Enhanced degradation of atrazine through UV/bisulfite: Mechanism, reaction pathways and toxicological analysis

Chronic toxic effects of erythromycin and its photodegradation products on microalgae Chlorella pyrenoidosa

The photodegradation products (PDPs) of antibiotics in the aquatic environment received increasing concern, but their chronic effects on microalgae remain unclear. This study initially focused on examining the acute effects of erythromycin (ERY), then explored the chronic impacts of ERY PDPs on Chlorella pyrenoidosa. ERY of 4.0 - 32 mg/L ERY notably inhibited the cell growth and chlorophyll synthesis. The determined 96 h median effective concentration of ERY to C. pyrenoidosa was 11.78 mg/L. Higher concentrations of ERY induced more serious oxidative damage, antioxidant enzymes alleviated the oxidative stress. 6 PDPs (PDP749, PDP747, PDP719, PDP715, PDP701 and PDP557) were identified in the photodegradation process of ERY. The predicted combined toxicity of PDPs increased in the first 3 h, then decreased. Chronic exposure showed a gradual decreasing inhibition on microalgae growth and chlorophyll content. The acute effect of ERY PDPs manifested as growth stimulation, but the chronic effect manifested as growth inhibition. The malonaldehyde contents decreased with the degradation time of ERY at 7, 14 and 21 d. However, the malonaldehyde contents of ERY PDPs treatments were elevated compared to those in the control group after 21 d. Risk assessment still need to consider the potential toxicity of degradation products under long-term exposure.

Meta-metabolomic responses of river biofilms to cobalt exposure and use of dose-response model trends as an indicator of effects

The response of the meta-metabolome is rarely used to characterize the effects of contaminants on a whole community. Here, the meta-metabolomic fingerprints of biofilms were examined after 1, 3 and 7 days of exposure to five concentrations of cobalt (from background concentration to 1 × 10-5 M) in aquatic microcosms. The untargeted metabolomic data were processed using the DRomics tool to build dose-response models and to calculate benchmark-doses. This approach made it possible to use 100% of the chemical signal instead of being limited to the very few annotated metabolites (7%). These benchmark-doses were further aggregated into an empirical cumulative density function. A trend analysis of the untargeted meta-metabolomic feature dose-response curves after 7 days of exposure suggested the presence of a concentration range inducing defense responses between 1.7 × 10-9 and 2.7 × 10-6 M, and of a concentration range inducing damage responses from 2.7 × 10-6 M and above. This distinction was in good agreement with changes in the other biological parameters studied (biomass and chlorophyll content). This study demonstrated that the molecular defense and damage responses can be related to contaminant concentrations and represents a promising approach for environmental risk assessment of metals.

Bio-engineered sensing of Atrazine by green CdS quantum dots: Evidence from electrochemical studies and DFT simulations

The present investigation reports a comprehensible and responsive strategy for identifying atrazine in several conditions using an extensive electrochemical method. CdS Quantum dots were synthesized via a greener approach, and their formation was endorsed by numerous characterization techniques such as FTIR, SEM, Raman, UV-Vis, and XRD. Owing to the splendid electrocatalytic behavior, Green CdS quantum dots (QDs) of crystallite size ∼2 nm was opted as the sensor material and were, therefore, incorporated on the bare carbon paste electrode's surface. The developed sensor demonstrated an impressive outcome for atrazine sensing accompanied by superior selectivity and sensitivity. The lower detection limit (LLOD) of 0.53 μM was attained using the developed sensor in a linear concentration range of 10-100 μM. Furthermore, the practical pertinence of the developed sensor was examined on distilled water, wastewater, and fresh liquid milk, resulting in a tremendous retrieval of atrazine (91.33-99.8%).

Degradation of organic pollutants through activating bisulfite with lanthanum ferrite-loaded biomass carbon

The removal of methylene blue (MB) in water is a challenging task due to its toxicity, carcinogenicity and resistance to biodegradation. Accordingly, a novel composite catalyst (BC@LF) was prepared by loading lanthanum ferrite (LaFeO3) on biomass carbon (BC) to activate bisulfite (BS) for methylene MB removal in this study. Characterization via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) indicated that LaFeO3 was successfully loaded on BC. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis suggested that [triple bond, length as m-dash]Fe(iii) was the main active site for BS activation. It was found that 99.4% MB was removed within 60 min in BC@LF/BS system. Sulfate radical (SO4˙-) and hydroxyl radicals (HO˙) were proved to be responsible for MB removal in the BC@LF/BS system and SO5˙- might also be involved in MB removal. The degradation efficiency of MB in the BC@LF/BS system decreased with increasing pH, while the adsorption efficiency of BC@LF for MB improved with increasing pH. Additionally, BC@LF exhibited good reusability for BS activation in successive uses. The BC@LF/BS system exhibited favorable removal effect for various organic compounds, indicating that it has good applicability in the treatment of organic wastewater.

Rapid biodegradation of atrazine by a novel Paenarthrobacter ureafaciens ZY and its effects on soil native microbial community dynamic

An atrazine-utilizing bacterium, designated as ZY, was isolated from agricultural soil and identified as Paenarthrobacter ureafaciens. The P. ureafaciens ZY demonstrated a significant degradation capacity of atrazine, with the degradation efficiency of 12.5 mg L^-1 h^-1 in liquid media (at pH 7, 30°C, and the atrazine level of 100 mg L^-1). The P. ureafaciens ZY contained three atrazine-degrading genes (i.e., trzN, atzB, and atzC) could metabolize atrazine to form cyanuric acid, which showed lower biotoxicity than the parent atrazine as predicted by Ecological Structure Activity Relationships model. A laboratory-scale pot experiment was performed to examine the degradation of atrazine by P. ureafaciens ZY inoculation and investigate its effects on the native microbial communities. The results exhibited that the P. ureafaciens ZY was conductive to the degradation of atrazine, increased the total soil phospholipid fatty acids at the atrazine level of 50, 70, and 100 mg kg^-1. By using high-throughput sequencing analysis, Frateuria, Dyella, Burkholderia-Caballeronia-Paraburkholderia were considered as the most important indigenous atrazine-degrading microorganisms due to their relative abundances were positively correlated with the atrazine degradation rate. In addition, P. ureafaciens ZY also increased the abundance of atrazine-degrading genus Streptomyces and Bacillus, indicating that there may be a synergic relationship between them in the process of atrazine degradation. Our work provides a new insight between inoculums and native microorganisms on the degradation of atrazine.
