Surface modified cellulose acetate membranes for the reactive retention of tetracycline

Cellulose acetate scaffold coated with a hydroxyapatite/graphene oxide nanocomposite for application in tissue engineering

The objective of this study was to synthesize and characterize porous Cellulose Acetate (CA) scaffolds using the electrospinning technique and functionalize the surface of the scaffolds obtained through the dip-coating method with a Hydroxyapatite (HA) nanocomposite and varying concentrations of graphene oxide (GO) for application in tissue engineering regeneration techniques. The scaffolds were divided into four distinct groups based on their composition: 1) CA scaffolds; 2) CAHAC scaffolds; 3) CAHAGOC 1.0% scaffolds; 4) CAHAGOC 1.5% scaffolds. Scaffold analyses were conducted using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), and in vitro cell viability assays (WST). For the biological test analysis, Variance (two-way) was used, followed by Tukey's post-test (α = 0.05). The XRD results revealed the predominant presence of CaP phases in the CAHAC, CAHAGOC 1.0%, and CAHAGOC 1.5% groups, emphasizing the presence of HA in the scaffolds. FTIR demonstrated characteristics of cellulose and PO4 bands in the groups containing HA, confirming the presence of CaP in the synthesized materials, as also indicated by XRD. Raman spectroscopy showed the presence of D and G bands, consistent with GO, confirming the successful incorporation of the HAGO nanocomposite into the scaffolds. The micrographs displayed overlapping electrospun fibers, forming the three-dimensional structure in the produced scaffolds. It was possible to observe hydroxyapatite crystals filling some of these pores, creating a suitable structure for cell adhesion, proliferation, and nutrition, as corroborated by the results of in vitro tests. All scaffolds exhibited high cell viability, with significant cell proliferation. Even after 48 h, there was a slight reduction in the number of cells, but a noteworthy increase in cell proliferation was evident in the CAHAGOC 1.5% group after 48 h (p < 0.05). In conclusion, it can be affirmed that the produced scaffolds demonstrated physical and biological characteristics and properties capable of promoting cell adhesion and proliferation. Therefore, they represent significant potential for application in tissue engineering, offering a new perspective regarding techniques and biomaterials applied in regenerative therapies.

Preparation of Activated Biocarbons from Cones and their Potential Application for Adsorption of Antibiotics (Tetracycline)

The pine cones (PC), spruce cones (SC) and fir cones (FC) were used for biocarbons preparation. Chemical activation with sodium hydroxide was applied to prepare activated biocarbons. All the materials under investigation were characterized by the N2 adsorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), elemental analysis (CHNS), infrared spectroscopy (ATR FT-IR), and the Boehm's titration method. Moreover, pHpzc (the point of zero charge) was determined. It was shown that cones are a good, cheap precursor from which biocarbons with a developed porous structure, characterized by good adsorption properties, can be obtained. All the obtained adsorbents are characterized mainly by a microporous structure. Moreover, they contain both acidic and basic surface functional groups (acidic ones prevail over basic ones). The tested activated biocarbons have large specific surface area values ranging from 578 to 1182 m2 g-1. The efficacy of selected materials in the adsorption of an essential contaminant of increasing concern, tetracycline (TC), was investigated. The experimental data were described using the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models. The maximum adsorption capacity of the tested biocarbons ranges from 200 to 392 mg g-1. Thermodynamic studies proved that adsorption is a spontaneous and endothermic process. In summary, economical and environmentally friendly adsorbents were obtained.

Robust CA-GO-TiO2/PTFE Photocatalytic Membranes for the Degradation of the Azithromycin Formulation from Wastewaters

We have developed an innovative thin-film nanocomposite membrane that contains cellulose acetate (CA) with small amounts of TiO2-decorated graphene oxide (GO) (ranging from 0.5 wt.% to 2 wt.%) sandwiched between two polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-like thin films. The PTFE-like films succeeded in maintaining the bulk porosity of the support while increasing the thermal and chemical robustness of the membrane and boosting the catalytic activity of TiO2 nanoparticles. The membranes exhibited a specific chemical composition and bonding, with predominant carbon-oxygen bonds from CA and GO in the bulk, and carbon-fluorine bonds on their PTFE-like coated sides. We have also tested the membranes' photocatalytic activities on azithromycin-containing wastewaters, demonstrating excellent efficiency with more than 80% degradation for 2 wt.% TiO2-decorated GO in the CA-GO-TiO2/PTFE-like membranes. The degradation of the azithromycin formulation occurs in two steps, with reaction rates being correlated to the amount of GO-TiO2 in the membranes.

Photopolymerization Pattern of New Methacrylate Cellulose Acetate Derivatives

Polymeric photocrosslinked networks, of particular interest in the design of materials with targeted characteristics, can be easily prepared by grafting light-sensitive moieties, such as methacrylates, on polymeric chains and, after photochemical reactions, provide materials with multiple applications via photopolymerization. In this work, photopolymerizable urethane-methacrylate sequences were attached to free hydroxyl units of cellulose acetate chains in various proportions (functionalization degree from 5 to 100%) to study the properties of the resulting macromolecules and the influence of the cellulosic material structure on the double bond conversion degree. Additionally, to manipulate the properties of the photocured systems, the methacrylate-functionalized cellulose acetate derivatives were mixed with low molecular weight dimethacrylate derivatives (containing castor oil and polypropylene glycol flexible chains), and the influence of UV-curable composition on the photopolymerization parameters being studied. The achieved data reveal that the addition of dimethacrylate comonomers augmented the polymerization rates and conversion degrees, leading to polymer networks with various microstructures.

Efficiently catalytic degradation of tetracycline via persulfate activation with plant-based biochars: Insight into endogenous mineral self-template effect and pyrolysis catalysis

Endogenous mineral of plant such as potassium, calcium and iron may play a crucial role in boosting the physicochemical structure and catalytic activity of high temperature pyrolyzed plant-based biochar while it is often neglected owing to its relative less content. Herein, self-template pyrolyzed plant-based biochars were prepared from two different ash-contained agricultural wastes of peanut hull (PH, 3.2% ash) and cotton straw (CS, 0.8% ash), and aimed at investigating the relationship among the endogenous mineral fractions of plant-based biomass, physicochemical active structure and persulfate (PS) catalytic degradation activity for tetracycline (TC). The results of energy/spectral characterization showed that under the self-template effect and pyrolysis catalysis of endogenous minerals, PH biochar (PBC) possessed much more specific surface area, conjugated graphite domain, C=O and pyrrolic-N surface active functional sites than CS biochar (CBC), enhancing TC removal rate of PBC/PS to 88.37%, twice that of CBC/PS (44.16%). Meanwhile, reactive oxygen quenching and electrochemical experiments showed that electrons transfer and non-free radical pathways based on singlet oxygen contributed 92% of TC removal in PBC/PS system. Remarkably, by comparing the differences in structure and TC removal performance of pre-deashing and non-deashing prepared plant-based biochars, a possible mechanism for endogenous mineral components' self-template effect and pyrolysis catalysis role of plant-based biomass was proposed. This study provides a new insight for revealing the intrinsic mechanism of mineral elements enhancing the active surface structures and catalytic properties of plant-based biochars derived from distinct feedstocks.

High-performance functional cellulose foam fabricated with theoretically optimized imidazolium salts for the efficient removal of ciprofloxacin

With the increasing requirements for sustainable development and environmental protection, the design and development of bio-adsorbent based on the widely sourced cellulose have attracted widespread attention. In this study, a polymeric imidazolium satls (PIMS) functionalized cellulose foam (CF@PIMS) was conveniently fabricated. It was then employed to efficiently remove ciprofloxacin (CIP). Three imidazolium salts containing phenyl groups that can lead to multiple interactions with CIP were elaborately designed and then screened through a combination of molecular simulation and removal experiments to acquire the most significant binding ability of CF@PIMS. Besides, the CF@PIMS retained the well-defined 3D network structure as well as high porosity (90.3 %) and total intrusion volume (6.05 mL g^-1) as the original cellulose foam (CF). Therefore, the adsorption capacity of CF@PIMS reached an astonishing value of 736.9 mg g^-1, nearly 10 times that of the CF. Furthermore, the pH-affected and ionic strength-affected adsorption experiments confirmed that the non-electrostatic interaction took on a critical significance in the adsorption. The reusability experiments showed that the recovery efficiency of CF@PIMS was higher than 75 % after 10 adsorption cycles. Thus, a high-potential method was proposed in terms of the design and preparation of functionalized bio-adsorbent to remove waste matters from samples of the environment.

Application of cellulose to chromatographic media: Cellulose dissolution, and media fabrication and derivatization

As the cornerstone of chromatographic technology, the development of high-performance chromatographic media is a crucial means to enhance the purification efficiency of biological macromolecules. Cellulose is a popular biological separation medium due to its abundant hydroxyl group on the surface, easy modification and, weak non-specific adsorption. In this paper, the development of cellulosic solvent systems, typical preparation methods of cellulosic chromatographic media, and the enhancement of chromatographic properties of cellulosic chromatographic media by polymeric ligand grafting strategies and their mechanism of action are reviewed. Ultimately, based on the current research status, a promising outlook for the preparation of high-performance cellulose-based chromatographic media was presented.

Pyrolysis temperature affects the physiochemical characteristics of lanthanum-modified biochar derived from orange peels: Insights into the mechanisms of tetracycline adsorption by spectroscopic analysis and theoretical calculations

Biochar (BC) derived from orange peels was modified using LaCl₃ to enhance its tetracycline (TC) adsorption capacity. SEM-EDS, FT-IR, XRD, and BET were used to characterize the physiochemical characteristics of La-modified biochar (La-BC). Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of several variables like pyrolysis temperature, adsorbent dosage, initial pH, and coexisting ions on the adsorption of TC by La-BC. XPS and density functional theory (DFT) were used to elucidate the TC adsorption mechanism of La-BC. The results demonstrated that La was uniformly coated on the surface of the La-BC. The physiochemical characteristics of La-BC highly depended on pyrolysis temperature. Higher temperature increased the specific surface area and functional groups of La-BC, thus enhancing its TC adsorption capacity. La-BC prepared at 700 °C (BC@La-700) achieved the maximum adsorption capacity of 143.20 mg/g, which was 6.8 and 4.6 times higher than that of BC@La-500 and BC@La-600, respectively. The mechanisms of TC adsorption by La-BC were most accurately described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Furthermore, the adsorption isotherm of La-BC was consistent with the Freundlich model. BC@La-700 achieved good TC adsorption efficiencies even at a wide pH range (pH 4-10). Humic acid significantly inhibited TC adsorption by La-BC. The presence of coexisting ions (NH₄⁺, Ca²⁺, NO₃^-) did not significantly affect the adsorption capacity of La-BC, particularly BC@La-700. Moreover, BC@La-700 also exhibited the best recycling performance, which achieved relative high adsorption capacity even after 5 cycles. The XPS results showed that π-π bonds, oxygen-containing functional groups, and La played a major role in the adsorption of TC on La-BC. The result of DFT showed that the adsorption energy of La-BC was the greatest than that of other functional groups on biochar. Collectively, our findings provide a theoretical basis for the development of La-BC based materials to remove TC from wastewater.

Crown ether-functionalized cellulose acetate membranes with potential applications in osseointegration

Due to its inherent properties and wide availability, cellulose acetate is an extremely competitive candidate for the production of polymeric membranes. However, for best results in particular applications, membrane modification is required in order to minimize unwanted interactions and introduce novel characteristics to the pristine polymer. In this study, the surface of commercial cellulose acetate membranes was functionalized with 4'-aminobenzo-15-crown-5 ether, using a covalent bonding approach. The main goal was the improvement of the membranes biomineralization ability, thus making them prospective materials for bone regeneration applications. The proposed reaction mechanism was confirmed by XPS and NMR analysis while the presence of the functionalization agents in the membranes structure was showed by ATR FT-IR and Raman spectra. The effects of the functionalization process on the morphology, thermal and mechanical properties of the membranes were studied by SEM, TGA and tensile tests. The obtained results revealed that the cellulose acetate membranes were successfully functionalized with crown ether and provided a good understanding of the interactions that took place between the polymer and the functionalization agents. Moreover, promising results were obtained during the Taguchi biomineralization studies. SEM images, EDX mapping and XRD spectra indicating that the CA-AB15C5 membranes have a superior Ca²⁺ ions retention ability, this causing an accentuated calcium phosphate deposition on the modified polymeric fibers, compared to the neat CA membrane.

Design of a biomimetic cellulose nanofibre-based double information encryption sensor for fingerprint imaging

The development of double encryption system enables information to switch reversibly between "False" and "True", which helps to ensure information security in the transmission process. Herein, a biomimetic cellulose nanofibre-based double information encryption sensor (CNF-DIES) with an excellent pH response and fluorescence colour-switching performance was prepared with fluorescein isothiocyanate and protoporphyrin IX modified acetylated cellulose nanofibres (ACNF) as the pH response switch and background, respectively. Interestingly, with the addition of cellulose, CNF-DIES can be regarded as both a dye and an ink binder, which can realize direct writing function. The fluorescein grafted to ACNF guaranteed the stability of writing and avoided the "coffee ring" phenomenon. The handwriting written by CNF-DIES processes excellent light/pH double encryption performance. Besides, the film prepared by CNF-DIES can realize high resolution fingerprint imaging. This work demonstrated a strategy for pH-responsive colour-tunable materials for sensors and double information encryption.

Preparation and Characterization of Chitosan/LDH Composite Membranes for Drug Delivery Application

In this study, composite membranes based on chitosan (CS), layered double hydroxide (LDH), and diclofenac were prepared via dispersing of LDH and diclofenac (DCF) in the chitosan matrix for gradual delivery of diclofenac sodium. The effect of using LDH in composites was compared to chitosan loaded with diclofenac membrane. LDH was added in order to develop a system with a long release of diclofenac sodium, which is used in inflammatory conditions as an anti-inflammatory drug. The prepared composite membranes were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Scanning Electron Microscope Analysis (SEM), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and UV-Vis Spectroscopy. The results of the FTIR and XPS analyses confirmed the obtaining of the composite membrane and the efficient incorporation of diclofenac. It was observed that the addition of LDH can increase the thermal stability of the composite membrane and favors the gradual release of diclofenac, highlighted by UV-Vis spectra that showed a gradual release in the first 48 h. In conclusion, the composite membrane based on CS-LDH can be used in potential drug delivery application.

Polymeric Membranes for Biomedical Applications

Polymeric membranes are selective materials used in a wide range of applications that require separation processes, from water filtration and purification to industrial separations. Because of these materials' remarkable properties, namely, selectivity, membranes are also used in a wide range of biomedical applications that require separations. Considering the fact that most organs (apart from the heart and brain) have separation processes associated with the physiological function (kidneys, lungs, intestines, stomach, etc.), technological solutions have been developed to replace the function of these organs with the help of polymer membranes. This review presents the main biomedical applications of polymer membranes, such as hemodialysis (for chronic kidney disease), membrane-based artificial oxygenators (for artificial lung), artificial liver, artificial pancreas, and membranes for osseointegration and drug delivery systems based on membranes.

Enhanced adsorption capacity of tetracycline on porous graphitic biochar with an ultra-large surface area†

Excessive tetracycline in the water environment may lead to the harming of human and ecosystem health. Removing tetracycline antibiotics from aqueous solution is currently a most urgent issue. Porous graphitic biochar with an ultra-large surface area was successfully prepared by a one-step method. The effects of activation temperature, activation time, and activator dosage on the structural changes of biochar were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, X-ray powder diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. The effect of the structure change, adsorption time, temperature, initial pH, and co-existing ions on the tetracycline removal efficiency was also investigated. The results show that temperature had the most potent effect on the specific surface area, pore structure, and extent of graphitization. The ultra-large surface area and pore structure of biochar are critical to the removal of tetracycline. The q_e of porous graphitic biochar could reach 1122.2 mg g⁻¹ at room temperature. The calculations of density functional theory indicate that π–π stacking interaction and p–π stacking interaction can enhance the tetracycline adsorption on the ultra-large surface area of graphitic biochar.

Porous activated carbons derived from bamboo pulp black liquor for effective adsorption removal of tetracycline hydrochloride and malachite green from water

As a kind of wastewater produced by papermaking industry, bamboo pulp black liquor (BPBL) discharged into water causes serious environmental problems. In this work, BPBL was successfully converted into porous carbon after activation with potassium hydroxide (KOH) through one-step carbonization, and adsorption properties of porous carbon derived from bamboo pulp black liquor (BLPC) for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) and malachite green (MG) were studied. The adsorption capacities of BLPC for TCH and MG are 1047 and 1277 mg/g, respectively, due to its large specific surface area of 1859.08 m²/g. Kinetics and isotherm data are well fitted to the pseudo-second-order rate model and Langmuir model, respectively. Adsorption experiments and characterizations reveal that the adsorption mechanism involved in TCH and MG adsorption on BLPC mainly depends on the synergistic effect of pore filling, H-bonding, π-π interactions and weak electrostatic interactions. In addition, BLPC shows excellent photothermal properties, and the adsorption capacity of TCH and MG on BLPC can reach 584 and 847 mg/g under the irradiation of near infrared lamp for 50 min, respectively. The synthesized BLPC with high adsorption efficiency, good recovery ability, improved adsorption under near-infrared irradiation can be a promising and effective adsorbent for TCH or MG or other pollutes.

The Use of Graphene and Its Derivatives for the Development of Polymer Matrix Composites by Stereolithographic 3D Printing

Significant advances in graphene-based materials have facilitated the development of various composites structures in a diverse range of industry sectors. At present, the preparation of graphene-added materials is mainly developed through traditional methods. However, in recent years, additive manufacturing emerged as a promising approach that enables the printing of complex objects in a layer-by-layer fashion, without the need for moulds or machining equipment. This paper reviews the most recent reports on graphene-based photopolymerizable resins developed for stereolithography (SLA), with particular consideration for medical applications. The characteristics of the SLA technology, the most suitable raw materials and formulations and the properties of final 3D products are described. Throughout, a specific focus is placed on the mechanical properties and biocompatibility of the final 3D-printed object. Finally, remaining challenges and future directions are also discussed.

Functionalized Hemodialysis Polysulfone Membranes with Improved Hemocompatibility

The field of membrane materials is one of the most dynamic due to the continuously changing requirements regarding the selectivity and the upgradation of the materials developed with the constantly changing needs. Two membrane processes are essential at present, not for development, but for everyday life—desalination and hemodialysis. Hemodialysis has preserved life and increased life expectancy over the past 60–70 years for tens of millions of people with chronic kidney dysfunction. In addition to the challenges related to the efficiency and separative properties of the membranes, the biggest challenge remained and still remains the assurance of hemocompatibility—not affecting the blood during its recirculation outside the body for 4 h once every two days. This review presents the latest research carried out in the field of functionalization of polysulfone membranes (the most used polymer in the preparation of membranes for hemodialysis) with the purpose of increasing the hemocompatibility and efficiency of the separation process itself with a decreasing impact on the body.

An efficient, green and sustainable potassium hydroxide activated magnetic corn cob biochar for imidacloprid removal

The extensive use of imidacloprid (IMI) has led to its being frequently detected in natural water, also caused the potential damage to the ecosystem. Development of efficient, green and sustainable technique is demanded to eliminate this problem. A novel biochar (KMCBC) derived from agriculture waste of corn cob was first time co-modified by potassium hydroxide (KOH), ferric chloride (FeCl₃) and zinc chloride (ZnCl₂), which showed the greater adsorption amount (410 mg g^-1 at 298 K) for imidacloprid (IMI). Pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models fitted well with the experimental data, together with the physicochemical characterization analysis, demonstrating that the adsorption process of IMI by KMCBC might be mainly controlled by micropore filling, π-π electron donor-acceptor and functional groups interactions (H-bonding and complexation). Additionally, the thermodynamics parameters suggested that IMI adsorption in this study was a spontaneous, endothermic and randomly increasing process. Besides, KMCBC owned the easy separation performance and promising environmental safety, also exhibited a high selective adsorption capacity regardless of solution pH (its optimum adsorption performance for IMI was obtained at pH = 5), inorganic ions strength and humic acid (HA) concentrations. The regenerated KMCBC (synergistic ultrasound/ethanol) could sustainably and efficiently adsorb IMI in the reuse cycles. Therefore, this study provided an efficient, green and sustainable adsorbent of KMCBC for IMI removal.

A Real-Life Reproducibility Assessment for NMR Metabolomics

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) metabolomics is currently popular enough to attract both specialized and non-specialized NMR groups involving both analytical trained personnel and newcomers, including undergraduate students. Recent interlaboratory studies performed by established NMR metabolomics groups demonstrated high reproducibility of the state-of-the-art NMR equipment and SOPs. There is, however, no assessment of NMR reproducibility when mixing both analytical experts and newcomers. An interlaboratory assessment of NMR quantitation reproducibility was performed using two NMR instruments belonging to different laboratories and involving several operators with different backgrounds and metabolomics expertise for the purpose of assessing the limiting factors for data reproducibility in a multipurpose NMR environment. The variability induced by the operator, automatic pipettes, NMR tubes and NMR instruments was evaluated in order to assess the limiting factors for quantitation reproducibility. The results estimated the expected reproducibility data in a real-life multipurpose NMR laboratory to a maximum 4% variability, demonstrating that the current NMR equipment and SOPs may compensate some of the operator-induced variability.

A Novel Generation of Polysulfone/Crown Ether-Functionalized Reduced Graphene Oxide Membranes with Potential Applications in Hemodialysis

Heavy metal poisoning is a rare health condition caused by the accumulation of toxic metal ions in the soft tissues of the human body that can be life threatening if left untreated. In the case of severe intoxications, hemodialysis is the most effective method for a rapid clearance of the metal ions from the bloodstream, therefore, the development of hemodialysis membranes with superior metal ions retention ability is of great research interest. In the present study, synthetic polysulfone membranes were modified with reduced graphene oxide functionalized with crown ether, an organic compound with high metal ions complexation capacity. The physico-chemical characteristics of the composite membranes were determined by FT-IR, Raman, XPS and SEM analysis while their efficiency in retaining metal ions was evaluated via ICP-MS analysis. The obtained results showed that the thermal stability of reduced graphene oxide was improved after functionalization with crown ether and that the presence of the carbonaceous filler influenced the membranes morphology in terms of pore dimensions and membrane thickness. Moreover, the ability of Cu2+ ions retention from synthetic feed solution was up to three times higher in the case of the composite membranes compared to the neat ones.

Crown Ether-Immobilized Cellulose Acetate Membranes for the Retention of Gd (III)

This study presents a new, revolutionary, and easy method of separating Gd (III). For this purpose, a cellulose acetate membrane surface was modified in three steps, as follows: firstly, with aminopropyl triethoxysylene; then with glutaraldehyde; and at the end, by immobilization of crown ethers. The obtained membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), through which the synthesis of membranes with Gd (III) separation properties is demonstrated. In addition, for the Gd (III) separating process, a gadolinium nitrate solution, with applications of moderator poison in nuclear reactors, was used. The membranes retention performance has been demonstrated by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), showing a separation efficiency of up to 91%, compared with the initial feed solution.

Magnetic porous biochar as a renewable and highly effective adsorbent for the removal of tetracycline hydrochloride in water

In this study, discarded cigarette butts were used as a precursor for preparing magnetic porous biochar with a facile annealing method. The magnetic porous biochar was applied to remove tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) from aqueous solution. It exhibited excellent adsorption capacity for TCH, which was much higher than various similar materials reported. At the same time, the adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms of TCH were well fitted to the pseudo-second-order models and Freundlich models, respectively. The thermodynamics experiments proved that the adsorption on magnetic porous biochar was an endothermic reaction. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanism was explored, and the outstanding adsorption ability was mainly dependent on the pore filling effect, electrostatic interaction, and π-π interaction. By using the magnetic porous biochar, the real water samples were treated and high removal efficiency to TCH was obtained. What's more, the excellent reusability endowed the magnetic porous biochar with great potential as adsorbents for practical application.

Recent Advances in Biopolymeric Membranes towards the Removal of Emerging Organic Pollutants from Water

Herein, this paper details a comprehensive review on the biopolymeric membrane applications in micropollutants' removal from wastewater. As such, the implications of utilising non-biodegradable membrane materials are outlined. In comparison, considerations on the concept of utilising nanostructured biodegradable polymeric membranes are also outlined. Such biodegradable polymers under considerations include biopolymers-derived cellulose and carrageenan. The advantages of these biopolymer materials include renewability, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and cost-effectiveness when compared to non-biodegradable polymers. The modifications of the biopolymeric membranes were also deliberated in detail. This included the utilisation of cellulose as matrix support for nanomaterials. Furthermore, attention towards the recent advances on using nanofillers towards the stabilisation and enhancement of biopolymeric membrane performances towards organic contaminants removal. It was noted that most of the biopolymeric membrane applications focused on organic dyes (methyl blue, Congo red, azo dyes), crude oil, hexane, and pharmaceutical chemicals such as tetracycline. However, more studies should be dedicated towards emerging pollutants such as micropollutants. The biopolymeric membrane performances such as rejection capabilities, fouling resistance, and water permeability properties were also outlined.

Nanocellulose Based Filtration Membrane in Industrial Waste Water Treatment: A Review

In the field of industrial wastewater treatment, membrane separation technology, as an emerging separation technology, compared with traditional separation technology such as precipitation, adsorption, and ion exchange, has advantages in separation efficiency, low energy consumption, low cost, simple operation, and no secondary pollution. The application has been expanding in recent years, but membrane fouling and other problems have seriously restricted the development of membrane technology. Natural cellulose is one of the most abundant resources in nature. In addition, nanocellulose has characteristics of high strength and specific surface area, surface activity groups, as well as being pollution-free and renewable, giving it a very wide development prospect in many fields, including membrane separation technology. This paper reviews the current status of nanocellulose filtration membrane, combs the widespread types of nanocellulose and its derivatives, and summarizes the current application of cellulose in membrane separation. In addition, for the purpose of nanocellulose filtration membrane in wastewater treatment, nanocellulose membranes are divided into two categories according to the role in filtration membrane: the application of nanocellulose as membrane matrix material and as a modified additive in composite membrane in wastewater treatment. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of inorganic ceramic filtrations and nanocellulose filtrations are compared, and the application trend of nanocellulose in the filtration membrane direction is summarized and discussed.

Multiple adsorption systems and electron-scale insights into the high efficiency coadsorption of a novel assembled cellulose via experiments and DFT calculations

In view of the characteristics of heavy metal and antibiotic compound pollution in the Pearl River Basin in Guangzhou. More scientifically modified cellulose, named HVUC, is characterized by multiple hydrophilic groups, long chains and large space and displays highly efficient adsorption of both Cd and sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) and good adaptability in a wide pH range and at high ion strength. Furthermore, the coadsorption mechanism was elaborated from multiple angles. Multiple adsorption experiments explained the competition and synergy effect in the adsorption process. The electrostatic potential maps indicated that HVUC had advantageous adsorption sites for both Cd and SMZ and that electrostatic interactions had the greatest impact on the adsorption of Cd and SMZ. The electron density and differential charge density images proved that Cd more easily overlapped electron clouds and transferred electrons with HVUC and that SMZ^- and could act as a bridge for SMZ^-. The equilibrium configuration indicated that the formation of Cd-SMZ^- complexes led to the bending and folding of SMZ^-, which was not conducive to overall adsorption when SMZ^- was close to HVUC and could lead to the release of SMZ^- when Cd was close to HVUC, which confirmed the proposed mechanism of complexation-decomplexation-complexation.

Sensitive Materials and Coating Technologies for Surface Acoustic Wave Sensors

Since their development, surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices have attracted much research attention due to their unique functional characteristics, which make them appropriate for the detection of chemical species. The scientific community has directed its efforts toward the development and integration of new materials as sensing elements in SAW sensor technology with a large area of applications, such as for example the detection of volatile organic compounds, warfare chemicals, or food spoilage, just to name a few. Thin films play an important role and are essential as recognition elements in sensor structures due to their wide range of capabilities. In addition, other requisites are the development and application of new thin film deposition techniques as well as the possibility to tune the size and properties of the materials. This review article surveys the latest progress in engineered complex materials, i.e., polymers or functionalized carbonaceous materials, for applications as recognizing elements in miniaturized SAW sensors. It starts with an overview of chemoselective polymers and the synthesis of functionalized carbon nanotubes and graphene, which is followed by surveys of various coating technologies and routes for SAW sensors. Different coating techniques for SAW sensors are highlighted, which provides new approaches and perspective to meet the challenges of sensitive and selective gas sensing.

Direct preparation of porous cellulose microspheres via a self-growth process on bamboo fibers and their functionalization for specific adsorption of histidine-rich proteins

The traditional preparation of cellulose microspheres always involves tedious synthetic procedures (e.g., dissolution, emulsification and regeneration) and inevitable organic solvents, which undergoes both high production cost and environmental contamination. To overcome these issues, a feasible and green synthesis strategy is proposed to construct porous cellulose microspheres (PCMs) via one-step spontaneous formation relying on sodium periodate oxidation of pure bamboo fibers. By this strategy, a cluster of robust cellulose microspheres grow up on the surface of bamboo fibers in aqueous phase through amorphous oxidized cellulose self-assembly accumulation and then drop out when their sizes increase to about 15 µm. After being immobilized with Cu(II), the prepared cellulose microspheres serve as metal affinity adsorbent for proteins adsorption, showing high adsorption capacity, good selectivity and excellent reusability for bovine hemoglobin (BHb). Together with green and easy synthesis, the novel cellulose microspheres show a promising alternative to commercially available adsorbent support.

Cellulose Composites with Graphene for Tissue Engineering Applications

Tissue engineering is an interdisciplinary field that combines principles of engineering and life sciences to obtain biomaterials capable of maintaining, improving, or substituting the function of various tissues or even an entire organ. In virtue of its high availability, biocompatibility and versatility, cellulose was considered a promising platform for such applications. The combination of cellulose with graphene or graphene derivatives leads to the obtainment of superior composites in terms of cellular attachment, growth and proliferation, integration into host tissue, and stem cell differentiation toward specific lineages. The current review provides an up-to-date summary of the status of the field of cellulose composites with graphene for tissue engineering applications. The preparation methods and the biological performance of cellulose paper, bacterial cellulose, and cellulose derivatives-based composites with graphene, graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide were mainly discussed. The importance of the cellulose-based matrix and the contribution of graphene and graphene derivatives fillers as well as several key applications of these hybrid materials, particularly for the development of multifunctional scaffolds for cell culture, bone and neural tissue regeneration were also highlighted.
