversity and richness of ARG host declined with nZVI amendment. Denitrifying bacteria play a key role in suppressing horizontal gene transfer (HGT). The underlying mechanisms of inhibited HGT included the downregulated SOS response, the inhibited Type-Ⅳ secretion system and the weakened driving force. This study afforded vital insights into ARG spread control, providing a reference for future applications of nZVI in MAR.

Groundwater quality assessment using water quality index and principal component analysis in the Achnera block, Agra district, Uttar Pradesh, Northern India

The qualitative and quantitative assessment of groundwater is one of the important aspects for determining the suitability of potable water. Therefore, the present study has been performed to evaluate the groundwater quality for Achhnera block in the city of Taj, Agra, India, where groundwater is an important water resource. The groundwater samples, 50 in number were collected and analyzed for major ions along with some important trace element. This study has further investigated for the applicability of groundwater quality index (GWQI), and the principal component analysis (PCA) to mark out the major geochemical solutes responsible for origin and release of geochemical solutes into the groundwater. The results confirm that, majority of the collected groundwater samples were alkaline in nature. The variation of concentration of anions in collected groundwater samples were varied in the sequence as, HCO3- > Cl- > SO42- > F- while in contrast the sequence of cations in the groundwater as Na > Ca > Mg > K. The Piper diagram demonstrated the major hydro chemical facies which were found in groundwater (sodium bicarbonate or calcium chloride type). The plot of Schoellar diagram reconfirmed that the major cations were Na+ and Ca2+ ions, while in contrast; major anions were bicarbonates and chloride. The results showed water quality index mostly ranged between 105 and 185, hence, the study area fell in the category of unsuitable for drinking purpose category. The PCA showed pH, Na+, Ca2+, HCO3- and fluoride with strong loading, which pointed out geogenic source of fluoride contamination. Therefore, it was inferred that the groundwater of the contaminated areas must be treated and made potable before consumption. The outcomes of the present study will be helpful for the regulatory boards and policymaker for defining the actual impact and remediation goal.

Isotopic tracing of leachate percolation from municipal solid waste dump sites to groundwater in diverse climatic zones of India

Groundwater resources in tropical regions are largely dependent on recharge by rainwater infiltration through soil layers with variable time. However, the rainwater infiltration through soil is a serious concern in urban tropics where it interacts with landfills at the dumpsites, potentially contaminating adjoining groundwater. In this study, the stable isotopic compositions of oxygen and hydrogen (δ18O and δ2H, respectively) in groundwater and leachates, adjoining municipal dumpsites in urban tropics (Bangalore, Kolkata and Durgapur located in diverse rainfall zonation of India), were analyzed to investigate their recharge sources and trace the possible mixing of leachate contaminants under three diverse climatology. The measured values of δ18O and δ2H suggested that the groundwater in these sites reflects higher recharge by rainwater. However, the d-excess values indicated secondary effects suggesting the groundwater has experienced significant modifications. The end member analysis using δ18O-d-excess relation pinpointed an additional leachate contribution from adjoining dumpsites. The critical fraction of leachate infiltration to groundwater quantified using two component mixing model ranged between (i) 1 and 33% in Bangalore, (ii) 5 and 13% in Kolkata and (iii) 18 and 76% in Durgapur, with its variability dependent on seasonality and aquifer connectivity. This information is crucial for groundwater management to secure water quality and to quantify potential hydrological contaminants particularly in drier seasons and drier regions, when and where the demand for groundwater is high, respectively.

Soil properties determine the impact of nZVI on Lactuca sativa L and its rhizosphere

Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) is a promising material tool for the remediation of metal(loid)-contaminated soils since it reduces metal(loid) availability and plant uptake, thereby enhancing the development of the plants. However, the effects of nZVI as nanoparticles on soil properties, plants, and the microbial rhizosphere in unpolluted soils are poorly understood. Here we tested the impact of nZVI at different doses (0.5 and 5% of commercial suspension) on soil properties, lettuce plants, and their microbial rhizosphere in two non-contaminated soils with distinct physico-chemical properties (alkaline versus acidic soil). To this end, a pot experiment was performed with lettuce plants in a growth chamber for a month. Both soils showed an increase in of pH and available Fe after nZVI application. However, these effects were more marked in the acidic soil. In this regard, the plants in this soil showed increased biomass and Fe content. TEM analysis revealed that although the roots and leaves of plants grown in the alkaline soil showed better cell integrity than those in acidic soil-an observation that was consistent with the visual appearance of the plants-the former were more affected by the nZVI treatment. Regarding the microbial rhizosphere, in general, nZVI enhanced enzyme activity regardless of the soil type. Microbial functional diversity showed a significant decline in response to nZVI in alkaline soil. In contrast, the 0.5% nZVI treatment had a positive effect on this parameter in acidic soil. Bacterial genetic diversity was less affected by the presence of nZVI than fungal diversity, which was higher in nZVI-treated acidic soils. In addition, alterations of bacterial and fungal communities were associated with available Fe in acidic soil. In conclusion, soil properties play a key role in determining the effects of nZVI on lettuce plants and their rhizosphere.

Physicochemical Effects of Sulfur Precursors on Sulfidated Amorphous Zero-Valent Iron and Its Enhanced Mechanisms for Cr(VI) Removal

Amorphous zerovalent iron (AZVI) has gained considerable attention due to its remarkable reactivity, but there is limited research on sulfidated amorphous zerovalent iron (SAZVI) and the influence of different sulfur precursors on its reactivity remains unclear. In this study, SAZVI materials with an amorphous structure were synthesized using various sulfur precursors, resulting in significantly increased specific surface area and hydrophobicity compared to AZVI. The Cr(VI) removal efficiency of SAZVI-Na₂S, which exhibited the most negative free corrosion potential (-0.82 V) and strongest electron transfer ability, was up to 8.5 times higher than that of AZVI. Correlation analysis revealed that the water contact angle (r = 0.87), free corrosion potential (r = -0.92), and surface Fe(II) proportion (r = 0.98) of the SAZVI samples played crucial roles in Cr(VI) removal. Furthermore, the enhanced elimination ability of SAZVI-Na₂S was analyzed, primarily attributed to the adsorption of Cr(VI) by the FeS_x shell, followed by the rapid release of internal electrons to reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III). This process ultimately led to the precipitation of FeCr₂O₄ and Cr₂S₃ on the surface of SAZVI-Na₂S, resulting in their removal from the water. This study provides insights into the influence of sulfur precursors on the reactivity of SAZVI and offers a new strategy for designing highly active AZVI for efficient Cr(VI) removal.

Simultaneous identification of groundwater contaminant source and hydraulic parameters based on multilayer perceptron and flying foxes optimization

Groundwater contaminant source identification (GCSI) has practical significance for groundwater remediation and liability. However, when applying the simulation-optimization method to precisely solve GCSI, the optimization model inevitably encounters the problems of high-dimensional unknown variables to identify, which might increase the nonlinearity. In particular, to solve such optimization models, the well-known heuristic optimization algorithms might fall into a local optimum, resulting in low accuracy of inverse results. For this reason, this paper proposes a novel optimization algorithm, namely, the flying foxes optimization (FFO) to solve the optimization model. We perform simultaneous identification of the release history of groundwater pollution sources and hydraulic conductivity and compare the results with those of the traditional genetic algorithm. In addition, to alleviate the massive computational load caused by the frequent invocation of the simulation model when solving the optimization model, we utilized the multilayer perception (MLP) to establish a surrogate model of the simulation model and compared it with the method of backpropagation algorithm (BP). The results show that the average relative error of the results of FFO is 2.12%, significantly outperforming the genetic algorithm (GA); the surrogate model of MLP can replace the simulation model for calculation with fitting accuracy of more than 0.999, which is better than the commonly used surrogate model of BP.

Source identification and health risks of nitrate contamination in shallow groundwater: a case study in Subei Lake basin

Nitrate pollution of groundwater has become a global concern as it can affect drinking water quality and human health. In this paper, an extensive hydrochemical investigation was performed to assess the spatial distribution, source identification, and health risk of groundwater nitrate pollution in the Subei Lake basin. The prevalent pollutant, nitrate (NO₃^-), was identified based on descriptive statistical method and box plots, and most of the other parameters of groundwater samples met water standards and can be used for drinking purpose. The results showed that nearly 23.53% of groundwater samples displays the NO₃^- concentrations higher than the limit of 50 mg/L recommended by the World Health Organization, and the highest nitrate content (199 mg/L) is mainly distributed around the Mukai Lake. Piper triangle diagram demonstrated that the dominated anions of hydrochemical types exhibit a gradual evolving trend from HCO₃^- to SO₄^2- and Cl^- with increasing nitrate concentration. The correspondence analysis suggested that agricultural activities are identified as the most possible source of nitrate contamination, while the higher content of other parameters in individual groundwater samples may be controlled by natural factors. The impacts of pollutant NO₃^- on human health were quantified using human health risk assessment method, and results showed that the order of non-carcinogenic health risk values through drinking water intake is Infants>Children>Adult males>Adult females, and 65%, 53%, 41%, and 35% of samples exceed the acceptable risk level (hazard quotient=1), respectively. The main findings obtained from this study can provide valuable insight on drinking water safety and groundwater pollution prevention.

Removal of nitrate and pesticides from groundwater by nano zero-valent iron injection pulses under biostimulation and bioaugmentation scenarios in continuous-flow packed soil columns

This study evaluates the NO₃^- removal from groundwater through Heterotrophic Denitrification (HDN) (promoted by the addition of acetate and/or an inoculum rich in denitrifiers) and Abiotic Chemical Nitrate Reduction (ACNR) (promoted by pulse injection of zerovalent iron nanoparticles (nZVI)). HDN and ACNR were applied, separately or combined, in packed soil column experiments to complement the scarce research on pulse-injected nZVI in continuous-flow systems mimicking a Well-based Denitrification Barrier. Together with NO₃^-, the removal of two common pesticides (dieldrin and lindane) was evaluated. Results showed that total NO₃^- removal (>97%) could be achieved by either bioestimulation with acetate (converting NO₃^- to N₂(g) via HDN) or by injecting nZVI (removing NO₃^- via ACNR). In the presence of nZVI, NO₃^- was partially converted to N₂(g) and to a lower extent NO₂^-, with unreacted NO₃^- being likely adsorbed onto Fe-(oxy)hydroxides. Combination of both HDN and ACNR resulted in even a higher NO₃^- removal (>99%). Interestingly, nZVI did not seem to pose any toxic effect on denitrifiers. These results showed that both processes can be alterned or combined to take advantage of the benefits of each individual process while overcoming their disadvantages if applied alone. With regard to the target pesticides, the removal was high for dieldrin (>93%) and moderate for lindane (38%), and it was not due to biodegradation but to adsorption onto soil. When nZVI was applied, the removal increased (generally >91%) due to chemical degradation by nZVI and/or adsorption onto formed Fe-(oxy)hydroxides.

Aquifer heterogeneity controls to quality monitoring network performance for the protection of groundwater production wells

A groundwater monitoring network surrounding a pumping well (such as a public water supply) allows for early contaminant detection and mitigation where possible contaminant source locations are often unknown. This numerical study investigates how the contaminant detection probability of a hypothetical sentinel-well monitoring network consisting of one to four monitoring wells is affected by aquifer spatial heterogeneity and dispersion characteristics, where the contaminant source location is randomized. This is achieved through a stochastic framework using a Monte Carlo approach. A single production well is considered that results in converging non-uniform flow close to the well. Optimal network arrangements are obtained by maximizing a weighted risk function that considers true and false positive detection rates, sampling frequency, early detection, and contaminant travel time uncertainty. Aquifer dispersivity is found to be the dominant parameter for the quantification of network performance. For the range of parameters considered, a single monitoring well screening the full aquifer thickness is expected to correctly and timely identify at least 12% of all incidents resulting in contaminants reaching the production well. This proportion increases to a global maximum of 96% for a network consisting of four wells and very dispersive transport conditions. Irrespective of network size and sampling frequency, more dispersive transport conditions result in higher detection rates. Increasing aquifer heterogeneity and decreasing aquifer spatial continuity also lead to higher detection rates, though these effects are diminished for networks of 3 or more wells. Statistical anisotropy has no effect on the network performance. Earlier detection, which is critical for remedial action and supply safety, comes with a significant cost in terms of detection rate, and should be carefully considered when a monitoring network is being designed.
