Abstract
Selenium (Se) biofortification during the growth process of mung bean is an effective method to improve the Se content and quality. However, the effect of Se biofortification on the physicochemical properties of mung bean protein is unclear. The objective of this study was to clarify the changes in the composition, Se forms, particle structure, functional properties, thermal stability, and gel properties of mung bean protein at four Se application levels. The results showed that the Se content of mung bean protein increased in a dose-dependent manner, with 7.96-fold (P1) and 8.52-fold (P2) enhancement at the highest concentration. Exogenous Se application promotes the conversion of inorganic Se to organic Se. Among them, selenomethionine (SeMet) and methyl selenocysteine (MeSeCys) replaced Met and Cys through the S metabolic pathway and became the dominant organic Se forms in Se-enriched mung bean protein, accounting for more than 80 % of the total Se content. Exogenous Se at 30 g/hm2 significantly up-regulated protein content and promoted the synthesis of sulfur-containing protein components and hydrophobic amino acids in the presence of increased levels of SeMet and MeSeCys. Meanwhile, Cys and Met substitution altered the sulfhydryl groups (SH), β-sheets, and β-turns of protein. The particle size and microstructural characteristics depend on the protein itself and were not affected by exogenous Se. The Se-induced increase in the content of hydrophobic amino acids and β-sheets synergistically increases the thermal stability of the protein. Moderate Se application altered the functional properties of mung bean protein, which was mainly reflected in the significant increase in oil holding capacity (OHC) and foaming capacity (FC). In addition, the increase in SH and β-sheets induced by exogenous Se could alter the protein intermolecular network, contributing to the increase in storage modulus (G') and loss modulus (G″), which resulted in the formation of more highly elastic gels. This study further promotes the application of mung bean protein in the field of food processing and provides a theoretical basis for the extensive development of Se-enriched mung bean protein.

Abstract
Nanoparticle (NP) pollution has negative impacts and is a major global environmental problem. However, the molecular response of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) to titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) is limited. Herein, the dual effects of TiO2 NPs (0-1000 mg L-1) on carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) metabolisms in alfalfa were investigated. The results showed that 500 mg L-1 TiO2 NPs (Ti-500) had the highest phytotoxicity in the C/N metabolizing enzymes; and it significantly increased total soluble sugar, starch, sucrose, and sucrose-phosphate synthase. Furthermore, obvious photosynthesis responses were found in alfalfa exposed to Ti-500. By contrast, 100 mg L-1 TiO2 NPs (Ti-100) enhanced N metabolizing enzymes. RNA-seq analyses showed 4265 and 2121 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in Ti-100 and Ti-500, respectively. A total of 904 and 844 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were identified in Ti-100 and Ti-500, respectively. Through the physiological, transcriptional, and proteomic analyses, the DEGs and DEPs related to C/N metabolism, photosynthesis, chlorophyll synthesis, starch and sucrose metabolism, and C fixation in photosynthetic organisms were observed. Overall, TiO2 NPs at low doses improve photosynthesis and C/N regulation, but high doses can cause toxicity. It is valuable for the safe application of NPs in agriculture.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) plays crucial roles in human, animal, and plant physiology, but its varied plant functions remain complex and not fully understood. While Se deficiency affects over a billion people worldwide, excessive Se levels can be toxic, presenting substantial risks to ecosystem health and public safety. The delicate balance between Se's beneficial and harmful effects necessitates a deeper understanding of its speciation dynamics and how different organisms within ecosystems respond to Se. Since humans primarily consume Se through Se-rich foods, exploring Se's behavior, uptake, and transport within agroecosystems is critical to creating effective management strategies. Traditional physicochemical methods for Se remediation are often expensive and potentially harmful to the environment, pushing the need for more sustainable solutions. In recent years, phytotechnologies have gained traction as a promising approach to Se management by harnessing plants' natural abilities to absorb, accumulate, metabolize, and volatilize Se. These strategies range from boosting Se uptake and tolerance in plants to releasing Se as less toxic volatile compounds or utilizing it as a biofortified supplement, opening up diverse possibilities for managing Se, offering sustainable pathways to improve crop nutritional quality, and protecting human health in different environmental contexts. However, closing the gaps in our understanding of Se dynamics within agricultural systems calls for a united front of interdisciplinary collaboration from biology to environmental science, agriculture, and public health, which has a crucial role to play. Phytotechnologies offer a sustainable bridge between Se deficiency and toxicity, but further research is needed to optimize these methods and explore their potential in various agricultural and environmental settings. By shedding light on Se's multifaceted roles and refining management strategies, this review contributes to developing cost-effective and eco-friendly approaches for Se management in agroecosystems. It aims to lead the way toward a healthier and more sustainable future by balancing the need to address Se deficiency and mitigate the risks of Se toxicity.

Abstract
In this study, the interaction effects of NaAsO2 (1 and 5 μM), SiO2 NPs (10 and 100 mg/L) and CeO2 NPs (10 and 100 mg/L) were assessed in Vigna mungo (Blackgram). The treatment of NaAsO2, SiO2, CeO2-NPs and combinations of NPs & As were applied to blackgram plants under hydroponic conditions. After its application, the morpho-physiological, antioxidant activity, and phytochemical study were evaluated. At 10 and 100 mg/L of SiO2 and CeO2-NPs, there was an increase in antioxidative enzymatic activity (p < 0.05) and reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, substantial ROS accumulation was observed at 1 and 5 μM NaAsO2 and 100 mg/L SiO2 NPs (p < 0.05). Additionally, at such concentrations, there is a substantial reduction in photosynthetic pigments, nitrogen fixation, chlorosis, and plant development when compared to controls (p < 0.05). The combination of SiO2 and CeO2 NPs (10 and 100 mg/L) with NaAsO2 decreased superoxide radical and hydrogen peroxide and improved SOD, CAT, APX, GR, and chlorophyll pigments (p < 0.05). Further FTIR results were evaluated for documenting elemental and phytochemical analysis.

Abstract
Agricultural productivity is constantly being forced to maintain yield stability to feed the enormously growing world population. However, shrinking arable and nutrient-deprived soil and abiotic and biotic stressor (s) in different magnitudes put additional challenges to achieving global food security. Though well-defined, the concept of macro, micronutrients, and beneficial elements is from a plant nutritional perspective. Among various micronutrients, selenium (Se) is essential in small amounts for the life cycle of organisms, including crops. Selenium has the potential to improve soil health, leading to the improvement of productivity and crop quality. However, Se possesses an immense encouraging phenomenon when supplied within the threshold limit, also having wide variations. The supplementation of Se has exhibited promising outcomes in lessening biotic and abiotic stress in various crops. Besides, bulk form, nano-Se, and biogenic-Se also revealed some merits and limitations. Literature suggests that the possibilities of biogenic-Se in stress alleviation and fortifying foods are encouraging. In this article, apart from adopting a combination of a conventional extensive review of the literature and bibliometric analysis, the authors have assessed the journey of Se in the "soil to spoon" perspective in a diverse agroecosystem to highlight the research gap area. There is no doubt that the time has come to seriously consider the tag of beneficial elements associated with Se, especially in the drastic global climate change era.

Abstract
Nanotechnology is rapidly emerging and innovative interdisciplinary field of science. The application of nanomaterials in agricultural biotechnology has been exponentially increased over the years that could be attributed to their uniqueness, versatility, and flexibility. The overuse of nanomaterials makes it crucial to determine their fate and distribution in the in vitro (in cell and tissue cultures) and in vivo (in living species) biological environments by investigating the nano-biointerface. The literature states that the beneficial effects of nanoparticles come along with their adverse effects, subsequently leading to an array of short-term and long-term toxicities. It has been evident that the interplay of nanoparticles with abiotic and biotic communities produces several eco-toxicological effects, and the physiology and biochemistry of crops are greatly influenced by the metabolic alterations taking place at cellular, sub-cellular, and molecular levels. Numerous risk factors affect nanoparticle's accumulation, translocation, and associated cytogenotoxicity. This review article summarizes the contributing factors, possible mechanisms, and risk assessment of hazardous effects of various types of nanoparticles to plant health. The methods for evaluating the plant nanotoxicity parameters have been elaborated. Conclusively, few recommendations are put forward for designing safer, high-quality nanomaterials to protect and maintain environmental safety for smarter agriculture demanded by researchers and industrialists.

Abstract
Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) is an important horticultural crop worldwide. Sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl-) in the surface soil are the major limiting factors in coastal areas of Shandong Province in China. Therefore, to understand the mechanism used by cucumber to adapt to sodium chloride (NaCl), we analyzed the phenotypic and physiological indicators of eighteen cucumber germplasms after three days under 100 and 150 mM NaCl treatment. A cluster analysis revealed that eighteen germplasms could be divided into five groups based on their physiological indicators. The first three groups consisted of seven salt-tolerant and medium salt-tolerant germplasms, including HLT1128h, Zhenni, and MC2065. The two remaining groups consisted of five medium salt-sensitive germplasms, including DM26h and M1-2-h-10, and six salt-sensitive germplasms including M1XT and 228. A principal component analysis revealed that the trend of comprehensive scores was consistent with the segmental cluster analysis and survival rates of cucumber seedlings. Overall, the phenotype, comprehensive survival rate, cluster analysis, and principal component analysis revealed that the salt-tolerant and salt-sensitive germplasms were Zhenni, F11-15, MC2065, M1XT, M1-2-h-10, and DM26h. The results of this study will provide references to identify or screen salt-tolerant cucumber germplasms and lay a foundation for breeding salt-tolerant cucumber varieties.

Abstract
Due to the growing number of the world's population, there is an urgent need for high-quality food to meet global food security. Traditional fertilizers and pesticides face the problems of low utilization efficiency and possible hazards to non-target organisms. Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for animals and humans. As a result, Se nanoparticles (SeNPs) have aroused intense interest and found opportunities in agricultural use. Herein, we summarized representative studies on the potential application of SeNPs in agriculture, including mitigating biotic and abiotic stresses in plants, promoting seed germination and plant growth, and improving Se contents and nutritional values in crops, and the underlying mechanisms were also discussed. Finally, future directions are highlighted to get a deep insight into this field.

Abstract
In this study, soil-grown pakchoi after 2 weeks seedling cultivation were exposed to CeO2 nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs) at 0.7, 7, 70, and 350 mg kg-1 for 30 days. Results showed that chlorophyll content and photosynthetic assimilation rate were decreased significantly under all treatments with the largest decrease of 34.16% (0.7 mg kg-1 CeO2 NPs), however, sub-stomatal CO2 was increased dramatically under low dose of CeO2 NPs (0.7 mg kg-1). There were 4576, 3548, 2787, and 2514 genes up/down regulated significantly by 0.7, 7, 70, and 350 mg kg-1 CeO2 NPs, respectively, and 767 genes affected under all treatments. In addition, 0.7 mg kg-1 CeO2 NPs up-regulated 10 chlorophyll synthesis genes, 20 photosynthesis genes, and 10 carbon fixation enzyme genes; while 350 mg kg-1 CeO2 NPs down-regulated 5 photosynthesis genes and 28 auxin-activated genes. Among the key genes of photosynthesis, Ferredoxin-NADP reductase (PetH) was upregulated in 0.7, 7 and 70 mg kg-1 treatments, while Photosystem II lipoprotein (Psb27) was downregulated under 7, 70 and 350 mg kg-1 treatments. Top 20 metabolic pathways affected by CeO2 NPs including plant hormone, amino acids, and glutathione, and carbon metabolism These results provide information about utilizing CeO2 NPs more safely and effectively in the future.

Abstract
Exposure of crops to CeO2 nanoparticles (nCeO2) in agricultural environments impact crop quality and human health. In this regard, the effects of selenium nanoparticles (nSe) on the yield and quality of Vigna radiata (L.) exposed to nCeO2 were investigated. The experiment was carried out as a factorial with two factors: NPs (nCeO2, and nSe) as factor one and concentrations as factor two [(0, 250, 500 and 1000 mg/L nCeO2; 0, 25, 50 and 75 mg/L nSe)]. Nanoparticles were foliar applied to 45-day old mung bean shoot in two steps and one-week interval. At 250-1000 mg/L, nCeO2 increased P, protein and Ce accumulation in grain. Additionally, at 1000 mg/L, the nCeO2, significantly decreased seed number, yield, Fe, and Zn storage in seeds. Conversely, at 25 and 50 mg/L, nSe stimulated the growth and yield of mung bean, and significantly increased P, Fe, Zn, and Se in seeds, but reduced the protein content in seeds. The Se25+Ce250 and Se50+Ce250 significantly increased pod number, seed number, grain weight, yield, Fe, Zn and Se storage in grains. In contrast, the Ce accumulation in seeds decreased in all combination treatments (nCeO2 + nSe) compared to their respective single nCeO2 treatments. Moreover, in the plants exposed to high nCeO2 concentrations, nSe application resulted in undamaged vacuoles, less starch granules' accumulation, significant yield improvement, and elevated Fe, Se, and Zn in seeds. Data suggest that selenium nanoparticles prevent nCeO2 stress in mung bean and improve grain production and quality.

Abstract
In this study, selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) and cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeONPs) were synthesized by using the extract of Melia azedarach leaves, and Acorus calamusas rhizomes, respectively, and investigated for the biological and sustainable control of yellow, or stripe rust, disease in wheat. The green synthesized NPs were characterized by UV-Visible spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The SeNPs and CeONPs, with different concentrations (i.e., 10, 20, 30, and 40 mg/L), were exogenously applied to wheat infected with Puccinia striformis. SeNPs and CeONPs, at a concentration of 30 mg/L, were found to be the most suitable concentrations, which reduced the disease severity and enhanced the morphological (plant height, root length, shoot length, leaf length, and ear length), physiological (chlorophyll and membrane stability index), biochemical (proline, phenolics and flavonoids) and antioxidant (SOD and POD) parameters. The antioxidant activity of SeNPs and CeONPs was also measured. For this purpose, different concentrations (50, 100, 150, 200 and 400 ppm) of both SeNPs and CeONPs were used. The concentration of 400 ppm most promoted the DPPH, ABTS and reducing power activity of both SeNPs and CeONPs. This study is considered the first biocompatible approach to evaluate the potential of green synthesized SeNPs and CeONPs to improve the health of yellow, or stripe rust, infected wheat plants and to provide an effective management strategy to inhibit the growth of Puccinia striformis.
