Nano zero-valent iron enhances the absorption and transport of chromium in rice (Oryza sativa L.): Implication for Cr risks management in paddy fields

Phosphorus and selenium compounding mitigates Cr stress in peanut seedlings by enhancing growth homeostasis and antioxidant properties

Peanut is an economically important crop, but it is susceptible to Cr contamination. In this study, we used peanut as experimental material to investigate the effects of exogenous P, Se interacting with Cr on the nutrient growth and antioxidant system of peanut seedlings by simulating Cr (0 μM, 50 μM, and 100 μM) stress environment. The results showed that exogenous P, Se supply could mitigate irreversible damage to peanut seedlings by altering the distribution of Cr in roots and aboveground, changing root conformation, and repairing damaged cells to promote growth. When the Cr concentration is 100 μM, it exhibits the highest toxicity. Compared to the control group P and Se (0 MM), the treatment with simultaneous addition of P + Se (0.5 + 6.0) resulted in a significant increase in root length and root tip number by 248.7% and 127.4%, respectively. Additionally, there was a 46.9% increase in chlorophyll content, a 190.2% increase in total surface area of the seedlings, and a respective increase of 149.1% and 180.3% in soluble protein content in the shoot and roots. In addition, by restricting the absorption of Cr and reducing the synthesis of superoxide dismutase SOD (Superoxide dismutase), CAT (Catalase), POD (Peroxidase), and MDA (Malonaldehyde), it effectively alleviates the oxidative stress on the antioxidant system. Therefore, the exogenous addition of P (0.5 MM) and Se (6.0 MM) prevented the optimal concentration of chromium toxicity to peanuts. Our research provides strong evidence that the exogenous combination of P and Se reduces the risk of peanut poisoning by Cr, while also exploring the optimal concentration of exogenous P and Se under laboratory conditions, providing a basis for further field experiments.

Surface engineering of multifunctional nanostructured adsorbents for enhanced wastewater treatment: A review

Rapid urbanization and industrialization have significantly contributed to the contamination of the environment through the discharge of wastewater containing various pollutants. The development of high-performance surface functional nanostructured adsorbents is of wide interest for researchers. Therefore, we explore the significant advancements in this field, focusing on the efficiency of nanostructured materials, as well as their nanocomposites, for wastewater treatment applications. The crucial role of surface modification in enhancing the affinity of these nanostructured adsorbents towards targeted pollutants, addressing a key bottleneck in the utilization of nanomaterials for wastewater treatment, was specifically emphasized. In addition to highlighting the advantages of surface engineering in enhancing the efficiency of nanostructured adsorbents, this review also provides a comprehensive overview of the limitations and challenges associated with surface-modified nanostructured adsorbents, including high cost, low stability, poor scalability, and potential nanotoxicity. Addressing these limitations is essential for realizing the commercial viability of these state-of-the-art materials for large-scale wastewater treatment applications. This review also thoroughly discusses the potential scalability and environmental safety aspects of surface-modified nanostructured adsorbents, offering insights into their future prospects for wastewater treatment. It is believed that this review will contribute significantly to the existing body of knowledge in the field and provide valuable information for researchers and practitioners working in the area of environmental remediation and nanomaterials.

Exploring the synergistic effect of chromium (Cr) tolerant Pseudomonas aeruginosa and nano zero valent iron (nZVI) for suppressing Cr uptake in Aloe Vera

Chromium (Cr) contamination of soil has substantially deteriorated soil health and has interfered with sustainable agricultural production worldwide and therefore, its remediation is inevitable. Inoculation of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) in association with nanotechnology has exerted broad based impacts in agriculture, and there is an urgent need to exploit their synergism in contaminated soils. Here, we investigated the effect of co-application of Cr-tolerant "Pseudomonas aeruginosa CKQ9" strain and nano zerovalent iron (nZVI) in improving the phytoremediation potential of aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis L.) under Cr contamination. Soil was contaminated by using potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) salt and 15 mg kg-1 contamination level in soil was maintained via spiking and exposure to Cr lasted throughout the duration of the experiment (120 days). We observed that the co-application alleviated the adverse impacts of Cr on aloe vera, and improved various plant attributes such as plant height, root area, number of leaves and gel contents by 51, 137, 67 and 49% respectively as compared to control treatment under Cr contamination. Similarly, significant boost in the activities of various antioxidants including catalase (124%), superoxide dismutase (87%), ascorbate peroxidase (36%), peroxidase (89%) and proline (34%) was pragmatic under contaminated soil conditions. In terms of soil Cr concentration and its plant uptake, co-application of P. aeruginosa and nZVI also reduced available Cr concentration in soil (50%), roots (77%) and leaves (84%), while simultaneously increasing the relative production index by 225% than un-inoculated control. Hence, integrating PGPR with nZVI can be an effective strategy for enhancing the phytoremediation potential of aloe vera.

Formulation of ferric/phosphorus composite coating on coal gangue as a novel fertilizer for enhancing slow-release of silicon and implication of As, Cr and Pb

Owing to the abundant silicon content in coal gangue, its conversion into fertilizer can help address large-scale storage. Nonetheless, the rapid release of silicon in coal gangue poses challenges for plants to fully utilize it. A slow-release fertilizer prepared by ferric/phosphorus composite coating on coal gangue (C@SP) was developed in the study. The findings revealed that the C@SP can facilitate slow release of Si and enhance the stabilization of As, Pb, and Cr in soil. C@SP can react with As and Cr to form stable Fe-As-PO4 and Fe-Cr-PO4 compounds. The -OH in C@SP can combine with Pb, transforming it into insoluble Pb, which was then integrated into the crystal structure with ferric/phosphorus composite or Fe(III)-oxyhydroxysulfate to create a more stable form. The silicon release was promoted by the conversion of the passivation film to iron oxides. Thus, the fertilizer holds promise for application in environmental activities.

Nitric Acid-Treated Blue Coke-Based Activated Carbon's Structural Characteristics and Its Application in Hexavalent Chromium-Containing Wastewater Treatment

This study primarily focused on the efficient transformation of low-priced blue coke powder into a high-capacity adsorbent and aimed to address the pollution issue of hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI))-laden wastewater and to facilitate the effective utilization of blue coke powder. A two-step method was utilized to fabricate a blue coke-based nitric acid-modified material (LCN), and the impact of nitric acid modification on the material's structure and its efficacy in treating Cr (VI)-contaminated wastewater was evaluated. Our experimental results illustrated that, under identical conditions, LCN exhibited superior performance for Cr (VI) treatment compared to the method employing only potassium hydroxide (LCK). The specific surface area and pore volume of LCN were 1.39 and 1.36 times greater than those of LCK, respectively. Further chemical composition analysis revealed that the functional group structure on the LCN surface was more conducive to Cr (VI) adsorption. The highest amount of Cr (VI) that LCN could bind was measured at 181.962 mg/g at 318 K. This was mostly due to chemisorption, which is dominated by redox reactions. The Cr (VI) removal process by LCN was identified to be a spontaneous, exothermic, and entropy-increasing process. Several tests on recycling and reuse showed that LCN is a stable and effective chromium-containing wastewater adsorbent, showing that it could be used in many situations.
