Nanoscale zero-valent iron/silver@activated carbon-reduced graphene oxide: Efficient removal of trihalomethanes from drinking water

Synthesis and evaluation of a novel cross-linked biochar/ferric chloride hybrid material for integrated coagulation and adsorption of turbidity and humic acid from synthetic wastewater: Implications for sludge valorisation

The deep removal of organic pollutants is challenging for coagulation technology in drinking water and wastewater treatment plants to satisfy the rising water standards. Iron (III) chloride (FeCl3) is a popular inorganic coagulant; although it has good performance in removing the turbidity (TB) in water at an alkaline medium, it cannot remove dissolved pollutants and natural organic matter such as humic acid water solution. Additionally, its hygroscopic nature complicates determining the optimal dosage for effective coagulation. Biochar (BC), a popular adsorbent with abundant functional groups, porous structure, and relatively high surface area, can adsorb adsorbates from water matrices. Therefore, combining BC with FeCl3 presents a potential solution to address the challenges associated with iron chloride. Consequently, this study focused on preparing and characterizing a novel biochar/ferric chloride-based coagulant (BC-FeCl3) for efficient removal of turbidity (TB) and natural organic matter, specifically humic acid (HA), from synthetic wastewater. The potential solution for the disposal of produced sludge was achieved by its recovering and recycling, then used in adsorption of HA from aqueous solution. The novel coagulant presented high TB and HA removal within 10 min of settling period at pH solution of 7.5. Furthermore, the recovered sludge presented a good performance in the adsorption of HA from aqueous solution. Adsorption isotherm and kinetics studies revealed that the Pseudo-second-order model best described kinetic adsorption, while the Freundlich model dominated the adsorption isotherm.

Recent advances in bimetallic nanoscale zero-valent iron composite for water decontamination: Synthesis, modification and mechanisms

The environmental pollution of water is one of the problems that have plagued human society. The bimetallic nanoscale zero-valent iron (BnZVI) technology has increased wide attention owing to its high performance for water treatment and soil remediation. In recent years, the BnZVI technology based on the development of nZVI has been further developed. The material chemistry, synthesis methods, and immobilization or surface stabilization of bimetals are discussed. Further, the data of BnZVI (Fe/Ni, Fe/Cu, Fe/Pd) articles that have been studied more frequently in the last decade are summarized in terms of the types of contaminants and the number of research literatures on the same contaminants. Five contaminants including trichloroethylene (TCE), Decabromodi-phenyl Ether (BDE209), chromium (Cr(VI)), nitrate and 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) were selected for in-depth discussion on their influencing factors and removal or degradation mechanisms. Herein, comprehensive views towards mechanisms of BnZVI applications including adsorption, hydrodehalogenation and reduction are provided. Particularly, some ambiguous concepts about formation of micro progenitor cell, production of hydrogen radicals (H·) and H2 and the electron transfer are highlighted. Besides, in-depth discussion of selectivity for N2 from nitrates and co-precipitation of chromium are emphasized. The difference of BnZVI is also discussed.

Separable calcium sulphate modified biochar gel beads for efficient cadmium removal from wastewater

This study outlines the synthesis of a novel, cost-effective composite material comprising calcium sulphate-modified biochar (Ca-BC) cross-linked with polyethyleneimine (PEI) and sodium alginate (SA), which was subsequently transformed into gel beads (Ca-BC@PEI-SA). These beads were engineered to enable effective cadmium ion (Cd(II)) adsorption from wastewater. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of pH, contact time, temperature, and coexisting ions on adsorption performance. The isotherms and kinetics in the adsorption process were investigated. The results indicated that the removal of Cd(II) by Ca-BC@PEI-SA adheres more closely to the Langmuir model, with maximum adsorption capacities of 138.44 mg/g (15 °C), 151.98 mg/g (25 °C), and 165.56 mg/g (35 °C) at different temperatures. The pseudo-secondary model fit well with Cd(II) adsorption kinetics, suggesting that the removal process was a monolayer process controlled by chemisorption. Moreover, the mechanical strength of the Ca-BC@PEI-SA gel beads allowed easy recovery and reduced secondary contamination. In addition, the adsorption capacity remained nearly constant after four cycles. The main Cd(II) adsorption mechanisms involved surface complexation, ion exchange, and cation-π-bonding interactions.

Synthesis and investigation on synergetic effect of activated carbon loaded silver nanoparticles with enhanced photocatalytic and antibacterial activities

In this study, we synthesized silver nanoparticle-loaded cashew nut shell activated carbon (Ag/CNSAC). The synthesized samples were characterized by XRD, XPS, SEM with EDS, FT-IR, and BET analysis. The XRD, XPS, and EDS data provided convincing proof that Ag loaded on CNSAC is formed. The energy dispersive spectrum analysis and X-ray diffraction pattern both supported the face-centered cubic and amorphous structures of Ag/CNSAC. The SEM micrographs showed the inner surface development of Ag NPs and many tiny pores in CNSAC. The photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) dye by the Ag/CNSAC photocatalyst was investigated. This effective degradation of MB dye by Ag/CNSAC is attributed to the cooperative action of Ag as a photocatalyst and CNSAC as a catalytic support and adsorbent. In tests with gram-positive and negative bacteria including Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), the as-synthesized Ag/CNSAC showed outstanding antibacterial efficiency. Additionally, this study demonstrates a workable procedure for creating an affordable and efficient Ag/CNSAC for the photocatalytic eradication of organic contaminants.

Removal of tetracycline in aqueous solution by iron-loaded biochar derived from polymeric ferric sulfate and bagasse

In this study, the tetracycline (TC) removal performance of iron-loaded biochar (BPFSB) derived from sugarcane bagasse and polymerized iron sulfate was investigated, and the mechanism of TC removal was also explored by study of isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamics and characterization of fresh and used BPFSB (XRD, FTIR, SEM and XPS). The results showed that under optimized conditions (initial pH 2; BPFSB dosage 0.8 g·L-1; TC initial concentration 100 mg·L-1; Contact time 24 h; temperature 298 K), the removal efficiency of TC was as high as 99.03%. The isothermal removal of TC followed well the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin models, indicating that multilayer surface chemisorption dominated the TC removal. The maximum removal capacity of TC by BPFSB at different temperatures was 185.5 mg·g-1 (298 K), 192.7 mg·g-1 (308 K), and 230.9 mg·g-1 (318 K), respectively. The pseudo-second-kinetic model described the TC removal better, while its rate-controlling step was a combination of liquid film diffusion, intraparticle diffusion, and chemical reaction. Meanwhile, TC removal was also a spontaneous and endothermic process, during which the randomness and disorder between the solid-liquid interface was increased. According to the characterization of BPFSBs before and after TC removal, H-bonding and complexation were the major interactions for TC surface adsorption. Furthermore, BPFSB was efficiently regenerated by NaOH. In summary, BPFSB had the potential for practical application in TC removal.

Functional materials contributing to the removal of chlorinated hydrocarbons from soil and groundwater: Classification and intrinsic chemical-biological removal mechanisms

Chlorinated hydrocarbons (CHs) are the main contaminants in soil and groundwater and have posed great challenge on the remediation of soil and ground water. Different remediation materials have been developed to deal with the environmental problems caused by CHs. Remediation materials can be classified into three main categories according to the corresponding technologies: adsorption materials, chemical reduction materials and bioaugmentation materials. In this paper, the classification and preparation of the three materials are briefly described in terms of synthesis and properties according to the different types. Then, a detailed review of the remediation mechanisms and applications of the different materials in soil and groundwater remediation is presented in relation to the various properties of the materials and the different challenges encountered in laboratory research or in the environmental application. The removal trends in different environments were found to be largely similar, which means that composite materials tend to be more effective in removing CHs in actual remediation. For instance, adsorbents were found to be effective when combined with other materials, due to the ability to take advantage of the respective strengths of both materials. The rapid removal of CHs while minimizing the impact of CHs on another material and the material itself on the environment. Finally, suggestions for the next research directions are given in conjunction with this paper.

Fabricating Amorphous Zero-Valent Iron for Cr(VI) Efficient Reduction: Unveiling the Effect of Ethylenediamine on Physicochemical Properties

Amorphous zero-valent iron (AZVI) has attracted wide attention due to its high-efficiency reduction ability. However, the effect of different EDA/Fe(II) molar ratios on the physicochemical properties of the synthesized AZVI requires further investigation. Herein, series of AZVI samples were prepared by changing the molar ratio of EDA/Fe(II) to 1/1 (AZVI@1), 2/1 (AZVI@2), 3/1 (AZVI@3), and 4/1 (AZVI@4). When the EDA/Fe(II) ratio increased from 0/1 to 3/1, the Fe⁰ proportion on the AZVI surface increased from 26.0 to 35.2% and the reducing ability was enhanced. As for AZVI@4, the surface was severely oxidized to form a large amount of Fe₃O₄, and the Fe⁰ content was only 74.0%. Moreover, the removal ability of Cr(VI) was in the order AZVI@3 > AZVI@2 > AZVI@1 > AZVI@4. The isothermal titration calorimetry results revealed that the increase of the molar ratio of EDA/Fe(II) would lead to the stronger complexation of EDA with Fe(II), which resulted in the gradual decrease of the yield of AZVI@1 to AZVI@4 and the gradual deterioration of water pollution after the synthesis. Therefore, based on the evaluation of all indicators, AZVI@2 was the optimal material, not only because its yield was as high as 88.7% and the secondary water pollution level was low, but most importantly, the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) by AZVI@2 was excellent. Furthermore, the actual Cr(VI) wastewater with the concentration of 14.80 mg/L was treated with AZVI@2, and the removal rate of 97.0% was achieved after only a 30 min reaction. This work clarified the effect of different ratios of EDA/Fe(II) on the physicochemical properties of AZVI, which provided insights for guiding the reasonable synthesis of AZVI and is also conducive to investigating the reaction mechanism of AZVI in Cr(VI) remediation.

Facile preparation of activated carbon supported nano zero-valent iron for Cd(Ⅱ) removal in aqueous environment

Activated carbon-supported nano-zero-valent iron (nZVI@AC) is considered to be one of the most promising materials for in-situ remediation of pollutants in aqueous environment, while liquid phase reduction (LPR) is one of the most commonly used preparation methods for nZVI@AC. However, the complex operation and the requirement of various agents limit the practical application of the traditional liquid-phase reduction (TLPR). In this study, an improved liquid phase reduction method (ILPR) was proposed, which was characterized by solid-state dosing of reducing agents. Compared with TLPR, ILPR simplified the preparation process, while there was no requirement of polyethylene glycol and ethanol. When the Cd(II) removal efficiency was used as the evaluation index, the preferred parameters of ILPR were as follows: AC/FeSO₄·7H₂O mass ratio was 15:1; NaBH₄ dosage was 8 g; ultrasonic time was 1 h; stirring time was 20 min. Moreover, the Cd(II) removal efficiency of nZVI@AC prepared by ILPR (nZVI@AC-I) was greater than 92.00%, which was superior to that of nZVI@AC prepared by TLPR (nZVI@AC-T). The characterization results showed that the pore parameters, surface functional groups and iron contents of nZVI@AC-I and nZVI@AC-T were basically the same. However, the distribution of iron-containing particles on the surface of nZVI@AC-I was more uniform. Furthermore, the Fe⁰ in nZVI@AC-I had a smaller particle size and a higher content. Overall, this study provided a promising approach for nZVI@AC preparation.

Unveiling the positive effect of mineral induced natural organic matter (NOM) on catalyst properties and catalytic dechlorination performance: An experiment and DFT study

Herein, we report the significant effects of natural organic matter contained in natural zeolite (Z-NOM) on the physicochemical characteristics of a Ni/Fe@natural zeolite (NF@NZ) catalyst and its decontamination performance toward the dechlorination of trichloroethylene (TCE). Z-NOM predominantly consists of humic-like substances and has demonstrable utility in the synthesis of bimetallic catalysts. Compared to NF@NZ_600C (devoid of Z-NOM), NF@NZ had increased dispersibility and mobility and showed significant enhancement in the catalytic dechlorination of TCE owing to the encapsulation of Ni⁰/Fe⁰ nanoparticles by Z-NOM. The results of corrosion experiments, spectroscopic analyses, and H₂ production experiments confirmed that Ni⁰ acted as an efficient cocatalyst with Fe⁰ to enhance the dechlorination of TCE to ethane, and Z-NOM-capped Ni⁰ showed improved adsorption of TCE and atomic hydrogen on their reactive sites and oxidation resistance. The density functional theory (DFT) studies have substantiated the improved adsorption of TCE due to the presence of NOM (especially by COOH structure) and the enhanced charge density at the Ni site in the Ni/Fe bimetal alloy for the stronger adsorption of hydrogen atoms that ultimately enhanced the TCE reduction reaction. These findings illustrate the efficiency of NOM containing natural minerals toward the synthesis of bimetallic catalysts for practical applications.
