Air pollution and human cognition: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Association of solid fuel use with cognitive function and the modifying role of lifestyle: A nationwide cohort study in China

BACKGROUND

As opposed to a healthy lifestyle, indoor air pollution from solid fuel use may be harmful for cognitive function. However, the extent to which lifestyle modifies the association between solid fuel use and cognitive function remains unknown.

METHODS

A total of 21,008 individuals aged 16 to 92 were enrolled in 2010 and followed up to 2014 in the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS). Cognitive function was assessed using standardized math and word tests in two waves. Solid fuel use at baseline was assessed by self-reporting of firewood, straw, or coal used for cooking. Lifestyle profile was classified into two groups (favorable vs. unfavorable) based on five modifiable lifestyle factors including alcohol drinking, smoking, body mass index, diet, and physical activity. Linear mixed-effects models were employed to assess the association of solid fuel use and lifestyle with cognitive function. The effect modification of lifestyle was analyzed.

RESULTS

A total of 49.7% of the study population used solid fuels for cooking and 17.4% had a favorable lifestyle. Solid fuel use was associated with a significant decrease in cognitive function (β = -0.29, 95% CI: -0.39, -0.19 for math test; β = -0.62, 95% CI: -0.84, -0.41 for word test). Lifestyle significantly modified this association (p-interaction: 0.006 for math test; 0.016 for word test), with the corresponding association being less pronounced among participants adhering to a favorable lifestyle compared to those with an unfavorable lifestyle.

CONCLUSION

A favorable lifestyle may attenuate the adverse association between solid fuel use and cognitive function. Adopting a favorable lifestyle has the potential to mitigate the adverse neurological effects due to indoor air pollution.

The interaction between physical activity and ambient particulate matters on cognitive function among Chinese community-dwelling older adults

BACKGROUND

The interaction between physical activity (PA) and ambient particulate matters (PMs) on cognition is rarely investigated. Our study aimed to assess the interactions of PA and PMs on cognitive function in older adults.

METHODS

Our study comprised 3937 Chinese community-dwelling older adults. Cognition was evaluated using the Mini-Mental State Examination. PA information was gathered using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. The data of PMs were obtained from China High Air Pollutants (CHAP). Linear regressions model and interaction plots were applied to assess and visualize the interaction of PA and PMs on cognition, respectively. Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) method was employed to visualize discernible thresholds for the interaction.

RESULTS

PMs were negatively associated with MMSE scores (PM1: β = -0.40, 95 % CI: -0.58, -0.28; PM2.5: β = -0.46, 95 % CI: -0.64, -0.29; PM10: β = -0.44, 95 % CI: -0.61, -0.26), and PA was positively affiliated with MMSE scores (β = 0.18, 95 % CI: -0.01, 0.38). Interaction plots and BKMR demonstrated that adverse connotations of PMs with MMSE increased with the elevated PA levels, and the positive associations of PA with MMSE scores were attenuated by increased PMs (all Pinteraction < 0.20). Discernible thresholds for the interaction between PMs and PA on MMSE were found.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings suggest that PA should not be taken at higher PMs concentrations, and that low level of PA could be performed in PMs polluted environment to improve cognitive function. Further experimental and cohort researches are required to reproduce our discovery.

Effects of high-intensity chronic noise on spatial memory in male versus female rats

The detrimental effects of high-intensity noise on the auditory system and emotional status, including the induction of anxiety, are well documented. Preclinical as well as epidemiological and clinical studies have solidly established differential responses between males and females to various stressful stimuli, including high-intensity white noise (HIWN). However, whether chronic exposure to noise affects cognitive functions and whether this effect is sex dependent has not been adequately addressed. In this study, we used two cognitive test paradigms, such as the Morris water maze (MWM) and the multi-branch maze (MBM), to test the effect of chronic HIWN on indices of spatial learning and memory in both male and female Wistar rats. Our findings indicate that daily (1 h) exposure to 100 dB of noise for 30 consecutive days induces different task-dependent responses in male versus female rats. For example, in the acquisition phase of MWM, female rats exposed to noise outperformed their male counterparts at twice the speed. Similarly, in the MBM test, noise-exposed female rats outperformed the male rats in reaching the nest box. It is clear from these studies that noise impairs cognitive functions twice as negatively in male rats as in female rats. Thus, sex-related differences in spatial learning and memory in response to HIWN must be taken into consideration when investigating the neurobiological components and/or treatment modalities.

Air pollution, sustainable development, and corporate R&D: Evidence from emerging countries

This paper studies the adverse effect of air pollution on corporate research and development (R&D) and how sustainable development moderates this negative impact in emerging market economies (EMEs). Using a sample of 18 EMEs' firm-level data, the empirical results show that firms substantially reduce R&D expenses in the face of increasing air pollution, and this adverse effect becomes less pronounced with higher levels of sustainable development. Our analyses suggest that air pollution negatively affects R&D by increasing firms' difficulties in hiring highly skilled people or raising operation and production costs. Furthermore, we divide our sample firms into two groups according to some institutional quality factors related to sustainable development. The negative impact of air pollution on R&D is lower in countries with higher levels of institutional quality. Based on our research, to attract more R&D investment, EMEs should not only make an effort to manage air pollution but also invest more in human capital and improve their institutional quality to amplify the impact of their efforts.

Interactive effect of air pollution and genetic risk of depression on processing speed by resting-state functional connectivity of occipitoparietal network

BACKGROUND

Air pollution, a reversible environmental factor, was significantly associated with the cognitive domains that are impaired in major depressive disorder (MDD), notably processing speed. Limited evidence explores the interactive effect of air pollution and the genetic risk of depression on cognition. This cross-sectional study aims to extend the research by specifically examining how this interaction influences depression-related cognitive impairment and resting-state brain function.

METHODS

Eligible participants were 497 healthy adult volunteers (48.7% males, mean age 24.5) living in Beijing for at least 1 year and exposed to relatively high air pollution from the local community controlling for socioeconomic and genomic. Six months' ambient air pollution exposures were assessed based on residential addresses using monthly averages of fine particulate matter with a diameter of less than or equal to 2.5 μm (PM2.5). A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and cognitive performance assessments. The polygenic risk score (PRS) of MDD was used to estimate genetic susceptibility.

RESULTS

Using a general linear model and partial least square regression, we observed a negative association between resting-state local connectivity in precuneus and PRS-by-PM2.5 interactive effect (PFWE = 0.028), indicating that PM2.5 exposure reduced the spontaneous activity in precuneus in individuals at high genetic risk for MDD. DNA methylation and gene expression of the SLC30A3 gene, responsible for maintaining zinc-glutamate homeostasis, was suggestively associated with this local connectivity. For the global functional connectivity, the polygenic risk for MDD augmented the neural impact of PM2.5 exposure, especially in the frontal-parietal and frontal-limbic regions of the default mode network (PFDR < 0.05). In those genetically predisposed to MDD, increased PM2.5 exposure positively correlated with resting-state functional connectivity between the left angular gyrus and left cuneus gyrus. This connectivity was negatively associated with processing speed.

CONCLUSIONS

Our cross-sectional study suggests that air pollution may be associated with an increased likelihood of cognitive impairment in individuals genetically predisposed to depression, potentially through alterations in the resting-state function of the occipitoparietal and default mode network.

Greater exposure to PM2.5 and PM10 was associated with lower corneal nerve measures: the Maastricht study - a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Epidemiological and toxicological studies indicate that increased exposure to air pollutants can lead to neurodegenerative diseases. To further confirm this relationship, we evaluated the association between exposure to ambient air pollutants and corneal nerve measures as a surrogate for neurodegeneration, using corneal confocal microscopy.

METHODS

We used population-based observational cross-sectional data from The Maastricht Study including N = 3635 participants (mean age 59.3 years, 51.6% were women, and 19.9% had type 2 diabetes) living in the Maastricht area. Using the Geoscience and hEalth Cohort COnsortium (GECCO) data we linked the yearly average exposure levels of ambient air pollutants at home address-level [particulate matter with diameters of ≤ 2.5 µm (PM2.5), and ≤ 10.0 µm (PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and elemental carbon (EC)]. We used linear regression analysis to study the associations between Z-score for ambient air pollutants concentrations (PM2.5, PM10, NO2, and EC) and Z-score for individual corneal nerve measures (corneal nerve bifurcation density, corneal nerve density, corneal nerve length, and fractal dimension).

RESULTS

After adjustment for potential confounders (age, sex, level of education, glucose metabolism status, corneal confocal microscopy lag time, inclusion year of participants, smoking status, and alcohol consumption), higher Z-scores for PM2.5 and PM10 were associated with lower Z-scores for corneal nerve bifurcation density, nerve density, nerve length, and nerve fractal dimension [stβ (95% CI): PM2.5 -0.10 (-0.14; -0.05), -0.04 (-0.09; 0.01), -0.11 (-0.16; -0.06), -0.20 (-0.24; -0.15); and PM10 -0.08 (-0.13; -0.03), -0.04 (-0.09; 0.01), -0.08 (-0.13; -0.04), -0.17 (-0.21; -0.12)], respectively. No associations were found between NO2 and EC and corneal nerve measures.

CONCLUSIONS

Our population-based study demonstrated that exposure to higher levels of PM2.5 and PM10 are associated with higher levels of corneal neurodegeneration, estimated from lower corneal nerve measures. Our results suggest that air pollution may be a determinant for neurodegeneration assessed in the cornea and may impact the ocular surface health as well.

Air pollution, traffic noise, mental health, and cognitive development: A multi-exposure longitudinal study of London adolescents in the SCAMP cohort

BACKGROUND

There is increasing evidence that air pollution and noise may have detrimental psychological impacts, but there are few studies evaluating adolescents, ground-level ozone exposure, multi-exposure models, or metrics beyond outdoor residential exposure. This study aimed to address these gaps.

METHODS

Annual air pollution and traffic noise exposure at home and school were modelled for adolescents in the Greater London SCAMP cohort (N=7555). Indoor, outdoor and hybrid environments were modelled for air pollution. Cognitive and mental health measures were self-completed at two timepoints (baseline aged 11-12 and follow-up aged 13-15). Associations were modelled using multi-level multivariate linear or ordinal logistic regression.

RESULTS

This is the first study to investigate ground-level ozone exposure in relation to adolescent executive functioning, finding that a 1 interquartile range increase in outdoor ozone corresponded to -0.06 (p < 0.001) z-score between baseline and follow-up, 38 % less improvement than average (median development + 0.16). Exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO2), 24-hour traffic noise, and particulate matter < 10 µg/m3 (PM10) were also significantly associated with slower executive functioning development when adjusting for ozone. In two-pollutant models, particulate matter and ozone were associated with increased externalising problems. Daytime and evening noise were associated with higher anxiety symptoms, and 24-hour noise with worse speech-in-noise perception (auditory processing). Adjusting for air pollutants, 24-hour noise was also associated with higher anxiety symptoms and slower fluid intelligence development.

CONCLUSIONS

Ozone's potentially detrimental effects on adolescent cognition have been overlooked in the literature. Our findings also suggest harmful impacts of other air pollutants and noise on mental health. Further research should attempt to replicate these findings and use mechanistic enquiry to enhance causal inference. Policy makers should carefully consider how to manage the public health impacts of ozone, as efforts to reduce other air pollutants such as NO2 can increase ozone levels, as will the progression of climate change.

Effect of air pollutants particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and ozone (O3) on cognitive health

Impaired cognitive health is the leading cause of various disabilities and disorders. Air pollution has been dramatically increasing over the last few decades and has been identified as a potential risk factor for impaired cognitive health. This study investigates the effect of air pollutants, particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ground-level ozone, on global cognitive health. The data on environmental pollutants and cognitive health were recorded from PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Initially, 790 articles were identified after screening for duplicates and applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 21 studies were included, and data was synthesized to get a pooled result. The overall results revealed that increased exposure to PM2.5 was positively and significantly associated with cognitive decline (OR 1.49; 95% CI 1.11, 1.99; p = 0.01). The risk of cognitive impairment due to PM10 (OR 1.30; 95% CI 1.00-1.70, p = 0.05), and SO2 (OR 1.39; 95% CI 1.27-1.51; p < 0.01) exposure were also significantly heightened. The study findings show that overall exposure to particulate matter PM2.5, PM10, and SO2 was associated with an increased risk of a decrease in global cognitive functions. The findings suggest that reducing levels of air pollutants could be a strategic approach to mitigate cognitive health risks in populations worldwide.

Multi-component liquid-infused systems: a new approach to functional coatings

Antifouling liquid-infused surfaces have generated interest in multiple fields due to their diverse applications in industry and medicine. In nearly all reports to date, the liquid component consists of only one chemical species. However, unlike traditional solid surfaces, the unique nature of liquid surfaces holds the potential for synergistic and even adaptive functionality simply by including additional elements in the liquid coating. In this work, we explore the concept of multi-component liquid-infused systems, in which the coating liquid consists of a primary liquid and a secondary component or components that provide additional functionality. For ease of understanding, we categorize recently reported multi-component liquid-infused surfaces according to the size of the secondary components: molecular scale, in which the secondary components are molecules; nanoscale, in which they are nanoparticles or their equivalent; and microscale, in which the additional components are micrometer size or above. We present examples at each scale, showing how introducing a secondary element into the liquid can result in synergistic effects, such as maintaining a pristine surface while actively modifying the surrounding environment, which are difficult to achieve in other surface treatments. The review highlights the diversity of fabrication methods and provides perspectives on future research directions. Introducing secondary components into the liquid matrix of liquid-infused surfaces is a promising strategy with significant potential to create a new class of multifunctional materials. Telomere length in early childhood and its association with attention: a study in 4-6 year old children

Telomere length (TL), a marker of cellular aging, has been studied in adults with regard to its connection to cognitive function. However, little is known about the association between TL and cognitive development in children. This study investigated the interplay between TL and cognitive functioning in 283 Belgian children aged four to six years of the Environmental Influence on Aging in Early Life (ENVIRONAGE) birth cohort. Child leukocyte TL was measured using qPCR, while cognitive functioning, including attention and memory, was assessed using the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB). Linear regression models were employed to examine the association between TL and cognitive outcomes, adjusting for potential confounders. We found an inverse association between TL and the spatial errors made during the Motor Screening task (p = 0.017), indicating a higher motor accuracy in children with longer telomeres. No significant associations were found between TL and other cognitive outcomes. Our results suggest a specific link between TL and motor accuracy but not with the other cognitive domains.

The Health-Related and Learning Performance Effects of Air Pollution and Other Urban-Related Environmental Factors on School-Age Children and Adolescents-A Scoping Review of Systematic Reviews

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

This scoping review aims to assess the impact of air pollution, traffic noise, heat, and green and blue space exposures on the physical and cognitive development of school-age children and adolescents. While existing evidence indicates adverse effects of transport-related exposures on their health, a comprehensive scoping review is necessary to consolidate findings on various urban environmental exposures' effects on children's development.

RECENT FINDINGS

There is consistent evidence on how air pollution negatively affects children's cognitive and respiratory health and learning performance, increasing their susceptibility to diseases in their adult life. Scientific evidence on heat and traffic noise, while less researched, indicates that they negatively affect children's health. On the contrary, green space exposure seems to benefit or mitigate these adverse effects, suggesting a potential strategy to promote children's cognitive and physical development in urban settings. This review underscores the substantial impact of urban exposures on the physical and mental development of children and adolescents. It highlights adverse health effects that can extend into adulthood, affecting academic opportunities and well-being beyond health. While acknowledging the necessity for more research on the mechanisms of air pollution effects and associations with heat and noise exposure, the review advocates prioritizing policy changes and urban planning interventions. This includes minimizing air pollution and traffic noise while enhancing urban vegetation, particularly in school environments, to ensure the healthy development of children and promote lifelong health.

Experimental analysis of PM2.5 reduction characteristics between Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora) and sawtooth oak (Quercus acutissima) saplings under different densities and arrangement structures

As global air pollution, particularly fine particulate matter (PM2.5), has become a major environmental problem, various PM2.5 mitigation technologies including green infrastructure have received significant attention. However, owing to spatial constraints on urban greening, there is a lack of management plans for urban forests to efficiently mitigate PM2.5. In this study, we assessed the PM2.5 reduction capabilities of Pinus densiflora (Korean red pine) and Quercus acutissima (sawtooth oak) by measuring the changes of PM2.5 concentrations using an experimental chamber system. In addition, the PM2.5 reduction efficiency in 90 min (PMRE90) and the amount of PM2.5 reduction per leaf area (PMRLA) were compared based on arrangement structures and density levels. The results showed that the PM2.5 reduction by plants was significantly greater than that of the control experiment without any plants, and an additional reduction effect of approximately 1.38 times was induced by a 1.5 m s-1 air flow. The PMRE90 of Korean red pine was the highest at medium density. In contrast, the PMRE90 of sawtooth oak was the highest at high density. The PMRLA of both species was highest at low densities. The different responses of the species to total reduction were well explained by total leaf area (TLA). The PMRE90 of both species was positively correlated with TLA. The PMRLA of sawtooth oak was approximately 2.3 times greater than that of Korean red pine. However, there were no significant differences in both PMRE90 and PMRLA between the arrangement structures. Our findings reveal the potential mechanisms of vegetation in reducing PM2.5 according to arrangement structure and density. This highlights the importance of efficiently using urban green spaces with spatial constraints on PM2.5 mitigation in the future.

Exposure to ambient air pollution and cognitive function: an analysis of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing cohort

BACKGROUND

An increasing number of studies suggest adverse effects of exposure to ambient air pollution on cognitive function, but the evidence is still limited. We investigated the associations between long-term exposure to air pollutants and cognitive function in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) cohort of older adults.

METHODS

Our sample included 8,883 individuals from ELSA, based on a nationally representative study of people aged ≥ 50 years, followed-up from 2002 until 2017. Exposure to air pollutants was modelled by the CMAQ-urban dispersion model and assigned to the participants' residential postcodes. Cognitive test scores of memory and executive function were collected biennially. The associations between these cognitive measures and exposure to ambient concentrations of NO2, PM10, PM2.5 and ozone were investigated using mixed-effects models adjusted for time-varying age, physical activity and smoking status, as well as baseline gender and level of education.

RESULTS

Increasing long-term exposure per interquartile range (IQR) of NO2 (IQR: 13.05 μg/m3), PM10 (IQR: 3.35 μg/m3) and PM2.5 (IQR: 2.7 μg/m3) were associated with decreases in test scores of composite memory by -0.10 (95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.14, -0.07), -0.02 [-0.04, -0.01] and -0.08 [-0.11, -0.05], respectively. The same increases in NO2, PM10 and PM2.5 were associated with decreases in executive function score of -0.31 [-0.38, -0.23], -0.05 [-0.08, -0.02] and -0.16 [-0.22, -0.10], respectively. The association with ozone was inverse across both tests. Similar results were reported for the London-dwelling sub-sample of participants.

CONCLUSIONS

The present study was based on a long follow-up with several repeated measurements per cohort participant and long-term air pollution exposure assessment at a fine spatial scale. Increasing long-term exposure to NO2, PM10 and PM2.5 was associated with a decrease in cognitive function in older adults in England. This evidence can inform policies related to modifiable environmental exposures linked to cognitive decline.

Maternal exposure to ambient air temperature and adverse birth outcomes: An umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses

BACKGROUND

Multiple systematic reviews on prenatal ambient temperature and adverse birth outcomes exist, but the overall epidemiological evidence and the appropriate metric for thermal stress remain unclear. An umbrella review was performed to summarise and appraise the evidence with recommendations.

METHODS

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses on the associations between ambient temperature and adverse birth outcomes (preterm birth, stillbirth, birth weight, low birth weight, and small for gestational age) up to December 20, 2023, were synthesised according to a published protocol. Databases PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, MEDLINE/Ovid, EMBASE/Ovid, Web of Science Core Collection, systematic reviews repositories, electronic grey literature, and references were searched. Risk of bias was assessed using Joanna Briggs Institute's critical appraisal tool.

RESULTS

Eleven systematic reviews, including two meta-analyses, were included. This comprised 90 distinct observational studies that employed multiple temperature assessment metrics with a very high overlap of primary studies. Primary studies were mostly from the United States while both Africa and South Asia contributed only three studies. A majority (7 out of 11) of the systematic reviews were rated as moderate risk of bias. All systematic reviews indicated that maternal exposures to both extremely high and low temperatures, particularly during late gestation are associated with increased risks of preterm birth, stillbirth, and reduced fetal growth. However, due to great differences in the exposure assessments, high heterogeneity, imprecision, and methodological limitations of the included systematic reviews, the overall epidemiological evidence was classified as probable evidence of causation. No study assessed biothermal metrics for thermal stress.

CONCLUSIONS

Despite the notable methodological differences, prenatal exposure to extreme ambient temperatures, particularly during late pregnancy, was associated with adverse birth outcomes. Adhering to the appropriate systematic review guidelines for environmental health research, incorporating biothermal metrics into exposure assessment, evidence from broader geodemographic settings, and interventions are recommended in future studies.

Association of air pollution exposure during pregnancy and early childhood with children's cognitive performance and behavior at age six

BACKGROUND

The impact of air pollution on neurodevelopment in children has attracted much attention in recent times. We aim to clarify the association between prenatal and postnatal air pollutant exposure and children's cognitive performance and behavior at age six.

METHODS

This study was conducted based on a birth cohort study in Japan. Children's intelligence quotient (IQ) was assessed using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children and a score <85 was deemed as low intelligence. A score ≥60 on the Child Behavior Checklist indicated behavioral problems. Exposure to outdoor fine particulate matter (PM2.5) during pregnancy and early childhood was estimated using a spatiotemporal model, while indoor concentrations of air pollutants inside subjects' homes were measured for a week when the child was of ages 1.5 and 3. The associations of exposure to air pollution during pregnancy and after childbirth with cognitive performance and behavior were analyzed using logistic regression models.

RESULTS

The estimated exposure to outdoor PM2.5 during pregnancy and early childhood was not associated with decreased cognitive performance. However, exposure during the first trimester, 0-1 and 3-5 years of age was associated with children's externalizing problems (odds ratios (ORs) were 2.77 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.05-7.29], 1.66 [95%CI: 1.05-2.62], and 1.80 [95%CI: 1.19-2.74] per interquartile range (IQR) increase, respectively). Exposure to indoor PM2.5 and coarse particles after childbirth was associated with lower full scale IQ (ORs were 1.46 [95%CI: 1.03-2.08] and 1.85 [95%CI: 1.12-3.07] per IQR increase, respectively). However, some inverse associations were also observed.

CONCLUSIONS

These results suggest associations between prenatal and postnatal exposure to outdoor air pollution and behavioral problems, and between indoor air pollution after childbirth and cognitive performance at age six. However, the effects of exposure to outdoor PM2.5 during pregnancy on cognitive performance were not observed.

Clean air in Europe for all! Taking stock of the proposed revision to the ambient air quality directives: a joint ERS, HEI and ISEE workshop report

Ambient air pollution is a major public health concern and comprehensive new legislation is currently being considered to improve air quality in Europe. The European Respiratory Society (ERS), Health Effects Institute (HEI), and International Society for Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE) organised a joint meeting on May 24, 2023 in Brussels, Belgium, to review and critically evaluate the latest evidence on the health effects of air pollution and discuss ongoing revisions of the European Ambient Air Quality Directives (AAQDs). A multi-disciplinary expert group of air pollution and health researchers, patient and medical societies, and policy representatives participated. This report summarises key discussions at the meeting.

Correlation between air pollution and cognitive impairment among older individuals: empirical evidence from China

BACKGROUND

Little information is available regarding the impact of air pollution on cognitive impairment in older individuals in developing countries. This study empirically tested the impacts of the air quality index (AQI), air pollution intensity (quantified by the number of days of extreme air pollution in a year), and different pollutants on the cognitive abilities of older Chinese individuals.

METHODS

A panel of 28,395 participants spanning 122 cities in 2015 and 2018 was used, based on 3-year follow-up survey data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) database. Data from the two phases of the CHARLS microsurvey were combined with relevant statistical data on air pollution in each region in the current year. These two surveys were used to investigate changes in basic health and macro-environmental indicators in older individuals in China, and a mean difference test was conducted. We then reduced the sample selection error by controlling for environmental migration and used two-way fixed and instrumental variable methods for endogenous treatment to avoid the estimation error caused by missing variables.

RESULTS

Air pollution had a significantly negative effect on the cognitive abilities of older individuals (odds ratio [OR]: 1.4633; 95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 1.20899-1.77116). Different pollution intensities(only AQI value is greater than 200 or more) had apparent effects on cognitive impairment, with an OR of approximately 1.0. Sulfur dioxide had significantly negative effects on cognitive ability, with OR of 1.3802 (95% CI: 1.25779-1.51451). Furthermore, air pollution impact analysis showed heterogeneous results in terms of age, sex, education, and regional economic development level. In addition, social adaptability (calculated using social participation, learning, adaptability, and social support) not only had a significant positive effect on the cognitive abilities of older individuals, but also regulated the cognitive decline caused by air pollution.

CONCLUSIONS

Air pollution affects cognitive impairment in older individuals, especially in those with lower education levels, and living in economically underdeveloped areas. This effect is synchronous and has a peak at an AQI of > 200.

Assessing the chemical composition, potential toxicity and cancer risk of airborne fine particulate matter (PM2.5) near a petrochemical industrial area

In the vicinity of a petrochemical industrial region in São Paulo, Brazil, PM_2.5-bound organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), nitro-PAHs, oxy-PAHs, hopanes, and inorganic species were evaluated. Oxidative potential (OP), burden (OB), and Alivibrio fischeri bioluminescence inhibition (AFBIA) assays were conducted to determine the potential health effects of exposure to these compounds. The PM_2.5 mean concentration was 32.0±18.2µgm^-3, and benzo (a)pyrene was found to exceed recommended levels by at least four times. Secondary sources and vehicular emissions were indicated by nitro-PAHs, oxy-PAHs, and inorganic species. The OP and OB results revealed that secondary compounds favored antioxidant depletion. The AFBIA results showed that 64% of the samples were toxic. These findings emphasize the need to reduce the exposure risk and take measures to protect human health.

Long-term exposure to particulate matter and risk of Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia in Korea: a national population-based Cohort Study

BACKGROUND

The prevalence of age-related neurodegenerative diseases has risen in conjunction with an increase in life expectancy. Although there is emerging evidence that air pollution might accelerate or worsen dementia progression, studies on Asian regions remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between long-term exposure to PM₁₀ and the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia in the elderly population in South Korea.

METHODS

The baseline population was 1.4 million people aged 65 years and above who participated in at least one national health checkup program from the National Health Insurance Service between 2008 and 2009. A nationwide retrospective cohort study was designed, and patients were followed from the date of cohort entry (January 1, 2008) to the date of dementia occurrence, death, moving residence, or the end of the study period (December 31, 2019), whichever came first. Long-term average PM₁₀ exposure variable was constructed from national monitoring data considering time-dependent exposure. Extended Cox proportional hazard models with time-varying exposure were used to estimate hazard ratios (HR) for Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia.

RESULTS

A total of 1,436,361 participants were selected, of whom 167,988 were newly diagnosed with dementia (134,811 with Alzheimer's disease and 12,215 with vascular dementia). The results show that for every 10 µg/m³ increase in PM₁₀, the HR was 0.99 (95% CI 0.98-1.00) for Alzheimer's disease and 1.05 (95% CI 1.02-1.08) for vascular dementia. Stratified analysis according to sex and age group showed that the risk of vascular dementia was higher in men and in those under 75 years of age.

CONCLUSION

The results found that long-term PM₁₀ exposure was significantly associated with the risk of developing vascular dementia but not with Alzheimer's disease. These findings suggest that the mechanism behind the PM₁₀-dementia relationship could be linked to vascular damage.

Coagulation effect of atmospheric submicron particles on plant leaves: Key functional characteristics and a comparison with dry deposition

Submicron particles have become a new focus in research on air pollution control. The abilities of urban tree species to retain particles can be used to alleviate urban haze pollution. However, research has focused mostly on plants and environmental conditions rather than on particle itself. Particle migration and transformation at the leaf-air interface are the key to dust retention. Submicron particles coagulate when they are retained by leaves. In this study, NaCl was used to simulate submicron particles. The average sizes of the particles on the leaves of 10 greening tree species in Shanghai in different seasons were measured using the sweep-resuspension method to characterize the coagulation effect. Thereafter, the effects of leaf characteristics were investigated and analyzed in relation to dry deposition velocity. The results indicated that the particles on the leaves of Ginkgo biloba, Osmanthus fragrans, Sabina chinensis (L.) Ant. "Kaizuca," Cinnamomum camphora, and Metasequoia glyptostroboides were large. The seasonal variability of the sizes of the particles on the leaves of different tree species varied. The average particle size was positively correlated with wax content and negatively correlated with single leaf area; however, the other factors correlated with particle size varied by season. For example, in April, the average particle size was positively correlated with tensile strength, wind resistance, adaxial epidermal roughness, and water potential, whereas the effects of stomatal conductance were more complex. Non-significant correlation was identified between coagulation and dry deposition although both were positively correlated with roughness and wax content. This study explored the effects of leaf characteristics on coagulation. The results may serve as a theoretical foundation for explaining the microscopic process underlying dust retention in plants and may provide a clearer scientific basis for the prevention and control of submicron particle pollution and the selection of urban greening tree species.

Associations of Household Solid Fuel Use With Falls and Fall-Related Injuries in Middle-Aged and Older Population in China: A Cohort Study

Objective: This study evaluated the associations of solid fuels with incidence of falls and fall-related injuries. Methods: Data were taken from wave 1∼4 of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, including 15,651 participants aged 45 years and older. Modified Poisson regression was used to examine the associations of solid fuels with falls and fall-related injuries. Results: Modified Poisson regression analysis showed that solid fuels users for cooking had an increasing incidence of falls and fall-related injuries, with RR of 1.211 (95% CI: 1.124, 1.305) and 1.248 (95% CI: 1.107, 1.408); for heating had an incidence, with RR of 1.178 (95% CI: 1.062, 1.306) and 1.134 (95% CI: 0.963, 1.335); combined for cooking and heating, with RR of 1.247 (95% CI: 1.105, 1.408) and 1.185 (95% CI: 0.982, 1.431). Conclusion: Our study suggests that solid fuel use is associated with a higher incidence of falls and fall-related injuries among adults aged 45 years and older in China. It is necessary to restrict solid fuel use to reduce household air pollution and make stronger environmental protection policies to improve household environment.
