Distribution of microplastic contamination in the major tributaries of the Yellow River on the Loess Plateau

Spatiotemporal response of microplastics to natural and anthropogenic factors in estuarine waters

Riverine outflow is the primary pathway for transporting microplastics from terrestrial to marine environments, making estuaries hotspots for microplastics pollution. However, how and to what extent natural and anthropogenic factors affect the distribution of microplastics in estuarine waters remains largely unknown. A meta-analysis of 126 estuaries from 93 studies revealed a global median microplastics abundance of 196.9 items/m3, with a range from 0.007 ± 0.003 to 792,000 ± 138,000 items/m3. Microplastics were more abundant in estuaries in Asia and Oceania compared to Europe and South America. The microplastic abundance in estuarine waters was positively correlated with regional population density, per capita plastic waste, agricultural land proportion, and silt content, while the human development index (HDI) and mean annual precipitation displayed negative effects on microplastic abundance. Notably, HDI was the dominant factor influencing microplastic abundance in estuarine waters. In developing countries, microplastic abundance in estuarine waters showed positive changes, whereas it remained stable in developed countries over time. This study offers critical insights into the effects of natural and anthropogenic factors on the distribution patterns of microplastics in estuarine waters, providing important support for future management of microplastics pollution in estuaries.

Microplastic characterization in small freshwater fishes collected in Gyeongan-cheon, a tributary stream of Han River in South Korea: Ingestion and depuration study of Nylon

Plastic inventions have had an impact on various industries, and people easily approach to plastic products, degrading into microplastic (MP). In this study, distribution of MP was evaluated in freshwater fishes collected in a tributary stream of the Han River, Gyeongan-cheon. Totally 38 fishes, mostly Zacco platypus, were used to analyze, and they were collected in two different seasons as the normal and rainy seasons. Fishes contained 34-284 particles/individual. The prevalent size of MP in fishes ranged from 45 to 100 μm, followed by 100-300 and 20-45 μm. Shapes of MP in fishes were mostly fragments, and types of MP were polypropylene (PP) > polyethylene (PE) > polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). By 4-day ingestion of Nylon at 100 μg/L (equivalent to 55,000 particles/L, about 20-40 μm) in Zacco koreanus, the treated fish showed MP concentration with an average number of 53 Nylons. Mean retention time value was considered as 13.4 days by the uptake-depuration test using Z. platypus at 500 μg/L Nylon. Taken together, MP concentration found in smaller freshwater fish was dependent on living habitat and MP size. These findings underscore the importance of ongoing monitoring of MPs in freshwater ecosystems and the need to understand MP ingestion and excretion patterns in small freshwater fish species.

Heterogenization of microplastic communities in lakes of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau driven by tourism and transport activities

The Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau has a booming tourism industry and an increasingly sophisticated road system. There is a paucity of studies quantifying the contributions of anthropogenic and natural factors to microplastic pollution in remote plateau areas. In this study, water and sediment samples were collected from eight lake tourist attractions and four remote lakes in northern and southern regions of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Microplastics were detected in all samples, with a mean abundance of 0.78 items/L in water and 44.98 items/kg in sediment. The abundance of microplastics in the study area was lower than previously observed in more populated areas of China. Small-sized (<1 mm and 1-2 mm), fiber, and transparent microplastics were predominant, with polyethylene and polypropylene microplastics as the primary polymer types. The compositions of microplastic communities indicated that tourism and road networks were the major sources of microplastics in the lakes. Distance-decay models revealed greater influence of environmental distances on microplastic community similarity than geographic distance. Compared to climate factors, urban spatial impact intensity and traffic flow impact played a leading role in the structuring of microplastic communities in lake water and sediment. Our findings provide novel quantitative insights into the role of various factors in shaping the distribution patterns of microplastic communities in plateau lakes.

Dynamics of microplastic abundance under tidal fluctuation in Musi estuary, Indonesia

Tidal dynamics contribute to fluctuations in microplastic abundance (MPs). This is the first study to characterize MPs under the influence of tidal fluctuations in the Musi River Estuary. MPs samples were collected during flood and ebb tides at 10 research stations representing the inner, middle and outer parts of the Musi River Estuary. MPs were extracted to identify the shape, color and size. MP abundances were 467.67 ± 127.84 particles/m3 during flood tide and 723.67 ± 112.05 particles/m3 during ebb tide. The concentration of MPs in the outer zone of the estuary (ocean) was detected to be higher than in the inner zone of the estuary (river). The MPs found were dominated by black color, film shape and size 101-250 μm. A greater abundance of MPs at ebb tide than at flood tide implies that the Musi Estuary's largest source of emissions is discharge from the river.

Effects of landscape pattern on water quality at multi-spatial scales in Wuding River Basin, China

Urbanization and agricultural land use have led to water quality deterioration. Studies have been conducted on the relationship between landscape patterns and river water quality; however, the Wuding River Basin (WDRB), which is a complex ecosystem structure, is facing resource problems in river basins. Thus, the multi-scale effects of landscape patterns on river water quality in the WDRB must be quantified. This study explored the spatial and seasonal effects of land use distribution on river water quality. Using the data of 22 samples and land use images from the WDRB for 2022, we quantitatively described the correlation between river water quality and land use at spatial and seasonal scales. Stepwise multiple linear regression (SMLR) and redundancy analyses (RDA) were used to quantitatively screen and compare the relationships between land use structure, landscape patterns, and water quality at different spatial scales. The results showed that the sub-watershed scale is the best spatial scale model that explains the relationship between land use and water quality. With the gradual narrowing of the spatial scale range, cultivated land, grassland, and construction land had strong water quality interpretation abilities. The influence of land use type on water quality parameter variables was more distinct in rainy season than in the dry season. Therefore, in the layout of watershed management, reasonably adjusting the proportion relationship of vegetation and artificial building land in the sub-basin scale and basin scope can realize the effective control of water quality optimization.
