Colloidal stability classification of TiO2 nanoparticles in artificial and in natural waters by cluster analysis and a global stability index: Influence of standard and natural colloidal particles

An overview on dispersion procedures and testing methods for the ecotoxicity testing of nanomaterials in the marine environment

Considerable efforts have been devoted to develop or adapt existing guidelines and protocols, to obtain robust and reproducible results from (eco)toxicological assays on engineered nanomaterials (NMs). However, while many studies investigated adverse effects of NMs on freshwater species, less attention was posed to the marine environment, a major sink for these contaminants. This review discusses the procedures used to assess the ecotoxicity of NMs in the marine environment, focusing on the use of protocols and methods for preparing NMs dispersions and on the NMs physicochemical characterization in exposure media. To this purpose, a critical analysis of the literature since 2010 was carried out, based on the publication of the first NMs dispersion protocols. Among the 89 selected studies, only <5 % followed a standardized dispersion protocol combined with NMs characterization in ecotoxicological media, while more than half used a non-standardized dispersion method but performed NMs characterization. In the remaining studies, only partial or no information on dispersion procedures or on physicochemical characterization was provided. This literature review also highlighted that metal oxides NMs were the most studied (42 %), but with an increasing interest in last years towards nanoplastics (14 %) and multicomponent nanomaterials (MCNMs, 7 %), in line with the growing attention on these emerging contaminants. For all these NMs, primary producers as algae and bacteria were the most studied groups of marine species, in addition to mollusca, while organisms at higher trophic levels were less represented, likely due to challenges in evaluating adverse effects on more complex organisms. Thus, despite the wide use of NMs in different applications, standard dispersion protocols are not often used for ecotoxicity testing with marine species. However, the efforts to characterize NMs in ecotoxicological media recognize the importance of following conditions that are as standardized as possible to support the ecological hazard assessment of NMs.

Transport of polystyrene nanoplastics with different functional groups in goethite-coated saturated porous media: Effects of low molecular weight organic acids and physicochemical properties

The influence of low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs) and goethite on the migration of nanoplastics in the soil environment remains poorly understood. To elucidate the mechanism of influence, the study investigated the impact of LMWOAs on the migration ability of functionalized polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs-NH2/COOH) in quartz sand (QS) and goethite (α-FeOOH)-coated quartz sand (FOS). We investigated the effect of changes in iron valence induced by LMWOAs on the migration of PSNPs. The results revealed that the migration ability of polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) declined as the ionic strength (IS) increased and the pH decreased, primarily due to the compression of the double layer and protonation reactions. The migration of PSNPs is facilitated by LMWOAs through distinct mechanisms in the two media. Specifically, LMWOAs were adsorbed on the FOS and QS surfaces through complexation and hydrogen bonding, respectively. At pH 4.0, LMWOAs exhibit redox activity, resulting in the generation of additional Fe(III). This redox process enhances the electrostatic attraction between the media and PSNPs, thereby reducing the competition at specific points and spatial resistance associated with LMWOAs. In contrast to FOS, LMWOAs at pH 4.0 reduced the migration ability of PSNPs in QS, following the trend of MA > TA > CA. This difference was attributed to the pKa of LMWOAs and the weak hydrogen bonding on the QS surface. The relevant mathematical models effectively validate the migration results. The above conclusions suggest that LMWOAs can alter the valence state of iron on the surface of goethite, thereby influencing the migration of plastic particles in environmental media.

Dynamic Light Scattering and Its Application to Control Nanoparticle Aggregation in Colloidal Systems: A Review

Colloidal systems and their control play an essential role in daily human activities, but several drawbacks lead to an avoidance of their extensive application in some more productive areas. Some roadblocks are a lack of knowledge regarding how to influence and address colloidal forces, as well as a lack of practical devices to understand these systems. This review focuses on applying dynamic light scattering (DLS) as a powerful tool for monitoring and characterizing nanoparticle aggregation dynamics. We started by outlining the core ideas behind DLS and how it may be used to examine colloidal particle size distribution and aggregation dynamics; then, in the last section, we included the options to control aggregation in the chemically processed toner. In addition, we pinpointed knowledge gaps and difficulties that obstruct the use of DLS in real-world situations. Although widely used, DLS has limits when dealing with complicated systems, including combinations of nanoparticles, high concentrations, and non-spherical particles. We discussed these issues and offered possible solutions and the incorporation of supplementary characterization approaches. Finally, we emphasized how critical it is to close the gap between fundamental studies of nanoparticle aggregation and their translation into real-world applications, recognizing challenges in colloidal science.

Dissolved Organic Matter and Lignin Modulate Aquatic Toxicity and Oxidative Stress Response Activated by Layered Double Hydroxides Nanomaterials

Advanced nanomaterials can be released into the environment and can coexist with natural organic matter (NOM). However, evidence on the impacts of NOM on the environmental behavior and toxicity of advanced nanomaterials is still scarce. Here, we investigated the behavior and toxic effects of two layered double hydroxides (LDHs) nanomaterials with different metallic constituents (Mg-Al-LDH and Zn-Al-LDH) at relatively low exposure concentrations on a freshwater green alga (Chlorella pyrenoidosa) in the absence and presence of two types of NOM, namely dissolved organic matter (DOM) and dealkaline lignin (DL). The DOM or DL interaction with the LDHs at different mixture levels was shown to be an antagonistic effect on the growth inhibition toxicity to C. pyrenoidosa mainly. The estimation of the index of Integrated Biological Responses version 2 indicated that the joint interaction of the LDHs with DOM or DL occurred in the following order of frequency synergism > antagonism > additivity. Furthermore, the physicochemical characteristics of LDHs were crucial for illuminating the mechanism by which the DOM or DL modified the LDH-induced oxidative stress response. These findings highlighted the important role of NOM in the behavior and effect of LDHs as a representative of a new class of multifunctional nanomaterials in the freshwater environment.

Metabolic alterations in alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii exposed to nTiO2 materials

Nano-sized titanium dioxide (nTiO₂) is one of the most commonly used materials, however the knowledge about the molecular basis for metabolic and physiological changes in phytoplankton is yet to be explored. In the present study we use a combination of targeted metabolomics, transcriptomics and physiological response studies to decipher the metabolic perturbation in green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii exposed for 72 h to increasing concentrations (2, 20, 100 and 200 mg L⁻¹) of nTiO₂ with primary sizes of 5, 15 and 20 nm. Results show that the exposure to all three nTiO₂ materials induced perturbation of the metabolism of amino acids, nucleotides, fatty acids, tricarboxylic acids, antioxidants but not in the photosynthesis. The alterations of the most responsive metabolites were concentration and primary size-dependent despite the significant formation of micrometer-size aggregates and their sedimentation. The metabolic perturbations corroborate the observed physiological responses and transcriptomic results and confirmed the importance of oxidative stress as a major toxicity mechanism for nTiO₂. Transcriptomics revealed also an important influence of nTiO₂ treatments on the transport, adenosine triphosphate binding cassette transporters, and metal transporters, suggesting a perturbation in a global nutrition of the microalgal cell, which was most pronounced for exposure to 5 nm nTiO₂. The present study provides for the first-time evidence for the main metabolic perturbations in green alga C. reinhardtii exposed to nTiO₂ and helps to improve biological understanding of the molecular basis of these perturbations.

Combination of transcriptomics, metabolomics and physiology studies highlighted the nanoparticle size- and concentration-dependent disturbance in algal metabolism induced by nTiO₂.
