From Molecular Design to Practical Applications: Strategies for Enhancing the Optical and Thermal Performance of Polyimide Films

Polyimide (PI) films are well recognized for their outstanding chemical resistance, radiation resistance, thermal properties, and mechanical strength, rendering them highly valuable in advanced fields such as aerospace, sophisticated electronic components, and semiconductors. However, improving their optical transparency while maintaining excellent thermal properties remains a significant challenge. This review systematically checks over recent advancements in enhancing the optical and thermal performance of PI films, focusing on various strategies through molecular design. These strategies include optimizing the main chain, side chain, non-coplanar structures, and endcap groups. Rigid and flexible structural characteristics in the proper combination can contribute to the balance thermal stability and optical transparency. Introducing fluorinated substituents and bulky side groups significantly reduces the formation of charge transfer complexes, enhancing both transparency and thermal properties. Non-coplanar structures, such as spiro and cardo configurations, further improve the optical properties while maintaining thermal stability. Future research trends include nanoparticle doping, intrinsic microporous PI polymers, photosensitive polyimides, machine learning-assisted molecular design, and metal coating techniques, which are expected to further enhance the comprehensive optical and thermal performance of PI films and expand their applications in flexible displays, solar cells, and high-performance electronic devices. Overall, systematic molecular design and optimization have significantly improved the optical and thermal performance of PI films, showing broad application prospects. This review aims to provide researchers with valuable references, stimulate more innovative research and applications, and promote the deep integration of PI films into modern technology and industry.

Novel Bio-Based Materials: From Castor Oil to Epoxy Resins for Engineering Applications

The paper presents the synthesis and thermal behavior of novel epoxy resins prepared from epoxidized castor oil in the presence of or without trimethylolpropane triglycidyl ether (TMP) crosslinked with 3-hexahydro-4-methylphtalic anhydride (MHHPA) and their comparison with a petroleum-based epoxy resin (MHHPA and TMP). Epoxidized castor oil (ECO) was obtained via in situ epoxidation of castor oil with peroxyacetic acid. The chemical structures of castor oil (CO), ECO, and epoxy matrix were confirmed using FT-IR and 1H-NMR spectroscopy. The morphological and thermal behavior of the resulting products have been investigated. Compared to petroleum-based resins, castor oil-based ones have a lower Tg. Anyway, the introduction of TMP increases the Tg of the resins containing ECO. The morphological behavior is not significantly influenced by using ECO or by adding TMP in the synthesis of resins. The dielectric properties of epoxy resins have been analyzed as a function of frequency (1 kHz-1 MHz) and temperature (-50 to 200 °C). The water absorption test showed that as Tg increased, the percent mass of water ingress decreased.

Testing the Performance of the Azo-Polyimide Supramolecular Systems as Substrate for Sensors Based on Platinum Electrodes

Azo-polyimide films with supramolecular structure were obtained by casting onto glass plates a mixture based on polyamidic acid and different quantities of azochromophore, followed by thermal treatment to realize the final azo-polyimide structure. The dielectric characteristics of the supramolecular structure of polymer films were investigated by broad-band dielectric spectroscopy measurements at different temperatures and frequencies. The free-standing films proved to be flexible and tough and maintained their integrity after repeated bending. The work of adhesion at the polymer/platinum interface was calculated after the evaluation of the surface energy parameters before and after plasma treatment. Atomic force microscopy was used to image the surface morphology, the evolution of the roughness parameters, and the adhesion force between the platinum-covered tip and the polymer surface, registered at the nanoscale with the quantity of the azo dye introduced in the system. The simulation of the columnar growth of a platinum layer was made to provide information about the deposition parameters that should be used for optimal results in the deposition of platinum electrodes for sensors.

Thermal and Dielectric Investigations of Polystyrene Nanoparticles as a Viable Platform-Toward the Next Generation of Fillers for Nanocomposites

Nanoparticles are often used as fillers for enhancing various properties of polymer composites such as mechanical, electrical, or dielectric. Among them, polymer nanoparticles are considered ideal contenders because of their compatibility with a polymer matrix. For this reason, it is important that they are synthesized in a surfactant-free form, to obtain predictable surface and structural properties. Here, we synthesized a series of polystyrene nanoparticles (PS NPs), by emulsion polymerization of styrene, using varying amounts of divinylbenzene as a crosslinking agent and sodium 4-vinylbenzenesulfonate as a copolymerizing monomer surfactant-"surfmer". Using "surfmers" we obtained surfactant-free nanoparticles that are monodisperse, with a high degree of thermal stability, as observed by scanning electron microscopy and thermogravimetric investigations. The prepared series of NPs were investigated by means of broadband dielectric spectroscopy and we demonstrate that by fine-tuning their chemical composition, fine changes in their dielectric and thermal properties are obtained. Further, we demonstrate that the physical transformations in the nanoparticles, such as the glass transition, can be predicted by performing the first derivative of dielectric permittivity for all investigated samples. The glass transition temperature of PS NPs appears to be inversely correlated with the dielectric permittivity and the average diameter of NPs.

Fabrication, Facilitating Gas Permeability, and Molecular Simulations of Porous Hypercrosslinked Polymers Embedding 6FDA-Based Polyimide Mixed-Matrix Membranes

Novel polymers applied in economic membrane technologies are a perennial hot topic in the fields of natural gas purification and O₂ enrichment. Herein, novel hypercrosslinked polymers (HCPs) incorporating 6FDA-based polyimide (PI) MMMs were prepared via a casting method for enhancing transport of different gases (CO₂, CH₄, O₂, and N₂). Intact HCPs/PI MMMs could be obtained due to good compatibility between the HCPs and PI. Pure gas permeation experiments showed that compared with pure PI film, the addition of HCPs effectively promotes gas transport, increases gas permeability, and maintains ideal selectivity. The permeabilities of HCPs/PI MMMs toward CO₂ and O₂ were as high as 105.85 Barrer and 24.03 Barrer, respectively, and the ideal selectivities of CO₂/CH₄ and O₂/N₂ were 15.67 and 3.00, respectively. Molecular simulations further verified that adding HCPs was beneficial to gas transport. Thus, HCPs have potential utility in fabrication of MMMs for facilitating gas transport in the fields of natural gas purification and O₂ enrichment.

Cobalt Ferrite/Polyetherimide Composites as Thermally Stable Materials for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Uses

The progress of the automated industry has introduced many benefits in our daily life, but it also produces undesired electromagnetic interference (EMI) that distresses the end-users and functionality of electronic devices. This article develops new composites based on a polyetherimide (PEI) matrix and cobalt ferrite (CoFe₂O₄) nanofiller (10-50 wt%) by mixing inorganic phase in the poly(amic acid) solution, followed by film casting and controlled heating, to acquire the corresponding imide structure. The composites were designed to contain both electric and magnetic dipole sources by including highly polarizable groups (phenyls, ethers, -CN) in the PEI structure and by loading this matrix with magnetic nanoparticles, respectively. The films exhibited high thermal stability, having the temperature at which decomposition begins in the interval of 450-487 °C. Magnetic analyses indicated a saturation magnetization, coercitive force, and magnetic remanence of 27.9 emu g^-1, 705 Oe, and 9.57 emu g^-1, respectively, for the PEI/CoFe₂O₄ 50 wt%. Electrical measurements evidenced an increase in the conductivity from 4.42 10^-9 S/cm for the neat PEI to 1.70 10^-8 S/cm for PEI/CoFe₂O₄ 50 wt% at 1 MHz. The subglass γ- and β-relaxations, primary relaxation, and conductivity relaxation were also examined depending on the nanofiller content. These novel composites are investigated from the point of view of their EMI shielding properties, showing that they are capable of attenuating the electric and magnetic parts of electromagnetic waves.

Progress on Polymers Containing Imide Rings for Advanced Technologies: A Contribution from ICMPP of the Romanian Academy

Evolving technology has posed a constantly increasing need for materials that can work well under harsh conditions such as elevated temperatures. Aromatic polyimides have a great potential for this purpose, having excellent thermal, mechanical, dielectric, and optical properties, along with good chemical resistance and high dimensional stability. In spite of their general difficulty in processing and high cost, polyimides are intensively studied for applications in many areas due to their high-end value. This article reviews the progress made on polyimide materials in the “Petru Poni” Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry (ICMPP) of the Romanian Academy during the last decade, with focus on their performance as films, matrices for nanocomposites, coatings for microelectronics and opto-electronic devices, or dielectrics for thin film capacitors.

Synthesis and enhanced CO2/CH4 selectivity of hyperbranched copolyimide membranes

A series of hyperbranched copolyimides (co-HBPIs), as the completely symmetrical tetraamine monomer successfully incorporated into the linear polyimide 6FDA-ODA, were synthesized under the chemical imidization after the gel formation was avoided, as to more effectively separate CO2/CH4. CO2/CH4 selectivity (74%) was observed to be improved significantly under 7‰ tetraamine contents at 2 bar and 35°C; thus, the acceptable CO2 permeability was maintained compared with the pure membrane, exceeding the 1991 upper bound. Moreover, the as-prepared membrane with 6FDA-ODA-7‰ was reported to exhibit higher CO2/CH4 selectivity (109.14) at 10 bar and 35°C. Accordingly, the hyperbranched copolyimides will be promising candidates as membrane materials for the further separation of CO2/CH4 gas pair.

Structural Evolution of Macromolecular Chain During Pre-imidization Process and Its Effects on Polyimide Film Properties

Pre-imidization has been found to have a determining role on the final properties of polyimide (PI) films. In this work, a series of 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA)/2,2'-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzidine (TFMB) PI models with specified pre-imidization degree (pre-ID) were constructed and analyzed on the basis of molecular dynamic (MD) simulation to reveal the real-time evolution of structure and properties that occurred during the pre-imidization process. The MD results indicated that the T_g of the models increased obviously with increasing pre-ID, which corresponded to the increase of rigid PI chain segments that restricted the mobility of molecular chains. In addition, the increase of fractional free volume and mean square end-to-end distance indicated looser chain packing and more extended chain conformation during the pre-imidization process. As a further verification, a series of corresponding PI films were experimentally prepared via a controlled partially pre-imidization process. Mechanical properties of the prepared PI films were tested to be significantly enhanced, and the coefficient of thermal expansion decreased from 61.5 to 47.6 ppm/°C with pre-ID increasing from 0% to 100%, which could be attributed to the orderly molecular chain arrangement formed during the chemical pre-imidization process, as disclosed by MD simulation. This work paves the way for the observation of the real-time structure and property evolutions of PI materials, especially during the pre-imidization process.
